Common CK issues/fixes

Verify that the skin was installed correctly.
Ensure that you're enabling it from the Pause Menu, not the Main Menu.
If it doesn't apply, then you may need to reset your Global Settings for it. You can either manually do this by deleting the customknight.globalsettings files from your saves directors ( type ?tag saves in chat if you don't know where that is), or by using an automatic script from ?tag reset .

DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.

After resetting it, it may work again.
That being said, Scarab doesn't know about mods that you already have. So it's normal that it doesn't see the mods that are there.

need help with custom skins, for the record every other mod i use works perfectly, and ive followed instructions on how to use the mod.
problem is the skins just dont apply, they appear in the mod settings but upon clicking the button to apply the skin absolutely nothing happens.
this happens for both custom knight and the custom health bar mod.
specifically using the grimmknight and masks for hp skins.

After installing, in order to actually use the mod
When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If there is also some larger text that says "Load Enemy Randomizer", then press that button to randomize the enemies using the default settings (Note: you will need to wait a few minutes while this loads). If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.

hi, i'm quite late, but might still be useful. i would recommend not removing the red borders. they are there to tell you the limits of where you can draw (anything beyond the red borders will be removed). they do not show up in the game itself.

on Ubuntu Linux, using HK 1.5 on steam, I have tried installing Scarab by extracting to a desktop folder. When launching it shows just a black box. I have tried reinstalling twice and restarting my computer 3 times, it does the same thing. I have followed all the steps in the pinned message regarding this. It still only shows a black screen.

I'm having a glitch on one of my save files where the amount of time to heal is almost nothing and it takes almost no soul. I think this is a result of one of the mods I've played in the past but its still here even after uninstalling/reinstalling the game.

Hollow Point doesn't work on new saves. Save and quit, then reload the save file.
Having multiple Gun Class charms equipped can also break the gun.

This is a known issue, and Custom Knight is not considered compatible with HP.

Open the desired Save File, pause and Apply the skin in the Mods Menu.
Save and Quit, then close the game.

Well what I ended up doing was editing the sprites, exporting them, then once I packed them into the sprite sheets. Even with sprite packer for some reason a couple frames still had red borders in game, so I opened the sprite sheets and removed them there. Everything works fine with it now in game. #modding-discussion message

If you're hosting using a VPN then just the host has to have the mod installed, then all players with ghost hunter should be able to see each others ghosts. If you're hosting a dedicated server, then you need to install HKMPPouch to it and then ghost hunter should work for any players using it

I don't know but while waiting for someone who knows one thing you can check is wether the game's own backups get overwritten by steam cloud saves or not, to do that you'll need to go to your save folder, move userX.dat somewhere else (X being the number of the slot of the save) and rename userX.dat.bak1 to userX.dat, and launch the game

Sorry for the ping, I just want to correct one thing that I said: you might have several files called userX.dat.bak#, # being a number probably different than 1 as opposed to what I said, it indicates when the backup was made so you'll probably want to chose the file with the highest value because it will be the most recent one

On the bright side, I checked what files steam is backing up for me and these .bak# files weren't in the list, so that might mean that they weren't overwritten when you downloaded the saves

How to use Scarab in Microsoft Store
🔹 First enter the Xbox app and move your mouse over Hollow Knight on the left bar.
🔹 Click the three points then click "Manage".
🔹 Go to the "Files" tab and select "Browse...".
🔹 Click Hollow Knight then Content, click the path bar and copy it.
🔸Run Scarab as admin and when it asks you for the path paste what copied before.

Alternate Method:
🔹 Click on your profile then "Settings"
🔹 Go to "General" tab and select "CHANGE FOLDER"
🔹 Look for a folder where you want to install the game (Preferably inside a folder in your desktop).
🔸 Copy the path bar, then run Scarab as Administrator and when it asks you for the path, paste what copied before.

Scarab path folder needs to have Hollow Knight_Data folder inside

After installing, in order to actually use the mod
When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.

Hello, I need help having steam recognize my save files. I had it working properly a couple minutes ago but was lagging very badly once I switched off focus. Worked much better after --force-opengl flag was passed (and I forced proton experimental), but it pushed my save files to user1.dat.bak# I copied and moved them back to user1, user2, ... but steam still doesn't recognize those saves.

Running steam native on Arch linux with cloud autosave on.

Two things, make sure to deinstall everything regarding to moddinstaller two if you plan on using scarab

Second off don’t install mods you don’t know what they do (for example custom knight plus if you only know what custom knight does)

One question, Is there a way to make every enemy randomized? I mean by this. The enemy randomizer I have installed right now changes the enemy to another one, example is the crawlids turn into mistakes and vengeflies in oomas, but I would like that an enemy is randomized into every other one, I mean that one crawlid is a watcher knight and another one is a husk, how can I change this?

