solid snow

that seems like something that could and should (?) be reported

azure sleet
solid snow
#

this sounds like there’s something else going on behind the scenes

limber thunder
#

in my experience that kinda attitude persists unless like, a big chunk of the class calls them out and ostracizes them for it

azure sleet
#

I eventually got to learn that sometimes people who are very close to us can be our enemies.

limber thunder
#

never had this issue in ugrad but my physics bros did with one particular dude who was kind of a tryhard and routinely copied HWs

#

same person was also under investigation for harassment and other crap within the dept

#

eventually not much happened sadly

solid snow
#

oh god

limber thunder
#

uni bureaucracies have little incentive to care

#

and quite on the contrary they usually do have incentives to just pass stsudents and keep them paying tuition

so in the end it's best to be aware that this kinda stuff happens, don't lend HWs to anyone, generally trust no one lol

Yeah, in the end, I also got to set my boundaries with these people.

limber thunder

but honestly some people will do anything to get further away

like my friends had this personal discord server where we hung out and sometimes they worked on uni stuff on stream, naturally some not-so-close people joined in on a one-off basis too

on one occasion one of these people accidentally played a recording of a convo in VC through speakers and the mic picked it up

on another occasion, another person copied some HW problems through stream while my friends were working on them

#

some people lol

azure sleet
#

If I couldn't keep up, I would rather just drop the course and do it next year.

#

I hope this was not a bad move.

#

I have dropped most courses I took in the peak COVID season.

#

I studied abroad in Taiwan, where there were no indigenous cases for like a year since spring 2020.

#

Since COVID invariants hit, we ended up having online classes for a semester until vaccines came out in that country.

#

Thank goodness, they eventually gave up their study in the second semester in our junior year.

limber thunder

calculus is (in a vague sense) about the geometrical properties of functions, particularly those that can be quantified by some kind of limiting process: is the function increasing/decreasing at some point (derivatives), what's the cumulative area under a function's graph (integrals) etc.

spare gale
#

ig this is what happens when i make games during classwut

limber thunder
#

but the key thing is the use of limits to define derivatives or the Riemann integral, and that's kind of the common theme you'll see along calculus

On lined paper, how do you guys write math when dealing with rational numbers?

vivid halo
#

Uhh I would write it normally if I were using lined paper for some reason

potent cobalt
#

Like a/b or a on top of b

vivid halo
#

Either is fine

#

a on top of b you just have to write a bit smaller

#

For some things this is fine for some things it’s annoying

potent cobalt
vivid halo
#

Sure so write a/b then if it’s too small

potent cobalt
vivid halo
#

You can write this in ways that make it clearer

#

Like you can write a higher up than b even in an inline fraction like this

#

If you have an inline expression involving lots of parentheses and also slashes then yeah sometimes this is hard to read

#

Sometimes I will make the slashes extra bold

potent cobalt
#

Straight up I think best case is just downsizing tf out of your handwriting n doing a on top of b

#

My issue just stems from poor handwriting I feel

vivid halo

Yeah this is what I generally prefer

You may also consider just not using lined paper

Then the issue goes away

I think if you practice writing on blank paper your writing will straighten out

Looking to get into calculus on Khan Academy from algebra 2/trig ASAP (albeit my basis in algebra is a bit weak now), would you guys recommend I start with the "Get Ready for Precalculus" course and then move onto AP Calculus AB/BC?

if you're not taking the class in a school bc is just ab with more content and the only reason they're separated as separate classes with bc having all of ab but more as college board intends it to be calc 1 and calc 2 but if you're self studying this is completely irrelevant to you, and yes this is confusing

When do you decide when self learning math, you've reached the required skill level to move on?

warm torrent
#

I don't move on until I've completed a lab or project that uses the method or formula. I encountered a similar issue previously. During my calculus course, the concepts were not clear to me until I engaged in a construction role focused on low-voltage systems. I am now capable of calculating the necessary conduit volume (using washer method for finding the volume of a solid of revolution) to accommodate 40 cables per floor across four floors, given that each cable has a diameter of 5.8 mm. Additionally, I can determine the total amount of cable required for procurement. This calculation is predicated on the configuration of two Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs) per floor, with half of the total cables from each floor directed to IDF A and half to IDF B. The distribution of cable lines is as follows: three lines for studios, four lines for one-bedroom units, six lines for two-bedroom units, and eight lines for three-bedroom units, within a building that contains 160 rooms. The room ratios per wing (representing half a floor) are structured as 4:3:2:1 for studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units, respectively. It's about a six month project to complete 4 buildings with 3 people.

Here's the blog: https://maths-metropolis-walker.blogspot.com/?m=1

I need some reviews about the contents. Are they really understandable? Any question are always welcome.

If they are of any help you may want to follow my blog by clicking the "Follow" button . You know if people follow my blog I will really get a green signal to continue what I'm doing. It acts a great source of motivation! Without any followers or support, I am loosing motivations and having doubts about whether my blog is of any help to others not. If it's not of any help, I'll consider shutting it down.

#

i very much recommend øystein ore's biography of cardano

he talks a little but not a lot about complex numbers, just like negative numbers they have probably been around in calculations for a long time but they would not be like something you used in public, as their ontological status was seen as dubious (and they placed a lot of emphasis of this strict correspondence between mathematical and physical entities)

Which is interesting, because I feel the ontology issue entirely goes away once you interpret complex numbers as points on the plane.

They admittedly don't make much intuitive sense as "quantities", the geometric perspective is much more helpful

i guess u could look at parity

main elbow

ive reduced the possible solutions to either the zs must be 3, 6, 9 or are each different mod 3

static loom

I think we can do it by adding all the equations together, best case scenario has the smallest 6 numbers paired to make the 3 largest numbers but 6*7/2 > 7+8+9

#

pretend that makes sense, proofed 😌

main elbow
#

yep aha nice

#

wait

#

its not true...

but some minor modification is probably good

#

we can say we must have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 among the xs and ys

#

ok no theres an even easier way aha

#

1 + .. + 9 = 45 is not divisible by two, thats all you need

static loom
#

inequalities basically live in a different world than modular arithmetic

#

oh I think I misunderstood what you were saying

#

we could take each equation, write them as x+y-z=0 and then add them all up mod 2 and we get 1=0 mod 2 since there are 5 odd numbers.

#

if it wasn't what you meant I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt anyways catshrug

main elbow

a + b + c + d + e + f = h + i + j

If I want to be an "expert" in analysis and algebra, the Math Major is my best option?
I am also interested in cool engineering things, like electronic circuits or programming. But I feel the need of study both subjects in depth.

#

I live in Mexico, so, the concept of Major and minor in the Universities doesn´t exist. You choose a whole grade of 4-6 years and that's it, you can't combine subjects between grades.

#

Well, there are optative subjects that are "far" from the main grade. For example, in the study plans of Mathematics grade there are often 2 or 3 Physic's grade optative subjects, like classical mechanics or electromagnetism. But that is so far away like the flexibility that the universities in US offer.

#

I know that the Engineering grades have Calculus and Linear Algebra subjects in the curricula, but in my experience on a Engineering grade in Mexico, both ones aren't treat with deep, just mechanizing the formulas of Calculus and the Matrix Operations, but don't seeing so much of cool theory.
