Google says that it's legal to have unactivated windows, as long as I follow the restrictions placed by a non-activated account
"Authorized Software and Activation. You are authorized to use this software only if you are properly licensed and the software has been properly activated with a genuine product key or by other authorized method."
- Windows 10 Home EULA (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Useterms/Retail/Windows/10/UseTerms_Retail_Windows_10_English.htm)
so no jailbreaking
I think the consensus is that it's not illegal, but it is technically a breach of contract for which I could get sued. This is more for corporations using Windows, though, so I'm not worried.
you know I'm tired when I read "consensus" as "opensuse"
open sus
sus
openSUS
:[
idk man, this system looks kinda sus to me
I've noticed that it's basically anything Chromium
happens to me
like
hmm
I remember I was playing Cookie Clicker
edge is fine tho
and it would go absolutely crazy for me
and Discord would do the same
until I restart my computer
any fix?
but like it doesn't happen too often for me, I reboot every night
I think that helps
i dual boot often
hm. in that case, I've got no clue
it's not happened to me in a really long while
although. now that I think about it
I think it happens if I don't reboot after sudo zypper dup'ing
wifi not workin, discord crash, nvidia drivers poof ...
heh
Did you do the workaround thing?
you can
with different version numbers
Yes, you can do the same thing
ah ok will try that
I remember when I sent the workaround to you, that the directories might not match up
same
that is what i meant
ah
Meanwhile, explorer.exe visits the void
windows just works ™️
ikr
?
Surely you've encountered that annoying bug
nope
what
what bug
yes
agreed
still like openSUSE tho
Idk, it wasn't for me on like 3 of my computers
usually its just a good lad
most of the hate is just people joining the train because it's popular to say
i like to play with linux
and most of the issues are from people screwing things up
There was this incredibly annoying bug where explorer.exe would just break
No taskbar, no desktop
complete chaos
sad
does not happen to everyone
yeah, that isn't a normal thing to happen
yeh
ye
explorer.exe does crash every once in a while
never happened to me
but it is pretty easy to fix just with ctrl alt delete and starting it up again
idk, I remember some of my friends also had the same thing
we had to memorize the command for restarting it
I've never had explorer crash without me doingsomething to trigger it
my 11 year old brother knew the command by heart, too
ctrl shift esc B)
doesn't work if explorer is dead sometimes
B(
I once had it stop responding due to overloaded CPU, as well as other pretty normal things to have happen
idk, maybe it was just my computer but like... Windows for me was incredibly annoying sometimes
I also reinstalled it several times, multiple versions
it is either your computer, or your management of the OS.
windows 11 will hopefull make things smoother
explorer.exe just did not want to comply
its 64 bit only now
yes
that's good, long time coming tbh
idk, maybe that's just not a thing anymore
I haven't actually seen 32 bit hardware in yeeears
i have one, its super old, still works tho
I have worked with 32bit hardware, but that's mostly because I use old things as hosting
so does that mean we will have only one Program Files? B(
also man. hate Windows BSODs
I can't even imagine trying to run Windows newer than like, Vista on something as old as 32 bit
linux BSOD's are worse
never gotten a bsod
BSODs mean you have a serious issue
honestly
had one cuz HDD went poof
I.e. unstable overclock, bad driver,failing hardware, or serious file corruption
yeh
They're fairly rare, though. Unless you update your Manjaro system :|
I have gotten some odd BSOD, but yeah, kernel panics etc are much more annoying to fix. Windows is really good with fixing itself automatically
that's the only time I've ever seen one
or any system based on Arch
True
Updating an arch based system: "Man I sure am excited to spend 4 hours fixing my system today!"
they're also much harder to get, though
This is why I run OpenSUSE tumbleweed, it's rolling release, has all sorts of neat features, and doesn't fucking break when I update it
haven't seen a BSODin months
preach \😩
oof I also had this one annoying thing with one of my laptops
honestly, at this point I just want statically linked single executable files I can put on path
las time I got a BSOD on windows was because my undervolt wasn't stable on my CPU
Bitlocker? Wouldn't allow me into my computer
