@solid pollen It does since it sends it as an embed
That's cool

Does anyone know of a good video course on Kotlin for beginners
if you already know java, the kotlin koans are nice to get you started
not a video though
The best one if you already okay with python would be kotlin for python devs
Not a video either though
how different is kotlin from scala... I'm familiar with scala and how it's used for data engineering, but don't really know what kotlin is used for besides android
Kotlin is practical for any place that you'd use Java or the JVM
It's fully interoperable and compatible with all Java libs (to my knowledge)
As far as I know it doesn't have any specific niche it fills
It's just meant to be a more pleasant alternative to Java so you can use the JVM
scala is also compatible with java libs.. except it's not always straightforward to call java code from it
ye, kotlin is just better java 8 (the difference is not that large with newer versions, though kotlin is still better), which makes it quite convenient for the legacy codebases where java8 is still in use
well, the thing about kotlin is it is often nicer to write idiomatic java code in kotlin than in java
ahhh ok
Scala is a functional-first language as well
yeah I'm familiar with it.. built some stuff to start services through api requests.. the downside is it that it's not supported at most major companies
but Kotlin is..
so has me second guessing
Kotlin is like smooshing Python and Java together
I mainly just wanted a reason to say "smoosh"
lol
kotlin is also nice because it lets you use some functional patterns, and can have values which are guaranteed to be non-null
I would try to pick this up if there were some data engineering related resources for this
Yeah, kotlin is null-safe for the most part
The Kotlin you write will be
Java was used in the data science world for a very long time so.. use those tools and write kotlin?
But any Java libraries might still have their booby traps
Yup
As far as I understand
though any java interop assumes nullable
It doesn't
You can get tripped up when a java library doesn't declare something nullable that can be
Like a function return
does it not? When I tried it, everything from java was nullable
By default?
It's a bit smarter than that, but it can't catch every case
Can Kotlin be called a general purpose programming language
Or is it limited to app dev only?
it is definitely general purpose
Its safeness makes it applicable in a large number of fields actually
Did somebody say #career-advice related advice?
Nice one 😂..whoosh I go there ::::
raspberry pi 4 has an 8 GB model now, neato
they aren't saying this is coming out, but they also hint at the possibility of a 16GB variant as well
I bought a 4 GB one the other week with a 64GB sdhc card to run a django application that manages this distributed scraping thing I'm working on
whats cool with these vs running on a "normal" server is you can use the GPIO pins to output noise to speakers or colors to RGB leds for alerts and stuff. these things are awesome
"Yep, every time someone downloads a file from my server, it makes a small fart sound."
I.... want to do that project more than I'd like to admit
you can fulfill your dreams with this
It would have to be one of those squeakers, you know?
Probably does show off how tired I am when that's my big asperation for the day
hey, big projects can have humble beginnings lol
"So my new product, the iPoot, will inform you exactly when a user interacts with your site. Judging by the tone, intensity, and as we call it "dampness" of the noises it produces, it will tell you just how they're doing."
This is why I shouldn't be allowed to have a keyboard
gentlemen i am eating, why u do this to me
"Ah, looks like they're checking out the 'About' page"
@royal laurel I make no excuses for my terrible jokes
lmao
Normally it's just puns but for some reason, that popped into my head
the only thing i remember raspberry pi of, is a friend that was insulin dependent and used one for her medication
To like distribute the right amounts or something?
mmhm
Oh that's really handy
OpenAPS
She had severe type 1 and could never be without a machine injecting her with insulin
Glad there was a workable solution at least
In years past it likely would have either meant a death sentence or being bed ridden
It's quite the project
Artificial Pancreas
Band name
openaps is Open Artificial Pancreas System. It's such an interesting topic.
A true cyborg organ
Does make me wonder how long of a charge the battery pack would offer
And it just worries me because there are several potential points of failure. That's not a criticism of the system, just kind of the inevitability of a system needing that many separate pieces.
It really is crazy how we're stepping closer and closer into world as shown by Deus Ex
in this use case you definitely want it to fail fast and in a way where the user gets alerted quickly
the software underclocks the pi to make battery last longer when it's low
Just makes me wonder if it wouldn't benefit from something lower maintenance like an arduino unit or what have you.
