You can get a handful of 16GB or 32GB flash drives, plug them into a computer, plug the phone into the same computer, copy/paste, and do that every so often

#

Easiest backup I can think of πŸ˜„

#

Yeah I store my pictures on 2 SD card's, so if my system gets fucked or something happens with the device which has all the pictures stored I'll have copies in 2 SD card's.

#

That's why I say handful, because one backup isn't actually backup.

#

Also, test your backups and make sure they work

wanton glacier
#

having an insecure password to get into a device isn't as much of a security risk as you think it is

#

if someone has physical access to a device, it's bad

#

you have worse problems

#

definitely get her to try and improve the security though

rough sapphire
#

@wanton glacier

if someone has physical access to a device, it's bad
Depends on the device I think

wanton glacier
#

to an extent

undone berry
#

having a phone password of 1234 is probably a very bad idea. People casually picking up your phone at an event will have easy access - so that's a real risk

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry That implies you lose it, sure.

#

Having a phone with no password, that's just a dead end to her data. ☠️

sand goblet
#

I use syncthing to back up media like that

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire Not really. How many people are going to be accessing that device?

sand goblet
#

no point using SD cards when it can be automatic

rough sapphire
#

I mean, you never know when she can lose the phone and whatnot.

#

Sure, but that's why I said if you feel it's an issue, discuss these things with her.

sand goblet
#

by the way, setting a password - any password - on android these days also encrypts the storage

rough sapphire
#

But most of the time, family member's, they're not interested in her phone of course, but someone else might.

#

@sand goblet Yep, the forceencrypt setting and all

wanton glacier
#

just encourage her to set any password even if it's a bit shit

rough sapphire
#

Since her phone isn't locked, someone who gets their hands on it can just wipe the device and sell it or something.

#

@rough sapphire @wanton glacier Considering this isn't @rough sapphire's device, the most you can do here is sit down and discuss this with her. If she says no, what really are you going to do?

#

Her birth date, put her current age in the middle of her birth date would be kinda secure? My birth date is 2004 and I'm 15 so my password would look like this: 2154, you can remember it as soon as you know how old you are lol.

#

@rough sapphire Until they forget it, or remove it because it impedes unlocking the device.

undone berry
#

Well - I'm guessing that's what he means by encourage. Explain the potential risks, and provide a solution. If it's a relatively modern phone, there's probably a mechanism to keep it unlocked when it's actually at home (I know my mum does that with her note8)

rough sapphire
#

Which this is just the reason I suggest implementing a fingerprint πŸ˜„

#

Yeah she also has a fingerprint scanner.

#

Then yeah, you can discuss the pros/cons to it

undone berry
#

in fairness, I don't think i'd care all that much if my mum didn't have a password on her phone. The potential risk is fairly low

rough sapphire
#

But it ultimately boils down to it's not your device, and forcing your will upon other people isn't a good idea.

#

@undone berry That's where I'm at as well. I understand good security hygiene and all, but they have to be the one that implements. Saying "This is what you have to do now, tough." isn't going to make them interested in continuing down a security-conscious road.

#

Just gonna suggest her to setup some kind of protection on her phone.

rough sapphire
#

Hey can someone tell me whether there's a way for me to host my bot from a mobile device? Android is really getting on my nerves with it's task killing spree, as soon as I switch to another app Termux just gets shutdown...

#

Wait, I'll try to create my bot a background task that will do some mathematical operations, I think this should keep Termux running?

#

Cause of the bot constantly waiting for API responses.

#

And not receiving anything for some time.

graceful basin
#

you could potentially make your own android app that would run the bot in a notification, those should not get stopped arbitrarily

rough sapphire
#

I don't know how to create an Android app nor do I have access to a computer to begin with.

#

Termux also runs from a notification bar, IDK???

#

The "wakelock" also isn't really working.

