We've added a new channel under the Advanced Mathematics section for advice regarding any bureaucracy involved in applications for graduate programs, postgraduate programs, grants applications, etc. Going forward please keep these topics within #graduate-applications — the channel is accessible like all other channels in the Advanced Mathematics section. Note that "chanceme's" (posting your grades, resume, etc) is strictly prohibited — instead the channel is for general advice.

Survey Results
With considerable delay, we have finally finished processing the results of the Mathematics Server User Survey! See the attachment for some pretty graphs, and responses for a lot of the feedback.
The Helper role is changing
This role has been around since essentially the beginning of the server, and it was never quite clear how the role should be assigned, and whether it means a particular level of expertise. Some hesitated to ask for it because they did not think they were good enough, others picked it up solely for the color.
There are now two roles:
● <@&286206848099549185> is a self-assignable pingable role, meaning anyone can select this role to be pinged about problems that went unsolved for a while. It can be assigned (or un-assigned!) in #info.
● <@&1022875670466023534> is a role that signifies expertise. It is assigned to those who are consistently active in the Math Help section.
Stay tuned for more changes to the Math Help section in the near future!
<@&286206848099549185> <@&1022875670466023534> We’re trying out using a new Discord feature, a forum channel for math help. Each asker can use a separate post (thread) for their question, and posts are categorized with tags. For more info and instructions see #1026808241067405312. If you have any feedback, you can post it in #1026816650001002517.
Currently the old channel-based system is still running in parallel, and the instructions are still available in #❓how-to-get-help.
DMs Offering Paid Services
Hello,
Recently, we've been getting reports of users being DMed advertisements for various paid services, such as tutoring and assignment completion. These services are unaffiliated with our server, and are almost definitely a scam. You will have no recourse if you offer any money or financial information to them.
We have reason to believe that some services are using compromised/"botted" accounts to spam DMs. To stay safe, avoid clicking any links or joining any servers they send, and certainly do not scan any QR codes.
Our server is not responsible for any consequences of following DM links, but — since advertising is against server rules — we do ask you to report such messages by DMing @river flame a screenshot and the advertiser's user ID. We recommend you do not engage with them in any way.
Thank you and stay safe.
—
If you do get such a DM and it's explicitly advertising a server, we ask that you report it through Discord's reporting feature, if you feel comfortable doing so. Visit the link https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000029731 and fill out the boxes as required. Make sure to link the DM in which the server is advertising itself, and note that the DM you received was unsolicited and unprompted. (To be clear, only send a report if YOU PERSONALLY received such a DM; duplicate reports do not help Discord.)
It looks like close to @everyone in the server just received such an ad. The mod team are aware of the raid and we do not need more reports of the activity right now. We're trying to figure out how to deal with it, but more reports will not help us.
It happened again. We've already reported it to Discord and we are actively dealing with it; do not send us more reports.
Also, do not join their server, give them any money, scan any QR codes, etc. There is simply no legitimate way to set up a botnet on Discord, so the fact that they did so indicates they are scammers and account-stealers.
(As an aside, we are looking into ways to prevent this in the future, but the best way to stop it is for users to stop falling for these scams.)
We're going to be experimenting with some role icons for pronouns right now; anything you see is subject to get changed, reworked, and scrapped, and don't be surprised to see the icons change frequently.
If you want to self-assign a pronoun role, use the /roles command. I stress that these are entirely optional and do not need to be taken if you do not want one.
Also, a quick poll: How should pronoun roles be capitalized?
🇦: Uppercase (She/Her)
🇧: Lowercase (she/her)
🇨: Mixed case (She/her)
React to vote.
Seems that option 🇧 has won out by a decent margin. I'll continue to monitor the votes but for now I'll change the roles to use lowercase.
Hey <@&738418816756875375>! Please take a moment to assign your education level: you can read the descriptions and assign them in #info. In the near future we will be removing the "Advanced" role and instead will be using the education level roles for access to advanced channels.
Update: due to y'all hammering the "Manage Roles" interface so hard, the bot's ability to set roles has been ratelimited, and the "interactions" are "timing out". Your selected roles will still be set in due time.
New applied mathematics channels
We have introduced three new channels to the advanced category exclusively for applied mathematics discussion. These are: #numerical-analysis, #optimization, and #modeling. Please read the descriptions of each channel to get an idea for the types of content and discussion we’d like to see there.
We've been hit by another DM scam raid employing a botnet to advertise a (likely fraudulent) academic service. We do not need further ModMail reports at this time; if you wish to report them, report the server to Discord, not us.
I repeat my prior advice: do not join their server, give them any money, scan any QR codes, etc. There is simply no legitimate way to set up a botnet on Discord, so the fact that they did so indicates they are scammers and account-stealers. The service in question has already shown that it is willing to steal accounts; do not trust them with your personal or financial information.
Channels & Roles
You can now assign channels and roles using id:customize. Pick a preset by answering a few questions, or add your favorite channels one by one!
Regarding the Voice Chat Channels
Greetings, all.
Over the past couple years, the Mathematics Discord has grown in size and rapport quite quickly, even becoming a Discord Partner. We are quite happy with this growth, but as the server gets larger, we have to make more compromises in order to make it possible to efficiently moderate and to cultivate the server culture we desire. We have avoided restrictions that we felt would be overly restrictive on discussions: we have not disabled external embeds or enforced slowmode, for example, since we feel that, even if those increase the moderation burden, they are (currently) manageable and changing the policy would be negative on discussion quality. Our goal has always been to serve more as "caretakers"; we don't want to "arcade-ify" the server, or to enforce restrictions that make it feel like we're constantly breathing down your necks, but we do want to create a positive and inclusive server culture.
With that said, we have recently come to a difficult decision: we will be closing the public voice chat (VC) channels indefinitely.
This decision is inspired by concerns both practical and philosophical. We have largely been relying on trusted users in order to manage VC channels when moderators aren't listening, and while this has mostly worked well, various incidents as the server has grown in size have made us uncomfortable giving out this blanket trust (for example, receiving contradictory accounts from said trusted users). Moreover, VC is a place where users can be isolated from the rest of the server, and is an environment where effective moderation logging is very difficult — and we want to avoid methods of logging that we view as infringements on privacy, such as discreetly recording VC conversations. In other words, VC has become a place in the server which we can control neither proactively nor reactively, and which is cut off from the server at large in such a way that potentially allows for troubling behaviour — racism, grooming, etc. — that we currently don't have the tools to mitigate.
We wish for this to be a temporary change until we find a better way to manage the public VC. To be honest, we hate to suspend a part of the server that has developed its own sort of community. However, we also know that much of this VC community has branched off into side-servers and whatnot, and so our hope is that that group will be able to find alternative places for mathematical voice conversations. The suspension of these channels is not meant to be an indictment of this community; if anything, it is a confession of our own failure as a moderation team to find a way to moderate this space. We have attempted to seek out users from the VC community that we could recruit onto the moderation team for feedback, but for various reasons, we have been unable to identify a good candidate.
