I see this differently, being hollow referring to a metaphor. Imagine a person that never cared, no matter what. They'd be described as "hollow", even if they technically have a mind.
Apply this to vessels and it makes sense. They were meant to act like machines, incapable of manipulation to the desires, for they have none. The harder you fight back against the infection, the stronger it overtakes you. A being that doesn't dream of achieving anything, can't have its dream corrupted to seed the infection in the first place.

THK visibly stabs the infection, damaging its own body in the process. Taking this as symbolization, THK is fighting its hardest to not be overcome, yet the infection only bursts out stronger. It's resistance is fueled by the desire to protect, yet at the same time it also powers the infection.

Basically, we can have a Hollow Knight, we just need them to be truly devoid of the desire to be hollow.

• In the Exhaust Organ Silk Memory, Phantom is seen inside a tank, and given how that information is presented to us the obvious implication is that Lace is the one speaking. The dialogue also fits her character.
• Literally every single one of GMS’ children is female (she specifically wanted daughters) so it would be quite strange for Phantom to be the exception.
• The HJ uses they/them pronouns but Hornet also refers to Garmond using these so I’m not sure it makes any sense to consider it evidence in light of the above.

So ultimately all of the information were provided with points towards Phantom being female, this argument is pretty meaningless. If you want to claim that Phantom identifies as non-binary or whatever that’s a fine headcanon but it is baseless and there is no merit to this discussion

this is what happens when the gender is not really relevant to lore but then it's also somewhat relevant because of the knight, it becomes an awkward mess of whether or not the gender actually relates to a character's origin or their personality. This game doesn't show gender identity very explicitly considering how they/them is mostly used on bosses that hornet never interacts with. If hornet can somehow identify they/them through just looking at a bug, that would imply a lot of weird things like mind reading, but then you say that the hunters journal has part god-view so it just because a giant mess