#

Right

#

You normally don't want to run a bot from Android

#

You can get a VPS for $5/month, or get a Pi and host it there

#

Some Android devices are incredibly strict when it comes to killing background processes

#

@rough sapphire this

#

Whether your device is affected by this, I couldn't tell you.

#

Yeah Huawei is kinda bad, I would've rooted my tablet before but since Huawei doesn't give out free bootloader codes, I'm quite limited.

#

I'm thinking of buying a Raspberry Pi, but not for now.

#

lol huawei

#

i have one too

#

its not a bad phone even tho it maybe banned in some places

#

The next phone/tablet won't be Huawei for sure, I'm annoyed.

#

why so

#

i didnt have problems with mine

#

and its 5 yrs old lol

#

Cause I can't root it?
I don't receive any updates for my tablet, well, I didn't receive any when it had warranty. I have some mixed feelings about Huawei but I'm more to hating it than loving it.

#

lol

#

Yeah, that's an issue

#

Probably a Samsung device, I mean Samsung is partnered with Discord so you can have rich presence with Samsung's game launcher.

#

@sand goblet and I both have OnePlus devices, and I personally like mine, so Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

#

That's what I'd recommend

#

That's what I'm currently aiming cause I don't really have anything else I want besides for rooting.

undone berry
#

No. They're teaching how to write code the way they know how. Those kinds of getters are standard in many other languages. And honestly, it's really not too problematic that people get taught that way. They'll be more comfortable going to java or c# this way

bleak rain
#

It's problematic. My eyes hurt from it

undone berry
#

Don't get me wrong, it ain't great. I just don't think it's too egregious

bleak rain
#

I have a deep-seated hatred for java, but I'm sure that would go away if I actually gave it a fair chance

Man imagine being depressed at this time

bleak rain
#

this post was made by introvert gang

rough sapphire
#

Bro

#

I'm an extrovert ;-;

#

For all of the people that are depressed i wish you a great life

bleak rain
#

I'm extrovert too

#

I'm in fact hyper extrovert but I suck hard at being extroverted so that's why I try horseshoe myself into an introvert guy

#

I reckon they live much more comfier lives

sand goblet
#

Neither is better

bleak rain
#

Neither is better
this sounds good but I cannot for the life of me internalize it

sand goblet
#

They just both have their advantages and disadvantages

#

Neither is better, they're just different

bleak rain
#

I absolutely despise people but I'm still cursed with a very prominent need to socialize

#

Yes, but to me their advantages outweigh the disadvantages by miles

#

Basically, if I could just be content with progressing with my own individual projects or whatever at home and not feel the need to meet up with a friend etc then I would have literally no need to feel depressed

#

I would quite literally have a happy life, it's the single thing that has bothered me for several years now

celest tide
#

introverts lose energy in social settings whereas extroverts gain - there's not really much else to it

bleak rain
#

Yes, but that brings with it a whole slew of implications

sand goblet
#

Not as many as you're assuming

celest tide
#

personally i think you're assuming way too much

bleak rain
#

personally I don't think so

celest tide
#

have at it then

bleak rain
#

Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

#

I wish there was some way to get a fulfilling resolution to discussion like these but they all kinda just peter out

#

Maybe it's because of my stubbornness pithink

celest tide
#

sure, because you make statements like

content with progressing with my own individual projects or whatever at home and not feel the need to meet up with a friend etc then I would have literally no need to feel depressed

which aren't really true

sand goblet
#

Yeah that's not really anything to do with it

#

Everyone needs people in some capacity

bleak rain
#

That is not what I am trying to say

celest tide
#

it seems like you've read memes about introverts on reddit and taken them a bit too seriously

bleak rain
#

I have many friends that are introverts that describe literally the mirror images of introvert memes

celest tide
#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ maybe they're talking nonsense

#

if they're talking about literally living the life described by memes then that seems likely to me

bleak rain
#

An introvert is generally better at harnessing energy from solitary projects

#

As in, "yaaay painting me want to paint now! woooo"