We do understand that there are users who prefer to give and receive mathematics help via voice chat and/or video. We are looking towards a way to accomodate you, and are open to suggestions (please DM ModMail if you wish to give any well-thought-out feedback). Furthermore, we will continue trying to find ways we can manage VC as a moderation team.
We plan to close the VC channels a few hours from now. I stress that this decision is a pragmatic one, where we are recognizing the limits of our current moderation capacity, rather than a "punishment" for recent incidents or what-have-you. Our sincerest apologies to those who this impacts.
Thank you for your time.
Rolling this out. Should now be implemented.
Because apparently this needs to be said:
Do not use ChatGPT, or any other AI software, to answer people's questions. If we have strong reason to suspect you of doing so, we will immediately ban.
(For what it's worth, this is covered under our existing rules wrt spam, giving false information, being unhelpful in help channels, among others — and we have already banned multiple users for it. Just clarifying the policy.)
Just an FYI:
Multiple members of our server have gotten DMed about a "Discord math bot" or something similar. We have reason to believe this bot is using compromised accounts to advertise its services. It is unlikely a legitimate service would choose to advertise itself in this way. These messages often attempt to improve their apparent legitimacy by including a YouTube video, a Github link, or something similar. Do not trust any unsolicited DMs you receive, especially if they make you click a link, download software, or authorize an account.
If you get any such scam messages, please DM @river flame with a screenshot + the user's name and numerical Discord ID.
Included for reference is a common format that these messages take. You should be able to identify multiple suspicious things about this DM — for example, the fact that it links directly to bot authorization rather than a website with more info, or the incredibly vague and overambitious claims ("any math problem"? "95% of the curriculum"? what curriculum?), or the sketchy video. And of course, the most suspicious thing is that the DM was sent completely unsolicited from a random account to a random user — you should never trust random DMs, ever.
I stress that not every spammer/scammer will have a DM that looks like this. This image is provided purely so that you can study it and identify common red flags and tactics used by them.
We've disabled embeds in certain channels (e.g. #discussion ) for new users. This is intended to redirect image posts towards appropriate spaces (questions to help channels, memes to #chill , and so on) and to reduce the amount of disruptive embeds posted.
Certain roles, such as the activity roles, will re-enable embeds in these channels. If you have a relevant image/video/etc. that you'd like to post, but don't have embed permissions, feel free to send a link instead.
(To be clear, this change is liable to be adjusted or scrapped in the future, based on how effective it is. We don't want to restrain what you can do too much — we don't want an atmosphere where it feels like mods are constantly breathing down your neck — but we do want to improve server usability. Bear with us.)
Hello,
With the recent outbreak of conflict between the Israeli state and Palestinian/Lebanese militants, described by many sources as a "state of war", we have noticed an uptick in discussion of this matter on the server. The circumstances of this conflict are incredibly complex and nuanced, with many competing interests and a long historical record that many experts dedicate their lives to trying to resolve — to little success, unfortunately, given the tragedies currently befalling the region.
While we do not forbid political discussions on this server, the moderation team would like to remind you to not be explicitly argumentative and to prevent conversations from getting too heated. If we feel like you are "baiting a response" or otherwise being provocative or inflammatory, we may ask you to stop or issue punishments.
We do forbid any explicit calls for hatred, violence, or genocide, including explicit and direct support for any groups that justify violence on genocidal grounds. In particular, avoid apologetics for any violent action by any parties involved. Even if you believe these actions may be justified by some external factors, this Discord server is not an appropriate place to resolve such ethical issues, and the moderation team is not confident in our abilities to distinguish between "pragmatic" and hateful rhetoric. Therefore, we will not permit any calls for or defenses of violent action.
In general, if you have "an agenda" that you'd like to push, we'd recommend you find other places to do it. If we get the impression that you are intentionally starting, continuing, or escalating arguments, we will not permit you on the server. If we feel you aren't handling the situation with the nuance or gravitas it deserves, we may force you to drop the topic or otherwise issue disciplinary action. You can (and should!) express sympathy towards those affected.
The moderation team reserves the right to interfere and end any political conversation at any time without reason. If we feel like these discussions continue being problematic, we may ban the topic altogether, as we did for Russia-Ukraine.
We understand that emotions run high during these situations and will be lenient where possible, but we wish to preserve discussion quality, allow these complex issues to be handled in a more appropriate forum, and ensure that members of this server don't feel alienated or singled-out by rhetoric or hate.
We express our deepest sympathy for the victims of this violence and of the broader tensions and conflicts in the region, as well as with their families and peers.
Due to the continued growth of the server, we're expanding the moderation team significantly to meet demand. For internal administrative reasons, we've restructured the staff roles to reflect this influx. This should have no effect on most users. (You may notice a colour change for existing moderators.)
FYI: If you need moderator assistance, you can continue to DM @river flame or ping <@&268886789983436800> . The <@&489371166058872832> role is not pingable, and pinging Moderators will contact the Senior Moderators as well.
Joke Threads in Advanced Channels
Due to low-quality discussion, off-topic behaviour, moderation concerns, and general immaturity, we are cracking down on "joke/gimmick threads" in the advanced section.
For now, we are tolerating general "off-topic" threads (namely algechill) and specifically going after substanceless joke threads. However, if similar issues arise in these, we may act similarly.
If you want to shitpost, please do it in #chill .
FYI: "Paid Moderator" Scams
We have been hit by a wave of bots recently, spamming an invite link to a server (both in this server and in DMs) claiming they are recruiting "paid moderators". These are scams to get your Discord account and/or financial information. No one is going to pay you to moderate their Discord server. The accounts spamming these links are all stolen and botted.
Do not click these links, and certainly do not give them any information of yours or scan any QR codes. Please ping Moderators if you see any such scammers.
[Footnote: If you're interested in getting paid for online service moderation, look into "community manager" listings on legitimate job websites. Expect them to require a degree in a related field or some public relations experience. No one genuine will recruit for such positions on Discord itself.]
General Interests Forum
We are trialing a new #1207411538650992701 forum, which will have threads for specific topics popular among our members. Discussing these topics in the general channels is still allowed, but we hope to provide a more dedicated space for them.
Currently these threads will be limited to the existing three, though after a short period we may revise the topic list.
The channel will have the same expectations and rules as the existing discussion channels, and off-topic discussions may be stopped or redirected at moderator discretion.
"ask pronouns" Role Icon Colour
To address concerns about <@&1047243319744397334> having a similar icon colour to <@&1047243315935969371> , we have changed the icon colour for <@&1047243319744397334> from light green to purple. This colour was chosen taking into account accessibility (e.g. different monitors, light/dark mode, colourblind accessibility) while trying to stay consistent with the aesthetic character of the other roles. Hopefully, this new purple is more immediately visible without being distracting.
Also, we made the pronoun roles a touch bigger so they're a tad bit more noticeable, especially on smaller screens.
Hey folks. As of today, this server has reached 200k members!
The moderation team typically avoids paying too much attention to these sorts of metrics, but I sincerely hope we have been able to create an informative and enjoyable server experience for you all.
April Fools!
We've put together a little game for you, in the spirit of the first. Whohas the new role?
