The lawyer bro is one of my favorite characters haha
I meant the other lawyer. But loved them both
OH yeah the guy that keeps going to jail. He's hilarious too lol
They genuinely did a great job of startup culture
Maybe I should watch it
hey guys, just graduated with an information systems degree.
any recomendations on getting a job in a data analyst, business analyst, or even database admin roles?
which university?
pretty decent 👍
Yes, i am from USA.
i too go to school in texas
which school?
A&M
i would like to go there for my master aha. how do you like it?
great for undergrad but i dont think its as good for grad
might be better at UT or gtech or similar
i hear you, i will definitely have to look into UT for master then. hopefully i can do it online aha
UT is a good school
What would you like to ask? I don't currently live, but have been there multiple times and on track to move there within the next year
How is the mentality there? And is studying there good? Thank you for answering:)

interview for societe generale in the bag, lfg!
(french IB)
hi there - i am an engineerig student who just graduated and i just wanna share this asking you guys for suggestions based on reality with no scarcasm . i passed out as an electronics and cmmmunications graduate but i wanted to enter the market as a programmer so i started learning web devlopment and i am still honing my skills but the reality check i got after learning the status of web dev in indian market and the incredible amount of skills a good starting position as a fresher would cost. i got overwhelmed by it and this is the end of it .i tried applying for low pay job roles even qualified for them but honestly i am not satisfied . i am here for guidance on what would be a better option to move into judging market trends and all. Thank you
everyone is vastly overqualified to be an entry level web developer, yet everyone is struggling to a job as an entry level web developer. in my mind, you have three choices:
-
go back to college and do computer science, try to get several internships before graduating
-
do not try to become a developer, pivot to anything else.. project manager, IT support, networking (get a CCNA cert), IT sales, etc
-
Enter the freelance world, try to get real customers (even for free) to build up a portfolio until you have enough experience (1-2 years, tons of live projects you can point too)
I would mostly consider option 2, but if you think engineering is your passion and you are able to have housing/food covered, do 3.
It is that bad? 😭
What if you do your own projects for a year or so, contribute to open source, then try applying again?
Should work, you should have some experience at least and a good portfolio
you can't improve what you can't measure.
So you have first to understand how you stand comparing to the market. Ask your peers, ask other folks you know in the industry and feel free to post an anonymized version of your resume.
Look at it as a sales pipeline where you sell yourself. There are multiple steps to get a job, from showing your ad (ie. your resume), going through the initial screel, interviews, etc. So you need to establish where you are failing at
And this is going to be brutal either way. So build resilience. Make sure you remain healthy and continue to hone your skills

i am thinking about trying no 2 and had some interviews few days ago

Is there a way to get python on mobile like replit
like is python code editor working
Yes, ask in #python-discussion
Hi all, i know that maybe this is not the best place to ask but i have a guestion about my career future. I am already learning Python (Flask, Web developong, working with pandas, SQL etc) for 6 years and i have a chance to start learning Java EE and Java SE (Spring), and i am looking forward to work in Europe/USA companies in future. Is it worth learning? Or should i focus on continuing learning Python in the next 12 month (I have this amount of time to learn and find a job)
Sure it is worth learning Java/Go/Kotlin in order to write more quality code that easier to refactor and maintain.
To write code that has no problems to utilize multithreading and virtual threads to take advantage of existing hardware to full capacity.
I will mention though that Spring+Boot itself is rumored to be a very not pleasant experience at all, and by same rumours it can be more enjoyable to use thing like Quarkus instead as this solution is more concentrated onto making things nice for development, and made from scratch to put Spring stuff behind.

hiring good developers are expensive, at my old job our rates started at €120/hr. I don't do contracting now, but either you hire someone super cheap from Fiverr and take the risk that they don't know what they're doing, or pay the price
💀
Im at #2 what are IT sales like what's sold or what type job is that
Free calculator
Click here to see this code in our pastebin.
for an entry or junior level job, but not even close to a senior or higher
10/hr is like retail/service/hospitality
IT sales i a very broad category and with multiple aspects to it. There would be the hardware side of things or software as two big components. There are lots of resellers especially in the hardware side of things or 'valueadd' type of sellers. And you can either be in the 'technical sales consulting' type role where you offer the technical or even architecture design services for a customer to buy what your company is selling. or you are the "sales sales" type. So like as a slightly more specific example you might be a sales person for a company that is an oracle partner. Or even your company has a software platform that runs on Oracle and your job as sales would be to sell your own cloud offering of your hosted application to customers or offer your software within the oracle CI. And all the fun stuff that goes along with doing that. hopefully that makes a little sense or gives an idea at least
i am shit in python dsa and i am from india i need to improve on dsa to crack interview and do cp

