lol it is bragging
but I havent seen any DA jobs that use Go or Rust, 95% are Python or some JVM language like Java, Scala or Kotlin? its sad
it's not the number of languages, it's just because I see Cython
what did you mean by
most juniors probably haven't used Rust, Go and Python, most likely it'll be 1-2 of these (Python and Go more likely), Java perhaps too
well, if someone actually knows Rust, Go and Python and they're are a junior then I'll be impressed and I wouldn't care if I see Cython. But if I see it written there, then I would have quite a few questions like why Cython?
they used it and wanted to tell you that they used it
yes, I think the fact that you claim to know (idk how much you know these) Rust, Go and Python is already impressive
ok thanks, can you hire me now?
i don't think there should be that much weight given to the skills section... pretty much every college grad will have at least like 5 different languages listed
no way they know 5 straight out of college. maybe the syntax, but thats it
I personally think it's better to list languages and technologies that peeople are comfortable with, not just that they might have used it once for a toy project. Otherwise, listing them with some identification of experince is ok too. E.g. Python (3+ years), Rust (1+ year), etc.
but do they know them well?
i'm up to 5 if you include SQL ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and another like 5 i'd probably be ok with listing on a resume. number of languages truly means nothing
maybe? that's why simply looking at the skills section is not enough information. that's what the rest of the resume is for
sure, me too. so they are comfortable with Cython, they even have it listed above go, rust, and js
sure, but you are the exception, not the norm.
i'm barely halfway through college. even if you took the minimum number of CS courses required to graduate, you're still doing java, c, and python
Sure, in that case I'll ask them what they have used Cython for and why. Then I would ask them why didn't they use something like Rust or C++ which would be what is actually used in the industry. I don't think that there would be many arguments for Cython
C++ in data engineering?
and that is fine, I'll expect to see Java there, maybe C too. Ofc you probably wouldn't know them well at all but if it's your first job it's ok. But if you have experience then I'll be asking questions. Essentially, always expect many questions when you put something unique on the CV and you should be able to justify it
if you do data stuff, Python is what is good for prototyping. Then you'll use something like C++ or Rust for productionising
And if you are so focused on writing fast Python, then you can just switch from Cpython to Pypy as Pypy is using JIT. However, it is not always a good solution and that's why people write data stuff in Python but when it needs to run fast, then I would write it in something that would be fast
But anyways, that is my personal view, you can ofc put anything there just make sure you can justify it in an interview. Other than that, I think your skills section is good enough and I hope you get the job you want
at my job even PyPy was too revolutionary, let alone write some compiled extension in Rust or Go ...
but also PyPy dosent work with some ML libraries (like PyTorch)
yeah I would pay to find a DA job that uses Rust, or even Go.
are you a DA?
no. In fintech world for example, people would develop some model prototypes in Python, test them and then when that needs to be made fast, they'll write them in something like C++ or Java, sometimes Rust. You're right, different people do these. If you work in data as something like Data Scientist, then you won't case as much about the performance and would write it in Python anyways
is it really that rare tho? like in college i had to learn c,c++, python, java, and kotlin and for three of these languages they were part of required courses
i feel like if u do internships during summer of college too, u prob would pick up more languages too while doing the internshio
These conversations are always weird because it's hard to gauge what 'knowing' a language actually means. I think most college grads do a course in 3-5 languages, yet arguably don't "know" any of them at anything beyond a beginner level. All depending on the definitions and individual (averages aren't terribly helpful)
When a company reaches $100M annual revenue in July (first time it surpasses the 100 million dollar mark), does that mean my position is safe? No worries about layoffs? Should I ask for a pay bump?
Not as much of a hot take as you might think.
I have seen it a few times where someone chills for 2 years but then has issues finding their next jobs because they have nothing to show for
Or hearing things about how startups are like dog years comparing to large companies
Nothing is ever safe.
Why would they give you a pay bump?
I led the team in several flagship projects. I went without a pay bump the last two years
that's a better argument
"because I'll leave if they don't" is the only answer with teeth
Why would my position not be safe? We are hitting our $100M annual revenue and it's not even the end of the year
Company will reason in terms of which percentile of the market they target, their runway, their profitability, etc.
I am also sure there are other folks like you that have not gotten in pay bump.
So you could ask if they will review their comp. plan and help to catch up the folks that have fallen behind the curve for their comp.
Best time to let go your department to focus on a new AI team
I never counted the number of languages I "know" mostly because most popular ones are all different spins of the same idea and you can be proficient in a couple of days
yes, a lot of us have not seen a pay raise
i am leading the AI team
Any time I ask for a pay raise for one of my employees the question I always have to answer is "what is the minimum increase to retain them?"
haha, then you are good to go
When the CEO tells you they are looking to get bought by a private equity firm within the end of the year to finance our growth, does this spell layoffs and restructuring?
This could mean anything. There are different possible scenario
If you are in the AI side and as critical as you imply, then you may even get some golden handcuff
Not a hot take 👍
tbh, if your company is successful, I am not clear why they would want to be bought by a PE
to double, triple, 10x the profits?
PE are there to extract value, not create growth. That's what IPOs/VCs are for
Like a PE will create a team in India to build an offshore team. They won't care about innovative solutions
CEO said specifically: private equity
he wants to be bought by PE
Sure. Hence my confusion. If you learn more about his reasons, I would love to hear about them
there's probably some nefarious things going that will screw the workers
"cash out the CEO" could be a reason
CEO gets all the cash, while we get nothing?
Well, equity holders would get paid
the rough scheme is:
- Preferred shares go first
- Rest get split based on equity ownership
But beyond that, there are also bonuses and extra incentives
i have 2k in equity. will that mean anything?
our cash bonuses each year was $1000 and $2000 max
2k of what? Which country are you in?
2K of company equity. USA
hmmmm. There is a good news and a bad news
As in, your equity position is valued at two thousand dollars?
yes
Well, then you could, if your equity is bought out, be paid about two thousand dollars for it (perhaps with a small premium on top)
The good news, is the number of shares is relative to the total number of shares (ie. percentage).
The bad news, is the technical term for your situation is that you most likely got fucked since it's common for new companies to start with like 10 millions of shares
Try to figure out your equity percentage and the fair market value.
Also try to figure out if you got options, shares or something else
2k in options
Also review your equity plan. The standard is a 4 years plan with a year cliff
2k in options, 2 year cliff
so you still have to pay your options to acquire shares. This means it comes down to the difference between the option price and the current share value.
Note that buying options will trigger a tax event as well
do i get rich off this or no?
Just to be clear, do you know the difference between "you have options on two thousand shares" and "you have options that are currently value at two thousand dollars"?
compare the price of options with the current value of the shares
no, it's options. i don't have 2k shares
Never mind
I understand that 🙂
If the option cost you 1$/option but the PE firm acquire your shares at 5$/share, that means a 4$/share gain, excluding taxes
So it's not a good thing that the CEO tells us we will be bought by private equity?
The devil is in the details
start by reading https://carta.com/blog/equity-101-stock-option-basics/.
https://www.holloway.com/g/equity-compensation/about is also a good book
Hi, @inner wren
I'm new here,
Will you assist me in career guidance on data science and Ai.
Explain the different roles and different tech stacks, and also the roadmaps to achieve.
I know you are an app or bot , maybe someone read this chat or you may reply if ai is embedded within you
Can anyone tell me how to read documentation?
You would have more success asking more pointed questions.
As such, you would find far better answers on google
I am Sure, there is a documentation about reading documentation: https://how-to.dev/how-to-read-the-documentation
wth
Which is best open source docs related to AI/ml/ds/da.

Thanks that is helpful. 🙂
Hello everyone 👋
Definitely, not that you always have that luxury
My first startup granted me 10k shares. We had an enormous IPO closing at $100 a share (my exercise price was almost nothing). I was a millionaire on paper. But I was locked up for 12 months (not allowed to sell for 12 months post IPO). By the time the lockup expired, the stock market crashed and it was under $1 a share. Your mileage may vary.
@turbid bobcat hows ur job search going on ?
I am stuck on my first job cant find second one I have only 6 months of experience now
How do I design a graphical user interface for an existing Python project?
tkinter ?
any one
but this convo belongs to python discussion not here u ll get help faster
idk know where that is
press ctrl + k then type python-discussion
ohh okay, thanks 🙂
man I have been trying to learn all sorts of things AI, pygame and trying to contribute to large codebases
Why 'stuck'? Whats wrong with the job?
theres nothing wrong but the pay is low and when the internship gets over pay will be medicore in the job
damn bro so nice whats the role ?
I knew you could do it congrats
nice nice
I am only targeting python or react native jobs
yeah all roles except AI because I am still learning
react, nodejs too
I am working on some open source projects to get a hang of them and add them to my resume
I am applying alongside working
the foreign startups dont even look at resumes
I have made another contribution at my company that is making a graphing library from scratch using react-native-svg it deals with various stuff like heatmaps etc.
A little light on projects for a new grad, is my first reaction: a lot of space in Skills that'd be better in Projects.
And a lot of bullets (7) for that first job, which basically just pads out a single job.