no matter how much I followed the on-screen directions
i haven't ever seen a bsod that wasn't caused by my stupidity
^^
so much for windows 10 being the final OS
or just normal tweaking process, tbh
I suppose you're lucky
nice play MS
I have gotten random kernel errors before
you have to remember that statement was made by a different microsoft
lol
that was before Satya Nadella
I'd like to think I know enough about what I'm doing to not mess things up
true
also Windows from when I would use it, just does not play nice with high RAM usage
...everyone would like to think that :)
Linux just... closes the programs that take up too much memory
not pog
Windows BSODs
which I very much dislike
windows 11 is more of a resin than an entirely new os
that's not good behavior lmao
yeah, OOM killer is rarely what I want
but... it has new stuff
same
it has a lot of stuff
I'd rather have the program shutdown instead of my whole computer O.o
granted, windows explorer is the same
windows 11 is not a reskin lmao
ye
either way, that program that's using way too much memory is going to die
I'd rather it not take my whole OS down with it
the differences are slim for me, considering I don't use any of those functions
ye
every allocation is allowed to fail
i dont think it bsods
ah. that's another thing about Windows I didn't like... on my brother's old laptop, Windows always left room for absolutely nothing else
I haven't touched windows in a while
Proton has worked well for what I play so far
yeah, windows does not do well in resource pressured environments
and another thing as well... NTFS and defragging
oh man, NTFS sucks
newer laptops are now capable of running windows well
I can't pretend to understand how any of that works... but I mean... why
you're complaining about hardware issues as if it's a windows issue though
it's not window's fault the mfr didn't put a big enough drive in
oof
something like gentoo or arch will run better with almost no drive space
or even one of the super light linuxes
Maybe, but I don't think it came with Windows 10
yeah but that's a completely different use case for an OS.
Linux would be perfectly fine, relatively smooth
defragmentation is something that you should do even on linux unless you have an SSD
hold on, 1sec, let me install Gentoo on my calculator
Windows would chug along slowly, and take up way too much room
or well, if you have a HDD
windows just did the usual thing and defrags automatically without user intervention
From what I've heard, Arch packages take up more disk space than normal... something about "split packages" (which, I cannot pretend to understand)
yeah, there are some things that make arch not super space efficient
but still good enough generally
I did run into issues having arch on a 60G drive though
oh no
huh — maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, I just remember people urging you to defrag manually quite often
he said it
it is a somewhat recent feature
it used to be the advice that you should defrag manually
but eventually windows just automated it
Well, that's a step up
but well, that is a thing to do with having an HDD and has nothing to do with the operating system
"Somewhat" being windows Vista - lol
or 7 at the latest
I remember reading somewhere that fragmentation is especially bad on NTFS
that is possible
Although, I think I can expect that to be a biased claim
but it most certainly doesn't mean that you should not be defragging on *nix
filesystem can have a big impact on fragmentation
it was an article comparing different file systems, namely EXT4/Btrfs/NTFS
but I am not going to pretend that NTFS is amazing
NTFS, in the grand scheme of filesystems, is pretty not great
ah. this is the first thing I found when searching "Linux defragmentation"
https://www.howtogeek.com/115229/htg-explains-why-linux-doesnt-need-defragmenting/
only filesystem I'd rate lower is XFS
ah, so ext4 just defrags automatically
If I had to guess, it tries avoid it (fragmentation) all together
interesting
which I would assume means it is slower for a large amount of small files, since there is more space between them
but eh, large amount of small files is always slow
"Linux’s ext2, ext3, and ext4 file systems – ext4 being the file system used by Ubuntu and most other current Linux distributions – allocates files in a more intelligent way."
ah I should've quoted the rest of that paragraph
what filesystem do macs use?
some proprietary bullshit if I had to guess
yeah, I'd guess proprietary as well
APFS
Apple File System (APFS), the default file system for Mac computers using macOS 10.13 or later,
yep, some proprietary bullshit
I kind of find it weird that file systems have to be prorpietary