#

That is the holy grail that I'm after

undone berry
#

given that you're self-professed as being non-introverted

bleak rain
#

Imagine what superpowers I could get from that, I could move mountains

undone berry
#

i'm not sure how much you should read into what you think it's like to be introverted

bleak rain
#

Again, I happen to have plenty of friends and relatives that have given me their input on it

celest tide
#

the memes are true lol

undone berry
#

comes across as arrogant or preachy telling other people what it's like to be like them if you're self-professed not that. Same as a white person shouldn't try and tell a black person what it's like to be black

bleak rain
#

I have the motivation but my energy gain from social stuff is completely worthless because I think social stuff is so goddamn boring, even if it energizes me

celest tide
#

nah they've done research apparently - but yeah @bleak rain , it comes across as pretty daft

undone berry
#

I'm not all that interested in getting in the discussion - just pointing out that as Rie says, it comes across as pretty daft

#

whether true or not

celest tide
#

because you seem to be making the assumption that you'd be some sort of uber introvert that would achieve greatness through mega focus

#

you're probably an average extrovert, you'd probably be an average introvert too

bleak rain
#

Great, but you can't just say "you're wrong because you can't possibly know"

celest tide
#

you've given more material to work with than that

bleak rain
#

Now you are the one making assumptions

celest tide
#

i'm reading the thread πŸ™ƒ

bleak rain
#

And yet again, I have twenty or so friends which I have all talked with about this, it's all the same

celest tide
#

haven't you got a party to go to?

#

man if i was an extrovert, think of all the parties i'd go to

undone berry
#

I've been on the dumb end of discussions like this before, and one thing I've learned is that if everyone thinks you're being dumb - there's quite a good chance you are; and that future you will realise that you're being dumb

bleak rain
#

I thought I was making blanket statements but you guys are killing it over here

undone berry
#

blank statements often look dumb

#

white people hate spicy food <- that sounds dumb as shit

bleak rain
#

but they do though

#

:^)

celest tide
#

i think i'm done πŸ‘

bleak rain
#

Yeah, I do go to parties a lot, but because of reasons I hate it every single time

#

I realize that sounds like a flex but introverts that thinks like that are completely on the wrong track

#

and yes, I realize that this statement can be turned against me

#

But I would still give an arm and a leg to become an introvert

rough sapphire
#

I'm introvert technically because I get my energy from inside. The part of me that truly shines shines alone. But... I'm not incapable of sharing that with people. I don't really attend parties that often anymore though. I'm more likely to get together with one person or one couple.

sand goblet
#

I'm extroverted in the sense that I can get along with basically anyone

#

but I'm introverted in that I spend most of my time alone at my desk and will not go to parties, just spending time with one or two people

rough sapphire
#

Coronavirus aside, my friends just do not all have free time at the same time anymore. Most of my friends have kids. Parties become impractical.

#

I did enjoy it when I was younger tho

#

I'm better at meeting new people in groups though.

#

If I don't know someone, I won't talk to them at all unless they talk to me, out of fear mainly that they will interpret it as being too.... familiar.

#

But if there is a group, you can talk to the group and its not familiar at all.

#

So thats easier for me.

What languages other than python are good for discord bots? I want to try something new. I've heard about bots on JS and Go, are there other viable options?

undone berry
#

JS is probably the biggest non-python option. But afaik most languages have a bot framework. Kotlin has one that is apparently pretty good

graceful basin
#

clojure recently got a solid lib as well

#

prolog is possible, though probably not a bright idea

rough sapphire
#

Thought about Rust also

graceful basin

rust seems excessive for a discord bot

rough sapphire

Well, I mostly do it all for learning, The bot I have right now is split into d.py client and django rest framework server on postgres db, all dockerized

It feels like something a Wh40k ork mek would create though, but I'm still proud

@smoky frigate you could try implementing a really small Forth

smoky frigate
#

What's Forth?

worn rampart
#

it's a kind of programming language. Have you ever heard of post-fix notation?