Guys, I blundered an interview today so bad. Need help to get master the concept of OOP, any road map tips?
Why you doing DSA in python?
I would suggest you try strivers DSA playlist in YouTube. If you don't try to solve the problem yourself and try to code yourself, no expensive course can help, try to learn and build strong fundamentals.
Personally, I like the strivers way of teaching, check it out and try hard to solve the problem all by yourself, it would be hard at first but you will see significant progress. Consistency is the key
can someone help me with a simple python code
Wassup?
i dmed you @robust merlin
Wrong channel, ask for help in #python-discussion
It does I always think about a software sales type of thing, I don't really know what oracle is but yeah I've been trying to find something I could create and sell, no experience with cloud hosting yet I know it just costs money to use atleast. My first ideas kinda been apps that pull from openai etc but yk that costs keys/API uses, other ideas related to generation type of apps with some ml I make but even that will require some cloud storage hosting, at that point I'm just thinking of learning some aws or azure cloud and using the ml skills to make a project and try to get a job lol
problem with statistics and how functionally meaningless they are tbh. Like they did they do that analysis 2 weeks after Alphabet laid off thousdands of people? what are the data sources? and what is the scope of the source?
wdym "90% of the stuff I studied" which major did you do?
so software sales doesnt exclusively mean sellings something you created. most of the time it just means selling software. But being freelance/self employed as you described has merit for sure but it takes a lot more work and knowledge then just what ap you are going to make
nah, its so easy to just copy paste stuff, especially if you are seeing the same post copy pastad.
but again, what does it matter? like what relevance does it even have for you or in general if it is true or not?
yes exactly, do you have a job?
so then, what does it matter if the unemployment rate of our field of work is any number at all? and yes I tracked down the post and its the federal reserve.
well if it is something you want to keep an eye on why not look into it directly? because a vague 'whats going on' isnt going to give you much.
national unenmployment rate is 4.2% currently
well it is also for recent grads only which actually is a very different metric
What that means for IT/engineering is there are a lot of skilled workers that are more skilled than college graduates and so the competition is higher is the most likely of reasons in this case. Which is quite common for fresh graduates regardless of field
We dont have a ton either. Frankly due to the fact that its easier to keep and fill junior roles than senior and higher.
I mean is it really that sus though? the more interesting part of that data is actually the bottom of the list.
well outperforming is the wrong word for that because this is a scope of recent grads with no comparison of exact numbers.
because it can be as simple as "there are more open jobs" etc.
not to mention the fact that the avg salary of comp sci is still 2x the arts
lol yea the limit can be a rit rough.
rest of the columns for the top
there are more open jobs
as in more positions? I don't think that affects the calculation of the unemployment rate
I mean in the sense of
1000 comp sci grads, 1000 arts grads, 50 comp sci entry positions, 100 arts entry positions = difference of 2x. But id have to look more at the numbers. It is just general calculations of groups of people and employment status
yes, but the mere existence of those positions does not affect how the unemployment rate is calculated
so I know that unenmployment is based on percentage of labor force that is unemployed and broken down by major and age in this case but if there are few jobs available in a given market or degree path then it would be a factor in that
edit and I am not saying that simply job positions existing changes unenmployment numbers, that isnt how it works.
given the low age range simply having just graduated (currently enrolled were excluded) is a factor in general across the board. Though it is noteworthy more-so with the other end of the chart like I mentioned
imo
it sure can. There can also be red herrings like during covid where news was saying how so many people were 'leaving the job market' for example
I mean, I didnt go to college and feel and am quite employable lol. But I think also part of the issue here is how generalized some of those degrees are.
like computer engineering can end up a LOT of different ways. some being more employable than others for sure
just like how a BS in comp sci is very generic too so it's what your actual path was that matters a lot
I wonder what historical data looks like, good poiont
Also braoder search def shows general news is touting the 'worst job market for grads in years' so it makes it difficult to separate the noise from fact
Ah I see, the unemployment rate for recent grads across the board has gone up tooo... 5.8% it seems?
though it is nothing like these other obvious times...
So that makes it sound like 6.1% isn't very interesting
that is partly how I read that too. like while the component of that higher unemployment rate for specific degrees is one thing, comparing it to the total it is not as wild as it seems
yea, because the 'all grads' is much lower and is actually much lower than the national average in general
I mean data science is the next super hot topic so it could easily be the next thing at the top of that list next year whenever everyone jumps on the bandwagon. which is functionally what happened here to some degree.
from what I understand data sciences are much more reliant on a degree for employment because its also one of the FOM things that everyone jumped on but lack the level of expertise from just picking it up on the side
I mean ymmv for sure and I am not speaking from first hand experience in the DS realm
its pretty tough without a degree in comp sci at least, especially in the age of ATS
oh nice. well if youre getting interviews its only a matter of time until it works out
I mean having projects you have made is a common and valid suggestion in the dev and comp sci realm for sure
true
undervaluing yourself certainly does help
or however one wants to phrase that
i just finished an interview and i kinda choked the salary negotiation. i rehearsed what i was gonna say but in the heat of the moment i couldnt do it
heh salary negotiation can be harder thant he interview sometimes
yeah you live and learn. ive still got time on my side so im not too upset
Hi
Going to need a bit more context. Mentality towards what? Work, immigration, studying, partying? And is studying in NL good compared to what alternatives? They do have good universities, and some student towns because of some of the bigger universities (Leiden is an example)
Funny enough, I did my undergrad and postgrad (not a masters degree, we have a postgrad inbetween bachelors and masters in my country) in data science and was unable to land a job in it 3 years ago and had to settle for a software engineering job instead
Heh, sounds like you were basically too early to hit the next wave and too late to hit the first one there
At least I'm happy in my current role and I enjoy software development. Landed a position at one of the biggest software companies in the country when I switched to looking for software dev jobs.
I'm very likely job hunting early next year if I emigrate though. So it may be worth taking three months later this year to create one or two nice data science focussed projects to be more marketable to those jobs as well in case I struggle with finding a dev position
Yea I mean if you are happy in your role that is important and of great benefit. IVe never actually been in software dev (and still technically not) my crareer has just shifted over the years and programming has been a side dable for some of it. And now its more up front with major shift to DevOps/CICD/etc
And Ive jumped in deeper on the hobby side of dev too and Im enjoying it. But I dont really know/think Im going to change careers into it.
I don’t know too much about IT sales, it’s mostly people with marketing/business/communication majors trying to learn about some tech and then being on the team that lands contracts for that tech company. I bet they appreciate people with tech backgrounds coming into sales though, worth looking into.
Open source contribution is cool and all— but it (likely) wont be more than a single point on your resume. Unless you’re making massive groundbreaking features, testing at scale, interacting with customers and you are one of the main drivers of the community, I don’t see it helping in your job search
It’s at best a good networking tool, you can start conversations with other highly regarded contributors to get references.
it can be useful when it comes to areas that some companies care about. As you mentioned, it has to be more than a drive by PR.
But I have reached out to OSS contributors and people in my network have been on the receiving end or reached out to contributors as well specifically because of the projects and/or their contributions
OSS has been what built the majority of my network, and generally been the main way I've found new jobs, etc...
I think it is very situation and OSS project dependent. Like to bschr's point. If you are doing major contributions to a larger project and are known among them that is one thing but just touching some repos or a single project unless it's ground breaking isn't going to be a big filler for your resume/portfolio. But it does have merits
might also just be because you're cracked
People don't contribute to OSS projects because they are cracked. However contributing and collaborating to projects, be it OSS or not, does correlate with improving your skills.
On top of that, you are already demonstrating skills related to the role by the very nature of your contributions and your interest by spending your time on that area.
If you are out of a job, it's a great way to spend your time and keep your mind out of commiserating over your situation by making tangible progress, learning new skills, collaborating with others.
Thanks for the answer!:)
I think of studying there. How do they treat new people? How do they live? And is there different studying methods then in eastern Europe?
And is there studying better compared to eastern Europe (what i mean is Poland, Ukraine, etc.)
I hope i answered good, my English isn't that great:)
subway
Dutch people very much stick to existing social circles. So unless you learn Dutch to a level where you'll comfortably be able to join in on conversations, you'll struggle to make meaningful connections with most locals. But in general, you won't be treated badly just because you're a new person to the country, and basically everyone can speak English, so having to learn Dutch isn't a must (although I'd highly reccomend it)
For studying methods, I can't answer that since I didn't personally go to university in eastern or western Europe. Fees will be higher, but other than that, I believe the quality of education and academic structure will be quite similar.
If you'd like to work in the Netherlands after you study, it's a good option since there's a reduced salary criterion for an HSM visa for the year after you finish your degree.
High and rising cost of living and housing crisis are two big things to also consider
While I agree that no preventative screening sucks, healthcare seems to mainly be an issue for expats from what I see expats complain about vs talking to Dutch people myself. Healthcare is different, and most expats don't understand that they need to be very direct about their symptoms and what they want with the GPs.
My partner (Who is Dutch) has had some specific health issues through the years, and for anything serious, wether the GP knew it was outside of their expertise or from a bit of pushback from my partner after symptoms weren't improving after the first visit, they get referred to and see aspecialist within a short timeframe
Partner has also lived in different cities in Netherlands, so this has been their experience with different GPs and not just one "lucky" GP
I would not consider it being too prideful if I've been to the GP with my partner before and directly seen them pushing back, asking for specialist, and getting referred
Givin up on computer science tbh
Too much too study amd for what
A hard time to find a job?
And not the highest pay
Rip
The Netherlands does also rank among top 10 countries in the world based on most metrics. So I do believe it's mainly expats who just don't understand the system and don't adjust their own approach
I think we're swaying a bit off of what would be career discussion though. I'd be happy to continue this discussion later today in one of the off topic channels
I'm in no way blaming expats. Just saying that I've seen it as a common trend from expats in online forums, but that doesn't seem to be the experience of the average Dutch person I talk to. In the same breath I can say it's condecending to call dutch people pridefull for not having the same issues.
Although I'm not an expat yet, I've spent a decent chunk of the past 3 years in NL, my partner currently lives in NL, and I will be emmigrating soon enough.
No, I have not seen a company doctor, but my partner has for burnout and had a good experience with the company doctor. Getting put on an integration plan, having checkups to make sure integration is going as planned, company doctor pushing back on my partner when my partner tried to scale up work hours too fast, and in the end fully being re-integrated into the company
I feel like it's kind of a universal trait that people don't take it well when foreigners criticize their country.
Thank you! I will consider it. Have a nice day!:)
Ohh I see. I think Dutch culture is very different
Yeah, I'm not saying it's a rational reaction. But I don't think it's particular to Dutch people.
What I mean is that I don't think there are many cultures with the characteristic of taking critcism of their country by foreigners well
So, not so much Dutch people are prideful, but rather, people are prideful
I mean, it's easy to say as someone living as an expat, but I wonder if an expat from elsewhere living in your country would say the same thing
I mean, your living experience makes you especially open-minded to these kinds of issues. But someone from your country who has never lived abroad may not be so open-minded. So you may not be very representative.
<@&831776746206265384>
Simply stating my own opinion 👍
Embrace free speech but only if its liberal. Nice
🤣
I'm not saying you're wrong either. I just don't think it's an especially Dutch thing.
Embrace diversity bro
Always
Sometimes a conversation is required just to figure out that you don't disagree with someone else.
Then I'll drive the convo a bit with a question. You said you were potentially moving to Denmark. Ignoring any reasons like healthcare and such, is Denmark specifically a better option for you in pursuit of being able to take long career breaks, or is there not much difference between the countries from that viewpoint?
Look sweden before and after mass migration
I like living here very much, thank you.
You're back! how has the job in the NL been working out for you?
Eat meatball 🧆
As a consultant I interct with very large companies as well and it's rough...
Am I allowed to train an AI on messages from this Discord
I'm not looking forward to switching companies. I'm currently at a big company, but it doesn't feel corporate at all. I know that's far from the norm for big companies though. Wish I could stay with them for another 1-2 years before I have to switch
Haven't worked at a startup though, so that might be a nice change of pace. I'd be interested in how it differs
😩😩😩 i have about a month to find new work before a 3x a week office policy kicks in
From what I've read I don't think it'll be a great match for me, but I won't knock it till I try it
My first job was a startup and i didnt really appreciate the lack of mentor/manager
Current job is a pretty big company with roles set in stone and i dont get to touch other parts of the product like ops
Need to find a middle ground
I'm at a medium-sized company and I feel like it's the sweet spot. Very little corporate red tape, but also stable and predictable.
No mentor/manager would have sucked for me when I started. I some friends from uni who had that and they hated it. I think I'm at a level where I would be fine without a direct mentor though
I don't like it when I need to coordinate 3-4 continents to get 1 feature done at very big corporate clients
What do you think about the site Leetcode
Internally we're medium sized, or even small depending on how you look at it. It's really nice. Get to do everything from infra to ML/AI to backend/frontend
No opinion, never done it 🙂
Do you like the C language

