Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

• If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
  • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

• The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
• The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
• The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
• The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
  • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Here are all the mods that are currently running

A few things that can be seen from your modlist:

• You shouldn't use Fast Travel, since that mod is really buggy
• You shouldn't use WeaverCore and HKTool together (so that includes mods that take dependencies on them) because that tends to break things too
• I don't know how intentional that is but hkmpPouch is failing due to the fact that you don't have HKMP, which is its dependency.
  That being said I doubt that any of this is tied to your current issue, so check the common issues and the troubleshooting section of the bot's message below:

Also most legitimate artists aren't going to want to work on someone else's skin without permission, and it's not easy to contact the chinese artists. So a complete grub skin could likely mean starting from scratch.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
• You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
• You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

• A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

• On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
  • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
• For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

Starting Pale Court

• Install it using Lumafly
• You must have ||All dreamers||
• You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
• You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

• MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
• AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
• Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
  • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
  • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
• HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
  • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
• Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
• Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
• Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing mods ⚠️

This error can happen for several reasons. Read through all of the common ones below to see which might apply to you.

• "Hollow Knight isn't responding"
  • This isn't actually a crash, you just need to wait and let the game load. This is common with mods that have a lot of Pre-loading (like Pale Court, Enemy Randomizer, WeaverCore, and mods that load a lot of skins/audio).
• Your game patch doesn't match your installer
  • Modding is now done on patch 1.5.78+, required by all current installers. If you're on Steam, make sure your Beta is set to "None"
  • "Mod Installer" (Zote) and Mod Installer 2 work with version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. Tutorials saying to use these are outdated.
  • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. For speedrunning mod help, type ?tag 1221 into chat for more info.
• Something didn't install correctly
  • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
  • Ensure that the installer isn’t in a .zip file (if you got it as a .zip, you'll need to Extract it)
  • Make sure that the Installer is out of your Downloads folder
• You're on Linux/Steamdeck
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch options.
• Your game is cracked/pirated
  • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods aren't considered compatible with pirated copies, which will not get support in the main servers.
  • Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam/GoG/Xbox Games.
  • If you do not have a supported version, please get one and you will get support with modding. Requesting help with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.

You've kind of dismissed all the main big mods and have a pretty narrow definition of what you are interested in. Other modded content almost always makes the game harder. I'd suggest Glimmering Realn but that requires a new save so there honestly might not be anything like what you want

That depends on the mod. Mods that have ItemChanger as a dependency require new saves, such as Lost Artifacts, but Pale Court doesn't for example

Starting Pale Court

• Install it using Lumafly
• You must have ||All dreamers||
• You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
• You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

• MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
• AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
• Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
  • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
  • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
• HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
  • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
• Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
• Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
• Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

modlinks are where the installers get every info they need about the mods they can install (you can see what the actual file looks like at https://github.com/hk-modding/modlinks/blob/main/ModLinks.xml). If for whatever reason you want your installer to be able to install other mods and if you have a file with the same structure you can use it instead through the custom modlinks option. Imo it's also useful when you want to add a mod to the installers to check that your changes work before making a pull request to the official modlinks

  • Make sure that the Lumafly's exe isn't in Downloads. Ideally put it on your Desktop.

How it works

Common issues

I believe it saves that info to either the user#.modded.json or as part of the savefile itself ( user#.dat ), although I'm not sure the values offhand. If they aren't there without visiting them, it shouldn't take too long to visit them all with Benchwarp + Debug

What do save files looks like?

• Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
• You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot

• Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups

Modded Saves

That is usually caused by incompatibilities between mods - Pale Court usually has a lot of conflict with other charm-editing mods

So if you have them active at once I think it starts causing weird behaviour such as that one

Fixing Common issues on Linux/SteamDeck

• Controller Doesn't Work / [Some Mod] isn't working!
  • By default (especially on SteamDeck) Steam may be using Proton and installed the Windows version of the game. This can have problems on it's own, but also causes issues because the Mod Installers will install the Linux version of the ModdingAPI, which isn't fully compatible with the Windows version.
  • How to Fix: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)
    • After this you'll need to select "Change Paths" in your Mod Installer and change it to the new install path (which you can get by using the "Browse Local Files" option in Steam, then reinstall your mods.
• Game crashes when when starting / while playing!
  • Add -force-opengl to the steam launch arguments. Note: This can be a problem even if playing Vanilla, but it is commonly seen when Modding because of the greater resources used.
• Mods not saving correctly / loading correctly
  • This can happen if the Permissions in your Hollow Knight install get messed up. You can fix this by making sure that the current user (or all users) have permissions for the Hollow Knight install directory and subdirectory & files. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, then you can open terminal, use CD "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/" to get to the Steam Apps directory, and then use sudo chmod -R 777 "Hollow Knight" to update the permissions for the install so that all users can access it.

Starting Pale Court

• Install it using Lumafly
• You must have ||All dreamers||
• You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
• You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

• HKTool and WeaverCore are not compatible with Pale Court (or each other)
• AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
• Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
  • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
  • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
• HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
  • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
• Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
• Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
• Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

There's a website linked in the #randomizer Pins that has tips for getting set up with that. Basic QoL is a rando dependency, if there's something else in particular you're looking for you can use Lumafly's search function to see if it exsists, most mods have good descriptions.

If you're looking for people to play with there's the HKMP server for that kind of multiplayer, and the Speedrun/racing server for like Itemsyc stuff

For manhunt you'll want to check for the HKMP server, since it's impossible to play alone. For randomizers you can check the pinned post, but the only requirement is to install Randomizer 4 and its dependencies (Lumafly does it automatically)

Probably. Pale Court doesn't play well with most other mods.

Pale Court is compatible with rando but not integrated (none of the items will be randomzied). I'm not sure if fyrenest is compatible, never used it

Common issues

• If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
• Upgraded Dream Shield breaks Custom Knight’s default skin generation, a necessary step which only happens once on Custom Knight’s first launch after its 3.0 update. To use both mods at the same time, disable Upgraded Dream Shield, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable Upgraded Dream Shield again.
• If The Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
• Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.
• If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.

It's certainly not easy but not hard either if you're an artist. But there are several hundred sprites to edit for even a basic skin
