they wont even let you do that
Law enforcement doesnt handle prisoners, thats dept of corrections
That's how bad the US prisons are

I feel like "Fuck the law" and "I hope I don't end up in prison" aren't exactly mutually exclusive...
Lmao
lmao
Gonna jaywalk right into a prison cell
lmao
lol
US law is horrible, I would rather die than be in solitary confinement
Alrighty
even worse torture chamber
True.
since in the modern world you need the internet for basic services
US is known to torture it's "terrorists"
Someone's watching too much tv methinks
instead of rehab them

Fix climate change and solve world hunger
imo the only way to have privacy is to not be too private yet not selling your data for $0.1
make a fully open source country
open source country
Get on a spaceship to arrakis and become a worm
ay brad
Spoiler alert
add that as an ot name please
lets plan the open source country??
open source country ftw
That is pretty good
if im gonna be really rich thats thats what i wanna do
its gonna be fully sustained
no need for money
or maybe do a credit system
according to what they provide to the system
like fixing leaks
or soemthing
money only needed initially
but there is no use for credits either
everyone lives in the same condition
if you want to change how your house is
you gotta diy
yea a lot of diy
Python Discord is basically a country at this point
We even have postcards
wow, that's old
yeah, i remember that one
And if you still doubt that we’re a country, here’s the pydis flag in front of the UN
Yeahh, that was from our “generation” of staffers, so to speak. Pretty recent
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
If I could succeed without failing, why wouldn't I do that
So we are political 😏
I would never give you up
i know this is false, but i wanna take this apart anyway
the lighting on the flag is so wrong, it isn't that bright on anything else in the picture
and the flag pole, which im assuming is metal, isn't showing the reflection of any part of the flag
the pydis flag shines automatically
and also, the flag is waving while the rest are not
The greatness within makes pydis glow like the sun
it generates its own wind
We have steel wires in it, just like the American flag on the moon landing
and the shadows on the flag are not from the surroundings
and also, the flag pole is lower, and is not straight like the rest
Haters gonna say it’s fake
dam, can't argue with that

@nova ember Did you see the video by the way?
Pydis is special. It’s situated in front of all the other flags, to show that it’s the supreme country. The Country among countries
I think not? Unless you’re referring to the legendary lemon ping video
"among" it's a country among us ?😳
Video of the launch
It's in the lounge
Ooohh, I’ll have a look
!server
Hmm
Whoa 345k
We have more people than Guam
143 helpers
Are we a monarchy
Trinarchy
Helper hivemind 😩
three owners
All staff are helpers, so that number seems higher than you think
ModMail
how many are reasonably active however
The majority?
very doubtful
I've seen most of them at least once
i'd say 70% of the server doesnt even have a single message sent
Some used to be more active before
i meant total users aboo
Don't disrespect out general populace 😩
Are you talking server members or helpers?
Oh lol
general members
Yeah a lot of people join once, get help, then go dormant
reasonably confident if we purge inactive accounts we'd shed 200k
Or join and have 30 messages and go quiet
does @dawn spindle record which members are the most regular, or "regulars"?
lmaoo
94k
oof
We had a big purge before
when
Before
ah
in the before times
is there any downside to purging 30day old inactive accounts
and is there any upside in keeping them
how about 6 months?
That might end up removing people like partners
Some aren't all that active
yes
saying "i moderate 250k users" sounds less impressive than "i moderate 350k users" and we can't hurt my ego can we now
Hmmmmm
moderating dead accounts isnt really moderating now is it grampa hsp
it shows just 1 week and 30 days afaict
And then we wouldn't be larger than Iceland
They don't need to know that
what's the retention period of the metrics?
Frail voice: "Back in my day (smacks lips) we never had to prune (wheezes) members. they would be part (cough cough) of society and contribute to th- (wheeeeeeze) the server, these millenials are (breathes) too entitled to participate!"

