oop
get your roles then
veiny hands

How dare they
where does the double bracket notation for the power series come from?
I never seem to do anything useful with my free time
I'm so frustrated with this
I just want to finally start doing something useful and live a good life
what can I do in my free time that would lead to a good end goal?
wsp
wsp?
maybe try to reaad some books
read*
what books specifically?
if you really want to be educated, try shakespeare
Shakespeare isn't useful for any of my end goals
oh, what r ur end goals?
learn a skill that I can apply to make money
ECONOMICS!!!!!
THEY R RLLY USEFUL!!!
you can learn about stocks anywhere
and invest in them too
yea lol
this book called freakconomics, it doesn't exactly tell you about money, but it can tell you lots of tricks in life
which could be helpful in terms of making money
i actually own the book too
it helps
Freakonomics is quite objectively not a book about economics
i mean i only read like half the book so-
yea
Also some of the results they present are pretty widely criticized
yea ig
I will say that they can present information in a very fun way
They're quite effective communicators
I'm tired of life
I no longer want to try making something of myself
I'm stupid and incompetent and will never earn enough money to live
no you are not
why so
I'm not skilled at any e-sport, I'm not a good programmer, I don't know how to make music, I don't have a good computer to do video editing for Youtube videos, I have no creativity whatsoever
in what way can I be useful to anyone?
those careers are not the careers that most people do
there are many other jobs like construction, graphic design, writing, teaching
it's hard to make a living with a regular-ass job in Romania
also i can teach you programming
my dad doesn't even earn 1000 dollars a month and he works on excel sheets
we both can teach you programming and maths
i bet that (except for programming) less than 10,000 people make a living off these jobs
bet

ok did
<@&268886789983436800> this looks like academic dishonesty

I could... just not with money

Payment in land
Yea... that...
hajime no ippo
You know what type of land I would buy
A few 0.5 meter × 0.5 meter squares scattered randomly around times square or sth
Collecting rent like landmines
bro bought the empty lot in yakuza 0
And some galvanised square steel and screws from aunt
sounds like a gym for trans guys 😎
(the problem is finding one)
After working through locally convex spaces, weak and weak* topologies everything FINALLY makes sense. And this is after I submitted my previous assignment just by blindly following the definitions. Beforehand, everything just worked out, but now everything that worked out ALSO makes sense. Small victories. 😄
Nice
Chat gpt ahh joke 💀 Why did the depressed cubic feel so down?
Because no matter how hard it tried, it just couldn’t find its real roots!
Suremark that was a good joke
u are a joke
do logic and abs.alg lectures have recordings? (am i making sense with this question? sry for bad eng)
thx!
yo accept my frq
I would laugh if depressed cubics somehow didn't have real roots... 😔
The Hess triangle is a triangular tile mosaic set in a sidewalk in New York City's West Village neighborhood at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Christopher Street. The plaque reads "Property of the Hess Estate which has never been dedicated for public purposes." The plaque is an isosceles triangle, with a 25+1⁄2-inch (65 cm) base and 27+1⁄2-inc...
Pls read this
Yeah but it’s a cubic, and it’s depressed, and polynomials roots r usually studied
It’s funny
Maybe it would be funnier if it was
“Why was the cubic depressed? It couldn’t find its quadratic term…”
But this isn’t as funny cuz looking for roots is something people do maybe the cubic was looking for its origins and its family…
Making the original joke funny
“In this essay I will…”
is the diffusivity coefficient just a weight function,

Guys help please I registered in ap Calculus BC my sophomore year and I need to self study now I already got a very good Calculus background. What is the better prep book to use Ap calculus barons 2025(cover both bc and ab and is 570 pages) or the princton ap calculus bc (only for bc and is 770 pages)
Sigma
Really dude 😒
Sorry