C for Career
Even Beethoven wrote all of his stuff in C, and he had a great career.
🧠
No, you are not allowed to train AI on any data you received from the discord API.
I am thinking of pursuing DS & AI for my Btech
Whats the job market for AI now and in 4 years?
Want to learn python to leave the sales world, hate it!! I sale tech and have to understand how to use it but want to create it! Zero python code experience. Looking for real resources of people willing to learn together, hold accountable, and eventually have a real mentor!
||He also wrote stuff in e.g. C# and even D||
or I have the opportunity to like minor in AI and take major in electrical
if my fortune telling was good enough to do that I wouldnt be working at all tbh.
you could atleast answer the "now" part.
is currently good although the bar of entry is rising to more than bachelors
often a masters/phd (for research roles) or very relevant/exceptional work during bachelors
To work in AI? Now is the time it seems
In 4 years? Hopefully these AI types fuck it up badly enough where we legislate against it
r*
Well the now seems failry obvious. AI is current hot topic and even at bandwagon levels. There are certainly plenty of opportunities right now for jobs in AI but the competition amongst those with deep degrees in data sciences so just lower level education or certification is not going to cut it well.
I am pursuing it in a cream college. Will i still require specialisation?
If I am already specializing why shouldn't I choose a broader core branch like electrical and then do MS in Ai or Mtech in robotics?
What are you guys worst code review expieriences during interviews?
robotics certainly would be a good choice im sure as well and would not be going away any time soon. At least up until the self aware AI figures out self replicating robotis and the world ends
as the interviewer or interviewee?
Im intrested in both but gonna be the interviewee in a few weeks
Well you could provide code in ike #1035199133436354600 or a topic specific channel and ask for a rerwview ahead of time if you want
My college has a very good employer reputation and it is also crem de la crem of engineering colleges
Will employers still look for MS or Mtech?
No i wanna hear bad expieriences to comfort me lol so i can t do it worse XD
well it would certainly boost the look of your education over other candidates. but I cant speak directly as I am not very close at all to the actual hiring side of AI fields
its not required no .
hiring a fresher from btech is different from hiring a fresher from mtech , both are fairly different things
people who fail miserably usually end up not getting selected
thats not exactly comforting imo
What about AI job offerings?
like what's your opinion on this domain? Is it just a bubble or is it here to stay and grow?
For me it is lol so j can hear the worst case XD
Yea I mean like. I dont have much in the way of code review but I have certainly done plenty of interviews where the person bombed real hard. some to the degree I even asked if they wanted to reschedule
dont know enough to give a solid opinion. but the tiem for AI seems to be "now" , dont know how it will look in 4 years honestly
im not a software engineer, im electronics engineer so i dont know that much in terms of jobs
What do you mean with reschedule?
Okay, no problem.
Like they are failing so hard I ask them if it is not a good time for the interview and basically would they like a 'redo'
But what is gonna change with a redo?
well , i had one classmate who knew nothing about coding , he appeared for interview , his interview was over after like 15 minutes after the interviewer understood he knows nothing . everyone else had interviews from about 1 hour to 1.5 hours. He thought he did amazing , then after he told them what happened , everyone laughed at him.
sometimes people have off days, like if you know your stuff but something went just catastrophic and you bomb out like stopping there to try again can make a real difference.
though in only one such case did it help at all, and most didnt take the offer but all in all it didnt get to that point too many times.
XD
that doesnt happen much or at all. if you bomb the interview , you are done , they have 100s of other candidates and they are not personally attached to you , they dont really care
"man I did so well I finished the interview in like 15 minutes!"
like trust me , they dont care enough about you to give you a redo of the interview
I wasn't saying to expect that, I was providing that as an anecdote of bad interviews I had conducted
And we def didnt have hundreds of candidates making it even to the interview stage in that case. It was also around that time that I had to give my employer some hard truths that people do in fact lie on resumes, lol
xdd
maybe was a common thing back in the day, intersting to know
They were not an American company so to them it was unheard of but here... lol and this was like 5 or 6 years ago I think, maybe 7-8
And I rarely do interviews these days, and only as a technical role (I am not a software engineer)
that sounds like it would increase risk. isn't having a stable job less risky?
What would be the purpose of the breaks exactly?
Wouldn't part time all the time be a better option? 4 day weeks is a 20% salary cut, but still very manageable on average software salaries, and you'd be at one stable job
Unless you're considering part time to be significantly less than 32 hour weeks
well
Well I dont think just switching jobs back and forth is the best way to work while not working tbh.
I mean what exactly kind of jobs are you expecting to do for just a year at a time?
But you say reduce risk, so by risk you mean becoming a 'corporte slave' and not like financial or career risk
because doing that is risky for both career and financial security
how does changing jobs every year and wokring part time in between reduce your financial risk?
I think you mean reduce risk in the context of 1 year part time vs 1 year of no work and not 1 year part time vs stable job, right @turbid bobcat ?
yea that is actually offensive because it provides no actual information and is just dismissive
I am bored but I wanna do program
I dont have ot be brainwashed to know that having a job, consistently, without interruptions to income, healthcare and stability is a good thing
I mean, you proboably dont but how does that translate to 'risk' you havent actually explained why this has anything to do with financial risk.
No, but that doesn't mean someone who wants to work 100% of the time is brainwashed. And it's definetly less risky to work 100% of the time, even if you do have the savings to support taking breaks
Beause even if you have low cost of living, interrupting your consistent high paying job does not translate to lowering financial risk
but if you work full time you dont lose any savings either
if they plan to take year long breaks, then working part-time during that break will be less risky than not
yes I am not saying that they cant but there isnt an explanation as to how that is lowering financial risk. perhaps its a language issue or something.
you said it yourself, having income is less risky than not. they are already planning on taking the break
I don't think anyone is pushing anyone to work 100% of the time here. Just weighing pros and cons of different options?
no one is 'pushing' you to do anything, we are asking you how you are explaining what you are saying. and it isnt about pre conceived antyhing. cosistency is literally consistent
well that makes more sense at least. If they are going to take breaks either way, maintaining a part time job in those breaks would indeed make sense. The way it ws presented at first it read that the justification to lower financial risk was to take breaks from full time work for part time work
Indeed, if you can manage lower income levels and want to take a break from a full time corporate job then trying to do part time work vs none at all would be a smart idea.
If you're able to find jobs in tech during the part time you'd also have a lot more leverage when negotiating for positions/salaries once you want to switch back to full time. You wouldn't be time pressed to take one of the first offers you get and would be able to be a bit more picky
IMO much of europe has better work culture than the US
I think the Netherlands is nearing 50% of its population working part time
But I stopped bending over backwards for my job a long time ago so my work life balance is much better
Though at the same time it was factors into my experience and work history that got me to where I am now in general. Im sure I could have made it more or less the same with less after hours work but it is what it is
I wonder how much of that is related to retirement age people. Because I know that can be a thing too
consider liking it
cant, am too lazy and bing tv shows
Yea I remember seeing that news. I mean what that actually menas does vary a good bit between country too. like in the US the retirement age is just mainly for income/tax reasons, not like you can actually stop working just because
so that sounds like a motivation issue more thanjust a career problem
yeaa
I think retirement age will keep increasing slowly as life expectancy increases across the globe. Especially in countries with strong safety nets and government pensions. If people are living longer, you need a slightly bigger workforce to support them
I'm expecting retirement age to be 4-5 years more than it currently is by the time I reach retirement
that is how it is, I just cant, focus enough, its like if my life was just focused on this one thing atleast I would get a career out of it
yea, same for the US in general. but also like Guitar said.
For me I suspect retirement age will be about the same, maybe a couple years later. But the big change will be the diminished social security payments
If someone's mentally capable at that age and still enjoy working, why not?
politics are NOT allowed here
sry, ill give you a better one, narayan murthy
And the retirement thing is certianly person dependent as well. My parents arent retired because of financial reasons. My dad is also still mentally fine though I wish he could retire for my mom's sake
my man wants 70 hr work weeks
I mean Id love 0 and id love/plan to retire early but still have a ways to go
If life expectancy is increasing, either taxes are going to increase, or pension age is going to increase to cover those costs. There's probably a few different ways to address it, but raising pension age is just one way of doing that
well everyone would but that is only true because everyone isnt doing the thing they love
Personally I'd like to retire a few years early, so my spending/saving habits will reflect that
retiring early is scary, what if you end up broke somehow by the end of your 50s
typically if you want to retire early you have done the math and know that you won't
It'll be nice once I'm in EU to have an actual pension grow. I've not been able to get one where I live since the Netherlands doesn't recognise our pensions as valid pension schemes. So I would have had to cash out early with massive penalties. Just been investing very aggressively
but why would you? wont you feel like you are purposeless for the rest of your life?
different people feel differently ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Work doesn't drive my purpose in life. Work makes me money so I can enjoy the other things I do in life
People have reasons for living outside of their career
you can do purposeful things in retirement.
I think it's good to have both. Max out pension as much as it is beneficial tax wise, and then invest whatever else you can/want to save
so what things?
just hobbies? or people? or both?
Personally? Travelling, hiking, mountaineering, experiencing other cultures (especially foods), personal dev projects, family, etc.
you can get involved in your community or do a "second career" that's fulfilling but low-earning
A lot of people retire to farming or teaching as well.
i dont have enough people with me. I have hobbies, but its just watching tv, reading comics, and that is all.
Having the time to get involved in local communities helping out school kids or less fortunate people would also be a great use of my time
hmm noicee
I would recommend improving on that, even if you don't plan on early retirement, staking your purpose on a job is often unhealthy.
it is? damn why so?
Yea, but I don't want to retire 20 years ahead of retirement age. I'm just planning on somewhere between 5-10 years. But yea, exact plans are very individual dependent
you could lose that job.
Since I like travelling now, that is money I could save to retire a few years earlier, but I'd rather travel now.
but then the same is true for all the other things as well
and outside of losing your job, it can make it hard to notice mistreatment and abuse you experience.
i did not understand that
oh that is true
fine, I guess I need friends, I dont get along with people in my college, so I have no idea what to do, I still spend time with my senior highschool friends, but that also ended today
If all you consider valuable in your life is having a job, you are much less prone to finding reasons to quit that job, even to your own detriment.
hmmm, truee, but if you think about it as a skill and not just about the job
yeah, becoming an excellent programmer is more reasonable purpose that will benefit from a job.
Is then "be an expert computer engineer" not enough of a purpose to answer the original question?
idk, ill have to think ig, not like just hearing it once will be enough for my mind
there is no shortage of ways you can develop your skill
That isn't my purpose, personally, just playing out the idea
but it is also losing its value man, I hate ai based coders, sure it can help alot, but yea maybe I can also drop this idea
if it were your purpose, would it matter whether people pay you for it or not?
but then that makes no difference in my life, I already dont follow it, I am careless a hell, and avg as well at most things
i wanted it to be something rather that I can abuse, for anything by that I mean power and pay and even more
Plenty of people find meaning and joy in developing skills that aren't economically feasible as a career
