After I got the FTE offer for the other firm. Like what. Make it make sense.
guys is linkedin really that helpful; ive had it for years but i honestly dislike putting up my achievements and stuff like that on there :O.
It is very helpful
It helps you network. Your network is your net worth.
you make a valid point
You can be the best coder in the world, but if no one knows about it, why would they reach out to you?
I hardly use linkedin. You don't need to post on it. Just keep your job history, and a brief snippet of what team you are on and what you worked on up to date on there. I never posted anything on linked in, but it landed me an interview with OpenAI
youre so right; like i understand how beneficial it is but gosh idk the platform is kinda overwhelming to be on
that's dope ash !! see that's what i meant; i'm a really private person i don't even have an ig so linkedin is just like forcing to put tmi about myself and what i be doing out there; tho i will be using it to reach out to recruiters and stuff like that which is why i still have it
You don't have to use it much, but it's definitely a useful platform. Also good to connect with coworkers / ex-coworkers. I've had more than a few ex-coworkers reach out to me with cool opportunities to join their startups and what not (though I wasn't interested)
makes sense, im still a student but i see my fellow classmates have like an insane amount of connections and everything- that got me thinking whether i should start taking linkedin seriously or no;
Just connect with folks on there and keep your page up to date, just open it up once a year or whatever and do some maintenance haha. I don't know, people use it like a social network, I don't get it.
thanks stovoy ! totally will, also SAME idk the whole idea is simply bizarreeeeee to me
do gap years affect overall acceptance rates later on ? i know that what you do during that gap year can significantly change your scenario but otherwise what's the outlook like ?
This is a complex situation and will depend on what happened and various factors:
- Were you unable to find a job?
- Have you had life happen? (ex: parenthood, sick family member, etc.)
- Went around the world after selling your startup?
And then, how rusty are you, how is your competition, how are your demands, how is the culture of your country, etc.
i understand, but i also feel like no matter what i might say it'll end up sounding like an excuse. I personally did screw up in certain areas and did rather well in others but due to certain rules and regulations was held back a year. now even though it's quite common in my field (engineering), i do feel it's shunned upon quite often. ngl even though im pretty good at learning or coding, the fear of being frowned upon because of this gap year hits harder. i worry it might affect my own work ethic
this kinda took a tangent lol i apologise.
you are spending way more time thinking about yourself than anyone else. I guarantee you that people won't care and don't think about you.
What matters is what value can you bring? If you bring value, you are cool
AW SHUCKS youre right, i should focus on putting in the work instead. thanks man. i've been spending way too much time in my stinky head lately
put yourself in their shoes: you are trying to hire someone to help you build the next gen software. You don't care if they had a kid, a death in the family or had to stop school for a while. What you care about is whether or not they can help you build that awesome next gen software
absolutely, i just gotta suck it up essentially lolol
People perform normal human functions. As such everyone has a life story of their own. They ain't robots and you will see that everyone had to go through something
time to lock in
yeah. this was reassuring asf
Incredible man good for you 😀 glad you did not listen to close minded individuals and instead strayed from the "standard"
Ah Misunderstood your last message,
I completely agree adapting is the key, sticking with normal will get you overlooked or turned down
The company which was delaying by saying they need approval, made an offer and after accepting it verbally, they say they need approval again before giving offer letter.
Lmao, the process going on for 4+ months now
Thats some solid a** reinforcement learning
Standards and templates exist for a reason, theyre effective
Sticking with the normal based on feedback I got on the server and direcrly speaking to a friend of a friend who used ro do recruiting in the tech space landed me 4 interviews and 2 offers in less than 10 applications 🤷♀️
So no, you won't just get turned down and overlooked if you follow best industry practices
Different areas have their own standards, you shouldnt use an american template in germany
Standards change depending on where you apply. Some countries having your picture on your CV. Some countries like Germany prefer education first, regardless of your actual YoE
In South Africa it's standard practice to include cell, address, married/single, driver's license. So I obviously used the feedback from the server, ans then adapted it to the standard of my local market
Their advice seems to be "put as much shit in your cv as possible" and thats terrible advice
The point is to find a job, not conduct experiments
You start with the templates and if they don't work you tweak
You dont start with a 5 page resume
Wow, that's awful.
If all I gotta do is sign an I9 shortly before the hiring date, I should be good to go right? Like I shouldn’t bother interviewing and stuff
You have an offer, you've accepted and given notice, etc. Yah, you should be good. Unless you have some reason to think they'll revoke the offer.
Nah I cleared their background check
Yea I didn’t forget this time. Everything is in the folder.
no.
are you doing a cs degree?
going to join online one
perfect. as one of my close friends on this server says, a degree is your least path of resistance. don't forget to network too, as your network is your net worth.
but i am looking for jobs while am doing online degree
that's good man, internships?
so i thought this pcap can increase my chances
nah, an internship is looking for projects and potential, really.
solid resume as well.
i also have a feeling its not worth but one of my cousin from my family who is in cybersec is telling me its worth.. like its cherry on top of projects
Maybe tell us about your background and what types of jobs you want?
web dev
i'm gonna eat some bfast, be back shortly.
The general consensus is that programming certs aren't helpful for SWE positions, since they're just the basics. For other positions, they can be helpful.
For example, there are tons of good cybersecurity certs out there
what if like i wish to freelance while am doing my distance degree.. i really think a pcap certified freelancer can get more clients
yh i saw comptia ones but not relevant to like programming
well, yea. cybersec is extremely broad.
https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/ this is online degree i was talking about
Learn Programming and Data Science with opportunity to get a Bachelor’s Degree (BS or BSc based on credits completed) or Diploma (Programming or Data Science) from IIT Madras upon successfully completing required courses. First of its kind undergraduate program that leverages the ease of web-enabled learning.
any one have any suggestions on this
iit, huh.
its thier online one anyone can apply if they clear a foundational test
my dad went to IIT Kharagpur.
that might be btech which needs JEE
forgot what engineering he did tho lol
What certificiations are you thinking about? Generally speaking, studies >>>> paid certificate > projects, and it depends on the certificate too
Seems light tbh
exceptionally. the course curriculum is what you'd cover in https://automatetheboringstuff.com/
yh
300dollars
If you absolutely want to take a certificate to get in DS, you have to get some type of degree, online if you can't do otherwise, and the usefull and beneficial certificates are like, cloud-related or pyspark related
but i am not looking to get into DS.. i am looking for SDE jobs
I've seen no evidence that anyone cares about PCAP or any programming cert like it. Freelancers get hired based on good reviews and a good portfolio
that DS degree was the only good online cs related degree i could find
I did freelancing before finishing my degree, clients could not care less about certificates
so me putting those certs in Certification while applying for jobs in upwork doesnt increase my chances?
And pcap cover basics, any valuable certificates deep dive into professional aspects
it make proposal better i thought if i have certifications
That's what people charging money for certs would like you to believe but again, where's the evidence that anyone actually cares?
Maybe it wouldn't hurt to include it if you already have it, but I wouldn't waste any time or money getting it (and of course, don't lie)
Infra vendor certs are another story... If you're doing AWS stuff for example, their associate and especially professional level certs do carry a little bit of weight
not sure whether to take or not
but they have cloud related ones right?
It can only be an addition to a degree and experience, especially when it's obviously supplementary work from yourself, or a formation financed by your company, but a certification alone..'
Well, it's today. ETA 2h
I've sort of already gone through the motions and I'm just feeling like nothing
Got tips for me to do good? Anything works at this point
It's just some conversation with some person. Embrace the small talk.
Be ready for basic question: "Tell me about yourself" "What are you looking for" "Tell me about your last job" etc.
You can include personal details in the answer (ie: if you have a hobby, etc). You just want them to see you, not your resume.
Ookay - just a talk first to get to know me as a person, yeah. Should I prepare for the harder questions also? Any that might come up?
Technical questions, EXP, etc.
I don't know how they'll interview. but, it's pretty normal to start with a "tell me about yourself" question.
For technical questions, it's impossible to guess or prepare. Just don't panic: talk out your thought process, and listen if they try to guide you to an answer.
Also, know what you want to say if they ask about salary expectations, or your current salary,
If you've got two hours, personally, I think you're better served by going for a run and taking a shower (or favorite leisure activity) over prepping answers for questions you may or may not hear.
You can't learn anything you don't already know in that amount of time, it's better to do things that put you in a good headspace than try to cram.
When Initially asked, I listed a bit below the market average - I wanted to be sure that I wasn't asking too much for perceived little skill by my part - $1800 on my currency, while the average is about ~$2300-2400 for juniors.
We didn't really discuss titles.
I'm perfectly fine earning $1800 though, because that's almost triple I learn currently.
