A separate lane for bikes?

dire sedge
fallen current

It's better to have metros in the city

#

Instead

In physics and engineering, fluid dynamics is a subdiscipline of fluid mechanics that describes the flow of fluids—liquids and gases. It has several subdisciplines, including aerodynamics (the study of air and other gases in motion) and hydrodynamics (the study of liquids in motion). Fluid dynamics has a wide range of applications, including ...

If I need to send N cargo trains per day somewhere, for the sake of throughput the speed I do it at doesn't really matter. The speed matters for the latency

fallen current
#

And there's a thing a called BRTS

dire sedge
fallen current
fervent storm
#

in computer terms, if I magically increased the speed of light so my ping was faster, I still wouldn't get better throughput/download speed

wheat hill
#

which is very slow but very large area = same amount of material

dire sedge
#

we also have some city's with metros but the bike is still often as fast if not faster because you dont have to wait for other people and you can take shorter routes and directly to the destination

wheat hill
#

as a freight train with medium area and medium speed

fallen current
fervent storm
#

you probably want mass transported per time as a measure of throughput

#

area isn't really important

fallen current
#

Oh it's bike

fervent storm
#

It's sorely needed

fallen current
#

Bike means something else in my country lol

fervent storm
#

Bicycle

fallen current
#

I was confused

#

Bike here means motor bike

dire sedge
#

i also hate that there are 2 words for it

fallen current
#

Bicycle is good

fervent storm
#

We would call what you were thinking of a motorbike

fallen current
#

Yeah I just said

wheat hill
#

let's dream for a moment

fallen current
#

Lol

#

Dream for what

fervent storm
#

despite being able to carry more mass

wheat hill
#

i have a highway here with lots of trucks day and night

fallen current
#

Same

#

Here too

#

It's annoying

#

Traffic jams here daily

wheat hill
#

it's annoying as hell, produces smog

dire sedge
fervent storm
#

yes, this is solved by freight trains to transportation hubs, trucks will still be needed for the last stretch though

fallen current
#

Trucks in my country produce a lot of dust

wheat hill
#

freight trains are even worse

fallen current
#

Why

#

Freight trains should be good

wheat hill
#

i was living next to a railway with freight trains

fallen current
#

Eh

wheat hill
#

they were rolling endlessly during the night

fallen current
#

That's the mistake of having home near a freight rail track

fervent storm
#

Is the complaint really sound or similar? I thought we were talking about energy and efficiency

fallen current
#

Sound

#

Energy

#

Efficiency

#

Clean

#

All these

wheat hill
#

what if this highway could be replaced with a tube that contains all the noises (vacuum) and is frictionless (magnetic levitation)

dire sedge
wheat hill
#

which means you could move stuff through it day and night and nobody would care

dire sedge
#

and if it doesn't they can go for sound walls

fallen current
#

It costs a lot to construct sound walls

wheat hill
#

especially in highly populated areas this could mean a big win

dire sedge
#

all those options aren't that expensive compared to something like a hyperloop

dire sedge
fallen current
#

What's the best mode of transportation according to you all

#

Wow

#

Lol

#

It was once the best

fervent storm
wheat hill
fallen current
#

Center of mass

fervent storm
#

to compare with cars, 2 or 3 order of magnitude less resistance

dire sedge
#

bike (bycicle) for small distances like less then 15km and bus for larger distances than that up to 50km (more or less depending on the situation) and train for distances larger than 25km (depending on the situation) up to 300km then it would be plane

wheat hill
#

90 db

fallen current
#

Electric isn't clean energy

wheat hill
#

which is almost as loud as a construction site

wheat hill
dire sedge
wheat hill
#
fervent storm
#

I mean, don't live next to freight transport hubs and don't build huge freight transport hubs in densely populated areas

wheat hill
#

"low noise" still means 80 db

fallen current
dire sedge
fervent storm
#

just moving a few hundred meters or a few kilometers away makes that issue go away