Hi first time in general 2
@proper spire
Hello?
OH MY GOD
some of the green helpfuls are fans of your YT channel
Simping.
Haha oh nice! I'm super glad folks enjoy it!
south you're the best ❤️
you are basically who got me into analytic NT
thank you for that
i absolutely adore your videos
(even though there are only 5)
5 extremely good ones?
haha well, there will be a sixth. It turns out that I should probably not have asked my husband to animate contracting a curve around a finite number of points.
oo
he may have spent more time animating that for the next video than it was actually worth haha
very cool
that's absolutely awesome to hear :D
when is it gonna come out
(if there is an estimate)
I don't have a good ETA, but I'll be happy when it does. It got delayed a bunch by things like us buying a house and him getting a job (and he is my editor/animator/etc)
but we hope to get on a more regular release schedule eventually. Since you're a fan, would you prefer more analytic number theory stuff, or would you prefer a broader range of topics
I was thinking about doing a detour into elliptic curves for instance
i think i wouldn't care as long as it's you
elliptic curves are really cool though
would you mind doing one on algebraic number theory?
specifically primes in the cyclotomic integers or smth
I just talked about them in my number theory/cryptography course today
The hardest part of doing that is that there is a lot of machinery there that regarding group theory and quotients and Grothendeik groups and all that is hard to compress.
I'm not at all saying I wouldn't though, it is all very cool stuff
i understand
hm
what do you think of a basic intro to smth like diff. geometry?
i recently got into it and i think it's an absolutely fascinating field
Diff Geometry vs Algebraic geometry and the ideas that go into proving the Weil conjectures is definitely something I enjoy talking about
I love algebra and geometry.
(I am an arithmetic geometer by trade. I learned some limited analytic number theory shortly before making the videos mostly because I was disappointed I didn't really know/understand it. I didn't really have a plan for what to do with it, and then Covid happened and I was making videos anyway, and it was like "sure, this is a fun project")
oh
I was around here a lot showing people clips and asking for feedback when I was doing the first iteration
I will say it is lovely to have queer representation in maths!
i was going to say that but i was too shy
who's that?
how have I never heard of you zetamath
sudoku guy
haha yes, there are thousands of hours of video fo me solving sudoku puzzles on my puzzle channel haha
https://www.youtube.com/@tommyocchipinti7683/videos Here are some (significantly less professional) lecture vides on a variety of topics from courses I've taught
https://www.youtube.com/zetamathdoespuzzles this is the puzzle channel btw, I'd love to have you in chat in streams if you want to hop by some time!
yooo cool puzzles, I've seen you on ctc
oh my god that'd be so cool
frankly i'm pretty mid at sudokus
but uh yeah that'd be fantastic
sorry to bother you btw but i really really love your videos
getting into puzzle stuff was definitely one of the coolest things that happened to me
@proper spire could i--just possibly--send you a friend request
i understand if you don't want me to ofc
uh
i'm guessing i tired you out with my hyperactivity
no worries
haha nah I had a student drop by office hours, feel free
i almost made a theory that actually had potential of becominng true but got unproven
Classic rookie mistake
yeah, it was what the single susbstance the universe was made of
ignore my spelling mistakes, i just type fast
Alright no problem 👍
Hi.. I want a math partner and I am in the second grade of high school.. Is there anyone to study with? Send a message in DM
What a coincidence, I am also in second grade of hs and I am also looking for someone to study with
hi i made a mandelbrot in desmos
What makes you think this is such groundbreaking news you need to spam it across at least 4 channels?
HOLY @proper spire
I was thinking about u like 2 weeks ago
Just like “wonder how they’re doing?”
I have no idea who zetamath is, but I like the PFP
mandelbreaking news
HI ZETA I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
hehe wow I am very flattered by how many folks here know my videos!
Oh I remember seeing your videos I think a few years ago on the zeta function
Very nice series
ive watched so many of those sudoku streams
and solved a bunch myself beforehand
when CTC isnt enough to scratch the itch...
oh hey! I see you're briefly back on this server!
i saw some of your videos a long time ago, i have not been on youtube in a long time but i remember liking them.
I check in from time to time!
I guess I'll just take the time to say that I really enjoyed your analytic continuation video
I hope you've been doing well ❤️
I was very happy with how that one came out.
for the most part!
hi south!
awesome! what was it on?
social constructionism
that's the boring answer, the real answer was that it was about TW: ||child sexual abuse|| and how the law, the media, and individuals are constantly trying to win over the public
how our understanding and our cultural baggage relating to this social problem has evolved over time
what if we are not humans, this is not a world, and u are not u?
principle of explosion my dudes
Do you mean like how instead of trying to teach you stuff the media just wants your attention nowadays
yeah I talked about sensationalism
how of course this social problem is very tangible and real
The italian place is playing Nirvana
what does child sexual abuse mean?
but how the media weaponises our fears
ok
'stranger danger' for example
ic
most victims are harmed by someone they know
so glad there's a solid body of research that's trying to investigate all this for us
depressing topic I know
Like I know the problem is real but it's over exaggerated
morning
interesting
Disgusting I know
We gotta be glad that FBI police CIA and more exist so they can stop those guys
What does the CIA do again
I forgot
i think spy on people?

