Does anyone know of a good video course on Kotlin for beginners

graceful basin
#

if you already know java, the kotlin koans are nice to get you started

#

not a video though

solid pollen
#

The best one if you already okay with python would be kotlin for python devs

#

Not a video either though

prisma geyser
#

I don’t know Java 😕

#

Ok! Can you send me the link for kotlin for python

solid pollen
#

Sure

rough sapphire
#

how different is kotlin from scala... I'm familiar with scala and how it's used for data engineering, but don't really know what kotlin is used for besides android

plucky ridge
#

Kotlin is practical for any place that you'd use Java or the JVM

#

It's fully interoperable and compatible with all Java libs (to my knowledge)

#

As far as I know it doesn't have any specific niche it fills

#

It's just meant to be a more pleasant alternative to Java so you can use the JVM

rough sapphire
#

scala is also compatible with java libs.. except it's not always straightforward to call java code from it

graceful basin
#

ye, kotlin is just better java 8 (the difference is not that large with newer versions, though kotlin is still better), which makes it quite convenient for the legacy codebases where java8 is still in use

#

well, the thing about kotlin is it is often nicer to write idiomatic java code in kotlin than in java

rough sapphire
#

ahhh ok

sand goblet
#

Scala is a functional-first language as well

rough sapphire
#

yeah I'm familiar with it.. built some stuff to start services through api requests.. the downside is it that it's not supported at most major companies

#

but Kotlin is..

#

so has me second guessing

plucky ridge
#

Kotlin is like smooshing Python and Java together

#

I mainly just wanted a reason to say "smoosh"

rough sapphire
#

lol

graceful basin
#

kotlin is also nice because it lets you use some functional patterns, and can have values which are guaranteed to be non-null

rough sapphire
#

I would try to pick this up if there were some data engineering related resources for this

sand goblet
#

Yeah, kotlin is null-safe for the most part

plucky ridge
#

The Kotlin you write will be

sand goblet
#

Java was used in the data science world for a very long time so.. use those tools and write kotlin?

plucky ridge
#

But any Java libraries might still have their booby traps

sand goblet
#

Yup

plucky ridge
#

As far as I understand

graceful basin
#

though any java interop assumes nullable

sand goblet
#

It doesn't

#

You can get tripped up when a java library doesn't declare something nullable that can be

#

Like a function return

graceful basin
#

does it not? When I tried it, everything from java was nullable

plucky ridge
#

By default?

sand goblet
#

It's a bit smarter than that, but it can't catch every case

prisma geyser
#

Can Kotlin be called a general purpose programming language

#

Or is it limited to app dev only?

graceful basin
#

it is definitely general purpose

solid pollen
#

Its safeness makes it applicable in a large number of fields actually

raspberry pi 4 has an 8 GB model now, neato

plucky ridge
#

Wait, 8gb of ram?

#

Man that's nuts

rough sapphire
#

they aren't saying this is coming out, but they also hint at the possibility of a 16GB variant as well

#

I bought a 4 GB one the other week with a 64GB sdhc card to run a django application that manages this distributed scraping thing I'm working on

#

whats cool with these vs running on a "normal" server is you can use the GPIO pins to output noise to speakers or colors to RGB leds for alerts and stuff. these things are awesome

plucky ridge
#

"Yep, every time someone downloads a file from my server, it makes a small fart sound."

#

I.... want to do that project more than I'd like to admit

rough sapphire
#

you can fulfill your dreams with this

plucky ridge

It would have to be one of those squeakers, you know?

Probably does show off how tired I am when that's my big asperation for the day

hey, big projects can have humble beginnings lol

plucky ridge

"So my new product, the iPoot, will inform you exactly when a user interacts with your site. Judging by the tone, intensity, and as we call it "dampness" of the noises it produces, it will tell you just how they're doing."

#

This is why I shouldn't be allowed to have a keyboard

#

@royal laurel I make no excuses for my terrible jokes

royal laurel
#

lmao

plucky ridge
#

Normally it's just puns but for some reason, that popped into my head

royal laurel
#

the only thing i remember raspberry pi of, is a friend that was insulin dependent and used one for her medication

plucky ridge
#

To like distribute the right amounts or something?

royal laurel
#

mmhm

plucky ridge
#

Oh that's really handy

royal laurel
#

OpenAPS

#

She had severe type 1 and could never be without a machine injecting her with insulin

plucky ridge
#

Glad there was a workable solution at least

#

In years past it likely would have either meant a death sentence or being bed ridden

royal laurel
#

It's quite the project

plucky ridge
#

Artificial Pancreas
Band name

royal laurel
#

openaps is Open Artificial Pancreas System. It's such an interesting topic.

#

A true cyborg organ

plucky ridge
#

Does make me wonder how long of a charge the battery pack would offer

#

And it just worries me because there are several potential points of failure. That's not a criticism of the system, just kind of the inevitability of a system needing that many separate pieces.

#

It really is crazy how we're stepping closer and closer into world as shown by Deus Ex

rough sapphire
#

in this use case you definitely want it to fail fast and in a way where the user gets alerted quickly

royal laurel
#

the software underclocks the pi to make battery last longer when it's low

plucky ridge
#

Just makes me wonder if it wouldn't benefit from something lower maintenance like an arduino unit or what have you.

