I think people often forget that opensource is made by a bunch of people and it doesn't indicate that the code itself is safe. It may or may not be a group of syndicate placing a malicious code into the program trapping unsuspecting users. The only way it could be deemed safe if it is verified and tested by professionals or is from a credible and official repository

We don't have fake honey much here because of EU forbidding fakes from using real name. So fake butter will have eg similar adjectives ("buttery", "milky", etc) written on the label resembling real butter labels so people are visually fooled... But they cannot in any place claim to be a butter.