Thanks
urw
Yeah this world is pretty messed up
That's personally why I wanna be a cop
ok thats actually a BIG W
Trainings gonna be hard but it's gonna be worth it
supposed to deal with foreign political affairs and deal with any threats of that variety, but don't ask what they did during the 1980s Nicaraguan civil war
spoiler alert: i was trolling, ik what this means and its disgusting as fuck
Glad you share the sentiment at least
If I don't get to be a cop I'll be a teacher instead

indulge me
It was me playing terribly
Can I send it to you
music?
No it's a clip of csgo
well yes
(it's not a good clip)
i hate that
cause someone campaigned
our state actually changed the wording of the law from “maintaining na unlawful relationship” to “sexual abuse of a child”

nice
hmmmmm
Hello, I am looking for a professor for a couse of large scale optimization, is there someone who can help me?
if you don't mind paying Brilliant has a nice ML course
stranger danger is... quite prevalent in the minds of my parents too
Hi speedy
unfortunate
yeah it's a very 80s thing
it's ironic that violent crime rates have fallen by quite a lot compared to the 80s
yet children are more sheltered from the outside world than ever
there are parents who believe in nature school and getting their kids covered in mud
whats wrong with this image
well violent crimes in general
not specifically against children
but it is not so advanced I think
Children 🙏 commit 🙏 the 🙏 violent 🙏 crimes
Which country bro
US
Wow hurray, let's celebrate that we're not yet back at the great depression era
I mean I wasn't celebrating but ight
Wonder why it was high during the 1980s tho
That's not the great depression
I'm dumb
Gonna go to bed now
why does the graph skyrocket after the civil rights bill 1964? i know correlelation dne causation, but why

fun fact: every single misleading comment with a few thousand likes under a pop science video talking about a confusing concept? that's me
every single one of those comments, i wrote them for fun
we already know collatz is true, we just need to prove it
you can build H as long as you don't feed H into itself
a half-half-chance of a 50% decrease or an 80% increase? 0.5*1.8=0.9 that's losing money on average
This might be an understatement
Some people just want to watch the word "Burn"
Burn
should i quit school and become a professional failure who sits in front of her computer all day cause i'm failing all my classes and my homeschool implemented a bright idea this year to not accept any work outside of the 3 week period it was assigned in and now i couldn't care less about any of it
like its only halfway through the semester but i don't have the energy to want to pass my classes
at the same time, it'll be humiliating as fuck if i had to repeat the grade because i'd lose any advantage i once had over my peers
like i'd genuinely be happier selling my soul and existence to someone than trying to understand granular division or whatever it is
not granular division ummm. Synthetic division. sorry I think about granular synths a lot lately even though i'm awful at making music and generally just awful at everything i don't know why i am here because i really don't like math and i don't like school in general i probably needed help but i haven't paid attention in that class for the past 4 weeks so its kind of pointless trying to catch up now
Relatable
No, you shouldn't.
Tho if I wanted to sell my soul I'd probably have to pay for someone to agree to take it
Ask for help.
I can't it's kind of too late to do that hold on
let me log into my school portal for the first time in. a month?
ok yeah it's too late
You need to communicate with your course instructor about the problems you are having.
Have some kindness for yourself
You can only improve if you learn to ask for help
Importantly, is this high school or uni?
High school, 11th grade
Look at your graduation requirements
If you hate maths that much then you need to figure out your next steps
How much more maths do you need just to graduate and do the bare minimum
I think this course is the bare minimum but judging by past mathematical endeavors I will have to repeat it (I had to repeat algebra like 3 times and i still don't remember any of it)
and I don't have enough credits to graduate (I need 220) i have like 105 right now and i might have 145 at the end of this grade if i pass every class besides art
i am passing like 3 classes in actual grading terms but barely. for some reason i have like a 52% in one class but its still a c? anyway if it was using the normal grading scale i would be failing every class except math which is ironic cause math is the one im the worst at but i use chatgpt for a bunch of stuff in the class cause i can never wrap my head around it
My dad said im probably n.otgoign to finish high school so what do i do how am i going to live at all how am i gonna find someone who wants to be around someone like me i don't want to be homeless i dont want to die but like always i can never even be honest with anyone i always lie to everyone even here because i do want to die im just a coward sorry imjst upstt my dad thinks that even though he's probably right
If it really doesn't work out just take the GED
im not old enough to take it
I mean you can if you happen to not graduate
i will be next year but everyone in my family will be disappointed in me if i do
it'll be easier if i get in some freak accident that forces me to quit
There's that saying about making a fish climb up a tree you know
I'm not a fish im a butterfly that got covered in water
is ur name a reference to tony danza
anybody love mat?
Unfortunately, Mat has a partner