#

Potentially less bulky that way as well

#

On the flip side of this, it is kind of sad that we've gotten to the point where we have to create our own ways to do medical things.

royal laurel
#

She got sued

#

And won

#

They tried to make it illegal because apparently it was a "threat"

rough sapphire
#

a threat?

plucky ridge
#

The medical industry isn't used to seeing something like the open source market

#

It'll be interesting to see things slowly adapt as tech gets cheaper and potentially safer

#

But I do also foresee a lot of unnecessary accidental harm coming from less than legit biohacking options

#

There is something to be said about all the hoops that those things have to get through before they reach a consumer

royal laurel
#

I remember this very specific update to the algorithm, my friend was so happy

#

Apparently their math is incredibly specific

plucky ridge
#

Likely due to the floating point calculations it has to do

#

Those are always a potential irritant

#

A mg off in either direction could mean life or death

#

So precision is paramount

royal laurel
#

Also the FDA already authorized a copy of that system from a lab, of course

#

8000$

rough sapphire
#

it sounds like there is a lot of opportunities for open source projects in the medical field

plucky ridge
#

Not surprising. Although I tend to think of that stuff in the same way I think about car maintenance. While I could probably fix stuff myself on my vehicle, I'd rather have it done by a professional, so that if it goes wrong, I at least have someone to blame and/or know how to fix it

rough sapphire
#

I know very little of the industry/field, other than a lot of treatments can be extremely expensive

plucky ridge
#

I'm not meaning to sound negative to the project, it's incredible and I'd love to see more things like it

#

But it just makes me worry quite a lot at the same time

#

If there's a slipup in the code anywhere, that could be hundreds of lives on the line

royal laurel
#

The point of OpenAPS was to make it accessible by everyone by not signing with a lab brand

plucky ridge
#

Right, and I'm all for that for sure

rough sapphire
#

perhaps there should be some non-bureaucratic validation process. like it gets reviewed by a small team of doctors and programmers

plucky ridge
#

These are the things I love seeing come out of programming and tech

royal laurel
#

It does

rough sapphire
#

I think stuff like this is definitely a step in the right direction

plucky ridge
#

Agreed

rough sapphire
#

if it does, then great

royal laurel
#

Aside from that, OpenAPS is not responsible of misuse because it's just an algorithm

#

It's up to people to use good quality hardware

#

Which is, I assume, why the FDA version is so expensive

#

Aside from lobby

plucky ridge
#

Sure

#

The scenario I'm seeing in my head is someone uses one of these setups and passes away from an accident somewhere in the chain. Who ends up paying for the accident?

#

Just feels like a potential litigation nightmare

#

I think I'm just a worrier

#

That's probably what it is

royal laurel
#

True, but it has never happened

#

Never a single hiccup

plucky ridge
#

Right, but all potential outcomes need to be considered

#

Like you said, people need to make sure they're using good tech

royal laurel
#

Oh absolutely

plucky ridge
#

And it's not unlikely that someone might not use the best or be able to afford the best

royal laurel
#

i think this is the best shot regarding that

plucky ridge
#

But honestly, reading about this makes me really happy. There's enough strife and hardship and death around as it, so the idea of people coming together to make something like that to help make lives better really does encourage me

#

Very cool

royal laurel
#

I feel so happy for the young people using it

plucky ridge
#

royal laurel

I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM a couple days ago and they JUST NOW released the 8GB option. Whyyyyy

tulip palm
#

wait that's a thing?

zinc cave
#

Yes!

tulip palm
#

oh how fancy

zinc cave
#

I wondered why they were selling the 2GB for the same as a 1GB... ($35)

#

I should have known something was up, considering the official website said the 2GB was $45. Oh well.

tulip palm
#

yup, happens to the best of us

zinc cave
#

All the more reason to have 2 Pis later on! lol

tulip palm
#

although at least your complaint just informed me of a very compelling pi model, so i might get one or two at some point for some projects. ^^

zinc cave
#

Well, glad some good could come of my misfortune, lol

mental bison
#

I expected a server about coding to have more bots

bleak lintel
#

@mental bison we don't add any third party bots to this server

royal laurel
#

Any particular reason?

#

Or just out of the ecosystem lifestyle

rough sapphire
rough sapphire
#

@zinc cave depending on what you need the 1GB ones may be all you need, might as well save the money

zinc cave
#

@rough sapphire This is true. However, I planned on using the RPi as a secondary computer that I can also leave running to host my Discord bot. And in the future, maybe even a website or game server. I spent a little under $200 on components besides a keyboard and mouse (I have quite a few of those lying around), so the $20 extra for 4 more GB of RAM would have been nice.

#

The monitor contributed to almost half of that budget, so it wasn't too bad considering.

rough sapphire
#

@zinc cave aside from my 1GB pi-3 I also have the 4GB pi-4. 4gb is still quite a lot to work with. I haven't done this with mine (yet) but I think you can disable the desktop to further save RAM

#

the 1GB one I got is just a lightweight flask app with a REST API running selenium, so it serves as a worker doing distributed scraping

#

for that it works perfectly

#

to add to using the 4 GB one- you'd use SSH to access it then

#

well for any of them really lol

zinc cave
#

Huh, I see. I'm not familiar with a lot of the terms you've used tbh. Idk what 'flask app', 'REST API', 'selenium', 'scraping', or 'SSH' is. I have heard the term 'SSH' used before, but only vaguely know what it is. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this matter.

rough sapphire
#

no you're perfectly fine

fallen sparrow
#

Just curious why choose a Pi if you're planning to use it as a desktop? Pretty sure even an ancient Core 2 Duo would run circles around the Pi's CPU, and if you need something smaller there's NUCs, those compute sticks etc. I always imagined Pis mainly for the embedded use case or at least something with GPIOs.

rough sapphire
#

flask application is just a web application, REST API is a way services can communicate, selenium is a library that faciliates scraping, scraping is just extracting data from web pages, and SSH is accessing servers remotely. so if you have a 'headless' machine (no monitor, just powered on and connected with ethernet) you can still do anything you could do normally with it.... install applications, configure settings, etc

#

it works as a very cheap desktop with very low power consumption

zinc cave
#

Oh, I understand.