Potentially less bulky that way as well
On the flip side of this, it is kind of sad that we've gotten to the point where we have to create our own ways to do medical things.
She got sued
And won
They tried to make it illegal because apparently it was a "threat"
a threat?
The medical industry isn't used to seeing something like the open source market
It'll be interesting to see things slowly adapt as tech gets cheaper and potentially safer
But I do also foresee a lot of unnecessary accidental harm coming from less than legit biohacking options
There is something to be said about all the hoops that those things have to get through before they reach a consumer
I remember this very specific update to the algorithm, my friend was so happy
Apparently their math is incredibly specific
Likely due to the floating point calculations it has to do
Those are always a potential irritant
A mg off in either direction could mean life or death
So precision is paramount
it sounds like there is a lot of opportunities for open source projects in the medical field
Not surprising. Although I tend to think of that stuff in the same way I think about car maintenance. While I could probably fix stuff myself on my vehicle, I'd rather have it done by a professional, so that if it goes wrong, I at least have someone to blame and/or know how to fix it
I know very little of the industry/field, other than a lot of treatments can be extremely expensive
I'm not meaning to sound negative to the project, it's incredible and I'd love to see more things like it
But it just makes me worry quite a lot at the same time
If there's a slipup in the code anywhere, that could be hundreds of lives on the line
The point of OpenAPS was to make it accessible by everyone by not signing with a lab brand
Right, and I'm all for that for sure
perhaps there should be some non-bureaucratic validation process. like it gets reviewed by a small team of doctors and programmers
These are the things I love seeing come out of programming and tech
It does
I think stuff like this is definitely a step in the right direction
Agreed
if it does, then great
Aside from that, OpenAPS is not responsible of misuse because it's just an algorithm
It's up to people to use good quality hardware
Which is, I assume, why the FDA version is so expensive
Aside from lobby
Sure
The scenario I'm seeing in my head is someone uses one of these setups and passes away from an accident somewhere in the chain. Who ends up paying for the accident?
Just feels like a potential litigation nightmare
I think I'm just a worrier
That's probably what it is
Right, but all potential outcomes need to be considered
Like you said, people need to make sure they're using good tech
Oh absolutely
And it's not unlikely that someone might not use the best or be able to afford the best
But honestly, reading about this makes me really happy. There's enough strife and hardship and death around as it, so the idea of people coming together to make something like that to help make lives better really does encourage me
Very cool
I feel so happy for the young people using it
young people
You can't be that old
Imma be 20 and i meant it in a children way
Ah, gotcha
a third of users are kiddos
Yeah you're a youngin' to me. That makes sense to me.
am child
But a wise one from what I can tell
Aw thanks! I just grab interest in a bunch of stuff
True, but I can't imagine a lot of people would gravitate towards a project like that normally. Shows a large degree of compassion
I went to med school
Clearly I dropped
But I liked it! I find the concept of "upgrades to the flawed human body" very interesting
Same here
hey @plucky ridge, have you heard about what the orange in chief is up to this time?
Yeah read that this morning
plays to the base, though.
yes, I suppose it does
And we know he's all about that base
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
the incumbent curse: voter turnout determines everything. 😉
Your jokes are the worst I love them
Finally someone appreciates the terribleness!
Right, okay, I actually have to leave now. Later folks
baibai
o/
I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM a couple days ago and they JUST NOW released the 8GB option. Whyyyyy
wait that's a thing?
Yes!
oh how fancy
I wondered why they were selling the 2GB for the same as a 1GB... ($35)
I should have known something was up, considering the official website said the 2GB was $45. Oh well.
yup, happens to the best of us
All the more reason to have 2 Pis later on! lol
although at least your complaint just informed me of a very compelling pi model, so i might get one or two at some point for some projects. ^^
Well, glad some good could come of my misfortune, lol
I expected a server about coding to have more bots
@mental bison we don't add any third party bots to this server
there are community made bots, @royal lake and @median dome, which are open source on https://github.com/python-discord
autoescaping is enabled for all templates ending in .html, .htm, .xml as well as .xhtml when using render_template().