how to learn math quickly in a foreign language?
depends on how acquianted are you with said foreign language already, I don't think it's gonna be quick if you don't already know it at a basic conversational level
reading papers in the language helps
I know basic parts of the language but not the mathematical part, like names and words for things, etc. And I generally have a hard time understanding math even in my mother language
Is it normal to have no idea where to start with a question?
Yes. The more it is a research question, the more true it is.
My head is larger than the average Australian head. Literally no One-size-fits-all hat fits me here. The struggles of big brain
But seriously it's annoying finding hats that look really cool but they don't fit.
Aussie represent
Make larger hats please
I wanna see one so badly
I saw a possum yesterday and it was so cool
And scary because they are fast af
Where in Aus are you? It's really not hard to find them in most places.
I am in Canberra, but I don't have a car. I've seen a few roadkill, so I am just waiting to eventually see one live.
Canberra is like ideal for seeing them, e.g. bottom of mt ainslie, near war memorial etc. Lots of bushland not far from town centre where you can see them.
Ah that's close enough to give it a shot. I was suggested Tidbinbilla but that was too far for me (for now).
thats so cute
Tidbinbilla is nice but yeah no need to go that far if it is just about seeing kangaroos.
Have you seen Platypuses?
Just took that photo half an hour ago
I think it's here every night so tomorrow I am gonna bring my good camera.

Probably just in a zoo or something, I don't recall actually coming across them.
I think squirrels/chipmunks are much cuter than possums, probably a matter of which you grew up seeing lots of.
My "this" is for the second part of your sentence. I grew up seeing lots of squirrels so they are meh to me. And in the cuteness scale of Australian animals, I think the wombat is on top.
Sad the invasive bunnies are outcompeting them.
congrats!
wombats are pretty cute yeah. also I love how dopey koalas look. they are just stoner bears in trees.
ahhh fck I didn't process what you were saying because I was thinking about animals. This is 99% a scam.
Edit: this comment is in response to a deleted message above.
<@&268886789983436800> I am pretty sure this guy is a scammer.
1 % chance
they are not

Yeah their message history was just that shit a few times, thanks
well they weren't explicitly trying to sell anything (yet)
so atm just a spammer
still bad
It's really his first post that screams scam. Say they made X amount of money very fast and very easy ( in this case online ). Then they mention that it was an expert that helped them make it (this gives me a hint of MLM, but could also be a "you need to make an initial investment scam"). But really it's a "friend in this server" the final nail since it's their first post it just means they're copy pasting it from server to server.
lol nah I just skimmed his post cause I was thinking about the animal conversation.
should i uhh gamble for my grades
is there a set of symbols/names that dont have preffered ordering attached
like numbers or letters have the normal ordering
not set in like a rigorous sense
like assume you have 4 things that you want to name
you can name the alice bob charlie david
but that gives a ordering a b c d
i can name the north south west east
but what if it were 5
it doesn't though
i want to name the that dont have privledge to one
just because you have 4 names doesn't imply it makes sense to order them
or to use a specific order
to normal human it might do
if i had quadruplets
and named them a b c d
people would assume a was born first(last"
"some people"
well then you can pick any set and use alphabet to refer to it's elements and that would be your "order"
Yeah, I think g24 is asking for a naming convention that wouldn't implicitly order the objects
something like that
well not unless that alphabet choice is immedeatly seen
you wouldnt order n e w s
not unless you have some reason to do so
keep in mind im talking about humans in general choosing that order
You can do colors, maybe
like in daily life
that's all subjective and personal preference
ah right
There isn't an implicit ordering between colors, although they carry other associations
thats a good one
yeah thats fine
yes but i am talking about humans in general so a rule that works for majority is fine
like conventional beauty
subjective, but for the general public it can be objectified
even the colors can be ordered depending on what colors used and which country you're in
true, like the rainbow
This should be opposite?
Which inequality would you reverse?
these two ig?
The first inequality is not true
what about the second
The second inequality is true
why is the first false
Try it for n=3
1/4<1/4!+1/5!+... It holds
notice that the middle sum is e - \sum_{k=1}^{n} 1/k!
$e = \sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{1}{k!}$
Acman
so i used this allo, except you want to start at k=0 not k=1
ah yea i messed up the index
How did you guys notice that it's wrong so quick without calculating
This is a well-known series and estimates that involve it show up very often in exercises.
So a lot of us have seen various inequalities of this type before.
In particular it's a known (and important) fact that the tails of the series shrink very quickly, so it's immediately unlikely that they'd be larger than 1/(n+1)
It should be $$\frac{1}{n+1}<\sum_{k=n+1}^{\infty}\frac{n!}{k!}<\frac{1}{n}$$
KStar
That does seem more likely.
(I know because I wrote it lmao I made a typo)

