I should not have been allowed to choose my own courses in high school, to be fair π
We used to have a similar system in the UK, with 'comprehensive' schools and 'grammar' schools.
You had to pass an exam at age 11 to get into a grammar school.
Sociology?
Civics?
Oh that sound useful actually.
Maybe that would be called 'general studies' here π€

Gymnasium (or gymnΓ‘zium, gimnazija, gimnazjum, etc.) is a term in various European languages for a secondary school that prepares students for higher education at a university. It is comparable to the British English terms grammar school and sixth form college, and to US English preparatory high school. Before the 20th century, the gymnasium sys...
I think in Europe, master's degrees are typically 1 year.
And bachelor's degrees are usually 3 years.
I always thought 'college' was synonymous with 'university' in the US π€
Well, there are generous grants, aren't there?
@peak frigate π
In the UK a college is an institution you might go to from 16 to 18. It can also mean a constituent college of a collegiate university (Oxford, Cambridge, and a few others).
any of you good with python that could hop over to #off-topic-lounge-text and let me pick your brain real quick?

Sorry for any trouble or hurt feelings I caused
you're fine, i think your reaction was reasonable.
every time this happens i promise to myself i wont engage into arguments like this anymore and the next day im at it again, having gotten dragged in by something i was sure could not become a bad argument.
I appreciate that you recognize it
It's really easy to get caught up in the moment and not take that step back
its annoying tho, to the point where im hesitant to join VC at all
The WebGL build option allows Unity to publish content as JavaScript programs which use HTML5/JavaScript, WebAssembly, WebGL rendering
API and other web standards to run Unity content in a web browser.
That's why I try to keep things calm, it's just not possible all the time. And I enjoy you here in call, same with @true valley , same with all of you. But I want all of you to try and take a step back and breathe whenever you feel that coming on or you catch yourself already in progress
I don't want to be an asshole or seen as one, but when I join and it's almost a shouting match, that's a problem
and theres this nagging part in my brain saying "i did nothing wrong this is everyone elses fault"
which is, yknow, not great
But that's the part of communicating. It's a multi ended thing. Sometimes you may not be at fault, however the situation still topples over into something it shouldn't have. It's about learning to diffuse the situation and sometimes even abandoning a point for the sake of the full conversation or the mood of the group
If it's in a loop, swap gears

Just to sum it up, DNS analytics are not important to most, DNS is different service thus it makes sense that CF DNS Analytics API is very sparse/unusual and not like the rest of their web proxy APIs

what do you guys think about DSA do you think it's compulsory?

yes

Yeah, me too. Bye Mina π

I've always had a good impression of OCR as an exam board.
my options are OCR or AQA
pretty much
i've heard people both calling them out to be shit and as a whole comp sci seems a bit shit in the UK
Yeah, I guess the most important thing might be to have a good teacher.
Most people with a CS degree would rather get a high paying job writing software than go into teaching.
We didn't even have CS when I was at school, just ICT
My GCSE comp sci teach can barely write python (She has a go at me for using classes in cases where it would be preferable to use a class), although she comes from a theory background so she is pretty good at teaching that and she is also pretty nice.
isn't ICT like learning how to use spread sheets word and common software?
Pretty much
sounds like a joy
In painstaking detail
I was laughing when I saw joe is gonna learn PHP

ICT = Information and communications technology?
I can put "Microsoft word proficient" on my resume π

lol @ KJ im building my github action literally just looking at yours lol
@ KJ do you know what the key-path is?
was configuring my neovim, does anyone know about this, i can't figure out why this is happening
Well I think his point was that Gymnasium literally means a kind of school and nothing else.
It pretty much means the same thing as 'grammar school' in the UK.
But grammar school has nothing to do with learning grammar, it's just a selective-entry state school.
@random minnow not @ KJ its @random minnow
ubtun-latest doesn't point to 21.04 or 20.10, so i think that is it

"In spite of my rage 'I'm still just ready to cage"
@random minnow I looked at past papers, and AQA seems more straightforward. OCR seems a bit more stimulating, but also has a lot of questions like "why are computers bad for the environment" π
Actual lyrics: "In spite of my rage, I'm still just a rat in a cage"
"Excuse me while I kiss this guy"
"You are the piece of meat, I wish I didn't eaaat."

