I feel like the tonal dissonance was really weird between the realistic geopolitical war crime stuff and the wacky hero stuff
Like the movie ends with probably the biggest political international incident in modern history, and its played off like nothing
Reminds me of when Marvel tries to put in geopolitics (outside of Winter Soldier which did a good job) where everything feels kind of phony and frivolous
Sorry Im not trying to rag on the movie, I liked it, but not nearly as much as I thought I would
i love the energy particle effects, gives a comic booky vibe
Bro you're just spamming at this point please stop
I think they’re leaving it up for one of the show things that are coming up. It ends with Flag and co. Noticing how Superheroes “call the shots now”, which will lead up to one of these Waller/Flag shows that explore Argus and the sorts. We already had illegal blacksite Suicide Squad operations canceling Waller by the end of Peacemaker and then she goes out to make Creature Commandos aka Task Force X.
I think another issue here is that it’s interwoven in the character arcs but the story of each show/movie is separate from one another.
isnt The Suicide Squad non-canon now?
whats a creature commando
Amanda Waller’s second crew after getting canceled for making Suicide Squad an immoral project.
It’s animated and has Rick Flag Sr.
oh I see
Is the Peacemaker on the TV in Superman a different one from the one in the Suicide Squad and the show, since they're totally different continuities?
Yea Chop Suey Squad is loosely based on DCU, but specifically Gunn said if it’s a direct reference from said Squad movie in the DCU movies then that’s canon. It’s like how George treated his Star Wars canon with EU.
Season 2 might answer that.
Ah right
Because the first season is played straight forward after the events of Suicide Squad. It also has an element that Lex Luthor would try to use in the Superman movie with dimensional portals
I really hope they dont do multiverse crap
In the new trailer Peace sees himself. Assuming the discussion on the plot of season 2 ||he encounters the one we see in Superman as the DCU version is everything he wants; he’s respected enough to even be in a talk show vs how he was in his world where the only guy he stopped was kite man||
Im so sick of that trope
It’s more like a bridge for this character specifically
That way they can keep his thing going without bothering with what goes where.
Same
I was very amused in Deadpool 3 when he|| just spends like 2 minutes shitting on the idea of multiverses||
Well thought-out alternate timelines are fun, but thats different
I havnt read lots of Superman but that is the best one I've read
I’ve mentioned it above the images but it captures everything right that makes him Superman, the only thing different is his ideology but that mixes with what he believes to be right. It’s honestly my favorite for its simplicity in its reading yet deep into the Super lore behind it. The only iffy parts I will say is the inclusion of side characters like Batman or Wonder, but even then they served their purpose challenging a Kryptonian set on a path for what he thinks would bring peace.
Lex is also quite a fun exploration of his character. Even the silly line, “I bet if Superman were American we’d be great friends” is quite tacky but works in the Cold War environment of its story.
I remember it getting weird and confusing towards the end
like a time loop or something
That part is really odd
Like nothing really warranted that to happen but I guess the future Lex’s figured this was the ideal move in that world.
Still saddest death in that story is Bizarro
Especially after the Londoners thought he was a monster Superman should kill.
I'm sorry lex creating an entire army of monkeys just to cancel superman on twitter will always remain the funniest thing to ever my grace my television

I want an edit with this song
I would've liked to see him in 2025 Superman instead of Ultraman if they really wanted to go the clone/duplicate route
And "Ultraman" just makes me think of Ultraman
Gunn is setting that up with Ultra…
Idk why not set him up as bizarro but we’ll see
Who tf is Mr Terrific
I wish they gave some context for Hawk Girl and Terrific
I thought Terrific was that New Gods guy who flies around in the chair