Sports is a great example ^
Hi im new i found this server from chatgpt can u say me from how i can learn phython in android??
not in my country, only cricket works here
i guess that is just money\
This channel is for career advice and discussion. Try #python-discussion
Ok thank you
did my coding in school on pydroid, its as usable as vs code but for learning try books like sumita arora and go to python discussion
I can assure you there will be clubs for smaller sports. I play squash. It's a very small sport in my country with no TV appeal and no professional players. I also want to start doing triathlons in the future. Also niche. I also want to compete in some powerlifting competitions in a few years, even more niche. All of these things do have communities if you look for them
maybe then Ill see about boxing? idk, I like punching bags
i do play badminton with my old friends but eh im not experienced enough at it
Other examples that aren't sports could be music instruments, competitive games, hobbies like woodworking. All stuff you can find joy at in developing your skills in it
ok, ty gotta have dinner, byee
Hey everyone! 👋
I'm Ayush from India, currently learning Python.I'm here to grow as a developer, build real- world projects, and hopefully start doing small freelance tasks.Looking forward to learning with you all!
Curious do people graduating from top university's liek uc berkely make more from schools of a lower reputation?
there seems to be a correlation but i would be hesitant to say there's a causation
A EU and Asia thing too
I'd expect a common root cause: rich kids are more likely to attend an ivy league school, and rich kids are more likely to become rich adults
yep
Hi every body, I am Mahboub, I am trying to find a career path in Data Analysis, I would appreciate it if some one who has experience in this fiel to provide me with some advice and help with some resources.
How can one get a job in Cyber Security with ease?
You don't
Wdym? No one does?
start with either a bachelor's in CS or cybersecurity or similar. the pins in #cybersecurity should have some additional resources
I would assume they were mostly referring to the "with ease" part of your question
if it were easy, everyone would do it
Where is the best place/platform to look for remote internships in IT?
yo
A job in fiber optics with a gas mask and in a clean room you guys think it's too dangerous or,m
hey
hey
gear you wear in a clean room is usually to protect the job from you, not you from the job
a gas mask might mean you're dealing with nasty chemicals
clean rooms are pretty safe places to work, generally speaking
I'm trying to decide whether or not I should take the job.
I'm thinking no because working with a gask mask for 8 hours knowing how anxious I am might be too much
Is it a gas mask or like a n95 mask?
a well run clean room is pretty safe usually, because being careless becomes a huge pain in the ass
and the things you have to do to not fuck up for cleanroom mostly align with the things you need to do to avoid contamination hazards for yourself
gas
if the mask is properly fit tested and properly rated for the hazards you're working with, then it should be plenty safe
im homeless omg im on a street of los angeles begging
both could be considered ivy league
they're elite, but Ivy is a more specific definition than that IIRC
is ivy league just "good uni" by your definition?
yeah and it was completely unrelated to tech/CS/SDE education etc
you not being aware of it does not mean it doesn't exist 😉
biased how? Because it doesn't fit what you want to believe?
We aren't talking here about a big secret. It's very well known, regardless of terrible it is as a practice
so now the goal post is moved to a relative difference that is large enough to the US and UK?
Beyond the salary, it also gets quite murky due to the impact of a professional network. Someone from school X is more likely to pull people from the sames school.
So besides salaries for the same position in the company being different based on the school, your professional network will also have an impact on your reach and jobs you would have access to. Obviously everything gets quite complicated and nuanced at that level
you forgot the part about:
#career-advice message
having concrete and relevant experience on both side, they are both more egalitarian than the other for different areas:
- EU has a better social net, which enables a better "baseline" in terms of education. But everything has a long history and with it comes traditions and prejudices
- US has less of a social net which makes it more difficult to get a degree. But jobs are less strict about the credentials and degrees, as long as you can demonstrate the relevant skills
So it's not one being better than the others, it's different
if I recall correctly, you haven't crossed the chasm yet into leadership or been exposed a lot to VCs and C-suite. Not meant as a disparagement, but it does mean you haven't had enough exposure to this side, which can be quite different
I would rather stay away from discussing your case as to avoid you taking everything personally
that doesn't change much in the US either
i think you're focusing on the "prestige" part too much. all it is that the quality of your network tends to be better at "elite" colleges
not to mention to go there in the first place, you're probably already from a wealthy family which already puts you a leg above everyone else
put all that together and on average, ivy league graduates tend to make more and climb in their careers faster than someone that went to just another state school or didn't go to college at all
yeah, there is a big difference when your network has random people comparing to your network having a VP at tesla, a director at paypal, a VC, etc.
thinking what? young people should still try very hard to get into top colleges
A degree is the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
The number of people who even have the possibility of getting into ivy is actually extremely small
doesn't mean you shouldn't apply
Get this: most people dont even live in the US + UK, nor want to.
i don't see how this is relavent. you should still apply and aspire to go to the top educational institutions in your country
no one said you cannot succeed without going to an ivy league
so you just got an urge. Okay
you should try to apply to the top educational institutions in your country, or the country you want to live in
i'm not sure how you misconstrued my original message to mean that
your urge had nothing to do with what was said. So it was quite confusing
not to mention to go there in the first place, you're probably already from a wealthy family which already puts you a leg above everyone else for networking
getting accepted by the uni is fine, would you expect someone not wealthy to accept it too?
i'm not understanding what you're saying
suppose you are not wealthy - would you still try for the top colleges and accept it?
when the primary incentive of the top college was "you will meet similarly wealthy people for good networking"
sure, everyone's financial situations are different and you may still be able to make it work. grants, loans, scholarships are all options
makes sense
you should try to max out all your opportunities as much and as far as you can
i wouldn't say that's the primary incentive. but education has always been a way out of poverty and to improve your life
indeed. geography is one factor most college students take into account when they're deciding where to apply
it's not controversial you do believe it.
However given the state of education, its funding and its direction, it would appear that it might not be the consensus
public universities are often on par or better than others in most countries except US
mostly better tbh, they're just more competitive to get into
aren't US public universities also really good? like the state flagships and such
not compared to the private ones afaik
Yes
there are more private than public universities in the upper echelon of schools, but all the top rankings include both. Schools like UCLA and Georgia Tech are public
<@&831776746206265384> identify theft services
!ban 1372901116647444480 scam/ad again
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied ban to @blazing timber permanently.
it's pretty much 50/50
depends on your threshold for the "top" and the ranking system tbh
but yeah 50/50 is still huge compared to other countries.
it's very often just straight up public > private in a lot of countries
you are thinking of a few highly-notable and known private schools. You are not thinking of the plethora of private colleges you've never heard of
https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=1122 there are roughly twice as many private schools as public
sure, although that wasn't really my point. US is one of the only countries where the top has private unis potentially outperforming public ones
nah, you're narrowing your claim. In any case, there are lots of really good public Unis in the US. Lots of good private colleges too. Public Unis probably have more consistent quality across the board than private schools
I think you're also not familiar with how those top private schools you're thinking of work:
suppose you are not wealthy - would you still try for the top colleges and accept it?
when the primary incentive of the top college was "you will meet similarly wealthy people for good networking"
The connections are part of the appeal of the top private schools, but many of them also have a lot of financial aid available, especially for people not coming from wealthy backgrounds
i never really claimed, nor do I think US public unis are anywhere close to not good
I didn't say you did, you did suggest tehy weren't as good as private
"not compared to the private ones afaik", "public universities are often on par or better than others in most countries except US"
however, MIT, CMU, harvard, stanford etc are private universities which are often counted as the top by certain ranking systems (also the general reputation)
that's exactly what I said above
you're thinking of a few outstanding, widely known colleges and painting the whole lot with that same brush
comparing that to asia (china, japan), switzerland etc - the "elite" is mostly dominated by public universities
which kinda feels like US is the exception here
public universities are often on par or better than others in most countries except US
mostly better tbh, they're just more competitive to get into
you're not getting into a private college poor
yeah
well, you can w/ loans, scholarships etc
not to mention harvard is a joke
people don't really see it as a joke
when you find out over 40% of kids are nepod in... its just to look good
Only 40%? Rookie numbers ngl
We are one of only nine colleges in the U.S. that is need blind and full need 01 Need blind means that we don’t consider your ability to pay for college in the admissions process; full need means we are committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need with our aid. for all of our undergraduate students, domestic and international. About six out of every 10 students receive MIT need-based aid. The median annual price paid by an undergraduate who received an MIT Scholarship was $12,93802 for the 2023–2024 academic year.
that they admitted to hah
i mean yoou can have any finaid you want that doesnt mean they are getting poor kids of the streets
Beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year, for families whose total income is less than $100,000 (with typical assets), parents are not expected to contribute toward their student’s MIT education.
Its not ivy league so there is hope
Well my dream uni has been mit for a while... hopefully it's good.
wait it's $12,938 AFTER the scholarships for a year? does this only include uni expenses or in general overall expenses?
You need wealth stats tho, not just income, im sure the rich people at harvard dont even have incomes
ah yeah
that means total amount they pay after assistance
pay to the uni?
Hello
damn, okay what is the average cost of a public uni w/ aid in the US?
I know kids that have gone to harvard, MIT, and some other ivys, and none of them come from rich families or have connections tot he school through alumni.
you can't usefully average that, you'd want to pick a state and look at their system
but 12k isn't unusual for total cost
UIUC for example? that is public, right?
lemme check
so like 4 people?
https://www.admissions.illinois.edu/invest/tuition Total: $36,930-$42,310
Tuition, Undergraduate Admissions, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
yes, which is pretty shocking considering I'm one person, in one small town. By your own message up there 60% of admissions aren't nepoed in.
this includes food, housing, supplies etc, right? were those counted in the mit stat too?
oh good, its 60% fair
Tuition & Fees: $18,046-$23,426 before any fin aid
the rest are paid in 🥴
MIT and "chill" don't belong in the same sentence
mayhaps
a lot of people have strong opinions about things they've never bothered to actually look into, which is weird.
(I can't speak to nepotism, I didn't go there)
Hey guys
So it's... not chill?
well, either way costs of US unis wasn't really my point - it's just that your taxes to pay for high quality education in public unis is often normal in most countries and they do deliver it
US being one of the only few countries where some private unis have subjectively better reputations than public ones
Can I ask a question
what is your point?
If i want to learn just python is it better to enter college or study on courses
its well established harvard is very sketchy in its admissions
Which is the channel where I can post questions
Ty
what's your goal with learning python?
Both
Why is there a LGBTQ flag behind the python in this server logo?
Everyone celebrates being gay in June, since entire June was declared month of Pride.
Different companies adopt this flag for entire June for the sake of not looking different from others in addition.
Cultural thingy, that became for some reason overextended for entire month.
P.S. we celebrate Pride, but we missed to celebrate months of Greed, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, and Sloth
You can also check #changelog