You know what they say about red herrings... err, wormings?
(the worms are unrelated to the game)
Hint: search the first letters and you will see whohas the solution
Moratorium on Discussion of the Israel-Hamas War
Hello all,
We are imposing a server-wide moratorium on discussions related to the ongoing Israel–Hamas war, as well as discussion of the broader Israeli–Palestinian conflict, within this server. This includes messages, threads, links, jokes, memes, and any other form of discourse.
The decision to pause these discussions is not taken lightly. We recognise the importance of this topic; however, the complex historical, cultural, and geopolitical sensitivities involved demand a level of discussion that goes beyond our capacity as moderators of a mathematics Discord server to uphold. Our server is committed to creating a supportive environment, and we believe that these discussions require a specialised setting that is better equipped to handle them with the requisite depth and sensitivity.
We also want to clearly state that we do not express support for any military or militant actions, whether by the IDF or Hamas, and we unequivocally condemn any messages or content that advocate for violence against civilians. Our support is for the safety of all citizens, both in Israel and Palestine, as well as those affected internationally.
For those who wish to engage deeply with these issues, we encourage you to seek out platforms that are equipped to facilitate these discussions. Factual information that intersects with usual topics of discussion may be mentioned briefly; naturally, the presence of large protests on university campuses will impact many of our users. Nevertheless, we will take actions as necessary to prevent these from evolving into broader political debates.
Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other. For those directly affected by these tragedies, please know that the server remains a safe space and that all are welcome in our community.
Advanced Role Removed
The Advanced role has long been deprecated in favor of the Undergraduate Math and Postgraduate Math roles, but we have finally removed it from the server. If this change has resulted in you losing access to typing in the Advanced Mathematics section of the server, please take either of the Undergraduate Math or Postgraduate Math role by pressing the "Manage roles" button in #info. If you choose the Postgraduate Math role, we ask that you provide a brief description of your mathematical fields of interest and textbooks/papers you've read recently to prevent against spam requests of the role. Otherwise, the Undergraduate Math role requires no such application. Thank you, and sorry for any inconveniences!
Theoretical Computer Science Channel
Hello,
We recently added #theoretical-cs , a channel dedicated to the discussion of advanced theoretical computer science. Please read the channel description for information on what content is appropriate for that channel. Notably, we are only interested in covering the more mathematical parts of computer science, such as complexity theory, cryptography, automated theorem proving, coding theory, and related topics. We are not a computer science or programming server, and are not interested in offering programming help or covering non-theoretical CS, so please do not use the channel to discuss basic algorithms, data structures, software development, or basic AI/ML; such conversations may be more appropriate for #1213610885277421588 .
Topics like numerical analysis and computability theory, which already fit into existing channels such as #numerical-analysis and #foundations , can still be posted in those channels, but if their discussion significantly intersects with computer science, they are also potentially appropriate for #theoretical-cs . Please use your judgment to determine the best fit, and be respectful of the local "culture" of each channel.
As with every advanced channel, using #theoretical-cs requires the Undergraduate Math or Postgraduate Math roles. Please use the "Channels & Roles" section at the top of the sidebar to assign a role if one of these accurately describes your mathematics education level. We may rename these roles in the future to reflect the slightly expanded scope of the server beyond just "math". Remember that we moderate the advanced channels more strictly than the rest of the server and may revoke your access if you misuse them.
While computer science is not the primary purpose of this server, there are undeniably overlapping interests, and we'd be interested in hearing your feedback on how we can serve it better going forward. Feel free to send such feedback to @river flame or, for those with access, in the Meta section of the server.
Hi,
We've been targeted by yet another wave of scambots. I would like to remind you once again to check all links diligently before following them, and never insert any information (personal, account, financial, etc.) on a website you got to via Discord. Certainly do not download anything from a link you followed.
No one on Discord is going to give you $50 on Steam for free, or let you in on the ground floor of some revolutionary cryptocurrency project. In the best case, you will lose your social media accounts; more likely, you will have your bank account drained.
This applies even to messages sent by users who you are familar with and trust. These scams might seem ridiculous, but the bots wouldn't be targeting this server if people didn't fall for them — and then their accounts get taken over and used to perpetuate the scam. Your "friend" sending you their "new game demo" is probably a scammer who stole their account, and is now trying to steal yours in the same way.
Stay safe, and feel free to report scammers by DMing @river flame or pinging <@&268886789983436800> .

Moratorium on Discussion of the India–Pakistan Conflict
Hello all,
In light of the recent escalation in military tensions between India and Pakistan, we are instituting a server-wide moratorium on discussions pertaining to the conflict. This encompasses all forms of discourse, including messages, threads, links, jokes, memes, and any related content.
This decision is consistency with our prior moratoria on discussions of international conflicts. Our guiding purpose as a server has always been, and shall continue to be, to maintain a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals from all nationalities and backgrounds can engage in casual and/or mathematical discussion without the added strain of seeing or being dragged into geopolitical debates. The complexities of geopolitics, particularly those pertaining to international conflicts, necessitate a level of discussion that extends beyond both the scope and the purpose of this server.
We unequivocally condemn any content that advocates violence against civilians or any other group. We wish only for the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by these events.
For those seeking to engage in discussions about this conflict, we as always encourage you to opt for platforms better equipped to handle such topics with the necessary depth, nuance, and sensitivity.
Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other. Our community remains a welcoming space for all, and we stand in solidarity with all individuals of all nations who are impacted by these events.
An informal poll to gauge opinion: What are your thoughts on the fancy glow/gradient effect on roles like <@&268886789983436800> / <@&1328097118644338779> ? Please use reactions to answer.
(Note: You may need to update your Discord to see them)
❤️ I like them, and would like to see more roles have them
👍 I like them, but would prefer they stay fairly exclusive
🤷 I am neutral on them
🚫 I dislike them, and would rather the server not have them
🕴️ I cannot see them or otherwise cannot form an opinion
Hey,
We have a server tag now, in case you want to use it. It reads "MATH". We are still playing around with which symbol to use for it.
Interim Statement on the Discussion of International Conflict
Hello all,
As many of you are aware, we have previously issued moratoria on discussion of specific outbreaks of violence and conflict between and across nations. This has included the Russo-Ukrainian war, the Gaza war, and the India-Pakistan conflict. Individual posts concerning these events can be found in the backlog of this channel.
Regrettably, we live in turbulent times, with multiple ongoing violent conflicts across the world. However, the reason this server exists is to provide a space for discussion of mathematics, where people from all corners of the globe, of all religions and creeds, of all genders and sexualities, can feel safe and comfortable. Indeed, the foremost objective of the moderation team is to ensure that this environment is maintained for all. On a substantial proportion of internet platforms, discussion and news related to conflicts and wars are unavoidable. We do not wish this server to become such a platform, as to allow this would be to fundamentally change the nature of the safe space that we strive to cultivate.
While discussion of any individual conflict may be of academic or political interest, we cannot focus only on the forest at the expense of the trees; for the consequences of violent conflict are not simply the movements of borders on maps.
