-He has reasons to fight you which are related to the main story (in this case saving zote).
-You can just skip it, which actually leaves consequences if you do (zote dies).
-It's supposed to teach the new players the down attack mechanic, since the safest way to hit him is to wait until he attacks and attack him from above.