Taken from https://flask.palletsprojects.com/en/1.1.x/templating/
In case someone thoughtrender_template()just escapes everything.
@zinc cave depending on what you need the 1GB ones may be all you need, might as well save the money
@rough sapphire This is true. However, I planned on using the RPi as a secondary computer that I can also leave running to host my Discord bot. And in the future, maybe even a website or game server. I spent a little under $200 on components besides a keyboard and mouse (I have quite a few of those lying around), so the $20 extra for 4 more GB of RAM would have been nice.
The monitor contributed to almost half of that budget, so it wasn't too bad considering.
@zinc cave aside from my 1GB pi-3 I also have the 4GB pi-4. 4gb is still quite a lot to work with. I haven't done this with mine (yet) but I think you can disable the desktop to further save RAM
the 1GB one I got is just a lightweight flask app with a REST API running selenium, so it serves as a worker doing distributed scraping
for that it works perfectly
to add to using the 4 GB one- you'd use SSH to access it then
well for any of them really lol
Huh, I see. I'm not familiar with a lot of the terms you've used tbh. Idk what 'flask app', 'REST API', 'selenium', 'scraping', or 'SSH' is. I have heard the term 'SSH' used before, but only vaguely know what it is. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this matter.
no you're perfectly fine
Just curious why choose a Pi if you're planning to use it as a desktop? Pretty sure even an ancient Core 2 Duo would run circles around the Pi's CPU, and if you need something smaller there's NUCs, those compute sticks etc. I always imagined Pis mainly for the embedded use case or at least something with GPIOs.
flask application is just a web application, REST API is a way services can communicate, selenium is a library that faciliates scraping, scraping is just extracting data from web pages, and SSH is accessing servers remotely. so if you have a 'headless' machine (no monitor, just powered on and connected with ethernet) you can still do anything you could do normally with it.... install applications, configure settings, etc
it works as a very cheap desktop with very low power consumption
np
there are community made bots, @royal lake and @median dome, which are open source on https://github.com/python-discord
@bleak lintel @mental bison we also have @polar knoll (which is also open source, but not our bot per se)
And yeah, what Mark said about low power consumption. x64 architecture is power hungry and inefficient and not suitable to leave running unless power is of no concern.
its a pretty cool niche that it fills
It really is. I'm glad that my Dad brought up the RPi 3 he hadn't set up with RetroPie yet, because that got me thinking about it, and I realized how much I wanted one after that.
Hmm I guess so, but x64 opens up a whole bunch of applications/OS you can run. When you mention $200 I'm thinking you can get a decent used PC/laptop for that
Yes, you can run more stuff, but at the cost of increasing power consumption by like 5× or so
There is nothing more satisfying than the thought of running a Pi at full clock but consumes 1/3 the power of my current monitor.
passive cooling too, which further drives down power
assuming its in a good environment, it can run for a very long time without any sort of maintenence
Yeah, passive cooling is always great, but a little fan only takes up to a watt, and that removes any throttling problems.
I went the passive route (on my 3 at least) so I could use the GPIO pins, specifically the power sources
Yeah, that makes sense.
when it reads web pages for my use case, it alerts me if there is certain matches for keywords and is attached to a buzzer and bright RGB led
1000x more attention getting than an sms or email lol
yeah I love these things, and mixing python with hardware stuff
there is actually a python library FOR the gpio pins actually
if you didn't know that already
What website? so we can wake you up at 12am
Really? What does that do?
@fallen sparrow :x
yeah it makes it very easy. and just the concept of having python interface with the physical world is exciting to me, whether its outputting signals to the pins, or reading whatever sensors/input devices attached
Yeah, it is pretty thrilling.
I have a solar powered RPi setup outside and the battery doesn't have enough capacity so sometimes at night the inverter would make a constant high pitched noise, so I definitely wouldn't set something noisy up like that on purpose haha
yeah that would be the kind of thing that makes neighbors start to not like you lol
I don't mind loud noises, but I attempt to keep them confined inside
You know, I'm hoping that the beta firmware being developed will be stable and released by the time I get my Pi. It should let the system run cooler.