I'm kind of afraid to push it with them and try raising to the market average, but I don't want to go any lower - so I'll stick to $1800
Tip about the "tell me about yourself" question: a mistake many people tend to make is to go into way too much depth. Just, "I'm from X and I studied Y in school, now I'm looking for a job in Z", maybe throw a few extra facts in for the interviewer to ask about or follow up with a question of your own. Don't give them your life story.
also known as https://youtu.be/MabLtuTpDw8
It's a conversation starter, not an invitation to perform your dramatic villain monologue
Should I mention relevant information about how I'm connected to programming?
You know, things like I started programming at X and Y, etc. You know, redirect the conversation towards the talking point...?
That's fine IMO. You're framing how you want the conversation to go, giving the interviewer a place to start.
My main advice about this question is absolutely do not be the first one to give a number.
I try to ask them for their range pretty early if it wasn't public to begin with. Then if they ask about salary expectations I simply say that their range is acceptable, or maybe that I expect to be on the high end of their range if it's low.
Then you make them love you and await their offer
They've already given number, so I guess it's moot at this point.
Well, then I already botched this up 🥴
I think I'll just stick to it.
Most people do (botch this up). It's tough, because they'll often insist that you do.
i negotiated my current employer up 5K. it takes cojones and a strategy.
Yeah, I learned the hard way too myself
But, if they decided to keep interviewing you, and the number is good, then go with it. They want to interview you.
Perhaps that's a reason for them getting back at me; cause I'm very cheap relative to other, common developers in my area? I do fill their requirements and even some of their wishlist
Regardless, I suppose it does not really matter now; I'm getting a shot for a true job which pays triple I earn and has a relevant title to get experience.
Which would solve 80% of my problems right now.
Feels kinda unreal that she was the one to approach me in first place - she sent a LinkedIn message with the offer telling that she looked through my page, and found it interesting. Funny that the opportunity presented itself
Yup, just don't overthink it. Going for a walk is a great idea.
working out is good for reducing your anxiety!
That's good! Do be careful if it truly seems too good to be true. Recruiter scams seem to be on the rise lately. Not trying to make you paranoid, just watch for any really blatant red flags
I mean like, don't let them send you an advance check before you have a formal offer, etc.
I'll see about watching something funny for a bit, and have lunch early so I feel alright by the interview
While at it, are there other trick questions that I should be aware/prepared for?
I'm particularly interested about tips regarding the "What's your weakness" one, because frankly, I have no answer for that.
I do have weakness; my experience and practical knowledge, but do I just say that?
Always make it about strength, by talking about a challenge that you overcome.
I don't think I've ever asked or been asked an actual trick question in an interview.
The weakness question is a genuine question: do you know your weaknesses? (and a logical followup) do you have strategies to mitigate them?
Great examples here https://www.themuse.com/advice/4-ways-to-answer-whats-your-biggest-weakness-that-actually-sound-believable
"Currently, I'd say my biggest waekness would be the lack of practical experience, which I'm actively working to remediate by doing X, Y, Z? Like this?
I'll read this now, give me a second,
That's right, yes
That's a good formula. Great if you can mention concrete examples (this was a problem for me in my last project because of such and such, and I mitigated it by ...)
My biggest weakness is my lack of pratical experience in the field, in which was a problem for my project as a developer at X, where I had difficulties keeping up with the development cycles and flow of work. I've been working on solving that by actively participating and contributing in team-oriented environments such as open source organizations, hackathons, etc
I think this might be my go-to
Well, 1:15h to go.
I'll make myself some juice, get a show going, and wait,
I say public speaking and dive deep into examples on how I fixed it
Good luck 💪
💪
I would reframe "difficulties keeping up" with something more specific and limited if you can. Maybe something more like, "I had to use technology Y, which I knew nothing about", for example. That's a real challenge, but doesn't inherently imply that you underperformed
Twenty five minutes to go.
I'm feeling like the moyai statue. I'm just checking if everything's alright and chilling before the interview, but still feeling a bit anxious
I'll join fifteen minutes before the interview is supposed to start. Early is on time and all that
I would advise 5 mins at most
It's over
I'm not sure how to feel, it was not awful
Hopefully it's positive. With interviewing it's a numbers game for the most part: do so many that you don't feel the nerves before the interview you really want to pass
Anyone knows if being a EU Citizen, do i need a Visa to work in Poland? This is to answear the question: "Are you legally authorized to work in Poland?"
Not awful is good 🙂
Nice thanks
Were do i sign up? ahah
One of the places i would love to work is Germany, tho i would spend a bit too much on the ring and rentals
But since i have a cousin there for over 10 years i would probably have a easier time than a lot of ppl going there
Ah sorry, i meant car rentals for the nurburgring
It's a circuit 🙂 for cars
I'll sumarize what was asked;
- Tell me about yourself,
"I'm P, pleased to meet you - I'm a student at X university coursing Systems Analysis and Development, and I've been a developer for N years and have been working with Y and Z." - What are your experiences?
"I am, primarily, a volunteer software developer and contributor to a few open and closed source projects and am actively working in a NGO called Viprsec - a cybersecurity-focused organization that developed a detection threat model for malware within the PyPI ecosystem. I also work at Y startup company as an intern software developer, and also am a occasionally a freelancer for extra income." - What tools have you used during your time at Vipyrsec?
"We use a fair variety of tools in our tech stack - we primarily use Python as the programming language for our infrastructure along with frameworks such as FastAPI, SQLalchemy, HTTPX, etc, exception being that our scanner client is written in Rust. We also use database services such as Postgres for cataloging and registering malware detections."
(I heavily fucked up by not mentioning Kubernetes and the cloud infra. Argh." - Are you paid?
"No. The organization is non-profit, and albeit we run in a company-like environment, we are all volunteers." - What's your biggest weakness?
"I lack practical experience with certain industry-standard tools. For instance, when I first boarded up at Vipyrsec, I had issues regarding FastAPI and the microservice architecture - and I'm actively fighting to solve this by studying industry standard tools and practices." - What's your biggest achievement in your career?
I completely blanked out at this - the hell do I answer? I had already glazed Vipyrsec so freaking much. So, I just ended up completely derailed by it, so I just choose a random freaking job I did as a freelancer - one from nowhere about some backend job for a startup.
I stuttered a lot and went 'hmmm'
I think I screwed up.
Sounds like you did great. And 'hmm' and 'umm' is normal when you're nervous: they're not hiring you to be a salesperson
I dunno, I was not nearly as composed like it's written
I tried being as clear as possible, but ended up stuttering and repeating myself
- are you paid?
"Uuh, no - Vipyrsec does not pay its developers, it's a non-profit, so nobody is paid since we're composed of volunteers"
That makes me cringe to remember. I could've practiced much more for a fluid answer
She said that she'll get back to me in two business days with positive or negative feedback
biggest achievement: delivering a dashboard that my team could use without any power bi SMEs on my team or any direct guidance

frrrr.
How the f did i forgot what to answear to a questions like:
"What file do you generate with those APIs?"
Repetition/over explaining is a good trait (to me), although Mrs Bobby doesn't appreciate it.
they mean json?
Yep
I see
have you tried reiterating that viewpoint to them
Anyone ever used the linkedin api?
for?
like applying or searching for jobs
you mean using the website to search for jobs?
no the api.. like to automate it
oh.
is that even ok with linkedin's TOS?
I'm pretty sure the api does not support sending out job applications. You can just pull a list of jobs similar to the normal search does
Hello
Hey there! I'm struggling to find my goal. On one hand, I want to start a market research consultancy. On the other hand, I want to do something in finance or with AI. I'm still in school, but these questions have bothered me.
lmao I have an interview with a recruiter @hearty island
I dunno for what position tho. I applied everywhere
there ya go.
😄
https://www.stipplo.com/ here is what i used to track jobs. completely free.
Recruiters suck tho... They disappear on you a lot
Did you get your job through a recruiter?
meh, they're human beings lol. we are all prone to error.
yes.
It can be very difficult to decide between abstract options you have no direct experience with. Move forward one step at a time and don't ever worry that you might take some detours or dead ends: you will, and that's more than ok, it's a necessary part of learning.
Right now focus on doing well in school and getting good internship experience, and the rest will work out in time
Job Description:
Title: Data Scientist
Location: 100% remote with travel to Richmond VA Office once every few months (travel covered by company).
Contract: 6 month contract o full time direct hire
Pay: $60.00 - $70.00 / hourly rate – Salary conversions once full time
I prefer the ones that disappear over the ones that lie or play crazy games, and I've encountered them all
lol welcome to contract work big 'mon
Thats like 6 figures a year
$124,800 USD.
