Honestly the thing that keeps me out of roguelikes is I feel exactly like the OP in that picture.

I don't care if I die or not, and many times don't for extremely long periods of times in games, but I don't do permadeath in general, and I like consistent progress - meaning I've never been able to get into the Roguelike Genre.

I'm willing to give some a shot - one of the mods here recommended a few games.

But the fact it seems to be a cornerstone of the genre means I'm never gonna be a huge fan.

i love the setting so much, basically you are at the START of a zombie apocalypse, and throughout the town there are several humans npcs/ai that will also scatter for supply (so its kinda like a soft offline battle royale near the start)
and ofc as time goes by supplies start dwindling so you either end up teaming up with some of the NPCs, hunt other NPCs or just keep going solo. as the game progresses theres more advance zombie mutations and stuff like super end of the world religious biker gangs will arrive as well as military aid etc