Behind every conflict are hundreds, thousands, potentially millions of individual human tragedies. Lives are irrevocably changed; families are torn apart; people are killed. Indeed, many of the members of this server are part of, directly or indirectly, one of these tragedies.
It is for this reason that, starting from today, we shall be forbidding discussion of all ongoing or recent international conflict. Until we have cemented this in a satisfactory manner within our 'official' server rules, a task which is currently underway, the contents of this paragraph shall serve as the interim rule to this end. Please note further that this overrides our existing rules and guidance concerning political discussions and related topics as they may potentially relate to discussion of ongoing conflicts.
As always - be kind to yourselves; to your family; to your friends; to each other. Stay safe and, if you will indulge me a cliché - spread love. Not hate.
A Request for Accessibility Feedback
Hello all.
If you have visual accessibility concerns related to the use of gradient roles in Discord, we are interested in hearing from you. We would appreciate if you could send a DM to @river flame at your convenience explaining what works for you or what doesn't. (Those with access can also provide feedback in the Meta section.)
This only applies to accessibility concerns, not to aesthetic preferences (e.g. "I think gradient roles are ugly"). [You can voice your aesthetic preferences here.](#changelog message) We specifically want to know how gradient roles impact the usability of the server for those who face accessibility challenges.
Some examples of gradients: <@&1328097118644338779> , <@&1384265154174386226> , <@&268886789983436800> , <@&1384269780999209091> , <@&1384258379886755923>
Changes to the Honourable role
Hello all,
You might have noticed we have just added many new Honourable users! In order to clarify the expectations of the Honourable role, we outline a new spec below. These are not an exhaustive list of the criterion for obtaining the role, but are requirements to maintain it. If you currently have the role and do not want to be subject to these expectations, please DM <@&833154869451292722> to have the role removed.
Users with the Honourable role are expected to:
- Conduct themselves with a general atmosphere of kindness,
- Not break server rules, and
- Respect server guidelines.
Of course, inconsistent slips on these expectations are acceptable; we are all human, after all. However, consistent violations will result in removal of the role. Honourable users are intended to be role models for the general user and embody the server's values.

Updated Statement and Moratorium on the Gaza Genocide
Hello all,
On May 1st 2024, we issued a server-wide moratorium on discussions related to "the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, as well as discussion of the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict".
In the time since this was issued, it has become abundantly clear that our previous moratorium is now very much out-of-date. In particular, we no longer stand by the language used in the statement that characterises the ongoing situation as a 'war' or 'conflict'. Rather, we feel it is our moral obligation to correct our language and refer to the events in a manner that reflects the actual situation on the ground.
We are, therefore, retracting our prior moratorium to reflect the reality that what is occurring in Gaza is genocide, not merely a "war" or "conflict." This is no longer a matter of political debate; rather, it is an acknowledgement of the findings of leading human rights organisations and genocide scholars. For example,
- Amnesty International
- The Israeli human rights organisations B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel
- The International Association of Genocide Scholars
- A special committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
As such, we shall now be permitting discussion of the genocide in limited and purposeful ways. This includes:
- Sharing information from human rights organisations, humanitarian agencies, and credible media sources.
- Discussing forms of solidarity, activism, and ways our members can respond.
- Acknowledging the personal impact these events have had on our members and their communities, whether they be from Palestine, Israel, or any other nation affected by these events.
Equally, other forms of discussion will remain under moratorium. While this list is not exhaustive, we will not entertain or permit e.g.:
- Debates over whether the events in Gaza constitute genocide.
- Attempts to justify or minimise violence against civilians, whether by Israel, Hamas, or any other party.
- Heated political arguments over military strategy, blame-shifting, or "whataboutism."
These conversations consistently escalate into unproductive conflict and are incompatible with the supportive environment we aim to maintain.
Our goal is not to silence grief, solidarity, or calls for justice, but to ensure that our community remains a safe and respectful space. Members should feel able to speak about the genocide and its global impact without being drawn into hostile, bad-faith argumentation. Neither should they be forced to defend either their own humanity or the human rights of others.
We affirm once again that this server stands for the safety and dignity of all peoples and against all forms of violence. To those directly affected, regardless of your ethnicity, religion, nationality, or any other background: please know you are welcome here, and that your voices matter.
Updates to Role Names
Hello all,
The server has many roles which have 'obfuscated' names. The original intent for this was that many of these roles were not deemed to be "in the public interest". Nevertheless, many active users are already aware of the general meanings of many of these roles, but may not know fully what they are and what they are for.
In the interest of transparency, we have thus decided to rename several such roles to be more descriptive of their purpose. Below is the list of roles which have been renamed; for more information on the specific meanings of each of these roles as well as how they are applied/acquired/used, please refer to the updated [ROLES section in](#info message) #info .
- ω ↦ <@&268886775999496203>
- μ ↦ <@&489371166058872832>
- χ ↦ <@&1343050991150567525>
- ⚙ ↦ <@&845920544158384178>
- ∞ ↦ <@&573123277409484808>
The @η role (which was used as part of the 2024 April Fool's ARG) has now been removed.
We have also added descriptions for several roles that were previously not documented; again, please refer [here](#info message) for the full set of changes.
Change to moderation role colours
<@&268886789983436800> and <@&1328097118644338779> are now the same colour.
This change is purely cosmetic - please continue to ping <@&268886789983436800> as usual.
Notice from Senior Moderation Regarding Discussion Channel Conduct
Hi All,
The purpose of this notice is to inform you that we will be taking stronger action against the posting of irrelevant memes and gifs in discussion.
Over the past few weeks we have received multiple complaints from the user base regarding the current state of excessive and recurring spam in discussion, both publicly and privately. The issue has involved users from across all of our community, from those who've just recently gained embed permissions, to long-standing honourables. As such, to address these complaints, and better align discussion with its purpose as a higher quality discussion space than chill, we will be increasing our moderation action against users posting irrelevant memes/gifs in discussion.
Please note that the use of embeds in ways that enhance and contribute to discussion, that text alone can not, is allowed and will not incur moderation action. By default reaction gifs and images are not considered to enhance the discussion. What we will be addressing is disruptive posting that is detached from ongoing conversation and should instead be directed to chill.
We will not be moving directly to bans or mutes for isolated incidents, and as always, moderation powers will continue to be used as a last resort, but they will be used when necessary.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Transfer of Server Ownership
Hello,
This a brief and - in many regards - unimportant announcement. Server ownership was, as of today, transferred from @marble quail to myself (@cerulean halo).
I am announcing this since, in time, people would inevitably notice this change and may find the lack of any acknowledgement peculiar.
To be clear, my intention is for the server to continue as it has under mniip for the last several years and to continue the mission of creating the most positive, productive, and friendly space that we can for anyone with an interest in mathematics.
Cheers, rat.
Update on Embeds in Discussion
Hello everyone,
Following significant community input we have reviewed the previous policy on embeds in discussion and found that it was not at all worded in a manner that conveyed our actual intent. For now, we shall not be enforcing the policy while we rewrite it to be better aligned with the needs of both the moderation team and the wider user base.