hi guys i'm new in this server btw
Hi new in this server btw, i'm dad
Hello and welcome to our wonderful python server.
out of curiosity, why did you come to this channel first? #python-discussion is the "default" channel, but I wonder if Discord secretly started listing this one first.
i came to that channel already btw

hi
I’ve made my most rookie mistake so far. I work for a tech consulting company and recently got an offer to fintech company as SWE II with ~1 YoE thru networking event. The offer is 2x my salary and a much better role.
I discussed with my manager about the offer so they said to not tell the client about it and said they couldn’t match it. I only worked for 1 client and they were very happy with my output and was also happy working there. After submitting my resignation and me signing offer, manager tells the client about me leaving so then client tells me that i should’ve told them first so they could’ve matched or offered better to make me full time at theirs…
Do you still have the new offer for 2x as much?
sounds like a great problem to have
imo its generally a bad idea to entertain counteroffers
If they could afford to pay you as much what held them back all this time?
would you prefer working for that client rather than this fintech company?
I think that if I knew about this conversion option my decision would probably be different for sure. Reputation wise they’re pretty comparable. New company is a little bigger but same enterprise environment. I guess the only thing is I like my team at my current client and the other teams I work with, and the projects were really interesting. There was no micromanagement or any typical workplace bullshit. I can’t say yet if it’ll be the same for new company but my feeling is that it will be similar.
My real issue was to do with my actual employer, there wasn’t a very clear career progression, no real timeline of when do employees get opportunities for pay rise, and a lot of the more senior people there have pretty negative opinions about the company
Already signed
Nice, thats great then, you should be celebrating
I see no mistakes.
However, you received new information. Keep the relationship with the client going, whether you decide to change you decision or not.
My advice would be to go have lunch with your client. No matter what: invest in the personal relationship.
Hell yeah. Definitely not burning any bridges. The future is bright
another interview brothers
that is 4 interviews over the past month-ish
well, i started applying the 23rd
so not even a month
why this server celebrates pride month bruh
#changelog message explains
Anyone know anything about Sales Engineer, the role?
I'm looking for a non-technical and tech-adjacent role and my programming has been slow lately and my current job isn't paying enough.
Sales engineer usually means someone with knowledge about a company's product offerings and who meets with engineers from other companies to figure out what products they need
guys, i'm looking for my first job in dev but , i'm have no experience in this area and im not of legal age do you have some tips?
it's usually lightly technical, I guess? Enough you know what the products are used for and what they can do
Do you have the ability to go study at university?
Code a lot go to college and be patient
I know someone at a company with sales engineer roles, I know someone at another company with sales roles. I have a computer science degree, but I don't wanna be in a situation where I use all my cards and end up with nothing like when I was walking dogs in this town full of rich people.
One thing that makes me KNOW I'm qualified for the job is that I started a comics business from nothing, and made 30k off of figuring out what my customers wanted.
No , it's still my last year in high school
Also, I did the sales aspect of my capstone project, like I can DO this.
I just need my resume to look GOOD....
Sales (which is different than marketing) has one of the smallest gaps between the skills needed to get the job and the skills needed on the job.
So keeping those people in your contact list is good.
I'm talking to both of them right now, actually.
One of them I ran into at Barnes and Noble yesterday, believe it or not.
The other, he told me to grab the job ID and send it to him.
You will not likely find any kind of software job in the last year you have before college (assuming you do intend to go, which is a good idea.)
The next piece of advice depends on whether you want a job because you need money or to prepare yourself for university/whatever's next
Hi everyone, I help early-career developers land jobs in competitive markets by providing tailored interview coaching and job search tools. If you’re interested in boosting your hiring chances, I’d love to connect and share more.
Or you could share some tips right here in this chat that people read to gain insight into the industry
He's trying to sell a course...
If that's the case then they're breaking the rules of the server. Old man was giving them a chance to....not do that lol
I'm just calling it right now, lol.
Work with entry- and mid-level developers to improve their chances of getting hired at tech companies — using a system that includes job searching, applying, coaching, technical prep, and guidance. It's fully legal, transparent, and optional.
how does one work with entry or mid level devs if theyre not employed already?
do you pay devs for their time to coach your clients?
Many things are legal, but not allowed on this server. Promoting your services is one of them, as you should know from reading the #rules
(well, to be pedantic, I don't think it (explicitly) explains the "why", but it does explain the "what")
@radiant vortex can we please go dms need some advice
if you insist
thanks
It’s going to take a lot of networking and luck to get a job out of high school. Look for small companies < 80 people, apply for local scholarships, go to local developer meetups (I know people who have gotten jobs from a monthly python meetup in my home city)
I personally found an internship out of high school following those guidelines, but it was massively based on luck. If you do manage to get your foot in the door and interview, you will need to have an extensive preexisting portfolio portfolio
What does "not of legal age" mean, exactly? If you're asking how to get paid to work but you're not legally allowed to work, that sounds like it violates rule 5
Hey everyone!
I’m an Italian Computer Engineering student and I’m trying to better understand how to break into the job market, especially in programming and Python. Honestly, I’m not quite sure how job hunting works in this field:
Has anyone here landed a job starting from online courses or bootcamps?
If so, which courses would you recommend for someone starting out or trying to build a solid portfolio?
Is it really worth paying for those expensive courses, or is it possible to get hired with free ones like Coursera, edX, or Udemy?
And if you don’t mind sharing… what was your path into the industry?
I’d love to hear some real-life experiences to get a better sense of which direction to take.
Thanks a lot to anyone willing to share 🙏
There are companies that interview self-taught peeps, mine did, unfortunately they were all pretty terrible
A bootcamp or an online course or a certificate wont really help you with the tech interview
What’s funny is when you go to university you’ll probably just be even more self-taught than the people who don’t
It was kinda sad, i really wanted to believe that the average self taught person can make it into the industry but they all froze on fizzbuzz of all things, we interviewed like 4 of these bootcamp people
(4 that I was present for anyway)
Did they have any personal projects to show off? If so, what were those?
University degree usually include at least one course on DSA which while not enough to get you to pass is enough to get you to think to practice this shit yourself
How are bootcamp peeps supposed to know?
The standard bootcamp type projects, weather app nonsense, some todo lists, some just had react project templates forked 💀
They made it to the interview but i dont think it was the projects that did it
I suppose a university at least gives you what to learn (that is, you find out what you don't know as opposed to being in the dark about what you don't know), but ultimately it's up to you to learn it
our intern this summer is a nepo hire, idk how i feel about that lmao
university equips you to know how and what to learn
surely one of the most medium takes I've seen in this channel
Its better than nothing
how have your interviews been going?
idk in college i grinded like a mfer and just did intership after internship
so far i got one rejection, but i got another interview today and just did one at 3:30 EST. that one i just did i think i made it to the next round. but i'm not gonna really think about it considering only 10 months of yoe
but, that's 4 interviews since the 23rd of may. which shows a lot of promise. 4 interviews since the 23rd shows i have something on there that's making employers go wait a mintue
hey, I didn't say it equips you with the "how" (it might to some extent), only the "what" (also probably only to some extent, but I didn't mention that originally either)
hello everyone
i am not slacking either cert wise - i'm doing the CFE (cert fraud examiner)
whats cert
certification
what kind of fraud
all the way from financial statement fraud to contract procurement fraud
"The CFE exam is divided into four sections: Financial Transactions and Fraud Schemes, Law, Investigation, and Fraud Prevention and Deterrence. Each section is a separate two-hour exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice and True/False questions. These sections cover various aspects of fraud examination, from understanding financial schemes to legal principles and investigation techniques."
I was more responding to what bschr said
whole idea is to get the CFE, stack it up with the CAMS, get my 7, my 24, and at that point i can do compliance for any firm
i'll be the most overqualified associate there is in the game
I don’t know any boot camp people, but I’d say half the university students have the same nonsense todo list react template projects lol
Yea i saw that too, except they also had their final year project on there
They usually did better in the interview though
the bootcamp level self-taught SWE job market is nearly gone
I feel far more confident in my job security in a position that uses the full suite of computer science theory, rather than my previous one as a full stack web dev
One interview I have coming up I was told will be general problem solving, and not live coding or leetcode. I was told I wouldn't need to prepare but not given much background. Anyone have any experience with this kind of interview? Is it system design?
Possibly? But there's a number of different types of problem solving questions. 'How would you mount Fuji' type questions
A lot of them all follow typical patterns and are fairly easy to practice for: listen to the question, ask clarifying questions (to show that you're not quick to leap to conclusions), restate the problem to make sure you understand it - identify any assumptions or unknowns, etc
oh like those hypothetical scenarios like what would you do if you were stuck in a blender?
Sure, that's another funny one
But the point of these types of questions is to have a conversation with you, and for you to show problem solving maturity. Not for you to try to be the smartest in the room.
that makes sense. im glad i asked because otherwise i would be pretty caught off guard if thats what it ends up being. thanks for the heads up
It could range from abstract problems to decomp to system design
Another classic abstract one / category is the 'how many piano tuners are there in the US?' type
that one is considered decomp?
No, more abstract problem solving
i like those because theres almost no wrong answer its just being creative
whats decomp?
The piano tuner type (estimation) is really about seeing how you'd think through a problem and construct a plan of attack
The Mount Fuji type is a little higher level, about requirements and assumptions and engineering
Decomp is, to me, a subset of system design questions. The idea is to frame a complex problem that you need to break down. That's more or less the common theme with all of these: once you get past the first part (clarifying the requirement), you usually need to break them problem down

https://www.codechef.com/practice/html is this good to practise html/css or any better alternative?
its fine
i had used freecodecamp practice problems on their site
and this is not the correct channel to ask these kind of questions
hey guys, just a noob question. what would be some solid stuff to put on my portfolio? My professor compelled us to complete several courses, just to put them certificates up there. But I dunno, I find it kinda lame. I dont really study from courses, rather from just writing and breaking shit and researching along the way, but perhaps I could get some advice or anything?
If I want to hire someone to do some frontend or just use tools, I can hire a self taught or bootcamp for half your cost (usually even less).
So I want to see that your 4-5 years to get a BSc aren't for naught and you know a great deal of theory and your ability to handle complex problems. For instance, I would rather see someone implement a query planner for a DB, a compiler or paxos for a distributed system rather than another frontend/todo app
Take any of your class and crank up a project to 11

any projects that helped you irl / solve a real world problem , doesnt matter if its not a complicated project