I just got offered 10k shares 👀
No idea if / when they would even IPO. But
. I will either be rich or not.
LETS GO GAMBLING!
I was a junior at the time... as a junior, it's just "extra" and nice to imagine!
Is there a good tracking software that people use? Or just sheets? I don't need tracking now, just curious
It was the folks near the end of the careers that quit good jobs to work for that startup that got hurt.
Yea, for sure. The base salary is enough. So I either win big or lose nothing.
Yah, as a junior, salary comes first. Everything else is extra.
The south african revenue or the virus?
How do they make money? They have no pricing?
RSUs seem to be more common in the US nowadays... I've heard of SAR but never seen them. ISOs are what I had.
||I, oh I know. I was just joking around||
Yah, most IPOs don't actually happen, so probably didn';t miss much.
Are the private markets still a thing? I vaguely remember there being something like that. Not really interested in them beyond "how do they even work¿"
I know nobody asked me, but I would not be listing specific vulnerabilities found at a previous employer. As your potential new employer, I wouldn't want my employee publicizing that information. I would keep things more summarized - "Audited XYZ platforms for security vulnerabilities and addressed findings." or some such.
Skills is better. Experience and Project bullets need a lot of work.
Theser are all the links```Maze Game Concept → https://needjob-coder.itch.io/mazegameconcept

Yah, let's start with the first one. "Made a clever system", "Made very sophisticated"...
If you read that, what would you think?
how bout now ```Maze Game Concept → https://needjob-coder.itch.io/mazegameconcept
• Made a system of a puzzle game where the level moves in smaller pieces
• Made animations using tween
Infinite Runner Top Down → https://needjob-coder.itch.io/infiniterunnerrpgstyle

Tomb Of The Mask Clone → https://needjob-coder.itch.io/surviveator

First, grammatically, it isn't correct. Or semantically. I have no idea what that bullet actually means.
And if someone read it, they'd assume your communication skills are weak.
Something about the CV looks strange from a formatting pov. Like how all the bullets are bold face etc.
Second: it doesn't tell me anything useful. What language or stack? etc.
Are you from the states/canada? If so you may be able to keep this template. If you aren't from those two I'd definitely look up what the "standard' is where you are. Where I live having a visually appealing one is definitely recommended
"Discovered session login vulnerability" "Found visible API keys via reverse engineering."this is useless, tells me nothing, what platform/environment, how does this demonstrate to me a specific skill
"Developed image metadata removal for security." I don't even know what this means, it's not proper grammar, again no indication of platform, scope, impact, etc.
"Worked on Eazebuzz payment API" you "worked on" it? Did you achieve anything? At least you mentioned Django so I have some idea what skill area this is.
etc etc
"very sophisticated animations" if you say something is "very sophisticated", it had better actually be very sophisticated, and you better be able to explain why it's actually a truly exceptional animation. Having opened the game, I can say that it is not.
Subway Surfers and Tomb of the Mask should at least be capitalized. The word "famous" here is not doing anything useful.
"needjob-coder" stinks of desperation and mediocrity. If I go to your profile on itch.io the very first thing I see is you using "shit" in a comment to describe your work.
I am modifying stuff
Private markets are larger and becoming ever larger. You don't need an IPO to get liquidity from a startup, secondary sales are a thing
I generally ascribe zero value to private shares (for low level employees)... seen way too many people get screwed over by recaps and stuff like that. Or, sales where the class A's get all the $$
THe investors taking their money out first tends to be the worst. Just absolutely toxic.
This used to be more common but a VC that does that now is basically signing their own downfall. If the startup is doing alright, there's always ways to extract liquidity
You think? I have no idea on current practices, but assume VCs are still insisting on preference.
VC having a liquidation preference doesn't necessarily mean the employees can't liquidate early, provided the VC gets the same option to do so
I haven't seen that in my universe... the system still seems stacked against employees.
London VC be popping off
I do like London. One of those cities I'd love to live for a year or two.
I ought to understand more about startup equity and VC than I do
how does one learn without becoming a cautionary tale?
Meeting and talking with VCs. :p
For about 10 years, I did a lot of tech due diligence for VCs (a side gig), so a lot rubbed off.
but, I also worked on both sides... for startups + for big tech... and in big tech, also was involved in some M&A diligence.
Silicon Valley (tv show) is remarkably accurate.
I still need to watch that, guess I'll move it to the top of the list
I feel like it's impossible to work at a startup for very long and not learn a lot about it, at least if you come in knowing zero like I did. It feels like I'm being told about it almost daily.
I've never actually worked at a startup
there's some discussion about spinning off a part of my current company though
Go to events in the nearest city to you, talk to founders, operators and investors. Get a perspective from all the different sides and why they do the things they do
I wouldn't recommend working in a startup to try and create wealth, unless it's your own and you have an exceptional network of talent and capital providers (fools, friends, familys, VCs, etc)
yeah, it's more something I need to know about for risk management, not to get uber rich
but I mean, if the opportunity comes along to get uber rich, I wouldn't want to squander that either
Risk management in terms of potentially joining a startup?
I am biased but after considerable research across many domains, angel investing seemed to be the most reasonable way to create wealth without risking excess time, money or mental health. It's pretty fun
Hi
I love being a tax filling edge case. Yay.
I am moving states but will start before I have a new address
looks too vague imo, u should follow xyz format if possible
@native bolt hi are you developer ?
maybe
because anything that is worth saying about your career is worth taking 20 seconds for
i thought it was discussion, misread it.
yes but not a good one
btw where can i ask what ci cd is
one of the off-topic channels
okay @native bolt im going to start coding could you be a good mate of mine ? i can gain the experience from you
im 14 tho
this channel is for career discussion
ok ok mb sorry
oh ok ok i thought your a experienced persn
if you dont mind can we move to offtopic channel ? @native bolt
Right yea. That isn't so bad
Just went through my insurance stuff. 👀
I really really hope that my address situation doesn't cuase things to get ugly 🙏
Are you living in the location, but without a permanent address?
how often should I practice data structures. Or rather how important is it that I master it?
if you know enough to get an A in an DSA course, you should be good. it shouldn't be a high-stakes grind.
so I don't need to committ two hours everyday for six months?
I am going to live in a hotel :D
where did you get the idea that you had to?
idk chatgpt?
I'm not accountant, but residency is not determined by your address but by where you live.
Right yea. But I don't have a permanent address to provide. And so it messes things up
Maybe dont take advice from a chat bot
NYC is notorious for going after people who try to use out of state homes as their permanent residence, but spend most of their time in NYC
To the point where they look at where your pets live.
they have too most people are living in philadelphia nowadays
No joke: https://nypost.com/2024/04/19/business/new-york-auditors-crack-down-on-out-of-state-residents-avoiding-tax/. "New York State auditors monitor everything from people’s travel schedules to the locations of their pets in order to prove that they owe taxes even if they have residency out of state, according to a report.
"
Migration from nyc to philadelphia is massive.
Good thing I am definietly not moving to NYC or anything like that
Oh yea. The tax diff between current state and state I am going to, is massive
\Philadelphia is a great alternate version of nyc if you like the city. lower population and way more breathable
That isn't how this works. I am moving for the company. Not becuase I want to move to ||city||
hi guys I just joined here, I am looking for a Selenium guy, who can work with us for any code, I pay by bitcoin, who is free to work and has selenium python intelegence and can code with chatgpt or without it.
The thing is, I won't have a place to actually live until like september. At best it will be mid aug. But at worst, like a week into sep ...
I am not trying to
This sounds like a non-issue. If you have to fill out paperwork right now with your address of residence, you put your current address of residence. As soon as you have a new address of residence you notify your employer.
People move states all the time. You have to file in both states for this year but it's not a big deal
Yea. That is the plan.
I am just a strange edge case. Idk how tax will work. Do I pay the place I am moving to; or the place I am now? This isn't my problem. But it is strange.
These are all automated systems. Welp,,, time to get an accountant
you should see if the company can help you with that. surely they have tax people to deal with this
They do not. They have a different company handle that stuff.
Get an accountant if it makes you more comfortable, but any basic tax prep software can handle a move between states
It is the in between that is the issue. I will live in CityA but my address is blank. But you can't provide no address. So it is CityB. There is no simple software that handles that. Not that I know of
Are you talking about when you file taxes or are you trying to submit a W-4 right now?
I am submitting the W-4.
And also yea, where do my taxes get withheld.
Becuase I also get a signing bonus. And it becomes worthless if it is going to be double taxed.
Is this correct
Uh, a screenshot of handwriting?
Wrong channel. #❓|how-to-get-help
Also, please type this out ...
Your federal taxes won't be double taxed. And, state taxes aren't (as far as I know) double taxed. Just keep a paper trail to show your residency in new state, even if it's paying hotel/etc.
(I am not an accountant nor your accountant)
You won't be double taxed.