Slowmode in #discussion
Hello,
Recently, a poll was conducted among active server users as to whether they support the 5-second slowmode that is currently in place in the #discussion channel. Of those who voted in said poll, 61% voted in approval of said 5-second slowmode. This issue was then raised to the Meta Committee, all of whom voted to approve its continuation.
-# NB: Votes cast in abstention are not considered in the above.
As such, the 5-second slowmode in #discussion shall remain in-place for the foreseeable future. Depending on how this affects the channel in the medium- to long-term, the issue may be revisited.

We'll be migrating @formal karma and @river flame to a new server shortly, they'll likely be offline for about 15 minutes. Edit: Done now.
Update on the Moratorium on International Conflict
Hello everyone,
Following internal discussion, we have decided to update the previous moratorium on discussing ongoing or recent international conflicts.
Going forward, discussion of such conflicts will be treated in line with our existing rules and guidelines on political discussion, with the added understanding these these topics concern real, ongoing events, in which innocent people are being harmed or killed. As such, any discussion of international conflict is expected to reflect the gravity of these realities, and will be subject to closer moderation than other political discussion.
We recognise that the previous policy had become confusing, due to exemptions such as the Palestinian genocide, and as a result was enforced inconsistently. This update is intended to clarify expectations; however, the purpose of the server has not changed: this remains a math server, and we continue to recommend users generally avoid discussing heavy topics such as politics, as these conversations are rarely productive.
Our usual rules for discussing serious topics will continue to apply. In particular:
-
No glorification of violence. Users must not revel in the deaths or suffering of others.
-
No bigotry. Users must not use these discussions to espouse bigoted views or attack minorities.
-
Be mindful of others. Remember that other server members may be directly affected by these conflicts. Consider how your messages can impact them.
-
Moderator Discretion. As always, moderators reserve the right to shut down any conversation at any time, for any reason. We also reserve the right to reinstate a moratorium on specific conflicts if necessary.
To be clear, this update does not create an exemption from our political discussion guidelines. If anything, discussions of armed conflict will be held to a higher standard than other political discussion, given the seriousness of the subject matter and the potential for harm.
We hope this update will make our moderation policy clearer for you all, and that you will use it to have useful and productive conversations.
Both @formal karma and @river flame are currently down. While we investigate, please make use of the help forum, https://discord.com/channels/268882317391429632/1021175428326633542, (rather than help channels) and use <@&268886789983436800> pings in lieu of ModMail, as appropriate; requests requiring privacy may be DM'd to an online <@&1328097118644338779>.
Apologies for the inconvenience!
Update: Both are back up. If you find anything amiss, DM @river flame. Thank you for your patience!
Update two: Both are once again down.

Zero-Tolerance Policy on Diddy/Epstein and Related “Jokes”
-# Updated 2026-03-06
CW: This announcement references ||Child Sexual Abuse/Exploitation|| (CSA) and the terms ||paedophile/paedophilia||.
Effective immediately, the moderation team is enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on the use of terms such as:
- “diddyblud”
- “epsteinblud”
- “diddy ahh”
- “epstein ahh”
These phrases are being used to jokingly imply that another user is a paedophile. This is unacceptable. This policy extends to any and all jokes about Diddy, Epstein, paedophilia and related topics.
We do not moderate language simply because it is trendy or irritating. We are acting because CSA is an extremely serious crime that ruins millions of peoples' lives. Using references to it as a punchline - or as a way to label another user - is profoundly inappropriate and trivialises the horrifying severity of both the crime and the harm that it invariably causes.
Enforcement:
- Use of the listed terms will trigger an automatic 10-minute mute. Automatic mutes will be reviewed by the moderation team and escalated appropriately, with a minimum of 1 day.
- Any and all jokes about CSA and paedophilia will be met with a minimum of a 1 day mute, with steep escalation based on severity and number of past offences.
- Any user found to be intentionally and falsely accusing another user of paedophilia - as an insult or otherwise - will be permanently banned on first instance. If you have genuine reason to suspect another user is engaging in grooming etc., it should be raised via @river flame - not in public channels.
This is non-negotiable. Making light of CSA - as should be self-evident - is utterly and wholly unacceptable behaviour, regardless of the manner in which it is done; the moderation team will be taking harsh and immediate action against any instances of this which we identify. If you see this occurring anywhere on the server, please ping <@&268886789983436800> immediately.

Rebranding of discussion-2 to #serious-discussion
Hi everyone,
Following a recent meta proposal, we have decided to rebrand discussion-2 as #serious-discussion. Moving forward, this channel should be the go-to place to discuss more "serious" topics such as politics or religion. Our goal is to ensure that these heavier conversations, when they do occur in the server, do not dominate otherwise light-hearted discussion and are not interrupted by users who are not engaging with them in good faith.
Note that all server rules still continue to apply in this space. In particular, the following will continue to be banned in #serious-discussion and moderated appropriately:
- Discrimination (such as queerphobia, misogyny, racism, etc.)
- Dehumanising or villainising groups of people
- NSFW content
- Incel/black-pill ideology
Likewise, we will require all posts in this space to be made in good faith. If you advocate for a position, we will assume it is your genuine position on the topic and, if necessary, moderate accordingly. From now on, moderators will redirect extended off-topic conversations about serious subjects into #serious-discussion. Correspondingly, we will also redirect low-quality content out of #serious-discussion and into #discussion or #chill.
If you have any questions about the moderation of this channel, please feel free to ask us through @river flame or in #『meta-discussion』 if you have access. Similarly, if you see any conversations in #serious-discussion that are veering off the rails or breaking server rules, please ping <@&268886789983436800> so we can step in.
Role Colours
Hello <@&1497698431639224476>, <@&1497698225187197071>, <@&1497697872018276404>, and <@&1497720574305243247>,
Many users use the @Not Very Ppl role to hide their role colours. With my most recent update to @worn dove, you may now use the command /colour remove to actually remove all of your role colours.
Further, it has long been requested that users with coloured roles be able to choose which of their colours they'd like to wear. For this, you can use the /colour swap command. This allows you to select which of your roles' colours you'd like to use out of those you are eligible for.
Please note that this applies only the roles specifically pinged - roles higher than @Honourable cannot have their colours removed.
Enjoy!
ratgirl.
-# PS: The @Not Very Ppl role has had its grey colour removed. One of the motivations for implementing this feature is that the @Not Very Ppl role is fundamentally bad for accessibility - it is not possible within the Discord UI to achieve a grey colour which comes close to meeting the WCAG 7:1 contrast ratio accessibility standard across all standard Discord themes.
[Event] Weekly maths problems/topics
In order to encourage broader participation and foster collaborative engagement in mathematics, we are introducing guided weekly discussions centred on curated topics aimed at the undergraduate to post-graduate level. The objective is to create a structured space in which participants may collectively explore topics, including but not limited to:
- multiple proofs of a single theorem;
- different approaches to a given challenging problem;
- examination of the minimal assumptions underlying a theorem or definition, including the possibility of relaxing such assumptions;
- historical perspectives on significant results or (ongoing) work on open conjectures.