@halcyon notch Your mic got stuck and you just kept saying Japanese over and over and over

I always heard this, do people miss hear this line?
Yes. I did.
it happens with every song
Though it wasn't Tony Danza. It was something like, "Turn me down sir." for me.
I hate those kind of questions, that why I have been considering AQA since i'm doing OCR right now and these kind of vague questions annoy me where the only way to answer them is to know the mark scheme
I thought the lyric was βHold me close or turn me down sirβ

I'm sure it has something to do with language models and entropy. Like, if you know what to expect to hear, you hear it much more clearly. Like, when I listen to pilot radio-speak, I can barely make out a single thing they're saying.
Because I don't have a mental model for that language, I don't know what to expect to hear.
Misophonia.
to be fair, pilots and atc do a good imitation of the micro-machine man
oh there's a korean tv show that plays on this. the game is you listen to a song and dictate/transcribe a couple lines of the lyrics
also when I expect to hear it, I sometimes miss a word
and the prize is yummy food
That's awesome
I thought that's where you get annoyed by certain sounds π€
Like chewing.
and once you're TOLD what the lyrics are, you hear them crystal clear

@golden marsh here some reasons that i collected, for thonny being a bad IDE
- Key binding for comments in thonny is something like ctrl+3 (but in all other ides like sublime-text, vscode, jetbrains its ctrl+/)
- key binding for multiple cursors don't exists
- no auto-completion
... really? i didnt even recomend thonny, that was hemlock.
For the first one, I can't even press Ctrl + /
Dude, again
It's meant for beginners
I really don't know why you're ripping into it
2 and 3 are fine, I never use 2 unless accidentally
for me its actually ctrl + # which is neat because # in python
For 3, I use that quite a lot. But you'll find that many beginners in coding get confused between linter errors, and exceptions raised during runtime
So I actually think it is nice that it doesn't auto-complete, lint, and type check
i mean multiple cursors is needed becuase when you copy paste a string from google it dosent includes quotes and the lines are broken python will give error EOL error while scanning string literal
i actually use multiline cursors a lot but i think its a feature thats very complex for beginners to grasp
So how does multiple cursors fix that?
Oooh, how?
its quicker than refactor or search-replace for renaming multiple things
its also really neat for quickly formatting data
Ah, I rarely do that but I see
#code-help-voice-text message here a guys i was helping posted this
the multiple cursors made the formatting easy to
do
i tend to import CSV into a SQL database by multiline-cursoring it into a sql statement if i only need to do that once
things like that
But that's very advanced and not a needed for an editor to get started with
bonus thing they were a beginner
Okay, that's convenient but at the same time added complexity
it reduces time
so does
according to a lot of people
we are not saying that everyone thats a beginner will be confused by it, but on average its too rarely actually required and too hard to grasp to be beginner friendly
VIM's key bindings sucks
if they have worked with python in a simpler editor for a few months? sure, recommend them vscode, pycharm or even vim if you want.
the only good thing in VIM is terminal editing
Exactly, that's convenient.. but it's not like "not having multiple cursors" will be the bottleneck in a beginner's coding
im not saying they dont, but they "reduce time" too when you know them
vim's has a lot of boundries too
i dont care about vim, im using it as a example of a tool that a lot of people consider too complex to learn. thats the way pycharm will look like to beginners, overwhelming, a lot to learn, and generally not worth their time while learning the basics of programming
Why do you think schools have students code on paper?
yea but the thing you dont get is this that like i was helping a guy with discord.py and he was sending message copied from google and it was big it would have been a pain in ass to format it without multiple cursors, its just a helpful tool and all beginner ides should have them
I can't be the only one who sees an eggplant
Sure, it would've taken a long time. But that one-time you made him save time, is not a dealbraker for code editors
maybe its cool sometimes? how many people wont need it tho? its not that this single feature is too complex for beginners, its more the mindset. isnt a advanced refactoring tool much more useful? what about automatic venvs?
and then you end up with people being confused about a very complex piece of software when they actually just want to learn the language.
i have seen enough people ask about vscode/pycharm to know that recommending those to beginners is only gonna lead to frustration and questions
alright but here i understand that pycharm is a complex IDE but thonny is not also a good of a editor wouldn't the beginner have problems when they switch to pycharm from thonny because thonny key bindings are alot of different from all other ides
i think aa beginner wont endeavour to learn keybinds that much
Wait what is this argument?
You think that someone shouldn't use Thonny, because when they switch to PyCharm they will have a bad time?
its that keybinds need to be relearned
@mild flume I assume you were referring to this

