Seems slightly contradictory?

Im simply requesting for you to ask for help in the appropriate channels

My question from 10 years ago is still yet to be answered

#

I have a really weird question that, may or may not relate to math

#

I have no clue

#

I am here from a videogame discord, and there's currently a lot of theorizing in the community. I'm researching a recurring type of shape that lends itself to a lot of symbolism but I am not sure where the type of shape is from.

#

I feel like it's a mathematical shape but I'm not certain, it looks erratic

#

But somebody else agreed it looked vaguely mathematical

#

So I was wondering if any here could verify if it is something mathematics related or not

woven whale
#

what people?

#

like, if you wanna host a talk, then you can contact the mods

#

it's not like the mods are actively stopping people from hosting talks

willow moon
#

No I thought the community could host regular talks

#

not me i dont really have the knowledge yet (which is why i think these talks are so captivating n people can benefit a lot from them)

#

I think it'd be a cool thing to have it routinely

willow moon
woven whale
#

whom are we gonna invite

willow moon
#

i'm not very well-versed with who's who in the community so I can't really give an answer. I'm sure the mods know better on who's the expert on what. Maybe them

woven whale
#

finding an appropriate topic is also very difficult

willow moon
#

Well I'm sure the details could be figured out later.

#

again this is just a suggestion

#

it's not like I already have every little detail in mind

woven whale
#

imo suggestions don't really help if they are not thought out

#

like I agree that it could be cool to have regular talks

#

but it's just very hard to make that happen

#

I could host a talk on newton okounkov bodies in a couple of months but I doubt that anyone would want to hear it sotrue

willow moon
#

Well I disagree. Suggestions are starting points and you don't need every single detail thought out, especially if you are not in a place of authority (i.e. being a moderator/admin) or if you don't precisely know the climate/details of the community. I've been in the server for a long time, yes, but I haven't interacted that much with the people here to know who's the expert on what, nor is my knowledge sufficient to distinguish what topics are appropriate for the general audience of this server.

#

That's why it's an idea

surreal sapphire
#

we cant really force people to give talks

#

its one of the long term goals to have a more active talk structure

#

but its very hard with how most of the users here are highschool students

vast surge
#

I will give a talk once I know enough math to give an interesting talk

surreal sapphire
#

see you tomorrow

vast surge
#

Actually wait I'll give a talk after I graduate from undergrad. That's in like 5 weeks or something.

surreal sapphire
#

but yeah if you have ideas how to get more people to host talks, hit me up lol

#

in general my reply is "be the change you want to see"

#

(i do not follow this advice myself)

willow moon
# surreal sapphire we cant really force people to give talks

I wasn't thinking of 'forcing' them to give talks, more like making a list of upcoming talks with various topics and asking people with knowledge of these topics to give talks (volunteering). However the demographic issue is a valid concern I agree.

surreal sapphire
#

we have no upcoming talks 😭

willow moon
vast surge
#

Maybe some kind of a reward system? Like, a special coloured role for people who have given n talks, for some positive integer n?

vast surge
woven whale
#

0 is positive in french sotrue

vast surge
#

I meant, the mods pick some n. I was thinking in the 3-5 range, and the role would be called maybe something like "frequent presenter".

surreal sapphire
#

i dont know if the intersection of people who want colored roles and people who we want to give talks is that big

#

but its worth considering (at some point...)

woven whale
#

it contains me sotrue

vast surge
#

Purple is nitro, blue is active/very active/mod, yellow is honorable, green is helper

#

Maybe orange or red?

willow moon
#

Pretty good idea actually

surreal sapphire
#

i think we will discuss what color to paint the shack last

surreal sapphire
vast surge
#

Maybe also periodically putting out a call for abstracts

#

Like, ping @ everyone or @ talks and say, "we're looking for people interested in giving talks please consider giving a talk"

surreal sapphire
#

didnt want to make it sound like im shooting down your idea

#

its worth considering something like this

#

though we wont ping everyone

vast surge
#

Too many random highschool students in this server

#

That makes sense

#

Maybe @ advanced or @ grad+?

#

To quality-control

winter shore
#

@ talks sounds cool, like a lecture on certain subjects. And maybe you could give them for all levels (late highschool->college grad).

Students will explore questions such as, “What happens when the angles of a triangle no longer sum to 180 degrees?” or “what does it mean to be a straight line?”. Students will imagine living in hyperbolic or spherical space, discovering for themselves the challenges presented by these unfamiliar geometries. By the end of the week, we will understand tilings and students will create their own hyperbolic and spherical art to take home.

