Don’t get me wrong, this was FUN and I chuckled a lot. But having heard it was so much more profound than you’d expect etc & knowing what greta’s capable of, I was a tad disappointed by how superficial the ‘deep’ message was. It felt sanitised/Hollywood and tonally, the film was all over the place, like one minute a musical number, then something sincere, then a pure enactment of Barbie stereotypes. It was like a busy print, fighting to make its statement as something unique but drowning in comedy bits & generic girl boss speeches ??

I think you put this really well. I felt that some of the jokes or messages were overdone and became annoying at some parts. I often think that when movies do this they're doing it because the general masses or children won't GET it unless the point is driven home. That being said I don't think that ruined the movie for me and I'll definitely see it again.

my absolutely favorite thing about the barbie movie is that at no point whatsoever it explains how the mattel employes know about barbieland like imagine starting your new job on mattel and the first thing they tell you on orientation is

But yeah to expand my points, it's not comparable due to the subject matter. Women Talking is based on a irl event where over 100 women were sexually assaulted by their male peers in a religious community, and the movie tackles on the different viewpoint about whether they should leave their family or not in exile
Barbie is more about exploring how women can have various roles outside their box and should be understand toward children

For what is worth, while I don't know for sure what was your friend's angle, I saw Barbie today, and I do think a comparison is apt. They are both recent well publicized rhetorical exercises on feminism™ that don't go nearly as far as they could or should, and empty themselves of any punch through their backhanded construction. I do vastly prefer Women Talking and I am glad that movie exists. In the case of Barbie, that happens by design, so I am afraid I cannot even say that.
I will try to lay further thoughts on Barbie here a bit later, or tomorrow.

Not really, they COULD exhibit it everywhere, they CHOSE not to. For Universal, Oppenheimer is a prestige project, so as long as they were able to write it off, it’s all good. Of course it also performed well for the number of screens it showed on, and that’s better than just writing it off. Barbie needs min 300mil to write off, and is designed more as a commercial venture by WB. Oppenheimer only needs 200mil to write off, that’s like “low pressure” territory.

Oh yes, but the key difference stems from the fact that one is designed as prestige, while the other is designed to be commercial. If Oppenheimer was designed to be commercial, then it would’ve probably been shorter.

As a film, it’s hard to rate Oppenheimer vs Barbie. I will say that what was really amazing for me, is that they BOTH were able to achieve what they set out to achieve…

They both “works” extremely well in their respective spectrum.

On the other hand, it’s hard to see Barbie winning many major awards, while Oppenheimer is the prestige film of the year, so far.

Fun discussions from back before I saw Barbie, that I predicted that it’ll be hard to reach 1billion, but it looks like it’ll be close… I love to be proven wrong on it… it’ll likely hit 1 billion, but hard to gauge how much beyond will it make before the end of the theatrical run.

Gauging from my local multiplex… Barbie is still playing packed houses in all 9 screenings in my local cinema, Oppenheimer is playing 2 packed, 2 half, and 2 semi-empty theaters. Amazing performance achievements in their segments.

Both has 2.5 weeks left, easily 50% more box office. Meaning Barbie will likely end up between 1.2 and 1.4 billion, while Oppenheimer is going to do 500 to 700million.

They are both instant classics in my book.

I’m too lazy to do performance charts, but from quick rough look at the numbers, they are almost identical curves.

like if we were to see my interpretation of it in a positive light it's that in the end it doesn't actually fix a lot of things (a lesser movie would have made Ferrera CEO in the end or something, implying that things have in fact "been fixed" in the real world and that the struggle is not ongoing). Instead this is a movie that might inspire kids to go "yes this is unfair and yes we do need to do something about it"

I think that was a critical part of the films message, and to an extent I find Barbieland to be a metaphor for the imaginary world where these problems have been solved. The attitude is mostly gone, but more so the Obama era liberal explosion of we’ve won we are at the end of history, when the work isn’t actually completed. There’s just some lip service paid and if you squint it kinda looks like it’s solved. This tendency is still somewhat present, and worth examine tho imo