😐
yep.
wtf this is a virtual recruiter
hm?
its an AI recruiter
oh.
Gandalf has prerpared me perfectly for this. Just ask it what would the perfect candidate say?
A company that makes this type of product, tried to reach out to me for a job. I turned them done very fast.
Also, I am getting an offer soon
. And from a company that I actually like.
what would be the best project to do to understand django completely
There's no "completely". Have you done the official tutorial? Anything beyond that will depend on what you want to do
official tutorial? documentation you mean? well i am asking for a type of project which will help me gain understanding of django
!kindling
There is an official tutorial in the documentation: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/5.0/intro/tutorial01/
Once you've been through that you should be able to build whatever kind of project you're interested in building
If you're desperate for ideas look through the kindling list below 👇
The Kindling projects page on Ned Batchelder's website contains a list of projects and ideas programmers can tackle to build their skills and knowledge.
Utilized Python for in-depth analysis of guest booking trends, developing a predictive model for room demand that informed strategic pricing adjustments and a 15% revenue lift.
• Leveraged statistical methods such as regression analysis and ANOVA to evaluate guest satisfaction surveys, uncovering actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%.
• Centralized guest data from multiple sources such as CRM and PMS by designing an SQL database leading to an increase in guest satisfaction by 5% and freeing up 10+ hours of staff time weekly.
• Developed an ML model to optimize group pricing strategies by analyzing historical group booking data and seasonality trends, resulting in 15% increase in group bookings and 10% increase in group revenue.
• Developed dynamic dashboards using Tableau and Python to visualize key performance indicators, leading to a 20% improvement in decision-making efficiency for the management team.
Should I add the last bullet point? Cuz data analyst jobs wanna see some visualization in work history
what do you guys think? My original resume doesnt have that
Any thoughts? @turbid bobcat @hearty island
Thanks
Hello
yup
oh okay
I used RNN
I used ARIMA for the first bullet
Should I say
Conducted in-depth analysis of guest booking trends and developed an ARIMA model for room demand, which informed strategic pricing adjustments, leading to a 15% increase in revenue.
I use Hadoop for database
or Spark
I mean to build RNN you need to code a lot
import torch.nn as nn
class SoftMaxRegressionEnhanced(nn.Module):
def __init__(self, input_features=80, hidden_features=[256, 128, 64], output_features=40):
super(SoftMaxRegressionEnhanced, self).__init__()
layers = []
layers.append(nn.Flatten())
layers.append(nn.Linear(input_features, hidden_features[0]))
layers.append(nn.BatchNorm1d(hidden_features[0]))
layers.append(nn.ReLU())
layers.append(nn.Dropout(0.5))
for i in range(1, len(hidden_features)):
layers.append(nn.Linear(hidden_features[i-1], hidden_features[i]))
layers.append(nn.BatchNorm1d(hidden_features[i]))
layers.append(nn.ReLU())
layers.append(nn.Dropout(0.5))
layers.append(nn.Linear(hidden_features[-1], output_features))
self.network = nn.Sequential(*layers)
def forward(self, x):
return self.network(x)
I do stuff like this
I have a job offer for: This position reports to the (gov office). Incumbent will assist in development and implementation of LMI initiatives. Produce content in a collaborative environment for reports, analyses, dashboards, and other reports under supervision of the unit manager. Provide support on matters of statistical methodology and analysis. . The offer is for a part time, 9 month contract position. I'm going to attend OMSCS next semester (statistics UG). The title for this job is workforce data scientist. I only have research experience. Is this a role worth putting on my resume before going for SWE/data engineer/ML internships during my MS or should I wait for something else?
I did a recommender system. Does that count? @turbid bobcat
Maybe I will remove MLE from there
Just do Data Scientist
Im applying for Data Analyst, Data Scientist positions
Is this better?
Data Scientist May 2019 – Present

wtf I meant @turbid bobcat
• Developed a predictive model with time-series and clustering analysis to identify at-risk schools during and after
COVID-19 epidemic, enabling proactive interventions and a 10% reduction in course failures.
• Created interactive data visualizations using Plotly and Seaborn to illustrate the impact of COVID-19 epidemic on
student learning, informing data-driven decisions that led to an 8% improvement in standardized test scores.
• Presented comprehensive exam results analysis to school administrators, highlighting areas for improvement and
driving strategic curricular adjustments that resulted in a 10% increase in student success in 6 months
How is this one for my internship?
Idk I prefer the other one lol
I mean student success cannot be measured in numbers
you go by number of students
If I give numbers like that the bullets would be long
If you have no better offer in the pipeline, you take the offer you have
like math scores went from bla bla to bla bla science scores went from bla bla to bla bla
I don't need the money and I would have to go LDR with my GF. just wondering how much of a career impact it will have
yeah but the bullets shouldnt be longer than 2 spaces
no percent increase in all subjects
They never gave us the numbers when we did the internship
they said these these happened after the meeting
because districts have different schools. They only gave us the percentage total from 20 schools in the area
I would have to say this school had this much increase this school has this much increase
There are 20 schools or so
Like this is one district
10% reduction in course failures across 9 districts?
If you have zero relevant experience, then that could help your resume a whole lot
But when you say you have "research experience", it's hard to tell how that compares
well Im not sure how many students are in district
Modeling health data at a medical school, and drug interaction data at a flagship state uni
we were not given any info on that. We just had test scores. We presented what we found and they met with us a few months later and said how it helped @turbid bobcat
They gave us average test scores from each district
yeah!
Also why cant I make $ sign in latex? It doesnt work....
Back slash before it
ugh it goes to second page if I add more stuff tho
Reverse back slash actually
It's a pretty subjective judgement call. Think about how this opportunity will look on your current resume as a total package. Do your best to get a sense of what better alternatives you can reasonably expect. I would especially be looking for recent graduates/ current students of your degree program to see what they're finding for internships.
Is a data scientist position a good way to transition into SWE after a mscs? obviously any work experience is a ++
Well this is a template. I cant adjust it
This template must be really good @hearty island people are raving about it on Reddit
They said education must be on top @turbid bobcat
Yessir. Well imo my education goes on the top.
I’ll let others pitch in
It says if you are well into your career it should be at the bottom
I would begin as you want to go on. Experience under one title can be relevant to the other, but if DS is not really what you want to be doing, then better not to head in that direction
Yeah not enough tbh :/
I can only apply to entry level jobs... Most junior or senior posiitons asks for at least 6 years
I can't exactly find SWE work as a stats major though. What would be the next best option?
Really? Damn lucky you
This is for an entry level job
Bachelor's degree required BS in science/engineering discipline
Required Skills
Minimum of 3 years industry experience. Must have experience with Data Management, Data Entry/Collecting, and Change Management/Change Control exp
Must have Data Scientist exp (gathering & collecting data)
Must have GMP knowledge
Will be trained on internal systems
Must have working knowledge of Tableau, extremely helpful
Pharma exp highly preferred (maybe FDA exp)
Pure Manufacturing data exp (CART)
Literally Entry Level Jobs require at least 3 years in the US now. They have a new section called early career where you need a year of experience
Early Career jobs require no experience
This is not necessarily the case at all, but it depends on what skills you have. If you don't need the money, a really good project of your own design might be a better use of your time.
• Bachelors in a quantitative field, Master’s degree is a plus, and 2+ years of industry experience
• Solid understanding of analytics techniques and statistics
• Ability to write clean and concise code, especially in Python or R
• Knowledge and experience of writing and tuning SQL
• Experienced performing thorough exploratory analysis
• Ability to partner with cross-functional teams using strong written and verbal communication
• Demonstrable track record of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering results in a dynamic environment
• Initiative on solving problems and completing tasks in a reasonable time frame
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Positive, can-do attitude
another entry level job
I have time for both but lack creativity 🗿
Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
Proven experience as a Data Scientist, preferably with experience in the energy or battery industry.
Strong proficiency in machine learning frameworks (e.g. XGBoost, PyTorch, TensorFlow) and Python.
Experience with NLP and chatbot development.
Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and data management tools.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
this is also an entry level hahahahaha
If you are fresh from college in the US. You are dead
Those requirements aren't too insane
A growing number of entry-level jobs require experience, according to an analysis from LinkedIn. As of 2021, 38.4 percent of entry-level job postings required at least three years of experience [1]. That’s especially true for many corporate careers, such as UX design, web development, information security, social media marketing, and product management. On average, it’s common to see 1 to 3 years of experience required, as well as a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Stop looking at linkedin tags, the default is entry level and people dont care to change it
This is the US. Europe has better entry level jobs
A recent analysis of over 95,000 job postings by job-matching software firm TalentWorks revealed how difficult it can be for newly minted grads to find an entry-level job within their experience level. The research found that 61 percent of all full-time jobs seeking entry-level employees required at least three years or more of experience.
