ah, numerics stuff? that makes sense
I think so
I think I found people use Lean more than Sage
yeah, but within the department
population who use Sage is really limited compared to Lean. But Matlab is more majority
at least from where I am from
š¤ I've like never heard of average mathematicians using lean tbh
Some CS theorist-Applied Math use that
Didn't know the goat had an American accent as a frenchman
what, lol
The video content though
āTopologyā
Algebraic Topology?
tfw you read an article on a topic you know nothing about, but you know almost all the authors in the bibliography

in my case rn, some introduction to matroid theory
Who can gift me robux free?
i'll send you robux, give me your name, DOB, SSN and bank account number
šnty
Hey guys, is there a good physics discord (or irc/xmpp/matrx/whatever) server that doesn't require you to verify your account with your phone number?
no one would join
I just want to find a preexisting server
to create a server and have people join your server, you need to offer something of value
im largely just a parasite, I don't have any knowledge to offer
well, I guess not a parasite because people who help me out should be feeling good about it
otherwise they wouldnt help me out
but the point is it's just not going to work
recommended book for linear algebra ? ? if possible not huffman kunze nor anton nor C Lay
@fresh comet How's it going? I just had an exam lol
good! how was your exam?
Not a disaster but not terrific either. Didn't finish the last two questions :/
what was the exam on?
Economics lol
Like self-studying wise?
Okay I guess. A bit stressful but not too bad
How bout ya? Has anything nice happened recently?
I've been doing a whole lot of nothing lately
ig I'm finally done with school entirely though, until Sept
have my driving test in... 2 weeks
hoping I don't bomb it
Oh but I went to a certain place for a week, starting from two weeks back. It was a pretty nice experience. But I can't elaborate too much without narrowing myself down a lot lol
Same I have totally been very productive preparing for my exams
52 Kelvin?
Tbh latexing is probably peak productivity for me, I can get very into it
Look at the bottom right lol. Milikelvin
The people there were nice
yes
would you rather pray on your friend's downfall
i have no friends so this is vacuously true
okay, but what about users who you're on good terms with
are you praying for my downfall too??
i pray that they and i fall into bad terms
do you want to make that a reality rn

destroyed
ok, it's time to avoid speaking with suremark for the rest of the day
thatās 20 minutes left for me
if you got coerced to say this, blink 2 times
I guess suremark wants to watch the world burn

Why not #malevolentantichristformod ?
no
Because this cat is biased and will not support anyone with dog pfp
Because the character limit
Who are you to say that I don't support Satan's child as a mod?
satan's child needs to be a pink mod
I am the one who knows your evil intentions, I am the one who will expose you, I am the one who knows you are secretly building catgpt
how do you know that!!\

I wish I am the one who make catgpt and not the silly graph network

So on another server, someone said that they looked nice (With a picture), and I said they look like a 5 (which is average.) thus was seen by the mods as a personal attack why?
I seem to offend people a lot...
@frank orchid Was the person inviting evaluations or just wanted to post themselves looking nice
bcs if the latter it could generally be seen as rude or at least uncomfortable to be rating them anything at all
if they were inviting people to evaluate (eg "how do i look") it can get a lot more complicated because this could be all sorts of situations
but even then the scale 0-10 i strongly believe is not centred on 5
instead i think its centred sloghtly higher, around 6 or 7
thats a weird one tho idk how wellknown this is
how the hell do you even rate people's appearance on a 1-10 scale
I don't understand how this is even possible
many people seem to have an intuitive understanding of it, tho it seems to be largely vibes based and personally subjective, and everyone that tries to make it into some sort of rigorous objective scale is a deranged freak in some incel typeof space. So your question is basically unanswerable unfortunately
except for "some ppl just do"
Because youāre just being a dick? Why would you decide to just rate someone? Itās extremely objectifying, you canāt do so in anyway objectively and itās also just fucking weird
And on a scale to 10, sure 5 is in the middle but we all know people think of 7 as the average
But also just donāt ārateā random people who didnāt ask for it
This video might be interesting for you to watch, itās not exactly this but itās similar