the exponential function’s series is simply too good
It is quite nice
Calculus really hard? I’m on precal rn lol
hello everyone
Im Panth, I need help with trignometry
any tips to start better?
what does sigma mean in mathematics?
what grade are you?
khan academy is a good place to start if you have not checked it out already
A sigma is a greek letter that has applications in math. The sigma summation is the collective values of a sequence or set of numbers.
within a paremeter
so the sum of n=0 to 5 if the parameter is set to just (x) were adding the integers, 1+2+3+4+5 = 15
it has wide application and can be used to approximate large sets and even the areas under curves
in the case of this gif you can see the upper and lower bounds of the sum (meaning the range of numbers inputted into the parameter) . In this case it would not be considered a expression anymore but a equation, so its a fancy way of saying: y=6x. Try graphing it on desmos, helps understand whats going on.
There a Korean channel but no español channel :((
can some1 help me with sparx
What the sigma!
que triste
Wut?
Is there a Korean channel on this server?
yes
Which one?
I know
Oh I have those muted lol
But that’s just a dude that came in
If someone typed Spanish and someone responded in Spanish same thing would happen
I would learn North Korea, Korean idk how to tho
north korean suprisingly similar to standard korean
in the south
Less fun lol
literally 💀
you mean the help channel that's been there since forever lol
Idk what that channel is but I’ll call it the Korean channel
thing is, the #rules specifically say you can talk in other languages in the help channels only
so yeah
Ok
Find any absolute maximum or minimum of 2x^3 − 9x^2 + 12x on the interval (−1, ∞).
Is there any absolute max or min?
To hard
Will asking a teacher why he teaches a certain way offend him?
I'm trying to understand how he rationalizes the choices he makes when teaching. I find that the exercises tend to be so hard even he is incapable of solving them easily. Also he has no standard textbook and doesn't provide notes. I find his choices too odd.
Chat why can I divide by 0 and not get a math error 😭
Is it just laziness or does he actually think a certain way about this?
Yes, no or maybe. Serveral factors such if you forward it like you are unsatisfied vs curious and if they are able to take criticism or not.
Just something i've wondering: Why do most teachers behave like children? I mean, is behaving like you never grew up standard everywhere or just academia?
I guess that’s your campus then. Mine are professional and even gives feedback same day
This is an honest question, it's been bothering me since i started my degree. Do people in academia tend to have more fragile egos or something?
Maybe that's an unreasonable generalization though
I have to say that this isn't my experience and I'm sorry you've had to deal with immature people
That’s not just academia, just wait till you meet the real world
Than?
Industry i guess
academia politics are famously incredibly petty
but besides that i wouldnt say people are any more egotistical than in industry, in my experience
same
thanks
Might wanna start with putting it into vertex form 😉
Ironic for someone who has "math is easy" in their username
I miss her a lot, it hurts guys 😞
I'm happy it happened, but damn it hurts too
Pray for me yall
yes if this is a professor it will offend him heavily
if u mean like high school teacher then no
why do proffessor's get so offended?
Offended by what, may I ask?
Hello
Asking why he teaches in a certain way?
I think it depends on the professor your relationship with them and what the way they teach is tbh.. but I don’t actually know
Anything
It's definitely a loaded question. So I wouldn't be surprised if the receiver got offended.
omg this is the only time i’ve seen anyone use a script font in a serious publication
What’s the best website to use to find practice questions for math?
Doubt theres. Universal one for all types
would be hella sick if there was one though
we should get on that
make a website and have it contain a series of problems for every subject ordered by difficulty, like a leet code for mathematics. then we could also it detail relevant research projects in that particular field that you can look at and label them like extreme difficulty
this is such a good idea, we once we have some free time we should do this guys
Nice
Is it good it seems intersting
go figure (that is, i read the first three pages and then got distracted so i dunno)
Lol
I spent nearly 2 hours trying to solve a math problem
And I still don’t understand it
I feel like an idiot
So I want to do something about it
What’s the best way to learn how to solve a problem I’m struggling with?
My current plan is this:
attempt 1: do the problem from memory of studies and notes
Attempt 2: do the problem with the help of my notes
Attempt 3: use resources from professor (YouTube links) and online sources like this server