Like I said, you can fill out your W-4 based on whatever address you are currently residing at. You update your employer as soon as you have a new address. When it comes time to file taxes, you report whatever is on your W-2s. If they report your bonus to the old state, that's where it will be taxed
If anything you'd have to file part-time residency in both states
But yea regardless of your W-4, you still calculate the correct amount of everything at tax filing time. W4 just determines the witholdings throughout the year
I did the partial residency thing last time I moved. (I always prepare my own taxes) Not a big deal. You never get double taxed on anything if you do it right.
I mean you get double taxed in the sense that you pay both fed and state taxes
Income taxes in the US can be complex, but it's all quite logical, in that everything makes sense from a certain point of view
well, because you're enjoying both state and federal services
indeed
and state taxes are deducted from your federal taxable income (in the year you pay them)
currently I live in a state with no income tax so that's nice
Except for all the other taxes that state certainly has 🙂 tanstaafl
I’m sorry are you coding in cursive handwriting??
Yes
Honestly, props.
Yeah, I mean, we pay a lot in tolls... and insurance... so...
Lucky. My state has us pay income AND a lot in tolls.
We don't have many tolls here but property tax is fun
Florida is a unique state in a lot of ways. But I gotta admit I don't miss filing state income taxes.
I’m in New York lol. everyone here is going to your state, and everyone there is coming here.
It’s too expensive here, hopefully once I get my degree and find a good company, I can go somewhere cheaper but nicer.
Florida is not a cheap place to live. Well actually areas of it. All the wealthy people from other states move to Florida, driving up the cost of living.
Basically, no matter what state you live in, you will get screwed one way or another.
Hey everyone, i just got into a course of Data Science and A.I and i'm planing on looking for an intership asap, for those who work in the area, what do you guys think are the essencials for me to learn before start applying?
Can anyone her tell me about web scrapping
So a company I got past 2nd round with said they’ll let me know by today, and I know they”re in the same time zone. Do they mean by 6pm or by midnight? Is leaving people in suspense a common practice?
could mean either way. Closer to 6pm than midnight though, or else it would signal a bad culture
I know SREs are supposed to be all hours, but damn
🤔 what do you mean exactly
When you say "course", is this a degree-awarding experience at a university?
Do you mind also saying your country?
Because "course" means different things in different varieties of English.
In american English, you would say "you have to take courses in a CS program in college to get a degree". And Brits would say *you have to take modules in a CS course at university to get a degree".
I think.
@woven sage for your awareness, there was nothing wrong with your message.
Is anyone open to helping me in the help forum for my text-based game dev issues?
Please do not cross post your question in discussion channels.
alright
Eh, people say all sorts of stuff but don't stay awake thinking about it.
Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. What it means is: ask them tomorrow if you haven't heard from them and don't stress it
Is leaving people in suspense a common practice?
LOL, you must be new to job hunting? Yes, it's is common practice. Best to just keep working on more applications and not holding your breath for anybody, but it's more then fine to check in if if the deadline passes. You definitely do not want to be counting the hours waiting for some offer... Getting ghosted is horribly common.
Yes, i have 10 months to find an internship
I'm from Brazil
Ask over in #python-discussion plz
They called me back and scheduled an interview the me 😳
Does anyone know the best resource for learning cloud computing?
That's pretty broad topic. AWS and Azure both have certification courses.
Anything specific?
I've been seriously thinking of picking up an AWS certification - both as resume fodder and experience.
A lot of ads seem to want it for anything half significant, specially S3, EC2, and the database businesses.
However, I don't have much idea of what's actually taken seriously by the industry - except perhaps the official courses, but these are pretty damn expensive, and I don't have a looot of cash to spare right now.
AWS certs are considered fairly highly, but they're really useful if you're in devops or support or other adjacent roles... for pure SWEs, I'm not sure how useful they are.
is Computer Science more about coding or more abouth math
Pure computer science is only about math, but a computer science degree will involve coding and prepare you for a career as a software developer
I Don't like math, is software engineering a good degree?
I've been entertaining the idea of learning on my own, and just take the exam from there - but I don't have the money or social security net to casually drop a few hundred bucks on resources to mess around.
You will probably need to take math courses regardless. I would encourage you to cultivate a positive attitude about math.
Which kinda sucks, ngl.
I'll stick to theorics.
Math is like the source code of reality. You can embrace it while acknowledging that math lectures are boring and math exams are stressful.
If you don't have an open mind towards learning, software engineering is not a good degree.
ofc i have open mind about learning
Or, well, any degree.
But I would replace "open mind" with "positive attitude"
This is negative self talk
But ya know, this year finna be different, new school, fresh start, ima level up, get fire grades
AWS, I guess. I have some vague understanding of it from a crappy company-internal course I took last year (mainly so that I can put AWS on my resume).
Agreed. A big problem, I feel, is just the scope of things we apparently need to know, all the lingo we have to keep track of, and where I, as a developer, fit into all of it.
I'm sort of aware where I should be; there's a bunch of AWS services dedicated purely to DE activities, but there's just a bunch of things to go through first.
And those are expensive and I'm living practically paycheck to paycheck, so hey. Can't afford to sink money on something that won't return my investment.
Learning how to launch an EC2 instance, write to S3, and run a lambda is worthwhile, imo. Getting a cert? Less so, and it probably won't sink in unless it's part of your job
I intend on eventually moving into a data engineering role when I'm solidified as a SWE
Reckon it would be useful? I'm much aware that it's a very significant chunk of the job to interact with cloud resources such as data warehouses and lakes, pipelines, etc. along with other tools (mostly Apache), and if helps me go anywhere that direction, I'm all for it
is it hard to find a job as a cs major?
many people are having trouble but if you're a talented, hardworking engineer you should be fine
be active, don't settle for just going to classes. do personal projects on the side, contribute to open source, participate in hackathons, apply for internship positions, are all things you can do to improve your chances
What roadmap should i follow if i want a good swe job
Also do multiple languages help/ is learning them mandatory
A CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation.
In the mean time:
- Make sure you have good grades so you can go into the school of your choice
- Build things and have fun! Try different things too!
Im at the level where i can pass entrance exams n stuff
I can solve questions like check if its an olympic array , print this pattern etc etc
So what would be the next step? Currently im delving into hackerrank and seeing what are some basic projects i can try and do
!kin has project ideas
The Kindling projects page on Ned Batchelder's website contains a list of projects and ideas programmers can tackle to build their skills and knowledge.
Should i just start getting deep into building projects now?
It's up to you
Also this question is a bit weird but if i wanted to career swap to cybersec like midway through being a dev would it be easy/possible with the amount of knowlegde id have in pyth/java
Or is that a whole other domain
It's close enough it's doable, assuming you build the relevant experience and skills
Mhmm
I have about 1 yr left for my undergrad to get finished and another 2 for my masters plus some mo time in bw it all , so would that be enough to land me a top tier position
plenty of time.
Make sure you have good grades, great projects and awesome internships. Basically max out your college
How do i get awesome internships , like placements? Or do i just go apply myself
yep. You have to find them and apply
Is it important to do something insane during my internship as compared to getting an iship in a big company
no one is asking you to do something insane
My cuz worked in fang
Apparently he got a job there as a fresher out of uni
Is that thing?
sure. They do hire all the time
Are the interviews insanely hard as frick
if you have good grades, great projects and awesome internships, then it's easier than if you don't
Alr
no pain no gain 😉
Im majoring in cs in my undergrad , wb masters ? Should i do anyth specific
It depends on what's available and your career goals
Alr then
If you don't know, then it's a good time for you to explore the field and what are the different areas 🙂
Try them, see how you like them and the type of jobs
Well my goal is hopefully a dev at fang or a somewhat decent job at best as a swe
If not then probly cybersec
that represents literally dozens of thousands of engineers and probably thousands of different jobs
O
yeah, so that goes from the person working on the frontend for youtube, to the person working quantum research or the person writing code for the linux kernel on android
faang hires a lot of people, it's not as big of a "flex" as people think it is
you don't even have to be good at programming to get hired there
👀
Do they only hire harvard grads etc
Well the 2nd one yeah
But a celeb earns mills and a fang swe earns mills after like 8 yrs of grinding iirc
But u do have the right idea
Least if i aim high i might end up at the least a few paces away
Cant argue with that
3million cvs a yr apparently everybody tryna clutch
you can't have the top percent when you literally have tens of thousands of engineers as employees
you absolutely can argue with that as that description was just uninformed bullshit
What u mean the unifyfifty guy
Ok
no?
Based on a quick search, Google has ~27k engineers. That's just google.
That is huge
they hand out like 200 undergraduate computer science degrees a year or something
what would you class as huge?
a lot do
half of the people who come in here want a job at FAANG
therein lies the problem.
not really
In some countries without an education system and a high corruption index, potentially, but not in USA/EU
not at all
that doesn't mean they were wrong
Dyk arabic
you're making... 10k/yr in the US?
are you going for remote SWE jobs? are you a junior?
so you are a junior. thats kind of a risk for companies to take
Either way, the resume would show they are strong, not just claim it
Why not sharing an anonymized version of your resume for feedback?