#

Thanks for explaining that for me.

rough sapphire
#

np

#

there are community made bots, @royal lake and @median dome, which are open source on https://github.com/python-discord
@bleak lintel @mental bison we also have @polar knoll (which is also open source, but not our bot per se)

zinc cave
#

And yeah, what Mark said about low power consumption. x64 architecture is power hungry and inefficient and not suitable to leave running unless power is of no concern.

rough sapphire
#

its a pretty cool niche that it fills

zinc cave
#

It really is. I'm glad that my Dad brought up the RPi 3 he hadn't set up with RetroPie yet, because that got me thinking about it, and I realized how much I wanted one after that.

fallen sparrow
#

Hmm I guess so, but x64 opens up a whole bunch of applications/OS you can run. When you mention $200 I'm thinking you can get a decent used PC/laptop for that

zinc cave
#

Yes, you can run more stuff, but at the cost of increasing power consumption by like 5× or so

#

There is nothing more satisfying than the thought of running a Pi at full clock but consumes 1/3 the power of my current monitor.

rough sapphire
#

passive cooling too, which further drives down power

#

assuming its in a good environment, it can run for a very long time without any sort of maintenence

zinc cave
#

Yeah, passive cooling is always great, but a little fan only takes up to a watt, and that removes any throttling problems.

rough sapphire
#

I went the passive route (on my 3 at least) so I could use the GPIO pins, specifically the power sources

zinc cave
#

Yeah, that makes sense.

rough sapphire
#

when it reads web pages for my use case, it alerts me if there is certain matches for keywords and is attached to a buzzer and bright RGB led

#

1000x more attention getting than an sms or email lol

zinc cave
#

That sounds pretty dope, actually.

#

Nice use really

rough sapphire
#

yeah I love these things, and mixing python with hardware stuff

#

there is actually a python library FOR the gpio pins actually

#

if you didn't know that already

fallen sparrow
#

What website? so we can wake you up at 12am

zinc cave
#

Really? What does that do?

rough sapphire
zinc cave
#

Ohhhh, right. Okay.

#

Control stuff attached to it.

rough sapphire
#

@fallen sparrow :x

#

yeah it makes it very easy. and just the concept of having python interface with the physical world is exciting to me, whether its outputting signals to the pins, or reading whatever sensors/input devices attached

zinc cave
#

Yeah, it is pretty thrilling.

fallen sparrow
#

I have a solar powered RPi setup outside and the battery doesn't have enough capacity so sometimes at night the inverter would make a constant high pitched noise, so I definitely wouldn't set something noisy up like that on purpose haha

rough sapphire
#

yeah that would be the kind of thing that makes neighbors start to not like you lol

#

I don't mind loud noises, but I attempt to keep them confined inside

zinc cave
#

You know, I'm hoping that the beta firmware being developed will be stable and released by the time I get my Pi. It should let the system run cooler.

#

And it will let me overclock it to like 2.1Ghz or something lol

rough sapphire
#

I haven't heard of any new firmware. does it underclock/step down the frequency when its not under load?

#

I'm sure there's a word for it. some/most Intel CPUs do that

zinc cave
#

I think it does dip down when not being actively used, yeah.

#

I don't know what the term is either

fallen sparrow
#

Dynamic frequency scaling I think

zinc cave
#

Sounds right to me

rough sapphire
#

my i5-4690k has "steps" at 1.6 GHz, 800 MHz, and 400 MHz

zinc cave
#

Lets go with that

rough sapphire
#

wikipedia confirms

zinc cave
#

Hm, interesting

#

But yeah, if you update the firmware to the current beta version, you can overclock up to 2.147Ghz from what I've read.

rough sapphire
#

does it need any kind of special cooling?

zinc cave
#

Yes, that clock speed was with 1 decent fan.

rough sapphire
#

hmm you got me thinking. my rpi4 has a decent fan.... 🤔

zinc cave
#

So when I saw a heatsink case with two fans available to buy... I wondered...

#

How far can the little guy go?

rough sapphire
#

yeah lol

#

apparently people have made clusters with these things before

zinc cave
#

Yeese

rough sapphire
#

like an array of 5-10 of them all networked and everything

zinc cave
#

Yes. A single Pi may be weak, but together, they are strong

zinc cave
#

WHAT

#

That's a thing?!

#

Wow!

rough sapphire
#

theres some interesting stuff out there

#

google "raspberry pi cluster case" and go to images

#

quite a few different types

zinc cave
#

But I'm wondering... what can these clusters do?

