I think I found people use Lean more than Sage

yeah, but within the department

burnt ledge
#

@frank orchid Was the person inviting evaluations or just wanted to post themselves looking nice

#

bcs if the latter it could generally be seen as rude or at least uncomfortable to be rating them anything at all

#

if they were inviting people to evaluate (eg "how do i look") it can get a lot more complicated because this could be all sorts of situations

#

but even then the scale 0-10 i strongly believe is not centred on 5

instead i think its centred sloghtly higher, around 6 or 7

thats a weird one tho idk how wellknown this is

#

ive decided i can sleep when im dead

robust brook

i used to study 4 hours a day, couldn't study for a week straight

vague hare
#

the point is i'm studying so hard and still getting fucked by my exams

vague hare
#

like wtf

robust brook
#

it's exciting to study for a good grade for the first five days

#

it's not fun after that

vague hare
#

i was really proud of myself for making an effort but how can u be proud of Fs

main elbow
# vague hare if you don't sleep yes

you should consider cutting back on the quantity of your studying and increase the quality
also sacrificing your sleep is one of the worst thing you can do, in that its only going to make it harder to study effectively. poor sleep is a total handicap

idk what else to do šŸ˜ž

Well i mean 4 hours is a bit arbritary but yeah, no one just has unlimited brain power, you will get tired

acman is that per day or in one go

I think there's two things that I found made me more efficient 1) PHONES ARE A DISTRACTION, REMOVE REMOVE REMOVE! 2) Have a plan BEFORE you start studying that way time isn't wasted in the studying time fumbling about.

robust brook

i think it's best to just move to the traditional pen & paper

robust brook

whiteboard apps are surely more fun tho 😁

its never something essential like that, nobody really "just is" a weirdo in the same way that nobody "just is" stupid. it takes careful reflection but also practice and time, so better not to give up even in your words

robust brook
#

i love technology

digital galleon
#

ok, well it seems to me you have a plan, and these exams appear to be the first step. Can you see the importance of studying for them??

main elbow
robust brook
#

yeah of course, i think the main thing that's holding me back is stuff that i hate learning

#

when i started my self study journey, i intentionally skipped geometry

#

now i'm forced to study it 😁

digital galleon

Why would you set off on a quest filled with learning if you hate it? More importantly, why do you hate learning?

robust brook

i never liked geometry for some reason

raven plaza

sonic sentinel
#

i feel like the idea that i could always be using my time better has fucked me up really bad

#

first encountered it in "eat that frog" (never read the whole book just skimmed through it), i think reading 80000 hours guide also worsened it (it has a lot of useful ideas about effeciency),

#

but i also noticed the trend of these thoughts occuring before i read 80k hours so maybe it just exacerbated a problem that was already there?

#

i literally made like a "value/time" spreadsheet for every productive task i have

#

but i still literally have to remind myself mentally "there is no way there is a more productive task you can do right now the spreadsheet says so just do it"

#

and of course a value/time spreadsheet doesn't solve everything because you still have issues like: will the effort i put into this task make me too burned out to do other tasks? how much time will i end up spending doing productive stuff?

#

which practically shouldn't matter (or you could just use your intuition)

#

but i feel like it does because "if i am not spending my time doing the 100% best thing i could be doing right now my life will definitely go to shit or something"

#

and even at non-productive time its always like "would i have more fun doing something else"

#

this is a huge issue i noticed like 15m ago so if you're thinking "that seems like a very huge issue that i probably would not have described in the discussion-2 channel of the math discord server" your opinion is REASONABLE

static loom
#

I didn't read everything you put but personally I would try to figure out a way to give up on that stuff, drop worrying about squeezing efficiency out of your time, seems to be sucking the fun out of it

storm sage
#

usually I just have a list of stuff I could do and then do one thing on it (whichever I want)

#

and then additionally you should probably dedicate some (lots of?) time to doing stuff that's not on the list, if you're someone that feels like they need to be productive all the time

cinder zephyr
#

ok I started time tracking recently

#

so I can understand where you're coming from

#

but here's what really you need to keep in mind

#

1: you as a human being cannot be working 24/7

#

every waking hour

#

if your rational is that you wouldn't be productive, then consider that since you won't feel rested the time you do spend working is less productive if you aren't feeling your best

#

I wouldn't focus on valuing certain tasks over another, that seems obcessive and destructive

#

instead, focus on giving everything 100%

#

and here's the trick

#

everything means everything, including relaxing and sleeping and spending time with friends and family and other "nonproductive things"

#

so when you're relaxing, make sure you're actually relaxing. Find out what works for you to turn off the work part of your brain (I can't answer what works for you, but you should try to find it even if it means medication or something)

solemn sparrow
# sonic sentinel this is a huge issue i noticed like 15m ago so if you're thinking "that seems li...

Just remember that in life balance is key as well as rest. If you are constantly trying to be productive there is a high risk of burning out which impedes your long term productivity. If your goals are success yes you should give in a lot of effort but always try to keep it at "60-80%". One year of 100% effort isn't shit compared fo 10 years of 80% effort since you'll probably be forced to take rests due to mental health.

#

Although this all strongly depends on your personality

#

and who you are as a person

cinder zephyr
#

balance is right, but balance means balancing 100% work (which you seem to be doing) with 100% relaxing

solemn sparrow
#

But yeah main point is work hard and relax hard lmao

cinder zephyr
#

when you sleep, make sure it's the best sleep you can get (so if you have trouble sleeping like I do, find ways to fix that)

#

when you're relaxing, make sure you're doing things you enjoy

solemn sparrow
#

And being social is a important aspect as well some people need more some less but we do need it

cinder zephyr
cinder zephyr
#

it sounds like you partially suffer from what I suffer from, which is that on paper I relax alot but in reality I barely feel relaxed

#

and I think time tracking is good in actually identifying that

solemn sparrow

halcyon mantle
#

i'm currently revising for an extremely big linear algebra and euclidean geometry exam, any tips on how to revise proofs? There are like 100+ proofs they could ask me about

#

for most of them, it's easy to build them on the spot, but some things like Sylvester's inertia theorem or the existence of a Jordan Normal Form are a little different

main elbow
#

make a list of the harder/non-intuitive/etc proofs, ones you think you couldnt just do on the spot
try to break each one down into 'ideas' which are smaller pieces of the proof that you can describe in words that can guide you through it
then just be sure you know the 'ideas' behind the proofs and that you can prove those independant parts

#

alternatively, utilise plain and simple rote work
try to do the proof
cant do it, look at next line from notes then keep going
repeat

halcyon mantle
#

prolly gonna try a combination of the 2

#

i could use something like anki to ask me random stuff

My point still stands either way, the important thing to memorise is the ideas and methods

main elbow
#

oral maths exam ? damn ive never heard of that

glass peak
#

Of if it’s an oral exam I stand by my point even more, knowing the main steps is the important thing and the nitty gritty is less important / easy to fill in

#

So if you know the main steps like the chain of quotentets etc you’ll be fine

Yeah, ill try to work a little bit more on the big picture instead of focusing on all these details