0 replies for 600 applications tells me there is something funky with the resume
I am old and forgetful. Please entertain me
but did you actually?
hm, is it due to health reasons? are you receiving benefits?
i'm asking because if you get benefits or any support from the gov and you start earnin more then you might (most likely will) lose those benefits
I am new in python, where can I ask my problem?
for those that live in the EU (including UK), I am interested in doing a masters in data science and/or machine learning. There are lots of programmes that offer the same thing basically, i just dont know if the level of prestige helps or not in the long run - Meaning, will they set me up for financial literacy ? How good is the ROI. this is an open discussion just to get a feel of what the norm believes.
any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
The UK is irrationally in love with their own silly ivy league, its crazy
If you study in the UK especially you want to get into the best uni you can
They all cost the same anyway
I doubt the worth of US prestige though. I doubt its worth the cost
Hunter Bond job ads
I hate them with a burning passion
Theres a couple recruitment agencies that ask for red brick degrees
Theres also a couple that say "just message us, we'll figure it out together"
Neither's good
Hi
Whats a red brick degree
I m beginner to this discord 🫡
The UK ivy league
Whew
💀💀💀
Who are they recruiting for? Citadel? HRT?
ucl seems to be a good option, as it is ranked 9th and theres a possibility for the part time program Data science program
UCL, Imperial both great options in london if you can get in
do you have any idea of the gmat requirements ? i think this is a stong indicator of wether youll get accepted or not since its standardized
no one knows how hard or not my bachelor was
why reach a consensus on my gpa ...
You need a BSc with good grades it seems
You should contact their admissions team for more details
imperial has very specific programs that do not cut it for me. it has thing like data science in transportatio, or ds in social sciences. there's nothing more general
tried this last year, they seemed very rude. they just sent me links of the website
😔 admin people are the same everywhere lol
i have a 74% gpa
Because big number good at getting clicks
seems like its a upper 2:1 , well enough for the more prestigious UNIES ? coupled with a high gmat
this one isnt so bad with spamming, theres another recruitment company called Noir that is absolutely nightmarish with their posts, to the point where they take up entire search pages for a single job ad posted multiple times with different locations
i wish i could ban them off linkedin and possibly torch down their offices, but alas
I wish you could just do like on YT with a "Dont show my this company/account again"
Yea theres no way to block a company from the job search page
I wonder if you could make a browser extension that blocks a specific company if it spams like that
Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I am new to Discord and excited to be a part of this community.
This looks like a failure of linkedin more than the company.
But yea, most job sites I go through, have a way to block the company. Some even let you time them out. IE "don't show me this for another 30 days"
Should i focus on one big language like java , python or multiple
Pick one and get 'good'. Then, ask 'what should I learn next'
Alr
Hello guy, any links in Germany for a python developer or data engineer?
Hello guys, newbie here I just started learning python (done with the basics) I want to what are the career options I would get choosing python as my primary language, also which one are in demand right now (If I'd to step into the corporate world in the next 1 or 1.5 years), also If i choose data science as it very popular around here as a career option, what should be my aim in learning to achieve regarding python like dsa, oops, etc. (major question) ??
The easiest and fastest way to find this info out is to open linkedin and search for python jobs in your area and see what they ask for
What would it look like to be hired as a contractor for software engineering?
What would it look like? In terms of what?
There are -many- types of contractor arrangements too. Ranging from hourly consultants to agencies who contract people to other companies.
I'll make the opposite argument. Getting in is easy getting through is harder. Are you yourself confident that you can get the maths for DS. E.g. multidim calculus for partial derivation. No one is going to explain it in the course. We just don't have the time to do the math background on the course itself, that's why it is a requirement. Context: I did teach ML at UCL, now I have moved to another London uni.
This is not to put you off. All of the math needed can be self-taught in 2-3months. But I wanna keep your expectations correct. The getting in part is reasonably easy, if you are confident you more or less know the idea behind simple gradient descent you will have no problems getting in. Yet, there will be a few pieces of more interesting math here and there.
Mid 90s graduation rate for their masters compared to their acceptance rate kind of proves its harder to get in than through
hi i have poseted a qeury attt he python help pls check it out
You should ask in #python-discussion
Hiii
what? This channel is for discussion lol, not memes. #ot0-psvm’s-eternal-disapproval
Well most of the requirements would be well, in the contract. You could have more "freedom" as opposed to a traditional employee
It kind of depends on the contract tbh
huh? they were asking for a resume for review
how is that off topic
Could also have less freedom, could have no PTO, no pension payments, more admin, doing your own taxes, etc
what?
true
I think its really just dependant on the person's preferences if they want to be a contractor or not
like any career related decision
yep
im very excited to get into freelancing lately
lots of preperation to do
i know this guy who could do like login functionality on his website, i didnt even know you could do that if you didnt have the same resources as that of a company
i might want to do backend stuff in the future if its that accessible tbh
Also, I'd prefer you not ping me, thank you
Okay, so this may sound harsh. But, I think if that is a suprise to you or something that you didn't already know, you are probably not current cut out to do contracting work
Lol
No reason to be so hostile
I think in general, if you are even remotely close to Junior or even mid level, trying to get into things as a contractor is going to be a hellish experience
If you do not know how to implement it, there are services you can leverage for these
I do not disagree. Pass rates are almost enforced. And I did a massive rant here before over how often students pass despite the fact that it would be better for them to fail them, so I'll not repeat that. The question is: do you learn something useful from the MSc or not. Or do you just purchase a very expensive piece of paper. Again, this is not to discourage OP. I just keep arguing that what you get out of a grad course in the UK is what you yourself add into ut. The pass rates are inflated, but there is very little hand holding. And I feel bad for students that spent a lot of money just to be handed some paper at the end while they were clueless during the course, mostly because they expected something very different at the outset
We love the current state of UK unis, fucking abysmal state of education rn
It doesnt matter tbh, most students graduating from these unis know what theyre doing and even if they didnt, the paper is such great door opener you dont even need to know your stuff in the first place
(and since OP is asking here about unis i imagine they'll be clued in on learning things on the side)
What's up guys 👋
So to keep it short I’ve been leading front-end projects in a US company mainly React and React Native late 2021-present, but I'm starting to find it repetitive and uninspiring.
Before this, I spent six years with algorithmic trading in Pine Script and Python.
How hard is it to land an internship at a Python-focused company?
Why would you want an internship if you have years of experience writing code and leading people?
Internships are usually reserved for students, you will probably struggle
You have years of experience writing code and leading people?
My experience leading people is in FE work, I'm transitioning away from FE, it doesn't have the depth of knowledge i'm seeking. It won't be fair to go back to python and expect to be a lead there, would it?
Internships are usually reserved for students, you will probably struggle
Well i'm not expecting anything in return is what i'm trrying to say
i already have a job paying well i need experience
Could you please point out where I was hostile in that statement? I used polite language and kindly requested to not be pinged?
Not lead but internships are way back
You could try landing a mid or senior level role, js and python are basically the same thing
Honestly, it might carry over.
And yeah, like old man said, you don't want to sell yourself short.
All I am asking is that you respect my wishes? lol
If you cant or dont want to do that, thats gonna be a problem unfortunately
specific language doesn't matter, actual workplace experience in a relevant field does
hey guys i wanna be a software engineer, like someone that is doing machine learfning and creating ai
Pings are how discord works. You post a message, you get a response. Not sure what you expect?
if you really don't like the pings, just mute the server
im learning python right now in grade 10, can you gusy assist me in the best ocoureses and places to learn python? im a beginner still.
Uhm, having the option to disable pings when you click reply on a message is also how discord works...
Im not sure why discord would otherwise implement such a feature
The thing is that i don't have time to keep searching and interviewing i'd rather cut to the chase get unpaid hands on experience, then apply or get promoted once i gain some python experience back
You're asking ppl to do extra things to accommodate you
Yes... whats wrong with that?
Its really not that hard to just click disable ping I dont think
Personalizing your notifications to your very needs, is also how discord works. And the preferred way of doing it.
why not just mute the entire server?
Exactly, thank you, I dont understand why people cannot just click disable ping
Internships, as was mentioned, typically have a hard requirement for "currently enrolled in a degree program". It is not in a company's best interest to hire someone overqualified for a particular job
Does this server have a reporting system or some such?
I feel very uncomfortable
You can DM modmail.
Companies don’t look at it like that. First off, internships are not free labor in this industry. I got paid close to 30k from my internship (3 months). (Yes, it’s on the higher end. But point still stands).
And also, python is easier to learn than just having programming experience. So you can find a company that values your general experience and is willing to work with you to learn more. It’s not necessarily as easy a find. But bonus points; you know that the company will be a good company if they think like this
I mean I could just leetcode to refresh my memory but I was thinking maybe hands-on experience is a faster path to getting back on track with python, I don't have the time/energy for a toy project that's the whole story
Im just really confused because dont lots of moderators and users specifically refuse pinging as well?
Please dm modmail to discuss. This entire discussion is offtopic
Good point, I agree. the thing is that I wanted to get paid in experience rather than $$ because i'm not gonna stick around unless it's a good company
Well, you did choose to argue here as well lol
anyway
I am also a mod. Please drop it and dm modmail.
Hmmm. Maybe a freelance contract is what you are looking for. It’s more short term. And clear length boundaries
Please drop the subject, I have said anyway, which means move on.