#

The possibilities

rough sapphire
#

I think theres some youtube videos or something, one sec

#

haha, someone turned them into a rendering farm

zinc cave
#

I just noticed that that case contains what appears to be FANS

#

Fantastic

rough sapphire
zinc cave
#

Those LEDs are dope

rough sapphire
#

I don't know anything about making your own custom chips like that, but I'd love to learn eventually

#

all I can do is breadboard stuff, and a lot of wires lol

zinc cave
#

I am just amazed by that Pi cluster. It seems like you would be able to do some cool computing with it.

#

And yeah, I don't know where to begin with custom electronics like that.

rough sapphire
#

its a rabbit hole I'm clueless on

#

but yeah once you get to those numbers, I'm sure thats quite a bit of power

#

btw raspberry pi has a discord server

zinc cave
#

Even then, for what you're getting, it's less energy than what you'd usually expect.

#

Oh, really?

#

That's cool.

rough sapphire

royal laurel

Like a bööké

plucky ridge
#

It's more like a perpetual piggy back ride

solid pollen
#

The only thing that inches are good at, is drawing grids haha, 1 inch is perfect for drawing

royal laurel
#

Oh. well LET'S GO THEN

pine vector
#

The best coffee i've ever had was from a roaster in Maastrich. and i've had coffee in a lot of places.

soft violet
#

@solid pollen Is that your final answer?

gentle moss
#

i'm not sure where you have the coffee changes how good it is

pine vector
#

i guess i did make an assumption that all Dutch roasters are just as good...

plucky ridge
#

Where they source their beans from and if they locally roast it

undone berry
#

The environment you drink it in definitely does change it I think

plucky ridge
#

True

royal laurel
#

I had to learn both once people looked at me weird for my weight. I know my own in freedom units, and can kinda calculate off my head some numbers.

undone berry
#

it's pretty hard to separate that stuff from the underlying quality

gentle moss
#

oh you mean like holiday wine?

plucky ridge
#

There's a lot about taste that is just our brains lying to us

pine vector
#

roasting is a very important part to how good a cup of coffee is.

plucky ridge
#

For me, burn it

undone berry
#

Sat by a river on a spring morning vs driving down the motorway in the rain coffee is gonna taste different

plucky ridge
#

I loooooooooooooooove dark roast

#

I want my coffee to be able to absorb light

royal laurel
#

Hemlock do you even have a throat?

pine vector
#

same. even if i do mull it down with cream+sugar. 😄

plucky ridge
#

Not since... the incident

undone berry
#

iirc more roasted = less bitter flavour?

solid pollen
#

@solid pollen Is that your final answer?
@soft violet 'bout inches? I.. Think so

royal laurel
#

I knew it

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry I think so

#

The bitterness seems to come from the caffeine

gentle moss
#

roasted means it's got really hurt feelings

plucky ridge
#

And roasting it destroys some of that in the bean

gentle moss
#

so the beans sadness increases your happiness

#

that's how it works

pine vector
#

bisk, don't drink the sadcoffee!

plucky ridge
#

Sadoffee

royal laurel
#

There's also different types of roast from different places. I remember Sumatran medium roast being so spicy compared to my usual Colombian medium

plucky ridge
#

That can also be attributed to where the beans were grown

gleaming hare
#

ok so guess fucking whaaat...

i jumped on my chair and hit my kneecap on this little mothefuckin piece of plastic inside. pain,

soft violet
#

Caffeine stimulates heartrate, simulating stress resonse. Caffeine might be a thing people crave, but it's probably not ideal if you're stressy.

plucky ridge
#

Certain soils grant different flavors to the coffee

#

It's crazy stuff

soft violet
#

Brain goes, "Heart go fast? Um...okay? Imma panic a little. That's right, yeah?"

plucky ridge
#

As a person with anxiety disorders, I shouldn't drink coffee. And as someone with ADHD who takes a stimulant to combat it, I REALLY shouldn't drink coffee

pine vector
#

yeah, coffee bean-to-cup is just as involved as brewing beer. its pretty nuts.

royal laurel
#

Ah yes, the classic

#

I relate to that first sentence on a whole different level

pine vector
#

its pretty nuts

or, "its pretty beans" rather.

royal laurel
#

Brain: panic attack by stress every 2 days
Me: haha coffee machine go brrrrrrr

plucky ridge
#

I'm drinking decaf currently, so it's less of a fight

#

HA

#

!otn a coffee machine go brrrrrr

royal lakeBOT
#

:ok_hand: Added coffee-machine-go-brrrrrr to the names list.

soft violet
#

lol

plucky ridge
#

Too awesome not to add

pine vector
#

👏 @royal laurel you have contributed to otnames!

royal laurel
#

I've been immortalised

#

Peak accomplishment

#

It's all downhill from here

pine vector
#

yep yep

plucky ridge
#

Interestingly, decaf actually still has caffeine in it

#

I think it's just like.... 5-10% of what it was

#

And the caffeine they extract in the process is sold to soda companies

oak tangle
#

i guess i did make an assumption that all Dutch roasters are just as good...
@pine vector

We have quite a few good roasters, yes, but I assumed that hipster small roaster coffee culture was booming everywhere

#

Just like the craft beer thing

#

sadly the roaster I was a fan of in The Hague is gone

#

just as I moved back to The Hague

pine vector
#

it is. but this was an old, established roaster. if i could afford it, i'd get airfare just for the coffee. 😄

royal laurel
#

I drink coffee with milk, but I'm lactose intolerant, so it's either
Twitching in the floor in pain but... It's... So good... Sips
Or
Pours delactosed milk sips water would have more flavor

plucky ridge
#

Whaaaat

#

I've never found lactose free milk to be less flavorful

#

Or do you mean skim milk?

royal laurel
#

Like, 0% milk

plucky ridge
#

Ah yeah, that's a different beast

pine vector
#

non-dairy creamer (fake, almond, etc) have never been as good to me. but...i'm also not coerced into drinking it so that prob plays a part.

royal laurel
#

I'm not lactose intolerant, I'm intolerant of milk fat. Can't drink normal milk or yogurt.