See the following message for more information on how the weekly topics will be formatted, how qualified users may submit their topics, and what expectations are placed on topic proposers.
Format
A new threads-only channel has been created, #weekly-problem. The main text channel will contain a message explaining how the system works, along with a living schedule of topics. Once a topic is accepted and its week begins, a thread in #weekly-problem will be opened for its discussion; there will additionally be a single thread for brainstorming future topics.
The first week will span from Thursday 30 April through Friday 08 May and will focus on the many proofs of The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. It will be guided by staff. After the first week, user-submitted proposals will take over.
Expectations for the proposers
Proposers are expected to possess some form of familiarity with their chosen topic. Ideally, this includes having (partial) solutions, relevant insights, or, in the case of theorem-focused discussions, knowledge of at least one proof.
While it is not required to have complete mastery of the topic at hand, greater familiarity with the subject will significantly enhance the quality of discussion. Proposers are expected to be active in their topic thread and, whenever necessary, to guide discussion. Proposers are not expected to be present at all times during the week; however, they should make themselves available at some point if help is needed.
Submission process
Members holding the <@&987465833330667540> role are invited to propose topics along with the weeks for which they are available to guide its discussion. Proposals should be submitted via DM to @river flame which will be forwarded to <@&1168540364462899250> for review according to the following criteria:
- The proposal must be mathematically meaningful and made in good faith (e.g., submissions such as proofs of the Collatz conjecture or trivial statements will not be considered).
- The topic should be suitable for the community’s range of expertise, avoiding material that is either overly elementary or excessively specialised. Proposals spanning early undergraduate through postgraduate levels are all welcome.
- At least one of the weeks for which the Proposer submitted their availability have not already been granted to another topic and Proposer.
Upon passing those three checks, staff will create a dedicated thread.
Qualified users interested in submitting a topic for discussion may DM @river flame for clarification on what topics are acceptable.
Announcing the STEM Network
Hello,
Those who have been on the server for a long time may be aware that our network channel has remained unchanged since 2021 (with the exception of the addition of one server earlier this year). Those who have been here for even longer shall recognise these as the constituent servers of what used to be known as the "Science Network." For all intents and purposes, this network has been defunct for several years now. Indeed, not all of the original Science Network servers are still active or moderated to any appreciable degree. One or two servers, which have been quietly removed from the channel over the years, underwent changes in staffing and ownership which resulted in spaces which were tolerant of bigotry, academic dishonesty, or other unpleasant behaviour.
Accordingly, the Mathematics Server has partnered with a small number of servers which share a mutual set of values. A key motivation behind this is to ensure that we do not publicly advertise or implicitly endorse any servers which we do not know to be inclusive, high-quality, and with an active community and healthy moderation team. Further, we hope to streamline moderation through a shared ban log, which will enable us or any other member server to ban e.g. particularly bigoted or problematic users across the entire network, ensuring that all servers within the new STEM Network remain inclusive, academically honest, open spaces for individuals with interests in a wide range of topics.
We further hope in the future to use the network to facilitate interdisciplinary talks or events between communities. For more information on the STEM Network, as well as links to our new partner servers (they're very neat - do check them out!), please refer to the new #network channel.

@everyone
Hello! We are interested in this servers demographics! I have prepared a Google form survey collecting anonymous responses. In a week or so, we will have pretty graphs ready!!
Please take the time to fill out the form below:
https://goo.gl/forms/I9T0nzFH39gtjUG13
Thank you!!
HEY I COULDNT FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO GOOGLE SHEETS THAT WELL SO FOR NOW IM JUST GONNA COPY PASTE A BUNCH OF CHARTS THE GOOGLE FORM MADE FOR ME!
age chart (weird glitch at age 17, where it says 1 at the bottom is also part of age 17, the one with 108 is age 18)
ok this chart looks pretty useless ngl ill try to figure out how to make it look better and actually helpful
pretty sure there is a massive skew cuz of the people that actually care enough to respond to surveys being older
note that the massive white patch on the right side is basically all highschoolers (or less than) who didnt understand the previous question
this is out of the ppl who chose "No" to postsecondary question
Rest in peace, Atiyah.

Added a #linear-algebra channel.
moved #linear-algebra to Mathematics category.
Added a #math-pedagogy channel, for discussion for teachers, tutors, TA's, and professors about math teaching techniques.
stop asking for help on random questions in #math-discussion. read #info for posting guidelines and etiquette.
everyone has been muted temporarily. now we wait for things to calm down.
(no I will not ping everyone)
server is unmuted.
Summary of today's drama:
- everyone was pinged for an ad in this channel (which has been removed)
- everyone was pinged in chill
- server muted for 30 minutes
it's over now.
added two channels:
#guided-problems
#guided-discussion
purpose:
to show cool math problems and guide interested people through their cool solutions.

texit is currently down.
estimated revival time 18:00 EST
as a stopgap, we will be using @rose summit until texit is rebooted.
the inline prompt is $$ <equation stuff> $$
mathmode command is =tex
Update:
texit is back up (3 hours early)
rendering is back to normal.
if you don't have nitro, don't update discord on mobile!! it will make all emotes u can't use show up grayed, kinda like on desktop. super annoying and data draining

Okay, hi, you may notice there’s a new channel: #books-old. It is intended to collect a list of good math books, especially for self study at the high school and university level. However, you may notice it’s currently rather empty. I need your help to make it less so:
If there are any mathematics textbooks you think should be on the list (or if you think the description of a book on the list is bad), please fill out this survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfwwFEnheR1m_cHcg24IoM8cvUhhP8cFzj85yrv6e5lDvm_Yw/viewform
I will regularly go back to the survey results and add recommended books to the list.
Here’s to an awesome collection!
new rule: spoiling endgame will result in a 1 week mute + getting kicked.
we are currently undergoing a major overhaul of the channel structure.
please be patient during these times.
the channel structure will be finalized within a day.
edit: the overhaul is complete
there are now 3 categories of math topic channels, sorted by academic level. conceptual questions and discussions go in these channels.
there is now a dedicated #cats channel.
tatsumaki has been disabled in all channels but #cats, #bots, #mathematics-voice, and #off-topic-voice
renamed # mathematics to # discussion-math
renamed # serious to # discussion-general
swapped their order
**HEY EVERYONE
BIG UPDATE**
Nitro server boosting now exists!! Server boosting is a great way to help the server as it does help us with some perks. You can find the corresponding perks boosting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyX7U78keu0, or if you prefer the article https://dis.gd/serverboosting!
For those that boost, it is very appreciated. In the past, many people have asked for a means to donate, and this is going to be a recommended way of donating. This way, everyone in this server can receive Nitro perks and it would be this servers honor to provide it.
texit is currently down.
we'll be using mathbot until it's back up.
no current timeline known.
use $$ before and after an equation to render latex inline, or use =tex before your code to enter mathmode.
EDIT: we're back with texit.
In an unprecedented move, the Physics server (https://discord.gg/N5jVwsg) has seized one of our channels: #0. We had no choice but to retaliate and annex one of theirs. Please help us maintain territory by joining their server and navigating to the #0 channel.
