You don't need a code (usually codes are used to make sure settings are exactly the same for something like a race or an itemsync), just use the default settings if you're getting started unless there's something specific you want to add or remove.

  • modding to be sorted by the game itself
    • which would probably mean that it is done in lua, and is more limited
  • Even then, unless they had a very robust API, mods would probably need special treatment to work on consoles, since the game backend is different

Yeah you can absolutely move save files around

Just go in the save folder, whatever it may be for that cracked version which your brother installed, on an old pc that isn’t yours or whatever your crazy story is and put it on the normal path that a legitimate steam copy does

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, then you won't get that achievement.
  • In many cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.
  • In some rare cases, players report not getting achievements when modding. While this is not normal, it should be mentioned that it can happen.
    • This is often tied to them doing something like skipping something with QoL (such as credits), and thus skipping the actual trigger for the Achievement.
    • Some mods that rely on SFCore such as Hallownest Vocalized can sometimes prevent achievements from working.

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Interesting, I have you blocked- probably if you randomly pinged me before the same way grubthink
Randomly pinging people you see online is incredibly rude, and generally is going to cause people to not want to help you. It can also be viewed as spam, which usually gets you a warning, although I'm pretty sure you've had enough warnings that it probably results in muting or banning (I'm not really sure since I don't generally do that kinda thing here).

Advice: Ask for help, and be patient. Most ideally, look at pins and see #1090079233520451714 , then make a #1057825333841240104 post with the recommended information, that way people who are able to help you, actually can.

Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing a mod ⚠️

This error can happen for a number of reasons. Read through all of the common reasons below to see which might apply to you.

  • Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used

    • Modding is currently done on patch 1.5.78+, and this is what all current installers require. If you're on Steam, then make sure you are not accidentally using a Beta patch (Beta should be set to "None")
    • "Mod Installer" ( Zote) and Mod Installer 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. If you watched or read something that said to use these, then it is outdated information.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. If you are looking for speedrunning mod help, then type ?tag 1221 into chat for more information.

  • Something didn't install correctly

    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file (if you downloaded it as a .zip, then you'll need to Extract the files from it)
    • Make sure that you moved the Installer file(s) out of your Downloads folder

If it's the setting I'm thinking about, it's the minimum difference between the amount of charms needed to unlock an important item at salubra's shop and the amount of charms that can be accessed according to the logic when you keed to buy it. So for example with a tolerance of 1, if a major item requires 5 charms then you'll be able to get at least 6 when purchasing that item becomes mandatory for progression. I highly recommend checking Randomizer 4's readme for more info

With it installed you will see tons of different settings you can choose, for a first rando you should probably not turn many skips on and only randomise the items you know the location off (ie not geo rock, more tablets or soul totems)

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

The HK Wiki is the place that has the rule about having documented explicit permission before anything is put into it (which is why Godfriend has been reaching out about skins).

This site has no functional difference than discord or terms of the site itself having rules about it. Like, if the author is okay with it being publicly available outside of where they posted it, then it should be fine.

If you have explicitly asked the author about discord uploads, then it would be probably ideal to explicitly ask about the new site; but I assume that isn't the case?

Regarding the site:
It is hosted by one of the long-time HK community devs (SFG), and the person that uploads the file has the ability to remove it, as well as SFG having the ability to remove files, so if there does ever end up being a case of someone preferring a Discord-only upload, then the copy can easily be removed.

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing a mod ⚠️

This error can happen for a number of reasons. Read through all of the common reasons below to see which might apply to you.

  • Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used

    • Modding is currently done on patch 1.5.78+, and this is what all current installers require. If you're on Steam, then make sure you are not accidentally using a Beta patch (Beta should be set to "None")
    • "Mod Installer" ( Zote) and Mod Installer 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. If you watched or read something that said to use these, then it is outdated information.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. If you are looking for speedrunning mod help, then type ?tag 1221 into chat for more information.

  • Something didn't install correctly

    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file (if you downloaded it as a .zip, then you'll need to Extract the files from it)
    • Make sure that you moved the Installer file(s) out of your Downloads folder

  • Your game is cracked / pirated hollowpirate

    • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods are not considered compatible with pirated copies, and you will not get troubleshooting support in any of the main servers for them.
    • Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam, GoG, or Xbox Games.
    • If you do not have a supported version, then please get one and then you will get support with modding. Asking for assistance with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.

Common issues

  • Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu (Options > Mods > Custom Knight), when you have your save file loaded.
  • If you have White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying the skin in a small/empty room, like a stag station.