And it will let me overclock it to like 2.1Ghz or something lol
I haven't heard of any new firmware. does it underclock/step down the frequency when its not under load?
I'm sure there's a word for it. some/most Intel CPUs do that
I think it does dip down when not being actively used, yeah.
I don't know what the term is either
Dynamic frequency scaling I think
Sounds right to me
my i5-4690k has "steps" at 1.6 GHz, 800 MHz, and 400 MHz
Lets go with that
wikipedia confirms
Hm, interesting
But yeah, if you update the firmware to the current beta version, you can overclock up to 2.147Ghz from what I've read.
does it need any kind of special cooling?
Yes, that clock speed was with 1 decent fan.
hmm you got me thinking. my rpi4 has a decent fan.... 🤔
So when I saw a heatsink case with two fans available to buy... I wondered...
How far can the little guy go?
Yeese
like an array of 5-10 of them all networked and everything
Yes. A single Pi may be weak, but together, they are strong
theres some interesting stuff out there
google "raspberry pi cluster case" and go to images
quite a few different types
I think theres some youtube videos or something, one sec
haha, someone turned them into a rendering farm
I don't know what this does, but jeez https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_r3z1jYHAc
Documentation, Source code, and EagleCAD designs: https://bitbucket.org/jkiepert/rpicluster
Summary:
The RPiCluster is a 33 node Beowulf cluster built using Raspberry Pis (RPis). During my dissertation work at Boise State University I had need of a cluster to run a distribute...
Those LEDs are dope
I don't know anything about making your own custom chips like that, but I'd love to learn eventually
all I can do is breadboard stuff, and a lot of wires lol
I am just amazed by that Pi cluster. It seems like you would be able to do some cool computing with it.
And yeah, I don't know where to begin with custom electronics like that.
its a rabbit hole I'm clueless on
but yeah once you get to those numbers, I'm sure thats quite a bit of power
btw raspberry pi has a discord server
Even then, for what you're getting, it's less energy than what you'd usually expect.
Oh, really?
That's cool.
you might be interested in joining there too
Yeah, I might. Thanks for the tip.
ah it doesn't let me post it lol
Oop, yeah, that's not allowed lol
Ah, alright. Probably same here soon. Goodnight!
nice chatting with you, gnite
Yes, nice convo indeed
That reminds me of this https://www.tomshardware.com/news/turing-pi-raspberry-cluster-board-server
Hmm, yeah the compute modules may be a better way to go in some projects.
I just watched what i thought to be a talk about software (in the end that was the lesson) but the whole time it talked about United Airlines Flight 232 and now i both hate airplanes a little more, respect the hell out of pilots and every person who works on planes alot more and got a valuable lesson at the end my brain is confused about everything lol (btw if you want to watch the talk and have time its called "How to crash a airplane - Nickolas Means | The Lead Developer UK 2016") not the most profund thing ever but a crazy enough story that if your not too sensitive to that kind of stuff is a great watch
I'm not really aiming for the high score on the watchlist inclusions board.
the prophecy
It's almost like the inspiration for ot names are taken from conversations had here.
i mean the fact that the name mentioned 6 months ago on this channel is the name now
hardly a prophecy
yeah thats stupid
it was already an otname back then

It's probably not just you.
The world is crazy and that has a psychological effect on people.
Physiological, at that.
There's stress toxicity and all sorts of chemical stuff that goes on.
Your URL is malformed.
Morning folks
heyhey
Why the raspberry hat?
Because it's raspberry frog
Because it combats stress.
Story checks out
That frog is like a vibe realignment
So wait, is this a frog you actually own or just a really cool image?
It's a really cool image
It's on my cottagecore collage wallpaper and I had to find it
The hand could be wetter.