Yeah, when he was in the cartoon I could only think how much his back must hurt
hes so stiff
lol
I guess if you have superpowers you can handle being crunched up
Isn’t he the new god that died by a magic bullet?
Sets up the second Crisis story
I’m such a nerd that I remember who that dude was wtf
I barely read that story
Like first issue
Geezus the magic bullet flew backwards in time
Im not sure, I only know him from the cartoon
The only experience I have reading ongoing superhero comics is Swamp Thing and the first 3 volumes of New 52 Batman
I only remember him from that story.
I usually stick to mini series like Red Son and The Long Halloween
I think a good hefty story is the Batman Eternals one
Pretty fun
Absolute threw me off guard. A Batman that is 6’9”
With his Bat logo as a make shift axe is ridiculous
Gawd dam
Jack Reacher looking mofo
Literally. Makes Frank Miller’s look tiny
his bat symbol is overweight
Like wtf is this.
I’m for it because it’s the same writer behind Eternal, I just need to read it.
Get bat chopped
Absolute Batman designs are so peak
They’re pretty metal.
More metal than Batman Metal
That was a bad fumble. Liked the concept or at least the somewhat meta narrative that the DC Universe is primarily run on Batman but it only makes that narrative worse as it’s just glazing on Batmen taking down everyone from their own universe.
nah
Man I appreciate this film even more now its a bit rushed but it has everything
watched superman again with my friends now that its out in digital, and my rating went up
its a 9/10 for me now
What was your rating before?
Nah. It’s less goofy and much better than whatever Gunn tried to attempt.
Gunn’s movie is similar to Pre Crisis Superman comics, which was probably the worst era in DC comics.
It's hilarious how Hoult auditioned for Superman and got lex. Reminds me of when Hiddleston auditioned for Thor and got Loki 😂. It's an interesting way to get the roles.
Nah Synder would’ve had krypto look like Guts wolf demon from Berserk https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/berserk/images/f/fc/Manga_E226_Beast_of_Darkness.png/revision/latest?cb=20190402154814
And he would die in the first five minutes, and would never be brought up again
it was like 8-8.5 before
but everything just really held up and worked on my second watch
I dont know man, a flying dog wearing a cape, Green Lantern shooting giant middle fingers at people, self deprecating robots, drunk Supergirl. It was pretty goofy
thats a you thing
Like its ok to like goofy things. Just because its goofy doesn't mean its bad but seems a bit like denial to say those things are just "color and heart"
I didn't find Superman goofy
but having fastical elements like flying dogs, or slurrs doesnt make a film goofy. Thats just a matter of personal psycology.
cause with that sense F4 is goofy aswell, so is every other r-rated cbm
from that perspective The boys and Invincible are goofy
so is the snyder verse
its the sincerity in execution that defines goofiness for me. Love and thunder i consider as goofy
Never saw F4, but most marvel movies are goofy so i'd probably have the same opinion
The Boys has exploding penises and laser babies, and Invincible has twin clone inventor monsters and comic relief martian sneaks, so also goofy in my opinion
I don't consider fantastic elements to be "goofy"
Goofy is a tone
Does the movie take itself seriously
I think we have very different ideas of what "seriously" means
perfect response but i think he's better off not caring about it
If you're going to put in a caped flying dog from the comics, might as well use the name from the comics
That users comment James responded to is so weird, Idk maybe this is because I’ve got no background as an English major and wasn’t a “film criticism” major in uni either?
but what exactly is “bad writing”… the way I’ve seen it used is mainly as a way for a person to say they don’t like it or get others to shut up— but structure it in a way sounds more “objective”.
So according to who is the writing bad? What standard are they using to say if a film has bad writing or no?Do all stories, character creations follow some magical recipe that shouldn’t be violated?
its subjective, like everything else about art.
James ^
Even though I wasn't a big fan of this movie, I appreciate Gunn's dedicate to a specific tone
For me Gunn is best with an R rating

I know he’s no Superman but DC ❤️
I really love both Peacemaker and Suicide
99% sure that sounds like Matt Berry voicing Bane
Never was a fan of that one. Preferred the original.
I walked by that mall the other day and said, “hmm I know this from somewhere”, I saw a bust of George Romero and everything clicked.
Pretty funny to see the og on set location. Reminded me when I saw the onset location of the opening sequence at a mall in Wonder Woman 84’z
I once lived by that one too. It was nice to see it be given some sort of life even if the movie is poo.
The original is better but I still like the remake, its much better than most post 28 Days Later zombie movies
although thats a pretty low bar, we had like a 15 year zombie craze and got maybe 5 good movies out of it
Woah
Savage
Also can’t wait for the Clayface movie
This looks amazing
too bad this doesent cover keaton..
I think his suit is wearable idk what else
It be funnier if it was Starro
James Gunn says corporations play a huge role in the DCU:
"There’s Luthor Corp, there’s Lord Tech and Stagg Industries and Wayne Enterprises, which are the four big companies that are vying for another type of domination."
(via https://t.co/NfzgVXoFu0)
Love this type of worldbuilding
This is too meta
Why does he have a dong
I think it’s a shot of Clayface told to do a seggsy scene so his clay body formed a pp.