Links please.
I dont think any analysis of "entry level" posts (by tag) on linkedin is valid
They all fail to acknowledge the key cause, people are lazy
Recruiters, HR and such just dont care enough or dont know how to change those fields on linkedin
Or maybe its Linkedin itself fucking up the analysis of the job description and randomly assigning tags that dont match, gotta use AI somehow i guess 🤷♀️
well I dunno how many times I changed my resume
Look at the job market to identify what skills you need to demonstrate to get where you really want to be. From there you can work backwards to generate project ideas.
On the one hand, the job offer you have in hand does sound like a decent opportunity. But on the other it sounds like you know you want to be doing something else. Focus on that something else if you know what is, or take the offer you have in hand if you don't
I applied like 200 jobs with no call backs so
4 months ago
0 people clicked apply
Tell me youre a shit workplace without telling me youre a shit workplace, not even the bots wanna deal with you
on my previous resume where I applied to jobs my education was at the bottom so that didnt hekped
so Im not sure whats going on
I just changed the template of the resume to see if I will get call backs
and I dont think its gonna help
Need to abolish LinkedIn and go back to handing out printed CVs in the street
Oh
Im just gonna make up a number for students in Columbia County
I found it online. Its around 10K
I wouldn't mind data engineering or a ML role, so i think that this is an alright offer. Does part time/contract matter?

okay for the last one
I didnt lead any team at all

@turbid bobcat How is this?
no like daily @turbid bobcat
you can do that without python and Task Scheduler?
hmmmmm
I usually run scripts I create
okay

@turbid bobcat I changed it.
math
I did this thing where I added a reverse slash and it worked
yes, it's escaping
yep
Would you say you put your education first or later on in your resume? Just curious.
would I say? I have it first
I have it first as well, some people say to keep it like last
But like idk, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it?
I would keep it first too

Travel time! Two companies want to fly me out to meet the team ;p
Not sure if I am going to do the other one. But one of those companies already gave me an offer. So obv go to that one.
Gotta love the late call asking if I can just come the next day :D
ayyyyyy, see? you're swimming in contacts man
How does my education section look? Because of my school's integrated master's program (and me being 1 year ahead), I will be completing my master's in the same year as my bachelor's. However, I haven't yet taken any M.S. courses, and won't be doing so until the start of my junior year. I am a sophomore right now. Should I remove that line until I physically start the M.S courses?
PENN STATE MENTIONED AAAAAAH, goated school 🐐
w
i got in but it's fucking expensive as hell fr fr
i would keep it if it's intended.

did i not cook, i said what i said 😭
most important thing comes first and always use reverse chronological order. A masters is more impotant than a bsc.
So I would:
- Reverse the order
- it's common enough to use
expectedin front of the date if it is in the future
For both entries?
sure
There is also a world where you group the diplomas by the school as well, but not sure how ATSes would eat that
yea you have a strong gpa, i wld defo include it
Thanks
yeah
my gpa undergrad was a 3.72 💀
that will probably be mine after physics 2
I also see little value in the course ID like STAT 462. No one but you and alumni will have any clue what that means
are you shooting for stats/ml/ds roles?
that's my guess based off your major concentration
Okay, I'll delete them, it's probably for the best. I simply saw it in someone else's resume and figured I'd do the same haha
Machine Learning is the goal yeah but this summer I'll go for DS/Stats internships since I think they are a lot less competitive
That's how a lot of things on resumes happen: someone saw it on someone else and just copy it.
But it's not like I would know the class ids of all the colleges across the USA
And on the bright side, without it makes your resume breathe better or more space for more interesting classes to call out
mostly in pennsylvania, or are you open to relocation?
open to relocate
smart. yea, i'm trying to convince my under-grad people from my college to try to extend their scope across the US for internships. there's a lot of competition in NY, where i am.
@smoky quest Should projects go above experience in a resume?
when i used to have projects on mine, i'd put them below.
In general no as professional experience trumps projects. But for students, your projects will be more interesting than your waiter job
@safe coral https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/3977057596
For fuck’s sake, apply anyways. It’s literally 1-3 years of experience 😭. What do you have to lose?
I think you need a dose of the fuck it we ball mentality
You might as well apply man, you’re qualified enough.
worst they can say is no
i believe so, btw censor your number lmao
you don't want crazed internet stalkers lol
I dunno how more I can refine it tbh. I believe this is my final
what are your target industries?
Data Analyst (Tech, Business, Medicine)
Data Scientist(Tech, Medicine, Business)
I guess I can do IT jobs too? 👽
did you use "analyst" on linkedin and ctrl + F "years"/"year" to hop through jobs?
Yup
ok, did you find jobs through that?
not at all, just surprised
Yeah I applied bunch today and yesterday @hearty island
what are you using to track your apps?
I have a general question with respect to resumes
If you two masters degrees, is it okay to just leave off your bachelors?
I would keep it.
- It helps give context and history
- There are so many educational paths that there are sometimes people getting masters without a bsc
I had no idea that's even possible
pretty much every possible combination. There are so many people who change majors, leave schoo and come back, people who are jumping classes early, people who are redoing classes, schools that offer integrated curriculum, schools that offers complement degrees or other things, etc.
On top of that you can add that each country has a slightly different way of doing things
Yeah, makes sense now that I think about it
I am doing front-end development from 3 years. i am little tired of front-end. and i am thinking to try backend. what will you suggest ? I am doing reactjs , should i try full stack frameworks first like next, remix and then move to language. I am kind of confused what technology should i choose, which database should i prefer... a lot mess with confusion
it doesn't really matter too much
tbh, you are right. tbh... I don't like JS to use as backend 😄 . Why flask gaining so much popularity or still prefer Django ?
use the right tool for the job. flask and django are better suited for different scenarios
what do you mean by right job ? do you mean, use tool according to project size ?
project size and needs yes
any final tip or suggestion or advise ?
check out fastapi as well
I am currently a "Software Engineer". (development role with java)
I got an offer for "Design Engineer 1" role (C, C++ with chip design for ML, tensorFlow etc).
Lets say I get promoted to "Design Engineer 2". Will I have trouble switching job to SDE3 role from Design Engineer 2?
Interview was related to software and MLand they told me memory management and dsp is what i need to learn
you should ask for the job description and understand how it relates to your career and your goals
If you aren't making the decisions for your career, then you are letting others make it for you
Yes this is kinda what they mentioned
They told me about the job but asking for jd after getting offer letter might be weird
You should make sure you understand the job you are interviewing for. By the stage you get an offer, you ought to understand what is the job about
Are you willing to blindly sign an offer? What if it's an area you hate or do not want to grow a career into?
Actually it is more about how easy if would be to switch to sde3, they did discuss it would be doing C mostly.
What is SDE3 for you?
Seniority and someone who again can work on general software( not limited to embedded systems)
It's a cost function defined by the distance between your skills and the required skills.
As you grow in seniority, the demand in depth do also increase and that's also why you do see less people doing big jumps in domains.
So if you spend 2 years doing DSP and C, it would be more difficult to compete with other candidates who have done java and DBs and cloud for 2 years for jobs that require java, DBs and cloud
And so that's why, if you go into a job that mostly works with DSPs and C, then it will makes future paths related to DSP and C more accessible for you and other paths that are further less accessible
Which goes back to my initial point about making sure you know what job you are getting into so that you can make sure it's aligned with your career goals
If i learn a lot of system design,
And be exceptional in DSA.
Will faang still prefer other candidate’s?
How about HFT, they need C++
But also finance exp.
Will i be a Jack of all s***, master of none?
I am a mechanical engineer by degree, dont know what to do, its not like java was my expertise, but was still make to do that work after being hired for data science
FAANG covers all sorts of companies and each one has literally tens of thousands of engineers. If you take facebook, they have webapps, datacenters, mobile devices, their own compilers, their own big data platforms, their own ML libraries, etc.
So you are gonna have to be more specific 😉
or go out, have dinner and meet people at said companies that can vouch for you
Pick some goals and work backward from there
A reoccurring theme I see online about FAANG hiring is that referrals play a non-negligible part in the hiring process
Personally the goal is hft, i am just switching around at the moment, while i improve my profile
That's not the norm.
However:
- Anyone can open their own company and as such, there will always be at least one bozo in the world that can be found
- It can happen at more senior levels when they are hiring for someone who will have to train other engineers. As such familiarity with the language and technology will be key
Would you want to work for a company that makes superficial decisions like this?
problem solved! 😄
Sure. Then look at the overlap of skills between the job and your target for HFT.
