is how its done
I think I pronounce it limsup in my head
but like
not sup as in soup
sup as in sup

sup losers
sup shuri
sup cutey

limes superior
limes? as in the cousin of lemon?
How did the street-smart analysts greet each other? "Sup"
that's actually good lmao
That's if you pronounce it the other way
but it is indeed pronounced as 'soup' isn't it?
"Sup G delta?
fk dynking lambda - pi theorem be hurting my head
that is a theorem we do not talk about
just black box that shit
Someone on here once criticized me for getting my degree just to shitpost and they aren't wrong
what's that?
the pi-lambda theorem?
yeah
the dynking lambda system generated by a collection that is closed under finite intersections coincides with the sigma algebra generated by that collection
yea this
so we know already that dynkin systems are sigma algbera iff they are pi
it basically tells you when a sigma algebra is contained in a particular 'system of sets'
sth sth dynkin system contains a pi system if and only if the sigma algebra generated by the pi system is contained in the dynkin system
so it suffices to show that the generated dynkin system is also pi
anywho
yeah, and moreover it gives you an easy route to prove two measures are unique. Just show that the sigma algebra of one is contained in the dynkin system of the other and boom, the theorem gurantees they are the same
it's a dumb low tech way of proving some elementary stuff, it's not super important
i saw that question posted the other day lol
didn't know you were supposed to use this theorem
neat
folland also used a different theorem to prove that outer measures extend premeasure uniquely or smth
but that's a bit different
at any rate, you can use all 3 to prove the uniqueness of the lebesgue measure
caratheodory maybe?
we used caratheodory's extension lemma or theorem idr
oh google says you're right
alright
hey
hi eric 😭
you like jazz?
I have a jazz playlist that spidey sent me if you want
no I was just quoting the bee movie lol
😭
send
Honestly this is the largest playlist I've ever seen
Spidey really likes jazz Ig
only 315 tracks?
that's like 6.3% of my playlist
Same
I felt like it's kinda slow and not for me, I might have trash music taste but I like what I like
apple music deleted my library after i unsubscribed for a length period of time
hard drive master race
Same
I would probably like jazz if the songs weren't so repetitive
every time you listen to one it feels like you already heard it somewhere
That’s why I hate freestyle jazz. It goes on forever with the same thing over and over again.
could this be divine judgement
i refuse to believe god would pass judgment on my collection of classical music recordings instead of someone’s stoner metal collection
passing judgement on your make of device more likely
guess i was just the lucky one out of 1.5 billion
common apple L
Tbh I think all streaming services do this

@ chat revive
discussion 2 more active than 1
Is there any active reading group for abstract algebra (Algebra by Michael Artin) ?
nah just ping me 5 times to revive chat 💀
why do people use fruits in their user name
discussion 2 always dies fast
what if i don't
there's one for dummit-foote in #events but idk if they are still accepting people
Afaik they are, we just finished 1.6
Chapters are pretty short and exercises not too difficult
Wtf why wasn't I invited I'm in that book too
Ok I sent the dm
Nope not really
hopefully someone has a better suggestion than this, but one way you can do it:
throw each paragraph into google translate (or something like that)
then paste each section back into the document above the original section
put each in two separate functions, one called 'english' and another called 'romanian' or something like that, so you can selectively hide either section to maintain the original to refer to and also so you aren't throwing away the old version by toggling between the two functions
have you tried googling this exact phrase
Google might think u mean lay-tex not lay-tek
lol
that sucks, good luck with that
you have to be really specific with googling LaTeX things or you might get porn instead of the language
happened to me a lot
that has never happened to me
google knows what tterra wants
boxed in red latex what could go wrong
google doesn't know what i want then
Latex porn!??? Oh, ohhhhh I just realised what you mean
I will not google this
I actually did and it was all math
@dusky estuary hi
Hi
can you post your question again?
If P leads to a contradiction, then we say not P is true, and vice versa. However, what if there's a statement P such that P leads to a contradiction, but not P also leads to a contradiction?

