What jobs?
"Jobs involving Python" have enormous variety
I meant jobs including coding in general.
But I don't know if income/work ratio is the best metric to use for selecting your career
Even more so then
Of course.
Software engineering is one of the most important jobs in modern industry. Software engineering is more than just "writing code", and requires a well-prepared mind. There are many jobs in tech, and many types of software engineering jobs. AI isn't coming to take our jobs: it's just yet another tool to make us able to build greater things.
I find the claim that coding jobs as a class are "OP" to be highly suspicious
You do not think so?
I don't even know how I would evaluate the claim that it's likely to change in the near future
By "a lot of people", are you talking about youtubers?
I'm not even really sure what it means tbh
I do not.
Or are you talking about people who work in the field? Or are you listening to your peers or people who don't work in the industry? We hear a lot of hot takes from people with no experience, so consider the source.
on the slide what imges shld i include? shld i include just logos of jira / javaa / git - and have my own bullet points. or shld i just have one large image of something like (an ss of our jira sprint)? our a screenshot of my code? if i do the logos - i can add my own text to the slides, if i just do one giant image i can't add text bullet points?
It might those you metioned that is why I asked here, I was reading some reddit posts and forums and some of my relatives are in that field.
I work less time and make more than some people I know. I also do different kinds of work that I studied for years to be able to do. I don't get paid as much as I might if I moved to Seattle or Austin. Sometimes (not that often), I work unpaid nights and/or weekends. I have to be available sometimes when other people need me. But on the average my workplace is pretty relaxed and I'm happy with my compensation. Is my job OP?
My take is: software engineering will be different in 10 years, just like it's different from 10 years ago, and 10 years before that. It's a continually changing landscape. Data science and data engineering is surging in importance right now, and will be for the foreseeable future.
Would say so, just the first part makes it.
Oh man, my job is certainly OP. I left big tech for same money, and more family time, a long time ago. Got to coach my kids sports teams, super OP.
is a college degree really that worth 😔 i wanna leave so bad man
Short answer, yes. Long answer? Tell us more.
na im overreacting im just not as good at math and phys as i thought i was sadly so its ruffin me up
A cloud of logos isn't bad, but if you can, also do something about your specific project (class diagram, screenshot of the finished project if that makes sense, picture of an F1 car if the project has to do with engines, a group photo of your team if nothing else)
guys i was planning to take cs50 AI is it good?
I’m just confused on what to do in future that is why I asked those and maybe OP wasnt the right word lol.
what if i juts screenshot a jira taskboard - it has all the specifics of my project
I’m taking CS and I’ve forgotten everything about calculus except how to differentiate lol, discrete math is my jam now
Better than nothing
Just finished my second year
But don't expect people to be reading it, the point of that screenshot would be "I have used Jira" not "here's everything about my project"
well ya its just a visualization? i would be talking over it? i figured its better than throwing logos onto a screen - to have something specific to my project
well what is the project anyway
1st year?
cloud file system
ya
we r not done with the project tho - but i thot its good to talk about cus im currently working on it?
I did terrible 1st year. Epically terrible.
shld i only talk about finished projects???
My old man advice is: you're not bad at math and physics. You're (probably) bad at putting the work in.
Great, make a quick diagram with icons for users and a cloud that shows what a cloud filesystem is and splash that up there
@hidden bloom what’s this for
presentation in person assemsent centre..
Oh not like a job interview right
you can probably do that in PowerPoint in like ten minutes
I guess longer if you aren't used to doing visuals in ppt
its part of me getting the job tho
probably true to be honest
If it’s the early stage Probably don’t wanna write too much or they just won’t read it
job interview is separate to this presentation
It's basically part of an extended interview
final stage ....
Ah okay good luck
If you’re in the final stage you’re in a good position, they’re probably just assessing if you’re an asshole or not now lol
Uni requires putting a lot more time in, unlike high school. HS, you could just cruise through classes and get by on intellect/intuition/etc. Uni, you actually have to actually learn the topic and identify what you're stuck on.
god i hope
Are you in Calc 1 or 2?
calc 1 im not doing that bad its just the amout of stuff you take is insane
If the conversation turns casual you’re home free
The good thing is: I think it gets easier. It's not just because you get better, it's that the classes become a bit more interesting and intellectual, and less generic calc/physics/intro to programming/etc.
@oak oak are your first year
i love programming sadly my major only has it for the first year, defo wanna advance my programming knowledge after uni tho
but damn i thought it was very easy ngl, algos eat my brain
First year is the hardest for a lot of people
Philosophy was my hardest class this year lol
i'm in the final round for two interviews today, wish me luck!
Nice!
you should advance your programming knowledge while in uni so you can be hired after graduating
im gonna try but i think i need to get a online course or something
Watch like the first hour of a tutorial and start writing some dogshit code and learn from there
i did that but i noticed when it comes to harder problems the issue is the approach
like i made some code that applied the quadratic formula but like in lecture they asked us to define a function that reverses a list in python witought using the .reverse function and my brain turned off
Dad advice again: Don’t stress it yet, finish the semester and focus on your coursework. Get your study habits in check.
Yah, part of this just comes from experience and comfort with the fundamentals. Reversing a list can be done in lots of ways. You could iterate backwards over a list. You could swap elements. You could iterate forwards and insert to the first position. Etc
Java programmer makes a new class that indexes the elements in reverse 💀
it took me until my second year of full college to get solid study habits
if i say something like this: "coding is the last step and hoepfully by the time you reach it, it is the easiest step. - its all the careful consideration that comes before it that is hard. if im coding my own personal tiny project technically i do not have to use git / jira / have a well thought out design, but when u are working for a corporation all those skills are necessary as you are working against actual business requirements, that has a deadline, in a team, not just by yourself" is that good? - im tryna show that i explicitly know why these skills are desirable. this isn't all im going to say obvioulsy just like the closing bit for that slide. i will set context and talk about the project and what im working on etc prior to this fyi
I don't feel you should say that. You don't need to point out in what ways the skills you learned were not necessary or explain why they're important. It's unnecessary
what books do you recommend to read for career development, promotion, level up in IT jobs ? (non technical books)
TBH... no books. you just need experience and certs.. maybe ITTL for more management development is good too
someone suggested to read Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time - these books are useful ?
nope because you can read millions of those books. people will still be people. you just need to get your butt up and start doing things on a consistent basis.
Stop relying on motivational books. Those dont get you to the end goal. Small consistent wins each day gets you through the end.
You want to learn something? go take up on a skill course and stick thru it till the end. And we can talk.
I walked that road, where i was searching for easy way out of life but it doesnt get anywhere. Take up one skill you want to specialize on, and dont do anything else until you get certified or learn that skillset where it can land you a job or boost your career path etc.
When you actually achieved something, you can go read up on those motivational books and it can be somewhat helpful but not before.
yes you are right i need to finish my technical courses first 🥹 i am thinking too much
best to concentrate onto hard skills in career first years
(Unit testing best practices by Khorikov heavily increases productivity, and TDD by Kent Beck book)
If u want to read smth like how to do work twice faster, then better to read book from the programming point of view.
Like this book
^ agreed. If you are going to read book, read something that will actually enhance your skills from technical perspective lol.
As a career Prompt engineering how do I get that job?
By applying
It's such a new role I think it's hard to say exactly what employers are looking for except to look at specific job listings
Exactly, like what do they want?
And do I need to have certain skills?
I don't think prompt engineering will actually emerge as an occupation that people train for or do full-time. It might become (and to a ceratin extent, already is) a skill that people who primarily do other things are expected to have.
Maybe but like what else do they want? They are paying a lot of money for it
who is "they"?
Who ever is hiring
I'm not convinced.
People are not hiring for just prompt engineering. And if they are, it’s not a stable position and isn’t good pay. It isn’t a career position
Well how do I know if it works like that? I need more research
also, I think whoever proposed the idea that prompt engineering would be a full fledged occupation was just trying to cover for generative AI's perceived potential for job displacement. Like the people who say that truck drivers will just learn to code.
(the extent to which generative AI will displace jobs remains to be seen.)
Idk bro seemes a bit to conspiratorial, but like they are probably gonna be new jobs because of ai and it's gonna take a few years
Let me show you why it won't be a job.
I did not write a descriptive prompt (something required for good prompt engineering) and yet there is a system for converting my "bad prompt" into a better one. And these tools will only get better at it. This is a simple example
I'm not alleging that there's a conspiracy. I don't think that the people propsing prompt engineering as a career necessarily have a stake in people believing that generative AI won't eliminate jobs. I just think they're wrong that prompt engineering will be something that people do full-time as a career.
Yes, new jobs will pop up thanks to AI. But the jobs will not be as 1 note as "learn to talk to AI." It would become, "use this AI tool as part of your workflow." People will just have a new tool. It might be an important tool. But it isn't the job
isssss interview time boys and girls
I mean u asked something simple, the image is kinda funny, but I get your point
I was thinking more in the lines improving ai's correct responses or betterment of input output response
if someone is involved in improving a generative AI, they're an ML engineer. not just a prompt engineer.