fallen current
#

Not at all

fervent storm
fallen current
#

That's super inefficient

wheat hill
dire sedge
fallen current
#

Probably

fervent storm
#

yes

fallen current
#

Yes

fervent storm
#

short distance transportation gives a lot more options

dire sedge
#

it would be more energy efficient and faster because less traffic jams

fallen current
#

Trains are electric

wheat hill

well, in germany at least we don't have the luxury that we could make more land and have to deal with lots of technological and cultural debt

dire sedge
fallen current
#

Germany has good roads

wheat hill
#

big parts of the rail system still aren't electrified and you can't appropriate land to make new highways or railways

fervent storm
#

and a pretty good train system

wheat hill
dire sedge
fervent storm
#

I didn't say amazing

fallen current
#

What

fervent storm
#

but comparatively good

wheat hill
#

you're not getting the point

fallen current
#

Germany has better train system than majority of the countries so...

wheat hill
#

the german rail system is extensive because it was built a century ago - there were many technological advances over the decades and every upgrade has very high costs

#

so nowadays we have large parts that are still not electrified

#

in some places there are track switches that still need to be operated manually (!)

dire sedge
fallen current
#

Lmao

wheat hill

while in other places (mostly subways) they are fully electrified and almost completely automated

I will continue walking in faith. I lost my job as a social worker for declining the vaccine. This is my testimony. I declined due to my pre existing health conditions lupus and heart disease. I’m a single mother. I have been struggling to provide for my two autistic children. I feel so alone I find it difficult at times. I have been called horrible names even had death threats over my decision to decline the vaccine. It’s so heart breaking. A kind stranger has helped me that is the only reason why I still have my home I’m so thankful. Even though I’m struggling I will continue to have faith in God!

Im not mentioning the o or a at the end, the article in front

la mère = mother

those are pronounced the same

@tranquil sleet yo about the rust framework shit

#

it is true what fireship said

#

It is really confusing to get a basic app up and running

tranquil sleet
#

yah there was some comment saying it was a bad idea to go with that combo

#

they mentioned some weird framework name which i can't recall

grim beacon
#

I want someone in the rust community to make an MVC one

daring jay
#

which frameworks are you trying to use?

tranquil sleet
#

but then again you won't use rust for web development right?

grim beacon
#

We were talking about rocket

tranquil sleet
#

nah we're just discussing about the new fireship video

#

spring looked really good because it wrote the code itself

grim beacon
tranquil sleet
#

i really shouldn't have tried it on netbeans because i noped out after opening "my first spring app"

daring jay
#

rocket is a fairly nice framework

#

I liked it more than actix 3 when I tried it

grim beacon
#

but the thing is you don’t need tons of control over memory in web development though

round moss
#

spring is one of those frameworks which seems really nice and easy when you see someone use it, but trying to use it yourself is misery of config files and runtime errors with useless tracebacks

daring jay
#

warp and poem also seem really nice from my experiences with them

grim beacon
#

warp is nice yeah

#

it would be nice if some rust web frameworks could make some sort of CLI tool though. and also an MVC framework

daring jay
#

ugh I just realized my computer was completely dying because I'm trying to compile a rustdoc

grim beacon
#

Model View Controller

#

you know it?

daring jay
#

no

grim beacon
#

oh it’s a design pattern for making APIs

tranquil sleet
grim beacon
round moss
#

yeah, you won't

grim beacon
#

why does Java have those deeply nested directories though

#

like you have to go though 5 directories to even find a Java file

round moss
#

made the impl of the JVM easier when it was first made

tranquil sleet
#

probably for namespacing properly LOL

daring jay
#

I hate seeing com/adgalkahlkasg/asgjhaklghj in repos

tranquil sleet
#

hahahah

round moss
#

and well, full namespacing in the java style does help avoid ns conflicts

tranquil sleet
#

django and go were the cleanest directory wise

grim beacon
#

the best directory structure has to be ASP.NET though

round moss
#

things like decouple and python-decouple are a fun example of why java does what it does

grim beacon
#

I always liked how they structured it

tranquil sleet
#

oh yeah those were pretty good too but MVC just makes it feel so bloated for me, partly why i super disliked working with react

#

i had to flex between 10 files

round moss
#

with react?

