Making it the number 1 film of the year... and with the rest of the year filled with art/drama films and other "not predicted to be box-office record breaking" kind of films, with Dune Part 2 delayed, I think it'll more or less be safe to celebrate Barbie as this year's big winner.

Napoleon, Wish, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Creator, Equalizer 3... all could still have legs, but at the moment I can't see a Barbie level phenomenon releasing for the rest of the year.

Inflation is just one of many factors and the idea that we should adjust for inflation old movies and many then say they are the highest grossing movies is ridiculous.. like you can't compare the situation in 1930s and beyond with right now. The viewing patterns were totally different.

I don't think inflation should even be considered for comparing box office. Like you can't compare a situation where we have so many streaming services and other forms of entertainment with movies from past years where yes there was TV, but there was not nearly as many content as right now.. not to mention no social media and other things.

Frankly, production costs and economics are also very different, so it’s WAY more than inflation.

Basically, the viewership is offset by higher ticket prices, but inflation alone doesn’t account for crew and actor fee increase, as well as material and marketing budget increase, and theater per screen operation cost DECREASE. Basically we can say that Barbie IN TODAY’s market, is about the same as far as percentage of theater-goers going to see it compared to the crazy mass of viewership NUMBERS of The Exorcist. On a business level, Barbie is probably getting close with VOD and Streaming, but still a little shy of The Exorcist in pure inflated numbers. It’s an ok guideline, but yes it doesn’t show the whole picture.

On the theater side, while they don’t make as much on concessions anymore because they have to profit share with Coca Cola and Starbucks and whatever, their costs is more than offset with the per screen operating cost and cheaper per screen staff… which muddies things even more.

My point is, it’s significantly more than just inflation, if we take account of all the numbers… hence the box office of 480-some millions of The Exorcist probably carries more pure economical power than Barbie.

Just pure inflation, it’s 2.9billion, but as to actual economic value, it’s possibly a lot more.

Meaning, how much that 450-odd millions that it made after breaking even can DO, if put back into the market (or to make more films) is likely a lot more than the 1billion or so that they made after breaking even on Barbie, can do.

Went to see this again today, first time for my mum. It being national cinema day, the screening was packed. I feel like most people had already seen it though as the jokes didn't generate as much laughter as the first screening did.

While I’m pretty sure this may have been a simple scheduling concern, I still think it’s a missed opportunity that neither Jodi Benson nor Micheal Keaton had some kind of cameo in the movie. Would have been fitting since they are technically the first cinematic Barbie and Ken before Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