You already have experience though. The only think you're lacking is specific knowledge in python, which is easily attainable for someone with your level of experience
Best bet is to leverage your experience to pivot, rather than try to ignore/not leverage it
not really
Maybe look for contributing or joining an OSS project, that might be a good way to build experience
That's a solid idea, it totally skipped my mind for some reason
elaborate?
Any recommendations for a good OSS
Hold I am trying to remember the word for it
There's lots of projects, big and small. Maybe pick something you use? Or, watch the lightning talks at PyCon or Europython and look for a small project that's interesting?
Sounds like a plan, If any of you have personal OSS project i'm more than happy to help let me know
Since you have experience in FE already, you could contribute some of the major python backend projects like Django
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/5.0/intro/contributing/
Okay, just for the record though, dont randomly look for github projects to contribute to, find a project you actually are using and like and contribute to that
This is very circular.
There are tons of great ones. But one you use is the best one. Contributing for the sake of contributing is … hard. But still doable.
Finally got an interview with one of the companies I applied to for an apprenticeship (engineering). Its next week on monday. Gonna do a lot of research, complete my current project Im doing and hopefully be prepared for the interview
Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nY_cy8zcO4 as a general overview to why you shouldn't being trying to do OSS for the sake of doing OSS to get a job
You heard me right. I don't think you should contribute to open source. Unless...

is the n word a slur or no
I typically dont trust youtube videos ngl
Good for you I guess?
I think contributing to open source is great, its helpful and lots of people should do it
I'll just warn you once: don't troll on this server, and mind the channel topics.
I’m being fr
Me too.
Sure, but please don't randomly pick a project and go "I have never used this thing but Im going to try work on it"
You didn’t watch the video. And it shows. Theo says the same thing. Just also makes it clear why not to contribute/ when not to.
Ye me too.
Yes it is a slur.
ye forgot mb
because what happens is people write bad code, they take up people's time, or they make useless changes. By all means to OSS, but do it to something that you actively use and have an interest in. Watch the video :)
Well as I said I typically dont get my information from youtube videos
Dude, the python community is just lovely ❤️
I'm most likely gonna dig into django, i've been reading there docs pretty solid stuff compared to next.js
I should have also said; contributing is more than code. It's testing, triaging, engaging in discussions, etc.
Lots of helpful people here, its awesome
You guys are awsome as well, thanks a lot for you guys' time
Hi everyone. Just made a text editor with tkinter/pygments for my capstone project. After about a week of shoving all functionality into the gui class I realized I should have used an MVC approach. If I were to use this project in my portfolio/resume, should I refactor it into EditorController, EditorGUI, and Editor classes? It's not terribly complex.
It wouldn't hurt to show that at the very least, you cared enough about the project to make it better on your own time. So go for it
should i have clubs on my linkedin profile within the education section, when recruiting for faang swe intern? i dont have any clubs on my resume
were you a club president or have some other leadership role?
Where is the problem?
(they are no longer in the server)
Oh just catching up. Thanks
i was, but i feel like thats old experience since i already had those on my resume when applying for swe intern, thats why i dont wanna include it anymore
It all depends on the skills you want to demonstrate.
If you want to demonstrate architecture related skills, then spending more points on it could be useful
I don't think it will have a meaningful impact in terms of interviews. So it's up to you
i dont it will have a meaningful impact in terms of getting interviews as well, thats why im thinking of removing it from my education section on my linkedin profile, and removing it from my resume
whats going to make up the majority of my resume and linkedin profile would be projects, experience, skills, and education
does that sound good?
Would someone be able to critique my resume? Thank you.
Passed my sniff test: resume structured well and nothing glaringly bad. Skills seems a little light... perhaps too honest, but I respect it for not padding with nonsense you don't really know.
Would suggest some git, testing, ci/cd work in the next project you do
GitHub links to projects would be nice
Small nit, is there a real reason why you have two undergrad RA slots? I get that they are "different" but it really is all the same. You should probably put them together as one.
If it was different labs, you might be able to add some distinction about what lab it is, as your divider. And not the tutor position as your divider
Overall, this is pretty good. No major notes.
You don't have a ton of experience, but that is also on par for your current level. So 👍
Sounds good, thank you
Also you don't need three decimal places for gpa 🙂
One lab was during the school year and the other was this summer in my hometown university. In the blacked out space I have each lab name, do you think that separates them enough? Also, thank you for taking a look.
Should I do 2 or 1 decimal places?
2 is good. Whatever rounds up in your favor 😉 (but don't lie)
that is a bit of a situation. Well ,,, I would try to distinguish them a little more. Maybe different titles for each location. Although that is also a little hard. Well; no perfect solution. You can play around with it and see what you like. (or send here and see what we like)
Got it, thank you so much
when i had a 3.89 i used 1 decimal point 😌 (but now i use 2 📈 )
I used 3 for academic applications. But besides that, yea 2 or 1
@sleek charm im not in uk
Thank you @smoky quest , @deft herald
Hey, I have an interview in 20 days and the recruiter sent me a guide for the "system design" interview, sending me this link: https://github.com/mutablealligator/system-design-primer#system-design-topics-start-here
To those who know system design, does anyone know if this is actually a good guide, or know of a better one?
At a very quick glance, it seems fine. It at least has a lot of topics. I say that it is easier to stick to one resource vs jumping around a ton. But like ,,, any should be fine.
Depending on the recruiter and what they know, they might have inside info to know that this is the resource. But I have 0 clue who this recruiter is.
that's an outdated fork of https://github.com/donnemartin/system-design-primer, which is a very popular… system design primer
how did you tell that its a system design primer
my genius sometimes frightens me
Can i post a freelance gig here?

Understood.
is a water shader good project for putting in resume ?
emulating water with code
the video is not smooth but when it actually runs it is way smooth
i wrote shader code
trust me it is the most annoying thing ever I have written shader code I am not doing it again
i did not make it it just manupulating the mesh and its properties
i am multiplying it with a Sine of something value to give it wave like effect
Hello everyone do anybody have experience interning / working for a quant firm
here is the live link https://needjob-coder.itch.io/water-shader
Hey can you guys rate a resume project here?
I dont think I can change that I ll have to make a new itch account
Here is the link: https://audiobookgenerator.vercel.app its an AI-powered audiobook generator
nevermind I have changed it
does the water shader look a good project to add in resume ?
Is the code available on the itch io website? I can't see it anywhere
You should probably make it available, if I was hiring I'd like to take a look theougj
https://youtu.be/FIZI3k7mTvA
Joke as answer, but seriously yes if u document it well enough.
Describe it as article/small essay how u did it 😉
Make the article/essay being the important part, and code/demonstration only as part of it.

Hey, can you guys rate my resume project? Its an AI-based audiobook generator. Thanks in advance. Link: https://audiobookgenerator.vercel.app/
Joma! (his anime intern videos were quite fun)
is it possible to run any script for application in headless mode?
or the question is does every application supporting headless mode scripting?
if by headless mode u assume Console interfaced execution in a standalone way in sepearation from main app.
then the answer it depends.
- For majority of tech debt free backend applications made in stateless way, it is yes (but still not for all of them)
- For desktop apps having plenty of in memory stuff, that can be requiring some interface to communicate with it.
TLDR: it depends on application design (architecture) and features present. #software-architecture channel is more apprioriate for this topic
And is there a way hot to control headless script external, for example got some custom desktop application? I choose settings, this desktop application generate script and execute it
I worked as c# developer for 2 years but left my job last nov
once again it depends. In general people implement such logic in a good way by having scripts already part of app. User just inputs variables and executes his script.
It is possible to make as part of app interpreter capable to launch any script in pretty much any language i guess, but it is topic involving potentially very bad design, complexity and fragility and heavy security problems. It depends on what u implement
Also some languages easier, some less easy to run on a fly. So not every designed way will be easy possible to ship to end user as desktop. People usually run such stuff at backend servers for easier controlling compilers, and provide for desktop app only interface with server
Replit app is like this, allowing user to input any code in multiple languages for execution
Now when i talk to recruiters i tell them about the gap and the reason being health issue, i never hear back from them ?
Is it forbidden to leave job because of health now?
its a feature of the project
I am trying to build my own render farm, now the purple things thats pretty much done with the app itself, I already finishing my script in python, but what would be your recommendation to create app which is gonna control the front for the users?
To the contrary, at least here in the US, I feel like career breaks have become more common and accepted then before. Some recruiters may see it as a reason to pass on your resume, but if your resume is good overall, that shouldn't generally be a deal-breaker.
If you're applying for many jobs and not getting any interviews at all, it's very likely that your resume needs work. Send anonimyzed screenshots here and people will give feedback.
no i am actually getting call back from recruiters its just after i tell them my salary expectation and about the gap reason that i dont hear back from them?
like my resume is actually getting shortlisted in initial screening but after they talk to me, they seem to be moving forward with different candidate :/
well its free, you get 3 tokens
So it sounds like the problem is in the details of those conversations. If they've seen your resume and are calling you about it, I wouldn't bring up the career gap, since they should already know about it. When they ask for salary expectations, I would not give a number but simply confirm that their range is acceptable.