#

make a simple postfix notation calculator first if you're going to do that

#

usually, math is written like this: (5 + 2) * 3

#

however, it's not the only way to write it

#

forth and simpler postfix calculators have a concept of a stack

#

the above expression could be written as 5 2 + 3 *

#

it could also be written as 5 2 3 + *

faint fossil
#

hi

#

i want to get into python

#

but i dont know what IDE should i use

#

i have basic understanding of c++ and c

worn rampart
#

#tools-and-devops might be the best place to ask that , but the short version is use whatever IDE you feel most comfortable with

#

if you want to do C/C++ as well, and are on Windows, Visual Studio or VSCode might be the way to go.

#

If you've used JetBrains tools before, PyCharm might be better.

faint fossil
#

okaayy

#

thxx

worn rampart
#

@smoky frigate postfix make a bit of sense so far?

smoky frigate
#

Yeah

worn rampart
#

forth sort of builds on the idea of a calculator like that

#

but adds additional features

#

there are a lot of different forths, and they're a very old family of languages

smoky frigate
#

Oh, okay. I'll try to make one soon

worn rampart
#

start with a stack-based postfix calculator

#

How new to python are you? @smoky frigate

smoky frigate
#

about 4-5 years of experienct

worn rampart
#

ok I won't break up the task in depth then unless you ask me to

smoky frigate
#

I can handle postfix, it's not too hard

worn rampart
#

lol

#

beware that the prompt freezes if you have an underflow in the stack

#

and you'll have to refresh the page

#

i want to eventually implement my own forth in python as a step towards making my own in assembly for some esoteric systems, but I think I need to use existing forths more first.

smoky frigate
#

Ohhh

worn rampart
#

also do more assembly

rough sapphire
#

First time hearing of Forth

smoky frigate
#

x64 assembly is ouch

rough sapphire
#

Is it like "do these operations with these numbers, read each category of them left-to-right"?

worn rampart
#

it pushes the numbers onto a stack

#

then applies operators as it sees them

#

so

#

a + in the tokens list takes the top two numbers off the stack, adds them, and puts the sum on top

graceful basin
#

Forth has some other interesting features like mixing compilation and interpretation state

worn rampart
#

you can also define your own words in it

graceful basin
#

And powerful metaprogramming

rough sapphire
#

I see

#

Kinda want to program one in JS, now that I know what it is

#

At least a part of it

worn rampart
#

there's a pretty nice public domain forth out there, pforth

smoky frigate
#

Challenge: Do it in webasm

worn rampart
#

there's also a GNU one but it's GPL or AGPL

#

and i think pforth might be more portable because they explicitly tried to write in only ANSI C

graceful basin
#

Y'know what would be fun. A forth discord bot

worn rampart
#

a discord bot in forth?

graceful basin
#

Ye

undone berry
#

I dunno - the three already on this server do pretty much everything (/s)

worn rampart
#

lmao

#

from the little i've read so far, strings are fairly unintuitive in forth

smoky frigate
#

You have to handle syscalls too, which is a bit tough

graceful basin
#

Forth is great at abstraction, but yes, strings would be obnoxious

worn rampart
#

in my view the best thing about forths is that seems like a good middle language to write another interpreter in

graceful basin
#

Especially since the memory management is much more contrived than C

worn rampart
#

like lisp or something

#

also, yeah, the memory management is something i don't understand

#

you can allocate memory, but how does that happen if the forth interpreter is running on bare metal?

#

you have to roll it yourself in ASM?