So u think it's sus
Maybe, but I think prompt engineering will be some kind of thing maybe like a junior position or something
I can't imagine a company needing so many generative AI outputs, nor do I think prompting generative AIs requires so much specialized knowledge, that it would be feasible or cost-effective to have even one person whose full-time job is to prompt generative AIs for 40 hours a week.
Well I guess it's a part of that job, but I'm thinking if they were more complicated stuff to generate
I mean I guess that makes sense, what do u suggest?
also, people from across the workplace would need to communicate to the prompt engineer what the purpose of the generative AI output is supposed to be, to help them identify whether or not the output is good. and that requires knowledge transfer. that seems supremely less efficient than just having the person who needs the output to prompt the genAI themselves.
people just use the generative AIs as tools throughout their workday, without having a (supposed) specialist intermediary. Which is already what's happening.
Agree with Stel: I think these types of roles will move closer to the domain experts and away from "engineering"
Maybe something like a business analyst role
Okay then how do I get into building ai?
How to become an "Expert"
Thats seemes fair
my company even has an internal ChatGPT-like capability that we can use so that we don't leak information to OpenAI et al, which I've been using to write Mongo queries
you need at least a bachelors and often a masters in CS.
What else do I have to practice?
Like experience or something
look for opportunities to work in ML labs while you're a student, and intern at companies doing ML
What do ML companies look like?
Like as an example
OpenAI is the highest-profile company that's just about AI. And a lot of tech companies have ML labs
I live in kuwait, I literally have no idea how to get an internship

are you attending a university in kuwait? and are you a kuwaiti citizen?
Yes, expact
Hah, lol... I think every company has done this. I certainly did.
your university probably has a career services center that can help you with internships. they'd know which companies recruit from you university and can help you navigate employment eligibility requirements.
In addition to what Stel said: Talk to people. Talk to friends of family. Networking is important: get to know what people do around you and what their experience (and connections) are.
I guess, will have try, I hope i can find the counselor
Thx man
So from python what carrers should I work towards or what language do I need to learn to get one.
I need to learn Arabic....
Will do
if you speak an indo-european language, that's gonna be a challenge, ngl
...
Well nowadays the new generation speak more English, so I guess that's that
Gonna make few talks
Yup, and a tip: the goal of meeting with people is to listen. Not to talk.
interview's done!
How did it go 👀!?
If you want a career in programming the default route is to get a degree in computer science.
If you just want to know concretely what kinds of jobs require Python, check the job listings in your city or country
i think it went well, i had examples for each question
Nice! 🤞
The grind is finally paying off
she had a ton of behavioral questions for me and then it turned into a conversation at the end
she was like i see you have so many internships on your resume, how did you so many?
Yo
(i asked questions of my own too)
Wassup peeps, anybody know anything on indentation errors ?
wrong spot, try #python-discussion
My bad, thanks
worth what?
Is their any online course from where I can learn selenium from scratch
I am not able to find any end to end good enough course
This channel is for career discussion. Try #python-discussion maybe
Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if some of you are extroverted and are working in IT and how well that combination works for you. Im quite anxious about regretting what I wanna study at university and not being able to make a fulfilling job out of it
Luckily, engineers don't have to work in caves for the past few decades 🙂
There is a place for all types of people, from introverts to extrovert
Personally I'm pretty introverted, but I work with a lot of extroverts. Many of them prefer architecture, sales engineering and management roles where they don't actually do that much coding, but their technical knowledge is still essential
Who’s Intrested in ai
Lot's of people are interested in ai considering its impact and scope
kk thanks
is this too wordy?
in the computer i was planning to put a pic of my github? but i only have one project on there lol - or what i could do is put a pic of arch graphene or xmr related in the computer that way i can take out the last bullet?
should i remove the html / css from the bottom? - is it unecessary ?
how much does it cost to make a website?
i dont want to put my own github in there because there is only one project there.. so idk if i shld put that on the comptuer lol
l3harris soon!!
A screengrab of github could work but I'd make the browser window small first so it's basically just the header and your name and it looks good on the slide. Then it doesn't matter how many projects you have
shld i just put code from my cloud based file system up on the computer or would the code look too wordy?
my github username is not my real name it is a psyudonym.. so they won't be able to tell maybe?
Putting your favorite tech on there (Arch logo, etc.) would also work. Or even just a picture of your cat tbh
I wouldn't personally use my favorite OS as one of my interests, but maybe I'm just not as interested as you
I mean they're going to assume the account is yours when you flash it on the screen
i am not flashing it? i just keep it as an image inside the computer
When you go to that slide I mean
If it has an image of a github account with a name they're going to know that's your gh
iwas just gonna have that be the first slide? i dont see the point in having a title slide..?
since im starting off with about me. i only have 5 mins to present thisentire thing
Sure
My point is why would it matter if your github username isn't your real name
when somebody sees it they aren't going to think "how do I know that's really you?"
idk if i want to display this on the screentho lol
it might make me look bad obviously im not just displaying that but they could see it if they look into the img
no
im displaying the entire like profile page but my github looks grim not very active so idkkk
don't put the whole profile page on there, it's going to be tiny and unreadable anyway
the entire profile page includes contributions tho that is whta im saying but ur saying crop it out??
thats the point tho - they dont have to read it but they will be able to recognise its github lol
make your browser window really small so the only things visible are basically the github logo and your avatar and username
and maybe like one line of whatever's below that depending on what size looks best
screengrab that for your presentation
do u mean the browser window in the presentation (like the desktop icon) or just like take a smaller cropped out picture
take a smaller picture
this looks just as bad
what if i just right code like this or is that bad
why do you need to show which distros you use?
what I was saying is to screengrab the whole browser window, but just make it small first
when you shrink the browser window down the avatar gets smaller
just funfact idk it looks like there needs to be more content on screen
you can even set your status because that's what's right under your username
i want to learn game development
do u mean like this having the browser squished down so its like vertical and then take a pic of the vertical github view instead?
honestly, I don't understand all this jerkin off on distros so maybe I am the problem here, but for me, it looks strange, you may share what frameworks you use or logos of the projects you have created
yes
fair i wont put logos down then - i just am interested in them idk
no different than putting up your favorite band
i dont actually need them to know i run arch lol idfc it just could be relevant show i have passion for stuff outside of the job?
if that's your own website, you should talk about stuff you are passionate about, be it distributions, languages, etc.
its not a website its a presentation for assemsnet centre
fair enough. I would still say the same thing in the about you.
People can be passionate about all sorts of things
this looks to boring even if i the github image in the computer ? does it not? or is this a good amount of content
Will we ever be replaced by AI?
yes
So the computers will code instead of people?
I wouldn't say Arch shows your passion for programming, for me it looks kinda weird but I guess it also depends on which position you apply. If it is a sys admin or devops type of position then probably that would be beneficial. Probably I am just acting too judgemental right now so sorry
wym - so i can talk abt xmr / arch / graphene - cus i am passionate abt those things?
I don't know they are dangerously smart
this channel is for career discussion, not AI fearmongering
its calm i appreciate the advice nonetheless
I think computers will just replace us at some point
iit looks better with logos removed right? does writing simple code look bad or nah?
what language is that
The about page can give some color about yourself
its meant to be c++ lol
its not an actual page lol this is a powerpoint presentation slide... this is just slide 1 i only have 3 slides - 5 minutes to present.
not sure, using code to say something is overused IMO
I have used the terms page and slides interchangeably.
so just having it as about me and then those two dashes is better?
do u mean make the about_me.html text have colour?
no. When someone say that something gives some color about someone else, it means it gives some context about them. It makes them more humans and less of a name on a piece of paper
It's not just candidate number 4343, but an actual human being with some passions and interests, with a life beyond that interview
i dont think i have time to talk in depth abt my passions / interests icl but trust my personality will come off with what i say just idt it shows in the slides ig?
like this is just a supporting visual so they know just in case they forget what im saying? this is sorta irrelevant
If you want to put info in code, I'd make it less noisy ```cpp
MyName() {
major = "Computer Science";
origin = UNITED_STATES;
}
You don't have to write a book about them. Just mentioning them is more than enough.
so i was mentioning arch / xmr / graphene cus thats what im interested in - i had the logos but the other person said it was eh...
