Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
• You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
  • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
• For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

How it works

Idk why, but after I pick up soul catcher, it takes me 10 hits to kill a crawlid. I tried to disable absolutely all mods, and even to play a different save file (where it took normal 2 hits, not 10), but it still took me too many hits to kill 2-hit enemies on the first save file.

A few of the sheets are not named correctly tho, you have to rename them after packing to match what the Default uses or they won't work in game.

A Custom Knight skin is just a folder full of files that you want to replace. If you want to use a Skin File that isn't part of a skin, then you either need to create a folder for it, or you need to add it to an existing skin.

You just need to make sure that the name of the image matches the name of the same original image from the Default skin folder

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

That skin is private, you can't get it. This one #modding-discussion message is public though. Commissioning an artist is also an option but that'll cost several hundred $. You can find artists who accept commissions in the modding server

In my honest opinion you don’t want to use any mod on a first playthrough
Mods are either for "quality of life" which is cheating and does also go against the spirit of the game for the most part, and is quality of life for people who want to speedrun for example. You don’t want mods that skip cutscenes.
Or add extra content, which you don’t care about since you have yet to beat the game
Or are visual, which again, you don’t care about since you are not getting bored of hk visuals before even playing the game

This isn’t Skyrim in which you need 70 mods to have a working inventory