so $(P\lor \lnot P)\to \bot$, right?
Nekory
let's see what happens in boolean algebra
if i use material implication, assuming contradiction is 0
i get
I mean, $(P \to \bot) \land (\lnot P \to \bot)$
he77789
it's the same thing
or breaks out as and in implication
$\lnot(P\lor \lnot P)\lor 0$
Nekory
so that's just $(\lnot P\land P)$
Nekory
that's just 0
so the whole statement is a contradiction
and hence your system is what we called inconsistent
in an inconsistent system, all statements are true (and hence false)
does this make sense?
(of course I am assuming the law of excluded middle)
Ah I see. So, if I can derive such P from the axioms of a system, it follows that the axioms are inconsistent?
i said basis representation day yesterday, well i lied
it's today
and i think i have an idea of what i needa do

@#serious-discussion stop dying!!!
:whenlifegetsatyou:
you're playing geometry dash : D
what upside down T mean
nvm i think it's the contradiction symbol
Yeah
It means false
upside down F for true
you could always just talk to yourself in the ch
if it gets dead
just start working out math problems
be like
"OK. I have 4x+12=-10"
"Alright. So by property of cancellation we can do the thing where 4x+12-12=-10-12"
"Yeah that looks good"
"Now the 12s cancel."
"On the right we just get that -22"
anyone think they help me with a geometry prove
bro .... fr
like they asked for calcuations i got it
now they want this prove on the tringle and stuff
im lost...
be like "bruh just LOOK AT THE TRIANGLE THOSE ARE TWO RIGHT ANGLES SEE"
nah but
geometry really definition based
start with your initial givens then run it down with definitions and theorems until your result pops out
The voices hae won
Triangles are trivial
In Euclidean geometry at least
Quadrilaterals are quadrivial
Slick
Name one interesting thing about a triangle
That isn't more interesting when you make it about quadrilaterals
I see parallelopipeds everywhere I go
A quadrilateral is just two triangles
What is euclidian geometry
Euclidean geometry is when
$g_{ij}=\delta_{ij}$
wraithlord_kohonorable
Im 15 and have just gotten started on radians I know nothing compared to you guys
Euclidean geometry is when straight lines look like straight lines
Wait no
I have a better one
triangle prism is more interesting than quad prism
Euclidean Geometry is when parallel lines exist and are unique passing through a point
An example of noneuclidean geometry is the surface of a sphere, all pairs of "straight" lines eventually intersect
I.e. if we both walk north we'll touch the north pole
This is the euclidean one right
🐒
Triangles on the surface of a sphere have an internal angle sum possibly greater than 180 degrees
Try making a triangle with three 90 degree angles (on the surface of a sphere)
So this is a different geometry from the Euclidean geometry of 180 degree triangles, parallel lines, and all the normal stuff you're probably being exposed to
euclidean geometry is normal
other geometry is dreamed up by devious mathematicians who want to deceive you
All geometry is normal
Even the degenerate geometries are perfectly natural
The only unnatural geometries are the ones in higher than 4 dimensions
Or only 4 weird. >=5 they are too nice, <=3 also nice
why is 4d weird
Geometry is founded in the visual part of experience, which extends in its extremities to 4 dimensions
The visual part of experience is often non Euclid
In the middle. It’s big compared with <=3, and too small compared with >=5. There is a book discussing weird topological properties of four dimensional manifolds
Higher dimensional topological tricks don't kick in
And lower dimensional tricks stop working
Homeomorphic to the sphere means diffeomorphic to the sphere, except in 4D (IIRC)
look up exotic sphere
Anyone have knowledge of linear congruential generators?
Anyways 4D is perfectly normal
Exotic 7 spheres
Does anyne know my question's answer?
Even Dami didn't realize it was math discussy
All these guys loitering outside of the designated loitering channels
Lol

@dapper badge 🅱️ alter do you have any recommendations for things/concepts in AG to keep in mind while I learn commalg? I've been trying to skim through some AG notes just to get an idea of where the stuff I learn can be applied but it's all too...overwhelming for me to immediately understand, especially since I haven't even mastered basic definitions
So just like "concepts" to remember related commalg rather than specific definitions in AG itself that use the language of commalg
I'm trying to learn commalg so I can do some light AG reading eventually™️
Uhh, I'm not really sure lol. Tbh I didn't really learn commutative algebra all that well my first time around and I still don't know as much as I'd like to.
I know Reid has a book called like undergrad algebraic geometry that I've heard good things about. In particular I've heard that it motivates some of the commutative algebra ideas that are prevalent in AG

