I have a theory that most (if all crests) can be obtained kinda early-to-mid (and maybe the last one in the mid of the mid) of the game, even being able to do it much earlier through shortcuts in multiple playthroughs if the player knows the layout of the map. And there will be like a few crest only, like may three to five? And each one can be upgraded to permit certain more space for the type of tools that the crest permits to use (like one crest is just one for red/blue/yellow upgraded to two for each type) just to avoid bloating of unnessersay crests, I dunno, just a personal theory.

You can play steelsoul without the developers coding it in. Just delete your save file honorably. Same for bench saves and shop items

The dilemma is that once you start changing things like combat and environment - you also cause friction with the permadeath modifier

You can’t exactly add a brand new boss in the middle of the map in a permadeath mode - in a game where the assumption is you’ll likely have multiple attempts for anything worthfighting

Choosing to fight a boss earlier than usual for Geo or an upgrade, maybe doing a pogo skip to get there in the first place - that’s a risk you’re rewarded for

Permadeath cements that reward as valuable, on the basis that upgrades are more powerful the earlier you get them