The DCEU is no more, and James Gunn is ringing in a new era of DC movies with his take on Superman, which in true Gunn fashion is full of weird monsters, tons of characters, and so. many. jokes.
Superman definitely raises some questions. Like how is Lex...
wow, this adds a whole new layer to his character. truly one of this generation's greatest actors
Source?
dude got the part without breaking a Coren-sweat.

This is impressive
It's a shame the films a somewhat flop
325 for marketing and making the film iirc and its about to hit 600 million
It's so good, I'm surprised it's that liw
Anything the man makes is gold
His average for his past 7 projects is 89 on RT
I haven't watched earlier Gunn projects but he hasn't disappointed me one bit with his superhero movies and shows
I haven't seen TSS, Peacemaker, or Creature Commandos
All 3 are fantastic
GOTG1 - 8.8/10
GOTG2 - 9/10
GOTG3 - 9.8/10
Superman - 8.6/10
Ya
I've heard. I'll definitely watch them eventually
I finished watching Creature Commandos yesterday. I like the plot twist at the end. And I found out that Weasel isn't a villain
Incorrect
It's nowhere close to that amount for marketing
I think Mr. E is saying 325 million dollars in total for Superman and that includes both production and marketing budget
ah I see that now
very odd way of saying it
plus, it crossed that 600mil mark which y'all were obsessed with lol
Did you read what I said
I said for making and marketing the film
I believe it's made about the same that the first Iron Man film did?
Snyderverse, I think?
eh, I don't really care tbh
This is about Peacemaker though
And? Peacemaker cameo'd in this film. So they are connected

I hope we get a more evil luther in the future
I loved holts performance but this pales in comparison to some of the stuff hes done in the comics
and now he has even more motivation to do them
He’s taking his first steps
Yeah, I just hope we see his full evil potential
Like that time he stole 40 cakes
That was despicable
That’s pure evil bruh
Those cakes could’ve went to birthday parties
Or like a homeless shelter
Is Holt the best movie Lex?
Yes by far
Nope. Gene Hackman’s Lex was better.
Then comes Hoult
Agreed.
Yes in my opinion plus the most comic book accurate too
Not even close
Who would you say is the best lex
I think she means "yes and it's not even close" since she's praised him a lot before
example
Ahh gotcha
Nic Hoult
Same, I was confused

She definitely missed out part of the sentence lol

...what?
I have no clue
Aw hell yeah
Okay what the flip
That’s so fast
But yet again, something Cavil didn’t even get to have the chance to do in such short time. Aside from JL movie but even then…
to be fair, at the start of the mcu popular characters were getting a new movie every two years
it is definitely fast but it's necessary
someone like superman should be a character we see pretty frequently
Oh I agree
That’s how you get a hype train going, it’s the reason why Marvel had its string of billion dollar films.
Can't believe we are already getting a sequel for Superman and that Luthor battle suit looks awesome
I'm honestly afraid that it won't do well since it's rumored to be going against The Avengers on the same day
What? There's no avengers film for the day. Also one of them would be moved if that was the case anyhow
Secret wars is set for Dec 2027
rumored by who????
avengers comes out like 6 months later
I think my worry with Supes sequel is hoping the cgi department isn’t overworked like crazy.
At least it’s not 3 movies a year ordeal with DC.
The reason why vfx is overworked is because of bad planning by the managers.
If they know they'll get the final edit by august 2024 (taking superman for example) even taking 6 months would put you at march 2025 for the finished product disregarding the final edits which is a comfortable three months before release.
Also, what happens with mcu movies regularly due to bad planning is reshoots even after a majority of vfx is completed leading to overinflated budgets and overworked artists.
All changes that were made to the pre screening cut of superman was removing stuff not replacing or adding them.
All studios need is to actually be professional and actually book vfx companies for a viable time.
The bosses at these companies will also bend over backwards for disney, wb etc because of the work and money they bring in but none of that extra money goes to the workers.
Vfx artists have regularly been looking to have a strong union but they're kind of outside the studio infrastructure so they get ignored while the crew members work along each other and provide more support regardless of specific job.
Rant over
it seems like dc is trying to do one big movie and one lower budget movie per year, which seems pretty reasonable
especially considering superman 25 had a much bigger production-to-release time than most marvel movies
superman and f4 released only weeks apart yet f4 started filming after superman had wrapped
Also it’s not shot for the action first then shoot to direct scenes as an afterthought
yeah they can actually do previs and work on vfx shots before profuction even starts
Although it seemed F4 FS didn’t seem like that either.
i would say for the most part F4 had pretty good vfx, other than a couple weird cgi baby moments
Im excited for the next DCU entries
supergirl and man of tomorrow got me hyped asf
wanna see what dcu batman is like.
Same
I'm really hyped for clayface too
same, im very curious