Though, not trying to be a party pooper, but HFT will be highly competitive
Yeah, specially when i have mechanical engineer degree.
Go to job on a boat
How well do you know Amsterdam? Have you been? I have several friends working out of there and I have some general tips
If I wanted to argue for your job, HFT is also pretty wide and can cover java from C/C++ to even more hardware stuff like fpga/dsp/etc.
So if I was you, I would look at the last bit, how frequently it is used in your country and how the skills you acquire at that job could serve you
Exactly, that was I was going to tell you about specifically haha
Thats a Nice problem to have given you get the job.
This is a very cold take: Amsterdam is not a city for everyone anyway. Many of my friends live in other cities in Holland and commute when they need to go to the office. Public transport is really good.
I lived in the NL for some months, if you have any questions feel free to DM 🙂
I don t like Amsterdam as a dutchie way too crowded and a lot of ppl taking bad stuff
Yup, hence why I said " Amsterdam is not a city for everyone anyway" 😄
I'm not sure I like it either
Ok so apparently the mathmatical questions for the interview seem to be Fermi estimations, i am in fact not in a good position to answers bcs i never did this.
i am watching some videos on it, i understand some parts of it but applying is a whole different story
How is no one here affected by the outage lol
Linux enjoyers 😌
morning everyone! Oh damn
Hello Everyone!!
I have recently completed my core and advanced python course. What should I do next in Python like learning libraries? if yes., then which one first and all like that
depends on your interests. what do you wanna do in your career?
I actually want to get into a blend of managerial skills and coding skills
for eg. Project Management in IT Company
ok if you wanna do project mgt, you should do your best and obtain a CAPM cert. certified associate project manager.
Ahmm got it
fair enough lol, well i ain't learning this in 3h that is for sure
as for IT, do you know what specifically in IT? chances are you are not starting immediately as a project manager.
For what people are saying on glassdoor it's a form first, then we present it to the manager. i guess we can use the internet but we need to explain our logic behind it + answer some curve ball questions i guess
Yeah not starting immediately. I am thinking to complete my Bachelors and then get into Python Developer (but also as seeing the rise of AI, I am concerned that whether seeking Python on advance level a good thing or not) and then go for my Masters in Business Administration
do not be afraid of AI lol
haha somewhat it is concerning because of the fact Python is easy to understand and work upon
no, it's not. ai hallucinates fake info all the time. it's not reliable.
i'm trying to assuage your worries
if you wanna do IT i would look into information systems and stuff. what country are you in?
India
ok. lots of competition there.
Yeah for real.
@hearty island what about date science as a career
what about it?
How is it
it's rather challenging with tons of math
Iike how can i land a job on that
interesting projects, internships, bachelors + masters, and demonstrated skills
Hmmm i have an interest in data science for some reason
do you like math? are you into calc and stats?
I have a good brain that understand maths so yaa
ok, i would look at the resources pinned in #data-science-and-ml .
But i have the doubt that am i doing it wrong
why is that?
I don't know doubting myself is kindof thing that i was born with so
SWE?
software engineering
it's a QA Engineer role this time
dude, Duo (the MFA) is completely down
multi factor authentication, https://duo.com/product/multi-factor-authentication-mfa
Honestly don't even know because the question list is quite extensive and is more oriented to network + administration, topics:
IPv4, IPv6, mask, default gateway, MAC, NAT, routing, DHCP, DNS, NTFS, FAT, Windows and Linux administration. Math Questions: exponents, binary & hexadecimal conversion.
it might just be my stupid phone
maybe they got got by crowdstrike
"Update - We are continuing to monitor for any further issues and can confirm that Duo services remain fully operational. We are unable to provide any status related updates for the Crowdstrike and Microsoft issues.
Jul 19, 2024 - 05:50 EDT
Update - We are currently monitoring multiple customer reports indicating connectivity issues with Duo services and believe this is related to current Crowdstrike & Microsoft issues. We confirm that Duo's services remain fully operational, provided that a stable network route is maintained, and we are unable to issue or renew certs for Trusted Endpoints.
We also recommend reaching out to your ISP for assistance and checking their status page for the latest updates on this matter."
Welcome to Duo's home for real-time and historical data on system performance.
no idea man, that's a really good q
it'll be communicating with duo servers, presumably at some point there's a link in the chain that's a windows machine protected by crowdstrike
it’s all these systems interacting together in a chain, and if one goes down it’s all fucked. Especially my company, we don’t use cutting edge tech
the duo servers don't necessarily have to be windows, but there might just be some link in the service chain
Memery
oh 🐳, i wonder if our payroll vendor is down too?
yea bro fuck us i guess 💀
if someone's using chatgpt to write their kernel driver i'm going to jump off a bridge
dayforce, the company's payroll vendor
You will have a big surprise when you enter industry 😁
aaaaahhhh we are cooked lmaoo, i wonder if my dad's even working today
i don't want to live in a world with gpt written kernel drivers
fuuuuuuckkkk chat gpt. just fuck that shit.
software is already so fucked, chatgpt might be the last nail in the coffin
meanwhile my ass pivoted hard to finance
i'm not a quant, i'll be making front-facing biz intel dashboards
exactly. thanks lisan, you're a G
the amount of people who aren't excel literate scares me. that literally ask me to do their work for them smh
but hey if everyone is excel literate, i'm out of a job
tap into the deficiencies of the skills you see around people in your place, you'll have a great time
true that man.
dude i was doing xlookups for a friend of mine at my last internship on vacay 💀
fam she hit me uppppp
eh she's smart and we talk a lot now
.... she's smart and we talk a lot now? she's glad i bailed her out of a tough spot. i'd always do that for a teammate
if someone's in an emergency, i'd rather be the guy they come to
being the miracle man is always cool
eh she hit me up at like 11 AM, i was just walking on a beach
if you've got a profit share go for it, if not then i don't see the point lol
anyways she works at optum now, so go her fs
i somehow get paid more than her even tho she has her bachelors/masters and currently going for nursing as well. i consider that luck tho.
i got the higher paying one bc i worked my ass off and pivoted. lil bit of luck too.
yep, i agree w you
she did her degree in healthcare admin, i went way more technical. biz analytics. but like biz analytics is generalist tbh
even then it's more technical than healhcare admin
yea, agreed.
oh for fuck's sake lmaoooo.
People do, about half of them... Every single year
people do their MSF without knowing the 3 financial statements........ the fucking holy trinity
like you'd be surprised how many people are like ooga booga the financial statements are linked???
Hitting the previous topic I find that some unis teach differentiation in excel.
finance frat bros give finance the wrong name lolll
I mean along the columns, shift by one, subtract. That works for the most basic case but he'll if that's differentiation
so are you a sweng? or what?
a software engineer? nah fam.
i'm more of a BI guy who works at a firm
what kind of python work do you end up doing at your job?
none 💀, we may not even use python as it may not suit our needs.
we don't even use python at my current job bc it runs into issues with sustainable power bi visuals.
Don't ask me. Poor fellas, they will get stuck at some point and need to do it all by themselves. Likely at the entry to the job market.
I blame pass rates. People complain when you fail many students. But in my honest opinion there are terms in which I would fail the entire class. And that would be for the better for all of them. Better to fail early rather than discover than your entire degree is kind of junk after you got it. Context: I lecture linear algebra.
(very opinionated post I know)
Heh, yes, very true. I could rant that in the "good old times" university was different. But the reality is that unis need to adapt to a world where figuring out what needs to be done is more important than how to do it. And no one has any good ideas on how to do that. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy
And if I were to speculate, and I'm already speculating, the job market reflects that. Entry roles are about doing something that isn't particularly useful to anyone. And then a massive barrier to move further into positions where decisions are made. We just moved the bar from "few people get to uni, into few people get past the "menial" tech/science jobs"
i like to teach people finance and excel
i was a TA for a bit at hofstra, lol.
only like one sem and it was quite informal
people really have to adjust their communication styles when they teach, or the students fall asleep
I'm crossing fingers you're right. Yet hoping for an idea as to how adapt the uni system is more or less free market implementation. The idea is just hard, yours truly here can't come up with anything 😢
There's also the question of the correct amount of joking and clown behaviour. You don't want to only "be funny". You want to be funny at the right moment, so the brain associates the good emotion of laughing with that exact point of the material. Teaching is good fun and there is a good deal of technicality in it. But perhaps it is also an argument as to why not all researches are good teachers
yea, i agree. idk, i'll speak more informally depending on who i talk to. if it's a student i know i can joke around with, i'll do that vs a student who takes everything super seriously
Don't want to get into politics but this fantasy of "the free market can fix it" is baseless and broken. We have private for-profit colleges and they're the worst.