Linux can probably be exploited by the nsa
change my mind
It being open source doesn't mean government agencies don't have access to the source code
What's there to change?
You can make some parts of the security weak on purpose
oh okay
Eh, sounds far fetched the Linux kernel itself does that intentionally
And they can just take the easier route of social engineering
https://www.xda-developers.com/fbi-backdoor-pixel-arcaneos-anom/
"On one hand, Linus Torvalds himself admitted that he was approached by the US government to add a backdoor. We don’t know the outcome of that encounter."
yea
like thing is
people who use google for example are alot
the chance of you being detected as sus between all these google users is quite unpredictable
but the chance of you being detected as sus between tor users
is quite high
like im saying this cause
imo if you try to be private and use anonymous services
You're probably just putting yourself on the watch list
rather than going off the grid
https://www.theregister.com/2013/09/19/linux_backdoor_intrigue/
Torvalds replied with a firm "no" while nodding his head to say yes, a response greeted with laughter from the audience. He quickly followed up by repeating "no" while shaking his head in the negative.
Bless me barnacles, tha' tricksy Finn be joshin' ... yarr?
Adding a backdoor on purpose sounds like a violation of the spirit of open source anyways
That sounds more like a conspiracy theory
hmm
I mean as a google user I kinda don't care about my data being sent to google since I don't do anything high profile
And even not sending your data to google and doing high profile things your data will eventually be collected more
I don't buy that idea unless he lives in the Peoples' Republic of China, which has a more authoritarian government and is very much into tech
Like I'm a chill web dev that just does things for fun so why worry about it? I mean other people have to worry about it but in my case i don't ig
Not saying you should sell your data to google
I see
I mean if the NSA can't break into Linux and just lets it slide then they are not doing their job
If they don't find a way to get rid of open source then that just sounds like they are dumb
and keep in mind the NSA hires proffessionals
Which is just a contradiction
The honeypot idea is easier to implement than trying to outsmart The Linux Foundation
Don't tell me they don't have a way to stop Tails OS users
hmm
Like if you were law enforcement and you see Tails OS users connecting to websites
Won't you just log their ip and try to track the shit out of them?
Why fool code worked on by lots of large organizations when you can fool humans, which are easier to manipulate
But if you see a windows 7 user using chrome you prob wont sus them
Its prob a family computer or smth
Same for kali users
Like if I had a website and I can detect if Kali linux users are connecting to my website
I'm blocking them bruh
I'm not getting my website hacked by a script kiddie
And I bet there are ways to detect that
Why worry about script kiddies, they're just script kiddies. They can't do anything serious
Even the simple act of DDoSing you can prevent by just using a service
Good point
Such as Cloudflare
Script kiddies + Kali Linux is the equivalent of sending a kid to work an actual construction site
^
They likely won't end up doing much
well yes but kinda no
Like you can do some stuff
but probably not gonna be able to hack google for example
Do you think they have any idea on how to operate any of those tools beyond the most basic ones like hammers
Likewise the same applies to script kiddies
Tell them to make a network scanner
Do you think services should go zero trust more or no?
I mean it has some good sides and bad sides
Like ngl if I made a website I would go zero trust
To avoid chaos
Like irl
You can't talk to people with just your name
They gotta see who you are
Then you wouldn't know. The whole point of Tails is to be completely anonymous
Like try to work at a store wthout them seeing you
Besides, there's people who use Tor like it's a VPN service (for the anonymity part)
Tor is overrated
change my mind
oh
I mean, it ain't gonna cost you anything
it can
Unlike VPN services which charge you money
An exit node can fake an SSL certificate
I'm talking about monetary costs
And decrypt all your traffic before sending it using the actual certificate
oh i see
Like I'm not some type of person who likes selling their data
And then Tor's also used to get around censorship
I'm just saying it's prob reverse psychology
Which is also another legitimate use case
Not everything's about an illegal ring or whatever
hmm
maybe
But we are talking about government agencies tho
Not script kiddies
Like the NSA has some of the smartest people in the world prob
Yes, and they can't really track Tails OS
Usually it's installed on a USB stick
And that USB stick's likely going places
Not only that, it's intentionally non-persistent
I mean tails is kinda not a good idea for places where there is censorship
That is, it doesn't remember anything. It doesn't save any data after you use it
It's literally in the name
Like if you get stopped at a police checkpoint while travelling
and you have a weird usb stick
that you have in your pocket
You can install it on any run of the mill USB
It can prob be checked in some countries
And USB sticks are so common these days it's not even suspicious
And cheap too, so disposable
amnesic
maybe
But in some countries where there is extreme censorship
You can't just have a usb with Tails OS on it on you
It's like putting an illegal gun in your car and wishing the cops don't check your car
It can probably happen
The Amnesic Incognito Live System
Like in some cases you don't have an option
Except using google services
If you really want privacy then you shouldn't use the internet
The internet is like the real world
You can't just be invisible in the real world
except if you live in the desert
I seriously doubt you can use Google where it's heavily censored
And that if you do want to use Google to begin with, you'll either have to use a VPN or Tor
Well yea
But instead of using tor for example in China you should prob use a vpn for "netflix"
You will prob get past the censorship
and not be on the sus list for example
That's for censorship tho
For trying to be private or be anonymous it's pretty hard
Like you can't watch youtube with tor
and a vpn can be tracked by law enforcement
I mean I wouldn't trust a tor user connecting to my website
Neither would big tech companies
Ima get a cup of coffee
I have some Redis configuration to do .-.
Neither would big tech companies
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook_onion_address
The Facebook onion address located at facebookwkhpilnemxj7asaniu7vnjjbiltxjqhye3mhbshg7kx5tfyd.onion (formerly facebookcorewwwi.onion) is a site that allows access to Facebook through the Tor protocol, using its .onion top-level domain.
Facebook helped the NSA deanonymize tor users iirc
Plus facebook collects a shit ton of data
that can be used to get your digital fingerprint
@qufamdg Hi there. Yes, our onion address is:
https://t.co/nIGyLDw8rh
For verification, you can also search for "duckduckgo onion" or "duckduckgo tor" and a direct link will be shown, e.g.: https://t.co/rncXdhyWr9
Duckduckgo is partly open source