Sorry I can't be of much help
Best of luck with learning
HELP
I have a non math related question
How do you write the date in an MLA 9 paper?
Because I am confused how to do it
😂
this whole website is really great!
I tried asking my friend if they knew the answer
They replied "You're asking a Computer science major lol"
God why are pickly pears so seedy

just bookmarked that, thanks
Hello
alr fuck it I should rly stay out of #math-discussion
@solar hawk brother he literally gave it to you in words
both math words
and english words
not like I understand grp theory + other things to do + and I'll learn it when I get there anw

you just don't understand bc you don't know the algebra to understand
he literally said it wasnt in the theorem tho
they just said i had the pre req a second ago
the homomorphism part is a part of it
you know what a quotient group is?
I feel like I saw someone say you didn't
yeah.
istg maybe I should get permastudying again 😭

I’m currently reading fermats last theorem and am nearing the end, I’m currently on the bit about modular forms and want to learn more about it. I only have a uk college level education, how can I learn more about it ?
YouTube
I’ll try
🥹
I dont want to learn yet because I still don’t know if wiles proves the taniyama-shimura conjecture and I want it to be a suprise 😂😂
Yeah I learned from random people on YouTube explaining anything it’s really good
I’ve managed to learn plenty of calc and stats from YouTube but modular forms will definitely be a step up 😂
sigma algebra
What is the algebra supposed to mean
The sigma algebra generated by all open mushrooms is the Morel sigma algebra
https://ia802907.us.archive.org/17/items/understanding-engineering-mathematics-john-bird-2014_202005/Understanding Engineering Mathematics - John Bird - 2014.pdf This book is good. But lie algebras are not algebras

If you click around you will find the english versions of these books
that'd be sad
hi
naw dawg, only if you want it to be
its just very sad
nah man, it's productive watch.
(K I need to solve x^2 + 4x +3=0. I'll start by factoring. Ok so this comes out to be (x+3)(x+1)=0. By zero factor property, x+1=0, x+3=0, so x=-1 and x=-3. Boom)
It will be like:

@wet mortar how was your day? I can ask a question too?
do I know you
You said you were happy when someone pings you
no I did not
Hold up
do i have to take a lot in discussion again just to get blue 😭

thats @zealous garden
why did you leave and join back
that's not how green leaf works
it's from being new to discord not to the server
oh wait it is from being new to the server

thonk looks like i already got active again
That's me!
It’s miserable
i kinda wanted to just time them out and delete the msgs
to not give them their getting banned speedrun
but eh
dang what did wraith do
@zealous garden we're taking action on you
time to go wraith!
you've been allowed to spread geometric algebra in this server for too long!

may their satisfaction be short-lived
are you doing a ban speedrun?
<@&268886789983436800>
Smh ryc too slow
you can just ping mods
never

