Theres not really anything wrong with hks base mechanics. i think sk improves on them but hk was great how it was.

they were intentionally trying to leave ambiguous whether the black stuff on peoples faces were literal eyes or weird nondescript holes but even there they were implicitly acknowledging you couldnt make that argument for various other bugs (...like possibly every infected enemy???? ) and then they also made the vessels' and pk's eye holes distinct from everyone else's anyway