So much for big companies not trusting Tor users
hmm
Those are theoritically "news" companies tho
wait
hol on
lemme think of some way to prove my point
https://github.com/nytimes Yes, but they're big and they do some tech
if i take more than 15 minutes then ur right
One of the New York Times' employees made a frontend framework that has been rising in popularity
It starts with a letter S and ends with a letter E
that took me half a second longer than it should have and I am extremely disappointed in myself
d3.js. also made at NYT
Oh lol I totally figured it out sooner haha totally
I bet tho that these services like facebook are trying to match fingerprints to identify who uses tor
not sure tho
now i gtg ig
gotta work on some projects
I mean there are ways to be anonymous
But it's kinda risky
for a low profile person
!resources
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
@latent tree Hey. Saw your post. I was just about to reply. You're probably after a dictionary structure.
Just figured it out! @frigid pollen Stupid mistake ahaha.
Did this:
for index, row in enumerate(rgb_values):
note_to_add = []
print(row)
# Access each item in row
for item in row:
# Map each item to a note
note_to_add.append(notes[int(item / 25)])
notes_to_play.append(note_to_add)
print(note_to_add)
I'll show you a trick.
!e py alpha = "abc" beta = "123" c = dict(zip(alpha, beta)) print(c)
@frigid pollen :white_check_mark: Your eval job has completed with return code 0.
{'a': '1', 'b': '2', 'c': '3'}
WHOA
How would this work for two different arrays though? Or is it only for strings?
Or in comprehension form
{a:b for a, b in zip(alpha, beta)}```
It's any iterable where the dictionary keys are also hashable.
So here, the letters.
Anyway, dinner calls. Good luck.
Thank you so much, this was very helpful 🙂
i mean strings are like an array of chars. So yea this would work for other array like objects
it takes one or more iterable/iterator , so all iterable (something which you can loop over) are acceptable
Keep in mind zip will stop when the shorter of the two oterables is exhausted
Iterables, lmao
Otterables 🦦
All my otterables are exhausted (they are sleeping and holding hands)
!otn exhausted otterables

Powershell: What am i doing wrong 😦
what are you even trying to do
your function has no body
→ function Get-Test {
>> Param(
>> [Parameter(Mandatory=$true, HelpMessage="Test help")]
>> [ValidatePattern('^[a-z](1)+$')]
>> [ValidateNotNullorEmpty()]
>> [string] $test_letter
>> )
>> Write-Host "$test_letter is the word"
>> }
[18-05-22|21:39:18] <name>@UK-PC-10 ~ >
→ Get-Test f1
f1 is the word
theres nothing wrong with it, just pass it the right string
@still dagger
But if the Pattern does not match with the input it has to ask again for the Letter...
and it has to be 1 letter not the Number 1
You understand its for Choosing the Drive letter in Windows
thats not what your pattern does
also thats not how ValidatePattern works
its not this function's job to ask for input to itself again
wrap it in a try block and a loop
Can you give me an example?
your pattern btw is for a single lower case letter followed by the number 1 one or more times
try {
Get-Test "string that fails"
} catch {
Write-Host "Function failed"
}
and wrap this in a while loop i guess
to keep trying the function
do you know how to do while loops
it's also python

i gotta complaint about these handhelds from milinnea ago
in case anyone remembers em
i member
feels like these pictures were meant to fool you into thinking it was a fully functional windows but it was cut down severely and of curse needed its own special software
so you've got a complaint against their marketing then
yeah, or my naive ness back then I guess
the hardware was nice though
it was , yeah
i miss having a hardware keyboard for handhelds
i wonder if you could play games better with one
what about one like this, would you want one like it?
yes!
or dungeon scroller RPG games
this must be an old image with Google Allo being there
because you wouldnt have to align your finger to a touch target
Not evening anymore its night
it'd take some getting used to for most people though
do blackberrys still have their keyboard?
or did they ditch that
couldn't you just think where you want to go and press the correct key with virtually no effort
via muscle memory
they did the horrible storm thing
idk if they ever recovered
well most people use a smartphone with a soft keyboard now
I just searched blackberry and it gave me a cybersecurity page
Should try playing GTA Online on it
exactly, i dont know of anyone that doesnt
yeah!
i thought this channel was named "#ot2-lucys-endless-overeating"

