That's certainly true, but Hollow Knight was already pretty ballsy with the decision to make the compass cost a notch. At any point TC could've changed that post launch if they felt it compromised their vision. The fact that it's still in is an omen about Silksong, or at least that's what I believe.

Youtube back in the day let you change banners for your channels background before it was bought by google, and for many, many years didn't ban swearing on the platform both in videos and in chat, and didn't moderate discussions and insults in youtube chat under videos.

In many ways, Youtube was unmoderated for a long, long time, and only recently has been aggressively censored, especially in what you can view without any account - to which as an aside, I shouldn't have to make an account to prove I'm an adult. You should just take my word for it. Most actual adult sites do, so the recent phenomenon of "age restrictions" on the platform helps noone.

Moderation takes many forms, and I'm not a fan of many of them.

I agree to the rules in each community I decide to stay in, but I don't obey them because moderators exist, I obey them because most of them are common sense that shouldn't have to be rules in the first place and shouldn't need enforcement mechanisms - people should just be decent.

The entire premise of the modern internet, and much of moderation, is stilted in the idea that any amount of insult, almost regardless of how comparatively mild, is still something to be punished, rather than something to have a laugh at. Back in the day people swore and verbally challenged eachother just as much, the difference was we just didn't let it upset us, and we laughed and had fun with it. Many times as friends.