zan wants to see this server burn
if i deem it important, i'll ping you
what for
2hu art where
what else is ryc adjacent
zan how am I supposed to make my beauty and the beast spinoff music if I have to constantly monitor this chat because people won't ping moderators smh
Never seen beauty and the beast but it rings a Belle
i have not found a ryc adjacent art piece
no
It's not art
how is that not art
Ryc do you have a favorite artist
someone saw a video game character that they liked and went "wow i want to draw a cute picture of her!"
uninspired and thoughtless
lmao
hmm, i mean
it's basic but i have to say van gogh
edward hopper is up there
for a non basic pick, i love frantisek kupka
have a few gorgeous kupka paintings
every single one of his paintings is jaw dropping to me tbh
klimt is a great choice
im not a picasso fan
but he's better than pop """"art"""" or rothko-esque modernism
I kinda like rothko
more power to you
I dunno, there's something.. nice about staring at a canvas like that and seeing all the subtleties of colors gradually jump out at you
"someone saw a woman that they liked and went "wow i want to draw a cute picture of her!"
uninspired and thoughtless"
- me, on the Mona Lisa
yes mona lisa is horrid
You won't like the creation of my total geometric algebra then
Oh yeah, you mentioned something about playing something if I rigged it up, what kinda style/mood?
you mean what kind of style would I want to play if you wrote something? write whatever you want as long as it's not insanely hard lol
Ye, and also like
If you’d prefer gloomy or happy or wtv
Or nonsense harmony
I’ll get rigging that up in the next handful of days (or tonight if I feel like it after able to)
Hello
Goya…now that fellow can be gloomy
What's gloomy about beans
Saturn Eating Jupiter
Yeah that's a freaky painting
Anyways what were we talking about?
I think someone is writing music for Eric to play
Cool beans
What's new with you
Avoiding the work I should be doing
What’s the work?
Grading papers
Math
Is this for an undergrad course?
No high school
Hm. I’ve never had a paper on math before…is it an essay on math theorems?
Do you give bonus marks for math jokes?
Hahaha I should
“I wish my math problems would solve themselves.”
Do you know any?
My bio prof gives bonus points for jokes and drawings
Maybe they'll go away if you ignore them
She says it breaks up the monotony of grading
Cool
Let’s see, I think I know some. ..
There’s the classic “Why is six afraid of seven?”
“Because seven ate nine!”
But do you know why 7 ate the irrational numbers too?
No?
It was part of a complete breakfast
O.O
You can have that joke
…you can keep it.
Anyone ever frustrated with the slow progress?
constantly nowadays!
Are you doing self-study?
Me too, both research and self-study
I spend about 1 hour per day on personal math stuff but it goes very slowly
What do you do psychologically to avoid frustration and to stay positive/hopeful?
keep at it
keeping up good eating and exercise, talking a lot with the other students in my department, pacing out the work im doing instead of doing 10 hours of work some days
That all sounds pretty positive.
(but also im doing pretty poorly with it anyway)
some days amount to 2 hours of just staring at something. Some days you can accomplish a lot in 2 hours
progress is not linear
I feel like that sometimes
Yeah, exactly.
I feel like I am always "behind" where I'm supposed to be
But I realized that I can't really help it
So I've become rather stoic about the whole thing
yeah
whenever i feel that I remind myself of the longer term progress i've made
sure, maybe the past few days hasn't been much
Hmm, that's a good idea as well
but if you look at this summer, or especially the past year, it's a lot more impressive and makes me feel better
Okay but yes it is. progress(ax+by)=aprogress(x)+bprogress(y). This is well-known, and follows from simple linear algebra.
I'm too dumb haha
does it
so like
say hypothetically you took a course two years ago and you managed to escape without understanding the material very well
and say hypothetically this was a very core course for your degree and the skills/concepts you learned in it were things you'd see repeatedly for the rest of your degree
and say hypothetically you somehow managed to BS your way with a piss poor understanding
but now you're reaching a point where you need a proper understanding and to discuss with a professor to clear things up
who...do you reach out to?
it feels wrong to ask my current professor (for the class of the homework I'm doing that utilizes these concepts) about this, because we're onto so much more advanced stuff and it seems like it'd just be a waste of time
but idk who else to ask lol
This is me and probability right now, good luck!
You should anonymously ask randos on online forums such as Discord
That;s what I did
Maybe even in some server specifically pertaining to your degree
rythm
The good news is it's easier to understand the second time around
I'm a part of ry gang :3
r(h)y gang
u could still bring it up
this kindof thing is common.
What are the maths-related possible jobs?
Which jobs don’t use math ? I have no clue
Next thing you know, you are using maths at your job

Anyone here know much about semiprimes?
What is a semiprime?

suphuman more like
whats the opposite of sub?
sup
right
bro has not heard of "superhuman"
what is the not very ppl role

What do you think the term superhuman means
human but super

still a human
bro is onto nothing
super human is like the supremum of humans
It’s literally being over humans
Bro said sup A \in A
There are only finitely many humans
it still bounds them right?
idk ... if the existence is just too great
it feels like superhuman could be an insult right!?
you're so real for this
Usually less work but more is expected of you
Like
For understanding what's going on