You are going to find conflicting opinions on the Internet 🙂
At the end of the day, you are the decision maker
(as long as you agree with my opinions)
fair
do u think mentionin gmy university is irrelevant i feel like it is i can just say it idkkk
im putting bluejay on the screen cus thats how i first got introduced to programming - and i will be saying that whilst speaking- that feels far more relevant
howd u make that???
powerpoint presentation
wym? its not actual code
I like it 🤷♂️ opinions may differ, as recursive pointed out
well what about the text? and like the numbers on the side? i'm not saying i dont like it, it's sick, i just want to know how to make one
I am a bit confused why you want to show screenshot about how you got introduced to programming and not something that is a better reflection of the you from today, who is a dynamic, skilled and knowledgeable engineer
If someone shows me stuff for beginners, I will think they are beginners
cus i just mention how i got into programming when i talk to talk about my story?
so since i mention bluej thot i migth as well put a pic of it on the screen
it looks better than putting my github up icl
people are simple minded. They will associate you with bluejay and beginners
I would suggest to put something else that shows you have grown beyond the beginner stage
if i put actual code it gets too wordy?
and then if i put a diff image i would have to talk abt it - and i dont have time? i dont want to spend more than 30 seconds on the introduction
- If the concept of that screen doesn't work, then remove it
- you can use anything other than blue jay, paw patrol, teletubbies or anything that will make people think of you as a kiddish/baby/beginner
- You could put a stylized headshot of yourself, a screenshot of a more professional software (ex: pycharm), or whatever else you want as long as it does not conflict with my previous bullets
kk not a picture of myself, a random pic of pycharm feels off if im not mentioning it either, if u put a pic up on a slide - i was taught to mention it - it shld be relevant to what ur saying idk
does the code acc have to be syntaxily correct cus technicaly in the c++ constructor u would have parameters etc.
NOOOO I HUNG UP ON MY INTERVIEWER AS HE WAS SAYING BYE
or is it fine for it not to be for readability sake - or will it being wrong make me look dumb?
tbh, you don't have to go over every details on a slide. As such, you don't have to explain whatever is inside that screen
It's an art between taking liberties for readability and claiming nerd points
kk i chose prior
i can sense ur panic
ooh my interviewer went to RIT, i even mentioned RIT in my interview
yea i am worried
uh oh
cus the 'larger codebase' stuff speaks for itself like i dont think it needs further explanation? also i should change the icons ofc
I would re-arange it a lil bit
Larger codebase at the bottom, learn from xyz at the top, knowledge in the middle
i dont need extra text in the html tags tho right cus the big text like larger codebase speaks for itself and i dont want it to be too wordy
Yeah i think it looks pretty good as is
shld i change it to learn from colleageues? or keep it as 'learned from experience proffesionals' - the second option seems like im bootlicking
He likely didn't notice. Even if he did, he likely didn't give it a second thought. I suggest you don't either. These things happen.
but rn the html tag text is not actual text - im just wondering if i shld put actual relevant text in those tags
yeah i just sent him and the prior interviewer for UHG a thank you email
(hopefully something good happens in the next 2 weeks)
I think that would be a good change yeah
shld i also change it to 'experience enteprise codebase'
Don’t stress that. -that- happens all the time on business calls. Totally normal
so learn from collageus > learn from experienced professionals
yeah, the "experience enterprise codebase" also sounds a bit bootlicky,
so just keep it as 'larger codebase' or 'work on large codebase'
how about 'experience large codebase'
I think "work on ..." is better
What is this list for? 🤔
School presentation for your job orientation research?
assemsnet centre internship presentation
we were asked as to what we hope to gain out of the internship - hard to make it specific to company as the job advert is very vague so this is the best i can do - a bunch of genralities
help me with wording - i want it concise but not too general / unspecific. cus its a slide don't want too many words
shld i put OOP instead of problem solving? should i put version control instead of collaboration ? shld i put agile instead of 'organisation?
When is this presentation?
possible options i can offer:
- learning how to write good productional code with unit tests 😅 (it will be funny if they don't write them though, not really a small chance for that)
- learning to complete tasks in a large code base.
- learning to communicate properly in order to get all task requirements and completing them into a right direction.
- learning best software development practices applicable to company environment.
nov 29th but i have to submit slides to them by 24th friday
thx i like this but its way too wordy for one slide?
shrugs. feel free to refactor to more short form. I tried to word them in a way there will be no miscommunication 😅
i appreciate it but its too much for a singular slide but ya i will consider
You've been working on this a lot today. Aren't you in the UK? Getting late there
lol that is one way of telling me to be quiet
Not really my intention
But I do think you're very close to this and you're tunnel visioning a little
i trust u, im just joking but even if u r srs i understand y u would be annoyed
Might be time to lay it aside and come back tomorrow with fresh eyes
very close to what exactly?
im patiently waiting for my eureka moment
btw, u can fit all those phrases in a large font i think if u will just split screen to 4 squares
Optionally we can invent shorter headers to them
- Unit testing
- learning how to write good productional code with unit tests 😅 (it will be funny if they don't write them though, not really a small chance for that)
- Large code base
- learning to complete tasks in a large code base.
- Gathering requirements
- learning to communicate properly in order to get all task requirements and completing them into a right direction.
- Best practices
- learning best software development practices applicable to company environment.
no way not on one slide maybe if i had multiple but tbh i want to keep it three slides one for each question
In the sense that when you're working on something for a long time you start to lose sight of the overall goal and become hyper focused on details.
yeah but details are very important the wording is esp important considering slides are not meant to have a lot of words...
Being detail oriented is often an asset in engineering, but it's also important to be able to step back and look at the overall picture, put yourself in the shoes of somebody who hasn't been looking at it all day. I feel like several pieces of advice I've given you in this channel have been along these lines
Making PowerPoints is an artistic endeavor as well as a technical one
ok but wrong channel for that (use offtopic the next time)
i feel like considering you have your bachelors experience will be more important now
It depends on what field you go into.
AI/ML stuff is big right now, but that's PhD heavy; a master's might not even be enough. On the other hand if you end up in web development the experience is probably going to be more valuable.
Don't neglect the possibility of finishing your master's while working
Your decision should align with your career goals and preferences. Consider the practical experience you're gaining in your current job and weigh its value against the theoretical nature of your master's program. In the tech industry, hands-on experience often holds significant weight, but some roles may benefit from advanced degrees. It's worth evaluating your long-term aspirations and how each option contributes to them. Additionally, seek advice from professionals in your desired field to gather diverse perspectives.
We answered at the same time 😭
In general, education is worth more than experience.
But the implication here is that you should not aim for a bsc job with a masters, in which case, why having a masters in the first place?
A masters will help you go deeper in topics and open more doors. Whether these doors are of interest to you is a different matter
a masters is great for applied AI/ML. For research a phd would be best
Makes sense.
Where are you from? This is crucial to answer your question corectly
Okay my follow-up advice then is to look for Swedish people and to ask them the same question 😄 I don't know exactly how the Swedish market and job culture is. What I know is that a lot of advice on the internet is not applicable to various European countries (I live in one of them as well).
Hello all. I am a new python learner and I am planning to become a python developer (switching from 15+ years exp in graphic designing), this world is so new to me, as a beginner, and to find the first job, what should I learn to be job ready? Also how much would I expect as a starting salary
Starting new with no relevant degree nor experience is hard. Can you somehow leverage your existing experience in graphic design to make a lateral move?
as a beginner, and to find the first job, what should I learn to be job ready?
Depends what your career goals are and what you want to get into. But if you are just starting, you are too new to be thinking about getting a (good) job in programming.
how much would I expect as a starting salary
Again, depends. But this one will depend on time you spend learning. If you just take a code monkey position, it can be something like 60k-70k. But if you actually spend the time to learn the trade, it will be closer to 90k-120k. Some people get paid more, some less. Locality also has a play in this ... etc etc.
So first I would start by defining what your goals are and your expected timelines. From there, a more clear picture can be painted for you
You may expect to take a few years to learn and build experience, so don't quit your day job yet. You'll be competing for entry level jobs with people who do have relevant degrees and project portfolios. Precise salaries vary widely by location.
Thanks @white relic and @upper iron . Really helpful answers. I am more inclined towards machine learning and tool development. I am developing some simple tools to help me in my graphic designing. Like automating a few things. I would definitely want to enter a field where I can create tools for my current line of work.
Tooling and ML are very different. But yes, tooling is a great route to go. Just keep making tools for you and your co-workers. (also how dare there be another Joshie in this server
)
Ah sorry, I tagged the wrong Joshie. Yes. I am trying to build my way up through tools and then slowly move to ML
ML is hard to get into. And it has a lot of potential. But it also requires a lot more time to learn everything you need to know. So keeping your day job and learning programming through tools is a good route to go
the l3harris interview was very interesting
How did it go?
they were like yeah we’re building radios for the military and using oracle ERP systems to do so
Thank you. I will do that. Thanks Joshie.
they asked tons of questions, i don’t even remember all of the ones they asked me but i did have responses to each one. a lot more improvised compared to the uhg interview, it wasn’t just standard behavioral questions
they kinda were like yeah i think with your project management experience you could make a solid contribution to this team
Great! I hope you get an offer.
thank you!! it would be really great. i also asked the security clearance question you mentioned and he said the role im applying to doesn’t require one
That's good. Be aware that not having one will limit your mobility within the company. (Knew people who had this problem due to not being eligible)
that’s not good…
But that's not a problem unless you plan to make l3harris part of your long term career. You've got time to think about it.
that’s true
I'm talking about a bachelor's degree and yeah it's unusual alright. It's hard to explain but I do have it.
And by time I mean like at least several years. Plenty of time to get some solid experience and find another job
It took special planning to get it that fast
in the mean time, i guess i’ll continue applying to other jobs and seeing what happens
Many people who overachieve as students report being kind of lost when they hit the "real world". I imagine in your case COVID might have also come into play?
Yeah probably covid came into play
I'm bored and being nosy, no need to provide details
But did you have a question to ask?
why did you major in CS?
linked lists can be annoying, but I am close to mastering them little devils
the interviewer that spoke to me at uhg was like idk if you're getting lucky or anything like that but i think it's amazing how many internships you've gotten
It is a bit surprising
i was like i think it speaks to my dedication and perseverance to try and get practical experience, it definitely took luck too
i also mentioned how u of waterloo kinda inspired me to get as many internships as i could (which is true)
Hi!
It's the wrong place to ask as this channel is about careers.
You may want to ask in #python-discussion or check out #❓|how-to-get-help
I just started my journey as a Computer Science student. I was wondering if I can get advice from professionals in the industry for a good Tech Stack
Would learning the MERN stack along with C# and Asp.net be good? I don't really like C++ because its too advanced and I think its hard to get entry level jobs with python
If you are starting, tech stacks don't matter.
Focus on the fundamentals and the learning
If anything, don't specialize in a tech stack because the field is so much bigger
this isnt a python specific question but, what A levels are best for the computer science field
Kinda depends what you wanna get into.
Sciences are generally good as not only do they have maths but they are the most likely to have a computing component.
Cause computing 3D models of cells and a ML model of human interactions are 2 very different parts of computing
could somebody review my resume for me?
You can post it here (with private information blacked out)
Hey all, I came from a non-tech background and earned a data analytics certification where I worked as a DA for 8 months. Now I'm looking to expand into Data Engineering. I know SQL and basic Python. Can anyone provide some advice on how to get into this market?
I just boosted!
The simplest advice would be to look up data eng job ads and get an idea of what they ask for and learn that
sql and python is definitely on the right track
That gets so crazy. There's about 40 tools that all handle overlapping tasks. And they want you to know half of them. But then the next job desc asks that you know the other half.
The opposite is also true... (Not from the us) Since the tests were either automated, or more anonymized
The students that were preferred by teachers, "somehow" they were scoring less than their average...
Can u list.sort() by smallest words to biggeat word
list.sort(key = len) should work
This channel is for career discussion
Damn i didnt add that 😔
Sorry i just didnt wanna open a thread for a simple question my bad
I don't know how I ended up here thought this was #python-discussion lol mb
It happens, nbd
It is what it is, find the most common tools and go through them with simple projects
I've been trying to focus on what actually interests me and what I feel is needed in the businesses in my area. Data capture and transformation is what I feel is needed most, so I want to go down that avenue. But no one is "hiring" for this role in my area. My belief is that this role is outside the budget for many of the local businesses, but new tools are coming out everyday that make ETL and IoT data captures more accessible and affordable. So maybe I can specialize in low cost, high quality data systems and offer them to companies for a fraction of what they think it would cost.
Please let me know if this makes sense or if I'm delusional.
hi
so for my current internship i'm developing problem management courses for execs at the company
it's like a #1051603408597024828 moment but for an internship
Somehow I feel Executives shouldn't need an intern to teach them how to handle problems
Not that I doubt the value of your work
i absolutely agree with you. i'm an "internal biz consultant" for the company. whatever that means lol
how am i supposed to be a consultant at the ripe age of 22? 😭
hello?
i done goofed and said let's meet thursday not realizing thurday is thanksgiving
Everybody does that
I have coworkers in other countries where Thanksgiving is just Thursday and sometimes it's hard to remember that they may be in the office but I won't
i came up with an idea to include a case study in the course to show how problem management works. my manager loved the idea
hi, any tips on how to do white boarding ? like, writing out the algo on paper as diagrams before implementing the solution. I can sketch out stuff of course, just wondering if there is any standard way to do it in CS
I think it differs from person and company mostly. Although I rare do whiteboarding for a specific algo, I love Excalidraw for doing high-level sketches of how the system and code interacts with one another.
Otherwise for more technical stuff, Lucid chart is fairly common
Fwiw, managers and business people in general -love- case studies. If you don’t already, start reading Harvard Business Review… some great content.
awesome. yeah my idea is to take a couple servicenow tickets, anonymize the logs, and then have the people taking the course develop questions just like how problem managers develop questions on their calls
city of atlanta only let me ask like one question
the interview was kinda bad ngl
one of the interviewers were like what's your experience with developing clean drinking water systems and CCTV?
is it possible to get job after career break of 2-3 years in IT ?will HR reject the application if they see my job gap ? any tips to get a job? already have 5 years of experience.
if any HR here pls advice
it would depend on the reason for the gap. a gap on its own is not disqualifying
i was like i don't have any experience in that, but i am confident that i can learn quickly by talking with SMEs, asking questions, and adapting
need to give an example of when you learned something new quickly
i gave an example of how quickly i learned power bi for the dashbboard i built last summer
and how i did it
We have a whiteboard in our office space and we use it all the time. It's not something you need to "learn" I think, just a natural way of communicating. There's no real "rules" 🙂
before you guys went to grad school, did y'all have conversations with your profs who you wanted reccs from?
i'm going to grad school in a couple years (not immediately) so i don't know when to have that convo
I understand that. Reason I ask is because for example in physics, there are canonical ways of drawing certain entities, for example you'll usually draw an arrow to represent a vector.
dang, northrop grumman keeps saying no to me
Do you have a geographical location you're looking in? (defense contractors being dense in certain locations, just curious)
not really, i'm open to working anywhere in the US
sensible
yeah i figured i'd keep my options open
Ideal scenario... More then one prof already loves you and wants to work you with before you even apply to the program.
More typical... By the time you choose which offer to accept, you at least have some names in mind of profs you might like to work with and have had some contact, preferably an in person meeting
Caveat that my grad degrees are in social science but I think it works vaguely the same in other fields like CS
hmm, ok. yeah i do have some professors in mind i'd like a recommendation from that like me
Sorry, I misread the question, I was thinking about profs in the graduate program you want to enter...
For recommendation letters... Yes, the more you can discuss the letter with them the better. You might not need to meet, but I would let them know what you want them to discuss and convey in your letter.
got it
There's UML and ERD and so on but those conventions can be hard to grok, especially for non-tech folk, so I simplify my whiteboard notation to words, arrows and cardinalities.
hello, i have a strong knowledge of python and now can t decide in which are to continue(web dev or data analyst) do you have any tips?
If masters, I don’t think it matters tremendously. Just get a couple of refs now and file it away. (But my experience is solely that of doing masters while working)
got it, will do. thanks for the advice.
Yes. I knew that grad school was my goal so after a point of building a relationship with someone, I made it clear I wanted a letter of rec and asked them if they would be willing to write me one when the time came. You can always reach out to them later. But it is easier while you are near them
word
Yeah I'm gonna stick with arrows and stuff. Has been working out.
I have now reached the 100 leetcodes milestone
"squares and arrows"
everytime i see an interesting video my body screams "quit your job" cause I know I'll never get to do anything interesting engineering wise
Well, that's generally a good idea, provided you find a new and more interesting job first
hola buenas tardes, algun programador de python de argentina?
Hola, creo que tienes que hablar Ingles
Hello, good afternoon, any python programmer from Argentina?
thanks you
guys, i need help deciphering something
what on god’s green earth does this mean?
"Hey we aren't ghosting you, we are still waiting on the decision from the hiring manager"
Is my impression
pretty quick response considering i interviewed with them yesterday
that looks very templatey ¯_(ツ)_/¯
agreed
In that case it could be the generic post-interview email
so i'm not getting my hopes up then
sounds like they have a few more interns in the pipeline and will make a final decision
It could be because you only did okay, or they really want to interview a few more they already had scheduled
probably after thanksgiving, i'll get some sample rejection email 😦
this is worse than not hearing back at all
you didn't get rejected
i know, not yet at least
i'm just going to write a generic thank you email to the recruiter CC'd on the email
feel free to highlight some cool interactions and appreciation
thank you emails that don't feel generic always have an impact
yep, will do. thanks for the advice!
I take this as a positive sign. Feel good about yourself.
thanks!!
i think the "let me know if you have any offers" part is promising
The company has no incentive to pretend they're still thinking about it when they've already made a decision. The only reason to say they're still thinking about whether to hire you is that they're still thinking about it.
And yep, that corroborates that they don't want to miss out on a chance to hire you.
i feel like artistically i have it down / the theme etc. but in terms of wording i need to like edit that a bit
so let's see what happens after thanksgiving
Sounds like a normal notification that decision will be made quickly. It means literally what it means.
In dev cycles at least, people are often having multiple competing offers. This letter was helping to ensure they will be able to catch u first if it is within your desires
Word choice, how much detail to put in, jokes, all have as much art to them as the visual aspects do. To say nothing of the performance (delivering the presentation)
^ reply bamboozled by discord ui
@fringe sphinx are you around
If you're going to ping someone to get their attention, at least tell them the thing you were planning to tell them once you have it.
I was gonna ask him if I should follow a masters in CS instead
You said you wanted to do nlp for Turkish, right? Yes, you probably should.
so not DS but CS? @peak halo My CS masters program doesnt have NLP tho
But the data science one does?
yup let me show you the CS program I got in https://catalog.njit.edu/graduate/computing-sciences/computer-science/ms/index.html
https://www.njit.edu/academics/degree/ms-artificial-intelligence-online omg their AI masters have that one! Should I do masters in AI?
Opportunities don't wait - and the M.S. in Artificial Intelligence can help you make sure you're ready to take yours. As there continues to be major breakthroughs in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), industries have a greater demand for graduates to design sophisticated AI systems. The M.S. in AI from NJIT will teach students how to use...
I'm not sure. Getting a master's in AI as a distinct thing from getting a master's in CS is a new concept.
It remains to be seen if those programs are good or if employers perceive them as valuable.
Yeah I will do CS Masters
For what it's worth, my first degree is one that employers don't know by name. I kind of like it because it gives me the space to sell it as whatever I want (within reason).
I personally did a MSc AI afterwards but it's a 30+ year old program with strong "brand recognition" here. That also has merit. I don't know if that's the case for the one you're considering.
just asking, is anybody here finding data analyst an alienating job?
not meaning to offense but, since i study to become a data analyst, i feel estranged from the people around me.
I really don’t have an opinion on this. I’m CS and in data engineering, so CS makes sense in my world. Just depends on where you want to take your career.
hi new friends
people always recommend JS and Python as a first language. I have been told that it's hard to secure a job using Python as a self taught dev with no CS degree (the person who gave me this advice is the CTO of a relatively successful tech company).
so I'm kind of curious, for most people who learn python first, are they actually securing positions using python as a first role? or is it more a case of learn python just because it's a nice first language to learn but end up having to do web dev/JS most of the time as a first role anyway? if not, what type of entry level python positions can a self taught dev realistically secure?
In this channel, the usual response is: the clearest path to a SWE job is through a CS degree… in other words, we agree with that CTO. Remember that the job is SWE, not ‘Python programmer’. Just like a carpenter is not hired as a ‘hammer swinger’. It takes more than one skill to land a full time programming job.
Most of the time, you will be expected to know or learn multiple languages, the difference is once you've learnt one language it is much easier to learn the second, third, etc...
In my first job I was doing: Py, JS, C#, Java, TS, Rust and Ruby
(Agree with CF8): as far as jobs you could look for: there are many different entry points in tech. Help desk, operations, and QA have lower pre-requisites and can be used to get a foothold. Some people find roles at smaller companies who need web devs, or people to work on smallish problems: this requires a bit of networking and luck, in addition to preparation.
I need help selecting elective course next year ...
Can anyone help specify group and which group to select
I m kinda not interested in network essentials
What are you taking/want to be in the future
Backend developer
I m intrested in both
But all it goes down to future like are they worth like will that have value in future and job options and etc
Thank you both for the replies @fringe sphinx and @lapis wind
Actually, I am a self taught developer, after getting the advice from the CTO I know I did end up moving to JS and stuck with it, which led me to securing my first web dev role.
I did initially start learning to code with Python though, and I'd really like to pick it up again but it wouldn't benefit me in my current role. I'm more curious about what sort of entry level roles could I realistically go for where Python is actually used.
If I wasn't fussed about the language/technology I wouldn't bother and could just stick with php (which is actually what I code most in now).
Probably Web scripting, cloud computing, and (unfortunately) network lol but don't just take my advice just do some research
Didn't u said all 3
Like does group A include mobile devloper if i m right or web developer ?
Here is list of subject followup to it's next sem
If you have web dev skills, it seems natural to do some full stack work if that interests you. Perhaps a Python flask backend for a web app?
Group A seems the worst. Group B and C are way better. I don’t do network stuff at all. But having had taken a class in it; it helps to understand how the things I do works. And what technologies are out there. I wouldn’t look at this list as “what is the most marketable” because electives won’t get you to market. (You need to do extra things on your own on the side). With that said, A seems to be offering the worst options imo
I m intrested in mobile development
People sayin A isn't good
I m not interested in c
It’s not that A is horrible. It just also doesn’t seem like it would be the best use of time.
Then just take group A
It is the most backend oriented.
PHP courses are backend, even mobile is still software engineering problem the most close to web development (mobile is just mobile front for web hehe)
Second group with machine learning
And third group as QA look to me far less relevant
I could recommend learning not PHP for backend though eventually

i kinda agree with this
i mean you're not supposed to memorize solutions, but you kind of do after solving them for a while
the same way you memorize the keys on your keyboard
I dont think this is any new take
meh for me it kinda is i only started grinding leetcode recently
I thought you were targeting PM, did you get google tpm interview?
i'm targeting more analyst roles, PM is kinda hard to break into fresh out of college. biz analysts that can code are nice
they ask leetcode for analyst? also did you get amazon offer?
nothing from amazon 😦
I just interviewed for ML SWE intern role, I hope I get to the next round, I told em I was playin around with fortniet custom game, and attempted to make valorant aimbot in python 😹
but but i did interview for uhg and l3harris this week
uhg?
big healthcare company HQ in minnesota
Are you targeting a specific TC or just a new grad job?
i'm targeting healthcare IT roles
how's it going
i got ft return offer lmao, but I am interview for mlswe intern role 😭
boujee
i can relate to the rejections
Is the jane street dream dead
Nah
i was about to say, isn't this the quant or rope guy?
Or was it a σσ dream
it was citadel dream, got rejected again after perfect oa 🛌
nice 🎉
@near ocean whats your TC btw?
that's... quite a question
Im in a different country lol
ofc
still curious, i thought you were in london or sum sht
Yea
lol when i was little i used to ask my dad how much he made and he'd be like pennies
So what is it, Im curious
Im on 45 rn
an hour? a year?
450k/y?
A year, its salary not hourly
my boss had the audacity to ask me how much i'd make at my new internship and i just said i'm not willing to disclose that
why not, should've told em
none of their business tbh
No reason to tell your past employers anything
bingo
i mean if you're open about it, i dont see no harm
If i made this kind of money i wouldnt be on discord rn
why not? You can still be a loser and be rich
Cause i'd probably retire and be on an island by now
wait your current tc is 45k in london, london is lcol right
London is super hcol
Correct answer, well handled.
To be fair, as an employer/hiring manager I do want to know: I want to know when my comp packages are too far off. I’ve had to correct a few times
true
Maybe they were willing to give you return with competitive pay 🤔
they didn't want to raise my wage by $3, i doubt they'd give a return with competitive pay
You asked for 3 dollar raise?
they deadass said we'll raise it by $1, you can pay for your gas money better and maybe take your girlfriend out on weekends
Not a good idea to entertain counteroffers
Especially in startups
i didn't ask for one, they mentioned it in the summer before i returned from my intership during dinner
yes i got wined and dined minus the wine
1 dollar raise 💀
You returned twice?
returned once
Are you in EU or sum
Yea thats what I mean, 2 internship at the same company
i joined, left for a big healthcare company, and rejoined. yep.
why?
they said i could leverage my experience that i gained from the big healthcare company at their company and i thought why not
did you get paid more at least
where, big healthcare company? yeah
no, when you went back
so um they kinda dodged me for a couple weeks and then "forgot" to increase my pay after we had the conversation about it. i had to walk into HR's office and ask why my wage wasn't increased
i found it super shady
yeah that's not great
it was also super dry administrative work, but that's basically project management in a nutshell
from my understanding half of project management is babysitting people
but it's very hard to babysit people when you have no experience of their domain and exactly what they do
that's my tedtalk on project management
I concur
hey, we don't do recruiting here
Ohh sorry
honestly, follow your passion first when i started i was making 0 a month now im at the millions level thanks to python and my family.
pay for your gas money better and maybe take your girlfriend out on weekends
what is this boomer speak lmao
are you serious, not even $3. this is wild
wild
ik, they were like we’ll meet up after the holidays for a performance evaluation to consider this further
yeah this is not a good look
bro you need to get out of there
dw dw dw i got out, the big healthcare company gave me a return internship offer when i was at italy in the summer
i’m chilling now
they were like hey, we really liked your work at the previous internship you did with us so we’d like to see you back with us again
...to McDonald's?
lolll
uhg is making me anxious, but i guess i have to wait till after thanksgiving. nothing from l3harris as of yet
damn that's good money
but it also depends on how much the CoL is in rochester, and idk if i even got the job sooo
and it says "low confidence" too
i don't know how much uhg is going to give me or if i got that offer
it's..... not great
for a new grad?
idk i was expecting something along the lines of 75K
i meant the COL in rochester, you'll get a good bang for your buck depending on where in rochester you choose to live
ohhhhh my bad i misinterpreted
that's alright, i didn't explain clearly
would you choose a development program that leads to a full time job over a full time job straight away? i'm kinda debating it if it comes down to that
that sounds like an intership that leads to a FT job
the development program is also full time, it's a two 6-month fulltime program
You know you’re an overthinker, right? You’ve had 4 internships: you’ll be fine.
yeah i try not to it just happens
and i had 5 internships which just further proves your point 😭
would've had 7 if i did the textron and UHG one
has anyone used this Braintrust thing? There is a freelance job that seems interesting.
yeah i just need to focus on getting the slides in as they are do this friday.. i will practise the performance after i submit the slides
is this bad?
how about this?
let me know if the wording is off...
I have to present this at assessment centre - they told us to come prepared answering these questions
I am an electrical/Electronics student but got lots of interests in software... i have been learning python for the past few years but feels like i have only learnt little.. i'm confused on what to focus on... can some one give some advise.. thanks
focus on learning algorithms and datastructures and problem solving skills... programming language does not matter end of the day... best of luck.
hello friend where can i get roadmap for this or you got any course link on youtube and i'd figure out
It's been a while for me, so not a 100% sure, but geeksforgeeks.com and hackerrank.com were good resources to get started on these things
What if I put docker instead of Jira, and linux instead of design pattern cus ihave more knowledge about the former...?
I was only bringing up design pattern – cus I did not do design properly before –and I wanted to mention how I am learning from my past mistakes – cus that will look good?
But then that probably also makes me look bad having that mistake to begin with?
What do you want to build? The best way to learn programming is through projects that interest you or solve a problem you care about.
This feels too much like "I know my way around a screw driver" rather than "I can build spaceships"
why not use a set for skillset. that'd be much more appropriate
man i love eightfold ai for recruiting systems
on top of that, my boss (the one who i actually worked with) was like maybe your attention to detail and the way you contribute at work is the reason why that big healthcare company never called you back
so not like they were particularly nice to me
just curious, why does it say ordering lunches under program analyst?? i'm deleting this role from my saved immediately lmao
if u got a little time to ask my doubt plz #1177037517124538488
rejected by goldman sachs for a PM analyst role, whoopsie
i'm beginning to think it takes a blood sacrifice to get in
also, they asked how many years of experience i got after my undergrad degree. i think that's pretty much a hint it's not entry level even tho they didn't explicitly write YoE required
this question right here
Right this moment, unlikely, but if you search the chat, I feel like there has been someone. You may have better luck on LinkedIn
You may also ask your question directly in case someone from Morocco stumbles upon it
Ok thanks
I honestly would not mind as long as I could order any lunch for me for free
get some of that daily sushi action
sounds more like a secretary than a project management job
lol
yeah fuck that lmao
remember traveling to a customers main office (in dubai), the top guy of the department always ordered lunch for every1, was amazing, I ate kebabs every day
im very easy to bribe
love kebabs
indian food in general is top notch imo
my ancestors basically kickstarted the discoveries cuz of indian spices
as an indian, happy to hear that
america exists today cuz we wanted spices
Hi, im a new at python and i want to learn with this course of udemy ('100 Days of Code: The Complete Python Pro Bootcamp for 2023'), do you think that it is good to start?
OOOH
Ceberuss go for cs50 python..
Does anybody have any reading recommendations for a hobbyist programmer that's trying to transition to a professional programmer? I have no formal CS training and recognize that I have a lot of blind spots in my knowledge, but I'm not really sure where to go to correct it. I see people talking about things like Big O notation and ASTs, and I have a surface-level knowledge of these things, but I feel like I'm misisng out on a lot.
"Introduction to Algorithms" would be a great start! It does a great job at covering the fundamentals
I do have a question for the people here! So I wanted to be a mechanical engineer, but last year I did some coding and loved it now I want to be a software engineer. Is it okay for me to not really any code when I get into college? And will it make it harder to get internships freshman year due to the lack of knowledge?
Are you a first year mechanical engineering student right now?
why not changing your major?
It's relatively common for college students to change their major first year
i changed my major
indeed. quite common
@smoky quest I really appreciate the suggestion. Normally I'm the type of person that would sit back and wait for a few different recommendations so that I could compare them and "pick the best one," but for whatever reason I think I am just going to go with it tonight. Thank you!
which field is easier to get into data anylitcs or software develope

Does anyone understand Python?
this is the #career-advice channel, you question might be better suited for #python-discussion
P.S. yes, some people understand Python in a server dedicated to Python
no, i don't think anyone understands python /s
I'm also interested in learning the language and I'm taking a course with almost 100 hours on Udemy. What books would you recommend here?
What’s that?
@vapid jay this is the career discussion channel, so whatever your code does probably isn't on-topic here. But if you have to say that it's a "very innocent script" and that it's for "educational purposes", that pretty much guarantees that you shouldn't discuss it on this server.
(and in the off-chance that you're serious, people usually only say that scripts are innocent and for educational purposes when they are malware.)
that would be for #cybersecurity, not here (career discussion)
Where can I practice interview questions to become a data scientist or a data analyst. And how important are DSA concepts to become one of these?
Oh you're only allowed to take a group
not a course for each group my bad
Yes
I still cannot understand what to choose
Group a or b
A makes the most sense but is kinda bad
C you said you don't want to take
B Machine learning is quite literally AI (I've taken a pre college thing an it was just boring as batshit)
also blockchain and nfts like I don't know you do what you want
B is cloud computing so is their scope ?
And a Why it's is kinda bad
DSA problems are pretty important in most interview processes and you can practice them on sites like leetcode
Cant help with DS or DA interviews
DSA is my fav 🙂
Kaggle seems popular for data science practice / portfolio projects, but not interview prep per se
@twilit kraken brother can u elaborate about a
Hi guys, sorry if I'm being blind, but is there a place to post job opportunities here?
No
Shame, thanks 🙂
Remember, two of the courses are just intros/half so you might not learn as deep(like halfway there but not exactly
that's like the only thing, but otherwise you should be fine/its a good choice
To be honest, whatever you want (b is boring and useless as shit (blockchain))
Is their any future for a
And people say their is many opportunities for b( cloud computing)
Ok personally Im going to become and engineer right
I pick my courses orienteered towards engineering, Im only picking engineering because everybody needs engineers and offers good pay, and that it isn't as restrictive as other jobs
If you are passionate about a job, then go for it, it will allow you to do good either way
if you are just there for the money, like you said, go for the ones with potential
Its more of what you are looking for in a job
where is blockchain mentioned?
Channel description has links to two job boards
It is
where?
Isee
I will be picking a ig
Intrest matters
It's in next sem
i didn't see it mentioned in the screenshots you sent
Hi all. I enjoy CS a lot but I'm a terrible student. I need an internship to graduate but my GPA is holding me back. I'd love to hear how any of you guys got your foot in the door.
how low are we talking? below a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale? also the first step is to not call yourself a terrible student
Anyone else notice the amount of master degrees these days for entry level roles? Almost as common as bachelors.
what roles are you referring to? bc ik data science gets very competitive with that
most entry level roles doing anything in the field of IT
i bought linkedin premium to see more data. tons of seniors and masters degrees competing for 60k jobs
60k in the US
that means you have to leverage the internships you have/gained while you were in college
internships mean nothing against people with 10+ years (seniors)
they show initiative and make companies want to hire/invest in you
no
lol what
i give u 60k. you can hire a candidate with 10 years work experience and a masters degree in the field or a new grad with a bachelors and a few internships. who is more qualified?
You shouldnt be competing with devs with 10years exp
It just means youre applying to the wrong ads
yeah i agree with mar
purchase linkedin premium and review the data
lot of seniors applying to entry level roles
Why would seniors do that?
LinkedIn is lying to you
or more accurately, the data linkedin has doesn't necessarily accurately reflect the person
I'm pretty sure linkedIn classes me as senior despite only being employed for 3 years
or at least that is what it wants me to apply to
You may not be based in America. In America the interest rates are high which is bad for creating new contracts. There is also war and other macro economic issues. Then you also have post covid layoffs which actually exceeded the dotcom bubble by a significant margin. Its pretty bloody out there
It seems more like you are looking for reasons to not bother applying?
youre assuming negative things about me
By america do you mean the US?
Like idrk what you want people to tell you, other than, people with actual 10 years of experience definitely are not applying to entry level positions if that experience is anyway meaningful
If the economy is bad for the US how would you describe it about the rest of the world lmao
yes, although Canada isnt doing to well either from what ive seen. North America in general
Canadas housing is REAL bad
Its linkedins stats. you can confront them about it.
I don't need to 😅 Because I am not basing my choice of applying to somewhere or not based on LinkedIn's guesses at statistics
Can you show an example job ad where seniors with 7+ years exp are applying?
linkedin doesn't even tell you the truth of how many people are applying to a position
IDEK how they classify people tbh
But like, I am not senior, yet 90% of the job 'recommendations' are for senior positions, so I wouldn't trust any of LinkedIn's statistics
In a similar vein as to why the salary predictions GlassDoor do, often do not line up with reality
I imagine its because ads for senior are the most common, there is high demand and low supply for them
This is the first thing I saw. This was posted 3 hours ago
Probably, which is why it makes even less sense for seniors to apply to entry level positions when deman for seniors is far higher
as person which interviewed people for middle rank
I can say, u can get for 3-5 years of supposed experience from awesome middle+ person
to.... a lot, a lot of beginning juniors
So.. each person has different quality to their years
Suppose I could post more, there super easy to find. I found that one the first job I clicked
Have you considered that the senior/manager person is from outside the country from somewhere with low wages?
Or not even an actual person, a bot?
or indian with vpn
I do think you are reading into these stats a bit too much 😅
Which tbf, isn't your fault since linkedin does everything in its power to try convince you to buy it
but take the stats with a pinch of salt
True, but hr for the most part is going to glance and go huh.. no yoe... oh this person has 10 yoe...
I cant even see where you're getting this 10 years number from tbh
Sure. You win some you lose some.
they don't have any other means to assess it 😅
Unless running neural network to guess based on available profile
If i add my hobby years of experience I also have 10+ years 😎 (which is a thing people do)
They do have some AI's in place actually. As a user you can have an AI write some of your linkedin profile
Its not linkedin's job to assess seniority, so no point in trusting it
The masters degree thing is valid though. You could say people are lying, but that woulden't be seen by the employer till after the interviews
SEO = Search Engine Optimization for LinkedIn 😊
(The famous most optimized Angelina Lee)
lot of denial about statistics here. Very interesting
instant hire
Something something AI, something something LLM, something something cryptocurrency blockchain engineer
We dont know where these numbers are coming from and companies have been known to lie
Why are you trusting them?
spread Herpes STD to 60% of intern team
Phi Beta Phi - fraternity record for most vodka shots in one night
A social skill I acquired is to not accuse people of lying unless I have something significant to gain from it.
War encourages spending and investments, especially in tech. High interest rates encourage spending and investments (in fact, the reason rates were raised was exactly to encourage spending and investments). The unemployment rate is only slightly higher today than it was in 2019 or 2022, and it's currently much lower than it was in 2020 and 2021. I think you're misinterpreting the macro economics here.
this isn't a person though, this is a company trying convince you to buy their subscription
I don't follow you on high interest rates encouraging spending.
People and companies have lied for much less than $30 a month
VPN marketing alone should be a good enough example of sketchy marketing used to make something seem more valuable than it is
That's the point of high interest rates. They make it cost money to horde money, or to put it in a bank - you lose purchasing power over time, so you're incentivized to spend money now, since you know that same amount of money will buy less in the future
I do have personal experience as well with the masters degree. I've been getting a lot more interviews since I enrolled in my masters program.
Cant say I share in that experience
It does not cost money to horde money due to interest rates. Thats inflation you are thinking of.
As far as the time value cost of money goes. A lot of home owners are actually electing to not move due to interest rates. They see their current asset appreciation as higher than what they could get if they bought a new house at a high interest rate.
er, you're right, I did mean inflation
sure, but if that exerts any pressure at all on the job market, it reduces supply for workers (fewer who are willing and able to relocate), which drives salaries up
we can extrapolate this to large contracts. Large contracts for software are about the same cost of a house. If a business could take out a loan for 8% interest or 3% interest which one do you think they are choosing?
I don't think I follow... are you talking about the bond market here? That it's harder for companies to raise capital by selling bonds than it used to be, because the interest costs more than it did a few years back?
I dont think any of this has any relation to whether seniors are applying for junior roles
Theres nothing stopping them from doing so even in a great economy
yeah. if a company hires someone with 10 years of experience for an entry level job, then it wasn't an entry level job
The cost of projects directly impacts the employment rate of developers. Developers work on a lot of project based work.
That's why I say macro economics are impacting seniors applying for entry level roles.
and I think that the fact that someone has 10 years of experience doesnt mean s/he is a senior, because you can stuck in one project during this time, and do the same thing every day and not make any progress as a programmer
Idk why people are so hung up on this junior / senior thing. It's just marketing.
Titles, by and large, are marketing imho. "senior web engineer" (as seen in the screenshot) sounds better than front end developer or "web master". You do it to get candidates. If you're good enough for the sr psoition you'll get it, idt there's a threshold for YOE.
Past titles matter on your resume 🙂
Webmaster. That's a term I haven't heard for a while.
Case in point, it's not "sexy" 😄 Everyone is senior XX engineer now
I'm pretty sure if you write "software engineer" on your resume and then clarify what you did you're going to be fine. What you did trumps what you're called. Some people never have the maturity to be a de facto "senior" and some reach it after a couple of years That's what matters imo
Place I work made an explicit decision not to use those words in titles, and I think it makes sense.
What if your job title says consultant, on your resume you say software engineer, and the person you interviewed with says you failed the background check because you lied about being an engineer. You were a consultant.
Again, titles are marketing (and some times bureaucracy). I interviewed for an ML/AI position a while back at a consultancy. When we were going through the contract and the comp they said "Oh by the way, on the top you see your title is software engineer. We just call everyone that writes any code SWE for organisational reasons. You're free to use a more specific one in your external communication."
If you're afraid of "lying" Software engineer (consultant) or consultant - software engineer works
The example I gave was a real world example that I experienced 🙂
I’ve read this thread twice, I have no idea what we’re talking about. I think I’m in 🦃 coma.
started as macro economics impacting jobs and then digressed to job titles
@fringe sphinx you would be a good person to ask, have you noticed an increase in the amount of masters degrees you've been seeing?
for entry level roles specifically
Out of curiosity, any countries outside the US that make a thing of Thanksgiving? A few years ago, I was shocked to see Thanksgiving recognized (celebrated?) in China.
Canada has Thanksgiving on a different date.
I haven’t seen it for entry roles, no… but I imagine what you’re thinking is more big tech where the company is desirable.
No, so I purchased linkedin premium and it shows me what degree level people have when they apply. I'm seeing A LOT of people with masters for entry level
I mean, I have seen masters for entry, but those are straight out of college
It’s like college apps where students are applying to dozen(s) of schools nowadays, perhaps people are applying everywhere? I’ve definitely seen far more unqualified apps than ever before. But for me, location and work authorization are the bigger filters.
Heres a random one
why are there 0% non-bachelors and non-masters applying ?
only 8 apps so far
Based msc applicants
I’m going to post an entry position next week, in fact (I’m a month or two behind). Now I’m curious. I hired my last off referral.
Masters grads are early careers people though
Masters grads can be early career! but having about half the apps holding a masters degree? Seems strange right?
I interpret this to mean: there are some seniors struggling to find a job, and they’re applying everywhere.
Hello
Same
Not really, it could not be the company's intention to hire an msc person
They cant control who is applying
I have seen some terribly unqualified senior candidates in years past, often people who worked in dead-end internal finance jobs…. That’s probably not helpful: there’s a particular large financial institution that just produced terrible engineers. “10 years of working on one page” type engineers (exaggeration)
Thats the companies intentions
Yes and they cant control who is applying to their ads
We are not discussing that 🙈
Youre pasting screencaps of stats of people applying 💀
My stance is that overall the markets a bit tougher resulting in seniors applying for more entry level roles.
of people applying to show that experienced people are applying for entry level roles
You dont really need linkedin premium stats to see the market is tougher
I wanted to quantify it
You dont know theyre experienced, you only know what linkedin tells you
I don’t come to the same conclusion: I believe the market for ‘good’ seniors is strong, and the market for juniors is a mess because it’s very hard to filter good from bad juniors.
How would you suggest juniors stick out to make it easier to filter?
One area is work authorization. I wish those stats you see disclosed authorization, my last LinkedIn post had a lot of international applicants.
Are you looking for advice or is this just discussion
It does
That doesnt necessarily show they have the right to work
So: masters students may be in an f1 visa and need sponsorship. Some may have worked a few years of OPT and need h1b, which puts them in a tough spot
It’s a fine question tho, I don’t really have data to tell one way or another so can’t say your conclusion is wrong either.
Really feels like Masters is the new Bachelors
But you got one already, right?
In progress
Im transparent about still being in progress as well. First thing I mention during every interview round introduction and also show it on resume.
OK it doesn't matter, as long as you get the highest grade in your CS class, and the university sees that, then you should be set, but specificically for com sci
..m
discord bot developers, how i can start learing discord bot developing?
i mean what i need?
in LATAM a lot of countries pretty much "emulate" or fake adopt certaina american holidays
how would u suggest to improve it?
dont want a lot of code it would become wordy the 'coding' stuff is just for visual aesthetics
@dreamy shadow oh hey its your catch phrase. also happy thanksgiving 🦃
thats good. it still gives you a leg up over all those undergrad students
like how some places follow bank holidays? thats interesting
is this actually really bad?
yes, but a lot of people in LATAM find it distasteful, essentially think the people who follow the holidays are well, stupid, and following the colonizers rather than be patriotic and remembering their countries histories
Who are you making this for? When I'm trying to read this, as someone who writes code, my eyes are all over the place. If HR needs to read this they might struggle even more (or potentially less!)
I'm looking at it thinking why does goals return placement, why are they indented like that.
understandable
Maybe if HR looks at it without a coder brain they won't get stuck on it. I think you should show it to a non-tech prson to see how they react to this.