Soo iam from india, and iam from what we call a tier 3 university here (Bacially uni's that dont that much of a reputation). I just wrapped up my second year and i was wondering wether doing a masters in CS would be worth it. Now i dont want to do a masters just for that. i also do enjoy cs as a subject The question is more of, "should i do a masters or keep working and try to get promotions etc there. Would sinking all that money in a masters in cs be worth it" and if so whats the best way to perp for it. I do have an internship running and i am also in line to work on a research paper with one of my profs. but yah its pretty confusing
Assuming you want to keep working in India after graduating, because of the emphasis placed on university tiers, if you can get a masters from a tier 1/2 university, it would probably have a bigger impact on your career prospects than working for the year. I would think it's worth it if you don't mind continuing to study. If the masters is from a tier 3, it's a bit more uncertain and I don't know India's job market well enough to advise for or against it
a masters in CS from tier 3 uni is not worth it imo
you should aim for a tier 1 university . to get into such a university , you have to appear for an entrance exam called GATE.
i was thinking masters abroad
oof
abroad where
not really sure i was thinking one of the asian countries so Korea, japan singapore etc etc
get the degree and either settle down there or work for a couple years and return
If you do your masters in a country you'd like to work in as well, that's a good option. There's generally less requirements to start working after a masters in a country than just emigrating without studying in the same country
you should go to a career counseller or someone who already has already done what you want
and explain to them your whole situation. asking for such advice on discord server is not the best option
btw whats your current GPA ?
iev managed to keep up an 8.5 so far
not bad. should be 9.2 - 9.3+ given what you want to do , but not bad
i was just looking for opinions, in my experience hearing from a bunch of people comes handy
So computer communication engineering is worth than computer science engineering studying in India I am student and best to choose what degree for my higher studies in India what your thoughts
yep but its not a "solid" advice and you cant really use it in your life
not saying that what people here say is useless, but its not a solid advice in your case because we know so little about you
a big part of doing masters abroad also involves a good assessment of your academics ,your financial conditions , risks etc
yep its definately doable. All i am saying is , if you are actually serious about doing it , you should see a professional and not just rely on advice from people on discord.

Hyy! I've just passed 12th nd deciding to persue engineering in cs or robotics, but am confused what to pursue nd also if i choose robotics which i have more intrest in it so, what can I learn in beginning level??
you should pursue what you're more interested in. unfortunately i don't have any robotics resources to give you. if you can find a robotics server, they will most likely be able to point you towards some good ones
the pins in #microcontrollers is probably the closest you're gonna get on this server

hey guys, i am working on a SaaS web app and I have almost finished it. It is basicly a cancer-prediction web app that has a custom trained and optimized machine-learning model in the backend. You enter some data like smokind and alcohol habits, height and weight etc and it tells you the chance of developing cancer in the future and what are the possible risks for you.
I want some honest and brutal feedback. Do you think people would be interested? If anyone can help dm me

Hello, I’m getting interested in quant finance. I’m a 2nd yer BcS Applied Math student and I was looking for recommendations of projects I could do in the summer that combined Python+Math+Finance. Any recommendations?
can someone review my resume im trying to break into cyber security
Go ahead and post it.
Generally speaking, when you ask for help online, it's best for everyone if you give all the info someone would need to start helping.
yes @stoic surge
lmk what u think
lmk what u think
I think you have a solid foundation, but some work is required.
I would highly recommend getting some good python projects on there, not necessarily focused on cybersecurity - a lot of cybersec is just comp sci (most importantly how systems and applications work, not dsa)
wireshark and sql db are much more powerful than html/css and troubleshooting networking on a pc
Would also recommend having some focus on formatting. some people don't care and that's fine, but I would- beware of whitespace lines, excessive sized tab/margin, gap whitespace, and how linkedin/github is formatted at the top (feel free to check my resume)
All in all- first skim I didn't see anything interesting which is concerning because you do have some good stuff on there, prioritize it! good luck!
also if you're in an ivy league, pls reach out :))
In terms of formatting what would look better for the structural hierarchy of the resume? For example should I list certificates first then projects etc
how did you get over a 4.0 gpa
Weighted to 5.0 my unweighted is 3.7
thats still rlly good u should be proud
instead of saying what you used to make the websites
talk about like what sort of a website it was bc like theres more to websites than just writing the code it takes a real eye for design, what did the website have on it?
boo
Low-key it was class assignments I did a while back
also does ur college have career advisors im sure u could get em to look at ur resume even tho u already graduated
When I go to orientation 😂😭
I did not graduate college I’m an incoming freshmen 😭😂
oh wtf incoming freshman ur on a good path
put your contact info, linkedin/github, education in the header along with your name
then professional experience, projects and finally certs/skills if you don't have anything else to write
at the end of the day, the most important/impactful thing should be at the top of the resume
i thought u graduated wtf i need to go to sleep 💀
which uni
but yea like instead of it being what do you know it's like what sorts of results did u get and how did u go about it and what did you use. i think.
Not ivy
bluds boutta pull out MIT
Sadly
I think it’s bad since all these experiences and projects are on 2025 there almost all from cert labs and acitivities
grind projects boi
if u dont have any ideas for stuff don't worry but yea if u have time try finding things u wanna do
That’s what I’ve been doing the last month 😭
my github isnt fucking 24/7 green like those mother fuckers and i somehow got a job xdddddddddddddddddddddddd
yeah you have plenty of time as an incoming freshman
but yea if u do something u wanna share with the world put it on github (AND be sure to keep track of everything with git bc yea)
I need to defy the odds of what they say about the so called comp sci majors
learning how to use git is super duper epic awesome u prolly don't have to use the command line git right now
Yea it’s linked on my resume
r3wind be sure to put on deodorant and u may be a step ahead of the rest
I don't like the stats really. I believe most unis don't properly prepare cs students for the job market.
Being in cybersecurity already makes it tricky because the job market is already a lot smaller (I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm just saying it's smaller and pays less). Cybersec isn't a booming market, nor it will be any time soon. law and research in cybersec are pretty much the only "hot" things nowadays
Imma just cert max the next 4 years
i graduated in computer engineering and it took me nearly a year to find a job
Scary
and i had internships
its rng ..... .. . . . ... .. . ..... . . . . . . . . . . ... also 2029 may be better for the job market (if the ice caps haven't fully melted and humanity isn't in full blown war)
certs can certainly help you but actually knowing your shit just blows everything else out of the water.
but yea expanding on my point about your resume, instead of being like "used wireshark to analzye packets" maybe u could talk about what you were analyzing, like were u trying to debug something (or i mean like if that was also an assignemtn then idk )
Certs, projects and internships the way to go
stuff like that
cs makes me so demotivated. I have an unpaid research internship in cybersecurity for this summer and I'm questioning life right now. (just finished first year of undergrad)
yea thatts some bull shit
These unpaid internships are just unpaid labor
if you literally just know your shit, you don't need certs and internships.
and the type of places not paying interns probably have a garbage culture too
"an internship is an internship" is what I tell myself to sleep every night
like the thing about that is like if an employer uses like brainfuck for the production code then they can't be expected to get ppl that know brainfuck
but if u were able to pick up and apply malbolge at an internship, and you can describe the sorts of things that u did there and issues you had to solve, it shows to potential employers that u are able to know more shit
interviews are another layer of bs nonsense I HATE INTERVIEWS I HATE STAR METHOD
One day I'm gonna have enough money to make a company which operates entirely in brainfuck
yea nice talking to yall im going to go to bed. i project this yea im so experienced persona but i do not know muc of anything. and also it was nice talking to yall for the "joining python server to ask a question then leaving once i get the question answered" song and dance :D

!indent
Indentation is leading whitespace (spaces and tabs) at the beginning of a line of code. In the case of Python, they are used to determine the grouping of statements.
Spaces should be preferred over tabs. To be clear, this is in reference to the character itself, not the keys on a keyboard. Your editor/IDE should be configured to insert spaces when the TAB key is pressed. The amount of spaces should be a multiple of 4, except optionally in the case of continuation lines.
Example
def foo():
bar = 'baz' # indented one level
if bar == 'baz':
print('ham') # indented two levels
return bar # indented one level
The first line is not indented. The next two lines are indented to be inside of the function definition. They will only run when the function is called. The fourth line is indented to be inside the if statement, and will only run if the if statement evaluates to True. The fifth and last line is like the 2nd and 3rd and will always run when the function is called. It effectively closes the if statement above as no more lines can be inside the if statement below that line.
Indentation is used after:
1. Compound statements (eg. if, while, for, try, with, def, class, and their counterparts)
2. Continuation lines