i alr covered all of that but without berating or assuming
whats the point of studying 8hr/day to make a 44
like fucking honestly
it's just demoralizing asf
Yeah I didnāt see your comment until after I posted it (mobile issue), I wasnāt trying to talk over you or anything so my bad. Iāve got no problem with being a bit of a dick though
is it even possible to study 8hr a day
like you're all proud and excited bc you think you did good then you see the score and you're like "oh makes sense"
if you don't sleep yes
ive decided i can sleep when im dead
i used to study 4 hours a day, couldn't study for a week straight
the point is i'm studying so hard and still getting fucked by my exams
its allg nws o7
like wtf
it's exciting to study for a good grade for the first five days
it's not fun after that
i was really proud of myself for making an effort but how can u be proud of Fs
you should consider cutting back on the quantity of your studying and increase the quality
also sacrificing your sleep is one of the worst thing you can do, in that its only going to make it harder to study effectively. poor sleep is a total handicap
i already do this math server like every day, i do tutoring after class and i ask my friends/family for help studying
idk what else to do š
like do i just suck?????
Idk, I stayed up for (almost) two consecutive nights before a couple of my exams at christmas and did decent. On the other hand I got a lot more sleep for the previous set and I suspect I did worse... š
Facts, sleep and other physical and mental health upkeep things (such as eating and hydrating) are more importsnt than maxxing out study time
i have a unstoppable procrastination after the 4 hour mark
I find my ability diminishes the more my mind races -_-
can't study effectively after that
if u r even in little bit of bad shape at exam time (but also at study time) it can nerf you so hard
have you tried finding ways to help control this
pretty sure studies have shown that the average person can only do 4 hours of focussed work
i should just go to the accessibility center and tell them i'm fucking adhd + dyscalculia
I have finally managed to pass all my math courses (well, there's only one about algebraic topology left)
maybe theyll pity pass me
yeah it's just not possible to study after 4 hours
i tab out no matter how hard i focus
but i don't want a pity pass i want to genuinely understand this shit
Well i mean 4 hours is a bit arbritary but yeah, no one just has unlimited brain power, you will get tired
acman is that per day or in one go
people may have it worse, that doesnt mean you cannot try to improve your own situation
per day
so u cant game it by doing 4 hours in morning and then 4 hours in evening
I guess so idk
Rip
I lowkey feel splitting it like that helps me a lot tho but i basically never max out study time i just be doing stuff when i want to so idk abt focus limit
this would definitely be worth doing, you may get given extra time for exams or other allowances that could help you
I think there's two things that I found made me more efficient 1) PHONES ARE A DISTRACTION, REMOVE REMOVE REMOVE! 2) Have a plan BEFORE you start studying that way time isn't wasted in the studying time fumbling about.
Honestly I think phones produce a lot of stress. Cause there is always an update on somet
great advice
though of course it goes beyond phones, you should try to create an environment with as few distractions as possible
me when i study on my pc
<-- is on her phone as a distraction rigth now
i have to move to pen & paper
yes, it is an addiction we all seem to have. We "break for 5 mins" wooosh there goes an hour
you could try setting up a separate user with limited software/whatever. just the things you need to study
i'm pretty sure that won't help
i'm in control of the pc afterall
i can just turn it off lol
well yes, but it puts some extra barrier in the way
not saying its a perfect solution, but i know for many its helpful
i think it's best to just move to the traditional pen & paper
can create a mental split between 'work mode' and 'leisure mode' or etc
whiteboard apps are surely more fun tho š
Oh one other thing. @robust brook what is it u are studying?
math
ok why are u studying math?
ok...
i have exams coming up and now i feel extremely demotivated
well what do these exams mean to u?
Thanks for that...I'm a weido obviously
ok, why do you want to go to university?
ur going to uni to study calculus lol
well that's one of the things
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-36256-4#Sec11
if research papers take your fancy
Scientific Reports - The mere presence of a smartphone reduces basal attentional performance
what is the ultimate goal?
they do I will actually read this thank you
why do u want this knowledge?
its never something essential like that, nobody really "just is" a weirdo in the same way that nobody "just is" stupid. it takes careful reflection but also practice and time, so better not to give up even in your words
i love technology
ok, well it seems to me you have a plan, and these exams appear to be the first step. Can you see the importance of studying for them??
i wouldnt classify yourself based on this interaction. you came and asked for advice and now you know
dont put yourself down
yeah of course, i think the main thing that's holding me back is stuff that i hate learning
when i started my self study journey, i intentionally skipped geometry
now i'm forced to study it š
Why would you set off on a quest filled with learning if you hate it? More importantly, why do you hate learning?
i never liked geometry for some reason
Opinion: hs school geometry should be replaced by logic
yes, I have forgotten a lot of the irrelevent geometry that seems to only present itself in that course.
the basic propositional logic kind, or the
#foundations kind?
just the fact that i'm gonna forget half of the stuff after i pass the exams
I agree with teaching the former, not with the latter