Great engineers will know jira and git. But one is not a great engineer because they know jira and git.
So my suggestion would be to focus more on what you can do as an engineer, your strengths, your specialty. You can still keep the tooling around, but it should be small in a corner, not the main thing
placement is a type of year long internship in uk for 2nd yera students this is for a presentation in asssesment centre
I would probably align them. More boring but easier to read.
I would also be ready to be grilled on the why fo reach one
And they are all inward facing. Maybe having one goal for the company where you would be placed wouldn't hurt
thats cus the job description is very vague i can not make anything specific to company icl
Yes but should I read it as "placement goals" or should I read it as goal: void => Placement because I'm reading it at the second. Excuse me if I'm being pedantic
You can have an impact anywhere 🙂
i changed from jira to docker i mean
that's missing the point
the first - and no dw i appreciate it
As someone who codes I'm really inclined to read it as the second. I'm curious to see if the rest does as well. Otherwise you can safely ignore me!
ya others lmk.. the reason i have it as the first cus less words and this is a slide presentation.. so i need it visually readable..
Hello all
How are you guys getting jobs and internships? I've applied to well over 5,000 positions now and still havent gotten any offers.
Qualify that. No offers? Or no responses? Do you get any interviews or “LC” style evaluation questions?
I get recruiters reaching out to me, but after I have a conversation with them, they will either tell me that they found someone to fill the role or they just ghost me with no explanation
if they're all ghosting you, it's probably something you said, or something about your background
I remember last time you intended to get your resume reviewed; did that happen?
Whenever a recruiter reaches out to me with a role, I'll respond to them saying that I am interested in the role and send them my resume, so I dont think whatever I say causes them to ghost me
well, then it's your resume
My bad, I thought that I had already sent my resume here because I have sent it to a few other servers. I'll clean up my resume and send it here
everything is graphs o.o
graph theory goes hard
wait until you hear about the universal method to solve all the problems
could only find this, but sounds legit
there are technically two possible answers:
- If you wait long enough, all the problems resolve on their own
- You add another level of indirection
that's kinda dark
Not really. CPU/GPUs improved at a rapid pace (less so now for CPUs) and it's not unheard of to have problem become approachable 6 months later because of that.
Similarly, a lot of techniques regarding pointers, architecture or DSAs are about adding another level of indirection
the "indirection" one is a classic computer science adage
Oh okay, my mind just kinda went to the heat death of the universe. All problems have technically been solved cuz nothing exists anymore.
I've seen a cool talk about this. The dude was arguing the incoming fall of software, cuz all soft dev progress follows hardware improvements.
That seems a bit extreme, but there is a link
uhg's been looking at my linkedin 👀, but that doesn't mean much
It's below 3.0 but not by too much.
C's get degrees
so you need an internship as a requirement of graduation, but you're having trouble finding one, and you think it's because of your GPA. How are companies finding out your GPA?
hi
Hello
hey train?
hey there, is there anyone here with a linked in (that mentions their proficiency in app / web design / web development of any sort) who'd be willing to help me out with a small part of my project. i've an app design in figma and im required to get it evaluated by some professionals. you'd just be required to fill a small sheet (to rate the designs on the basis of their usability) and just send me your linkedin url (which id mention in my report) and id be very grateful if anyone could spare 10 mins for it. thanks
Hi everybody. Anybody would like to share how these days a CV for data science looks like?
Do you have seen good examples and would be happy to share them?
Hey, I want some advice on my current job. I work remote and I was thinking about moving country next year but keeping my job with same company. Just wondering is this something that is normal to ask/ okay ask? and how should I ask it if so?
I would say yes, but be aware of insurance issues when working outside the company's country. Maybe it is not possible because the company does not want their data in a foreign country
How do you mean insurance issues? The company does have people working from all locations of the world, if that helps
if you're emigrating then there probably will be issues with taxes and such
Reasons I heard why it is not possible (companies not having locations all over the wolrd): insurance issues and tax issues when their staff works outside
What if I am still paying the taxes of my original country? but just living in another country? This is one EU country to another EU country
Tax here for the company because officially working somewhere else could imply the company has now a location in the other country and has to pay tax. But it sounds like this is not applicable to your case
Matthew, good luck. Get a tax advisor.
It starts already for example how does one country regulates health insurance
Germany vs. France, two different systems. I think you pay tax there where you live 365/2+1 day
Never tried, but maybe it is worth to just move country every 182 days or so
Another question then, if you want move from one EU country to another EU country. But you dont know for how long, do you need to inform the country your moving about who you work for or?
Some countries have tax treaties, others not. I know Spain and France have one, but for example France and Germany not (at least for my relevant cases). I think you need to read a lot
"A 10 minute passion presentation. This can be on anything related to security and technology and should reflect your personal interests. " Do you think that doing a presentation on Monero for 10 minutes would be bad? This is for an entry level cyber security internship
Difficult question. In Germany, I guess you would have to pay health insurance there. Other EUR countries are more relaxes, they don't care if you are absent until a year
I'm putting this in career-discussion because it's money-related but I realize the fit might not be perfect, but: does anyone have suggestions for cheapest options for a very simple, very low-end, linux server I can SSH to? some online provider maybe?
What should I ask a tax advisor about? You mentioned tax advisor
It is not easy to navigate. Don't forget to do tax declaration than in both countries
Whats that mean lol
Which countries do mean
What is not to understand about "do tax declaration in both countries"?
Like I dont understand what tax declartion is, Ireland to Holland
Tax declaration is : Once a year you declare your income or any particilar expensive for which you want tax deduction
It could be worth to contact the tax administration in both countries and ask the. Some tax officers are helpful. I have personal no experience with those two countries in particular
i could give detailed answer for moving from my country X to country Y
but that will be answer only for my countries X Y
your country laws greatly affect jurisdical side of this problem
For my country:
We have changed tax residency in 6-12 months. (Technically in 6 months, but on practice up to 12 months)
We still remain foreign currency resident and some specific laws still remain attached to us.
If we work on a work contract from origin country, umm... that's a gray field that had laws changed multiple times for last year. from not paying taxes to paying 10 and 30% it was variating. (Origin country changes laws specifically in this case, or more exactly country within legal scope you have your working contract signed)
if we work on a same company from Entrepreneurship opened in origin country, enterprenership remains tax resident and we still pay taxes of origin country
if we open Entrepreneurship in new country, then we pay taxes of the new country, because enterpreneurship is legal entity of a new country.
how money is moved from entrepreneurship to your own pocket is a different array of issue, depending on origin of its country opening and your current country 😅 (in my situation things are complicated due to some... country specifics)
@wind siren Check out how health care is organised in those countries. Some counties require specific health insurance, others have a nation wide system where you could fly under the radar. You could use your EHIC EU health insurance card to get pain treatment and get even normal treatmeant, but you have to then do the admin with the country the card originates
I think I have EU health insurance card, so that should fine, no?
Technically yes, I guess, but would be still good to check how your current country handles these, for example, some countries want to be informed beforehand, others not
I think you have to do your home and read. Sorry
Can I ask a data scientist question: Would you include in your CV your publications?
I am trying contact tax adminstrators like you said
but thanks
Re Here I meant if you want regulate treatment outside your host country, not pain /acute treatment
.
Can I ask a data scientist question: Would you include in your CV your publications?
What you mean by regulate treatment?
Sorry, regular treatment
I would try not publish my cv online
Like a tooth crown for example
Mhm I get you, you mean get the proper treatment from doctors and dentists?
I meant, would you put your publications in your CV when applying for jobs in industry as data scientist? I have some publications
Yes. You will have to fill out a form that says I did not travel for this appointment to this other country. Just do it and stay a couple days extra.
Yes you should
Especially if you don't have much else (as a graduate)
Oh, yea sure why not
show your work bro
@silk rose Asking the tax adminstrator, I would have to be taxed in that country
How long can a CV be? I mean my list of publication is around 1 page long.
Usually 1 page, 2 page max
Than you I have to shorten it significantly and kick out all the jargon
You can share here (redact your personal info) if you like, people will critique. Make sure to note your country, there are regional differences
is this a bad introduction?
shld i just take out the 'instead of talking about ' sentence and just jump right into it with - currently? aka (not justifying my approach to the question? or mentioning it whatsoever and just saying it?)
hii i need helppp someone wanna talk??
I wouldn't have that. You're saying this over a slide that has the word "skills" prominently in the title, right? You don't need to justify your approach to the question and doing so weakens the answer
Just start with "currently I'm implementing..."
shld i put UML / class diagram instad of problem solving
cus im gonna be saying something like this
Problem solving sounds fine to me. UML isn't really a thing in my discipline so it wouldn't be something I'd mention, maybe that's different depending on industry
Maybe could be "Problem solving in/through software architecture"
I’d say just keep general problem solving?
o damn but i thot UML is prevelant with all OOP stuff
Also please use a resume format that can go through parsers @hidden bloom
Have not seen UML since leaving school