I love that my team meet is being threatened by the airlines. Weeee. Thanks Microsoft (I know it’s not their fault. But than again, yes it is)

On this, I disagree: my entry hires are all quite productive (or they don't last very long). We very quickly progress them to being responsible for something of importance.
Usually CS undergrads, and we're not hiring outliers.
Just wanted to share my experience, the rest of your points make sense to me.
You get it all with practice. So long as you care you do. Time management of material Vs questions Vs tangents. Student feedback telling you whether they're hearing or listening. Planning to do the right emphasis. It comes quite naturally.
Hi
Utilized R for advanced statistical analysis, including regression methods and ANOVA, to evaluate guest satisfaction surveys leading to actionable insights that enhanced online reviews by 10%.
Is this better?
Okay 😄
Utilized R for statistical methods such as multiple regression and ANOVA to evaluate guest satisfaction surveys. This comprehensive analysis involved data cleaning, hypothesis testing, and model validation, leading to actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%.
remove comprehensive I guess
Applied multiple regression and ANOVA using R to analyze guest satisfaction surveys, involving data cleaning, hypothesis testing, and model validation which led to actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%.
or should I say applied statistical methods using R?
I used Tukey's Method
post hoc test
thats what it is called as well 😄
No first you run ANOVA and then you run Tukey's HSD to find out which specific group means, when compared with each other, are different.
I don't think micro optimizations to this degree will make a difference in the grand scheme of things. They won't throw out your resume if a sentence was worded differently
Hey I just want to get started with python but I lack in consistency do u guys have any suggestions?
It's broscience, have you, or anyone for that matter, AB tested it? 😄
Applied multiple regression, ANOVA and Tukey's Test using R to analyze guest satisfaction surveys, involving data cleaning, hypothesis testing, and model validation. This led to actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%.
that's not an AB test, you'd have to send the same resume to the same place to prove causality
I'm saying this because @safe coral can probably chill out, the resume looks strong as it is. Just apply with it
Isnt it surprising I have no callbacks tho @brazen island
What are you applying to though
What have you been applying to?
Data Science and Data Analyst positions
The kind that you linked that ask for 9 years experience? No wonder youre not getting callbacks
- you know some statistics ye? Applications could be binomial distributed, fix p to different callback rates and you can see that it's not improbable (given how much you've applied)
Some of this is just chance, you could be unlucky. Your CV passes the eye test
No the ones I apply for 2 - 3 years @near ocean
Yeah I applied like 300 positions within the last week. No calls yet @brazen island
Applying sucks right now though. All but one of the things I applied for 2 months ago had no callbacks either. The only things that progressed were cases where I was headhunted or through referrals. You can't "force" the former, but you absolutely can aim for the latter
And it works. A close friend of mine is from Mexico, she contacted a friend of hers in the dominican republic to refer her to a position in Brussels, Belgium and she just signed the contract 🤷
Lucky
hardly
Well, it's arguably better than spam applying. You've done 3 data jobs, which means you've come into contact with many data professionals. Potentially subcontractors/vendors as well. Can any one of them vouch for you?
that's trivializing the effort it takes to make and maintain relationships with people to the point where you can ask for referrals
You also studied, you had classmates, they can refer you as well? I do it for friends all the time.
Unfortunateky no... I havent come close to anyone @brazen island My current position doesn't have any other people I work with
so what about networking events? conferences? meetups? your classmates?
I work by myself and the position was created just for me.
It's at Mariott, I can't imagine Mariott doesn't have other data analysts?
Marriott's are franchises
Im not working for corporate marriott. Im working in one of their hotels
saying that networking is luck is just... not true (in most cases. obviously if you're the son of a CEO that is different)
So we have like 10 people in the hotel and Im one of them @brazen island
They dont even pay me different. I make the same amount as a front desk person associate 😄
and I dont have access to corporate marriott job postings
It was 6 of us that graduated from data science. None of us got jobs yet @true harness
Only 6 people graduated?
The whole major had 6 students yeah

what about your current classmates
I dont get to talk to them much. Its online
so why not talk to them
Its different when you meet face to face
noone wants to talk to each other in these online classes
finding someone to vouch for you is less effort than sending out 300 more applications
I know
I met a nice guy who was referal for me for jobs on Amazon. I keep applying jobs on Amazon too
He refers me. I applied like 25 positions and no call backs. He was confused about it too as to why I never got a call back even with referal
so theres either something off with my resume or they dont like my name 😄
I mean I am running out of reasons lol... He couldnt figure out why either
Maybe I shall go to a court and change my name to an American name
Unlucky is a valid reason, or you still need more applications
to see if it helps
That sounds reasonable 🤨
you think every single company you applied to is rejecting you because of your name?
As someone with a distinctly foreign name (and look) all I can say is that I like to leave it in the middle if it is or isn't an issue because you can't help or change it
It is what it is, so it's something I think is healthy to spend the least amount of time possible worrying about
Unless you pick activisim as a career path or so, different story then (and props to you if you do!)
This is alarming tho @brazen island
Sure but what can I do about it?
One Asian applicant said she put her “very Chinese-sounding” name on her resume in her freshman year, but only got noticed after subbing in her American nickname later: “Before I changed it, I didn’t really get any interviews, but after that I got interviews,” she said.
I can change it I guess like people do on their resumes
Try it and see, i dont expect much change
(September 2004) - We study race in the labor market by sending fictitious resumes to help-wanted ads in Boston and Chicago newspapers. To manipulate perceived race, resumes are randomly assigned African-American- or White-sounding names. White names receive 50 percent more callbacks for interviews. Callbacks are also more responsive to resume q...
The watershed study found that applicants with names suggesting they were white got 50% more callbacks from employers than those whose names indicated they were Black. @near ocean This is troubling
we've already gone around the block at least once on this topic. I'd appreciate it if you put it to rest.
Why? It is the truth.
even if that is the case, there's no point discussing it repeatedly and flooding the channel with links to studies.
I get the same reaction at the hotel all the time
You don't look Turkish and your name is Turkish. There's a certain bias in this country
Turkish people are dark skinned. Do you know how many times I hear that everyday at work
if this is happening in your case, wouldn't you still expect some callbacks? you're insinuating that every single company is either implicitly or explicitly denying black people
That means I need to apply 600 jobs to get a call back instead of 200
It just occured to me: the AI director at my company is Turkish
Compared to White British applicants, people of:
Pakistani heritage had to make 70% more applications
Nigerian and South Asian heritage 80% more applications
Middle Eastern and north African heritage 90% more applications
and he was hired into that position a year and a half ago.
his name is also overtly Turkish
Tell him my struggle. maybe he will wanna interview me @peak halo
you can apply on the website.
does he have linkedin?
idk
😄
You know whats so funny. I applied to positions at the same time with my cybersecurity friends
We applied to same positions in 2023. They got positions and I didnt
I had a better GPA and we had the same experience.
you all had identical resumes?
No we didnt have experience
I don't want to sound dismissive but isn't this getting a bit off topic?
This is another repackaging of correlation != causation. You can only prove causality with an experiment (or with a couple of advanced methods). I know I'm really annoying about this, but it's truly a dangerous thing to do ime
Well Im not getting a callback and he wants to help me
I dont think theres anything wrong with that. Considering Ive been applying for jobs over 2 years now
they are just cautioning against confirmation bias
No need for that strawman, all I'm saying is that people all to often do something, measure anecdotal results and then proclaim it as a general rule.
yes, that's exactly the situation where you would want to be cautious
But on what are they based? You simply cannot discount the fact that you sent your resume at the right time at the right place and all previous iterations would have gone through
what, I didn't even say anything when you were helping earlier
The problem is I am running out of time. Im 36 year old guy. I definetely need to get a job within a year or two before I collapse in student loans @brazen island
I just don't want him to get into a loop of "something is wrong with me or my CV". I've seen @safe coral 's resume, it's fine. I'd give him a callback, sadly I'm not hiring nor in the right continent. Maybe all he needs is time (and a referral! 😉 )
Ive spent over a year and half @brazen island
what kinds of jobs are you applying to? perhaps you need to cast a wider net?
hey, does anybosy have aws exam vouchers ??? i want to give Solution's Architect exam.. but i don't have the funds to do so... can someone help me out ??
you can't ask for that here, sorry.
Im applying anything that is IT, Data Science and Data Analyst
most IT jobs I cant work for cuz they want all sorts of certifications.
Yeah. I applied many Data Science and Data Analyst positions
have you considered applying for general software development or data engineer jobs?
So I dont have any experience in SWE
I did apply for Data Engineering jobs
Whats the company you work for? @peak halo I can try to see if there are anything for me there
I don't want to discuss that here.
May I dm you then?