?
If you cannot share the code, then it's not very useful as a resume project. It's fine to include it, and might even be impressive if you have X number of customers.... but a prospective employer will be more interested in seeing the code you've written.
true, have you checked it?
I followed the link and I see a signup page with pricing information and little else. Nobody here and no prospective employer is going to waste their time dealing with that. Include an obvious link to the GitHub repo, or find another project if you're not willing to do that
Thanks for checking it out!
okay i will make sure not to tell them salary next time..
My sister is on her way to a job interview at McDonald's
hopefully she gets the job.
i called her again she is setting up interview on monday lol
huh. what persuaded them
idk she said she was trying to call me, it was just today that i was screened for interview
yea i just know they are hit and miss, i already worked at 3 fortune 100 companies before, but have gaps between them
We wish the same
Thx, she finished the interview. Shell get a response soon, i believe
Let's stay on topic here plz

What a good channel for discussion of Self Help for neruo divergent ADHD folks to get help or some tips
We don't have a channel for that.
I see would this channel be of any help since it more career focused
This channel is fine if it's a work/career related question. Software engineering is a very neuro-diverse field. It's just not a general self-help channel tho, so we might direct it to an off-topic channel if it strays really far from anything career related.
@turbid bobcat look at the shader now https://saintelgrandosmokio.itch.io/water-shader
Ive such a bad habit of thinking too much into the future. Im unsure if I should focus the next decade of my life into going into SWE and then later in life, do a degree in another discipline or I just go down the engineering route and do my best to carry on programming on the side
@faint depot what country are you in?
UK. You can see in my previous comments for more details but tldr; applied to an IT apprenticeship and engineering apprenticeship. After that, with the qualifications I get in either, Ill go into a degree apprenticeship
Issue is, if I get accepted into both apprenticeships, which path do I choose? Ultimately, my main goal in life is to be in a career that helps so many people around the world. Though tbh its too vague of a goal but idk wtf to do in life
The thing I was going to say is US-specific.
Regardless of country, would it be wise to go focus on the SWE path or go along the engineering path? I do not want to make the wrong decision
I live at home and all the apprenticeship places are within walking or bus distance so thats no issue. Theres times where I think engineering will be the right path and then theres times where I think IT/SWE is better. Ive got an interview next week with major engineering company next week so hopefully that goes well
In the UK, a normal engineering apprenticeship takes 3 years (36 months) whilst the IT apprenticeship Ive applied to (BT) is 18 months
That sounds great! A solid opportunity lined up
I'm not sure, but I think that it is easier to pivot from traditional engineering into SWE than the other way around. If you pursue traditional engineering and keep up with some skills in SWE, you can pivot into that field later on with some more credentials / projects. You can also develop projects in the context of traditional engineering in order to both improve and use your skills
Thats what Ive been thinking. Whilst doing an engineering apprenticeship, continue with the programming. But on the other hand, Im thinking what if I specialise in the SWE side and then go into another discipline if I feel like it
I quit the job. Someone advised me to quit the position immediately after I was put in charge of procurement research
Then you'll go into another discipline knowing coding. That seems like a good thing?
And that I will be liable for company’s finances and that should be on director not on me to decide what software to buy
Just to let you know. I went to HR and told them how messed up a company it is and HR agreed with me. They will also communicate with the director about his behavior against me @fringe sphinx
Its a bit complicated. Will I have the time to continue the programming and is the apprenticeship interesting enough to keep me engaged for 3 years? Plus its the first time in over a decade that I genuinely have no set path for myself
I think the main question is which to do first, but it seems like it could work well either way
Which isn't a definitive answer, but is still probably the best
I don't know anything about the UK apprenticeships. I'm just saying: Good coding skills are valuable in most engineering disciplines. The sum (two specialties) is often greater than the parts.
The boiling point was when the director asked me to call companies that sells dashboard solutions to customers. I refused to use my own cell phone but they don’t have a phone line so I got frustrated and decided to quit
Good! Time to move on.
Hope you get a better job in the future. Seems like such a scumbag thing for the director to do
Sounds toxic. What's your next step?
I’m gonna look for other jobs
That are more relevant to my degree.
I swear to God. I will never work for marketing or bad startup companies
I did engineering for undergrad and went into tech. Wouldn't recommend engineering or IT as a career personally, lot of work for not much pay
Youll be surprised with apprenticeships here in the uk. One of my friends did an engineering apprenticeship straight after secondary school and he was earning 40k GBP by the time he was 21 years and he has no degree. Just a high school equivalent of an A level qualification
I listened to a wise person on discord before I went to HR. HR also agreed with me and this shouldn’t be my job
DAMN
You're locked into engineering after and you can't reasonably find other jobs easily (especially in engineering) without a degree
Yeah they want me to help them find solutions
Use those solutions and upsell them to customers
Dw im still going to do a degree after. But its just which path to take
He wanted me to gauge for 100K customers 🤣🤣
I told him the best step would be creating that solution in house but he wasn’t happy with that
I’m not sure why a customer wouldn’t go buy the solution directly from the company and instead use a third party company that does it for them and sells it at a much higher price
Whatever you do, diversify your learning. Prioritize breadth over depth. At least, that's my philosophy. Others may disagree.
It's very expensive to build things in house. Build vs buy is an interesting topic
Overall it sounds like a mountain out of nothing
iirc, the company is pretty small, right? an in-house project probably doesn't make sense if there's not a lot of manpower to put it together fast enough
As someone who studied engineering at uni, had exposure to IT work experience and software projects, I am very glad I went for software. As did basically everyone else in my engineering cohort
Hopefully when the time comes, I make the right decision
What does "engineering" mean in UK? In US, there's a specialty attached to it.. EE, ME, etc.
What does that mean? Lost hope?
What is your goal, and what have you been doing to achieve it?
Who is he?
The man trying to keep us down?
GUYS
Bachelor's in Engineering, BEng. Implies I did traditional engineering not software. Not mentioning specifics in case of dox
What's the scope of "traditional engineering" tho? I'm not sure we have an analogue in the US?
Yeah I'm not sure either
i have 53 warnings but my code works just fine is that ok?
What
Sorry, but I don't understand what you're talking about. You keep referring to things that you haven't defined.
srry
Some electrical, some mechanical, some civil, bit of everything
i think we could call that multidisciplinary engineering in the us
My degree is just plain "Engineering" with an "Electrical specialty"
Fucking hell this is going to take time to explain XD so bear with me please; in the UK I've applied to a level 3 engineering apprenticeship. Level 3 courses (apprenticeship or a high school course) in the UK are equivalent to A levels. Level 3 engineering apprenticeship have two part: the theory part where you go to a training provider that teaches you the basics and knowledge you need for the apprenticeship and then, the employer part where you actually work in the company and apply that knowledge. Engineering apprenticeships in the UK have multiple pathways; I've chosen the Techinical Support Tech route where I do all the planning and drawing up the schematics and shit like that (using CADCAM). I highly suggest to go on the UKs apprenticeship standards website to learn more about how they do apprenticships in the UK
Interesting, that's so different than in US, hard to draw any comparisons. Love it tho.
Wont be surprised if the US has better ways of doing apprenticeships. Tbf though the apprenticeship programs here in the UK are pretty good from what Ive heard. You have people earning graduate salaries before turning 21/22 despite having no degree
For e.g. one of my friends is on 40k a year. And he only did an apprenticeship, no degree. If he wanted to he could do a degree funded by his company but he said hes happy with what hes earning and doing now
That is effectively what I did
It's not that popular in the USA
apprenticeships in the UK can be quite competitive to get in, despite the lower grade boundaries
but there are some notable caveats to the whole thing, it is definitely not for everyone.
So there are two main separate 'apprenticeships' the ones where the company is just paying you what they get from the government and using you effectively as free labour, and the ones where the company is actively investing in you (these are typically the ones that pay more), the ones that use you as free labour are going to suck.
For reference, normally an apprenticeship will be partially funded by the government not sure if it has changed super recently, I know lockdown did some weird things to the whole system, but it used to be ~$11-12k
One thing to note, I think Level 3 are generally not as useful as Level 4 and above, although yes they give you some credentials, they exist in this slightly weird situation where they don't quite qualify as a full set of 3-4 BTECs or A-level grades. Which can make it hard to change company or go onto a different course later on. Because most things as part of the further education, look for BTECs or A-levels rather than what a Level 3 gives you. It is also worth noting, that some companies definitely play a bit fast and loose with the rules, it is not unheard of to have the company work you 5 days a week, then in reality you should be doing around 3 days working, 2 days dedicated training time.
The other thing that is definitely worth mentioning is your social life will be vastly different to that of someone going to Uni or in A levels. You will be working for the record, and your peers will be considerably older than you, and to some extent you are going to feel like you are in different worlds, what you would say to your friends isn't something you'd say to your colleagues.