If I can’t do it after 3 attempts I’ll move on and get help from a tutor or until someone online responds
Any changes to my strategy or ideas on how I should approach problems I’m stuck on?
I think its good to be conscious if you're making any real progress on the problem or if you're necessarily stuck
then evaluate why are you stuck
is it lack of knowledge or creativity/skill
if it is lack of knowledge then reading notes and things online helps, but if its skill and you're sure you won't make further progress its better to not exhaust yourself trying to get something out of nothing, the time may be better spend reading the solution and thinking "how could I have come up with this myself?"
I see
Is a math degree more beneficial if i want to study tcs or should the difference between math and cs degrees be negligible?
wdym getting a degree in math wanting to study cs
I mean, I'm biased, I'll say math is the hard part lmao
on anecdotal evidence
I'm interested in complexity theory and type theory
I won't give you advice because it always turns out bad in the end
but I do think the transition from computer science concepts to rigorous proof based math is harder than the converse
Probably depends on your uni, but in general I'd say cs.
At least in my ug institution only the cs folks touched those topics.
As for the necessary mathematical classes, they were usually cross-listed cs/applied math/math
That's fair, it works that way here as well. But at the end of the day why does it matter? Connections?
Yeah, the degrees where i live are quite inflexible so i don't really have much of a choice on the classes i take.
I'm mostly thinking about the mandatory classes.
Yeah
The problem is that our majors are not thought out with wiggle room to allow for multiple interests, so they are quite inflexible and are making my life harder that is necessary
Because i feel a math degree would benefit me more for the cs topics i'm interested in. But maybe that doesn't matter after you're doing the phd?
An issue may be that if you are doing theoretical computer science, you probably want a decent core math background (logic, analysis/probability, algebra, topology etc.) that may not count for CS. But the actual courses most immediately useful for research (complexity, algorithms, optimization, coding theory, crypto, info theory etc.) may not count for the math degree.
Reasonable people can also disagree on the extent to which "everything is downstream for math" and that if you know enough "real math," then you can trivially pickup anything you would use for TCS
That's exactly the problem. There is also the networking problem as well. My class started with 2 students, so the math major is also pretty small
Well, that's largely true for tcs though
Yup most of those math classes you mentioned were taken by CS people at my uni. But in this case, they were actually mandatory and thus counted towards their degrees.
networking like router/switch or you mean like socially
Another thing you might be able to do is audit classes.
Also, a cs major has more potential industry opportunities if i end up being a mediocre student and can't get into a phd
I mean talking to professors about your interests mostly, but there is also the problem that there is a very limited number of students to talk to and very few of the hard working ones are interested in the same things i'm
In one of my grad institutions we had a CS student auditing the algebra grad sequence with us
Lol the cs people at your uni did topology?
Anyways since this seems like a life defining decision for you I have to say the mandatory "but idk" in case it ruins your life
Yep
I'm just thinking about it, good to get some input
Even if it's probably not gonna impact my decision very much
I would dare say none is
Since there are like 9, 10 of them i know about
Also, since we are here already, there is the problem that i'm not that great st math and even though i study hard i largely get mediocre grades. So that may impact my chances of a phd
any advice for memorizing/understanding how formulas work and how to apply them to problems? i know practice works but i feel like the way i'm going about it is kinda like bashing my head into a brick wall in the hopes i can go through it
should i drop my calc 3 class if im more than halfway through the semester with a 40% 💀
Wait what, like this?
$\frac{10}{2x}=2$
〔 𝕊 𝕖 𝕣 𝕘 𝕚 𝕠 〕
That's just simple equation lol
There are even multiple ways to solve this just in the head lol
Like 10÷2x = 10÷2×x and since both division and multiplication have same priority, you must do ÷ first and then ×
Lol
this is why nobody uses that shitty division symbol
Yeah
wrong, PEMDAS the M comes before D
But in BODMAS D is before M
BODYMASS
Just write equations like sane people lmao, use this and there won't be any problems
Wait what if that was 1(0 ÷ 2)x = 2
So x = 2
what?
If we take 0 as X, then 10 is 1X, so 1×X