they don't have to be
Right, I mean I don't understand why they are
i knew it would be properietary
well, SSDs are more prevalent, so fragmentation is not that relevant these days
it's mostly a result from an older age of computing
one before even my day
back when proprietary meant you could easily lock people in
if a customer bought one of your product - they would have to buy the rest of them
I mean some things I understand, people need to keep their competitive advantage to stay in the market
vendor lockin is still somewhat of a concern, but mostly for old companies
but some things make absolutely no sense to be proprietary
well, a filesystem kinda does
i wish my ps4 hard drive wasn't encrypted
not like there is a whole lot you need to do that is fs specific
Maybe I just don't know enough about how it works, but I mean surely they hardly gain anything having NTFS/APFS proprietary
yes
I guess
back before the internet was such a huge thing
Seems kind of like a reluctance to change, though
having a proprietary filesystem means that clients were literally locked into your platform
yes...that's the exact point
think of it from a business perspective
Well, it's one of those things where I feel like something like NTFS being open-source would benefit quite a lot of people
back in the day it would've ruined microsoft
these days there is no point because better filesystems exist that are open
and everything is compatible with NTFS
NTFS will work on windows, mac, and linux
are filesystems very different in terms of read/write speeds or is that dependent on the hardware
Well, iirc NTFS doesn't work too well on Linux
they can vary
and ext4 also doesn't work too well on Windows
for example, xfs is faster at the cost of pretty much everything
ext4 doesn't work at all on windows
there are no drivers for it
dang
there are compatibility layers, but they're not real filesystem drivers
ah
I went through that headache recently actually
I figured it would be a solved problem
and NTFS works fine on linux
you just can't use it as a system drive, for obvious reasons
Well, I guess I'm fixed on this mindset where I don't see why they should lock themselves in like that
you've only lived in a world where it doesn't make sense to do that
how old are you? lol
Well, I'm 17
how are drives handled on linux?
arent they just files
instead of drives on windows
yes but
but the standard way of accessing them is by attaching them to a mount point
usually on /mnt/drive
Drives on Linux can be mounted to any folder
you can do this on windows, as well.
on Windows, they're mounted to D: F: etc
^ by default, yes
yes
check this out
so here are my drives in their default layout https://i.imgur.com/fS7b52N.png
yes
I'll make a new folder at C:\mnt\portable
are they ssds?
i see
anyway
oh I can't do this with my portable drive for some reason, interesting
oh yes i can nvm
now it's gone
but accessible as a folder
so it's not an intrinsic difference between the OS, it's just a difference in default behavior.
very interesting
oh yes, I remember having to partition my installation for Arch
it was quite confusing at first
512MB EFI partition for GRUB, RAM-sized swap partition, and a btrfs root partition
optionally a separate home partition, but I've never been a fan of that
separate home would be nice if you could share it between installs
also wsl lets u mount ext4 into windows
that is actually useful
but even then, is it better than wsl?
idk, maybe I just get unlucky when it comes to certain OS's
namely Windows and Manjaro
but eventually I just run into issues I don't feel like dealing with anymore
4 hours until I get my MRI
this did not work for me when I needed it to, either
boy am I scared shitless
MRIs aren't too bad. more just annoying to sit still for that long. What are they looking for?
scared of the results, that is.
they're looking for anything irregular, i have pulsatile tinnitus, a symptom which makes me hear my heartbeat as a "woosh" sound on my ear
ah well, I'm sure it won't be too bad.
there can be a lot of underlying symptoms for said woosh,
aneurysm, TMJ,
neck tumor
only a few hours til you know the cause
best try to keep your mind focused on something else, until then
truly is the american way, hm
thank you
wait, this is a channel for installing linux ?
(the names of the off topic channels are chosen randomly every 24 hours)
oh ok
mostly inside jokes and dumb stuff we say
its off topic with a code of conduct
well, there are quite a few supply of linus', but im not sure what the demand for them is... we'll need to know the demand to calculate a cost
but the rules still apply