#

Cheese is a-ok

plucky ridge
#

Ah okay

gentle moss
#

ALMONDS DON'T HAVE NIPPLES

plucky ridge
#

Makes more sense then

#

Morning bisk

royal laurel
#

There's not a normal name for it so I just go lactose intolerant, easier to explain

soft violet
#

Almonds are kinda pointy, though.

pine vector
#

oh...and never butter your coffee. its..no. don't.

gentle moss
#

oh wasn't that a thing for a while?

#

"bullet" coffees or something?

plucky ridge
#

Bullet as in it made you poop yourself?

gentle moss
#

people are friggin weird

plucky ridge
#

Because that would be the result

rough sapphire
#

Eww who butters the coffee 😂

pine vector
#

it was. and i was out of 1/2&1/2...it was bad.

plucky ridge
#

HOW

#

Oh god

gentle moss
#

bulletproof coffee, that's it

plucky ridge
#

Okay

#

I misread

#

I thought you did half butter and half coffee

gentle moss
#

"bullet proof coffee can contain 2 tbsp of butter"

royal laurel
#

Bullet proof? That's the coffee Hemlock drinks.
It just dissolves the bullet upon contact

rough sapphire
#

Never in my life I’ve heard of bullet proof coffee nor butter in coffee 😂🤣

soft violet
#

Coffee in cake can be great. I've never heard of butter in coffee, though.

plucky ridge
#

Hmm, sounds like a manlier coffee than I can really live up to

pine vector
#

you have now. but for your sake, forget you have.

rough sapphire
#

It’s almost like those New Yorkers putting butter in their muffin

#

Darn New Yorkers

royal laurel
#

GODDAMNIT now he's gonna do it

#

What have I done

gentle moss
#

a muffin is a bread product, butter seems fair game there

plucky ridge
#

True

#

Not my jam, but I get it

pine vector
#

wait? you don't butter muffins? blueberry muffin+butter+sugar = ermahgerd!

rough sapphire
#

But the way they put it o

#

on*

#

ITS EXCESSIVE

royal laurel
#

You butter anything but toast?

plucky ridge
#

Go to a county fair

pine vector
#

oh. like a butter glaze? hehe

plucky ridge
#

You'll be numb to over buttering of things real quick

rough sapphire
#

Like there’s butter melting all over their hand it’s just disgusting 🤢

royal laurel
#

Ewww

#

If the butter isn't IN the dough, then I'll most likely not like it

pine vector
#

"for those days you want a cinnamon roll, but not the calories, choose 14 less calories and douse a muffin in butter"

rough sapphire
#

Nope they apply it themselves

royal laurel
#

14 whole calories

plucky ridge
#

I'd want the slogan to be "My Arteries are Clogging With Joy!"

rough sapphire
#

Lol

royal laurel
#

laughs in below normal cholesterol

plucky ridge
#

Eat more eggs

royal laurel
#

I ate strictly fast food for a whole month. My weight has never gone above 93

rough sapphire
#

I’ve never had a yolk in my egg 😆

plucky ridge
#

Wait what?

rough sapphire
#

My parents don’t “approve” of it

plucky ridge
#

How have you never had yolk

royal laurel
#

Whaaaa

plucky ridge
#

On what grounds do they object?

rough sapphire
#

If you see how strict my parents are on about food

royal laurel
#

Runny yolk pan egg??? That's like, so good

pine vector
#

i feel for the yolkless. runny yolk is what makes fried egg so delicioso.

severe knot

yo I heard this was off-topic

anyone tryna start minecraft SMP

plucky ridge

It's also where most of the nutrients are

royal laurel
#

Sir we're talking about eggs here

rough sapphire
#

THE CLOSEST WE HAVE TO CRACKERS ARE DRIED MANGO CHIPS

plucky ridge
pine vector
#

are there eggs in Minecraft? asking for a friend..

royal laurel
#

What's a mango chip

plucky ridge
#

Guessing it's like a banana chip

#

So like... dehydrated and sugared

royal laurel
#

RL has a mod that lets you make fried eggs and all that, but I don't remember at the top of my head which one

rough sapphire
#

It’s basically dried mango turned into a chip

pine vector
#

they don't have to be sugared. but...much less yummy.

plucky ridge

royal laurel

To me sll countries have either + or - depending on Greenwich.

