Pretty much any art program that support transparency and layers works.
Commonly used programs are I see people use include Krita (free) and Firealpaca.

The modding server (pinned in #modding-discussion ) has a decent write-up about software and info on skin creation in the Art Resources channel, and a few Skin Creators regularly chat there (and in #modding-discussion here) if you're looking for more advice.

Well I did that and backed up the Scarab install, mod data, and even the AppData stuff for Scarab.

Scarab auto-exits w/o internet access tho. So even though mods are installed, there's no way to easily enable or disable them. Or know which mods were enabled prior to losing access to internet.

There's no way for it to do its core features without internet (actually downloading mods or checking versions). Enabling/disabling in scarab is unreliable anyway and many people always manually manage that even if they have internet

After installing, in order to actually use the mod
When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If there is also some larger text that says "Load Enemy Randomizer", then press that button to randomize the enemies using the default settings (Note: you will need to wait a few minutes while this loads). If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.

so i was playing some hollow point rand yesterday and accidentally launched my save with the mod on so i closed it and the game and when i heal i can heal with like a very small amount of soul that u cant even cast a spell with using spell twister

Hey, been having a very small issue with godseekerplus where if I enable P5 health to fight in ascended boss arenas with lower health, it seems to not work with the half damage ascended setting, meaning I can practice on single damage ascended but if I wanna do p5 health I take double damage, it really doesn't matter much. Not a big deal, but it would be really nice for practice if there was a workaround someone could suggest

For some reason my Modding API won't turn off. I'm using scarab and tried disabling all mods, as well as the "Disable API" option, but when I open the game, it's still there. How to fix Installer Errors
🔹 Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
🔹 Make sure that all 4 installer files have been Extracted from the .zip and that the new folder isn't in your Downloads folder. (Extract the 4 files to your desktop)
🔹 Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator".

This glitch can happen for a number of reasons make sure that all the reasons listed listed below don't apply to you.

🔹 Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used.

  • Scarab is made for patch 1.5.78+
  • Modinstaller 1 & 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2
  • there aren't installers for other patches.

🔹 Something didn't install correctly

  • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file, and that it's not in your Downloads folder.
  • Run the installer as Administrator

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

  • MoreSaves Mod: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Mod Menu. Pause the game then go to Options>Mods>MoreSaves to edit save files in game.
  • QoL mod: If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.

How to use Scarab in Microsoft Store
🔹 First enter the Xbox app and move your mouse over Hollow Knight on the left bar.
🔹 Click the three points then click "Manage".
🔹 Go to the "Files" tab and select "Browse...".
🔹 Click Hollow Knight then Content, click the path bar and copy it.
🔸Run Scarab as admin and when it asks you for the path paste what copied before.

Alternate Method:
🔹 Click on your profile then "Settings"
🔹 Go to "General" tab and select "CHANGE FOLDER"
🔹 Look for a folder where you want to install the game (Preferably inside a folder in your desktop).

Save Files
The save files for Hollow Knight are shared between all installs of the game, and are easily interacted with.

🔹 What do the save files looks like?

  • Hollow Knight save files are in the form of user#.dat, where # is the save slot for the file..
  • You can take a file named user3.dat and rename it to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot.
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer.

🔹 Reverting Backup files

  • You have save file backups that are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. Typically speaking, you will have your last three backups.
  • You can set a backup to be the real file by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup file.

🔹 Modded save files

  • If you are using mods, a modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). Both this file and the user#.dat are part of the save.

When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.

🔸 Why do skins take so long to make/Why is making skins so difficult?
Making a skin involves redrawing every sprite relevant to the skin - at the very least, all the sprites that feature the Knight. That, alone, is over 500 sprites. More detailed skins, editing spells and HUDs can go up to over 850 sprites. All of these sometimes needs to be redrawn over and over. Depending on the complexity of the design, making a skin can take well over months of work to complete.

🔹 Where can I commission a skin, and how much would it cost?
You can ask in #art-discussion on this server, on in #recruit in the modding server linked in the pinned messages of #modding-discussion.
The price varies with the skin's complexity, but a simple one consisting only of the Knight's basic spritesheets will cost upwards of 100 USD and Euros/90 GBP, if only because of the sheer amount of time that needs to be spent on it. More complex skins and ones of higher quality would increase in cost.

did a randomized playthrough with a friend where I attempted to randomize nothing so that we could play the game normally but with itemsync. I noticed two peculiar things however:

  1. My Grimmchild started with three flames, making it so I could fight TMG after gathering the first set and rendering the last set useless

  2. The crossroads never became infected even after I killed broken vessel and one of the dreamers

So I've had this issue for a while in HK. As you can see, my charms are apparently free—yes, I can continue to equip all of them without overcharming, so it's not just a visual bug. The corner text spazzes out too, but that doesn't really bother me as much as the charms tbh. I've tried everything I could think of to fix it. I had some mods installed, but I moved all of them out of the LocalLow HK folder, I deleted all global settings files and even any other lingering mod files (like the mod log and whatnot), and then I verified the files' integrity through Steam a few different times now. Can't figure out what's causing this. NotLikeThis I'm pretty sure my game is back to its vanilla state now, yet it's still like this.

On linux (Ubuntu), and I just downloaded Scarab and extracted it to a folder on my desktop. I run the file, and it's just black (see picrel). I reinstalled the file, and restarted my PC, no luck.

🔹 Folder: Make sure your folder is extracted, and on your desktop/subfolder inside your desktop and that there are the 4 files inside that came in the zipped folder.

🔹 Permissions: Ensure your antivirus software, windows defender, firewall, or equivalent are not blocking the scarab program from running.

🔹 VPN: If your scarab files are in order, restarting made no change and the issue persists use a VPN, If you don't already have one, https://1.1.1.1/ is a trusted free VPN.

🔹 Reset Installer: If using a VPN didn't work try resetting Scarab by doing the following:

How to fix Installer Errors
🔹 Make sure Hollow Knight is CLOSED.
🔹 Make sure that all 4 installer files have been Extracted from the .zip and that the new folder isn't in your Downloads folder. (Extract the 4 files to your desktop)
🔹 Right-click the installer file, and select "Run as Administrator".

This glitch can happen for a number of reasons make sure that all the reasons listed listed below don't apply to you.

🔹 Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used.

  • Scarab is made for patch 1.5.78+
  • Modinstaller 1 & 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2
  • there aren't installers for other patches.

🔹 Something didn't install correctly

  • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file, and that it's not in your Downloads folder.
  • Run the installer as Administrator

After installing, in order to actually use the mod
When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If there is also some larger text that says "Load Enemy Randomizer", then press that button to randomize the enemies using the default settings (Note: you will need to wait a few minutes while this loads). If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.
