i personally have a high protein Mediterranean diet while focusing on whole foods. I avoid anything artificial etc. Works pretty well for me, been at it for 1.5 year and feel better than ever. But as I said, it's subjective. The best diet is the one you can follow

when I was 14-16 I went from 260 to 170 with shit loads of exercise (got obsessed you could say) was eating way too much so never dropped below 170, I think I was probably eating 4000 calories a day near the end, went to the gym 3 hours a day near the end too, it started small though like 30 mins of exercise, didn't change diet so I inflated back up when the exercise stopped

if you have established your maintenance calories just make sure to be within +-500 calories. If you are trying to gain weight: smoothies are your friend (it's hard to force 3500+ calories of solid clean foods). If you are trying to lose weight, high volume foods like popcorn or plain salads can be life savers (make you full and satiated but without adding too many calories).