If you dont mind
I once remember a recruiter hung up on me at the beginning of our conversation because he thought I sounded like girl @turbid bobcat
I mean people call me m'am on the phone a lot (probably my accent) I was really insulted tho
they explicitly told you that they were hanging up because you sounded like a girl?
That's unfortunate, but I'm not sure how you want us to help you with that.
Yeah. I swear to god
Yeah. The guy was like wait are you a girl and I said no I was a boy and he hung up
Would you even want to work at a place like that?
I somehow dont believe you
I mean it was a Recruiter for Verizon
I am not lying. Why would I lie????? @near ocean crazy stuff happens
Especially since you said you were insulted, its not something to feel insulted
I would be insulted if someone hung up on me because of how I sound
Where are we going with this conversation?
Nowhere. Im just saying how horrible recruiters are haha
Im talking about careers here. I dont know why witch-hunting.
Ive been trying to get a job for the last two years and you guys say its nothing to worry about
that's not what we're saying. what I'm trying to say is that trying to micro-optimize your resume, and discuss discrimination in hiring, are not productive uses of this channel
Well whats the use of this channel then? This is a career channel
They send resumes here all the time.
Of course I will keep coming back here to ask for help about increasing my chances of getting hired
macro optimizing your resume and seeking actionable insight for how you can change your job hunting strategy
I've been applying to internships for 2 years now, I've never even gotten close to the level of interaction that you allege
Well I had 5 interviews
One dismissed me because of my age as I mentioned here (Comcast)
He thought I was in my 20s because I didnt add my college degree from Turkey to my resume
I can see that being an issue for some places yes, but there's strategies to circumvent that. One of my colleagues became a ML engineer at like 55
I don't put my degree from Turkey in my resume
Then it reveals that Im 36 which will even lower my chances of getting hired
Also Stelercus was like apply at my company online and then they don't wanna disclose that. Im confused on that :/
Thank you at least someoe here cares
Okay let me give you a piece of actionable advice @safe coral . The demand for ops people (devops, cloud engineering) and engineers (data engineers, software) is much higher than data scientists. I'm basing this on the headcount of the teams I've been in as well as that of my cohort. "Everyone" wants to do ML and typically they aren't the greatest at the ops and engineering side of things. If you want to work with data aiming for a data engineering role to get your foot through the door is a solid strategy
The problem is how am I gonna get experience in data engineering? I have no experience in data engineering
Yes and no, I think when hiring for data scientists you can feel comfortable to wait it out to get a unicorn, especially for junior roles because there's so many motivated people trying to get into it
what about getting experience in software development first and then moving from there
You need a college degree in CS for that @delicate swift

You guys are directing me to the areas I have no experience in
And don't you have one? It's literally in your resume iirc
in order to be an entry level software developer, you need to get a CS degree
Even if you are going on as a data analyst or data scientist having a strong foundation of data engineering is paramount
you're in a CS masters. you have pretty closely related BS. not having exactly a CS BS is irrelevant
and considering the fact that I failed Java so many times, may not be a good sign for me to do SWE
but my CS is in AI and ML focus. Im not taking any SWE courses
Java isn't the only programming language in the world dude
I failed Java and C++. Im good at Python
That sounds just fine. Mine has a data science focus, and I'm (hopefully) on track to land my first full-time job as a SWE
ok, don't apply to swe roles then
How? Do you know Java or C++? @delicate swift
A typical story that is echoed a lot in industry is companies staffing out a DS team that can only do analysis / models but none of the engineering to get the data in the right place eand do deployments. I think no matter what path you proceed in, you should look into getting that experience. Based on your resume that would be the questions I ask you:
- How did your data architecture look like?
- How did you do deployments? How does your solution integrate into your employer's workflow
SWE jobs require more of OOP languages. I looked into them
I know Java and Python - and Java's not really the only language in all of programming
In fact, I found that more jobs require Python more than anything lol.
Python is a very OOP language, everything is an object unlike Java which has primitives
Java is the one to bind them all
but do you have previous experience in SWE? @delicate swift
Cuz I have no previous SWE experience. I didnt do anything SWE related
anyway you should take this into account @safe coral
Just a single internship and volunteer work, that's all - and don't you literally have a whole field about working as an intern on some company?
as a data scientist not as an swe
If you're not receiving anything about your applications, then surely something must be wrong with your resume
so apply for entry level roles like everyone else with no experience
^
so my resume is the problem
Link your resume again, there's nothing wrong with it
Unless you're simply applying to the wrong things
No this is the last edit from an hour ago
There's no shot you're not receiving any answers at all if you're applying for the right roles
As a reader, this would bring some red flags in terms of experience
why? @smoky quest
The combination of education and experience. You have been a DS since 2019 but aren't senior by now. There is a bsc in the middle, etc.
This makes it look like someone who has greatly inflated their experience
I am not senior because the position is created just for me at the hotel @smoky quest
As a reader: why would I care?
Then what am I go say?
That was the issue I had with it as well, something about the timeline doesn't add up
I started as a front desk there and they said I should do something with my degree so they say you can do our data analyst
But I didn't want to mention it because I thought it went against the conventional wisdom of the room 😅
That's a tough question.
But think about it, you see a resume of someone who has been a DS for years and then has an internship last year? That's hell confusing.
Resumes are your ad and a component to it is the ability to tell your story
its because I didnt have a college degree? @smoky quest
No. It's because it's not logcial or consistent
be yourself
You have an internship before you started the degree, and then during the degree you start a role that isn't an internship that, from the way it's written, sounds like big business
No? My internship is in Dec 2022
That coupled with all the "improved process by X %" which is also part of the conventional wisdom, makes the entire thing seem inflated to me
I started my degree in 2018...
Oh, the associate thing that's what I meant
Make sure to update your linked in so recruiters can approach you instead of you them as well
But then I'd wonder what happened between 16 and 18
It might be worth adding a blurb in your Mariott job about how you started as a night manager but have grown into a DS as you worked on your degree
Recruiters on LinkedIn are relentless 😔
Thats not gonna be a long stuff to mention tho
They wont read my front desk associate position role there
content-wise it looks fine except for me this liking this but the timeline looks a bit off
so basically I cant have a job while in college
people get hired during college all the time...
I started working there in 2017 as a front desk associate and in 2019 started doing data analyst stuff
so add front desk associate position there?
I wasnt full time there tho
Was the role full time?
I was part time during college. Now Im full time
how am I gonna put that to the resume?
and my internship was online only
Part Time to Full Time?
Can I be frank? I feel like you're overselling something but my reasoning is that the companies would actually only notice in the interview if/when they ask for clarifications
But imo you should still get callbacks with how it is right now
But imo it's definitely a good idea to be more upfront otherwise when the callbacks do start coming you'll be in trouble at that stage
I removed my job at the Reimbursement Technologies Inc
I'm not making hiring decisions yet, aside from interns, but a lot of clarifications from the CV when we talk about it would be a no from me
much better
now for the overselling stuff. What should I do?
To me "Marriott international" looks like you're working for corporate
they are
Maybe it's because I'm not in the hotel industry but if I interview with someone and they have "Marriott international" my expectation is that they're doing it on a group level or so
what should I put there?
Was your job title for Marriott Internation Data Science since you joined? Or were you promoted from front desk to Data Scientist later on?
"Marriott International, <city-name> branch"
I was Front Desk and now I do Data Science
though I still get paid the same
😄 because the position was there just for me
Were you promoted to Data Scientist in 2019 as the job title shows, or only later on?
Something you can do is trim unnecessary stuff. Like under developer tools listing the IDEs you use
"Marriott International" does have some corporate ring to it but tbh if that's the name that is on your paychecks, I don't know if there's a better way to handle it.
You said you don't like Java? Maybe also remove that too. You don't need to put everything on there, less is more 😄 since you have more space you can also increase the spacing between parts
It's like how if you say "data scientist @ walmart" I'm expecting that you're doing it for the group at corporate and not for 1 store
putting it as the first language when you said you failed a bunch of Java courses is amusing. at least put it last or something
@lusty current
For reference, my CV. I know more languages than I list on here. It's totally irrelevant to list them imo
I know Java and some C++. Also know and have written a lot of R. I'm also SAS certified (🤢 ). Buys me nothing so I don't write it
imagine being an intern at crowdstrike rn
Would be quite fun
there's a difference between doing data science for McDonald's and doing data science for the 4th Street McDonald's in Peoria. The question is whether the resume conveys a false impression by just saying Marriott International
somebody could get a false impression and feel misled by it. I think it's a matter on which reasonable people may disagree.