#

and/or C?

graceful basin
#

Forth has a runtime

worn rampart
#

runtimes

#

i think, if i understand what you mean correctly

#

there are a lot of forths

graceful basin
#

As well, it is an interpreted language

#

Not what I meant

smoky frigate
#

Hmm, yes, you might have to call malloc

#

Or calloc

graceful basin
#

Most languages have a runtime (essentially a program that handles running the language itself embedded into the executable). C I am pretty sure does not, but C++ might

smoky frigate
#

c++ most likely doesnt

graceful basin
#

The definition is a bit shakey

#

Well, things like exceptions and vtables probably need a runtime to manage, but since those only come into play when used, it is not quite a runtime in the traditional sense

worn rampart
#

is there a strict definition of what a runtime is?

graceful basin

No

i sort of adapted my own style after school made me do touch typing

I write with a weird bastardization of both methods, if I focus on purely touch typing, I end up slower, mostly because during programming, almost all symbols are on the right pinky
@graceful basin
I used to do that. My guess is if you spent a couple of weeks forcing yourself to touch type properly, you'd end up in a better place

graceful basin
#

probably, but breaking about a decade of practice is hard

unique warren
#

My old speed was 22 wpm

#

When I was 14

brittle timber
#

i remember typing with one fingers then two

#

i actually did okay with just two fingers

#

then i started doing touch typing practices, learned "proper" gestures, and went on from there

unique warren
#

Can you type with one hand

brittle timber
#

i mean

#

i guess i can

unique warren
#

Well I am doing my test again

brittle timber
#

i do type one handed if i'm eating sometimes

#

since i memorize the keyboard enough

#

i'm doing it right now

unique warren
#

Ok

brittle timber
#

same

rough sapphire
#

I can

#

But

#

it's slow

#

as hell

unique warren
#

I will send a screen shot soon

#

I mean if you type without seeing the keyboard

#

It’s good

trail hollow
#

What's taking time is when you type wrong then stop to looking what is the correct letter in the keyboard

unique warren
brittle timber
#

imma try one handed

#

brb

unique warren
#

Ok

#

I bet your speed will be 10 wpm

brittle timber
#

h

undone berry
#

That is a very funky test- I was getting errors on spaces and stuff where I'm like 99% sure I wasn't typoing

brittle timber
#

gonna try again two handed

unique warren
#

Typing also depends on keyboard

#

I use a normal keyboard

#

Some people use mechanical

brittle timber
unique warren
trail hollow
#

Does this test related to coding skill?

unique warren
#

Is it one minute?

#

Or full page?

brittle timber
#

i used a different site

#

if you'd like, you can give me a site to type on

trail hollow
#

I mean like hackerman typing godspeed on movies

unique warren
#

Ok

brittle timber
#

nah, it's just typing out paragraphs of random text

#

though typing faster can make you more productive

#

because you can write out what you're thinking much faster

unique warren
#

Try this test

brittle timber
#

i'll do the minute test

unique warren
#

Ok

brittle timber
#

i... made a mistake, though? but ok

solid pollen
#

Rounded up perhaps?

brittle timber

I once had this kind of test for a customer support job, pretty sure my speed is above 100.

#

Back when I was young

#

πŸ˜‘

brittle timber
#

h

#

i can only get above 100+ wpm on my macbook, because it has a smaller keyboard

#

on my mech keyboard the spacing and keysize are different, and i'm not used to it

#

not to mention the keys have to be pressed down further than my laptop

unique warren
brittle timber
#

so i'm usually around 90wpm on my mech keyboard

sand goblet
#

I'm faster on a mechanical keyboard but my partner needs low profile domes or butterfly switches

#

Everyone's different

unique warren
#

I guess I will practice

brittle timber
#

i've been on a macbook pro since 2011

#

and i've been using apple keyboards since 2007

sand goblet
#

The same MacBook pro?

brittle timber
#

so yeah, my hands are basically molded to the keyboard

unique warren
#

If your MacBook that’s touch typing

brittle timber
#

nah, but their keyboard standards haven't changed that much

sand goblet
#

Fair

brittle timber
#

as in the spacing between keys and actuation and such

sand goblet
#

I couldn't recommend a MacBook today at the prices they're asking, but the keyboard seems really good

brittle timber
#

the 2012-2014 macbook pros are my favorite

sand goblet
#

But of course you can just buy the keyboard!