I'm stuck installing Linus, any helpers
does it has pirate detector, I might run into trouble
🤔 what do you mean linus
look at the channel name bruh
does it mean linux?
no, linus
i don't fucking get where this blip is coming from
@steel eagle I'm back, and I'm clear
Apparently it's just my high blood pressure, gonna have to get a diet
Exercise a little more and check my sleeping position for bad habits
Good to hear

how can I check my score on the qualifier in code jam qualifier.py
I submitted it, it says it will test it with sample inputs
I used classes to do it, is that allowed? there was no mention of it not being allowed so I assumed it was
anyone?
yeah, it's allowed
thank you
and for FWIW, you either pass or don't pass the qualifier- there's no "score" 🙂

u just posted a literal raw honeycomb
yes?
lmao
living in the countryside has its perks 😄
yes
we had geese last year
now we have some ducks and a lot of chickens
ah, and ducks made a nest
geese is a swear word in the US.
Fucking Canadian Geese. Rat bastards
aggressive, angry, mean, loud, annoying, and in the way
at least they have long strangle-able necks.

@median blade Are you the one who I showed the NVIDIA workaround thing to
I've learned of a more "permanent" solution
o
this works for you?
dunno, I've not tried
try it first :)
i don't wanna reinstall again
yeah, me neither

I may've uh... broke my phone yesterday
I was waiting for my mom in the heat, she was taking too long and I pulled out my phone...
whoops, screen crack and power go poof
bruh
Well good thing it’s a 50 50 on if you broke your phone or not
Some internal component must have litirwally melted for the power to go out
oh. I dunno
the power isn't like actually out
but it doesn't turn on
like the screen cracked it like "died", where it wasn't on anymore
it turned itself off and it won't turn back on
Wait how did the screen crack
It could’ve easily deformed but how the fuck does it crack from heat
oh. I left out the important bit
excuse me, it's 7:29 AM
I dropped the phone when I pulled it out
bruh
Nice
it didn't um... melt in pocket or anything
that is the only detail without which it doesn't make sense
like
if you drop a phone even in cold weather
also what the fuck
i'm pretty sure i saw you online a few hours ago
do you ever sleep
bruh
Do you not stay up at night?
ye-es
Loser
but not upto 7:29 am
7:30 AM
Imagine sleep
keep counting
...

the latest i've gone to sleep is like 3:30 am
You’ve never pulled an all-nighter?
I've stayed up for 48 hours once
not yet
That’s
um...
Huh
it's probably what brain death feels like
Actually kinda surprised
it's kinda... trippy
are you like
like you feel sort of numb
diagnosed with amnesia or what
and you say/do things without thinking
Oh, definitely not
I've once slept for 19 hours
interesting
You’ve never had a long flight?
man. imagine going on a flight
oh well
will actually hopefully probably be me this summer
i always s******* on flights if it's in weird hours
hsp always shitting on flights
i've always wondered how plane toilets filter poop and pee

You know what would be really funny
If the bot could edit messages

okay, I've had enough of breathing

wait that's not how that works
i too wonder what east europe looks like in the winter
I knew you were going to say something about that
idk why i capitalized that
and I was thinking about it too

I now realize that turkey is not meant to be a pronoun in this context
okay, i'm losing my thoughts

with grammar half that so about 52
so no
:(
fun fact: i'm playing with a notebook keyboard
nice
it's actually better tho
i dont find any difference in speed in either case
mechanical keyboards have heavier keys
oh ye
if you mean that way
then membrane keyboards are faster
at least for me
I'm about as fast on both
With punctuation I'm for sure way faster on my mechanical board
Just cause its layout is superior in every way
It's annoying that typeracer makes you do this though
I'm not even really sure why they do it, you can just reload the page lol
Have you tried keymash @jovial island https://keyma.sh/
eh let's take a look
oh it's definitely superior
gonna make an account
discord oauth huh
Yeah you can sign up via discord
use ctypes instead
they're faster
if you're trying to do speedy stuff, use ctypes @viral hare
i was meaning ppl botting typeracer
anyone here knows js ?
the thing about botting typeracer, is that above like 100 wpm, they have a captcha to make sure you're not a bot
you have to type wavy text at like 80 wpm iirc
what is your actual question?
because I'm sure the answer to that queston "Many people in this server know JS" will not satisfy your needs
there is no question that cant ben answered by this server
IDK about that
are you sure
Yea
yoo
windows just updated
and now grub is gone