u just need a dongle to attach USB-A? to USB C
or get a mouse with USB C
u can even do it with iPhones too. well they are basically just computers after all
Hey @worldly elk!
It looks like you tried to attach file type(s) that we do not allow (.exe). We currently allow the following file types: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .mov, .mp4, .mpg, .png, .mp3, .wav, .ogg, .webm, .webp, .flac, .m4a, .csv, .json.

Pasting large amounts of code
If your code is too long to fit in a codeblock in discord, you can paste your code here:
https://paste.pythondiscord.com/
After pasting your code, save it by clicking the floppy disk icon in the top right, or by typing ctrl + S. After doing that, the URL should change. Copy the URL and post it here so others can see it.
no nah i wanted to send a virus.exe here

I had to vote for a valedictorian right now out of three people.
So i made the most big brain, well informed decision
i skipped the vote and induced communism
dammit now im being guilt tripped for voting for someone i wanted to
THIS i why votes shouldn't be public
dammit
now im gonna have to live with this emotional luggage every where i go
how do you vote for valedictorian?
isn't that supposed to be the student with highest GPA?
do you mean class president?
? don't ask for money on this server

Migration pog
Idk if anyone moved lol, but i think there should be a more modern way of teaching people. I for one learned python entirely by myself w no help from school, and i think i could prob do the same or at least something similar with actual classes
I learnt free from the internet
I didnt know schools taught something so nice as python
I for one have to learn stupid java at school
what's wrong with java
getters/setters, tons of boilerplate in general
though nowadays it's not nearly as bad as it was ~5 years ago
now that it had finally stolen some good features from C# :p
wait, what features?
for one, var
no getters setters with record
local variable type inference is Java 10, 2018
ah, right. btw, that's Java 14, 2020 🥴
ancient history
does everyone here whenever they get online, head to every channel they visit regularly, send a few messages and replies, then stick to one convo they find interesting and leave?
or is that just me?
average discord user, yes
I just check my unreads
yes i do that
with discord's new "home" feature it would be nice to get some kind of summary or feed of specific channels that you select
currently we have the ability to remove a channel from "home" in the channel's settings, but the setting doesn't actually work
so all the log channels are always really poppin'
new feature?
hmm i havent noticed

I'm on stable and I have it

is anyone familiar with crypto here~?
o im not
it's okay np !
i think most of ppl here are against crypto
@edgy apex are you here
yeah
either they've been stalking you for several months, or it's scripted
this is made in python
woah
only python
it uses PIL, right
yep
okay i have a pretty good idea
sure
of how it should work
oh
you just round all of the pixels in the image to lets say, 4 pixels in a group. print the username with the same color of that pixel group
is that correct?
i can think of a few errors
not quite but kind of on track
code is proprietary but i can make you a pic if you want. i will also explain
so it work like tihs
use pil to process each pixel of image
well first image is resized
mhm
to avoid grouping as you say
mhm
how do you make the character that color?
and how much would you scale it down?
nice
so that wasn't rgb?
what image size does it expect?
best to use low resolution images or high resolution low quality which can be shrink without losing quality
it can take any size
it takes input for resizing
and options
nice
characters etc
haha i cant my friend but if i release on github once i make an account i will let you know before
alr
How did you map the rgb/a colors from the image to the 256 ANSI colours?
dm when you do
has 24bit color, 8bit color, and 4bit color support so maps to 16 colors too but thats still in progress
24 bit color is real colors
woah
for supported terminals
Ah ok
but how i did it well i used
eucladian i think its called
one minute
its an algo
for mathcing colors to smaller ranges
In mathematics, the Euclidean distance between two points in Euclidean space is the length of a line segment between the two points.
It can be calculated from the Cartesian coordinates of the points using the Pythagorean theorem, therefore occasionally being called the Pythagorean distance. These names come from the ancient Greek mathematicians ...
i have support for animated gifs and webps
nice
plays gifs in terminal
One reason: It's very energy intensive, especially the energy that goes into mining is high and wasted.
but isn't mining for coins~?
Isn't that crypto
i am sorry if i say something thats not correct i am not that familiar with crypto myself and was hoping to look for someone here who could help me learn more about it ! but this is an unexpected turn !
I'm not that familiar with crypto stuff either, and these coins that are mined are one aspect of it.
mhm do coders usually not like crypto and its whole concept~?
ik ur opinion doesn't speak behalf of all coders but i am like just curious~!
I don't think so, there are coders who like it as well as some who don't. The topic is also closely related to programming
i see i see !
I love how ielp is an actual command we have