Ah, I think that is the least of worries here :/
now you are counting a lot of exception, first the a beginner(launds argument) wont need multiple cursors becuase beginners dont deal those types of data, but i showed you guys two example of that type of data in a single day from a beginners, second key bindings are the reason i will not choose notepad over IDEs
do you actually want me to find all examples of beginners being confused by pycharm
no i am not saying pychamr is good for begginers
thats the entire point thos
i am saying thonny is not so much of a good IDE
pycharm is not good for beginners so dont recommend it
thonny is much simpler and therefore a bit better
It really isn't, but it good and simple enough
I am not urging you to use it, but it's a good pick for someone starting out
Thonny is very basic even for beginners
i would say sublime text, sublime text is a better editor than thonny
Ehhh, maybe. Sublime text has a lot of depth, but yeah it could be a good starting point.
The biggest issue I have with Sublime text is me lacking experience with it
is that even a issue?
i think that's likely blue's point

cloyure?

gotta go!
Not really, but I can't recommend it when it has that much depth.
i personally don't but if you provide a specific question or sample code & errors you're getting you're more likely to get help
you should also try claiming a help channel once you have a more specific question #βο½how-to-get-help
you might have to try a couple or many times, depending on the availability of volunteers and also the quality of your question

hm, i dont openned a topic for pandas, just bs4
but its with bs4 i can use the pandas correctly
i went thru your post history - you have code where you're importing pandas but you're not using any methods from the pandas library and no dataframes?
yeah i read all your posts. you import pandas as pd but your code doesn't use pandas at all so what is the help you need with pandas?

Which service?
Oh service bus
Interesting in your talk rabbit π
What are you basically trying to do jake?
with ServiceBusClient.from_connection_string(conn_str=sb_config['connection_string']) as client:
#This will run forever just getting reactions off the queue
while True:
with client.get_queue_receiver(queue_name=sb_config['queue'],max_wait_time=10) as reciever:
for msg in reciever:
try:```
from azure.servicebus import ServiceBusClient```
Oh ok
str(msg.message)```
reaction = json.loads(str(msg.message))```
reciever.complete_message(msg)```
reciever.abandon_message(msg)```
So Abandon is just gonna send that message again?
no not again
Does message bus also like support making rooms, like websockets?like you could make message rooms
I lost internet in between, do the messages get sent synchronously 1 by 1 to each receiver or all messages to all of them?
@elder wraith bonk
I was also doing the same thing so thanks for the info and knowledge @elder wraith π
lol yes
Oh yes they jumping
Right
WTF did u do to time
Just put something else together, remove that numbers
The ServiceBusReceiver class defines a high level interface for receiving messages from the Azure Service Bus Queue or Topic Subscription. The two primary channels for message receipt are receive() to make a single request for messages, and for message in receiver: to continuously receive incoming messages in an ongoing fashion. Please use the g...
So who gets first
Right
Ah got it
What would be good use cases for service bus, I am finding this interesting so wanted to make a quick project or something
Oh nice π thanks
Yeah
Getting it
Right, perfect
Yep
So like delivering app, you send delivery requests and they getting assigned
without getting duplicated
Yep
Oh yeah
I will give it a shot tomorrow
Ah nice
I love how you say that lmao
This is how service bus is cool
In short what are subscription and topics in service bus?
Like rooms?
Oh
Yeah get it, kind of
Right
I havenβt yet, just listening and getting bits and bits, will start to join them as I start working with it

Here's how to format Python code on Discord:
```py
print('Hello world!')
```
These are backticks, not quotes. Check this out if you can't find the backtick key.
Backticks are a deprecated alias for repr(). Don't use them any more, the syntax was removed in Python 3.0.
The repr() function returns a printable representation of the given object. In this tutorial, we will learn about Python repr() in detail with the help of examples.
self.input_field = QtWidgets.QTextEdit()
self.input_field.setMarkdown("repr(```python\nfor x in range():\n```)")
self.input_field.setMarkdown("repr(python\nfor x in range():\n)")

Well, college just means university right.
Yeah, you apply to study a particular degree. We don't really have majors.
So if you applied to study physics, you would study just physics from the start of your degree.
Maybe with a couple of external options in the first year.
well some unis do have minor and majors
I find European universities are a lot less paternalistic than in the US.
so 120 ects for one and 60 for the other
but yeah for the most part its just one degree
And there aren't any general education requirements.
that's nice tbh lol
The idea of being required to take physical education classes at university is completely foreign.
if you work quickly, you could do away with most of your gened credits in high school with AP or IB scores, and graduate 1 to 1.5 years early
lol but thats not the us system
anyone that wants to read the maths exam i had to take
(its german but i can translate if you want me to)
yo
The maths exams I took at university were so much harder, but with much less calculation.