Public Service Announcement
It has recently been discovered that COVID-19 can be transmitted through Discord! In light of this news we ask you to exercise social distancing of at least 2 minutes between different people's messages.
Symptoms include your nickname turning green, but keep in mind that you could be infected for a long time before showing any symptoms! If you do show any symptoms we ask you to act responsibly and quarantine yourself.
And as always exercise proper hygiene: keep your hands !clean by !washing them with !soap.
PSA: OFFERING MONEY FOR SERVICES
We ask you to avoid arranging financial transactions using this server. Money is very serious and has legal implications in the real world. In case any participant of the transaction disagrees, it becomes not only a moral dispute, but also actually a legal case. The server staff has neither the ability nor the desire to investigate such claims. Therefore we make the following disclaimer:
If you end up in a financial transaction with someone on this server, you are completely on your own, and in general the staff will not be able to help you or reprimand anyone should any offence happen.
Note that any form of asking to do your homework for you, or to help you on tests -- is still academic dishonesty which we do not tolerate.
If you'd like to post in the #496784390458703904 section (if you know for sure that your post belongs there) please kindly request the <@&738418816756875375> role from the bot by typing ,iam adv in #bots
PSA:
If you've enjoyed using our LaTeX bot <@&511231220735279104> then consider donating to @deft tapir who is generously developing and hosting the bot for free! https://www.patreon.com/texit/
Hey everyone. This'll is my last announcement as "server owner." I've had this position since October 2018, and this place has grown and evolved a lot since then. It's been a wild ride. Lately I've been growing distant from the server. I just don't have as much time to commit anymore. I'll be finishing my math degree pretty soon and I won't be staying in math, so it's inevitable I'll become less involved with it. I figured now was a good time to pass on the responsibility.
@marble quail will be taking over in my stead.

Talks and seminars
Some of you may have already noticed and used the new #events channel. The channel is for organizing various events like mathematical talks and seminars hosted by our users. You can now subscribe to be notified about events by self-assigning a role with ,iam Talks. If you'd like to present something feel free to message a moderator about it.
NUMBERS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GIVEN NAMES
Active role
We realize that our active contributors need some due recognition, and we have implemented a set of roles to highlight that. They are assigned automatically, based on short-term and long-term activity on the server. The perks of the roles are still being figured out, so stay tuned!
We have updated the lists of Honorables to be more in line with our understanding of what the role should stand for.
We now have a @river flame bot that you can DM if you ever want to bring up any concerns with the staff team discreetly, or if there's something that you feel might not be significant enough for a @ mods ping.
@river flame can now reply to your inquiries if necessary.
There is a new #latex-help channel for discussing LaTeX and everything related to that.
In light of this the #360643177503260674 section has been pulled from the bottom and populated a little bit. Also minor name and order changes in #360643390594875392 (possibly not final).
If anyone here is decently proficient at Python, we're looking for qualified volunteers to help out with an open source project of ours. If you're good with things like discord.py and Flask and would like to help, DM me.
It appears that there there are currently elevated rates of spambots sending spam to people. When reporting spam it would be great if you included the message link to the DM you got (right click -> Copy Message Link / long tap -> Share -> Copy). With message links we can report them to Discord in bulk, or you could make a report yourself at https://dis.gd/report (Trust & Safety -> Report Spam).
Instead of cryptic bot commands you can now react for self-assignable roles (studying, Talks, Advanced, etc). See the ROLES section of #info.
React with
for a free role that does nothing.
Continuation of the post on spambots 2 messages above this:
To protect yourself from scams, we strongly advise the following:
- Never follow a link sent to you in DMs by someone you don't know. Certainly do not enter any personal information into any such websites.
- Never provide personal or account information of any sort to someone in DMs.
- Never purchase any product or give any payment information based on a DM conversation.
- Use common sense. Assume anyone randomly DMing you is untrustworthy by default.
There are a few common types of scammers that have been affecting this server recently: cryptocurrency advertisements, Steam "accidental trade/report" scams (they probably got your Steam info from your Discord profile), people offering to pay for homework help but never following up, apps offering "free Chegg" or similar, etc. This list is not exhaustive - again, assume any random DMs are suspicious. Note: if you ever need to offer information to ANY service for ANY reason, the service in question will contact you directly - not work through a Discord DM middleman. Avoid following any links, and if you want to access a website, navigate to it yourself through a web browser rather than clicking on/typing in any links anyone provides you.
And to reiterate, we appreciate if you report any spam or scam messages you receive by DMing @river flame . When reporting spam, it would be great if you included the message link to the DM you got (right click → Copy Message Link / long tap → Share → Copy). With message links we can report them to Discord in bulk, or you could make a report yourself at https://dis.gd/report (Trust & Safety → Report Spam).
We cannot reasonably prevent nor take any liability for any scams or financial transactions that happen in DMs. Please protect yourself. If you wish to disable DMs from server members, you can do so via right clicking the server icon on your sidebar and selecting "Privacy Settings".
Apologies for role reactions not working for a bit there. Some bot updates have accidentally left them disabled. Fixed now.
Hey y'all,
If you got randomly pinged in #discussion earlier today , our apologies. That was a bunch of spambots that pinged individual users to advertise their server. We shut it down basically immediately, but since they were spamming so fast, Discord did not process our bans very fast, and because multiple bots were used, we had to take somewhat drastic measures.
Sorry if you got pinged. We try to avoid pinging everyone (the bot attack did not use everyone pings, it used individual pings), and will look into preventing this from happening again.
If you joined the server that was being advertised, we'd appreciate if you reported it to Discord admins. Thanks!
(this is a repost of a message sent in #discussion )
Due to some updates in @formal karma (to support threads) activity roles (Active, Very Active, Emeritus) are now being recalculated. This might take circa 20 hours. This is completed now.
In light of a recent increase in the amount of phishing attacks (mostly themed around discord, steam, and "free nitro"), we are taking automated measures to detect and remove such phishing links on our server. In light of this please avoid copy-pasting any phishing messages on the server (if you need to report something, @river flame is fine).
These attacks mostly use compromised accounts of unsuspecting users. If your account was compromised, once you regain access (change your password), don't hesitate to DM the mods or @river flame and we'll get things sorted.
Please also note that we cannot do anything about DM spambots, so you should still stay vigilant and avoid falling for any scams. You can help out by reporting such DMs to Discord via https://dis.gd/report and to us via @river flame.
Threads are now available in the #496784390458703904 section. (Sorry it took a while due to bot support). Threads are also available in #events: the announcer can create a thread where everyone can discuss e.g. planning, details, or feedback.
We are currently deploying a new automated questions channels system. Apologies for any inconvenience. Hopefully everyone who wanted to -- had enough time to play with the system on the test channel we had, so please don't abuse it. Rules, guidelines, and instructions will come eventually.
EDIT: It seems to have been deployed now. Please read #❓how-to-get-help for instructions on how to use it. Helpers might also want to take a look in #490536027400962080.