There's a learning curve to everything. Linux is WAY more flexible than windows and you can, in principle, mould it into whtever the hell u desire. With windows, all you get is what they give u.

torn willow
#

Can't you do some shenanigans with windows registry

#

So it's technically possible to customize Windows, I think

regal night
neat lintel
#

i just can type stuff in my terminal and i get whatever i want

#

on linux mint that i am using, you can use the software manager

#

so there's also GUI and stuff in case u don't know how to use the terminal

surreal sapphire
#

linux in general gives you more tools to control your computer

#

windows has very big issues with like

#

there are a dozen menus that all do the same thing

#

and some of them havent been updated since 1995

#

so finding the correct thing to click is really hard and nobody really knows how it works

#

linux is pretty simple

#

and interacting with the terminal is very simple

#

and if you need help you can just copy paste commands from a help site into terminal

#

instead of having to read page long instructions on how to navigate obscure menus

stuck shoal

Bro wrote an essay damn

surreal sapphire

linux's "everything is a text file" is much better

but the windows registry is just filled with junk

bright hill
#

I do think I'm fairly tech savvy so I might be biased

#

But, like, i think the biggest advantage windows has is its software packaging is much easier to use

#

You literally just click next to install most programs

river moon
#

I would say even while being technologically literate I had no clue my linux install had no internet, the GUI was hard to navigate and solutions online had nothing in common with my problem (I was looking for solution as to why I can't install any package)

#

it was only when I tried to open the browser was when I realized

neat lintel
surreal sapphire
#

this is literally the worst downside of windows

bright hill
surreal sapphire
#

you have to first find software (often navigate sketchy websites), uncheck boxes that want to install random toolbars and be careful to not install too much

#

thats why stuff like ninite exists

#

additionally the updating of software is horrible

bright hill
surreal sapphire
#

you have to update everything individually

#

on linux machines you just type the equivalent of install software

#

or click some install button if you have a software center

#

windows tried to steal this idea with the windows shop

#

but who uses that?

surreal sapphire
#

in general linux requires some minimal learning of the terminal and standard shell commands

neat lintel
#

i probably used it 1 time in each installation
to install WSL

surreal sapphire
#

but i dont think this is harder than learning what buttons to press

#

its just that you probably grew up with windows

bright hill
#

You also have to deal with different packaging methods

#

Like appimmage

surreal sapphire
#

this is why i use arch sotrue

#

i dunno what kind of obscure programs you install

learning what buttons to press effectively makes windows sound like a good thing after you do that, just learn what buttons to press in order to fix the problem sotrue

i dont think this is valid criticism though

everything will just work

the more valid concern here is that some developers do not support linux (properly)

and only offer windows versions of software

#

but you cant blame linux for that

#

this is overall the biggest linux issue because it extends to drivers, which are kinda essential for your computer to function correctly

bright hill
#

I'm just saying that the only possible way, in my experience, where Linux can be less easy to use than windows is when installing software

surreal sapphire
#

i just dont think thats true at all lol

your average user just clicks on "software center" or whatever and finds every piece of software they will ever need to install with a single click

Try to solve different kinds of problems. Instead of just doing the millionth row reduction, play around and see if you can see a difference between row reducing an invertible and a non-invertible matrix, for example. See if you can find, out in the wild, some examples of things that are actually secretly vector spaces (for instance, given a field k, the polynomial ring k[x] is an infinite-dimensional vector space over k). See if you can find some things that are not vector spaces, and identify where they fail to be vector spaces. Find a basis for R as a vector space over Q.

#

This sort of thing takes time and energy and effort, but it's way more efficient for learning than just doing row reduction after row reduction after row reduction until you've memorized Gauss's algorithm.

From cave drawings to photos, pictures can often say more than words alone. This is one reason why people use emojis. Emojis are small pictures often used in text messages and email. They are used to show a feeling or idea. These little pictures of faces, objects, and animals got their start in Japan. The word emoji comes from the Japanese words for "picture" and "character."
In the 1990s, it took a long time to write text messages on the first cell phones. A Japanese man named Shigetaka Kurita thought it would be faster and easier to send messages using pictures. Instead of typing "It is sunny today," you could just use a picture of the sun. Kurita came up with 176 digital pictures that became the first emojis. There were hearts, happy and sad faces, and pictures showing different kinds of weather. The emojis were fast to type and easy to understand. They could also add extra information about how the writer was feeling.
Emojis were an instant hit. People loved using emojis so much that they asked for new ones to be made. Now, there are thousands of different emojis, including ones for pizza, basketball, and animals.
Using pictures in messages can carry ideas across the world. Even people who do not speak the same language can communicate with emojis. A smiling face means happy thoughts whether you speak English or Japanese!

As for the basis of $\mathbb{R}$ as a vector space over $\mathbb{Q}$ , I thought about that question before, but I could not have solved it back then (because I simply did not know the required mathematical machineries) and just used MSE. Nonetheless, I still remember the gist of the argument.

Since $\mathbb{R}$ is uncountable and $\mathbb{Q}$ is countable, it follows that $\mathbb{R}$ is an infinite-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{Q}$ ; otherwise, for some natural number $n$ , $\mathbb{R}$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Q}^n$ , but $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is countable (because $\mathbb{Q}$ is countable, and because the Cartesian product of countable sets is also countable), and thus, the uncountable nature of $\mathbb{R}$ is contradicted. As for the existence of a basis of $\mathbb{R}$ as a vector space over $\mathbb{Q}$ , I heard that I need to use some transfinite set theory, but I am not familiar with advanced set theory yet.
