From someone who has grown up in it, and still dealing with it I will give you a piece of knowledge that I recommend carrying with you.
Life in itself is a stick. One end is ugly, the other is beautiful. Fate carries that stick and sometimes, it will feel like fate is bombarding you with relentless attacks. Sometimes it will feel like fate has sat back watching you and suddenly decides to spear you with it- straight to the face.
Sometime fate holds it out as you're walking along to trip you up.

You can never control which end hits you during all of it- but there is never only ugly nor is there only beauty. There will come a time during that relentless attack where you block and the beauty hits you. Be it a momentary glimpse of the most amazing sunset you've ever seen or a car passing by on a rainy day and the water splash completely misses you.

I originally had an aim for art/music therapy with children but due to life and circumstances- my current goal is equine-assisted therapy for the physically and mentally disabled. Specifically veterans and children.
The farm I want to work with directly belongs to a really good friend of mine that runs a mustang rescue for traumatized mustangs that have the option for a quality life with their own kind of therapy through being trained and adjusting to a normal life through trust- not broken into obedience.

From what I can see, many of the early experiments weren't held by many with an actual desire for understanding or scientific reasoning. They wanted to be right and respected, without regard to who they had to trample over to get there.
Maybe one day a proper study can be done to give a basic profile to those early researchers, but there is no way to know since we will never know them personally.