dude circles are not funny
oh weāre talking about the hs geometry kind
yeah
First order sentences at least
I thought you meant geometry in general
I have a friend who does diff geo stuff, and I mentioned something about locally ringed spaces and he's like 'oh what's that' and like it's wild how this guy does not even know what a manifold is
/s but also /srs at the same time
then I totally agree
I don't really see the point of hs geometry past trig
me neither
Even the field of math called geometry doesn't use any hs geometry
is there really no value in HS geometry
But that's mostly trig

perhaps
@dreamy ore what is Euclidean geometry good for
(whenever you see this message)
The main justification is that we can teach people proof writing ig
While "seeing" the ideas so it doesn't feel meaningless
i remember somebody telling me i would need it for coordinate geometry
it apparently comes up in calculus
not too sure about that though
Coordinate geometry and trig are important yes
Angles in circles and conic sections stuff probably less
i see
maybe if you work in hyperbolic geometry, then the hs stuff has some use?
what's hs geometry
if not directly, then as motivation
High school
A bunch of angle and area chasing
hmm
In circles and parallelograms and stuff
i see, yeah that does not really build up to anything
but should be good practice in solving many types of problems
I think even in the oly math community there are many voices against oly geometry
i know even less about oly maths than i know about hs math
Oly geometry is like, 30 theorems / configurations / tricks to memorize
wack
Angle chasing 20 point diagrams
The only things I chase are diagrams
The only application I can think of for geometry beyond area, volumes, lengths, triangles (the very basics) is conics in the mechanics of orbits.
Yea eccentricity and stuff does show up in Newtonian gravity
I think it can be taught in the phy class tho
i chase only historical references
for like the past half a year
it's actually horrible
does anyone go to office hours? idk if i should ask my lecturer if what i think are mistakes in the lecture notes are mistakes, and if i should try to suggest a proof i found easier to understand than the one he showed in class
definitely worth doing
what is there to lose
thing is i dont want him to hate me in case ill need to ask something else in the future
planned office hours doesn't seem to be much of a thing at my uni, but i've asked to meet profs in their office before and it was amazing
its his job, he wont hate you for doing the work haha
also i've occasionally just shown up knocking at doors
he wont hate you if youre just polite
what do they do in office hours? ive yet to fit one in my schedule
i guess ill try to watch my behavior then
obviously dont go to him with every little thing if you can avoid it, take the time to go over it alone. but if you need to then absolutely do go
uhh i just showed up with questions and we had a lovely discussion
i mean i think the lecture notes have a few errors, might be wrong
especially for what u think might be mistakes or improvements it shld be chill
either they are errors and the prof can correct them, or you are mistaken and get the chance to be taught why
its a win-win
do you stay the whole hour? or leave right after you finished asking your questions?
yes i think then i will try to go to him, but would he be mad i come during his office hours? i mean it might take away free time from him
Office hours arent free time theyre time hes allocated to doing exactly this sort of stuff
dw it'll turn out fine
and you dont think he will hate seeing students coming?
absolutely not
only if he also hates the rest of his job
and do i leave right after im done with what i needed?
U dont have to stick around longer than you want
the only thing i've seen profs complain about regarding office hours is that students don't show
this lecturer seems pretty interested in improving proofs actually, and we share the same first name too
are there a lot of people in office hours? or is it gonna be a 1o1?
the class itself is i think 100+ 200+ students
i dont know