Regarding software engineering if I learn up to calculus and elementary linear algebra would that suffice?
Sorry if I spammed the same topic from another channel since it was drowned out
BLOE
hiiiiiiiiiiii hihihi
depends on what software you are engineering
honestly you dont even need calculus for basic fullstack development
linear algebra is important tho
actually now that i think about it, you need calculus for visuals
that is a good start. and at that point you will just know what you need to learn when you come across challenges in your swe journey
at least that's how i see it
How much Commutative Algebra does one need to know to cover Hartshorne
Like really able to do the problems
people in discussion 1 talking about the elections, so decided to come here
hello. do you like mathematics
try asking in #book-recommendations , i have never tried to read hartshorne but people tell me that you should do some commutative algebra, and others tell me that you only need whatever’s in aluffi or dummit&foote
and then pick it up as you go
no.
let’s unpack this trauma. i’ll give you a series of unrelated letters and you tell me what it reminds you of.

yeah i do, i love geomtry and statistcs so much
nice, i love geometry.
yeah, its pretty fun
statistics is cool too, i don’t really have as much experience in it.
but dont expect much; im still grade 10
that’s okay, we are all somewhere.
yeah ur right
so whats ur fav thing about geometry?
You better go to #advanced-lounge
Or
In math class preparing for my final with everyone right now
Even now that image of an impossibly high wall surrounded by fire and the thoughts that im dumb and I’m fated to always fail are dancing around in my head
That hasn’t changed
What has changed it that I’m trying to go forward in spite of it
to be honest i just like how creative geometers are
i like how geometers define certain things in a way that would make you feel uneasy at first, but then it turns out that that's the most natural way it could be.
thats a very cool insight!
what would be an example of this
Is this good or bad?
Another question
Spent 3 hours at college and struggling on one question the entire time
Don’t feel stupid like I did yesterday since the opportunity made me even more understanding about how my process is when it comes to math
Should i let myself rest and get a good nights sleep tonight since i technically did learn something or should i keep studying
(Note: it’s 7:03 pm) where I am rn
I used to experience panic attacks during every math exam I took. Because of these, I’d fail no matter what, and that would lead to me having yet another attack on the next exam
I’ve been shot at, I’ve gone through a potentially life-ending health scare, I’ve been in a number of car crashes, and I have been mugged a number of times just given my area. Lower division college math is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life and it is not close
But at some point, you just wake up and realize that you’re a man, and part of this life is to challenge yourself
And you actually start to like it. It doesn’t have to be mathematics but it sounds like it is for you. Just knowing that you can conquer something that once gave you so much trouble will make you so confident about life
Sorry for the yappage though just something I am passionate about
You should change your username to immortal
So everyone is saying that bicycles get stolen super frequently here, so I bought a really good U-lock, and then when i went to buy my bicycle I got a second-hand one for very cheap. My lock literally costs half of what my bike costs, so imma be more sad if they break my lock to get the bicycle than if they steal the bicycle only.
Hopefully the thieves won't want to go through the hassle of breaking the lock for a very cheap mtb
make sure to lock the wheels if they're quick release
thanks! that's what the seller told me, because yes they are.
at least the front one, he said it's a bit harder to get the back one
How to understand that the symmetry of A (from being positive definite) ensures the symmetry of adj(A)?
A = A^T
take adj of both sides
adj(A) = adj(A^T) = adj(A)^T
QED
if you dont see why adj(A^T) = adj(A)^T, try working that out yourself
Is this a serious take on helping—from a moderator—or
?
The question itself is about why adj(A^T) = adj(A)^T, right?
It feels like just restating what was posed in the question
i mean, this isnt a help channel; if they cant prove this themselves then they should open one
but also this is basically immediate from the definition
the question is to prove that adj(A) = adj(A)^T
my argument shows that this is equivalent to adj(A^T) = adj(A)^T
this is often the very first thing proven about adjoints
but if they havent proved it yet then they should try it themselves

How do i develop math reasoning
By try to understand the why and how and so on
You don't just follow the methods blindly
Have fun
If you like what you are doing you are gonna be interested and if you are interested you are gonna ask questions like how and why
What a preposterous idea.
I've had fun once; it was awful.
(this was of course a joke, ideally you should be doing stuff you enjoy)
The world isnt made rules its made of tools we use to do stuff and learning why those tools exist what they do and how they do it will eventually enable you to know when and how to modify and apply them creatively
But you have to be interested to get that far
And you wont be interested if you arent curious and having fun
that definitely aligns with how I think of math. By analogy with art, I kind of think of those rules kind of playing the role of the concrete objects like a brush, canvas, charcoal, paint, etc. Then because of, or maybe even despite these constraints, creativity emerges in how you combine and use them
Many rules are made because they simply exist and are there since the dawn of the universe I think they are called axioms...but again I think rules are made bcoz humans are predictably unpredictable...u don't know what they can do next so inorderto maintain discipline and save humanity just create rules...
Yep, I’m starting to start to become “in love with the process”
https://youtu.be/q41i0wpX4qc?si=wjN23Kx1Y22a9uDF I got the idea from this video

