Hi Ive run into an issue where itemsync has stopped working, I was doing a rando with friends and we noticed our items weren't syncing. We also tried to make a new save and we could not connect to eachother with itemsync, we've tried reinstalling the mod/reopening the game but it didn't change anything. i mean u kinda just cheating at this point imo but if u really want to revive ur steel soul file, there is a way with save edit. edit the permadeathMode flag in ur defeated steel soul file from 2 to 1. then put that edited save file back into where ur save files are and thats it, u can open the game to see ur steel soul file revived. u will need to retrieve ur rosaries since it still spawns a cocoon.

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

  • Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
    • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
    • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
      • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
      • If using a Playstation/Nintendo controller, see this information.
  • Game crashes or has visual glitches when starting / while playing!
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
  • Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
    • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

silksong debug mod can give u the rosaries u need to afford any benches and it also offers invisiblity + disabling HUD. u can also toggle act 3 if u need the act 3 versions of rooms. it also has invincibility and no clip in case u need it (along with many other features but the ones i mentioned are all u really need based on what u described). the quick warp mod can also be used in tandem with debug mod to warp to any room u want, as long as u know the room id of the room u want to warp to.

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

  • "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
    • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
  • Your game patch doesn't match your installer
    • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
    • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
  • Something didn't install correctly
    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
    • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
  • You're on Linux/Steamdeck
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.

Which game and what makes you think it should be vanilla? If it's HK you should be able to verify the game's integrity with Steam (or your platform's equivalent), unless you modded it with bepinex in which case you'll have to follow its uninstallation's instructions. If it's Silksong then you most likely modded it with bepinex, so you'll also have to uninstall bepinex

Debug Binds

"Every time I [do X] something weird happens!"

  • 99% of the time, this is because you accidentally set a keybind in debug (or are pressing a button that is one of the default Binds). Note that depending what changes you were accidentally making, simply uninstalling Debug won't fix it.

How to fix

  • Pause the game, then press F1 on your keyboard to open the Debug interface.
    • If it doesn't work at first, try pressing Fn + F1. If that still doesn't work, then go to Options > Mods > DebugMod and then you can set a new button to open it
  • The Binds panel will list a few options on each page. If you don't see the problem on the current page, then press the ▶️ at the bottom of the panel to see the next page.
  • When you find the Bind that you want to remove, press the White Circle ⚪ to the right of it, then press Esc on your keyboard to remove the bind.
    • Note: on some resolutions, the binding buttons don't line up correctly with the text, so be sure to check that you're setting the correct one.
  • If you accidentally adjusted your Nail Damage, then you can reset it on the first page of the Binds panel. Find the Reset Nail bind, and simply press the ▶️ to have the action happen once.
    • if you set some other permanent effect, then you'll need to find the appropriate page for it in the Binds panel, and find the action that's the opposite of what you did. Some actions (like having extra Keys) cannot be undone.

Mods installed from external sources from the installers (ie Nexus or similar) will not be compatible with mods that are on the installers. If you install Bepinex in your Hollow Knight install and use Lumafly/Scarab, then you will have issues, and your game may not function correctly.

You can use Steam's Verify Integrity options to remove Lumafly/Scarab mods, but you will need to follow Bepinex's instructions for uninstalling that instead.

What do save files looks like?

Important paths

Notes: These assume you're using Steam, with default locations. For GoG, locate your hollow_knight.exe folder, and then follow from there. The Save Files location is the same for all versions (except for XBox Games) and additionally contains Global Settings as well as your ModLog.txt. Some mod installers such as Lumafly can open these folders for you.

Modding "Xbox Games" versions (Gamepass / Microsoft's App Store):

Note: this is for Desktop/Laptop. You cannot mod the game on Xbox consoles

  • Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
    • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
  • After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files).
    If you have further issues, then please see #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post if needed.

Important paths

  • Save Files: %AppData%\..\Local\Packages\
    • Find a folder in here with Team Cherry in the name.
  • Game Files: C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content\
  • Mod Files: C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content\hollow_knight_Data\Managed\Mods\
  • Note: Microsoft manages this install weirdly and syncs its files to inaccessible folders, so changes may need a few minutes to take effect and bugs with installing or uninstalling mods can occur.

Your post should include Useful Information, such as:
