@craggy galleon please remove your question from either this channel or #data-science-and-ml, and direct people to whichever channel where you want to receive answers.
What are the best tracks in the market that i can specialise in ?
In ai field
I'm pretty confused... I'm good at ml and deep learning and nn and generative ai but I don't what work should i search for 😭
you probably don't know as much about those topics as you think you do. especially not generative AI. but there's a lot of interest in generative AI at the moment.
Where are you at in your journey? Are you a university student?
In general, it is common to apply to hundreds of jobs to get just a few interviews. Don't overthink which jobs you are targeting, just apply for everything you might have a reasonable shot at. In the process you will learn what niches exist in your local job market
Not that much knowledge ofc so I'm asking to enhance what are required for the career bath .
I made many GANS models and Gans is only fs part of genai
I'm confused should i keep going in track daya scientist or should i go for other better track
Fresh graduate
I dropped the main question of concern above 👀
I may serve in military and afterwards my plan to travel abroad so I'm just asking to prepare and know how is the market
A career bath sounds refreshing ngl
I guess that a strength point when the ask for jobs in genai is more than Data science especially through my plan to work abroad.
Honestly, military doesnt sound bad. Air force would probably you a heft sum to join. Plus who doesn't like people that severed , and with your skill yet, now and what you learn in the field sounds awesome. It's hard to see where AI will be, but I think its safe to say it's a something like healthcare, its never going to go away, just grow.
My best advice is do what you want, and dont second guess it.
What country?
Egypt.😂
And here I am assuming.
Its obvious you're highly skilled does the military offer training? Hows that work?
It's like a waste of time being in military or in Egypt yk
If they took me in military one year I'll spend it taking courses in holidays preparing for the next step after the military duration
Ahhh! I understand.
Hey for anyone who’s actually a software engineer right now. So, do you guys ever have free time? Or is it always just work, work, work and calls or wake up in the middle of the night to fix a major bug.
it's like any job
If there's a major bug every night, something is very wrong with the organization
**Anyone Here Working in Google ? or they have any connections in google ? **
it is possible there are such people here. why do you ask?
actually there has been an opening there for SDE role 2025 passout and i am also passing out in 2025 so just for that i need help how can i get in there.
Please Help me friends
- Prepare your resume
- Work on projects
- Prepare for interviews
i already have done that brother can is share my resuem here
then you are done
i was thinking for refferal brother also i got refferal previous time but i got rejection but this time i improved my experience section and achievments also.
usually people dont like to share their phone numbers with 400k other people.......
ok am resending
please mates give some review on this is this enough to get a SDE role in google ?
@pine sleet @smoky quest if you know then can you help about that google thing.
what other language other than py should i learn b4 getting a job?
I need a job in python
Ok I will do that and now about the things that :-
Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
Experience working with Unix/Linux, Windows or macOS environments, distributed systems, machine learning, information retrieval, and TCP/IP
Experience programming in C, C++, Java, or Python
Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering```
this is the JD of the google as of now. so the content is my resuem is good ?
or shall i add networking project? like its asking for TCP/IP thing ? one of the guy told me
Then you should apply for jobs
hello everyone,I'm a computer science student and I'm almost graduated. I've started sending applications for AI/ML roles because that is my desired job, but I can't find a position in the field. Any suggestions?
Are you getting any interviews at all? If not, your resume may need work. Feel free to share an anonymized screenshot here for feedback.
Otherwise it's all about networking to find the opportunities fewer people know about and aren't applying to be by the thousands
Guys, I am from India . Currently in std 9 . I am valedictorian almost every year, know C++, python, Java, HTML, CSS and js. I am also interested in Maths, Physics and stuff like that..
Can anyone suggest how can I start my prep for jee ?
this is my resume
try going for coaching if u aim cracking it
Hey its time for me to rejoin my college after the 1year break i took bcz of a accident.. but in that 1year i actually learned to code. i am supposed to join with my junior batch. i am confused should i rejoin college (2nd year) or maybe learn more build projects and look for a job without degree.
Finish the degree. It'll open up more doors, build your personal network, and get you on a career path. It's exceptionally hard to land a SWE interview without one.
(And it's not just about learning programming)
i thought of like going for a online one for bachelors in cs and continue with my programming, learning and projects.. so its hard to find a job without a actual degree 😦
nvm ill rejoin thats the best thing ig
In hindsight I should've done better on the salary expectation question. I'm never answering the question again, period. I'll say something that deflects from actually answering it
Paradoxically, my new net take home will be higher than the gross (even though I'd still say I got lowballed a bit)
Yah, there's never a good answer to that q
If they don't publicly state the budgeted range for the position I try to ask them for it as early as possible. Then if they ask about my expectations I can simply say either that their range is acceptable, or that I expect to be on the higher end of it
I think my issue is that salary ranges only tell half of the story because I moved down 1/4th in gross but I'm jumping 1/3rd in net because the package is better. That's the main reason why I don't like the question I think
I drop the university in a course of engineering and now I'm thinking in come back because all jobs requires a graduation, I used Python and R (have little) and I would like to work with programming even not being the central part of the course
How does this work? Can you explain?
The new package is optimized towards providing the absolute max on tax-free incentives while keeping the gross modest
this might be a stupid question but if I want to have a published paper, does it have to be a new discovery and is it possible for an undergrad to have one? I wanna make my resume stand out by having publications
I published as an undergrad. but you'd need to find a professor who's willing to work with you.
Oh I see
I graduated recently from CS but to get an entry is hard for me even with all my skill set
I wonder how others make it happen because I'm confuse right now
You're applying for internships? But not getting any interviews? Have you had much resume feedback?
Ah, nevermind about internships,.you already graduated
how many positions have you applied to, and how many callbacks have you gotten?
Then how do I make it happen
About 50 - 100 mainly Software Engineer and django
you should probably pay closer attention to how many applications you're putting out, and where. I recommend using a spreadsheet.
About 3 out of it
okay, and how long have you been searching?
For about 6 - 8 months now
What do I need to do?
if you've been searching for 8 months, you should have done more than 100 applications. what market are you looking in (like what country, or region within a large country)?
I use LinkedIn and wellfound. Mainly remote jobs from US, UK and Canada...I'm from Nigeria
I see. that's definitely a much different game than job hunting as a resident/citizen of those countries. maybe someone with experience in that area can help.
Are you saying is based on residence?
I just don't know what the considerations are when companies hire remote workers in different countries. My company only hires US citizens who can go to the office.
Then this is your problem. Focus on local opportunities. After you gain some experience maybe you'll have a shot at those.
This article explains that, among other things: https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/advice-for-junior-software-engineers/
Alright. I appreciate 🙏
Alright; so what do ya'll think? Any suggestions // changes?
I have no idea what to really do for the skill section. This is for my "general" resume that is just being given to a few people. IE, I can't specialize it for the position. But I want the main focus of the advice to be on the rest of it. (but I will take whatever you give; thank you!)
Ok fine, let me narrow it down;
Any ideas on what I should put down for the "skills" section? Don't have a lot of space and not sure how to organize it in a meaningful way
Hey everyone 👋
I've been learning python for a while now and I'm quite familiar with the language. I've had some exams so I stopped for a while so I can focus on schoolwork. My exams are finished so I'm planning on resuming my learning. I've made some projects generally like a website with flask and some GUİ's with tkinter. I was thinking about finding a niche, so I can make more projects, related to that niche. I think that way it will be better. So what's the niche I should focus on right now. Any ideas? I'm looking for something I can put my mind into and maybe start a career from there.
right now you should focus on discovering and exploring niches, not specializing it in one.
And in terms of a career, a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
I have an option of going into Business or Computer Science. I have 8 close friends, and 4 of them are going into CS, is the market a little bit oversaturated right now? 3 of my friends' reasons for going into CS is: 💰
How is
Technical Skills:
• Programming Languages: Python, Rust, TypeScript, SQL (Postgres), C++
• Frameworks/Tools: Django, AWS, Docker, FastAPI, React, GitHub, Linear, Discord
• System Architecture: Server Management, System Design, Troubleshooting
i just got my cpec on Python Institute, i'm looking at the data anylyst class on freecodecamp, good time investement ?
- since you graduated last year, keep your education on top
- your descriptions don't demonstrate the depth of your skills. For instance you mentioned your stuff was "scalable", but never talk about how or why it was scalable.
In terms of behavioral, I would suggest to prepare yourself for questions related to motivation
sure. I would think of it as like a word cloud to give a sense of your shape and interests
I'm currently pursuing a software engineering degree. I just finished my 2nd semester. And we haven't really done much so far. Just some python and OOP practices
Nice!
Yeah, that's how it starts
That is definitely something I am unsure about. My shape, direction, and interests. I kinda have just been doing what comes. I mean, I 100% don't want to do frontend stuff (despite that being in there too lol)
But yea; I just feel a little lost right now. (That is fine btw, I don't mind it and know that it is very normal)
then spend some time figuring out your interests 🙂
The types of roles are pretty much infinite
Not sure how I would go about improving on this. I do get what you mean, but the issue is that I have zero insight into what matters here. ...
try to frame it as wanting to geek about some of the cool stuff
I have ideas. But ,,, I don't have the time right now to explore them in more depth right now. I need to get a job now.
I want to do dev tooling and the likes. But am fine with backend. But I have no work experience in dev tooling, so a little harder to get in that. But I will apply
So I was thinking about just learning things on the side or gaining more knowledge, aside from what I'm being taught at college, because they can't really teach me everything, that's why I wanted to know some niches
Yes and that's quite normal.
So make projects and discover niches
guys, I need a advice,
I'm currently in low code development,
but before that in college I was into MERN stack development,
now I am thinking to up my skills learning Ml and build end to end apps/solutions,
please guide me how should I pursue this.
Make projects and try to steer your low code job towards more code
I find that hard to do these days. I get punished for geeking out. No one to geek out to and every time I do with people around me, I am met with apathy.
Idk, might just send as is (to the few people I was talking to)
Idk that i want to keep rolling over it forever. I should start getting it out there.
Unless there is something really wrong with it. If there is something really bad, I can make changes
I understand but could you please direct me in any particular direction for the same,
like where should I start my ML learning
find better people to geek with
If you want to learn about a specific topic, you could look at the resources tagged in the relevant channel. See for instance #data-science-and-ml for stuff related to AI/ML
Part of why I really need to get a job. One that is in an office. I am stuck right now where I live with no one to geek out to. And other things.
to be more specific I would be learning it kinda from scratch
Get a job as opposed to continuing to do what i have been doing (contract work)
Sure.
But it's like if I try to sell you a car and I tell you it's super gas efficient. And then you ask me how efficient and I answer that it efficiently uses gas.
That's part of show, don't tell.
You don't think superman is strong because he keeps yelling it. You think superman is strong because you see him lifting cars.
That's the same thing here for all your claims. Claiming to build something scalable is meaningless. Claiming to have done 1800x speedup is great but doesn't tell me what was done.
the resources in the channel are made for everyone.
Note also that in terms of career, a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
I already have a job due to my CS degree,
now I'm just upskilling myself
nice!
I do get what you are saying. In that case, I automated a fully manual process. And the number is based on how long it takes the automated system to do the same amount of work.
For the scalable scanning pipeline, there are a lot of things going on that make it "scalable". From the parallel workflow, to the automated scheduling and response of jobs. Meaning you could throw any number of documents at it, and it just handles it. No fuss.
That becomes a talking point becuase the original architecture that I took over was ,,, well very manual somehow. And very limited in what it could do. You would even have to break down large jobs into smaller ones.
But I don't know how to condense all of that into a bullet point. And in a way that actually is meaningful. Because "what did you do" is (to my understanding) more important than "how does it work"
these are all things worth talking about
Sometimes, it's better to cover less bullet points, but cover them better
I was thinking about delving into İoT. Do you have any resources on it?
IoT is a sector, like finance or healthcare. It's not a role.
As such, there are at least two ways to slice that cake:
- Information about the sector. Read market news, products, etc. about that topic
- Skills related to one or more jobs related to that sector. Dive into it. So for instance, if you want to learn about ML related to IoT, you could look at the ML resources in #data-science-and-ml
Thanks so much.
So I was wondering, what's the difference between a data analyst, data engineer and data scientist 🤔
It's the type of question worth googling first as there are people who have spent far more time crafting entire blog posts about it and as such, can provide a far more clear and precise answer than I could do in the 20s I write messages.
See for instance the top result for what's the difference between a data analyst, data engineer and data scientist in duckduckgo: https://www.dataquest.io/blog/data-analyst-data-scientist-data-engineer/
Am I cooked working towards my data science degree if I want to be a software engineer?
It's like a distance function. The further away, the more costly.
My gpa is not good enough to transfer over… I don’t know what to do, any advice? I’m going into my second year
it doesn't mean you can't become a swe, it just means it is more difficult than if you were doing a degree that targets it. The bright news, is it will be easier than if you were doing an accounting degree.
And regardless, you need to bring up that GPA.
And work on projects to demonstrate your swe skills.
are we to understand that you wanted to be a data scientist, and no longer want to be one? did something about the program change your mind?
in many cases, "data scientists" are just glorified SWEs.
Hello guys im here , a 17 yo kid very very confused about my future, this day the next year i Will have a diploma in IT , i did some SQL, VB, Will do the last year (from September tò June)HTML, CYBERSECURITY, i Need help in choosing what should i do next? Wich uni course should i go? Or i should start from now learning like python and otger things?
I have this courses, wich Is the best? I mean salary and what Will help me find a work?
Im like a kid thrown in a world of work , the real world...im very very confused and stressed about my future..maybe i shouldnt stress but idk how...
These don't look like Uni programs?
They are courses i think? If you know uni courses tell me plz , im from Italy btwn
Like what field should i learn
What's the link to this program?
Wait i send
Ok, and what are your degree choices?
Im kinda confused
Idk wich to choose
If you're interested in programming / software engineering then a degree in computer science is the normal choice
Hi Nnadi, nwanne kedụ?
About your job hunt, you might wanna priortize getting an internship experience from a Nigerian company first...
If you're in Lagos, I'll highlt recommend you attend PyCon Nigeria (the tickets are currently on sale)
This will be give you the opportunity to meet and connect with many people who could potentially help land your first internship.
You can check their twitter handle for more info https://twitter.com/PythonNigeria
The Python Software community aims to promote the use of the Language in Nigeria
That include like web programming?
Most cs degrees don’t inherently include web dev
Oh wich One does include It?
Usually theoretical cs and software dev along with speciality electives
If i did basics VB and SQL and HTML what can i do with that?
Not much if you don’t know a programming language besides VB
Is It good if i learn python or i should learn other language?
Python is a good first language yes

Oh i didn't know. Sorry guys
You accepted the #rules when you joined the server and are responsible for knowing all of them.
Yeah, my bad. It won't happen again
Nwanne mmadu. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot 🙏. Currently, I'm in Asaba. Are you on Twitter? We can connect
Sorry, I didn't tag you.
Yes. Send me a DM here let's discuss further
Alright 👍
Unfortunately, there's not enough tech job especially for new entry level roles in East let alone Asaba.
Are you still in school?
Wassup people
,need a recommendation where can I find a good mentor? maybe servers ot sites?
there are quite a few websites dedicated to it, especially if you are a minority.
Your company may also help facilitate it
😆yep, company. Nuh I started like 4 month ago. what websites for minority? I don't know what you mean.
Like if you are a woman in tech, there are groups focused on that
oh, I see. that's great for them 👍
Once you become confident in the basics of the language, and you've experimented with simple projects where you've applied libraries such as Tkinter to create GUI's and familiarised yourself with the uses of classes then you can start considering implementing frameworks to further extend your technical skills and expand your portfolio.
When you intend to do so I recommend starting with Flask before you move on to Django. Learn the basics of HTML and CSS, this can be done via an online YouTube course.
Run these on visual studio code, save the files within the same folder.
By doing this, you'll get to learn more about the front end of development while figuring out if you prefer the back end more.
For US jobs; any advice for places to go looking for jobs? I mean, I know big companies. But there are more options than just big companies.
Ideally a way to look into options from companies that don't have a really bad reputation.
I have heard a few people say that startups (or startup like) companies would be a good fit for me. (I have also heard the exact opposite too - not the point of Q) But where do I even go about finding job openings for startups?
I've been applying for 10-20 job listings a day, i am based in Europe, this job listings are mainly Python/SQL/Web framework or Python/Networking.
Currently i had 0 interviews.
I've been working with python for around 4 years now, mainly network based and most recently (1.5y) Django and SQL.
One of the issues is that i have no personal projects, i only have work projects that range from scripts, to GUI Tools and now a web app that automates network configurations.
Is the personal projects one of the main issues here? or could it be more on the CV side?
Personal projects are not in of themselves the thing that is valuable. The experience itself is. And they let you really dig into something that interestes you; meaning you can talk about it way better in an interview. But that is on the interview side of things. If you are not even getting any interviews, yea, I would guess it is more related to your CV. You can send it over and people will have a look if you want
Alright, i will the version i am currently using.
I was using a "American version" where i had no picture and there is less "pretty stuff" so to speak.
But i talked with some friends that recommended changing to this format to appeal more to the European market.
Welp... I don't know the european market. But yea, to my American brain, I hate this format. And I also know that it is harder for the bots to read columns. But maybe this really is the standard over there. (anyways, I go read now)
Search for ats checker on Google and know ur cv score.
Guys, can i get a work contract from us market then i can to travel to us ?
Or in Europe
Yea. Regardless of format, this CV needs work. I don't actually know anything about what you are capable of.
What is up with the academic stuff? Is it normal to mention what classes you did?
Your skill section should be hard + soft skills (although I don't personally add soft skills to mine). But yours is only soft skills. You do have a tech used part. But you can put them together.
Your "achievements" might be real achievements. But the way you wrote it, I have no reason to belive that. IE, I don't actually know what you achieved. You basically wrote that you an automation project that did automation. And that you know a little bit of linux.
In your projects section; how did you do anything? Saying what you did is fine. But it should definitely not be the only thing you say.
Same for your work stuff. I don't in any way really get a sense of who you are.
I see, i am taking notes, will redo it
It would be really hard. Not impossible. But close to it. Immigration for a job is hard. You have to give the company a really strong reason to want to hire you.
But I mean, yea, in theory you could.
#career-advice message. This is my most recent resume. It isn't "perfect". You don't have to copy it. And I am sure I will make tweaks to it. But if you want an example ...
Also always remember with this stuff: there is no right answer and everyone has different opinions on what is correct. So if you strong disagree with something; yea that might be. I mean maybe not. But maybe
Many thanks, so apparently the CV is a big issue... i feel bad for wasting so many oportunities ahah
Did all companies "ghost" you? Did you at least get any useful feedback?
E
They just sent the usual stuff "we didn't found you suited for this job" or that they did not proceeded with my application. Generic replies.
One of the companies actually said that i had profile for another listing, but that is all
Job openings for startups: crunchbase or pehub.com (not just pe)
Regardless of format: your resume has grammatical mistakes. Those will stop your resume from getting serious consideration.
Can I get a template of this for my resume?
hi can someone help me with this?
someone probably could after reading #❓|how-to-get-help
what'
someone probably could after reading #❓|how-to-get-help
blud u dont have to repeat yourself twice lol
It sounds like it helped bro lol
how does that even help
it tells you how to get help for your question
Is FLASK a usefull tool to know?
Is it still used in "the industry"?
And: What are everyones thoughts on web development + AI "stealing" jobs?
Oho oki tysm
Oh ok tysm
Can someone please provide the material or links or something to learn LLD ( low level design) for the interview?
Is this too much text?
The most relevant part of your CV, your experience, is last on the page and ordered the wrong way
Most recent should be on top and the entire section should be near the top
Should it be placed first on the right column?
is most people taking software field only for the money?
should be common enough for professional people also mostly going for fun. That makes the job every day as nice enough day.
People who don't like software can be living every day hell and having no sufficient motivation to progress further
Eventually software developers can become just crazy and embracing software development as part of their life. Because... well, why not.
That makes rapid progress in its skills, ensuring reaching a true level of progress and enjoyment
That ensures certain sacrifices though in person's lifestyle... for this reason software devs are more common to be among socially more awkward people a bit. Because they are socially awkward => they have more time and energy to become good, and experiencing no psychological issues to spend all the time towards it ^_^
managing life with both Software Development career, skills growth, and smth else beyond that... that is a true challenge.
yeah make sense. in my uni more than half of cs students dont have the like passion to it. they are just taking this degree bcz it pays well
in my university only smth like 50% of CS graduates work by their speciality ^_^.
And add to that, not each one among the remaining, will reach the steady level of career and going beyond junior level in addition
Some portion of students dropped CS degree, because they just paid for homework done by others. If u don't put effort and obtain your own skills => well, what's the point to study
^ and: it's unfair to judge a Uni student for not having passion. A lot of motivation from working and doing things that matter, not just schoolwork and side projects.
yeah
agreed. I dislike strongly CS program for its fifty shades of math 😄 Still made software dev career anyway, and enjoying building stuff i do for work and in pet projects.
we have to study physics mechanics chemistry graphics . its more like engineering
Yah, so don't judge your fellow students too harshly. Some of them are just holding on trying to pass most of their classes
yeah everyone is differnt
Sure, but if you already know FastAPI then I wouldn't bother.
yep
It's a factor but not entirely, remaining a software engineer/developer and even making any significant income requires you to hone the technical skills you already have, while keeping up with what's in demand for the ever-changing market.
If you don't have somewhat of a passion for it, you're more than likely to fall behind since it requires consistent learning long term.
I have come across different kinds of software engineers/developers in regards to personalities and general sociability. On the surface, the job in itself can appear to be isolating, however with an effective manager and competent colleagues with varying levels of experience, communication proves to be an essential foundation in the progression towards completion of given projects
Due to the nature of the field, hybrid and remote work is often optional providing the means for one to seclude themself, which for a lot of people, contribute to their work productivity and efficiency.
Yet, despite this, the SDLC requires regular meetings, group planning, discussion and feedback on code.
Can someone please provide the material or links to learn LLD ( low level design) for the interview?
mr.akashamad
It's my instagram account send message me on it
if you want to contribute , do it in server
dont promote your own social media
I am intermediate level c++ and learning to become expert level in python. I’m currently in school for electrical engineering is this enough to pursue a career in AI and robotics or do I need to go to graduate school ?
But I like conversation in ig
this is a discord server where everyone can chat , contribute here or dont
advertising your own social media is not allowed here
I'm not advertising but okay if you want
hello some one hlep me to create csv file in python
hello there i am unable to create the csv file it doesn't appear in exploer menu and file directory too but code runs smoothly
I get it dude
Is there any gui editor in python
I'm tired of watching yt tutorials bc I'm new to python and don't really want to code for gui
You're in the career channel, maybe try #python-discussion or #editors-ides
Ok
Me doing linear
it has some real usability ^_^ in case of computer graphics. yay.
Multiplying matrixes in a right away, can make nice visuals
Hurts my head
But if I make games, I'll just use ue5. I'll never touch making my own engine
insane 👏
matricies are hard for me to understand
like i get them and how the work, but it is hard for me to actually apply them in practice
Sounds smth like if u use SQL ORMs, you don't have to know raw SQL (in reality u need to know raw SQL in order to understand how to use SQL ORMs without fubar)
Also... it is always nice to have an option of implementing a thing u wish anywhere, without dependency on particular tool set. For example just drawing in canvas or smth
SQL is easy though
But reinventing everything is not good. That's what I meant, so I wouldn't use linear in a career unless I enter one which utilizes it
Such as working with graphics stuff
i cant wait until i can take a lin alg class. where in the mathematics progression does it usually fall? next year im taking calc3, diff eqs, discrete math, and stats all dual credit through my local community college as a senior in hs. will i be able to take lin alg as a freshman in college?
damn. i wish my hs offered lin alg as one of the dual credit classes so i could take it with calc
Does anyone have any recommendations for someone that is just getting started
I m new too
Don't stop?
What kind of recommendations are you looking for exactly? And what are you getting started in?
do whatever it takes to always be working on something you enjoy
You're taking four dual enrollment maths? Wow.
Yeah, they are all 1 sem classes, so it’s pretty much like taking 2 classes
You better be math minoring.
Im prolly gonna dual major in physics and math
Yah, I know, still, you're done with math for most engineering majors
Damn
But, on plus side, you can finally take real math classes, and be done with the intro college math stuff
general question but what are the factors you consider before picking a career path
fr
Okay so because I'm kinda new to everything, and I need to learn like a totally new language. I know that commitment is important, but I would like to know what helped you or could help me to make the journey more approachable, because learning about the strings, variables and more are a bit overwhelming
Well for a job in general...
- do i have the skillset for this job?
- if not, what do i need to do to obtain the skillset?
- how much does it pay?
- benefits?
- location?
- am I even at all interested in the work?
i think there's a difference between a career path and a major. Picking a major does not mean a career 'path', it means opening certain doors.
get a little experience in as many things as you can as early as possible and see what you enjoy and what you dont enjoy
Biggest thing that helped me was time and practice. Also having a degree...
still considering a major right now but in general im interested in using technology to advance scientific research
What kind of research? anything interest you in particular?
biological research, so like 3d imaging from machine scans, prediction models for diseases, overall using CS/DS concepts to help solve biological issues
I just learned about a new degree from my alma mater called Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering
https://www.mines.edu/academics/program/bachelors-quantitative-biosciences-and-engineering/
Might want to find something like that
Maybe look into bio med engineering, too.
right now im doing BME but might switch to ds, I think that foundation will be overall more applicable to a wider range of scenarios if I decide not to pursue biology
pyqt5 has a visual designer
IMO, becoming a strong coder is an important foundational skill that is applicable across the sciences.
When i use Luna grabber it wont let me setup it do anything with the links
If i click setup it goes in Python but DOESN'T put all the stuff in it can someone help?
@fringe sphinx can u help?
I don't dm
If you need help, open a help thread plz.
And, if Luna grabber is something malicious, see our #rules.
I am here billy
@vapid jay it's hard to get a job.
yes, I am green to it yet
I know that the hardest is to start but after getting the first the doors are open
did you get any feedback from people that turned you down?
'sorry but we decided to go with another candidate that was a better match'
sometimes you can get more details
the email looks ctrl c ctrl v sometimes lolol
Feel free to post an anonymized version of your resume
anyone use git or github?
@vapid jay did you get interviews? How do you think they went?
I got one for go role
how do y'all share code?
github
github is very common, but that's not a career topic. try the main channel.
how was the interview?
which main channel?
do you put an 'about me' session?
No
Hey does anybody who knows how to fix a discord python bot error dm me
it depends
I thought it was great, but the interviewer said that they didnt had projects for brazil at this moment and they would keep in touch with me
it was an international consultancy
you can't control things like geography
yes
I think the best way to get a job right now is either asking your buddies for a referral or reaching out to recruiters themselves. It’s just really hard right now since everyone wants to jump in on the hype train.
I think I am going to try a less hyped language like C# or PHP, Idk if javascript market is good, because it looks so saturated
When did u start looking for job? Lisan Al Gahib
I’m guessing u had an internship through COOP?
how much you know
That’s really lucky, normally that never happens. Where do u live?
have you made any big project to portfolio? like an ecommerce or... idk
what did u build
i'm not sure why you think a different language will be a better job experience.
I guess the saturation of the market in certain techs
isn't Python in high demand?
I would spam all the roles you want to target, regardless of their popularity or language
looks like you are in a more specific area
It is.
cool
I got a software engineering from boeing following me in github, that's an achievement at least

password management, I used encryptation, sqlite3 and cli menu
using salt and key derivation function, it was cool at that time
after that I made some api's and websites
Have you shared your resume (anonymized)?
i do yeah
Normally you’ll want just 1 page but if it works it works I guess
"verbose" means "using more words than necessary"
yeah not reading that book
it is dense, to be fair
If it works it works
I would advise against optimizing for people who would read it
It reminds me of the if you can't handle me at my worst meme
U should consider putting it all on 1 page though. If a person with 10 years of experience can put it on 1 page, you can too. Something I read online on TikTok
"if you can't read my terrible long paragraphs, you don't deserve my skills"
yeah, because that's the segment of job interviewers you are isolating yourself from.
What is judged here is the resume, not what you specifically did
Had you made a 10 pages long resume, it would still be terrible, regardless of the content
To be super explicit, people not reading your resume is not a failure on them, but a failure in the candidate in communicating their value
not writing paragraphs like books that no one would read. That would be a good start
you just need to think about it from the other side. if you have 1500 other resumes to get through, are you gonna spend 5 minutes reading this resume? of course not, because chances are there's an equally good (or better) candidate with a nicer to read resume in the rest of the pile
holy fuck 5 interviews combined both this week and next, i'm gonna be drained
even a terrible resume can get a job; it's about the likelihood 😛
why would you put it there if it's not going to be read
it's like stating "anyone can get a job"
it's not 2 minutes, it's 45 seconds. but that's besides the point; a resume shouldn't need planning to read. it should ~flow~
you can read far more than a header in 30-45s.
Writing books also convey below average communication skills
sure, they are looking to hire. but there are 1500 other candidates that are conforming. why should they pay particular attention to you?
this is exactly how you end up with "we have found a better fit"
It's like trying to argue for using camel case in python because you want to and you are ok not working with anyone else, despite everyone else not using that convention
again, it's not really about whether it's possible, but whether it's better than a differently formatted resume
You don't need to ping me for immature reactions.
I have no doubt you can find a job. I do have doubts you can find the same kind of jobs I am talking about
indeed. That's standard practices
Going fast includes being able to communicate effectively. That is a common problem for verbose people in interviews or promotions
you haven't demonstrated a growth mindset. So I am not going to repeat myself.
You got advice and you can decide to follow or ignore
can someone send me the discord.py server please
For a screen: I skim the first bullets of each experience, and check education. Then I decide whether to read or not
Whats the best language to learn for mobile app development? Don't have apple so smth other than swift. From research it seems like Kotlin or Dart - which ones better?
Yah, that is definitely a lot. Good luck!
you just need to start with something. You can always pick up the other based on the job(s)
it definitely is quite a bit
what do you guys think is a marketable language to learn for linkedin/jobs in data engineering or data sci?
python
python
anyone know r code or SAS?
some people do
had to learn r for a statistics class, was not a fan
In terms of career, a degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation. Especially for data related jobs
ok thanks!
what languages do y'all know?
what are y'all interested in? SW dev or SW eng or ML?
I stopped counting.
Most people will see too many languages to track. Just from school, you will most likely see a few
The ones I regularly use are python, rust and typescript. But I have learnt at lot more at some point or another
Any one do ML? Like NLP?
Using python or c++? Postgrel sql? Or just coding no datasets
React js for game app creation?
Hackathons at schools or online?
you are bound to find all sorts of people here
Apply to every job you might want regardless of whether you meet the posted requirements
...about?
a lot of internships these days will ask for stupid levels of experience
practice the coding tool they are going to use.
Are they like do the hello world thing
depends on the job
For sure
talk through the entire thing, explain what you are thinking. ask them questions to be sure you're going down the right path.
- Prepare your resume and get it reviewed
- Practice leetcode type interview, especially for coding jobs
- Practice SQL type interviews, especially for data related jobs
- Practice behavioral interviews with friends
leetcode/codewars/etc cover the dsa stuff, chatGPT can actually be a decent mock interviewer as long as you don't trust its feedback on your solutions
idk what they ask young-career people, but i''ve seen real-world coding exercises, not "reverse a red/black tree" or whatever.
another wall in the interview process can be the behavioral interview stuff, they will ask you questions about your previous work/school experience: when have you last had a disagreement with a teammate, how did you solve that, stuff like that. Those are good things to study and have premade answers to
What if I don't have good answers for those, I can't remember every disagreeing with a teammate really
make up something that sounds good
disagreement doesn't mean you get into a fight.
It can be a simple disagreement in terms of approach or technical decision
don't make up things that sounds good. That doesn't work that way and will hurt you more than it helps
I can't remember any specific such scenario
so you always had a mind meld with everyone in your life? You always were in agreement with every single thing?
it sure does work that way but agree to disagree
at least on the behavioral stuff, I'm not talking about lying on your CV or about your skills/work experience
that would be missing the point anyway
missing the interviewer's point, my point as an interviewee is to get hired
When working on projects, yes as far as I can remember, I mean we discuss stuff, but nothing that has felt like disagreeing, we just talk about different ideas until we decide on something together
That does count as a disagreement
But it was never a "I think my idea is better", just a "I had this idea, what do you think"
Ty!
if you both didn't agree, that does sound like a disagreement, regardless of the outcome
otherwise, you do sound like a doormat
To extend on this, even if they agreed with most and suggested parts to improve, that is a disagreement about a part of the idea
I just like hearing everyone out, if they wanna go a different route I am very often fine with that
The point of this question is not about whether or not you have disagreement, but how you deal with them and what you learned from it
spoke to guido at work today
you're going to get cooked when they ask for more details
It just feels kind of dull? "I proposed an idea, they pointed out flaws, we worked together to find good solution, the end"
I have done it in plenty of interviews, it's really not that hard but yeah there is a risk of being caught out
They pointed out flaws that I further researched [provide information here, compare/contrast] and came up with a solution [why was it better from that disagreement] that solves the problem more effectively
There is actually a lot to say about how you approach these types of situations and how you would approach them differently or not today
you don't have to outright fabricate shit though, you can just bend the truth
pretty easy to catch
not really
in interviews for companies that i actually wanted to be at, the follow up questions were such that if you hadn't guessed them beforehand, you really wouldn't be able to come up with answers on the spot
you just don't see it as an interviewee
yeah coming up with a lie on the spot is probably a bad idea, the point was about preparing answers/stories that make you look good when you don't have real experiences you can draw from
I still can't really think of any specific times, because they have all just been normal parts of the design process so I never paid much attention to them
disagreements are absolutely part of the normal process.
Not having any disagreement is a red flag in itself
That's what I mean, I never paid much attention to them because they are normal, so I don't have any specific instances to point to
for example, one time they asked me that question in an interview, I had done a team project in college but we hadn't had any major disagreements. I just made up that my teammate and I had a disagreement about x function and it was resolved in y way that sounds good.
Well, then it's a good time to start paying attention 😉
literally graduating tomorrow yes I shall do that
best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is today
if it stopped there, it wasn't a behavioral interview. It's missing a crucial piece.
Yesterday also seems like it would have been a really late time to start /s
The third best time to start was the day before yesterday
I mean ofc they asked a bunch more questions, but they weren't all focused on that project. What crucial piece is missing?
Unfortunately, not gonna expand on that because of rule 5
what part of the explanation would violate rule 5?
the part that helps someone cheat
that is a ridiculous cop out of the conversation but ok
Is there any chances to get junior backend positions with flask? Or to put it in other words, is there any demand for it?
sure, why not?
I was just looking through applications and wasn't finding any on linked in or glassdoor.
I see quite a few on linkedin.
why specifically flask though?
I'm building a project in it rn, what would you recommend?
look for python backend rather than a specific framework. If you know flask, you would zero issue adapting to django or others.
Note also that a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation. So make sure to work on that as well if you aren't already
I have major in CS, I think my main problem is I have like... 0 finished projects
what did you do in school then?
School?
yes, where you got your major in CS
In university.
indeed
I've done some boot strap front end while working in a team for bachelors degree and for major it was simple approximation algorithm for calculating the speed with witch corona was spreading (it was 90% research though)So basically wasted time.
why is it wasted time?
Well, If I was building more projects, I would be more suited to find a job I think.
yeah, in general schools would have you make more than one project over the course of your education
just enrolled for a BS Computer Science degree wish me luck!
Hey! I am a beginner How can I contribute in open source in python and get in touch with the maintainers ?
Github
i have zero idea how to use github
please guide me
My first year just ended and I started learning DSA using python during this summer break. In coming months, I want to gain some open source experience. Any guide or tips for me would be greatly appreciated.
Hi everyone! I am an incoming final year Data science undergraduate, and I wish to do a final year project as I wish to contribute to smth meaningful, and possibly enter grad school in the future. Problem is, i have absolutely no ideas on what my thesis should be. I'm thinking of doing smth deep learning related but i am not sure.
I am quite lost on this and I really hope seniors here can guide me on how to find a thesis topic. Where/what should i start researching/reading on? How to know what things are needed in the industry, so that i can research on it?
I hope I don't regret turning down the ML engineer role several years down the line. I just did it and the recruiter seemed honestly sad.
But like, the role I took is a bit ... easier? My current role only required 20-50 % of my time and effort while still having great performance. For the rest I did my own projects, watched Netflix or just slept.
The new role I accepted will require more but not 100 %. I'm going to try to do more, maybe go to 100 % for the first time since I graduated 😅.
Their main competitor 😂 (both are in consulting).
They do no cutting edge ML projects (except gen AI, which doesn't count). The projects are more centred around accelerating companies that aren't doing a lot with data yet. Building the pipelines and so on. If 2-3 projects have been done on the same account and they have good fundamentals then they gradually turn into ML projects.
The one I rejected has way bigger accounts (e.g., big banks) that have more maturity and more advanced, but way longer, projects.
They had (or have?) an R&D division but I'm curious if they didn't just convert them to engineers because of the market
Iirc they were doing stuff like geometric deep learning, which is pretty cutting edge for industry
Because you're afraid the R&D dept will just throw things over the wall that are undercooked and not ready for prod?
Hmmmm I disagree a bit. I work with bio engineers. They're smart people and also great at ML. They have no clue about deployment or how to do inference at scale, but they're product focused
If I were you I'd take anything that looks legitimate enough and use that as a launchpad when the market rebounds
That's another thing to factor in yes, but if you're moving to a decent location you want to stay in medium to long term that's also a win
Did you end up rejecting them?
One of my good friends is going through this process (applying from abroad + relocating, doesn't need a visa) and it seems rough
Hey please do share! im happy to know about them
<@&831776746206265384> ad

hey, i'm a core dev of a blockchain project that is using native python smart contracts - no transpilers etc, just pure python - and if this is a field you are interested in then we could probably work out some interesting things you could work on. i can also imagine that we pay you for that work. some examples:
- auto generate smart contracts by describing to an AI what the contract should do
- same as 1) but by sending audio to AI
- integrating that blockchain with some real world scenario
- smart contracts to use Mojo instead of python
these are just things i can think of immediately but if you are interested and have other ideas then let me know!
@turbid bobcat great ideas! thanks for bringing them up. i will note them down since these might be interesting for us too 👍
working in a clinical research lab this year. much of the work is hypothesis testing and similar analysis
completely new to coding and need some help! thing is i've started already so not only need a resource for learning but any basic repositries or templates to help get some of the simpler things done
thank you so so much! please link me with any help! ty

definitely a smaller job market, that's for sure
but quite valuable skills yeah. I ended up becoming a cloud engineer pretty early on thanks to university internships and ended up pretty well paid
Hi I m a student
I am applying for internship. i need to improve my resume how can i? do you have suggestions for me.
i'd add a picture and contact information
I have added contact information at top, below my name.
i think that's better for the job interview, but not better for posting here
picture??? that's only gonna work in certain countries.
Hi I am student can u suggest me project topic which can contain 200 marks
must be a cultural thing then. i'm from the netherlands, most resumes i see have a picture
ah we don't do that in the US, i see
ah i didnt know. also i don't know where he is based
maybe he is in the US and it's better not to add a picture
By the looks of it, they're based in India
yea that makes sense
guys I need help I am gonna write proposal for gsoc all my contributions are whack man • Discovered SSH brute force attack vulnerability • Discovered vulnerability related to session login • Integrated anti-root detection in react native • Reverse engineered the app and discovered that some API keys are visible, informed the team • Discovered DDoS vulnerability • Developed a method of uploading images by removing their metadata to mitigate potential security risks, and discovered a vulnerability related to potential malware entry in the backend server via image uploads • Developed a slack bot that sends errors to the slack server from the server • Worked on eazebuzz payment api
damn
@turbid bobcat bro I am really if u dont like the ping but I really need ur help
I need to pick the best ones
nah man I am applying to django and react native roles
I am sure the impacts of my stuff could be very great if I write them correctly
• Integrated anti-root detection in react native
• Reverse engineered the app and discovered that some API keys are visible, informed the team
• Developed a method of uploading images by removing their metadata to mitigate potential security risks, and discovered a vulnerability related to potential malware entry in the backend server via image uploads
• Developed a slack bot that sends errors to the slack server from the server
• Worked on eazebuzz payment api ```
FINRA grilled me for applying to another role during the interview
weird ass interview
They were like yea the manager is deep in the interview process
And he was like when are you meeting with the team again? And I was like monday
like wtf
should i have lied?
and then the classic "oh i'll talk to the hiring mgr and i'll lyk"
like hahahahahaha that's fucking hilarious
so im starting again from scratch, has anone got any tips for me?
it's fucking bullshit HR talk, i've dealt with it enough to know
Hey ! I’m a resident surgeon so I mainly do clinical research involving basic stats and hypothesis testing.
I have basic familiarity with R and Python but because of work not much time.
To be more specific, i'm looking for guides/videos/repositories or even videos that specifically look at coding for clinical research, which involves hypothesis testing, machine learning for predictors of disease, and clustering analysis for methylation patterns for prognostication.
I'm having some specific issues with a few projects. it would help to see some examples of how it's done correctly. Unable to find much, would appriciate any help!
No hate but what is special about discovering vulnerbilities?
You may want to ask in #data-science-and-ml : the more specific your question, the better the answer will likely be. Machine learning, as you can imagine, is very domain specific.
idiotic recruiter behavior, another thing i have to tolerate. when it rains it pours
The recruiters are not the decision makers, it's a job where you can't make everyone happy.
they shouldn't have been talking to each other in the first place
I mean yoi got bughunters yeah but most basic problems can be found with penetration testing?
great! mainly basic stats
hey is no one gonna talk about my resume
which one ?
oh anti root ?
I integrated anti root protection using jail monkey
it implies I used packages to prevent to prevent the app being used under root privileges preventing stuff like game guardian
yes that is it that is what I meant
Last time I was job hunting one recruiter wanted to know at what other companies I was interviewing or how far along in the process I was with other companies. I was honest and then asked why - reason was so that they knew how fast they would have to act on it if they did decide I was the best candidate for the role. (I got an offer the next day, but ended up going with a different company)
If interviewers started grilling me just because I was interviewing with different companies I'd thank them for their time and end the interview on my own accord
interviewing with the same company for a different role as well
that's why they got pissed. i'm upset the recruiters talked about me behind my back. they're upset when they did something they never should have
i don't either. cannot predict behavior
Seems perfectly normal to me as well. Could be colleagues talking, could be that A knew you'd fit better for role B, so spoke to people hiring for role B and turns out you already applied?
no, it's not perfectly normal if you're holding it against the candidate
Ah wait, I misread your message
But yea, if they have an issue with it, I'd walk away. I wouldn't be interested in working there after such an interaction
i can't just walk away either, interviews don't exactly fall from trees. i unfortunately have to handle this behavior too.
Yea, I guess you can only walk away if you're in a position of already having a job and don't mind staying at it for longer
i have a flimsy internship that lasts till august and i am desperately trying to find a way out
They have some documentation on what elements should be in a proposal
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/student/writing-a-proposal
thanks
I've yet to see a bug bounty pay out anything over 250k for a single vulnerability/exploit
Than the found a bug without it being a bounty ig and paid out in crypto
What?
If they want a really high bounty
At that point, you likely wouldn't mention that you sold a 0-day on the black market in your resume
I'm not sure I follow, but we can take it to off-topic or #cybersecurity
👍
Just saying really high bounties would be randsom if explout without knowing that s it but illegal
so u got any job ?
which projects should I look for gsoc ?
u should see their website they explain better thant I can
oss ?
Somebody knows freelancer jobs with python?
Late post: Never thought this would occur to me. But I got a rejection letter 3 years later. name and shame

I got a BS in electrical engineering
And I have a job, so I guess that makes me pro
There are quite a few others around here too
why do i see memes of going homeless after getting a comp sci degree
probably linked to the latest string of layoffs and the difficulty for entry level engineers to enter the market?
Do u think comp sci degree matters for Job profile or others as a programmer
a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
How much were you guys paid at an entry level python-based job? Please specify what job it was as well.
it depends on the role, location, education level, company's maturity, etc.
Yeah well, feel free to answer with those metrics specified as well!
am not gonna give a table with 5 dimensions
well I didn't ask for a table with 5 dimensions, you chose to bring it up!
I wonder if anyone has tried Julia programming language? They claim it is faster than Python and more suitable for compute-intensive tasks!

What are the jobs available for Python compared to Julia?
In this tutorial, I explain how to use the Meshes package in Julia. Processing mesh in Julia programming language has never been easier. With the help of Meshes library in the Julia programming language, you can develop solutions for discretizing partial differential equations using the finite element method.
Meshes.jl provides efficient implem...
Indeed. Because you chose to bring that question
Yeah well, if you're not interested in answering the question, you could've just refrained from responding
Instead of being pretty destructive to the conversation tbh.
This is a complex question that does require a complex solution.
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer there.
Good luck!
this is probably a better fit for #python-discussion
I'm just asking for people's personal experiences man, I'm aware the scene is complicated.
Kids are chatting over there like it is their DM.
they will make space for interesting topics
Maybe if you asked something interesting, the "kids" would entertain it.
I have already asked my question, whether it is interesting or not is totally subjective!
Fair and balanced!
When I switched from a help desk technician to a Python dev in 2022 my salary went from mid-50s to mid-70s. I'm still in that first dev job making over 90k. This is in the US
Glad I made the switch when I did because I'm not sure I could in this market
Oh that's great, your salary has doubled after switching jobs from an IT dude to a python-dev, why would you not be able to make the switch in this market?
you can try to find appropriate figures for your situation online
I started at $56k back in 2012. Now 12 years later at a different job I make around 3x that with much better benefits
Thoughts on .NET framework
Umm, a. This is careers channel. B. This is Python discord. C. That's a really low effort question 🙂
darn
Maybe ask a specific question? And frame it with some context (who are you and why are you asking?)
its ok nvm you have a point
still good to get into programming and ignoring your passion, cuz of the buyers market situation?
For what it's worth, i think that same job i got back in 2012 would pay way more now
Do you think with the salary you currently receive, someone would be able to comfortably live in NYC?
Ignoring your passion?
Don't do programming if you don't like programming.
Single? yeah. Supporting the size family i have right now? Not a chance
I've seen other advices from prominent software developers, they don't like the act of coding itself, but enjoy creating stuff.
NYC is a little unfair, one of the most expensive metros in US
And the pay is good.
What about other metropolitans in the US?
Well i'm currently in the us, so...
Technically there is easy answer. @tacit bone just Google Glassdoor, job role (optionally with rank), country name, optionally town
if u wish analytics
Though i'm not living like downtown anywhere
Yeah makes sense
It really depends on what you mean by "comfortable"
SWEing is a well paid field. As are many others. And none of them are 'easy'.
Yeah SWE is the field I'm interested in.
Right; no matter what your salary is and what level of comfortable living you require, it is always a good amount of work to maintain a budget and be wise with your finances. There's no amount of money you can make where that's not the case
I guess at a certain point you can pay someone for that...but they will still be working hard
not have to worry about money I guess, not living like a spendthrift, but money isn't constantly on the front burner either when you're going out.
Then don't live in nyc 🙂
Yeah lol
There's definitely a point where you don't spend much time thinking about finances. If your net income is 2x your expenditures, you probably never need to check your account balance before paying a bill or buying something affordable
Also a personality thing. I'm terrible with finances, but also never worry about them either. My accountant friends are the opposite. I think we are all at similar income and expense levels.
Yup that's the dream, invest a good part of your pay check into S&P's and hopefully make it big.
do you have any addictions or expensive hobbies? those are usually the causes for having a hard time managing finances.
Not particularly. Works my hobby. But kids are expensive 🙂
Yeah I feel ya, though I don't got kids yet.
facts
being a good parent and fulfilling your kids wants and needs is hard
it's a start.
Although glassdoor is a bit outdated and does not cover all the markets
hi guys - do you think its worth to re learn python to use in medicine as to read and extract info from files , automate creating files and calculations based on info from different file forms or numbers extracted from web pages
i used to play with python then i started workin in hospital so i got back to zero - now i just have a feeling that python can introduce help
indeed , the thing is my community just woke up to programming its not a normal thing here yet lol ppl underestimate it so grossly
lol to be honest exactly what i am doing now - chemotherapy
oh honey - i feel ya , i feel bad that i take more secs just copying stuff over and over while i see my pediatric patient is waiting for his treatment at the door
me at the momentum - sis just another ctrl + v and u will be free
well tnx hon- appreciate the help

Waiting for responses sucks

Can someone describe to me the state of the job scene for knowing python? A little about me, I started programming when I was 27 and I am 34. I feel too old and somewhat inept. I have no confidence that I could actually get a job programming because I think I am too stupid to compete with others. I guess that's just a personal problem. I have already had like 30 jobs and I feel like I could never sit down in another interview. Maybe I should be talking to a life coach haha. But what's the job market like? Are jobs rare? Is it super competitive?
I think I would like to help work on droids. As in the ones which are going to be walking around. But I also think that people go to college to get a degree for jobs like that and I am self taught , I never went to university.
generally it's tough to land a job in SWE w/o a degree, but if you've have a lot of experience working before, you could use that as leverage
it comes down to how you frame your previous jobs and their relevance to a certain role that you're going for
you asked for "state of the job scene for knowing python", I'm assuming that means you only have experience with Python, if that's so - regardless of how you phrase your previous experience it'll still be difficult, there are far more things employers look for than just knowing Python
Thank you.
Yo where are u at? Seems like you're putting in applications all over the world lol. Gl with the interview. What position is it for?
Hey guys wru doing Ai/ml or web development?
something something about correlation and causation not being the same 🙂
But yeah, I'm curious what you'll end up landing eventually
Did you do the RAG thing? Deployed it and all?
with AI topic raised again, i wish to mention having found looking like awesome article
A voice of truth in a house of madness 😄
https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-fucking-piledrive-you-if-you-mention-ai-again/
AI is such a nuanced topic. My stance as a ML engineer is that your task is to avoid it at all cost because the TCO is so high, but when it makes sense to use it you should have the skills to do it successfully.
do read it ^_^ it is among those lines
The issue is that traditionally people in ML/AI were often times not SWEs but statisticians, Bio engineers, physiscists, (based on my colleagues). None of them can really code properly, don't know what HTTP stands for etc. It never provides value at all.
That's a correlation, you don't know it's because the changes were made that you got those extra interviews
I think the person writes in such an annoying way hahaha. There's a bit of truth in there but idk why they have to make it so controversial
the style hits the right spot for me 😄 too much of AI recently
i should add this to my list of questions during interviews: Asking if they have AI.
Not wishing to work in company that has it as main part of development
It would look too much dreadful in my resume. Wishing clean history of proper software development.
Ai will replace humans
Ai will replace duck in the pond 😂😂
Why criminal tell us that he is criminal 😂
"AI" as people think of it right now is just software engineering. It's calling an external service like Stripe. What people get wrong is that it makes no sense to integrate Stripe into a service that has nothing to do with payments. As the engineer you can stop this from happening and apply it correctly.
My english is poor because i learn coding first btw I mean why chatgpt tell you that I will replace humans
Kind of
😌maybe you are right
Just searching google has always been "AI". People forget this.
Agi is same as ai
Just a lot of hype and grifters right now, but saying you don't like AI also means you don't like basic things like searching the web or getting videos recommended on YouTube 🥴
I think this is marketing strategy
I don't think snake oil salesmen should convince you to buy their BS product, but nor should they dissuade you the real thing is also fake
I also think Software development is real coding , and ai/ml is half math half coding
Hmm Spotify is doing good
Yes it's true I think
Exactly. You should always try to do it with if else first but there's valuable problems out there that cannot be solved like that. (Such as searching the web). That's the job of the ML engineer. Solving it with if else wherever possible but also recognizizng when you need more.
People will eventually know that ai is nothing but code itself 😂
Anyhow. To round this up. There's been a lot of companies here that wanted to do "innovative ML" and after a couple of years they now have 2-3x more dev ops + SWEs than ML people
Yes and i think it's all marketing that bunch of companies like Nivida are doing
When Nivida CEO says coding will be replaced by ai and coding is dead and everybody can code now after that Nivida profit touch the sky , so it's all marketing
Hmm , and people are saying ai will replace them I say Time will replace who not able to change
Time when machine developed in 19th century everyone was fear then also
Yes CEO is just representing
Until nvidia starts replacing their developers with ai, it's just marketing
i don't mind actually. doing something for society is fine if you are into that. you then at least do something for someone else but what i hate is all the "look what i am" thing. like everyone is an entrepreneur. as if investing into some shitcoin and gaining 10k makes you an entrepreneur for example 🤣
not sure about the high-tech sector where very specific knowledge and experience is needed but i do see a huge issue for "normal" devs in near future. not because you're not able to produce good code as a human but because AI does it 1000x faster. imo in future most devs will start getting prompt-engineers 🙂 they won't be gone but they will work together with AI for sure
Yes, AI is just another hammer in my toolbox. That said, except for boilerplate code, I've found any AI coding to be extremely limiting and unable to really do much more than just writing my boilerplate code for me. And then I still have to go through it and fix stuff most of the time. I don't see a future of devs being replaced by AI anytime soon.
People have been claiming that AI/Automation will be erasing jobs since forever. All it actually did was change what tools people use to do the same jobs or create jobs in a different market that lead to the automation tools that replace jobs
do you remember how i was so angry yesterday? they moved me to the next round lmao
Nivida will never do that
Exactly
Best to just ask your questions. Lots of ppl are
can someone explain what do i need to learn to become a ml engineer?
i know pandas matplotlib sckikit learn
honestly, just a bit more than basic
do you have any degree?
currently persuing bachelors in AI
That seems like a good next step
Nothing we can tell you here that you won't learn in school
school isnt exaclty teaching in terms of what the industry is currently doing.
Maybe not, but you need that good foundation down first
Lots of people want a roadmap, but there is no single roadmap. The more advanced you get, the more unique and narrow your path gets. Starting out, you need a good foundation. Maths, coding, theory.
Practically you could just do a survey of different techniques and do small projects in many domains (a computer vision, llm fine tuning, lstm, etc)
PSVM i love you dawg
will I use models like knn, linear regression in a job?
I use linear regression all the time
fuck, 5 interviews next week
Being good at EDA is an important skill
You probably won't use knn. Models you train will use linear regression as part of the algorithm.
What's eda
Oh exploratory data analysis
@fringe sphinx , wish me luck bro
Exploratory data analysis. Just using basic stats to get a sense of the data
can i dm?
(What you probably do naturally when you start with a data set)
Nah, I don't dm. Also, I'm a data engineer... I'm ml adjacent
Python is great
Is national insurance and british passport an acceptable form of ID for an interview/work in general?
Presumably in Uk? Certainly not in Us 🙂
Yup, UK
i'm also trying to network using the hofstra name
Although, how does one work in the US if i only have a british passport?
you need work authorization. this could come in the form of a visa
After years of work in UK, of course
Oh, okay. How does green card work? The internet makes the process sound complicated.
i have no idea. but it seems hard
There's many types of visas, including programs for students who recently graduated in the us
Yeah , student visa but that is entirely dependent on whether or not the university supports them and is willing to pay
It is complicated and long, and you need a sponsor (employer) who will stick with you during the process
But if i remember, it's usually the student that pays unless it's through some sort of scholarship
Oh, alright. Do you know how long the process can be?
Although, I'm not surprised as the government is trying to protect it's own country from any possible threats.
Took 3 years for one of my guys
Goodness, what did he do outside of that during that 3 years period?
But he was on OPT during that time, then h1b
OPT? I'm not familiar with that word
I think he worked for us for 6 years or so before he got it
Search f1 opt
Oh, okay. Doesn't sound so bad if he got payed during those 6 years.. But I'm assuming they payed him as if he was already in America, or do they look at where he currently lives?
my friend got 90 days before he left the US after he graduated. he's from ukraine. got his job on the last day for sinclair advertising
He lived in US: he graduated from a local Uni, was eligible to work for 3 years on OPT, then got h1b
Damn, that must be nerve racking
Oh, okay. Glad it went well for him, but shocked it could take that long.
I'm assuming it's longer for most depending where they're from, religion, etc.
oh so i've been talking to the hofstra graduate biz career relations person and she put me in touch with a hofstra alum at FINRA
The green card process was crazy complicated. And a lot of waiting. And if your employer goes out of business or fires you, you're screwed
Damn, so it's essentially one big lottery ticket
yep
I'll give it a try later down the line, but thanks for letting me know about OPT and h1b
I may need to make a revolutionary idea/project for them to give me a green card like the movie concussion if anyone is familiar with that movie, haha.
There's another visa for special talent
Oh, I'll research more about that. Anyway, I don't want to take any more of your time. All the best, and take care!
Classic damian or just classic recruiter stuff?
He's only human after all

Trent! Long time no talk. How are you?
lots of work these days 🤷♂️ guess I can't complain about that
chasing funding, intern wrangling, keeping the team sane
how's the job hunt?
you have a summer intern? how are they 👀
several, arranged through the local STEM high school.
It’s been quite difficult man. But I think there’s light at the end of the tunnel!
5 interviews this upcoming week 🙂
I’ve never gotten this many consecutive interviews
they do really amazing work for high schoolers but the problem is I don't have enough time to support their projects in addition to my own
That's great! Diligence paying off.
It sure is! Now I just have to keep going. My current internship is going well too, but I don’t think they’re going to be happy with the amount of hours I keep missing
yep, it's no time to give up when the end is in sight
sheesh. is it just you wrangling or are there other people involved. at my intern place there's ~100 interns, so there's a whole hr (sub)team for it
What should I expect of 8th grade?
mostly me
my team at my internship is very unorganized
That depends entirely on your school.
I want to ask if there are job opportunities for django ?
Probably

Check your local job listings and you'll know
alright, i think. hbu
not bad not bad. Review season is coming up in august
So there's always a push to go do stuff that impresses other people outside of your team. I absolutely hate it
If someone annoys me during the interview and they move me to the next round I'd not take the job
im so cooked rn
Hi guys , how do I report a guy in here ?
DM @severe widget
can someone tell me if I can finish file handling in 1 day
Use a pigeon
I am preparing for another exam but I have computer exams too but they teach us fast and I am not able to understand
they are teaching 11th and 12 th portion in 3 months
I get ton of homework for physics chemistry and maths which takes up 6 hours so the python teacher told us to finish studying python in class only
yeah exactly
Is hs python used in college
I mean are the basics needed or it will be taught
Ok np
generally there's an intro to CS your first semester that will cover the basics of some language
often python
but later on it's usually expected that you either know a certain language (or multiple) or figure it out
that's great then I should have dropped computers and taken something easier for now
the language itself doesn't matter too much for higher level CS studies
the concepts are more important and you can probably implement them in any language
yeah coz to get computers in college I gotta study pcm properly
gotta be visible to management 😔. so what's your plan 👀
Oh wow thats interesting! Thanks for the reply!
got it! thanks for the informative sharing!!
I’m available for python related projects
This isn't a job board
that becomes more true once you want to go beyond senior, for good reasons
I don't think I've ever felt this. The push is to have broader influence and awareness of the big picture. A principal should have a much broader perspective and influence than their code alone vs a junior who is generally task oriented.
Right. Which means the scope and impact goes beyond your team. Which means you leave a positive impression on other people outside of your team
Oh, yah, misread your intent, exactly.
Some people do have an impact and scope beyond their team, but if they leave a negative impression, that doesn't speak well of their positive impact :p
Hi all, I'm starting college this fall, and I was just wondering if it's worth starting to learn how to program now to get an advantage for future career opportunities/interviews, or would it be better to just take a break over a the summer until I start my lessons normally? Would love to get your opinions on this
Learning a little programming will make intro to programming easier (assuming you're taking it), and make your first semester a little smoother.
Honestly, if your college had a calculus course (which it usually does), the best thing you can do is brush up on math - being even mediocre at algebra makes calc pretty miserable. Beyond that, if you can figure out what language your college uses, learning that will make it easier, thus giving you more time for extracurriculars that will be helpful for your career stuff (or just take the time for your mental health, college can be a slog).
Yeah i'm already familiar with algebra and calc as i've taken it my senior year, I still havent gotten my class schedule yet but I can assume that it uses the basic ones that you can find everywhere. Overall i'm simply concerned that maybe im starting too early/putting too much effort and not prioritizing my mental health and whatnot, especially after working on college apps the past year or so
How long would you recommend studying for someone to have a sizable advantage during classes?
@turbid bobcat hey bud
2 months. Which incidentally is about as long as you have.
Oh so my summer is gone 😭
Huh? Not full time. Just spending an hour or so a day on it, sometimes more sometimes less.
Oh if it's something like an hour then that's reasonable I thought I had to full on grind all day for my to have an advantage
Oh, no. Don't grind. That's how you learn nothing. Small increments daily.
And to make it very efficient: when you get stuck, ask for help in #python-discussion
It's hard, but it's far easier doing it over the summer, especially starting -today- than trying to do it with 4 other classes
Yeah I gotcha
I think the problem is that I feel like I'm pressured by all these people who are complaining about the job scene and getting internships and whatnot and I feel like I'll fall behind if I don't start asap
Don't worry about that. Social media really makes things worse. My advice is only to make your freshman first semester easier: knowing programming makes -one- hard thing less stressful.
You could also study calculus or something else that tends to be hard for freshman.
But programming is fun, in comparison
Yeah as fun as calc was programming does seem more enjoyable
Will try to 🙏🏻🙏🏻
And seriously: hang out in #python-discussion , many people are in your position there, learning programming
I'll definitely do that as I get to be more familiar with the fundamentals more, thank you so much for you help 🙇🏻♂️
will it be weird to ask HR to keep joining date as 2nd week of some month, because you want to resign after taking the annual bonus( which i assume will come in first week of month), so you can resign only in second week
also, is the annual bonus given in 12th salary? if cycle does not follow financial year
or is it 13th?
Not weird and totally normal/reasonable
No idea, depends on company I bet
normally what happens?
With annual bonuses, I don't think there's a normal
Remember Clark Griswold and his Christmas bonus- or lack thereof
I think we're talking about a 1 year "loyalty award" not an end of year bonus.
and any idea of if it would be added to monthly salary or paid seperately?
offer letter said annual bonus, based on performance
in my experience annual bonuses are usually issued around Christmastime and not after 1 year of employment.
But I know there are a lot of different ways of rewarding people and the 1 year award is a thing in some places.
I wasnt given on march, nor in december (nor my colleague got that)
My annual bonus was the end of May
It's a reasonable question to ask your manager. Totally reasonable.
It depends on the company
if it were to be given after 1 year retention, what could be excepted
It wouldn't be typical (again in my experience) for someone to get an annual bonus who hasn't been employed full time for at least most of the preceding 12 month period.
You don't get a Christmas bonus for starting in November.
But again this is highly company dependent and something you should ask your manager (or hiring manager, when interviewing) about, if it is important.
Got reached out to by a founder through ycomb.
We shall see how this goes
Hey guys! i’m an A-Level student (Year 12) and i’m trying to find work experience in London from the 15th to the 19th of July in tech/software development as part of a school WEX scheme. I’ve been looking for months now but most studios just don’t reply to me, and it’s getting closer and closer to the date. Does anybody know of any places that’d be able to offer it? I did consider Virtual Work Experience but the lady at my school who coordinates it said it’d be better to do an in-person one because i get to meet people in the industry
First, have you had your CV reviewed? You can post here (anonymized) if you like.
And, if you can't find something, have a plan B. Volunteer. Get involved in OSS. Go to Europython. Do something meaningful.
yeah i have i’ve had my form tutor go over it with me
Is it best to study discrete structures a bit before you take a class for it?