Hello,
We recently polled a collection of users (mostly those with the Advanced role) for feedback on how to restructure the "Advanced Mathematics" section of the server. The anonymous results are available here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Nqpr3WpvH0JjF9x5JMPKNzTvcsdQPQrCEocxT54MhEs/viewanalytics.
Taking the results into consideration, we have rolled out the first draft of the restructuring of the advanced section. A summary of the changes:
- Topology and Geometry: #topology-and-geometry was a weird mixture of algebraic and analytic subjects. We have split them into two halves: #point-set-topology for point set/algebraic/geometric topology, and #diff-geo-diff-top for the analytic side.
- ODEs and PDEs: Differential equations have been given separate spaces, rather than being bundled into other channels. #multivariable-calculus and #odes-and-pdes are now separate channels, and #advanced-pdes exists for more advanced/theoretical discussion on PDEs.
- Two Levels of Analysis: With PDEs now separated, we can partition the analysis channel properly. #real-complex-analysis covers more introductory analysis subjects, while #advanced-analysis covers everything beyond; read channel descriptions for more specifics. With this change, #complex-variables (which used to be in the Early University section) has been made redundant, and hence repurposed into #real-complex-analysis .
- All advanced channels have been reordered. You might have to retrain your muscle memory.
- We're leaving #proofs-and-logic and #discrete-math untouched for now, and will revisit them once we're happy with the changes to the advanced section.
This is just a first draft, and everything (in particular channel names) is subject to change. Thank you to those who responded to the poll!
(rough logic behind groupings, don't read TOO much into it; labels like "discrete subjects" are obviously not fully representative of the material in the channels)
Challenge Problems
As annouced in the #challenge-problems channel, there's currently not enough people interested in reviewing solutions for challenges, and so we are forced to archive that section. You can download the problem archive below. In case of any inaccuracies in typesetting or credit, please contact @hearty halo or @marble quail.
Help Channels
The occupied help channels are now ordered by recency, making it easier to see which questions haven't been answered for a while (the ones near the bottom).
Help Channels
In order to avoid people hogging up a lot of help channels, the bot will now hard limit the number of help channels per person to 2.
Role Colors
To address accessibility concerns, we have adjusted the colors of most roles slightly. They should now be easier to read, particularly for Light Mode users.
Comparison.
Statement regarding the present military situation involving Russia and Ukraine:
We, the moderation team, would like to offer our condolences and well-wishes to anyone affected by present geopolitical circumstances in Eastern Europe. We ask that you prioritise your personal safety and well-being over anything else, whether you are directly affected as a combatant or civilian or emotionally impacted in any way.
The announcement is as such: We will be disallowing discussion of the military conflict in Ukraine, and surrounding geopolitical circumstances, in this server. This also applies to links, jokes, quips, "memes", and any other form of content you can think of.
The Mathematics Discord does not disallow political discussion, but we tightly control these dialogues to keep them sensible and mature, and to prevent them from becoming too overwhelming and heated. Due to this being an active situation with a variety of perspectives involving complicated diplomatic concepts and objectives, with tens of millions of lives and livelihoods being at stake, we want to take great care with our treatment of the present situation.
We do not feel that this server is the appropriate space for these sorts of discussions. This isn't to downplay their importance; rather, we feel that this server lacks the maturity of userbase and culture that would be required to discuss these geopolitical circumstances with the delicacy and rigour they demand. Furthermore, we feel that the moderation team does not have the appropriate intuition or experience to handle a situation of this weight and complexity; we are just Math Discord mods, it would be hubris to try and overextend our purpose here.
We ask that, if you have a desire to discuss these circumstances, you find other locations that are more suited to discussing these issues.
Passing references to the conflict, such as news about the ICM 2022 conference planned for St. Petersburg, are permitted but tightly controlled, and we will actively disallow any attempts to springboard off these mentions into political discussions.
Finally, we ask that you not post anything potentially compromising to the operational security of any involved parties, such as troop locations, status reports on active engagements, or any other military information.
Stay safe and healthy. If you're personally affected by these circumstances, know that you're not alone, and that — though we unfortunately lack the means to help you — we sympathise with your situation and struggles. Thank you and our condolences.

Summary: Due to feeling that our moderation team is not properly equipped to handle discussions of the ongoing geopolitical situation, we will be disallowing discussion of the military conflict in Ukraine, and surrounding geopolitical circumstances, in this server. Prioritise your own personal safety and well-being over anything else. Our sincerest condolences to those affected.
The bot operating available/occupied help channels is having a bit of an outage, apologies for the inconvenience.
This was an issue with the hosting provider, and has been resolved now.
TeXiT (the LaTeX rendering bot) is currently down. Its developers are looking into it, please don't pester them — they work hard. We can't do anything about it. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Back up.
We have enabled text-in-voice, meaning there's now a built-in text channel inside every voice channel. You can use the "Open Chat" button on every voice chat to access it. The plan is to archive #mathematics-voice, #off-topic-voice, and #advanced-math-voice in favor of the built-in text channels. This will happen in the coming days as bots (@mellow verge) gain support for those.
Hello! We'd like to know more about the users of the server and their needs, in hopes of making the server a better place for everyone. Please take a moment to fill out this short anonymous survey: https://forms.gle/TpFoQVjXrNqKoDde6
And in exchange we'll show some pretty graphs.
Education level roles
We have introduced three new roles that you can pick up to indicate the level of mathematics that you’re studying: <@&987465729538420777>, <@&987465799914643528>, and <@&987465833330667540>. This is not necessarily tied to being formally enrolled in a school/university program, as we have e.g. many talented high-schoolers who study university-level mathematics. Note that as a form of quality control, applications for the <@&987465833330667540> role are subject to review. For more info about these roles and how to get them see #info.
PSA: Phishing & Scam Discord links
Stop clicking links people DM you. We've gotten a few reports of random server links being sent — these servers might have some sort of "shame/exposed" theme, or just a totally random theme, whatever. In any case, joining suspicious servers is a good way to get your account compromised.
If you do join a random server, definitely do NOT scan any QR codes, click any links, enter any personal or account information (there or on another site), send them screenshots or screenshares of your Discord client, or authorize any external sites to access your Discord account. Most of these bad actors work by exploiting either Discord's QR account log-in process or a special code in your settings menu that gives account permissions.
Here's an example of one such DM from a compromised (i.e. "hacked") account. Not all DMs look like this, but this is a common format recently. Other common phish/scam formats include "free Nitro", things involving Steam, things involving being "accidentally" reported, cryptocurrency/NFTs, giveaways... Just don't click random links, don't give them your info, and follow warnings when Discord tells you not to scan random QR codes.
Note that server size is NOT a good indicator of trustworthiness, since the way these scams usually spread is by mass-DMing, which naturally inflates their size (in fact, in some cases, getting a large member count is the goal so they can monetise or resell the server).
Footnote: Them being from "a friend" or "a user you know" means nothing, since the way these scams work is by stealing accounts. The account will "look legit" because it was stolen from a real person who fell for it. Don't trust weird links, no matter who sends them.
#mathematics-voice, #off-topic-voice, and #advanced-math-voice have been archived, in favor of Text-in-Voice which can be accessed using the "Open Chat" button.
