I didn't play the DS games in order, started with DS3, and friede was easily the toughest boss for me (the only one I couldn't beat in one, relatively reasonable sitting).

SKG is my favourite fight but only because it basically combines BB's best bosses :p lady maria's follow ups, ludwig's phases (beast to biped), and orphan's... flying around everywhere?

The only boss that tops friede in terms of personal time to kill is defiled watchdog

Probably not, because the Godseekers' reason for coming to Hallownest was to seek out a new God to worship (as their old Gods died and they were being driven crazy from the silence). Long story short, if SS is a prequel, it wouldn't make sense for them to have gone to Pharloom, given up, and then gone to Hallownest, and if it's a sequel, then they should already be satisfied by the God which they have found or, depending on the ending, still be stuck in their sarcophagus.

I think the problem itselft is not so much "lineal" progresion and more about forcing the player hand's and not letting them experiment with the game systems. A problem that Other M had in spades.

one thing i love a lot about metroid fusion, the game is explicitly on rails at the beginning, the premise is you're here for a job you were hired for from the government, and samus herself kinda chafes about this.

but then because of that, the moments later on where you have to go off the rails to explore weird areas and disobey commands stand out a LOT more. it feels like you're breaking the rules to explore, like you're truly going somewhere you're not supposed to go.

like the way at the beginning you only get power ups when the AI tells you 'hey there's a power up here and command wants you to get it to improve your survivability' but then, alter on, they stop giving you commands, you start getting upgrades purely from absorbing X parasites, and the AI seems almost hesitant to you getting stronger and finding ways to overcome problems without the assistance of the federation

Other M isn't a Metroidvania though. It has most of the elements required of a Metroidvania but the way it uses those elements disqualifies it.

I think the only Metroidvania games I've actually finished are Hollow Knight, Aria of Sorrow, Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight and Unworthy.

maybe a better way of putting it is that metroid as a series has, in a way that's kinda unique for a big video game franchise with a specific formula, always addressed and built on the ideas raised in previous games. like metroid 1 gave us the basic formula of explore world, get power ups, kill metroids, be a big lone-wolf hero; metroid 2 carries that to it's logical conclusion of exterminate all metroids while framing it in a much less heroic way, like the hard black backgrounds, minimalist sound design, much more linear setup, the systematic destruction of an entire species contrasted with samus's 11th hour act of mercy to spare the last metroid, and final stretch of the game having a companion who helps you leave the planet, no enemies in sight, just this haunting bittersweet background music. metroid 3 is the first game where samus isn't where she is for a job from the government, and it's the first game where the character herself is doing everything based on her own autonomy. it's directly a revisit to the 1st game, but now overrun with space pirates, and kinda with the feeling of like, everything from the first game was almost pointless, your hard work was reversed by these same motherfuckers who just won't stop no matter how hard you fight. so like, every game is a direct response to the previous ones. 4 has you back in the 'taking orders,' but actively questions it and makes it part of the atmosphere and story, so when you go off the rails it feels like going off the rails.

they have diff stories and general game structures, but they're still tied together by the emotional touchstones of loneliness, isolation, a hostile world, and classic 70s/80s science horror. i normally don't vibe with the whole 'but this isn't a real X game' type arguments, cause gamers are crusty and weird about change, but i think other m genuinely doesn't fit with the series because it doesn't engage with what's tied together all the previous metroid games

In any case, the themes you mentioned are still present in other M even if they suffer from poor implementation, and at the end of the day the game is canon whether we like it or not. Whether or not it's a "real" Metroid game is rather irrelevant since it's evident that Sakomoto/Nintendo is/are treating is as such.