#

I'm not american

rough sapphire

that's a timezone

plucky ridge

That's still a timezone

royal laurel
#

But like what's an est lmao

plucky ridge
#

Eastern Standard Time

royal laurel

pine vector
#

yeah, some of them cover entire countries. US be wide...

gentle moss
#

GMT isn't even a stable timezone

plucky ridge
#

No I think it's like..

rough sapphire
#

That’s the time zone for the east coast

plucky ridge
#

+4 or +5?

rough sapphire
#

but lots of countries have east coasts

plucky ridge
#

That might be UTC though

rough sapphire
#

For the US I meant

royal laurel

I'm +3 and that's all I know

ahhh, you're thinking of the marillion line

named after that band

plucky ridge

Wait really?

i used to dabble. started in Blue Chips like a dum dum, then burned through a bunch of penny stocks. it was disposable cash though, so no biggy. i may get back into some ETFs/indexes here in a couple months though... second correction is coming, imo.

plucky ridge

All of that is above my head

gentle moss

plucky ridge

I just toss money into my 401k and have a financial guy handle it

rough sapphire

It’s not thaaaaat complicated

Lol

plucky ridge

Well no but I just don't want to deal with it

pine vector
#

i'm also repeatedly kicking myself for not picking up AIG during the Great Recession when it hit $1.05... 🤦

rough sapphire

I was 5 during the Great Recession 😑

gentle moss
#

that's 2008.

pine vector
#

i'm old...

rough sapphire
#

Well about the time the Great Recession ended

plucky ridge
#

I can only imagine what having to deal with a fluctuating market would do to my anxiety

rough sapphire
#

Which was about 2010

royal laurel
#

All of that is above my head
I graduated in economics and I feel like I'm reading chinese :)

gentle moss
#

so you're 15? o_O

rough sapphire
#

When it started I was 3

#

No I’m 13

#

@plucky ridge some people thrive on a fluctuating market

gentle moss
#

you shouldn't be trading stocks.

royal laurel
#

Talk about memory wiping things you dont like

rough sapphire
#

I trade with my dad

plucky ridge
#

Wait, is it legal for someone under 18 to trade?

#

Ah okay

gentle moss
#

no, hem.

plucky ridge

That makes sense then

gentle moss

but that makes more sense, yes

rough sapphire
#

It don’t do it alone XD

plucky ridge

It's the internet

rough sapphire

royal laurel

plucky ridge

Where as we have to report them to Discord since we're partnered with them

#

It's up to us whether we want to remove them from our server

At least discord reports do something

plucky ridge

(We typically do. A temp ban up until they're of age)

rough sapphire

ROBLOX REPORTS DO NOTHING

modest thicket

all my homies play minecraft wym

plucky ridge

rough sapphire

I swear probably I’ve had like 50 kids claim to report me for being to good

#

And I haven’t been banned yet

plucky ridge
#

It's for the kid's safety and for Discord's liability

rough sapphire
#

why would you be banned for being good? talk sense

#

Yeah there’s some freaks around discord

#

@rough sapphire idk that’s what makes me laugh

#

I remember how I read this one article

#

This one girl meet this one dude on discord

#

The guy claimed he was 14 like the girl

#

And he was asking for stuff which I’ll not mention just for the sake of it

#

And IT TURNS OUT

plucky ridge
#

I mean we know how it is

#

It's been going on since the 90's in chatrooms then

rough sapphire
#

The guy was 54 yr old man living in Louisiana 😱😱

#

The fbi found him and arrested him

#

for all we know, you're a 54 year old man in Louisiana

royal laurel
#

my 21 year old ex tried to cheat on me with my 15 year old friend

plucky ridge
#

For all you guys know, I'm a 54 year old man NAMED Louisiana

rough sapphire
#

Ever since that I’ve never friended anyone I don’t really know ANYWHERE

royal laurel
#

that was a weird conversation with her

plucky ridge
#

Yeah I can imagine

gentle moss

i'm 54 Louisiana alligators in a trenchcoat

rough sapphire

Lol

#

@plucky ridge that's an otn name surely

plucky ridge

Where even is louisiana

plucky ridge

I'm not American and I know what Louisiana is

gentle moss

the sad part is if you look up "alligator in a trench coat"

plucky ridge
#

It's the state that looks like an L

gentle moss
#

you get alligators literally in trench coats

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge ironic huh?

royal laurel
#

Bold of you to assume i know what states look like

#

I know texas looks like texas

#

And that's about it

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire Not sure if that counts as irony. Convenient, more like

rough sapphire
#

True true

plucky ridge
#

@royal laurel I was just going on the assumption you knew what an L looked like and left the rest to you

rough sapphire
#

texas is the state that looks like a cowboy belt buckle amirite?

plucky ridge

Brilliant

royal laurel

Hemlock please help I never learned my ABCs

its a drama-cat. maybe haz a future on Broadway. there's this one show.... lemon_thinking

plucky ridge

@pine vector Yeah the problem with that is that Cats Can't Dance

When u mention dancing cats I thought of bingo cat 🤷‍♂️

plucky ridge

the 30's is when you start to get old.

plucky ridge

Or at least when I can justifiably play it up.

undone berry
#

I feel like this is people-in-their-30s elitism, and getting old really starts at like 50

#

50 is the age where it starts to get to the point where you can fall over and not get back up easily

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry Just let me have this. I want a reason to start early in my grouchy old man stage

undone berry
#

(for most people, there are obviously exceptions)

royal laurel

That's a beautiful mental image, thanks

pine vector

but, you can also just start saying whatever and people are like, "meh. they're old.". plusses and minuses...

plucky ridge
#

Hence the stereotype that older people are racist

#

Or at least more racist

pine vector
#

lol. now i want to watch that Tom Segura bit...

plucky ridge
#

Why can't I think of the one you mean

#

@royal laurel Also it just hit me that there's only been a 2 to 3 year window when you dating someone of that age range would have been legal. So was this a recent event?