Now to some extent, I would recommend doing A-levels, and then doing a level-4 or above. A) because there are more option and B) because if the company suddenly cancels (which can happen and did happen a lot in 2021 & 2022) you are going to be left high and dry
I probably can't overstate the social aspect, if you're 16, going into the working environment while the rest of your friend group is in A-levels/BTEC, is going to be a incredibly jarring experience, bear in mind, you won't have a summer holiday for 6 weeks, easter break, etc... you'll have 20 days of paid leave and weekends.
Nice to see a fellow Brit. Theres several issues; I'm 23 years old, I've already done my A levels (BDD, Maths, Bio, Chem). Tried applying for level 4 apprenticeships but didnt get in. Last chance is do a level 3 course, smash it and try to get into a degree apprenticeship. I'm not going backwards and retaking my A levels. The stress of A levels is why Im in this position. I did 3 years of uni and then left; just realised biomed isnt for me anymroe
Oh I see
Ive applied to a BT ap[prenticeship. Are they pretty good?
No XD
I'll put my top list of companies that I did not have a good experience with when apply and interviewing with:
- BT
- Sky
- Vodafone
- Virgin
- Someone else I can't remember
I wont lie, BT have said theyre going to give me an interview and that theyre waiting for slots but havent heard back from them yeet
BT and Sky get a special shout out because I did several sets of interviews with them, and then no response for literally 12 months before they sent an email with any sort of reply or offer.
How long ago was it?
one of my friend did a BT apprenticeship around that time as well (2020-2022 i think). He said it was a pretty decent course
I ended up going with https://www.softwire.com/vacancy/apprentice-software-developer/
who were amazing tbh, bloomberg also looked to have a good course
I'm from South Yorkshire. Too much of a hassle to move and applications are closed now. So many hard decisions to make. This genuinely my last chance as I cant go back to uni (cant afford plus with this shit job market, havent found a job in time to pay for uni fees)
Tbh IMO the current state of UK unis as well makes it not worth it with a tech related course
But I will say you probably do to some extent need to be willing to move to get the best opportunity
it's obviously a difficult decision to make but being willing to move does give much better flexability in choices
If my luck is shit and I get rejected from the companies, I'm going to have to live an elaborate lie (still living with parents) for at least a year while I apply to other apprenticeship opportunities
You can also try apply to https://www.techswitch.co.uk/learners (which is also Softwire) but they focus more on training & setting you up with partner companies getting you into the industry
Take your first step towards becoming a Software Developer by applying to our award-winning bootcamp.
It isn't an apprenticeship, but ultimately is geared towards getting your first steps into the industry
Ill think about it. The company I have interview with next week (engineering) is a highly reputable company. Theyve just been bought by the MoD and its very near where I live (dont want to give away mroe details where I live XD)
Engineering wise, GE and Quinetic are supposed to be good as well
Only one related to gov though is avoid GCHQ from what I've heard
whats bad about GCHQ?
I have ~heard that they have a habbit of working you like a slave with high stress and bad management
For the past year or so, theyve halted their degree apprenticeship scheme. Only continued their bursary scheme. Is Rolls Royce, by any chance, a decent company for apprenticeships?
I'm not sure, I haven't ran into anyone who's done one with them previously
Hallo i need help in python asap can someone help me
my plan for the future is to go on to do a degree apprenticeship with RollsRoyce after ive done my level 3 apprenticeship
go to the python discussion channel or to either of the specific channels
Alright sorry
No worries. Best use the specific channels (depending on your issue)
liebe leute, wo kann ich hier meine code zeigen, sodass ihr mich helfen konnt
From what Ive read online, it always seems like the issue with a lot of the apprenticeships is not the companies themselves but their training providers
How does that work? Who are the training providers? I guess I need to just read that link.
Depends. For degree apprenticeships, the training provider is the university the company teams up with. For a normal apprenticeship, could be a separate company that specialises in teaching (e.g. QA apprenticeships), could be the company themselves doing the training. The engineering apprenticeships Ive applied, their training provider is a research centre that was founded and funded by a uni in my city
Ye it's closed rn isn't it
It is. Youll have to apply in the autumn (around october time i think)
U just need to apply everywhere, market yourself, connect your LinkedIn. Learn Python, HTML, CSS, Flask & SQL put it on your CV. And connect your github. Rn u just need to apply to anything that says IT in your area, they all allow for progression on to more specific roles
Once u get your foot in the door the sky is pretty much the limit
If I do the engineering apprenticeship, Ill have a good three years to do all of that. Im learning Python along with SQL (databases) as I plan to delve into ML. Obviously, ML is difficult to self learn so Im just learning other skills so I can get myself out of tutorial hell and do some projects
Ye but the competition is very high for them too. I'm in London, I started out with a cloud specialist apprenticeship for Microsoft then moved on to cloud support engineer and then into software dev. ML is very difficult to get into without having a degree ofc, barrier to entry is high. Keep banging out the projects and try to get some Certs on your LinkedIn. Create a standard email u send to all potential employers, and a cover doc too + default CV.
Do you take classes at the training center? And work part time? Or just alternate between work and school periods?
Tbh at that point I would really not consider anything other than software
I haven't heard this about GCHQ or any of the letter names
Theres a guy on my team that did a BT apprenticeship and his critique was basically the pay only, everything else was great
Alternates. My first year will primarily be in the training centre and then the next two years a mixture of in centre and the work place with the third year being mainly in the workplace
Ye u might have to take the 14k starting salary on the chin tbh
It was 18-20k for him, which is pretty good for an 18yo
I can only go off from people i've talked to about it
That's great
I absolutely know that. I at least want to know ML anyway because I just find it interesting and I really want to delve into it more. Any little bit of knowledge helps
Oooh. In US closest is a coop program. But it's really a Uni program.
(Co-op)
Do you think a BT apprenticeship could be better (IT Solutions Software Apprenticeship is the role I applied for)
We have degree apprenticeships which I assume is the UK equivalent of a Coop program
What is the reasoning to go for apprenticeships over one of the free bootcamps? At 23 you'd be getting into the workforce a lot faster without all the faff of an apprenticeshp
Can they get into the workforce with a free bootcamp?
I think apprenticeships are better and plus I want to get a degree (degree apprenticeship though, not conventional degree)
There's some government/uni funded ones that are pretty decent, have seen people break into good roles if you use it as a springboard
Without sounding cheesy, Ive got ambitions and aims I want to achieve but dk how. Plus I still get a qualification whilst getting paid (still live at home so its not bad)
apprenticeships provide far better skills than a bootcamp and open the doors to better opportunities and compensation
Also no debt. Im a fuxking idiot for not doing one after A levels. 3 years at uni and dropped out. Gonna have to pay it back 😞
ngl, am more worried about the degree than the investment
Very true, I would point out the current job market in the UK as a reason to not go for apprenticeships as much. Do a decent bootcamp and try to get something entry level imo
Did biomed. Foundation year and 1st year at one university, then transferred to my home university and had to redo year 1 again. Thought fuck this shit, Im out. And here I am talking to all of you
I too went f this. I can relate.
main issue is that bootcamp is for cheap and unskilled labor. You will have lower opportunities and compensation
This isn't for jobs, vacancies for Apprenticeships in UK are generally high and haven't lowered. There's multiple websites in which you can apply for level 3-level 4
yep. It's a bet. On one said it's unfortunate it did not pan out, but on the other side, it's fortunate that you did discover something you vibe more with
In my case, went military and then got my shit together. Not all paths are straight.
That's actually sick
Issue is, idk which road to fucking take 😂. Ultimately, if I get accepted into all the apprenticeships Ive applied to, need to make the decision which one I should take and being doing for the next 3 years
It's one reason I'm very familiar with the dismal 4 year graduation rates in the US.
Sounds like you don't have any bad choices.
I'm very well aware considering I'm finishing a level 7 🙂
You can learn enough to get decent projects down. There are very high calibre programmes in the UK that are completely free, just highly selective in return.
I know a guy who did one after having done physics, was on comparable pay to me a couple years out
what do the levels mean? how high do they go (american here)
I know but I have to choose one at the end of the day. Ive already wasted 4/5 years. A girl who I was friends with finish her degree in medicine within that time. Im here stuck at the beginning again and yet I keep walking forward because im too stubborn to quit
Do you have a degree only path? (That's financially viable)
The apprenticeship route. I can do a normal apprenticeship, get the highest grade (distinction) and maybe use that to leverage getting a degree apprenticeship where my degree is funded for me by the company that accepts me
There really is no other financially viable route to a degree as Ive already done a few years so i wont get any government loans, have to pay out of pocket
Seems like this provides a good overview https://www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean/list-of-qualification-levels
Hey how much do senior developers make a year
Where? Working on what?
Softwares
Between $0-$1m. 😄
web dev TX
im seeing an average of about 120k ish
Wtf how
higher in austin ofc
How are doctors 100k lawyers 100k and web devs 120k
supply and demand
Can i make more with a compsci major or engineering
it matters what you do not your major
Wait robin u know what tamu is right
i could be a cs major and go work at mcdonalds or some guy without a degree could be making more money than me working swe
yeah that's where i go 🗿
OMG FR, CAN U HELP ME WIT LIKE APPLICATIONS N STUFF
in general, software engineers tend to make more than other engineering fields. but you can look up all this data yourself. see bls.gov
SOOO im tryna get into it, and someone told me to do a super underground major like "ocean marine engineering" then my second year , to transfer to compsci major.
