This is the mod for reskinning things in the game

Resources

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

Ping isn't needed thanks. Just look in the skin folder, and delete it or swap it. You can open the sheet to see what's on it other than lifeblood (all of the other hud elements are also included).

"Every time I [do X] something weird happens!"

  • 99% of the time, this is because you accidentally set a keybind in debug (or are pressing a button that is one of the default Binds). Note that depending what changes you were accidentally making, simply uninstalling Debug won't fix it.

How to fix

  • Pause the game, then press F1 on your keyboard to open the Debug interface.
    • If it doesn't work at first, try pressing Fn + F1. If that still doesn't work, then go to Options > Mods > DebugMod and then you can set a new button to open it
  • The Binds panel will list a few options on each page. If you don't see the problem on the current page, then press the ▶️ at the bottom of the panel to see the next page.
  • When you find the Bind that you want to remove, press the White Circle ⚪ to the right of it, then press Esc on your keyboard to remove the bind.
    • Note: on some resolutions, the binding buttons don't line up correctly with the text, so be sure to check that you're setting the correct one.
  • If you accidentally adjusted your Nail Damage, then you can reset it on the first page of the Binds panel. Find the Reset Nail bind, and simply press the ▶️ to have the action happen once.

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Pale Court items won't be randomized (unless using pale court charms instead of pale court) it should mainly be Ok although some fights you may not be able to enter if you've turned on additional maps for rando

Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
  • AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Apple could not verify that Installer is free of malware

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)

If you want to make custom skins I would recommend you join the modding server and look at the ressources in the art channel
They mostly cover hk ressources but skin making in silksong is about the same (if inconvenient due to lack of tool rn)

I really like the Grimm skin. It doesn't surprise me at all that its popular considering how popular Grimm himself is. It also doesn't surprise me at all how often people say it doesn't work since its one of the skins thats two folders deep.

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements. However, since a recent Steam update, some players report not obtaining them.
    • If you are missing achievements, opening the game in vanilla and setting at a bench may sync them again. You can also get them using the HollowKnightAchievementManager mod.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, such as skipping something with QoL, then you won't get that achievement. Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.
  • In some cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.

Just had a few ideas to enable a FPS-pvp-like experience.

Throwing them out here in case anyone wants to run with them:

  • Tools auto-equip on pickup. Red tools prioritize the first open slot proceeding from F, Up+F, then Down+F for MKB (or the corresponding controller buttons).
  • Tools are auto-unequipped upon respawn.
  • Tools drop from certain enemies or have dedicated spawn points. If using spawn points, have them respawn upon PK of whoever had them. E.g. if a player has Long Claw, it respawns when that player dies.
  • Replace "Take" hover text with tool names. (Or leave as-is for a wackier experience of blind pick-ups.)
  • Can also do the same for Crests as pick-ups, auto-changing Crests, carrying over tools that use the same slots, and either dropping or respawning any tools that can't be carried over due to capacity.
  • Can also incorporate Memory Lockets as some kind of drop/spawn.
  • Remove all bench healing, of course.
  • Add barriers blocking off certain zones so that you have "maps/arenas" and you don't have someone wandering off across all of Pharloom.

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

  • "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
    • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
  • Your game patch doesn't match your installer
    • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
    • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
  • Something didn't install correctly
    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
    • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
  • You're on Linux/Steamdeck
    • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.
  • Your game is cracked/pirated hollowpirate
    • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods aren't considered compatible with pirated copies, which will not get support in the main servers.

Resources

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn+Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin doesn’t show up in the menu, ensure that you extracted it from the zip/rar/etc it came in (tutorial: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1207486627124093019/1403869873192571024/i.png).
  • If your skin doesn’t work, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this you may need to click Reload in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s first launch. To use both mods at once: disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to apply skins in a small room like a stag station.
  • Ensure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when your save file is loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu only affect new files.

There is not

#

It was made into a Connection Mod (so part of Rando iteself, more or less), instead of being just an "outside" mod to Rando, so that it could be used in Tournaments without needing to get rid of settings that may be considered cheating.

The downside to this, is that it can no longer be added after starting a save