it's not just about money, it's about growth, impact, the whole incredible journey.
Fair, but it's mostly about money, isn't it.
I remember trying to save money by cutting my own hair. I was looking like I fought lawnmower and lost.
I cut my own hair because I irrationally dislike going to a barber/hairdresser
And being a mathematician, no one cares how presentable I look
based
Good for you but I remember it affected me. Everyone told me just be honest in the interview and the first question they asked "what is your greatest weakness" I panicked and answered "honesty" and they said "but I don't think it is a weakness" and I said " I don't give a darn what you think " to justify my answer
Spending my whole life thinking like this and then trying to date has been a mindfuck
I've been with my bf for 16 years so he no longer cares how I look either
I always keep it tight. But Iām no mathmagicianā¦
Meanwhile, I try to look presentable but my appearance just
i feel like the idea that i could always be using my time better has fucked me up really bad
first encountered it in "eat that frog" (never read the whole book just skimmed through it), i think reading 80000 hours guide also worsened it (it has a lot of useful ideas about effeciency),
but i also noticed the trend of these thoughts occuring before i read 80k hours so maybe it just exacerbated a problem that was already there?
i literally made like a "value/time" spreadsheet for every productive task i have
but i still literally have to remind myself mentally "there is no way there is a more productive task you can do right now the spreadsheet says so just do it"
and of course a value/time spreadsheet doesn't solve everything because you still have issues like: will the effort i put into this task make me too burned out to do other tasks? how much time will i end up spending doing productive stuff?
which practically shouldn't matter (or you could just use your intuition)
but i feel like it does because "if i am not spending my time doing the 100% best thing i could be doing right now my life will definitely go to shit or something"
and even at non-productive time its always like "would i have more fun doing something else"
this is a huge issue i noticed like 15m ago so if you're thinking "that seems like a very huge issue that i probably would not have described in the discussion-2 channel of the math discord server" your opinion is REASONABLE
I didn't read everything you put but personally I would try to figure out a way to give up on that stuff, drop worrying about squeezing efficiency out of your time, seems to be sucking the fun out of it
usually I just have a list of stuff I could do and then do one thing on it (whichever I want)
and then additionally you should probably dedicate some (lots of?) time to doing stuff that's not on the list, if you're someone that feels like they need to be productive all the time
ok I started time tracking recently
so I can understand where you're coming from
but here's what really you need to keep in mind
1: you as a human being cannot be working 24/7
every waking hour
if your rational is that you wouldn't be productive, then consider that since you won't feel rested the time you do spend working is less productive if you aren't feeling your best
I wouldn't focus on valuing certain tasks over another, that seems obcessive and destructive
instead, focus on giving everything 100%
and here's the trick
everything means everything, including relaxing and sleeping and spending time with friends and family and other "nonproductive things"
so when you're relaxing, make sure you're actually relaxing. Find out what works for you to turn off the work part of your brain (I can't answer what works for you, but you should try to find it even if it means medication or something)
Just remember that in life balance is key as well as rest. If you are constantly trying to be productive there is a high risk of burning out which impedes your long term productivity. If your goals are success yes you should give in a lot of effort but always try to keep it at "60-80%". One year of 100% effort isn't shit compared fo 10 years of 80% effort since you'll probably be forced to take rests due to mental health.
Although this all strongly depends on your personality
and who you are as a person
balance is right, but balance means balancing 100% work (which you seem to be doing) with 100% relaxing
But yeah main point is work hard and relax hard lmao
when you sleep, make sure it's the best sleep you can get (so if you have trouble sleeping like I do, find ways to fix that)
when you're relaxing, make sure you're doing things you enjoy
And being social is a important aspect as well some people need more some less but we do need it
I think this is a good thing to identify
in the same track as this
it sounds like you partially suffer from what I suffer from, which is that on paper I relax alot but in reality I barely feel relaxed
and I think time tracking is good in actually identifying that
Also a healthy diet and regular exercise helps a TON
when it comes to your overall energy output
I think a lot of people cut themselves short in those areas