uh oh. I locked myself out of my Google account

which I'd broken
bruh

do you have your 8-digit backup code with you?
oh, you know what
I just remembered, one second
I totally forgot I set that up with 1Password
password length reveal!?
nah, it stays the same
my password is much longer than that
like it shows that many dots for every password
Makes sense
10/10 would recommend 1Password
Got the family plan, it's pretty nice
shared passwords and stuff
HI
I need help
for my python code
so my code should not append if the output is already in txt file
let methods = {
/**
* [someMethod description]
* @param {[type]} arg1 [description]
* @param {[type]} arg2 [description]
* @return {[type]} [description]
*/
someMethod: function(arg1, arg2) {
// do stuff
},
}
Is this the appropriate format to document this method? In Python it would be underneath the definition statement. It looks weird to me. IT's because the methods are in an object and not defined on their own that it looks weird
I like this better
If you ask me, I should just do it the way I want to. Javascript isn't Python. where things are written a certain way all the time I dont think.
At least if its supposed to be that way, no one follows the rules.
Hmm
I think that in normal functions, the JSDoc documentation is above the function name() { part
I think the same could be applied for methods
Like what is shown in https://jsdoc.app/howto-es2015-classes.html
yeah, I think it is supposed to be that way but it looks terrible to me. I suppose I should get used to it if its convention.
Its just unnecessarily repeating, "Here begins the information on this function."
the definition statement covers that, then you can lead into the info
it wouldn't look as bad if I didn't have to define functions in an object.
googles making some major changes to the search engine right now i think, or at least massively looking at it and customer satisfaction. about a week ago i started getting tons of reward surveys at least 1-2 times a day about what i searched, how happy i was, how impacted i was if i said i wasnt happy, etc.
lol
uff.., says message is too long
sorry but.., how does this work
paste the code in, then press ctrl s, which changes the link, which you then copy and send here
what isn't working
the output.., it just takes the roll no. and name for the first person
and then proceeds randomly
return toppers[N]; is wrong for an array for size N
toppers[N]=store_array_of_toppers(top_cg, N, students); same here
also, what compiler are you using?
oh.., so, like, how and why and what should it be instead :')
mmmm.., codeblocks
that doesn't tell me the compiler
but alas, it is fine
an array of size N has the last index at N - 1
unless N == 0
Oh...
on a related note, add -Wall -Wextra to your compilation flags, and if your compiler supports it, also -fsanitize=undefined
it still stops after this.., like i keep on pressing enter but no help
roll no is supposed to be 8 characters, that is more
still
it stops right here
could you share the current version of the program
and well, you will your own line reading function if you want to read a string with spaces in it
Oh okay., so i didnt provide space, but it still behaved in a similar way after age
printf("Enter the data of student %d\n", i+1);
printf("Roll no.: ");
scanf("%s", students[i].roll_no);
printf("Name: ");
scanf("%s", students[i].name);
printf("Age: ");
scanf("%d",&students[i].age);
printf("sex: ");
scanf(" %c",&students[i].sex);
printf("cgpa: ");
scanf("%f",&students[i].cgpa);
```if you do this, it makes things at least somewhat work (until you have whitespace in any of the strings)
reading standard input in C is really really obnoxious
initial whitespace characters always dropped automatically (except for %c)
the output :')
welp, finally are we at the truly weird stuff
sheesh, someone barfed all over stdout
sorry
_STUDENT toppers[N]; this array in main() is only getting it's last element set, but print_array_of_students access all of the elements
this would call for drmemory or valgrind, but settings those up is annoying
or -fsanitize=address
will that catch unintialized VLA access?
Oooh, okay.., this i do get now
this i don't
those are tools to report when you do silly things like access uninitialized memory
or go out of bounds, and a bunch of other things
Hm - I'm not sure, actually.
seems no, at least with clang
boo.
ohkay.., so.., isn't there another way i could get around my problem statement without this complicated stuff? :')
@leaden hazelthe problem is also the store_array_of_toppers function, it leaves uninitialized end of the toppers local array, from which it then returns a value
Oh, cools, got it... thanks again
I selected "I give up" in the last XD
loll
win+alt+d
brings up the date time menu in the taskbar