james gunn has done it again, bravo

So it’s not Superman 2
It is Superman 2
Gunn confirmed on X tho?
I tried finding your source but couldn't find it, could you post it?
it is not
gunn has been pretty open that while it is the next chapter in superman's story and he is a main character in the movie, it is not "superman 2"
my guess is a superman/lex teamup movie, with lex being the titular "man of tomorrow"
at least that was my immediate thought when i saw the announcement
i think we will have a better idea of what it will be by the end of peacemaker s2
Tf does this mean
It’s confusing cause Superman’s alternate name is Man of Tomorrow
46 or 43? Even then its bad enough that Batman had more lines
43 actually
Ultimate Cut as well? Ugh
Actually that does have more with the difference of 17.
60 lines then?
And how many does Batman have
How many lines does Superman get in MoS and Snyder Cut
And Josstice League cos why not
103 MoS
Ok there’s no way… apparently ZSJL had him with 13 lines

The source is just a radio station so I will call it a rumour for now
there are many possibilities, brainiac might be teased
it could even be parasite for all we know
atomic skull would be fun
not a rumor, james gunn said it on the howard stern show
he posted the clip himself
Ah gotcha
I assume rumour and hesitate to believe when the place i see post it doesnt source properly
Correct
Hear me out, charlize theron as mercy graves
Okay I can get on board with this
Mercy is fairly obscure and could lead to some interesting setpieces.
lmfaooo
although i gotta agree with gunn from the little i’ve seen from her she seem super
(see what i did there)
yes lmao
Just don't kill her off in a courtroom this time
so it is brainiac?
no doubt
Looks more like Doomsday, could be darkside?
doomsday? on the second movie?? again????

