I have a pretty stupid question and please eli5. Say my server is using 10GB of ram, and is capped at 10GB. Then, something happens and it asks for more ram, it crashes. Why does it crash instead of just clearing some of the unused parts of the memory?

Clarifying edit: I get my server from a host, and Xmx=10GB. How come my server sometimes asks for more RAM than the Xmx, thus crashing it. Can't it just like remove some of the things in the ram?

Java is a 'virtual computer' that runs on your computer. It requires ram to run. The Xmx value sets how much ram the program needs. But the JVM needs extra ram to run itself. When your virtual computer gets to 10gb and asks for the rest of the 10gb it's supposed to have (taken up by the computer itself not the program it's running) it will crash because the memory it was told was there isn't available

I'm sure there is a better way to explain but that's the jist