2. Tabs or Spaces?

Do you NEED a degree kn CScience to get a job? I mean everything about CS is available online and many successful develipers havent gone to CS university
I think these Computerscience “MAJORS” and “PH.D” are a big joke
A degree is the path of least resistance. Here's a short breakdown that's in the pinned messages as well:
#career-advice message
And if you think it's a joke, the conversation here is an anecdote from someone who recently interviewed a few people who were self taught. TLDR: All the self-taught people were terrible at the interviews:
#career-advice message
Hmm
I mean but can’t you just leaen everything online? Not to brag(this isnt anything to brag about), but i can do stuff that people in their 2. Year of college cant do yet
It's possible to learn the same via self study, but university gives you a structured course on what you need to study. When you go the self-learning path, you don't know what you don't know. University guides that, is a great place to build a network for future job prospects
And the uni grads can probably do stuff that you cant do yet. There's a lot of knowledge out there. Of course uni isn't going to teach you everything
its not so much about what you can learn, its that the jobs youre applying to have 1000s of applicants, and a very natural filter for them is to drop anyone without a degree
Ooh yeah, that makes great sense.
I am actually majoring in Pure mathematics, as I have always loved math, just abt to complete my first yr, My current plan is to become a research mathematician, but It's just things are getting worse in my family and it might happen that I need to get a job within 2 years, um I dont know but I know a little bit of python and C , but I am really good at mathematics
so I don't know what should I do, one more thought is there that after 2 years I will go for PhD math, there I will get stipends and all so may be I dont need to geta job but am realllly not sure
but where to start from like what should I learn?
how about outlier?
I am learning python ....m not veryyyy good at it
how are you learning?
its a company which trains AI in advanced math
um gfg, w3schools, gemini2.5 and yeah google
you might have an easier time with a course like harvard cs50p, or a book like automatetheboringstuff (free). its also important to work on lots of projects to internalize the info
so my best best is python?
and other stuffs in data science? like data science is gonna be a potential careeer in future that wont be affected heavily?
i switched my major in CS to business analytics, and now i work in financial compliance. trust me you can pivot.
it doesn feel hard to me, its just it's hard u know to adapt ....like ahh
trueeeee....especially with all those topological stuffs
but i understand, and I will try to become like this, adaptable to situations
trueee :((
umm....but u are i guess such a person who can handle things well
hi guys, i wanted to learn python and really understand it and be able to do everythiing with it, i cant find someone who explains python in a understandable and easy way, can you tell me who can i watch and learn from?
i understand, but yeah what can we do, life goes on
Start with checking these out: #python-discussion message
i basically only want to pursue computer science in my lifetime since it's one of the things i'm really passionate about, and i had a question about some of the other subjects that are about to be behind me that i had to go and study, specifically my sciences and how important they'd be in my later life.
i figured physics would be somewhat important because it would help if i wanted to do something in game dev (which is pretty obvious how it applies). chemistry and biology never stuck out to me because literally when am i going to use the reactivity series or how homeostasis is maintained, in a career about databases or whatever.
even in a starter retail job at a co-op like idol, i highly doubt that any of this is necessary. that's why my plan for my final few exams in the three sciences is to just get a barely passing grade and call it a day. there's literally no way in hell i'm gonna put these down for my a-levels anyway so whats the point?
can someone confirm or disprove my beliefs? thanks a ton lads
!warn 742671689942302811 Your message was removed for containing advertising.
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied warning to @golden fable.
physics and the entire math series you take are useful. biology has its uses in the work force, computational biology is a massive field and you might even get a research position with a bio professor during school. Not sure about chemistry.
Never plan to get a barely passing grade though— plan to get the highest grade possible, and work for it. worst case you do get a C
I know a computational chemist. You don't hear as much about it as computational biology, but it's out there
isn't physics basically the same as maths? like if i do maths i'll basically be covered for a good majority of physics. and like i said, i'm hoping for none of my A-levels to be related to science, so really and truly, what is the point?
about computational biology, i was never really interested in biology in the first place so that's most likely not a career i'd take
as for the "barely passing grade", again, this is basically a one-off exam. i just need to pass and that's it: i can leave all that shit in the past. so what's wrong with settling on a mediocre grade?
isn't physics basically the same as maths? like if i do maths i'll basically be covered for a good majority of physics
math is the underlying tool yes. however you need to know how to convert your physics problems into mathematical ones .
lets say you are supposed to find out the gravitational pull. sure , if you are given all the values and formulas , you can do the math. But you have to know how to get the values , what logic to apply , which formula to use all by yourself
when people say "physics is just maths" , what they mean is, to solve the problems in physics , they have to be great at maths as well.
so physics is basically 2 subjects in 1 . the physics theory stuff , and the maths that you have to apply. so if anything , its twice as hard
well if the exam scores wont matter , why even think about the exam result in the first place ?
they matter cuz i need them to get into college, but after that, it's worth less than a bag of pebbles
then you need to put aaside the attitude of "i will never use chemistry later in my life"
because your current immediate future depends on it
and you should get very good grades and aim for the best score possible
i mean if i understand correctly
more marks = better college = most likely a good future
less marks = bad college = most likely a bad future
so why would you aim for less grades in the first place
the thing is, i literally just have to pass. 50% will get me into college so i'll be fine anyway
but not all colleges are same and the quality of college is extremely important, at least where i am from (india)
hm i see
well i've already selected a college to go to so it probably wont matter in the end anyway
Just in general, you should aim to learn everything you're taught. You never know what opportunities might come up as a result of you knowing some particular piece of information. Aiming to just barely pass a test is short term decision making that will potentially be stealing opportunities from your future self
if you had already made your decision
was all this discussion just a pointless exercise 💀

the stuff is there for a reason for you to learn
just do the best of your abilities
aiming for the bare minimum when you have potential is potentially harmful mindset
unless its java /j
Should I contact the recruiter on LinkedIn for the Internship I'm applying to? If so, what could I see so that my odds of getting the Internship improve?
recruiters are interested in getting the best fit for the role in the company - not to fit a person into a role.
If you think you're a good fit, make your case! If not...
....the question was about an exam that decides what college they go for to get their degree.... what does the work force have anything to do with this
Reaching out and networking does help. It isn’t guaranteed to make a meaningful difference. But in general, getting through, by knowing people, is the best.
But you have to go into it, not expecting anything.
also -- "university recruiters/recruiting manager" is a thing wherein people are generally more focused on students and internships
grades dont matter 🙊
first grade, first college, first job?
In this case better grades directly translate to a better college which is grounds for the start of a better future. Just get bare minimum to get in any college is a terrible mindset. You absolutely grind and get the best possible score to ensure you go to a college that gives you great chances to excel
grades matter to get a good college in most countries;; most majors/jobs would also prefer you to have a good gpa. compsci is something you can get a good job without a good gpa but its the exception, not the rule
It is specifically different in India which doesn't apply to the rest of the world.
they did mention it in one of their earlier messages and the college entry system is India is unique, the educational and societal norms are fucked in regards to college
Getting good grades usually translates to getting better college in every part of the world
thats not true
I got like 70% in 12th boards cbse, 80% rest of the years and I got into cornell for cs
Those are not "barr minimum" grades , which was the whole point of the conversation
bro those are minimum 💀
Bare minimum in the case we were discussing is to get into any college which is surely not 80%
Anyways , if u like sticking to bare minimum and hope nothing goes wrong , great. I like to try the best I can so I leave nothing to chance and don't have to later think that "if only I tried more instead of settling for the bare minimum"
Don't lose focus of what actually matters while you're "trying your best" to achieve whatever.

Hey I need advice for entering the tech field without college and only certs
Why would you do that? College makes things much easier
because i cannot afford it
even with grants, loans, and scholarships? federal aid?
have you run the numbers?
im not familiar with the process of getting those tbh, im kinda clueless about certain things
i can't point you to any resources unfortunately but im sure there are many online
are you in the US?
yeauh i think certs is the way to go. and yes i am
FAFSA is good and I got my certificate with a FAFSA grant
what cert did you go for
Automotive Mechanic
community college is great, I’d recommend going for network engineering if that interests you
tbh i want to get into ai field
My certificate was in a community college
You’ll need college and a lot of it for anything interesting in AI.
damn....
IT field?
Network engineers are incredibly important and you’ll be making at bare minimum 70k a year after only 2 years of community college
nah im deadset on ai. i might look into some transfer programs
im in massachusetts so im trying to go to a good school if im going to havbe to go to college
You're incredibly poor, you have no idea how to get financial support, you can't afford college so you were gonna rely on certs a moment ago, but you're not willing to compromise on going into AI?
it's not uncommon for a lot of AI jobs to need a master's as a minimum
yeauh i looked into alot of jobs and its true
being poor does not preclude you from going to college. we have systems in place for exactly that
it will be easier to figure out how to go to college than to get a job without one
ah i see. i think my best bet is a transfer program
transfer from what
community college, they have really good transfer programs here. i could transfer to BU for example at a much reduced tuition and possibly go for grants etc.
sounds like a good idea
you can also work other jobs for a bit to save up some money to cover what your aid won't
yeauh true
you just need enough for one academic year
you can work full time over the summer and rinse and repeat with aid
thank you guys
good luck
shit, my ex's dad got a severance package. rip.

hi, I'm honestly struggling to learn how to get career ready for cs
a lot of guides I checked online felt vague, confusing, or would just have me going through a sequence of tutorials
and then Iwhen went to my university cs discord and they said just to do projects and leetcode and kinda just do whatever
the issue is I'm just really lost and don't know how to go about any of this
and I'm runnning out of time since I just finished my freshman year of college
and then Iwhen went to my university cs discord and they said just to do projects
this is pretty good advice. i don't think you need to try to maximize learning efficiency at the start. just start working on stuff, regardless of what it is
Hello Everyone.
My name is Benjamin Smith and I'm from Singapore.
I'm a dedicated and seasoned senior full stack developer with a strong foundation in modern web technologies.
My career spans with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React.js, Vue.js, Angular.js, Next.js, PHP, Laravel, Python, Node.js, Express.js and Shopify.
I want to work with everyone.
idk many guides online have said something like "follow these languages/tutorials/courses in this order" or visit these websites or answer these questions
and that's what I kinda internalized
yet it always felt hard to put any of it to practice
i agree with Robin. Doing projects is really good advice.
i can clarify how to seek which projects u could do in this article https://darklab8.github.io/blog/choosing_pet_projects.html
i would also recommend eventually learning a bit of unit testing and code quality in general
https://darklab8.github.io/blog/favourite.html#UnitTestingPrinciplesPracticesandPatterns
https://darklab8.github.io/blog/favourite.html#TestDrivenDevelopmentByExample
https://darklab8.github.io/blog/favourite.html#CodeCompleteAPracticalHandbookofSoftwareConstruction
Regardless which software dev part u will take, it will not hurt to write more maintainable code
Seek what drives u, to find out which projects u wish to do
Seek different communities of users / remember which communities u are part of
That will help u to understand which projects u could do
I made my projects just for gaming modding communities for example 😄
For a start, start with just trying different user interface projects as a choice.
Try some CLI interfaces, TUI interfaces, Web, desktop, mobile ones.
with knowing how to work with them, u will have ideas where to apply them
A bit of understanding to technologies helps towards realizing what u could do with it
to put into perspective, I've done so much researching, thinking, and hesitation before I even started
all of them have their own opinions and own orders. it doesn't really matter, you just need to be doing something
and all that time could instead have been put towards doing something, and you'd be somewhere instead of nowhere. it's a common problem, really, that people are too obsessed with finding the perfect way to get started instead of just getting started
but assume I basically have no programming experience
how am I going to do projects with no practice
and now we're back to vague territory
!res
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.