i sent u them
oh okay!
i mean im not trying to be productive 24/7, that's not my issue, ive already accepted that:
how much time will i end up spending doing productive stuff?
and even at non-productive time its always like "would i have more fun doing something else"
valuing some tasks over others seems pretty natural and like a good policy to have, like even from a qualitative viewpoint there are productive tasks that are nice if i did them and ones that are super duper important
this was sort of (not exactly) the problem in the first place. if i set some time to relax ill be wondering "is there a way i can relax better" indefinitely
i say not exactly because you phrased it like you're either relaxing or you're not. "don't bother trying to improve your relaxation if you're relaxing some much" sounds reasonable
hey

How good is chatgpt with the wolfram plugin

I believe it is dogshit
For some reason I get the feeling you're talking about chatgpt generally and not specifically about it the wolfram plugin
Hey
which board
how did u do that ap one
10th cbse
ok.
bro it's easy.
let first term be A. the next term add y, add again y.
it was just linear equations.
ikr. kinda. i have bunch of knowledge of random stuff.
i know nothing more of that AP.
The wolfram plugin just lets it query WolframAlpha right
oh lmao no problem its easy
how many chapters have u completed of maths

polynomials, number system, lines and angles, euclidean geo, no more.
with school
euclidean sucks
of also works though
nah. it's interesting.
yes. but foundational.
are u in any institute like allen or aakash?
fav.... that only. i like the basic concepts on which the whole of geometry is built.
yes, from 9th i have joined Fiitjee.
nah its okay just study for now
it has vast amount of competition

Oh dear
that's too bad
Why is that, when I am trying to prove something, I almost always make an error in a part I decided it's okay to handwave?????
Like, not an error in understanding, but stupidist errors due to not paying attention
Maybe I didn't spread attention evenly enough
I can tell that its almost july because of the explosions going off

yup
what time zone?
Still available?

Can you be religious and a good mathematician? Do the two ideologies contradict? I want to be a Mathematician but I am a pretty strong theist as well
yeah
I know a few very good and accomplished mathematicians who are quite religious
why would they
Yes
math doesnt comment on religion
might be hard to be a good evolutionary biologist who also takes a very literal view on religious texts
but it doesn't seem like religion stops you from doing good mathematics
Ramanujan was an insanely good (self taught) number theorist and he said that many of his insights came from communicating with God
Dr. Francis Collins is a good example of one
Gƶdel was as well I believe
yeah I mean I'm sure there are very good evolutionary biologists who are also religious
they probably either separate their religious views from their science, or are otherwise able to recoincile them
@covert oracle
Hi
I gave my ISI PhD interview yesterday
Holy heck, like the entrance?
Yeah
Oooh, isibang?
Nah kolkata
š
š
So...is it a stat topic?
No, it's cs
My final year project was ML but idk if I wanna continue that
It's too fast for my taste
It's glorified hand waving
Lmao
There's no proper theoretical backbone
It's kinda like throwing tools at a problem till something works
At our IISER, there's this dude who just indoctrinates everyone to take up math and work under him
Like prof
More manpower ig
Which iiser
There's an iiser there
š
It's one of the 'old' ones
With probably the second worst math faculty
Kolkata takes the prize
Thank fk I didn't join Kolkata
It's entirely a stat department
Then again I had more interest in Physics
Again
Kolkata being good at physics has always been propaganda
Pushed by their graduates and inflated nature indices
Whaaaa
Yep
At least Pune is good right?
And no hate but, the department is homogeneous
Eh
It's a star studded faculty
But
I don't hear much from them
The only thing TVM manages to do right is material sciences
In physics
Like, soft CMP
Even for that I think IISc is better
Yeah
Mann only if I didn't have to give fuckin competitive exams for every single thing
Why?
I only gave mains, iat, and CMI/ISI
Bad bad health
I just had my third surgery for that
Like, two weeks back lmao
Honestly all iisers should have the option for exit with a bachelors
True
And electives
A lot of electives
It's been two years but I haven't seen a single alg geom elective
It's laughable
It's all applied math topics offered as electives
I'll have to push for them, i need courses in alg
What's the minimum student required for an elective
Our batch really wanted a course in mathematical logic but no one was ready to teach it
That's sad
Lmao we were 5, till I convinced my roommate to give up physics and join maths
Lmao based
And the general idea here is that only low gpa holders take up math
Like, math is a major if you don't get any other option
I think that's prevalent in every other IISER
WHAAAAAT That's like getting shot cause you have pain in your leg
The stats back up the statement š
I think my batch was the last where everyone got what they wanted
My junior had a student who wanted bio but got maths
Diabolical shit
He had to leave niser cause he couldn't pass any course
Lmao
Man
That's exactly what happens here
People barely pass in math
Except for the MScs and 1-3 BS-MS peeps
Are there others who are genuinely interested in maths
Btw @covert oracle why do you have a one-piece name but cyberpunk pfp?
Uhh
Uta
I haven't watched one piece
Cyberpunk pfp goes hard
I don't remember why but uta has always been my online name
Ah, alright