#

Actually, hold that thought, back in a tic.

rough sapphire
#

Imagine living in Minneapolis right now 😬

I've dated a 14 year old

I was 15

plucky ridge
#

You don't have to answer

royal laurel

I'm not proud and I've realized growing up, that I was being very coerced on that relationship. But I did "hang out" with my physics teacher when I was about 15. He wassss 45 I believe?

rough sapphire

that's all sorts of creepy

#

Wait I dated ur physics teacher

I mean, you were being taken advantage of

That's not your fault so much as theirs at that age

plucky ridge

#

Not because

royal laurel
#

Yeah, it wasn't fun, ever more when he divorced his wife and began stalking me

plucky ridge
#

Typing on mobile

rough sapphire
#

Woaaah that’s actually pretty scary

sand goblet
#

Well that escalated quickly

rough sapphire

Like not even creepy

plucky ridge

My hands still get shaky talking about it, it really wasn't happy or fun. And it bothers me how media often glorifies young girls dating old men. Because it's absolutely not like that.

#

You can say a joke, it's alright

#

I've been out of it for 6 years now

sand goblet
#

I'm glad you did get out of it

#

That's not a good spot to be in for sure

plucky ridge
#

I hope the physics teacher ended up understanding the gravity of the situation

sand goblet
#

Ooooooh

rough sapphire
#

#

I remember one time in school we learned about modern slavery and it turns out that some 50 yr old men MARRY 12 year old girls for there pleasure 😬

royal laurel
#

pfffffffft

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge nice one 😂

sand goblet
#

In some countries they do that yeah

royal laurel
#

Yeah that's alright hem, hahaha

rough sapphire
#

That’s pretty corrupt if u ask me

sand goblet
#

A lot of people would agree I'm sure

pine vector
#

Hem, i'm trying to get you a timecode on the Tom bit. just got held up on the "BIKES!" bit. 😄

plucky ridge
#

I didn't mean to prod a touchy subject, aki.

royal laurel
#

As for the next one I went on a date with a 60yo pal last year. Not my cup of tea, but I gave it a shot!

#

Oh it's alright

pine vector
#

plucky ridge

#

(Not really)

plucky ridge
#

@pine vector I can't place a face with the name

rough sapphire
#

reminds me of the brief period in 8th grade when I genuinely hanged out (in the most literal sense) with my Estonian teacher

royal laurel
#

Thank you 🥰 I promise I'm alright tho

rough sapphire
#

he was really cool actually

#

plucky ridge
#

That's the joke?

rough sapphire
#

I think that was the most stupidest thing ever

undone berry
#

if so - why talk about it?

#

all you do is gave oxygen to nonsense

plucky ridge
#

I guess I don't pay attention enough to either of those things

rough sapphire
#

I didn’t give oxygen cause I’m typing 🤪

#

Lol

undone berry
#

I can't stand hearing about shitty youtubers

plucky ridge
#

Biology experts would disagree

sand goblet
#

I voted for t-series

#

Fight me

royal laurel
#

Lmao

rough sapphire
#

My mom is a biology expert

royal laurel
#

I still watch him but idrc

rough sapphire
#

@sand goblet stick up your brofists

sand goblet
#

Hahaha

plucky ridge
#

I just watch GameGrumps

sand goblet
#

I just want to say that gluten free bread isn't as bad as I thought it would be

plucky ridge
#

And like one or two speedrunners

rough sapphire
#

@sand goblet depends on the bread... branded/self-made?

plucky ridge
#

@sand goblet it's much better than it used to be

undone berry
#

Speedrunners are cool - I don't have the patience to follow the scene, but it's very impressive

sand goblet
#

I got a brand called BeFree

solid pollen
#

Are you a no gluten guy g?

sand goblet
#

Unfortunately my mom is making me try it

plucky ridge
#

Glutendude

sand goblet
#

I don't think I'm a coeliac

royal laurel
#

I speedrun Minecraft and that's about it

rough sapphire
#

ah yeah BFree is in tesco and look like the top tier gluten free stuff

royal laurel
#

Although I'm really interested in binding of isaac speedruns

solid pollen
#

I'm (trying to) speedrun super mario odyssey

sand goblet
#

It's hard to get here but I managed to get a small loaf

solid pollen
#

That's a fun game to speedrun

plucky ridge
#

@royal laurel I've been playing that game so damn much lately

sand goblet
#

Made a bacon sandwich and I have no complaints

royal laurel
#

isaac?

plucky ridge
#

Oh yeah

royal laurel
#

man, i LOVE isaac

sand goblet
#

Isaac is a good game but it's a bad top down shooter and that bugs me

plucky ridge
#

Me too

sand goblet
#

Because I like top down shooters a lot

royal laurel
#

I got afterbirth, ++ seems so overwhelming

solid pollen
#

But is you bacon gluten free

plucky ridge
#

Its worth it

sand goblet
#

Yes!

plucky ridge
#

Ack, talk more about it in a bit

sand goblet
#

Ciao

undone berry
#

Man, the NHS website is pretty great. It does a good job of giving a simple overview of pretty much everything you'd want

royal laurel
#

I see people doing pure holy or pure satanic runs, it looks INSANE

solid pollen
#

Because I like top down shooters a lot
That makes me remember the sand topdown section in contra 3, what a piece of shit this sequence, I still have nightmares of it haha