Shazam
what is supersymmetry then
a circle
a ball
a fourth dimensional ball
Gilgachad balls
how does that relate to particle physics
Idk if this is exactly what they mean but i know that physicists sometimes use "super" to mean "Z/2 graded"
So like, k forms supercommute, because w wedge v equals v wedge w up to a sign, and that sign depends on the degree of v or w
I think it's like (-1)^(deg v deg w) or something
And the exterior derivative satisfies a super-Leibniz rule
Supersymmetry should refer to Z/2 gradedness but idk if that's what they actually mean
Looking it up, this is what it seems to refer to. A supersymmetric theory is one which lives on a Z/2 grading. If you know about bosons and fermions, it seems to say that there is a correspondence between bosonic laws and fermionic laws.
does wikipedia literally agree with you
yes
i gotta stop getting food delivered
love
hate
Have you opened a help channel?
no
that's not really what it means
(it's almost what it means though)
I see
Do any of you know how to attach a unit vector onto a smooth curve at a specific t value in Geogebra?
All thanks to supersymmetry
you know I'm beginning to understand why everyone clowns engineers so much
I can't believe this is what I'm paying $8000 a semester for
feather is truly an engineer
it's a badly computed fourier transform
a what
engineering education
how long is a semester
16 weeks
grief
watch your words kid I’ll be designing one of them cars you drive one day
do brits use cars
or are they still on horse carriages
I can't drive
Cheaper than most places in the states
We are still on horse carriages
that's wildly expensive
This is really well made if hand drawn
hoq much money will you make per year?
yeah this is silly, the kid is old enough to sit shotgun smh
☠️
I was doing a problem and noticed this weird pattern. Anyone recognize it?
1 1
1 2 1
1 6 6 1
1 24 90 24 1
...
Its like a weird pascal's
The problem was
For a chess board of size n, how many positions are there such that you can place k rooks on every row and column?
Kids really be sitting on shotguns smh
Wrong channel
have you looked into n queens problem?
Its a bit different though
No diagonals and you allow attacking rooks
sounds like it should be n!
wait
oh
i fell asleep with a smart watch on my wrist last night and i woke up with my upper back on it??
You probably moved to much while sleeping

whats a Monad
isnt that a Monoid in the catagory of endofunctors
whatever the hell that means
It's a burrito