brittle timber
#

i hate the newer ones

#

the newer ones have a different feel to the keys and they actuate way less

#

and they're also a bit too clicky for my tastes

#

the keys are also much thinner

sand goblet
#

Clickyclacky is good imo

brittle timber
#

clicky is nice when not in excess

sand goblet
#

I have blue switches

#

That should say it all

unique warren
#

You guys wanna see my keyboard?

brittle timber
#

sure

#

switch wise i think brown is the clickiest i can take

#

blues are too loud and take too much to actuate

unique warren
brittle timber
#

though recently i've taken an interest in padded reds

#

it feels like you're pressing on cushions and they're so comfy

#

i love it

#

not to mention the bonus effect of them being somewhat quiet because of the cushioning

unique warren
#

Lol i was doing typing test on my carpet

topaz aurora
unique warren
#

Woah what website is this?

topaz aurora
unique warren
#

It’s nice they advice to take a 2 minute break

topaz aurora
#

So no punctuation, just words

undone berry
topaz aurora
#

I'll go ahead and try that out

undone berry
topaz aurora
unique warren
topaz aurora
#

I really should learn to use my thumb for space

unique warren
#

Why am I fast in this website?

#

Yea

#

My today’s target is to reach 100 wpm

undone berry
#

how can you use anything besides the thumb for space??

topaz aurora
#

Though keyboards either being too small or too big for me to comfortably hit space with either of my thumb does not help

undone berry
#

from the sounds of it

#

your hands are in terrible positions

split shadow
#

71wpm for me :P

topaz aurora
#

I got used to floating my thumbs/other fingers because of rhythm games

trail hollow
#

is that?

topaz aurora
#

I typically don't have my palm flat on the surface

trail hollow
#

your hand?

undone berry
#

you don't want your palm to be flat on anything

unique warren
#

My hands hurt now

#

I think so 50 wpm is good for me

prisma geyser
#

Hey I have a question related to android dev

#

I know it's very off topic but maybe you guys could help as usual

#

Okay! So I have an app which has two activities, the first activity appears once, only when the user starts the app for the first time.

#

This first activity takes a user input and passes it to the second activity which then displays it

#

So I expect to see this whenever I open my app, but in my case, I see an empty screen when I open my app again

#

Here's the code for my first activity:

#
    String prevStarted = "prevStarted";
    EditText editText;
    @Override
    protected void onResume() {
        super.onResume();
        SharedPreferences sharedpreferences = getSharedPreferences(getString(R.string.app_name), Context.MODE_PRIVATE);
        if (!sharedpreferences.getBoolean(prevStarted, false)) {
            SharedPreferences.Editor editor = sharedpreferences.edit();
            editor.putBoolean(prevStarted, Boolean.TRUE);
            editor.apply();
        } else {
            Intent intent=new Intent(this,MainActivity2.class);
            intent.putExtra("nameID",editText.getText().toString());
            startActivity(intent);

        }
    }

    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
        editText=findViewById(R.id.myName);

    }

    public void openSecondary(View view) {
        Intent intent=new Intent(this,MainActivity2.class);
        intent.putExtra("nameID",editText.getText().toString());
        startActivity(intent);

    }
}```
#

And here's for the second:

#
    TextView textView;

    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main2);
        Intent intent=getIntent();
        final String value=intent.getStringExtra("nameID");
        textView=findViewById(R.id.myTextView);
        textView.setText(value);
    }
#

So is there a way that my data from the first activity stays saved in the second even after my first activity doesn't exist any more?

gentle moss
#

boooo

#

oh wait nvm, scrolled up

gentle moss
#

it's these types of tests that trip me up @undone berry

#

not being able to go back and correct slows me down a bunch

#

i'll just blame the laptop keyboard