on the uselessness scale its a solid 9.5
imagine win + alt on i3
I still wonder what win+, is for
nvm it doesnt
peek
win+d should undo win+d
hold it down and u will see the desktop
yea i was wrong
theres no shift
i just tested it
guys win + d is "wind"
yes, but why do you want to peek at your desktop
uh
lmao
idk
just want to get a good look at that sick new wallpaper ig
win+shift+m is the opposite of win+m
thanks a lot ._.
win + . is all I ever used
good evening
Good evening Joe
i'm also rocking two sweaters
good evening
how are you all
i look really stupid now using two beanies and a bath robe over my other clothes
Pretty good, how about you?
i am well thank you
Not too bad
lol
Howdy, Joe
Over the last year, PCs have kept us connected to family, friends, and enabled businesses to continue to run. This new hybrid work paradigm has got us thinking about how we will continue to deliver the best possible quality, experience, and security for the more than 1 billion people who use Windows.
Microsofts reasoning as for why TPM is required for Windows 11
interesting read
I read it, but I understood absolutely none of how any of this works
lolol
TPM is fine but wtf is the CPU compatibility list for?
Why are 2017 CPU s and below not supported
:(
Well, I guess there's some merit to that decision
in where Windows 11 won't be held back by old tech
Nah I can't see any
It's kind of an annoying situation for operating systems
like a lot of Windows features are DOS compatibility features
that's how new OS' work, it's always been that way. people running those systems will continue to get windows 10 updates, but it's fair enough if MSFT want to use newer technology/instructions, every year they backdate compatibility costs them a shit ton, so it's fair enough if they want to just do maintenance releases for older CPUs.
Hmm
Well
Ryzen 1000 and ryzen 2000 are pretty much the same except for a node change and perhaps some clocks
Its not a huge difference like fx vs ryzen architecture
Regarding intel, 7th and 8th gen are pretty much the same
So idk where MS got this list from
I mean, whatever list they produce is going to have CPU's on it that are similar to CPU's that are supported
The line has to be drawn somewhere
Sure but the line drawn is absurd
Hmm idk what to do
I have to upgrade my system but this is a bad time to do so
they didint even put ryzen 5 2400g in the list
To be completely fair, Windows 10 will have support until 2025 iirc
I'm a bit fickle minded on whether to upgrade - I have the requirements ticked and I'm not limited by the limits they imposed
I'm definitely going to
direct storage is reason enough
new start menu looks good
other than that, it's really just windows 10 with sugar on it, which microsoft has not been shy about stating themselves.
Does the Ryzen 1000 support all of the instructions the 2000 does?
I am going to hazard a guess that mfst's choice in CPUs is closely linked to the instructions/technology that they support
oh lol, just replied to a message that's from >7 hours ago
yikes
Umm
Idk that
What I do know is that zen+ is a refresh of zen1 on 12 nm I guess
Most of the stuff has to be same idk
Also, both use the same mobo
The b350
X370
Yea true, What I'm trying to say is that mfst wouldn't lock themselves out of the market share of users using old CPUs unless there was a good reason
Hmm yeah
Anyways I need a new pc now
Gotta get DDR5 support 😋
There are only a few things which cause outbound gateway events; initial login to discord, heartbeats every 40 or so seconds, and presence changes, that's about it
only that?
There's a couple more like resuming sessions, but they're so rare they barely need to be thought about
So why gateway limit is 120/minutes?
Honestly, no clue
They probably should make it like 10 perm minutes or so
It's shared between shards though, so bear in mind if you have a ton of shards you could get pretty close to that limit because of all the shard heartbeats
Ahh, gotcha
wait
Does gateway limit also got increased if the number of guilds the bot is in increased?
I heard rate limits can be increased if the bot have much guild
Not that I know of, although for massive bots it probably does
For large bots (150,000+) guilds, discord increases the ratelimits
Older chip lock out is 100% TPM 2.0 requirement, my gaming rig isn't Windows 11 compatible for same reason
Find an overview of Windows 11 specs and features from Microsoft. Learn about Windows 11 computer requirements and more helpful information.
Apparently Microsoft will have more information on that at later date, it's possible they drop it/lower it, it's also going to be a problem for IT people if Windows 2022 server requires TPM chip since secure boot isn't a thing for many
Why would there be activation issues?
They've been overhauled.
hold on that's a bad ss
