From what I see on the source code, it just sets dark mode and allows to send notifications. There is also a "Do Fun Stuff" option but I don't really know if it does anything

IIRC it's a proof-of-concept mod that maniuplates some stuff about the game in a way that is.. unconventional. But it's purely technical, and doesn't actually do anything.

Common issues

If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
If The Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.
If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Verify that you are using the correct installer and patch!

For normal modding you should use a current patch installer (such as Lumafly or Scarab) and you must have Steam Betas set to "None"
- Pirated copies / Unofficial ports are not supported
Modding on 1.4.3.2 using "Mod Installer" / "Mod Installer 2" is no longer supported.
1.2.2.1 Modding does not have an installer.

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
- This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
- If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Verify that you are using the correct installer and patch!

For normal modding you should use a current patch installer (such as Lumafly or Scarab) and you must have Steam Betas set to "None"
- Pirated copies / Unofficial ports are not supported
Modding on 1.4.3.2 using "Mod Installer" / "Mod Installer 2" is no longer supported.
1.2.2.1 Modding does not have an installer.
- You can type ?tag 1221 for info on it.

How to manually install mods on 1.5.78

Modding and Achievements

Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements.
- If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
- If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, then you won't get that achievement.
In many cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.
In some rare cases, players report not getting achievements when modding. While this is not normal, it should be mentioned that it can happen.
- This is often tied to them doing something like skipping something with QoL (such as credits), and thus skipping the actual trigger for the Achievement.
- Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.

Common issues

Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.

Depends on what you mean with that, you can't remove its other features but you can just not use them, they all require the press of a button to be used. That being said, be careful not to accidentally bind a setting to a key you often use, as that can lead to unexpected results

Editing save files

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

MoreSaves Mod | Install
With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the in-game Menu. Either from the Main Menu or Pause Menu, go to Options > Mods > MoreSaves to edit save files in game.
QoL mod | Install
- If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra file called user#.json (where # is the file number), which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
DebugMod | Install
- While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.

- Find the Save File, upload it to the website, and make the edits. It will Download as save file for Slot 1, so rename it if needed. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information

Common issues

If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
If The Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.
If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.

Starting Pale Court

Install it using Lumafly
You must have ||All dreamers||
You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
- If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
- Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
- (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
- %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
- You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

QoL: Opening a save with QOL installed will create an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor
DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. This page explains how you can use other mods and addons to synchronize some aspects, and improve your experience.

Important paths

Notes: These are for Steam's default locations. For GoG, locate your hollow_knight.exe folder and follow from there. The Saves folder also contains Global Settings and your ModLog.txt. Some mod installers such as Lumafly can open these folders for you.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. This page explains how you can use other mods and addons to synchronize some aspects, and improve your experience.

Editing save files

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

MoreSaves Mod | Install
With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the in-game Menu. Either from the Main Menu or Pause Menu, go to Options > Mods > MoreSaves to edit save files in game.
QoL mod | Install
- If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra file called user#.json (where # is the file number), which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
DebugMod | Install
- While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.
Website
- Find the Save File, upload it to the website, and make the edits. It will Download as save file for Slot 1, so rename it if needed. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information

A. I assume you meant HK instead of KH
B. Is there any reason you're trying to create your own API? If you do this, it won't be compatible with all of the existing mods.
C. The existing API is on GitHub for reference, as well as all of the current installers (linked in the pins)
D. If you are serious about developing for HK, then you should join the Dev Channels of the Modding Discord, which is also linked in the pins.

For absrad specifically there's Infinite Absrad Phases, otherwise there's Boss Attacks, which is not really about phases but you can probably configure a boss to attack similarly to a specific phase

Common issues

If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
If The Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.
If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
- %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
- You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

I need a specific type of save file

Various save files can be found in the "Saves" section of this page: https://www.speedrun.com/hollowknight/resources
- If the file you download is a .rar or other archived format, then you will need to extract it with something like 7zip

Editing save files

Starting Pale Court

Install it using Lumafly
You must have ||All dreamers||
You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
- If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
- Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
- (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

If your game is cracked / pirated

Piracy is not supported in most communities for games (including this one), and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods are not considered compatible with pirated copies, and you will not get troubleshooting support in any of the main community servers for them.
Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam, GoG, or Xbox Games. (Console versions, and unofficial versions are not supported)
If you do not have a supported version, then please get one and then you will get support with modding the game. Asking for assistance with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.

Common issues

If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
If The Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. If you apply a skin from the Main Menu, it will only be used for new files.
If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.

Common issues

500 ish for the knight sheet. If you want a 'complete' skin, like the hud, cutscenes, etc. you're looking at closer to 800 :D

At some point, I really want to learn how to use CKSAA, because I think it would be fun to use it to make some "simplified skins", where each animation is only like, 2-3 frames ( like this ababa )

I think I might use cksaa when I finally get around to doing my own little root skin, for certain animations, just because right now squishing her branches into some frames is pain. Alternatively, I'll change her head angle, a thought process for another day, after I finish Chibiterasu.

nah, I usually do a 'proof of concept' sprite when I have a skin concept, and then I'll leave it until I decide to actually dedicate my time to the skin. I didn't go further because at the time I was working on little radiance

I don't think I'd be able to get the consistent timing for the whole thing without CKSAA (since the normal animations use varying fps, and different animations have different numbers of frames in general)
I think it would be kinda cool to make one skin, and then that could serve as a template for those that wanted to also make simple-style skins like that.

Two more questions, if you don't mind. Do you use the knight as a template, and how did you capture the shading used for say, the branches of the mini White Lady? Did you analyse the vanilla White Lady sprite and recreate a similar look, or?

I use the knight as a guide, and draw on top of it. For little root, I just plopped a white blob on the face with an air brush and used edge lighting on the cloak. I don't recommend shading though for your first skin. Shading is just another thing you need to keep consistent between sprites, and its usually not really necessary.