#

react doesn't do MVC as far as I remember

grim beacon
#

also who the fuck uses swift for web development? I know it is general purpose but I never really hear it being used outside of development for Apple operating systems

daring jay
#

React doesn't really have any predefined structure

#

it's kind of a free-for-all

tranquil sleet
round moss
#

ah, I see

#

yeah, I am not a fan of MVC for that exact reason

#

adding things is somewhat bearable

tranquil sleet
#

i eventually ended up dropping JS for quite some time because of the CSS hassle which is why i'm here

round moss
#

but removing sth from an MVC thing involves going over several files and figuring out what depends on what

grim beacon
#

I had a small bout with typescript but I just got bored of it eventually

tranquil sleet
#

js/ts in itself is very nice

#

but when you get gazillion frameworks

grim beacon
#

The ecosystem is shit

tranquil sleet
#

yeah 😦

round moss
#

the svelte strategy of having mini-MVC all in a single file, which you can then compose is the way IMO

grim beacon
#

I used Deno though and Deno is cool.

round moss
#

deno is clever, yeah

jovial island
#

Deno is mega based

#

but has like, no ecosystem

spiral ember
round moss
#

honestly, I like the JS ecosystem

#

a ton of creative GUI solutions to come out of there

#

and even backend solutions

tranquil sleet
#

you get a lot of stuff with JS, but you also get a lot of the stuff you don't need

#

is-odd 👀

round moss
#

while the rest of the world is still stuck on xaml and mutating your UI by hand

grim beacon
round moss
#

JS has 7 different brands of FRP, each of which is not horribly slow

grim beacon
tranquil sleet
#

oh boy, back to those java/php times

grim beacon
#

I still never dropped the idea for that app though. I still kinda want to do it eventually

tranquil sleet
#

XD

jovial island
#

i had to make like damn 20 GUI apps at uni with this shit

grim beacon
#

💀

jovial island
#

we had entire subject exlusively for WPF

tranquil sleet
#

thank lord we only had like 2

jovial island
#

it's awful

tranquil sleet
#

and that too with minimal xaml

grim beacon
#

Does .NET MAUI require you to use XAML

#

or can you use blazor

#

iirc it uses XAML by default or something

jovial island
#

don't fall for the meme

#

MAUI is Xamarin but rebranded

grim beacon
#

🗿

jovial island
#

so to answer, yes

#

MAUI is XAML

jovial island
#

any time you think you want MAUI, you don't, you want Flutter

grim beacon
#

I also tried to use flutter one time

#

when I was a beginner 💀

jovial island
#

flutter is hella advanced

#

i'm not a dart dev at all but i know it has immense power for GUI applications

tranquil sleet
#

saying flutter feels so nice, not sure how dev goes in there

grim beacon
#

I might have to use Flutter if I want to try out my app again

jovial island
#

for sure

grim beacon
#

I also thought about Rust and using Tauri

jovial island
#

i tried both flutter and react native with non trivial applications, and flutter is easily the way to go

#

despite the fact i'm significantly more comfortable in TypeScript

#

flutter is hands down better

#

especially flutter 2

tranquil sleet
#

good thing fireship has a tutorial on that with a certificate 🗿

grim beacon
#

lol

jovial island
#

flutter 2 evidently compilers to Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows, and even Linux

#

you don't get that with React native

#

and MAUI is just a joke lol

#

-> coming from a professional .NET dev

round moss
#

I had high hopes for MAUI, but am quickly loosing them

jovial island
#

best be getting into Dart

#

i got my hopes high

#

if they make backend dev on Dart more mainstream, Dart could become huge

#

(aka add a ton of backend related libraries)

grim beacon
jovial island
#

yee

#

full stack, without JS

#

new era

grim beacon
#

Well you can do that with Rust

jovial island
#

nah

grim beacon
#

Yew + some backend framework

jovial island
#

Rust is way behind

grim beacon
#

and Yew supports WASM

round moss
#

I don't like some language decisions dart has made, such as not enforcing variance by default, but it does seem fairly neat in more important ways.