B. There isn't some magic "default" seed

You need to simply not randomize everything

#

Note: You'll need to select "Sync Vanilla" when you get to the ItemSync part. And you may want to download Rando Vanilla Tracker on the installer, so that you can sync more things. Additionally, there's not a way to prevent the costs of things from randomizing, but this shouldn't drastically affect the playthrough

🔹 Scarab doesn't open correctly on MacOS

Move the file you downloaded (mac.zip) to your Desktop
Double-Click it, and Scarab should appear
Right-Click the Scarab icon, and select "show contents"
Go into the MacOS folder, and then double-click the "Scarab" file.

🔹 ⚠️Scarab cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

In the Finder on your Mac, locate the app you want to open. Don’t use Launchpad to do this! It doesn’t allow access the shortcut menu.
Control + click the app icon, then choose "Open" from the shortcut menu.
Click "Open".
The app is now saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it like normal.

Scarab is made for patch 1.5.78+
Modinstaller 1 & 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2
there aren't installers for other patches.

🔹 Something didn't install correctly

Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file, and that it's not in your Downloads folder.
Run the installer as Administrator

hollowpirate Your game is pirated / illegitimate.
Piracy is not supported in most communities for games. Mods are not considered compatible with pirated copies, and you will not get troubleshooting support in any of the main servers for them.

HK Modding is only supported on the official versions from Steam, GoG, or the Microsoft Store.

I want to migrate my older save files (on Steam) over to the Nintendo Switch, but the main issue is that I was playing HK on the CrossOver version of Steam (and therefore, technically, the PC version of HK) on my Mac. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Does anyone know if it’s possible to migrate HK save files from the CrossOver version of Steam to the Switch?

Well mods only work for the few versions of the game I have mentioned before (steam gog and also the Xbox gamepass) so unless you have one of those mods will not work with your game

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world. Enemies have separate health and can be in different places; items/abilities must be collected separately; breakable objects must be broken separately.

I'm literally only here for this message, but:
HkmpTag gives you all items. Only use it when playing tag.

Your screen being all black is usually caused by missing a dependency and/or having out dated mods.

Make sure you followed the guide for Hosting that was posted above.

Having multiple Gun Class charms equipped can also break the gun.

This is a known issue, and Custom Knight is not considered compatible with HP.

Open the desired Save File, pause and Apply the skin in the Mods Menu.

In the new save file I played through the game regularly up until I tried to talk to Cornifer. I pressed up to talk to him but no dialogue loaded. I had the same issue with Sly and Cornifer's wife

I've downloaded couple "pirated" version of hollowknight before but then i found out that the mods doesnt work on pirated version so i decided to buy it on steam and uninstalled the pirated version. But somehow the game just stuck on blackscreen during startup, and i tried to use the scarab but it keeps saying couldnt find the right path to Hollowknight related kinda stuff when it obviously is "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Hollow Knight\hollow_knight_Data"

❗Hollow knight Crashes upon opening, after installing a mod
This glitch can happen for a number of reasons make sure that all the reasons listed listed below don't apply to you.

🔹 Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used.

Scarab is made for patch 1.5.78+
Modinstaller 1 & 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2
there aren't installers for other patches.

🔹 Something didn't install correctly

Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file, and that it's not in your Downloads folder.
Run the installer as Administrator

hollowpirate Your game is pirated / illegitimate.
Piracy is not supported in most communities for games. Mods are not considered compatible with pirated copies, and you will not get troubleshooting support in any of the main servers for them.

HK Modding is only supported on the official versions from Steam, GoG, or the Microsoft Store.

Whenever i try to select a skin and go into the game, the skin isnt being applied. When i go back to the "custom knight" mod options it is also back to default.
Same with the QoL of life mod. When i activate it in the mod options, go into a game and back into the menu -> mod options, it is set to off again.

🔹 Gun doesn't work / HUD is jank

Hollow Point doesn't work on new saves. Save and quit, then reload the save file.
Having multiple Gun Class charms equipped can also break the gun.

🔹 I disabled it and now healing doesn't work right
Hollow Point edits how Soul works on a file.
Here are ways to fix it:

🔹Not working with Custom Knight skins!
This is a known issue, and Custom Knight is not considered compatible with HP.
Here's steps that sometimes work for people (but if they don't, then you'll just need to play with the default skin):

Uninstall/Disable Hollow Point
Launch the game, and Apply the skin in the Main Menu.
Open the desired Save File, pause and Apply the skin in the Mods Menu.
Save and Quit, then close the game.
Re-enable Hollow Point.

How to fix Installer Errors
🔹 Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
🔹 Make sure that all 4 installer files have been Extracted from the .zip and that the new folder isn't in your Downloads folder. (Extract the 4 files to your desktop)
🔹 Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator".

Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight/

To easily get ModLog on Windows:

Press ⊞ + R

Copy and paste this into it %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight and hit "OK"

ModLog.txt is in this folder.
