the bridge will be broken by the bossfight for the depths, and there will be a breakable wall to the right of the hidden station bench

Skins only work because of a tool that literally replaces the normal game files with the skin files.

There isn't a general moddingAPI for consoles, which means that no mods themselves work on them

Save Files

What do the save files looks like?
- Hollow Knight save files are in the form of user#.dat, where # is the save slot for the file.
- You can take a file named user3.dat and rename it to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot.
- You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer.
Reverting Backup files
- You have save file backups that are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. Typically speaking, you will have your last three backups.
- You can set a backup to be the real file by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup file.
Modded save files
- If you are using mods, a modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). Both this file and the user#.dat are part of the save.
Where are the files?
- On windows, the default path for Save Files is %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
- For other operating systems, type ?tag saves into chat.

Editing save files You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.
- MoreSaves mod: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Menu, by going to Options > Mods > MoreSaves.
- QoL mod: If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor.
- DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.

Just to add to this:
Specifically, you can mod any official version on PC.
Microsoft confusingly calls all of their store versions "Xbox games" (This includes the Gamepass versions, and the one from their app).

So you can mod if you're playing on a PC (laptop / desktop), but you cannot mod if you're playing on a Console (Xbox console / Switch / PS / Phone / etc)

If you mean desolate dive, shade soul is probably higher. If you mean descending dark, probably that. (Ddive does nor have an air flair while ddark does)

You should read the mod's readme (click the link in the mod's description on scarab), but to quote it:

I did that. . I think the issue is coming from that only 1 GB of the ~8GB of the game is downloading when I install. Not how to prompt Steam to fully download the game

Make sure you have the correct game version for your mods.

Modinstaller takes version 1.4.3.2 (and is no longer supported)
Scarab takes version 1.5 (set beta to "None")

I've seen some other discussion on reddit that it's an issue with something called v-sync. To try and go into launch options to where you can access the macros

If it boots in 1.4, and you're just trying to play vanilla, you can just play the 1.4 version. It's not missing any content or anything.

1432 is not supported anymore for mods. You can play really old ones on that still, but all the new stuff is on current patch

Question about Pale Court for anyone here that might have insight: I installed the mod and tried to play it, and I can tell it seems to be working (I see the new menu screen and can access the boss battles) but I can't really play it because 90% of the image assets aren't loading and just showing as giant flat pink squares or other shapes. In scarab i disabled the pale court mod and then after a while wanted to enable it again but then it made a gray thing around the on button and i cant enable any other mod

hello! i dont ever mod hollow knight so i know nothing about the various different mods. however, one of them got my attention and it was the pale court mod. i played a little bit of it and fought a boss and i can say for certain that this is extremely fun and i wish i got into modding earlier. with that being said id appreciate it alot if anyone could tell me about other mods that are like pale court that have new bosses. id really like to try them out. thanks :))

you can filter by tag with scarab+ if you want to see what bosses there are. Brand new bosses aren't common (understandably so, its a lot of work both to design a fight as well as create all the art assets for them), but there are a decent number of modified bosses to look at.

Save Files

What do the save files looks like?
- Hollow Knight save files are in the form of user#.dat, where # is the save slot for the file.
- You can take a file named user3.dat and rename it to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot.
- You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer.
Reverting Backup files
- You have save file backups that are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. Typically speaking, you will have your last three backups.
- You can set a backup to be the real file by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup file.
Modded save files
- If you are using mods, a modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). Both this file and the user#.dat are part of the save.
Where are the files?
- On windows, the default path for Save Files is %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
- For other operating systems, type ?tag saves into chat.

Starting Pale Court:

Install it using Scarab+
You must have ||All dreamers||
You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||

Known problems with Pale Court

Textures do not work on Unix systems (MacOS / Linux)
- MacOS should work on the latest update, but may still have some missing textures.
Spanish breaks one of the bosses
AdditionalMaps, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
- If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
- (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

How to use Scarab in Microsoft Store
🔹 First enter the Xbox app and move your mouse over Hollow Knight on the left bar.
🔹 Click the three points then click "Manage".
🔹 Go to the "Files" tab and select "Browse...".
🔹 Click Hollow Knight then Content, click the path bar and copy it.
🔸Run Scarab as admin and when it asks you for the path paste what copied before.

Alternate Method:
🔹 Click on your profile then "Settings"
🔹 Go to "General" tab and select "CHANGE FOLDER"
🔹 Look for a folder where you want to install the game (Preferably inside a folder in your desktop).
🔸 Copy the path bar, then run Scarab as Administrator and when it asks you for the path, paste what copied before.

Scarab path folder needs to have Hollow Knight_Data folder inside

Generally mods don't affect cheevos

#

Some people report not getting them, but that's not the norm

#

Additionally, you may not get the Cheevo pop-ups, but still get the Cheevos themselves

🔹 How it works:

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world. Enemies have separate health and can be in different places; items/abilities must be collected separately; breakable objects must be broken separately.
A player's attack will happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world.

🔹 Public Servers:

For general use (PVP enabled)
 IP:    hkmp.org
 PORT:  26950
Requires HkmpPouch

For exclusively co-op (PVP disabled)
 IP:    hkmp.org
 PORT:  26951
Requires HkmpPouch

For playing Tag

Important note: "Invalid Addons" means that you have extra HKMP addons that can't be used on the server. Pouch servers can have any Addons that say that they require Pouch, but you otherwise cannot use others!

yeah, think so. If the sprites are actually different, it's too small a difference for my eye to see. No matter what though, the running animation will flicker until 156 is changed.

