If you're on ubuntu, there's a very high likelihood that ssh/sftp is already enabled, as Proxi said
If you can access the server via SSH (with PuTTy or Terminus, for instance), try connecting to it with a SFTP client (FireZilla, WinSCP, Cyberduck, etc), with pretty much the same credentials