is there any servers similar to this, but for physics?
Yes check #old-network
@tame egret oioi
I got banned from the physics server.
so how does that happen?
You must've been a bozon
@solar hawk so what is it that llvm is making easy for you
Functions and arrays
And importing c functions and stuff
Like I have printf from cstdio
And it’s effortless to set that up
ah, yeah having c interop is essential
since you typically need it to interact with the os
And instead of compiling by making a big string the the x86, I use the LLVM functions
Which is nice and less shitty
Ye
Like once I finish a parser and even just the basic compiler I will be able to do a lot in the language
Once I was done with the other you couldn’t do much stuff, and I had to implement arrays/vectors myself
you know, Go actually did raw syscalls on macos despite the raw syscall interface not being stable, and apple broke Go one time when they updated the os for that reason
Go really hates interop with C and avoids it when they can
even if it means relying on unstable apis lol
you don’t need it on Linux though because the syscall interface is stable I think
tbh you will probably know more about this stuff than me soon enough. in fact you kind of already do
never worked on compilers before
Idk go
Based
The server is too boring for me to get banned sadly
you could probably learn it in a weekend if you wanted to
very simple language
priorities indeed
But yeah if w3schools had a Go page which it probably does it would be a quick learn
good luck
Fr bruh that entire thing was a mess
Partitioning matrices is a mess
every 5 years I think working through SICP is a fantastic idea, and every time I get about 1 chapter further
I’m thinking of writing a 20 page text on the math major, intended for students finishing high school and in their first year of university wanting to know what a math major will look like
1 decade from now I will finally have the knowledge level of an MIT freshman in the 80s
Do people in this demographic have any questions about the math major that they would like addressed in such a text? I am reviewing my own high school experiences as much as possible however I think it would be good to get a broad range of questions to be able to make it the best I can
What relevant internships can math majors get during the summer?
1: What jobs can one get as a math major and the paths to get there. So not just academia, but finance (quant, actuary), software engineering, etc. Talk about both summer opportunities and full time
2: How math in college different to HS. So talk about proofs, maybe give an example or two
3: The importance of computing (it's just the reality at this point)
4: What is research and who can do it and how can someone do it / engage with it (REUs, Seminars, reading groups, etc)
5: How hard is the major (don't sugarcoat but don't scare em)
that's just off the top of my head
How to not make math your entire personality
Awesome thank you muchly. I’m planning on telling a story of each of the main subjects in the math major as to hopefully give an idea on what type of content you will study
This will hopefully give an idea of how pure math and applied math are different and let you imagine how proofs will work
@ Sharp
😆
I’m not writing a textbook so I am not going to write proofs for everything, I am telling a story.
But do you think a few proofs would be good to show?
Just to show how later year proofs should look?
sqrt(2) is irrational is a classic
no no not later year, they should be understandable to high schoolers
When I stay later year proofs I mean like some basic real analysis proofs and abstract algebra proofs
Algebra is tricky because you need definitions
Yeah hopefully an answer to whether I include any proofs will become clearer as I write
But please continue to ask more questions the more input, the better I can adapt and write
Original post.
You could give irrationality of root 2 as a demonstration of what proofs look like in general
And then when you're giving subject specific stuff, talk about the types of questions that will be answered
Hey @velvet dagger how is ur research going?
But without answering them. This gives some semblance of suspense and it allows you to advertise subjects for which actually proving any theorem would need too much technology to be worth including
I don't think you should give proofs at this level
the goal should be give a flavor of what majoring in math is
and answer any concerns
Going alright! I've got my problem settled finally 😛
related to bruhat tits building, u were saying last time
Yeah okay I was thinking about asking thought provoking questions
Also do Americans learn calculus in high school?
Apparently among all high school graduates, 15%
Among people interested in math and science, that number probably grows
I want to write it assuming some calculus
Because I feel like if you want to take a math major you will have taken calculus in high school
I would say that's probably true but not categorically so
Also relevant question is, how much calculus
Just basic differentiation and maybe integration
i was able to explain euler characterlistic to my non math friends. u can definitely do some cw complexes in 20 pages
I can probably do it with just differentiation
I mean I wouldn't really explain CW complexes unless there's a cool fact you can arrive at
CW complex = 3D puzzle
The thing when you're doing stuff for a general audience is, you don't wanna think of yourself as an educator so much as an entertainer
euler characteristic as an invariant sounded cool to them
Sure but you're not doing anything with the CW structure, just talk about triangulating the sphere and maybe the torus
And demonstrate that oh if we subdivide even more the Euler char doesn't change :0