I let you do it once, but now it's becoming spam
Oof my bad didn't think it was that bad I just post it once I start
You've posted it four times in the last two days already
In two different channels, but understood won't do it
Guys if I am doing pre-calculus in college what should I learn
Your textbook
I mean like what to prepare me for it like algebra or geometry or wtv I didnt do well in math in hs so I hope I am able to understand whats in the textbook
The quick place I would suggest you to look at is Khanacademy. Look there to get the exposure to the topic and look for other resources like textbook or youtube video to reinforce your understanding
Khanacademy is super good yeah ^
Yeah I started using Khan to refresh my memory on Algebra and what do you think about Professor Leonard
Professor Leonard is the goat
marla is on the student council. the council will select 3 members at random to run the Can Drive. there is a 50% chance that marla will be chosen. how many students are on the council?
what level of math is this question?
elementary, highschool, college?
11122233444 is a perfect square number
i'd say "high schooler interested in math" should be able to answer.
Is the analytic continuation of the zeta function defined?
Yes
The function ā1/n^s on Re(s) > 1 can be analytically continued to a function on the complex plane without 1
Yes but can u just write another function that doesnt need to be analytically continued and gives the same results
There are many functions on C-{1} that coincide with ā1/n^s on Re(s) > 1
But there's only one holomorphic function
Can we define that function
you're wrong
i already figured it out but thanks
??
it sounds very subjective, unless there is a specific curriculum this specific type of question is in
no you're just wrong
oh ok
Mainstream mathematics community has no clue what it means to be a number, never mind the utter drivel called "transcendental number'. The idiots who coined this phrase were not only ignorant and incorrigibly stupid, but were probably also high on drugs.

the fuck
what is this channel
"The New Calculus is the first and only rigorous formulation of calculus in human history. Despite the many attempts to denigrate and destroy, it has grown phenomenally and now well-liked by thousands of math enthusiasts, engineers, educators, software developers and scientists around the globe.
I am a pariah among the academic community. I tell it exactly like it is. The infinite stupidity of modern academics (the BIG STUPID) must be exposed and education reformed for the survival of mathematics and science. My videos are all IMPROMPTU, so there are bound to be some minor errors. "
@velvet dagger
Yeah okay dead
lmfao
Yeah he's cooked
A pretty well known crank
it popped up on my feed
time to throw away the entire account ig
(FYI: just clear history to disinfect algorithm)
LMAO i know
o
I'm a math major and i want to get rich fast what career should i pick after graduating
Finance, like quantitative analyst and what not
Mathematical finance, biostats
Start a pyramid scheme
Have you tried turning the universe off and on again

what's the difference between discussion and discussion-2?
this ones better
what channel is better for discussing proofs in abstract algebra?
or that