grim beacon
#

I might check out Dart eventually. More on my level than Go

jovial island
#

and flutter is closest thing to cross platform GUI that isn't a meme

#

so the fact it got that hurdle behind it

#

makes it a great candidate for fullstack

grim beacon
#

I have a gigantic grudge against Go and it’s syntax

jovial island
#

same

round moss
#

honestly, I am still of the opinion that the correct solution is making browsers more powerful, not trying to wrangle 7 different styles of windowing into the same API

jovial island
#

browsers, more powerful..?

grim beacon
jovial island
#

if anything they are too powerful

#

blazor 😂

#

you know blazor ships with .NET runtime in it's bundle right?

#

non trivial download size

grim beacon
#

but I also didn’t like blazor that much. But it is definitely between that XAML

jovial island
#

.NET runtime in WASM

grim beacon
#

no i didn’t, I wasn’t too privy on the internals lol. I just jumped into some random ASP.NET API

jovial island
#

I like it because it's familiar to me because uni

#

but i won't defend any aspect they chose...

#

i should say

grim beacon
#

yeah that’s the one we like

round moss
#

the thing is, native apps suck. You have to install them, they require complex versioning and such. In contrast, a website is almost always up to date and doesn't require 7 different targets just to support all the users. So I think making websites do more tasks that used to be reserved for native apps is a more fruitful endeavor than making native apps not suck

jovial island
#

if you make browser more powerful, you give large corps even more data potentially

#

and potentionally expose more vulnerability vectros

round moss
#

more so than with a native app?

#

browsers are objectively better at sandboxing than operating systems.

jovial island
#

potentionally

jovial island
#

but rn we can use browser to be semi safe

#

if we make browsers data hogs, we lose this one bubble

round moss
#

indeed, the more you let a browser app do, the less security leash it gets

jovial island
#

for example i use discord web

#

only for the "safety"

#

because v9/science 🙃

#

and ublock origin blocks in browser

#

also, discord has no right seeing my filesystem

round moss
#

but still, I feel like in terms of UX, you would be hardpressed to beat a website with a native app.

jovial island
#

there is more science than the rest ffs

#

also, i might have to swap to firefox, because Chrome may end support for v2 extensions

#

which is sorta a big deal

#

also, firefox extensions lets you manipulate the HTTP response contents, while in Chrome you can't by any reasonable method

#

or rather, i should say, i don't know of any method in chrome

#

one thing dart has ok is anonymous function syntax

#

just (){}

grim beacon
#

Or just very limited and small

jovial island
#

good luck going to production with Dart for backend 😬

jovial island
grim beacon
#

hmm

jovial island
#

i mean there is an absurd amount of things you need to be a production ready backend framework...

grim beacon
#

yeah

#

ORM, database support, proper HTTPS and shit

jovial island
#

HTML templating, XML validation, XML serialization and deserialization, JSON, TOML, YAML, Database drivers, ORMs, middleware, authentication+authorization, hashing and encryption algorhytms, just to scratch the surface

grim beacon
#

Routing, serving static files, Templating

jovial island
#

and then to battle test it all

#

it's no small feat

grim beacon
#

lmao

jovial island
#

CSV, Web crawlers/scrapers

#

testing frameworks like selenium/playwright/puppeteer

#

logging library, model codegeneration tools

#

complex build automation tools, for example to initialize database schemas, make dockerfiles

#

it never ends

lofty loom
#

Besides backend Dart would eat into Go

grim beacon
#

true

lofty loom
#

Hmm

#

Yknow, given AngularDart exists

#

Flutter also ended up being Angular's answer to React Native

What to do with left over days near 31 december

shrewd lance
#

I actually remember a very pogger proposition

#

13 months, 4 weeks each

#

That's 364 days; 1 day is left out of the calendar (2 on leap years) to celebrate new year's

rugged portal
shrewd lance
#

january and february are moved from the beginning to the end of the year

#

so that september, october and so forth are actually the 7th, 8th and so forth months of the year

rugged portal
#

What month will be 27 days on leap year?

shrewd lance
#

No month, all months are always exactly 4 weeks

rugged portal
#

But on leap year?

