Hi all, so with the release of Silksong I'm tempted to get Hollow knight again but I am also just looking for some advice.

So I have actually played the game before on xbox years ago on (did not complete it but had decent enough progress and only have vague memories) and now I'm on PC with Keyboard and Mouse so I am a bit worried if MnKB will affect my enjoyment and what keybinds are optimal etc. I will not be able to get a controller as my old one is practically broken beyond repair and a new one seems a bit like an unnecessarily big purchase atm.

My issues are with the way I play games now and my ability to enjoy games such as this. To elaborate, I would tend to rush for the movement upgrades, ||nail arts|| and damage upgrades ASAP and stuff like best charms etc because I like the feeling of just having the "best" and "optimal" gear in any game and the "freedom" that it gives. However, I am worried that I am potentially spoiling my enjoyment of the game and worried if it is a legit way to even enjoy it?

I basically tend to have a habit of looking up guides and trying to optimise stuff in a "speedrun" sort of way; searching for "whats the best...?" "how to get...?" "how to beat...?" etc, ive had a similar experience in Elden Ring which I believe might have led me to not enjoy it as much as I hoped I would have.

Also, I'm worried about not unlocking certain items/events/"things" that may be locked due to my decisions, usually I wanna try and make sure I have done EVERYTHING in my first playthrough to truly be satisfied that I have played the game for as much as it has to offer.

Additionally, what are some ways to get the most enjoyment out of the lore, world and 'environment'/feel of the game so I can get immersed and feel the highs and lows of each fight and lore extract?

Any advice is greatly appreciated and feel free to give any other tips.

But to address the actual question- I’ll admit I’m rather biased on the subject but I do believe hk really is best experienced as blind as possible without looking up where to go and what to do. Half the fun is getting lost in the world and experiencing it for yourself. Of course there’s no harm in asking for help with bosses/directions if you’re truly stumped on something (as well as asking a it optimal charm builds because Imo they do actually just make the game more fun)
Of course this is just my opinion and everybody plays games differently but yeah I generally suggest not just following a guide when playing through hk (or any metroidvania really)

I was wondering if there was a way to know what can affect certain interactions or acquisition of items etc as I like to try and maximise everything in one playthrough

Idk man, i just struggle with trying to be "in" the story game before i helplessly start trying to maximise it and it just...hurts in a way

this is quite subjective and up to preference. some ppl prefer arrow keys for movement, some ppl prefer WASD, and even some others will prefer IJKL or similar. and some play with mouse and some dont. but i will say that ergonomically u should be putting the most important actions on separate fingers. so stuff like nail swing, jump, ||dash||, etc should go on separate fingers.
and if u r on a different input device like controller its also a similar situation. also up to preference.

Killing a dreamer causes annoying map changes, soemthign to do with the fully upgraded nail has permenant quest and 2 achievements tied to it and the Grimm DLC has a permenant choice in the later half

I’ll be honest, Hollow Knigjt has 2 things you can enjoy it through the most,

The exploration, the feeling of getting lost in the world and finding your own way forward

And secondly, the gameplay itself for a majority of the gameplay will feel slow and not as fun that is until you reach end game stuff, when you start learning all the tech and tricks and put hours into doing bosses with a challenge restriction like taking no hit

I've died more times to her TODAY from me staggering her causing her to stop her attack in place and not pass me and thus either me landing on her or her falling in her stagger animation onto me than I EVER have from her attacks.

Apparently she can telefrag too.

Her stagger animation has a different hitbox from her standing animation.

So if you stagger her while attacking her her STAGGERING can one shot you.

This is so stupid.