Would this work
no
but reddit said its possible
it's almost impossible to transfer into CS anywhere
😭 Then if i want to do cs, where do i go? TAMU is just engineering
ok but ur stats are high, mine are rly mid
You should study harder and get them up
Yes it is... the acceptance rate is rly low
I cant , im a incoming senior, im a genius rn, but i was SOOO rerrttarded freshman and sophomore year. like i kept getting in trouble n stuff, but i flipped my life around, and take like all AP classes, 5 on all of them, and like all 90s and above
please dont use that word
there are other ways to express the same thing without sounding abelist
What if im atuistic
thats fine i would ask you to just not say those things in this server
no but dont yall have a top 10% of ur class get auto accepted?
yes thats a thing across texas
if you're top 10% of your class you get auto admission into any college of your choice in texas. i think UT is top 6% though so an exception
Ok what if like my school is so smart that the avg guy has a 4.5 weighted gpa and like im rank 150/200
then you have to apply like the rest of us do
😭 Yeah but how am i getting into tamu
But i wanna be doing cs 😭 and its super competitive
they overaccept students on purpose. you go through a general engineering program your first year and if your college GPA is 3.75+ you get auto accepted into CS
i dont get it, what do u mean auto accepted
first you apply for the school itself, then you spend a year there doing random stuff, then you apply again for your top 3 majors of choice
if, during that first year, you maintain a GPA of 3.75+, then you automatically get admitted into your first choice major
Wait actually? Then why are ppl talking abt like "picking a major" before applying
but the major you pick now is not binding
CS is incredibly competitive so if you don't have that GPA you're basically not getting in. i managed to make it w/o that GPA so it's possible but incredibly difficult
Does anyone have a pdf with the flask documentation?
ask in #1035199133436354600
you can build the docs yourself and export to HTML
Oh, thanks.
But im an incoming high school senior 😭😭😭 what im asking is like Do i needa pick a major, or talk abt the major i want to be in when i apply?
The reddit link i sent was ppl saying like whats the easiest major to get INTO tamu itself right? or was it talking abt like what u were js saying : " if, during that first year, you maintain a GPA of 3.75+, then you automatically get admitted into your first choice major "
does anyone know anything about updating tpm 1.2 on hp
ask in #ot1-perplexing-regexing
Wdym by at least
hi bobin
oh ok thanks
i can't speak for other departments. im under the college of engineering so my advice is only really applicable to that
Wait if im TRYING to get into tamu, what do u advise doing
having an idea of why you want to go to college is important
thats it?
yeah pretty much
is taking 21 aps in high school good?
if you do well in them sure
Whats a good sat / gpa to get into the school
you can transfer those credits and maybe even start as a sophmore
START AS A SOPHOMORE? LIKE SKIP A GRADE?
i think the average is like 1300 so just do better than that and you'll be fine
yeah kinda
thats what my roomate did
What abt gpa. i have a 3. 5 weighted 😭
How tf am i bringing it up. i have ONE semester actually before i apply
get all As
But im taking the hardest classes ever.
AP Physics C
AP Compsci
AP Post Cal
AP Chem
AP Bio
AP ENv science
AP Gov
Theres no way i can raise it up.
the only hard classes on there is physics C and chem
But also if i do get all a's whats the 3.5 going up to
dont know you will have to run the numbers yourself
have you taken gov bro
no
i havent worked with weighted gpa stuff in a while
theres probably calculators and stuff online
gov is one of the hardest APs 🗿
first time im hearing that
no its not
bottom line is, do the best you can in class, write good essays, get rec letters, apply to safety, reach, and match schools and you will be fine
Just know ur laws n stuff is what the past seniors told me
Whats a safety reach and match
Also how many should i apply to .
And do i have to pay to apply to schools cs someone told me that
Also can i reuse the same essay
Do i try to apply to every texas school then like outside states after that
excuses
Safety is schools you know you'll get into easily (fallback option), match is schools that are just about a perfect fit for you, reach is where your stats are a bit below the average for the student going there
there's no hard number on how many you want to apply to
most colleges charge an application fee (usually less than $100 though)
the way it works is you have one master essay you send to every college, but every college has their own prompts so you write a couple for each.
there are too many schools in texas for you to apply to. but if you're looking for in state options (tuition is generally cheaper), like 80% of your choices should be in texas. you can apply to stuff outside as well, nothing is stopping you (i applied to ASU as a safety for instance)
Ohh so perfect basically it matches my stats exactly and safety is like if im completely homeless, and reach is like just luck
So i can literally js apply to every college in the world?
BROO WHAT , so if i apply to like 20 colleges, ill be paying 2000 $ ?? 😭 Wtf
then dont apply to 20
do it in moderation
i applied to about 8
and paid 800
no it wasn't $100 for each
Why didnt u get into an ivy
i didn't apply to any
did yk ur getting in or whatt
when do tamu results come out
n should i worry abt fafsa
whats ea ed
early application/early decision
whats the diff betw both and regular
early decision is binding, you agree to go to that college if you get accepted. early application is not binding, you can still choose to not go even if you get accepted. ea/ed have earlier application due dates
its a way to show that a particular school is a priority for you
Can i lie and not go to it if i get accepted
Also is there pros for earlier decision other than getting results early. Like do the school accept me more or smth
there are contracts you need to sign to enter into ED
Should i wait and get my gpa a bit up (its a 3.5 weighted) instead of early decision
Ill break the contract 😭 im not 18
i would not recommend that
is there like a advantage of ed
😭 I dont see a point other than flexing ur in college earlier to ur friends
yes the chances are higher
theres also more spots open at that time and less people applying
WAIT DEADASS? SO ITS EASIER TO GET IN?
yes
it's not really that substantial, but it depends on the college
Ok wait i have more questions, im sorry if im enslaving u atm
yes it is 😭
you just found about it 2 minutes ago, how can you say that it is
Ok whats the difference between like tamu and like the other million other a&m schools im seeing, cs why is there like smmm buildings for no reason
Yes
a lot of universities have stuff like that
they'll have one main campus and a bunch of other sister schools and branches and whatnot
Especially state universities... our local state U has 4 campuses plus main.
whats the point of sister schools?
specialize in stuff, accept more students, many reasons
im confused
Do i pick a major when applying, yes or no, also im applying for cs thats why im talking in the server abt this
no, it asks you for what major you want to do but its not binding
But one of the questisons is asking what major ur gonna do 😭
nvm i read it
Also does tamu treat cs and eng the same?? or they like eng more
what does it mean to "like" it more
accept more eng ppl
i think the college of engineering is one of the biggest ones so yeah probably
Can u explain this 😭
But u just said they accept eng ppl more 😭 im thinking of doing eng then switch to cs second year
Accepting more doesn't mean it has high acceptance %.
That said, my local U's CS program is one of the most selective
engineering and CS are not different here
but regardless switching into CS is almost impossible
Do they publish program specific acceptance rates?
yes
SHOW
Wait is tamu a rly good school like ppl would be gassed up if i said i go there
Also u said before yall have 60k ppl, how do they manage all that stress 😭
Wdym by fucked. do yal like have fights n stuff
class registration was 2 days ago and the site went down 10 minutes after it opened
no. we have way more students than we should. resources are stretched thin
why would it go down, 60k to a website isnt even that bad
Do upper class get priority?
yes
Wait so is it super crowded .
very
Do you like it there.
Also wait im not even applying to the same school as u. im going to htx tamu, ur in like atx
yes i like it here, no i dont know what that is
What abt UH and UT , are they easier to get into than am? or harder?
Doesn't your high school have a college advisor? They have access to databases like Naviance that provide detailed acceptance rate info
school starts in 12 days, im finishing this before school starts + My college advisor yaps too much
Also not like i need serious help. I just need advice from someone whos IN the college themselves. Robin is doing a fine job helping me already
I feel more confident getting in than before
Most college counselors have better acceptance rate info than is publicly available. My son's school could tell you acceptance rate for most schools by GPA and major.
son is CRAZY 😭 are ppl in this server fr that old
don't know, didn't really look into it. though i'd wager UH is a bit easier and UT is a bit harder
Ohhh alright thank you
Whats the difference betw someone going to CC and getting a CS job than someone going to tamu and gettinga cs job.
Yes
network, mostly
Cs everyone at my school says cc is for homeless ppl or ppl that dont care abt life or smth
ours is the biggest in the state and can definetely open some doors for you
no, it's actually a very fine and economically viable option
Oh i thought it was just a buncha teens 😭😭 Cause its discord.
Community college is a two year degree, right?
No but if you say you're going to community college in my school u would get bullied so hardd and made fun of 😭
is hcc 2 years , i forgot @pine sleet
most community colleges are
they give you an associates
the common advice is to do 2 years, transfer out and do another 2 years elsewhere to get the bachelor's
not even that but my parents would think im a failure.
you don't have to go if you don't want to. im just saying it's a great option for many people