Ehhh, I have probably a stupid question but anyways. I'm rereading lecture 1 notes (logic) and have some troubles in understanding your proof of the unique formula reconstruction. I think I understood pretty much everything before "phi_1 and psi_1 cannot be prefixes of one another". I understand that you've meant proper prefixes and that psi_1 can't be proper prefix of phi_1 by inductive hypothesis. But why phi_1 can't be proper prefix of psi_1?

so how are u meant to pronounce tietze
I just realized I actually resent my hs friends for introducing me to League of Legends.
what do you plan on doing now that you acknowledge your feelings about the situation
1- Actually committing not to ever play it again (it's been almost 1 year since my last relapse). 2- Tell them "%&@# you for introducing me to LoL"
It seems like a good plan to me.
why do they deserve that?
You are right. They don't
They probably didn't know how addictive it was either.
maybe they're addicted too and would like to stop too, might even be able to figure out other stuff to do together instead
good luck!
Thanks!
Hi chat
Two, actually
[ t EE tz ee ]
Maybe you were thinking of Jacques Tits?
Annoyingly, Tits's Wikipedia page has the IPA, but none of the Tietzes' do.
(but also Tietze is a German surname, and they don't have much in way of weird pronunciation niggles, you know the pronunciation based on the spelling)
Good evening
I (mentally) pronounced it as Tiësto. I don't think I ever actually said it out loud.
Like not literally Tiësto, but like the first part in it: Tië-tze
Reminds me of when my classmates looked at me strangely for calling $\varphi$ literally "varphi".
きよし
When I was a student, my analysis professor pronounced the name "Stokes" as if he was German.
And Maclaurin as if he was French
And Stieltjes as if I have no idea (and also I've only recently looked up how "Stieltjes" should be pronounced)
Lemme check google translate to see how it sounds in those accents
I guess no one I've known has ever pronounced Stieltjes correctly in front of me
(or if they have I wasn't paying attention
)
i always thought it was steel chess
when huygens is transliterated into hangul most modern sources (like post 2010) will read ha wee huns or smth like that

huygens is so close to being an anagram of nguyen I thought it was vietnamese at first
Good afternoon here lol
how's it going?
are you in Japan?
all is going well grading a few exams still. No I am not in Japan.
Good luck with the exams
How do I effectively memorize the math material that I study?
dont memorize, understand
Unless you got a photographic memory, memorising won’t work, split the equation into parts untill you understand each part from term to term to sum
can anyone check my ticket im kinda cooked
!noadvertising

if you memorize, it would be harder to apply into problems that need more thought and understanding than what you may have just memorized if that makes sense
Its a difference between just i guess memorizing and actually trying to understand and apply into higher levels of problems
Ok chat let's see if I've done goofed my math test

Ok, this is not purely mahematical. But I wanted to know how would mathematicians build this graph. You have (-1,0) as the worst person and (1,0) as the best person about all aspects, making the point of origin the most average person that could there be. But imagine a person that is the absolute bare minimum of everything. Like he gets to be the bare minimum of a genius and the bare minimum of stupid. Or in this case he was the bare minimum of stupid and then became so smart he’s technically a genius. How would this graph look like? Would there be a y or z axis to quantify this person?
Just wanted to know if this problem is allowed here.
What
Damn
Sir, this is not a eugenics discord
:(
crazy thats a sticker in the bio cord 😭
I think to visualize you can start at (-1,0) by looking in the mirror
Dude you don’t have to cook what’s already burnt

Looking at what some British students take in their equivalent senior year of high school is really demoralizing as a second year undergrad lol
all you can do is look at what's in front of you really
Oh totally
Its really meaningless, not a race
But it does make me question which education system is better yk?
I'm doubting they go as in depth in a lot of the topics as university courses go cuz a lot of those higher level exams seem computation heavy as standardized tests. But still i think a lot of that stuff could reasonably be taught to high school students if we didn't have the specific course markers here
And of course not every British student are taking those courses, but the equivalent in the US seems a lot more obtuse cuz we'd have to go to community colleges and whatnot on top of other high school classes to get a similar education
6th form is basically their equivalent of community college
google fuzzy set theory
Only 2% of UK students who take A levels take further maths
So that's like 1% of all students in that age group
Also the syllabus is full of gaps: no limit definition of derivative and students learn to integrate rational functions and do partial fraction decomposition before they know how to sketch them
More testing doesn't mean more learning
The good thing is that multiple choice is just not a thing in maths
It's all short answer
Or furry Cat theory.
I see so ig there are trade offs
Yes
Also most people only do 3 or 4 A levels
They're spending more time on maths than US students if they choose it
hi i made something in desmos where can i upload a video of it?

Suddenly I've started to have so many meetings. And I feel like 3 kids in a trenchcoat faking it