My standard is also "it only goes on my CV if I have proof/repos I know the skills" (unless I can't due to NDA reasons or whatever)
Scale, standards
He has no coworkers at that specific marriott whereas he would be part of a team at corporate
I didn't have R code share so it didn't make the cut (nor was it relevant for the jobs I was applying for)
but to reiterate the most important point I made, putting energy in getting referred >>>>> applying to many things. Unless you're relocating or so. At the end of the day the place that I'm moving to never saw my resume
Kinda hard to build relationships for referrals when you have no coworkers and refuse to speak to the couple of people you graduated with
Probably not
You should ask jigglypuff, he said his position did not exist and was created entirely for him
"I work at McDonalds"
Could be the one down the street, or the corporate headquarters
They would be vastly different jobs
I think that was a nice way of saying he doesn't want to try. For instance, he could reach out to the franchise owner and have him see if marriott corporate has jobs.
It’s not very difficult to network. Even with online school.
If I were corporate and a franchise owner tells me there's someone that knows the business, has a degree in data science and has been doing it on "our" scale I'd be jumping to hire them
Right, but this specifically came from the naming. If they care enough to look up the location they would then see it is a specific hotel, not a headquarters
Microsoft isn't a franchise.
Marriott International is a massive company with international reach, which mostly operates by franchise agreements. Your local Marriott-branded hotel is most likely a much smaller regional franchise, maybe even just the one hotel. It could be the difference between working for a company with hundreds of thousands of employees (most of which are engaged in sales, marketing, and other white collar jobs) and one with less than a hundred (many of which may be housekeeping, reception, etc.)
not that the social status of your coworkers should matter on a resume, but it just makes a difference to the implication of working there as a DS
A bit dishonest imho but its not the end of the world
But I think this whole discussion isn't really about the resume at this point. I think jiggly could be well served to network and make connections and apply to jobs after they are already known by the company / hiring manager / recruiter instead of blind applying. More of a targeted application method instead of applying wide
like I said, I think it's a matter on which reasonable people can disagree. I don't think it's particularly dishonest. (But some hiring managers might see it that way.)
He could reach out to fellow alumni, I actually reached out to grad career relations for my latest job.
As an example, sure
Not that they referred me or anything, but it felt good to have someone in my corner. A good guy.
I'm still in contact with multiple people that graduated with me. It keeps a lot of career options open and we regularly share with each other about job positions they can refer the other to if anyone is looking to make a jump. It's extremely useful
My Mariott hotel is owned by a different company and managed by a different company but they both report to Marriott International @white relic
What should I put for the company then?
@lusty current could u check your DMs pls
how many Mariott locations does your work encompass?
1
Okay, so it would be most honest to say that you work for that one hotel.
but I can't put that on LinkedIn
Your CV isnt linkedin
How much is an Ethernet cable in this context?
it doesn't show up under company name... You know people contact you on LinkedIn for jobs @near ocean
LOL
what can't you put on linkedin?
People arent contacting you jiggly, thats the problem
^ what mar said ^
I have two jobs on my linkedin that were at companies that don't have a linkedin page/account or whatever it's called in LinkedIn's context. It doesn't really matter
Youre applying to postings, at least be accurate on your cv
Were you promoted to Data Scientist in 2019 as the job title shows, or only later on? Only possible spot I can see that's possibly inflating if for example you only started doing DS work in 2022
Aha, I missed that
I removed that one.
Apparently its suspicious to work as a data analyst without a degree
huh
that's not what was said. they said the timeline was odd
You’d just have to clarify that with the background check vendor
plus I dont talk to anyone in that position anymore
like I dont even know if my boss works there and I dont have her number anymore
so I cant use her as a reference. That was like 8 years ago
and it was only a 8 month of experience
I will just expand my projects section
add more bulletpoints to them
my role didn’t even have experience written on it 🗿
when I see that I say fuck it we ball
- Employed MICE technique for handling missing data, ensuring the integrity and completeness of the dataset.
- Built various models using Decision Trees, Random Forests, RNN and XGBoost, achieving a 97% detection rate.
Do these look good for bullet points?
okay
you can put that in the description of the role
where? The Fairfield by Mariott?
Yup hahaha
As a reader who does not work for Mariott, that doesn't speak to me.
Mariott has so many sub brands and so it's not clear if your scope is the DS team for that subbrand or a single hotel or something else.
Then what am I gonna say there?
@lusty current
It says Fairfield by Marriott and location Bloomsburg
So you want me to enter my front desk position too?
Check DMs pls
thats not even related to jobs I apply to... Why would I enter that there
I wasnt a manager there. I worked at the front desk (I still do if they need me)
My recommendation would be to make your history and progression more clear as to not have your resume send weird vibes to recruiters.
One way to do so is to add a bullet to explain your role and progression. But whatever works for you
Why would my position send a weird vibe?
I xplained my role and position in the bulletpoints
• Conducted in-depth analysis of guest booking trends and developed an ARIMA model for room demand, which informed strategic pricing adjustments, leading to a $175K in revenue annually.
• Applied multiple regression, ANOVA and Tukey’s Test using R to analyze guest satisfaction surveys, involving hypothesis testing, and model validation which led to actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%.
• Centralized guest data from multiple sources such as CRM and PMS by designing a MySQL database leading to an increase in guest satisfaction by 5% and freeing up 10+ hours of staff time weekly.
• Built an RNN model to optimize group pricing strategies by analyzing historical group booking data and seasonality trends, resulting in 15% increase in group bookings and $125K increase in group revenue annually.
• Developed dynamic dashboards using Tableau and Python’s Dash and Plotly libraries to visualize key performance indicators, leading to a 20% improvement in decision-making efficiency for the management team.
?
It literally explains my role
Hi
See my comment from 2h ago
Im trying to get u unbanned
so you want me to remove this position too?
Oh dm me
and just put front desk associate? Since this position is under the hood?
your comment is ambigious. I dont know what you want me to do @smoky quest
Hey does anyone know how hard it would be to get a job as a software developer if I complete a course on python with no cs degree
The new bullet point for what? @turbid bobcat
trust me, if my POS resume can get callbacks his can.
Very difficult. If you need a job, but you can't pursue a CS-or-similar degree, you should probably look at other careers.
IT adjacent? maybe?
but he tells me my DS position sends weird vibes @turbid bobcat
what am I supposed to put there?
Front Desk Associate became Data Scientist? as a my job description?
add a note maybe in the resume? Note: I started this position in December 2017 as a front desk associate and promoted to data scientist position under the hood
cuz I started working there in 2017
because he thinks its weird that I dont mention that
here @turbid bobcat
i don't either
recursive_error — Today at 2:30 PM
My recommendation would be to make your history and progression more clear as to not have your resume send weird vibes to recruiters.
One way to do so is to add a bullet to explain your role and progression. @turbid bobcat
so should I add my front desk job as well?
or write a note about starting as a front desk person moving up to data science position?
I haven't been following the whole conversation but if this is the current state of your resume, I don't see value in adding a front desk position
What I did @turbid bobcat
Im so confused 😢
I mean @fringe sphinx hires I wonder what he thinks
I mean how many Fairfield by Marriott is in Bloomsburg
why is it so confusing for the recruiter????
He was also confused about the hotel tho
I work at Fairfield by Marriott in Bloomsburg
I mean my resume has the location too
Whatever at this point I dont care lol
yeah
remove the note
Don't need "part time" twice. I would probably cut it from the bold line.
Reframe and rephrase the note. The note has a connotation of downplaying your impact and growth.
And the "under the hood" makes it too sketchy.
Okay
So you want me to keep the note?
I would make it a bullet and frame it more positively.
Remember the person reading your resume does not know you and does not know your context and progression
Something like that. But it could also be as simple as stating that you were able to grow your role and apply the learning from your school into your job and help improve the efficiency of your hotel. Anything that you feel comfortable phrasing and sharing and that make you look good and helps show your growth and passion.
Oh and I didn't notice you added the part time from your resume shared earlier. That helps too!
Note that show, don't tell. So HOW did you demonstrate exceptional analytical abilities and technical proficiency?
Massive nitpick so feel free to ignore this one: if you have all that stuff about hypothesis testing the interview may ask you about it and if you get it wrong, it's a dealbreaker. Unless you feel comfy answering very nuanced questions about it I'd leave it out. That's the case for me personally even after taking many stats classes
So if I ask you why you did both multiple linear regression, ANOVA and tukey's test you feel fine answering? Or what the difference between multiple linear regression and ANOVA is?
ANOVA is not used for regression it is to find the common mean between variables of different groups
The hackathon I won had a dude come at nr 3. He did most of his approach based on ARIMA, they asked him after his pitch "what does ARIMA stand for" and it was ggwp
I use regression to compare slopes and ANOVA for comparing means
Multiple linear regression and anova are the same if your variables are strictly categorical