discussion 2 has better story, action and CGI
Happy Ļ day!
Same tau you
Also I read this channel and I don't read the other
because I'm old and the breakneck pace of that chat confuses me
Yes that's right
Hello!
I just joined because I was having trouble figuring out how to evenly space circles in a circle and have them be the right diameter and then decided to look up a random mathematics discord
Would anyone like to help me with this?
wait there are help chats
circle packing doesn't come under the purview of any of the thematic channels other than maybe #recreational-math , but it's the kind of thing people in #math-discussion might be interested in
there's a wiki page with solutions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_packing_in_a_circle
use a help channel if it's something else
Calculator
i was expecting a better one but okay
Right
1444
,w sqrt(1444)
sed
When does
10^k+ (4(10^k -1) / 9) = a^2
basically
k=3 is answer
144 and 1444 are perfect square numbers
Neat
1 is also perfect square
0
3249 is a perfect square so is
324
1444
144
3249
324
Okay
18496 and
1849
Perfect square numbers
64009 and
6400
I mean and technically 64
237169 and 23716
364816 and 36481
My friend said check 256 and 2561
Not
Okay
64009 and 6400 is nice pair
Like 1444 and 144
519841 and 51984
K ima just look for a cool one
Yes
Ahh I see
So thats the 3rd nice pair
Pretty rare to find cool ones
92294449 and 9229444
Lots of clusters, seeing a suspicious pattern...
iām severely lacking in my reading in the history of physics post ~1650, i just learned planckās idea of the quantum nature of reality predates Bohrās atomic model by 13 years
I dont see any more cool ones
Ok so the 4 cool pairs of perfect numbers is 1444, 64009, 26666896, and 92294449
Now waiting for hot pairs
My friend said -1 is also perfect square
Thats imaginary š

Define perfect square
Hows it cool
Counts down to 6 consecutive numbers
But a lot of gibberish later on so not as impressive
Thats minority of the number
I mean if you consider this you can probably find an infinite amount of interesting ones
True
I find it odd that people find these stuff cool, our current number system is just a tool of measurement, there wont come any new insight from such things as its only noteable to the tool
Humans find ants going into their ant hill cool
My teacher told once numbers which are squares of some integer
Really?
Square root of 4761 š
They have to be an integer no?
To begin with
Yes
100 is a square of 10
Yea?....
Cool right?
Root
i is not an integer
Right
This whole chat is people saying something obvious and then its like yeah...
Yeah
GUYS 2 to the power of 2 is same as 2x2 š¤Æš¤Æ
and amount of motivation to work on mondays = 0 * ā
3x2-2+3x3 = 6-2+9
Is it add or subtract first
For Pemdas its add first
it would be -5
not 13
6-11
Am I correct
6-2 is also addition of numbers 6 and -2
Where did you get a -2 I dont get it
6 + (-2)
From the question
This is a common misconceptions
P,E,(M/D),(A/S)
i'm currently revising for an extremely big linear algebra and euclidean geometry exam, any tips on how to revise proofs? There are like 100+ proofs they could ask me about
for most of them, it's easy to build them on the spot, but some things like Sylvester's inertia theorem or the existence of a Jordan Normal Form are a little different
make a list of the harder/non-intuitive/etc proofs, ones you think you couldnt just do on the spot
try to break each one down into 'ideas' which are smaller pieces of the proof that you can describe in words that can guide you through it
then just be sure you know the 'ideas' behind the proofs and that you can prove those independant parts
alternatively, utilise plain and simple rote work
try to do the proof
cant do it, look at next line from notes then keep going
repeat
prolly gonna try a combination of the 2
i could use something like anki to ask me random stuff
You will not be asked to prove that the Jordan decomposition in an exam, its long and testing your ability to memorise proofs is pointless
Just learn the basic ideas behind proofs, youāll be asked to show things which might use the same idea as a proof youāve seen, but just asking you to bang out a proof youāve seen of some major theorem is utterly pointless
trust me, they ask to prove it in my department, i've seen some exams
Extremely pointless exercise, thatās just kinda sucky for you
yeah i know
i have to clarify that it's an oral exam, not even a written one (there are two written exams before it)
My point still stands either way, the important thing to memorise is the ideas and methods
oral maths exam ? damn ive never heard of that
Of if itās an oral exam I stand by my point even more, knowing the main steps is the important thing and the nitty gritty is less important / easy to fill in
So if you know the main steps like the chain of quotentets etc youāll be fine
Yeah, ill try to work a little bit more on the big picture instead of focusing on all these details
thanks for the tips Acman and Nope
nws ! gl
I remember taking oral maths exam it made me think inside the box
@gaunt dock so what were the questions?
i was just further trying to understand the idea of the probabilistic method
is it like
you lay all possible graphs on a wall and since probability is positive and probability can also be expressed as wanted configurations divided by total configurations, we know that wanted configs are > 0
i just wanna confirm my understanding
Right
oki
also how does this tie up with expected value?
The expected value is a pretty similar argument
They both basically boil down to "if the thing didn't exist, there would be probability 0 of selecting it"
and then by contrapositive, we can see that since the probability isn't 0, it must exist
why is this method so powerful cuz this is just an obvious statement
Well yes, it's an obvious statement
But what it lets us do is show that our object exists without having any idea what it looks like
Suppose two graphs, H and K, have the same vertex set. Is there a common name for the binary operation * for which G = H*K has V(G) = V and E(G) = E(H) U E(K)?
Hola discussy
uhhh solving anything that involves shapes ig
lengths and areas
real
Real
this is just graph union in the special case that V(H) = V(K)
not disjoint union, which is what most people consider when they say union of graphs
but yea this is a known thing and I guess common name would be union
how do i get to know how much number theory i dont know? what are the basics?
Opening Weil's classic 'Basic Number Theory' will tell you how much you don't know
Math textbooks putting the word ābasicā/āintroductionā before writing about the craziest shit you ever seen
Right
skill issue
im kinda debating between going into internal medicine and elctrical eng any recomendatuions i live in montreal so skl debt isnt an issue but because its very saturated here job security is an issue andso ispau
Go for electromedical engineering
Just go to engineering, for job security
that is true indeed
I guess there is Introduction to Langlands
if this is true then I'm joining you