Sorry, this is not career related. Im not sure where to ask this question
it can never hurt to get familiar with the contents of a class before the class
Okay thanks!
What are other degrees than CS for software engineering. I'm just not good at math
You aren't even in high school yet (if I recall correctly), friend. There is plenty of time for you to become good at math. If you wanted to be a musician or an artist you would have to practice your craft and get good at it over time. Mathematical thinking is a skill you can learn too.
There are less mathy options but don't let the "I'm bad at math" self-narrative pigeonhole you at your age.
What are the less mathy options?
You gonna miss out on many fat paying opportunities if you avoid maths.
math is everywhere
dm me if trynna learn how do python together
being good at math would help them manage all the money they'll make from being a lawyer
not a requiremnt though
Either way, I completely agree that just because you aren't good at math now, doesn't mean there's no hope for you. I also hated math when I was younger
It's a lot easier to learn when you actually have a practical use to apply it to
Instead of just learning abstract formulas without a reason
Once i studied it for 3 hours, did a test, completely forgot (beginner algebra)
and because of that you're going to close a massive door on yourself?
i did get 100. But then i forgot
How old are you between, you sound like 13-14
My math skill is a work in progress. I aim in learning python this summer vacation
correct
Yet you seem to have the whole world figured out
exactly
It's never too late to learn new skills. I've only recently been learning vector math
Coding is largely problem solving, and sometimes that involves "How can I learn this math well enough for my current needs?"
idk what to put as my pfp, pls help
That's not really relevant to this channel
What do you think is better:
Do maths and you can pursue say 100 professions.
Dont do maths and you can only choose among 40 professions, Not to mention most of these 40 professions would pay much less.
Fear of maths is temporary, regret of not doing maths would be forever.
If you learn math, you wont have a regret atleast.
@true hatch
I want to be a corporate lawyer.
congrats!
Math is ok in my opinion, maybe as I get older, my appreciation for math will go up
I am going to join a university as a fresher in CSE core this year
So does anyone have an idea like what specalization will be blooming in the future
So that I can focus a bit more on it
Cuz there are many things like AI/DS , AI/ML ..... so on
Anyone who has a field experience can share your views 🙂
Breadth is more important than depth (specialization) when you're just starting. You should, imo, aim to learn a little of everything. Relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QxI-RP6-HM
The creator of C++, Bjarne Stroustrup, shares some valuable life advice that, let’s face it, all developers, no matter their years of experience could use. According to Bjarne, ‘You can’t just do code’, you need to develop more skills if you want to be a well-rounded successful developer. Watch this unreleased interview if you want some inspirat...
hmm fine, i'll take that note...
lego box in bg
Some smarty-pants was shunning people in the server for learning too many languages and not specializing in one field (also Mosh Hamedani the youtuber), it's funny how the creator of C++ himself advises otherwise.
does college name prestige matter for recruitment in SWE?
Another way to say it is: the best professional specialists that I know know a lot more than their specialty. Academics tend to be a little different tho, Professors are often extremely deep in their research area and not as broad.
probably for you first job if there isn't much else on your cv but after that it doesn't really matter as long as you have the certifications
It's a funny question, because so what? The only time it matters is when you're accepted to a top Uni but affordability is the concern. @burnt cairn
yes, i was just wondering if it would open up any doors or make my experience finding a job easier (going to a t10)
Sure, for lots of reasons it would be a plus. Not essential but a plus.
This is the wrong channel to get help, try #❓|how-to-get-help or #python-discussion
why the fuck do I have to setup some aws serverless and some fucking CI\CD pipeline
I solvd 10 - 15 different errors to do it and some of them are not on stack overflow
I do frontend, backend, mobile, devops, aws, bot development and I get paid pennies
fuck this
indian corporate sector is a scam
you could concentrae at a single specialization in depth and getting hired to better company
or at least not diving into more than two specializations
man my current company gives me any task
they want to setup some kubernetes stuff for aws me an intern
jokes asside and on serious matter
- if u have a choice u can prioritize doing tasks that are more important for your career growth
- do self studies and pet projects in free time in job role/tech stack u wish to have your career going
well, i do both of those things. and so far looking forward one day leaving behind some less pleasant tech stack and having only stuff i desire to work with
I am done with self projects Imma do open source project
I setup jolplin
Guys, I have a question. I completed masters and is looking for jobs. Obviously I want an ML job. But I got an offer for C# dev with maybe a possibility to embed an AI, and maybe work on other C++ stuff. Should I accept this job or keep looking for other? My fear is taking this job now might make it harder for me to land an ML job in the future. I am in Germany and it has been 2 months looking for job.
Obviously I want an ML job.
is there specific reason u want ML jobs first?
hubt — 09/22/2022
i warn everyone that wants to be in AI/ML: you spend a huge amount of time on data validation, cleanup, and analysis. and generally a lot less time than you'd think on the actual AI/ML part. unless your company has very mature data management and data pipelines(very few companies do), expect to spend a lot more time on data engineering than AI/ML
Out of curiosity, do they have C# dev as .Net? if .Net is it for Linux or for Windows?
What will be your development field: Desktop development or Backend development
Answers to those questions may be important for your AI/ML aim
Thats what Ive been studying and doing projects on and I have interest in it.
They are developing for windows. They said something about MAUI.
okay, pure non web GUI development areas then. Desktop/Android/Macos/Ios optionally
going to be very far from AI/ML i think
I don't know C# but they will let me learn. But they are also startup, so I can work on other things mentioned. Not much AI stuff going there.
well.. C# is usable for linux backend (people develop from Rider, Vscode and MonoDevelop at linux with C#). Linux Backend field is very close to data engineering. Data engineering is very close to be majority of AI/ML guy duties. you see the potential road
data engineering is more close to software engineering right? Rather than the job of working on building models, training and math stuff?
well... with very high chance a person can be hired doing both those duties at the same time.
Since work on data engineering field can be more time consumping than on building models, training ML
Data scientists job role exists though if u want concentrate more on math and research stuff
Well thats what I meant, the job titles are not strictly defined these days.
it is hard to change track though. Like... if u got skills in specific development field... switching to other one... assumes plenty of work to do that
and while switching langauges and tech is more or less easy (Because big portion of your knowledge is reusable, the fluff of tech is resonasbly easy to get hang of)
but switching to different job roles and knowing its specific stuff is way harder
and than more far the job role from your current ones, then the change is more difficult, as it will be problematic to learn sufficient amount of its job role stuff in a free time to be... qualified enough to get hired in this field
you can blur at some reasonable cost job titles for very closely located fields. (With risking to receive a person being equally shitty in all duties, especially if person grabs more than 2 job roles)
But for job roles in really the opposite directions... that is magnitude times more problematic
There is limit to human brain capacity, remembering, amount of time/work you can allocate to perfecting specific job role skills, and limit to human lifetime.
Did you apply to this job knowing it wasn't what you really wanted? Or maybe it only became clear during the interview process?
2 months isn't long to be searching for a job in the current market IMO. If you don't need it right now, it's OK to pass up an opportunity you don't want. But there's also no shame in taking what you can get for now and trying to get something better in a year or so when you are on your feet. It really depends on you and many many nuances of your particular situation.
With a MS I don't expect you have to take whatever comes along first unless your personal situation is desperate.
holy hell
why python changed to gaython ? 💀
Fwiw, that wasn't really my experience. I've changed domains several times over my career. There's always many transferable skills if you're an 'engineer' first. But, this is also why I emphasize breadth over depth.
Hello, I'm looking forward to join college in few months, But I'm confused abt which stream i should choose, Computer science or data science, I know abit of c++, and html. I've just started to learn python. But again not sure which to choose, If anybody could guide me, thank you! ( I've completed high school )
My first specialty was very hardware/systems management oriented, later SaaS/applications and currently data.

People are saying it's better to choose cse with ds electives, rather than going for ds, but then they're also saying there's alot of scope in ds 😶.
It probably matters little nowadays, I doubt there's many course differences. Perhaps more math with DS?
Look at the curriculum for each and compare.
im gonna join cs core this september, was not sure about other streams thatswhy i opted core
alright, thanks
Oh, nice!!! atb
I did my degree in DS. It's just more statistics than traditional cs degree. I still ended up doing SWE and not DS for work though
This is of course very university and course dependent. A different uni might approach their DS degree differently
is it worth learning python at 13 to make good money in 1-2 years
14-15 years seems a bit early to want to make money using programming
your time is better spent learning and getting into a CS program at a university
usually not hiring that young
i would just do side gigs
if you really got it down, and can market, then sell what you got
make nice functional apps with ad spaces and sell those out
who knows, it might be a good way to earn a small income
is it bad to put all techs I saw along my studies?
Like, I saw java, but the syntax
Unless you have very little to put on your resume, I wouldn't recommend it - knowing the syntax barely counts
So I put only techs I have actually explored deeply?
These guys were like hmmm it seems like you’re more IT compliance than finance and were heavily biased against my biz analytics degree
Then I had to convince them I actually knew finance
Like for fuck’s sake
They called me “extremely knowledgeable” by the end of the interview
Like what does that mean??
Like I don’t need you to patronize me
this might be my first interview where they think i'm over qualified
my dad explained it to me like this: "They could decline and pick someone else bc an overqualified candidate might want to leave"