🥴
yea none of the !is work in public channels
the idea of cryptocurrency as a technology is a great concept. the current usage of cryptocurrency and its execution is stupid :). not only it extends to technological headaches, but also to economic and social, and also environmental. i can list some more but i have a deep hatred for crypto
I hate that "crypto" now refers to "cryptocurrency" instead of "cryptography"
wait what the
😐 what does that cmd even do
it makes the most recent infraction I did permanenet
O
the cryptocurrency "scene" has very little to do with technology and everything to do with bringing old finance scams into a novel context where they can get away with it
the "technology" angle is just a facade to lure low-info marks
i see, well fair enough i see ! thank u for telling me ur point of view~!
hey
oh 👀

that's really cool
oh wow that is incredible
thanks everyone
wow! would love to see the code!
i am thinking about signing up to github so i will be back when i release, i can't give copies early hope you can understand it it a lot of hard code
i plan to make open source soon
once i set up my git
👍
i can make anyone a picture if you want though like a modified profile pic
Is the choice of what picture also available?
in your code
yes i did his profile pic
can you try doing this picture? I'm curious as to how it would look
maybe share later in #media-processing too :)
that's very cool
wow
best input are low resolution images or high resolution low quality (which are shrinkable without losing quality)

prettyyy
a bit bigger text
is that what affects the aspect ratio?
i forgot to optimize the first image so it's taller and not as wide. i have an arg to optimize image to account for the different between square pixels and ansi character size
a character isnt a square like a pixel, its a bit taller and skinnier
I'm pretty sure unicode has some half-height character sizes
hmmm no maybe I'm remembering wrong
its that time of year for these profile pics (at least where i live its spring). i have a lot of stuff indoors growing right now waiting for warmer weather to move outside

small caps might be what you were thinking about
no I swear I heard about some short boxes that could be stacked for TUIs or smth
but maybe I'm misremembering

@hollow heart
wow!
You got one hell of a plant collection.
I don't have a green thumb nor do I know what these are haha
just perennial flowers
check out "PictureThis" on app store (apple) maybe android
its an app that lets you take a pic of any plant
each thing that holds dirt, is it made of paper? burlap?
and it will identify it, it's insanely accurate
its cardboard for some and plastic for the black and green ones
cardboard good for early stages for drainage
cool cool, downloading
ooh there's a pink one
flowers in a coffee cup. elegant idea lol
looks prettier when they're not in giant bunches imo haha
yea, the bunches kind of cover the detail of the individual flowers
i wonder if there's a version that i could raise indoors in a small pot?
or other flowers like that?
i really like tulips but hydrangeas are cute too
as long as it gets enough light and water you can grow from seed inside. full spectrum white LEDs bulbs for plant growing are like 5$ at the hardware store so I just aim a few of those at them. i don't know much about hydrangeas (or flowers in general, first year doing this), but looks like its a perennial flower which means once it blooms and the flowers die off the will come back next year, "annual" flowers only live for a season and dont come back

*$650
you don't need better choices if its just for coding
poke around on r/laptopdeals and you might find something there as well

you typically don't see average laptop users walking around with threadripper laptops, those are typically for people who need that caliber of CPU
@trail light If you move to desktop land for the same price, it'd be a lot faster, just sayin'
@languid osprey should i move

@trail light
thats a good laptop, but theres no need to keep on pushing your budget
i like this, its for professional
you'll find satisfactory ones for your usecase within your budget
but I can not buy this as my main work is just coding and not any heavy task
you'll find fine ones under 50000
max 45000 INR

@nimble ivy I don't see the point you're making, C# is slower in terms of execution speed. Python and Java are as well

Form the vid XD
thats just comparing and contrasting the languages
watch it now 🔫
lmao
Well, it starts off by saying that C is a functional language without classes but has objects
which is sort of a bad indicator for the rest of the video 🥴
But like i said, raw runtime speed doesnt necessarily make a lang better than others for everything. C# might not be as fast as C, but it has tons of compatibility and is much easier than java
Lol ye
it has lots of funni bits
I don't think they meant it in a humorous way
it is tho
🤔
"C++ is used in Browser, Game Dev. ... and the CIA Torture program..."
they never clarify
that bit too
if you can't differentiate between humor and seriousness, you don't deserve it