Having multiple Gun Class charms equipped can also break the gun.

🔹 I disabled it and now healing doesn't work right
Hollow Point edits how Soul works on a file.

Mods/Controller not working correctly on Steam Deck
Issue: Steam Deck installs the Windows version of HK, then runs it in proton. This would be fine except that you install Linux Scarab, which replaces the Assembly-Csharp with the Linux version, and then it doesn't like to work correctly on "Windows" anymore

Solution: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)

This will reinstall the Linux version of the game, and move some files around, so you'll need to select "Change Paths" in Scarab and change it to the new install path, then reinstall your mods. After this, everything should be working.

How to Create a Custom Knight Skin by HBKit
- -# This literally answers all CK Skin creation questions. Please read it and search it when you have a question.
The Knight's Sprites
- Do not rename these folders, or they won't work when re-packing
- Files are named xxx-yy-zzz.png where x is Animation number, y is Frame of that Animation, and z is the sprite number from the sheet itself. If two sprites have the same z value, then they are duplicates and only one will actually be used!
How to use CK Swapper and Dump (For re-skinning things other than The Knight)
Tools for creating a simple base Knight Skin
Skin Remixer (Quickly color the Default cloak, add Hats, or swap Slash sprites)
Custom Character Editor (Simple took to recolor Knight's Cloak and use a different Head)
Color Knight Skins (48 skins in various colors which can be used as a base for other skins. Credit Octogus if you use one of these as a base)

Sprite Packer (Win)
- Sprite Packer is used to stitch together HK sprites that are split from something like Game Object Dump.

- Reset CustomKnight Creator Memory (Use when CKC Won't Open)
  - Press the WindowsKey + R at the same to time to bring up the "Run" window, then enter %appdata%\..\..\CustomKnight Creator and press Enter.
  - Delete the savestate.json file.

To manually install mods on 1.5.78.
🔹 Download the mod (it'll be either a dll file or a folder).
🔹 Go to your /Mods folder and create a folder with the name of the mod.
Note: You can use your installer to Open the Mods Folder
🔹 Move the mod file(s) into the newly created folder.
➡️ Run the game.

I haven't played with new spritepacker since it got updated. Been meaning to give it another shake since last time I used it, it had a bit of playback lag which kept me clinging to the og.

Yeah. I wonder what's causing my playback problems. It's not like I have a low end computer. Maybe I have too many sprite folders. Lets see if I remove some and direct it to a new location.

ok, reset it so it opens again and got it working so it doesn't crash. I'm still going to try to use it even with the lag, because it'll be really nice to keep these two skins in entirely separate folder setups and not have to worry about moving them in and out of sub-folders whenever I want to pack one ...which is what I did last time I was making two skins at once...it was not ideal.

Maybe, but at the moment when you re-direct to a new path for sprites, you have to exit and re-load new spritepacker to get it to load them. If its changed to load the new path when you hit refresh, that'd make swapping between skins as simple as just changing the path. I'm gonna keep some feedback notes as I use it, and that's the first note in it.

How to fix Installer Errors
🔹 Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
🔹 Make sure that all 4 installer files have been Extracted from the .zip and that the new folder isn't in your Downloads folder. (Extract the 4 files to your desktop)
🔹 Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator".

That really depends on what you like to do, there are mods that add new abilities, new charms, new bosses, many people use custom knight to enhance the game's look, the randomizer allow for a completely different but still completable playthrough, I recommend using the search by tag function of scarab+ to sort the mods according to what you're looking for and having a look at the mods readme's to see what they change

Modern unity versions (as far as I know, thats the reason, it might be something else, but something does prevent libTAS from properly functioning with 1.5)

wher does the Scarab keep the mod data? I reinstalled Hollow Knight, verified integrity and then when I download fresh install of Scarab+ (where I only used Scarab before) it already has the mods installed that I used previously

I wanna try installing it with Pale Court on windows and copy it on the steam deck and run with Proton, since Pale court is broken on linux verison, so if it keeps some data in like %appdata% I'd probably need to copy that too

Mods/Controller not working correctly on Steam Deck
Issue: Steam Deck installs the Windows version of HK, then runs it in proton. This would be fine except that you install Linux Scarab, which replaces the Assembly-Csharp with the Linux version, and then it doesn't like to work correctly on "Windows" anymore

Solution: Go to the HK Library page, select Properties -> Compatibility, check "Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool", and select "Steam Linux Runtime" (Note: not the sniper or soldier versions)

This will reinstall the Linux version of the game, and move some files around, so you'll need to select "Change Paths" in Scarab and change it to the new install path, then reinstall your mods. After this, everything should be working.

There's Random Teleport, which I think has a setting for teleport on hit. I don't really think it will feel like a normal run when you accidentally get hit by a tiktik & teleported to Deepnest tho zote

(Also you can still fully complete the game with rando, so I'm not sure what you meant by that)

Also at 3.5k hours I have a slightly different definition of what's "fun" in the game LOL My recommendation is to use the Scarab+ search function, you can filter by Randomizer 4 as a dependency, and take your pick from what sounds fun to you - you can read the description for each by clicking on it

Note:

iirc specifically it wants a save to be in slot 4
you can force extra pages by adding then from the main menu > options > mods > more saves

Okay I checked with debug and godseeker+ actually does lower the health from 4859 to 4259

For the Pale Court mod, is all the new stuff in one general area or is it subtly spread throughout the whole game? I'm trying to decide if I should play it on an existing file or if it would be better to start a whole new file for it.