no fr I will be hiring mathematicians
@neat lintel I think red pandas are quite a stellar animal, good looks, good vibes, it's been my pfp for around 4 years now
i think other people share that sentiment
i have 3 dogs and red pandas aren't domesticated but id love to have one as a pet
there is yea
Yeah I am getting skill issued
tfw you defend a PhD on Langlands stuff that you self taught with no help from your advisor
chad
This you?
How
yea
I never thought about your advisor
working with an advisor will probably be slower for some people I imagine
Are they in adjacent field of Langlands
me neither
they do stuff that is adjacent to function field Langlands
but they have not thought much about number field Langlands until reading my thesis
nah i see lots of people with red panda's pfp lol and yes it's def cute
enlightment moment
question: does one talk to their advisor's other concurrent students or no?

we would get dinner every week while I was in Toronto
then I've likely spoken to one
I'm pretty much friendly with all of my GAs
math ones, of course
cs ones are pepeg level infinity
yeah I definitely have
he was teaching the linear algebra course my friends were taking this summer
I was my advisor's first student which was lonely at first but once he has enough (4-5) students he made sure to schedule group meetings and we formed a nice cohort
that's nice
that's awesome
I really like this atmosphere
yeah it's really nice
just a group meeting where everyone throws out ideas and do math
yeah we would take turns talking for half an hour about what we were up to
nice to keep everyone on the same page
that and the social aspect was nice
I think I would call this a healthy environment
Tffffff
Guess this reveals difficulty of Langlands
playing life on hard mode
the two situations aren't that different
it's just you get used to certain things in one setting that are not exactly the same in the other
also what I did was way more involved on the Langlands side than he has ever had experience with

So I guess your thesis was more about how to go from aut world to motivic world via shimura?
well more or less
it was mostly about explicit computations of cohomology of Shimura varieties
that sounds fun
yeah it was fun
did you defend yet?
yeah I defended today

I feel like I'm more interested in L functions and the automorphic world
Not exactly the same
You mean wildly different
how did it go?
.>
went great!
š
we slightly fucked up paperwork but it's getting fixed
Oh is nG basically PhD now
apparently you're supposed to file paperwork about the actual time and date of the defense but this is not on the list of deadlines for paperwork filing
and people only file it when they go to schedule a room for the defense
but since the defense was remote it just like
got forgotten