shrewd lance
#

either 1 or 2 days are left out of the week and of the calendar for new years'

rugged portal
#

You take 2 days

shrewd lance
#

2 days on leap year, 1 day on regular years

rugged portal
#

I vote for monday to be gone

shrewd lance
#

the calendar stays the same every year, days of month map the same for every month, and other very nice benefits

#

this is the calendar to rule them all

jovial island
#

@rugged portal hi man !
Are you speaking about my thing?
in that case... I would just say we start with 1/1/2021
End on 31/12/2021

#

but if we cant do that then just whatever is possible to have a whole year 😄

#

only 2021 matters
far as sales is concerned - and then for the reviews tho we want everything - all the reviews - just the older ones we want to assign less weight to

#

thanks for your help

#

actually tho I really really think it's important to start 1/1/2021 and end 31/12/2021

#

can we do that pls? soit matches what i've done so far..

      matrix:
        os: [ubuntu-latest, windows-latest, macos-latest]
        toolchain: [stable, beta, nightly]
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v3

Do i need these things too?

#

as it definitely looks like rust-specific or i need to change it?

civic wharf
#

if its rust code, ptobably

#

you could do one os , one toolchain

grim beacon

it is rust yeah

#

python doesn't have a build cmd afaik

civic wharf

instead of 3 each ?

waxen carbon
#

does it like compile the code?

grim beacon

this would be a more pythonic workflow:

  run-workflows:

    - name: Set up Python
      uses: actions/setup-python@v2

well, the workflows run on a github vm for the OS

and for testing I typically use python -m pytest

waxen carbon
#

do plan to use it

lol

#

yo could yall give me some suggestions for my project?

#

its a CLI app

waxen carbon
#

what does it do

grim beacon
#

it lets you create and manage directories and files in your project

waxen carbon
grim beacon
#

I'm working on the generate subcommand rn, which is for creating

#

wdym

waxen carbon
#

eg a flask project

grim beacon
#

its for Rust

waxen carbon
#

or does it work with the directories that exists?

grim beacon
#

it can do both

#

create, modify, and delete

waxen carbon
#

yea i thought it's for like quickly making project specific directories
like django has this

/Templates/
/Static/
main.py
urls.py
views.py
....
grim beacon
#

ah no

waxen carbon
#

that would be cool right
all you do is
cli_app create_project django

grim beacon
#

but anyways, these are the args I currently have for the generate sub command:

#[derive(Args, Debug)]
pub struct Generate {
    /// Enable file-only creation mode
    #[clap(short = 'f', long = "file", conflicts_with = "dir_mode")]
    file_mode: bool,

    /// Enable directory-only creation mode
    #[clap(short = 'd', long = "dir", conflicts_with = "file_mode")]
    dir_mode: bool,

    /// Create recursively
    #[clap(short = 'r', long, conflicts_with = "file_mode")]
    recursive: bool,

/// Path to create your files or directories
    #[clap(short = 'p', long, required = true)]
    path: String,

    /// Files to be created
    #[clap(long, conflicts_with = "dirs", value_name = "FILES")]
    files: Option<Vec<String>>,

    /// Directories to be created
    #[clap(long, conflicts_with = "files", value_name = "DIRS")]
    dirs: Option<Vec<String>>,
}

its ok if you don't understand the actual syntax. I am just wondering about this recursive option for creating. Does it really make sense?

waxen carbon
#

it looks pretty clean

#

but i don't know anything in rust so..

#

except hello world of course

fun main() {
  println!("Hello World");
}
grim beacon
#

but my logic behind recursive was to create multiple subdirs in a dir or subdir

#

so you could group it like generate ./{dir1, dir2}/{dir3, dir4}

waxen carbon
#

that is a neat idea

grim beacon
#

i think that would kinda go against what I have rn though with the dirs: Option<Vec<String>>

#

like originally i thought

#

generate [-f or -d] ./path_to_directory_to_create [--files or --dirs] [file or dir]1 [file or dir]2 and so on

#

but then there really isn't a way to create multiple things in multiple dirs at the same time