Avoid technical definitions when you're taking on the entertainer role unless you're gonna do something with them
Yeah I plan on talking about concepts rather than definitions
I guess logically that means I can’t do any proofs
But yeah you can talk about counting problems via group theory. Oh algebra answers blah about the Rubik's cube!
Exactly what I was thinking
I would say have the proof bit separate from the subject matter stuff
For instance, you can say oh in math you actually prove things compared to before. For instance, you might've always been told that sqrt(2) is irrational... But why? :0000
And then when you're talking about algebra, you just say oh you're studying structure and symmetry, and you can answer questions like xyz
I am also beginning the text with an explanation of what studying math is
what is it
Pain
i like that
vsauce music
I begin with a placeholder of “math is the study of objects and how they relate to each other” and then I use examples of operations we’ve studied in school to explain how these correspond to sets and maps
I want to try introduce and incorporate some mathematical language like ‘set’ and ‘function’ or ‘map’
that just gets ppl bored no?
do sth geometrical. ask them if the universe was donut shaped, what could we do to figure it out
Well maybe. I dont want mathematical jargon to be ubiquitous throughout
But introducing some words might be good
I explain how we can relate numbers with addition, we can relate shapes using reflections and symmetries, we can relate functions using derivatives
And each subject in mathematics looks at a mathematical object and looks at ways to relate them
And then I say the mathematical objects we think of as a set and we can relate sets using maps or functions
I wanted to assume basic calculus because I can utilise more examples and tell the story better
The concept sounds cool
Do you know what the difference is between finding an angle between a vector and a plane and finding an acute angle between a vector and a plane?
I’m hoping the final product is too
When have you started working on it?
I started last night I wrote some stuff
I want to make it as short as possible but informative so that people get a good insight into a math major
The dedication is real for math
its a blessing what you are doing
Some underestimate the major too LMAOO
Well I remember starting uni not wanting to do pure math because it wasn’t applicable and because it was proofs
But I realised now that I’ve done it I was just prejudiced
Because I was very uninformed about what it looked like
Every person needs a good teacher or a good introduction to spark interest
Well I’m still technically in it but I’m in my third year but I’ve done pretty much every subject
Only one I haven’t really done is complex analysis
You have that teachers heart in you :D
Haha thank you
$(1-1)-1 \neq 1- (1-1)$
Brandon H#1125
Why
How would I even use this information?
surprise surprise, subtraction is not associative
Group theory has left the chat
in fact you could say it is anti-associative, idk if that’s a term that has been coined before
@gentle tapir a=b=1/2, c=4 would be a counterexample
yes i see
thank you
I'm tryin to figure out how df he pinged you 👀
Np, I will reply to you if I can prove the converse direction
okay,
actually i was trying on JBMO 2014 p3
and i areived to this hoping i could prove it lol
Hey if you have 3 numbers 4,5,6 and you want to find the number of ways you can make a 3 digit numeber out of them while only using each number once there will be 3! such numbers? or 3!/2
Never mind, converse is also wrong, a=1/4, b=c=2 would be a counterexample of the converse direction too
I see
it will be 3!
aa yup right
Can you help me with the Dice PnC problem?
In the help section
i don't know if i can
i'll see
Im getting 48 but the answer is 24..
which one ?
Unconventional dice are to be designed such that the six faces are marked with numbers from 1 to 6 with 1 and 2 appearing on opposite faces. Further, each face is colored either red or yellow with opposite faces always of the same color. Two dice are considered to have the same design if one of them can be rotated to obtain a dice that has the same numbers and colors on the corresponding faces as the other one. Find the number of distinct dice that can be designed.
having a dice with only one color isn't considered, right ?
It is
Ook
2 opposite faces are the same color
the opposite faces are (1-6);(2-5);(3-4)
and we have 2 colors red and yellow
so the number of distinct dice that can be designed is : 2³=8
1 and 2 are on opposite sides
and if we fix 3
then 4,5,6 can have 3! ways of arrangement
so it should me 6*8=48
but its 24!!
Looks correct, I got 48 too…
Its 24 tho
in the answer key
What rotation axis are we missing?
it's a combinaison
3!/2
cuz we don't need order
like you counted every two opposite faces twice
Can’t be 24. If you color 3,4,5,6with all same colors, this is already ((4!)/4)(2)(2)=24
So the answer they gave must be wrong
theres more than 1k 40 year old above average mathemeticians getting 24 tho
Cant rotate
but when you bruteforce it you get 24
bro no one be bruteforcin a pnc question 💀 🗿
💀😂
when you permutat this you get:
(3-4)(5-6)
(3-4)(5-6)
(3-5)(4-6)
(3-5)(6-4)
(3-6)(4-5)
(3-6)(5-4)
there's a repitition
theres 6 cases still
And we are counting the order too
3456 is not 3465
why ?
if you rotate the dice 180°
you get the same dice
or no 😶
ye but 1 and 2 will change too
yup true

it's fine
gym class is boring
I don't gym
same
so i can't relate
we are just having an assignment with a group
👍
: D
One question, what is a series for you?
same but I want to take it since I'm applying for a program
probably it's one of these programs I'm interested in
math and cs
????
I wasn't talking to you lmao
I don't like it mainly because of the old teacher
he's boring