Ah it kinda seems suspicious
you should be aware that we don't allow recruiting in this server though. other than that, welcome 😄

that's the thing, what do I learn?
where do I stop?
how much do I need to learn?
what do I do next?
How do I make sense of all of this?
there's just so much vagueness, I can't even start
it doesn't really matter. you can just do whatever you want
pick one of the books in that link above and follow along with it
thank you
Freshmen year? Well... i can tell you that simple technologies people figured out even if they did not have Software dev education.
Simple tech, making some crappy web stuff (I am backend web dev and actually happy about it) people made with learning in relatively short time.
Being Freshmen will only mean that u need to input TIME towards trying some technology
And Being Freshmen will only mean very high chance that your first result will not be of a good quality at all.
But it is okay
Building stuff helps us to learn building quality
Without building crap, we can't learn quality.
And if u wish to speed up doing more than crap... i recommended the books to increase code quality, and my comments on the site left recommendations what to read next.
TLDR: It is more of a just TIME, and whatever extra u will put into self studies and learn a bit of core software engineering on top preferably in order to make smth more than crap eventually 😄
Hello
Most of the stuff is not a rocket science in software development, and everything has "Getting started" good tutorials how to proceed in any direction. That freshmen in a uni can follow
And from there only time and experiments to build smth, and plenty of careful debugging
Every tech is mostly... simple to figure out eventually at least as long as use modern enough, not outdated versions of smth
if u use smth very outdated / very not supported, then all bets are off regarding its difficulty 😅
And as mentioned code quality stuff often asks to read books preferably.
Is data analytics is also field of IT ??
IT means something different in the US. i think it means different things in diffierent countries so you'll have to specify
this is the exact sort of thing that's made me stuck for all these years tbh
not having a concrete idea of what I'm doing just doesn't work with me
I don't know how others do it
that's why every guide I've seen or any time I asked for help just felt like nothign was changing
even now, I don't know what to do, and even if I do, I don't how to go about it, I don't know what to do next, and I'm just really confused and lost overall
it's been quite frustrating
read A Byte of Python, follow along with it
there's your first step
do that, come back and ask what to do next
I have learnt basic python ,pandas matplotlib and seaborn what should I learn after that ?? For find job
work on some projects for your resume
Read eventually code complete
It is ultimate book about all aspects of software development, overviewed through chapters.
Including what to do if u are Freshmen and not knowing how to start writing code at all 😅
This book has plenty of recommendations what to read next.
This book is may be too soon to recommend though, may be u ne dactually one of Head First books actually first as they are easy entrypoint to get started with some language at least
Pick language u like more and get started with it through Head First, it is quite brain friendly 😋
when do I stop
and honestly I feel like just taking tasks from this server might not help either
how do other people do it?
I seriously feel like the only person who's stuck like this
they just make it work without constantly contemplating about it
when do I stop
whenever you want to
how do other people do it?
people just do it. you don't need to maximize efficiency, it's just a waste of time and you won't get anything out of it
Be aware though that with some languages, certain type of software is easier to write than others
Do small research, what kind of stuff u wish to make first and which technology suits it better than others
And pick the technology better fitting the goal preferably
Making web app in Assembly for example, or in C is not the best idea
Picking right tech makes stuff 20 times easier
Some languages are very multipurpose about where they can be applied
But that can't be said about every language being very multipurpose
you just need to be doing something, whatever it is
the only wrong thing to do is to do nothing
so should I essentially just do whatever and I'll eventually make it work?
sure, fantastic idea
Yeah, whatever u wish. Personal apps, mods for games
Whatever u wish. As long as u are enthusiastic and having energy to dedicate time towards it, that alone matters.
It would be very nice if what u picked to learn was somehow job marketable though, at least in moderate enough numbers (instead of almost no job vacancies at all to the chosen stuff)
Then invested time will have more useful return for you
That's a stone towards Haskel language that has like 12 job vacancies in entire world or smth 😅
So completely do whatever is not the best approach since human lifetime is finite. And best to pick smth that other software devs use and there is at least some approachable amount of job vacancies related to the tech/stuff u chose, preferably.
Then time invested into getting comfortable with the chosen tech will just have more useful return for you
they seem to have a lot of indecision so i really just want them to do something instead of piling up more things to think about
having certainity in direction is a good thing to have too
@proper plaza so my advice... think of what languages/tech/whatever interests you
Open local hiring web site and make searches how many job vacancies are present and related to stuff u picked to work with.
Pick smth having reasonably non zero job vacancies and languages/tech having most interest to you at the same time
That will be useful investments to pick
Clarification:
If smth has larget amount of job vacancies, it does not mean it is the best pick. Plenty of super popular choices have... plenty of extra problems on top
Just make sure your pick has moderately good enough numbers and it interests you. Don't chase largest numbers as obligatory
wrong channel. sorry.
so currently I'm trying to learn a language and I already reached a common pitfall
when I search a basics tutorial, I get a 4 hour video or a terribly long article
I highly doubt I need all of this for the basics or before starting projects
And it's vague parts like this that really keep me stagnant
I'm so tired of guides telling me "in order to get out of tutorial hell, you gotta do projects" then they proceed to promote some overly detailed 6 hour tutorial for you to do before any projects
that never made sense to me
what language are you trying to learn ?
I don’t want to share it just because I want to advice for what to do in general, regardless of the language
This problem is part of the overarching vagueness and confusion that kept me stuck and basically make no progress to get career ready for cs
In terms of career, a degree is the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
Hello I am new I had a question as a comp sci major
do you want to share it?
just use a decent source for learning the language
a long tutorial is not necessarily bad as long as you learn from it in parts and apply it as you go
for example , we recommend corey schafer on youtube . he has a playlist for python. if it was a long video made of stitched together videos , it will still be a good resource. but you have to know that you shouldnt finish it all in one sitting as that will just make you not learn anything.
and after you learn , you need to make projects. thats pretty much it.
and as to why i asked for language ? so that someone can recommend you good resources if they know any
I highly doubt I need all of this for the basics or before starting projects
4 hours of video content is a good mark to learn the basics of language . you cant be like "oh i learned one concept , let me make a project using that" because you know nothing when you are a beginner.
like , you cant learn the
Heyya!!! I’m learning Python to get into machine learning and AI dev. I’m looking for a fast, practical way to build real projects while learning—less traditional tutorials, more hands-on + project-based. Any repos, courses, or strategies you’d recommend that really helped you level up?
If you want to learn machine learning, have you used kaggle.com?
i've js started it! lotta guys recommended freeCodeCamp, never tried kaggle!!
Kaggle is primarily for machine learning rather than programming
If a minor signs an NDA given by a company, is it voidable?
contact your lawyer. But indeed, they may be something to be argued about them not being able to sign any paperwork

Hey guys I am available for UNPAID internship or work in python ( I can do anything with this ) let me know anyone is need any help or something. I just need some experience in work field
!rule work
and look for internships that pay you
petition to revise the rule to say "paid or unpaid"
(eh, what do you think we do in this server 😄)
why would you go for an unpaid internship and not just pick up an open source project btw
well, ig different sections on a resume
professional experience > oss project
You also can't advertise here (for any kind of position, whether paid or otherwise). This is not a board to post these kinds of requests.
Videos aren't known for quality and depth
Articles have limited amount of material
Read o Reilly/packt books to advance with some language
(Besides the mentioned projects)
Books have structured materials way more in depth. 100 times deeper
Are you a professional if you cant get paid work?
(not that people would know really if an internship is unpaid)
It's experience in a professional environment
But it doesnt seem to me that the experience an unpaid position offers is any better than OSS, otherwise it'd be paid
That would be a non-sequitur.
Assuming you are shitposting, would that meet the definition of https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/professional ?
It might be the exact same experience, just that you don't have the leverage to negotiate a salary, I guess
OSS is a method of development, not a business model.
As such, it would not be related to experiencing SDLC in a professional environment nor having to deal with production environments or with customers in geenral
For completeness, you could get OSS experience in an internship while getting professional experience. And that would be great as well.
And it would still bit any OSS experience you might have on your own in a non-professional environment
A key characteristic of a profession is it pays
Regardless, would an unpaid internship offer the same experience of the profession as a paid one? Being paid means you've convinced someone along the chain of command that you are worth them parting with some money for services
People consider them out of frustration but are they as helpful as they think or is it just a waste of time
you can put an unpaid internship on the work experience section of your resume, which i feel is the most important section
i think they are debating if "does a unpaid internship hold the same value as a paid one"
yeah it's a different section ig; there are labs/groups you can join to collaborate on OSS projects though, especially ones without already existing major repos
oh i thought this was the original question
The bar is not being paid or not. The bar is someone willing to bring in a student who knows nothing about life and willing to deal with the cost.
So an unpaid internship is costly and a paid internship is even costlier for a company and team
you could technically just put the organization in work experience after you join them
even though it's OSS
that would likely be interpreted as stretching the truth
true , as godly said few days ago , company hires you as intern and grooms you well in hopes that you will find their company interesting and join them in future and have a headstart in the career
it is already costing the company real money to have you as intern in the first place and even paying a stipend on top of that will even cost more with no return that will make them any real money as a regular employee does
what percent of interns end up actually being valuable to a company? it must be a tiny minority