I like Gunn’s DCU so far but I’m not sure how it’s gonna work when other directors are in the mix
i mean peacemaker had other directors
gunn did write it though
i don't think it'll be an issue, projects with different tones and styles will only benefit the dcu in my opinion
Gunn going to ghost direct them all
Yeah but it’s still 100% Gunn’s style
It would probably be his style as long as he writes the script
According to Gunn he hopes other director’s can help themselves with their style as to keep DC fresh in tone and approach. Depending on how Supergirl and Clayface preform we’ll see how true this statement will be.
Mike Flanagan approached to him to even consider the Clayface movie. Which is why James thought the script was great enough to be the titular character’s body horror film.
So we wait and see, again I’m hopeful it’ll be good ones too. I’ve been enjoying Peacemaker S2 and genuinely want at least one more season with a now reformed Chris and a new mission in which he gets the recognition he wanted.
Should i watch this as well for the third time lol
I have done it and maybe you should too
I’ve done three times digital, five times in the theater with AMC A List
OHBSHOOT
Hell yeah
Yea it’s easily my favorite movie of the year. It isn’t even because of my love for Superman, it’s just a really beautiful movie in what it represents. Doggo also gives it extra points.
hell yeah ., KRYPTO was awesome espeically in that post credit scene
Cgi dogs
It is possible to train a real dog to do the scenes for Superman tho lol
Not necessary to use all cgi
True
They should've taught the dog to fly
Instead of all this chi garbage
Cgi*
(On a serious note, is probably easier since half krypton scenes have him flying or doing something a regular dog psychically cannot (like tossing lex around). If they did they could only use a real dog in a few scenes and it would be a large part CGI anyway
sorry but this is a stupid take
Literally you’re wasting a lot of money getting pre vis shots out of the dog it would be counterproductive. That’s like having TFA marketed like a practical heavy film when it’s coated with cg in most of its frames.
Some scenes do require cgi definitely
Like flying and laser eyes
But other scenes you can train a real dog for
By what I’ve heard regarding how tight the production company was at with work and meeting deadlines, they weren’t going to risk it. Dogs also get stressed out in those environments, it’s as demanding to get them to act on green screens and having colleagues more than just one guy. I agree that dogs still have a place for movies but WB definitely wouldn’t take a risk.
It’s more of a Gunn thing with his history of filmmaking. Peacemaker season 2 has sets that look to be filmed at an adjacent lot to Superman. That’s why the cameos were possible.
I just want to know the budget of peacemaker season 2 it looks cheaper.
How much was John Cena paid
1 million per episode
Others say over 500,000
definitely got the vibe it was cheaper as well
Yea the fact the Earth X is relegated on a suburban town and the set of the dimensional doors along with the prison were filmed in the adjacent lot.
Like I said above I believe they kept it cheap because Gunn is trying to not lose confidence of WB and make them act like they had for Zack’s films. It’s economic and serviceable but very small feeling.
Peacemaker is like Empire meet Twin Peaks Season 3 eps 15+16. Satisfying 15 but what a weird 16.
Bro gets to say lines on camera for a million and I can barely make a dime finding a job in my field of study 😭

Please keep Gunn

Same, I hope any company that buys Warner Bros will keep Gunn for the time being.
god i hope netflix doesnt buy warner bros
the snyder cultists will be fucking insufferable
#restorethesnyderverse will have a resurgence all over again
even though after the flop of rebel goon, i dont think netflix wants anything to do with snyder anymore lol
I think they are gonna say that regardless of any studio that buys WBD but Yes Netflix isn't gonna give huge money to Snyder anymore
Tbf I blame Netflix more than Snyder for Rebel Moon flopping
For forcing him to make neutered PG13 versions and releasing them first
They should've released the better R-rated version first
Then the PG13 versions later for those who want a lighter watch
except that the r rated version fucking sucked as well
He wasn’t forced, he agreed to that
yeah it was all a coordinated effort to artificially recreate the snyder cut hype
by intentionally releasing a bad movie and then hyping up the "true directors vision"
Better be the plan
The only way Netflix would fund it was if he did it that way
I don't think he would've done it that way unless he had to
thats simply untrue
he was given 100% creative freedom
it's all well reported
Can you provide some proof, because that's not what I've heard
Which he agreed to
Why wouldn't he
He wanted to get it made
That was the only way Netflix would give him the money
The full cut of Rebel moon was also panned
Yeah but the thing is netflix wouldn’t ofc want a 3h 24m movie be the main version even less people would’ve seen it
dunno why it sucks.
i've seen 3 hour long movies before.
its hyper violent which is always a plus.
story's not the worst
so i'm kinda stumped.
bad guy is really evil and played to...well maybe not perfection, but if you hate him, he doing a good job.
the r-rated versions were okay
still not great but definitely better than the pg13 versions
The PG version honestly is better
But as I said, I prefer my smoothie (movies that are mishmashes of a bunch of movies) smooth, like Quentin Tarantino
Not chunky... where I can tell where every single reference came from.
Difference is that the directors cut was not an entirely different movie
Rip dc

Honestly despise its algorithm features because it specifically goes for people I find annoying.
Jimmy Olsen show is happening…
I don’t mind it, hopefully it shows the zany elements of the DCU where otherwise it would be a bit difficult to take while being serious in the feature films.
There’s a Superman spinoff series, DC Crime, which is currently in the works at DC Studios and HBO Max, Deadline has confirmed. The series is billed as being akin to a true crime docuseries with Jimmy Olsen from Superman hosting (played by Skyler Gisondo in the summer blockbuster directed by James Gunn).