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry you know it's good when it's rivalling webmd

sand goblet
#

If you want to play a good top down shooter

#

Then you need to play Assault Android Cactus

rough sapphire
#

UKers and gduders how long do you think before wave 2 hits?

sand goblet
#

Hopefully never here in Ireland

solid pollen
#

There's lemon in that game haha

sand goblet
#

Yeah there's a character called lemon haha

#

I think I mostly played mine as Holly

undone berry
#

Honestly, I hope its sooner rather than later. If it comes too late, I'm gonna be commuting to London and catching the damn thing

solid pollen
#

Hopefully we shouldn't have a second wave - I mean, out of all pandemics since the beginning of humanity, there are never been any 2nd wave

undone berry
#

hm? The Spanish Flu had a second wave I'm pretty sure

rough sapphire
#

was about to say that

#

spanish flu 100% had second wave

royal laurel
#

the spanish flu had 3 waves

rough sapphire
solid pollen
#

Well, I get that from an epidemiologic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

royal laurel
#

Yeah kinda basic ngl

#

Needs more satan

plucky ridge
#

HA

undone berry
#

Wikipedia's source for there being a deadly second wave is pretty rock solid

#

so it sounds like your epidemiologist was wrong or you misunderstood

rough sapphire
#

i need a haircut but even if there was a barber open i wouldn't trust it atm :/

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire Oh dude, I FINALLY unlocked "The Lost" character. I spent, no exaggeration, 6 months trying to unlock that bastard

solid pollen
#

Fair enough

royal laurel
#

The Spanish Flu as The Spanish Flu, had one wave

#

H1N1 had 3 waves

#

They were all called different, but it's the same virus

undone berry
#

Could you pull off the bald look @austere spade ?

#

i'd fix the @ but you can guess who I mean

rough sapphire
#

i dunno, probably not, although i was tempted

#

@plucky ridge i personally consider the forgotten/keeper to be harder to unlock than the lost

#

some random guy being asked if they look good bald, nice

sand goblet
#

It's kind of sad that bum-bo flopped

rough sapphire
#

the lost is my favourite character to play, though

undone berry
#

I don't even need a haircut, but I@m tempted to try the bald look

sand goblet
#

I can see why it did, but

gentle moss
#

@royal laurel that's wrong btw

rough sapphire
#

wait, bumbo is out?

gentle moss
#

the spanish flu had 3 waves.

royal laurel
#

That's literally what I said

plucky ridge
#

Oh yeah I don't doubt it. I got The Forgotten, but I haven't gotten The Keeper yet

#

Going to be working on that next

gentle moss
#

the whole thing was called.... the spanish flu.

plucky ridge
#

I actually got the forgotten a while ago. I just never got a good RNG seed to get The Lost

royal laurel
#

You do understand H1N1 IS the spanish flu right

#

Like, it's the same thing

gentle moss
#

yeah but you were implying "the spanish flu" was just one wave

royal laurel
#

No I'm not

rough sapphire
#

H1N1 is swine flu

royal laurel
#

And whatever you think I imply is your own problem

gentle moss
#

[15:56] aki 🌙🍃: The Spanish Flu as The Spanish Flu, had one wave

rough sapphire
#

chill

#

Mind you that the Spanish flu happened with less advanced tech

gentle moss
#

it was called the spanish flu through all 3 waves.

royal laurel
#

You could have read all my messages and maybe you'd not be as confused

plucky ridge
#

Breathe, aki

undone berry
#

tbf - I read all of your messages and am still pretty confused as to what you mean. But this is a point that doesn't really matter, we're all on the same page in general

rough sapphire
#

this is probably just a naming thing between countries

plucky ridge
#

Also possible

gentle moss
#

the reason it was called the spanish flu was because spain was the only control not all busy having a war

plucky ridge
#

True. Pandemics bad, pigs are cool

gentle moss
#

and hiding the fact their men were getting super sick

rough sapphire
#

in english speaking countries h1n1 is swine flu whereas spanish flu is the 1918 one

gentle moss
#

so it got the name "the spanish flu"

#

the spanish called it "the french flu"

royal laurel
#

It's the exact same virus people

#

H1N1 had 3 waves

gentle moss
#

and, that entire 3 wave outbreak, was generally, across the world, call the spanish flu.

royal laurel
#

Aside from like, 10 outbrakes since 1918

gentle moss
#

the spanish flu, had 3 waves.

royal laurel
#

The 2009 one was called swine flu

plucky ridge
#

From what I'm reading, the Swine flu is a mutated strain of the original H1N1/Spanish Flu

undone berry
#

h1n1 is a set of viruses. Colloquially for people in the UK, h1n1 means specifically swine flue

rough sapphire
#

H1Z1 was also a game lol

plucky ridge
#

They're in the same family, but not the same virus exactly

gentle moss
#

and we can't actually know the deeper uhhh... history of the spanish flu virus because it deeeeed

#

as if RNA is ever alive

rough sapphire
#

i had the pig flu

gentle moss
#

how was that?

plucky ridge
#

Guinea pig flu

rough sapphire
#

pleasant, as you can imagine

royal laurel
#

Yeah there was also h1n2 but like, antigens here and there, same thing