That's what she- okay maybe not
I feel like I'm needing some coffee, but coffee tastes bad IMO
Heathen
Double heathen
When I first tried coffee, I tried it with lots of milk and sugar; I hated it and did not try it again for 6 months or so
I'm not even exaggerating, I actually do 😅
Now, I just drink it as-is
I feel like your pancreas might resent you, aki
Life resents me Hemlock
@oak tangle Good man
Black coffee is the way to go. There are so many different notes and subtle flavors in coffees
if I say mojito is okay, am I not an heathen anymore?
I have no idea what morito is
Time for spellchecker
I eat too much sugar and I admit it's a problem. Then again I'm 90 pounds and my cholesterol is below the normal so I don't really care about my diet
You're a backpack
Yes sir
*mojito
Anyone under 100 lbs is a backpack, to me
@oak tangle to be fair, you have some of the best coffee in the world available to you.
6 tesaspoons of sugar in anything sounds pretty grim
Told you, am child
How tall are you?
5'4
i do 2 heaped teaspoons of coffee and 4 heaped teaspoons of sugar.
because it is 2 coffees in one mug.
Hahahaha I've been lifted off the ground several times, and it doesn't help men around me are above 5’9
I just do one teaspoon, no matter the size of the mugh
Yeah, I'm 6' so there would be carrying happening
I regularly had college backpacks heavier than you
( ・ั﹏・ั) I've been demoted to "Hemlock's backpack"
Why do you have to use this silly metric system
I know both so idc
I feel like I should be offended that its considered a demotion
Oh man, that's a tall hemlock haha
I'm 40kg and 162cm
i'm a "2 cream, 2 sugar" drinker myself. though, if the coffee is good enough i can go lower.
I do?
it's different when it's not instant
@pine vector That's a fair point. If it's garbage coffee I'll usually tart it up
height is the one area where where I can't move away from feet and inches properly. I just know 180cm ~= 6ft
Ves, you're Dutch iirc, yes?
Same. It's weird.
yes, I'm Dutch
I feel like I should be offended that its considered a demotion
I mean
It might not be if you give me something interesting to hold
No no
Like a bööké
It's more like a perpetual piggy back ride
The only thing that inches are good at, is drawing grids haha, 1 inch is perfect for drawing
Oh. well LET'S GO THEN
The best coffee i've ever had was from a roaster in Maastrich. and i've had coffee in a lot of places.
@solid pollen Is that your final answer?
i'm not sure where you have the coffee changes how good it is
i guess i did make an assumption that all Dutch roasters are just as good...
Where they source their beans from and if they locally roast it
The environment you drink it in definitely does change it I think
True
I had to learn both once people looked at me weird for my weight. I know my own in freedom units, and can kinda calculate off my head some numbers.
it's pretty hard to separate that stuff from the underlying quality
oh you mean like holiday wine?
There's a lot about taste that is just our brains lying to us
roasting is a very important part to how good a cup of coffee is.
For me, burn it
Sat by a river on a spring morning vs driving down the motorway in the rain coffee is gonna taste different
Hemlock do you even have a throat?
same. even if i do mull it down with cream+sugar. 😄
Not since... the incident
iirc more roasted = less bitter flavour?
@solid pollen Is that your final answer?
@soft violet 'bout inches? I.. Think so
I knew it
roasted means it's got really hurt feelings
And roasting it destroys some of that in the bean
bisk, don't drink the sadcoffee!
Sadoffee
There's also different types of roast from different places. I remember Sumatran medium roast being so spicy compared to my usual Colombian medium
That can also be attributed to where the beans were grown
ok so guess fucking whaaat...
i jumped on my chair and hit my kneecap on this little mothefuckin piece of plastic inside. pain,
Caffeine stimulates heartrate, simulating stress resonse. Caffeine might be a thing people crave, but it's probably not ideal if you're stressy.
Brain goes, "Heart go fast? Um...okay? Imma panic a little. That's right, yeah?"
As a person with anxiety disorders, I shouldn't drink coffee. And as someone with ADHD who takes a stimulant to combat it, I REALLY shouldn't drink coffee
yeah, coffee bean-to-cup is just as involved as brewing beer. its pretty nuts.
its pretty nuts
or, "its pretty beans" rather.
Brain: panic attack by stress every 2 days
Me: haha coffee machine go brrrrrrr
I'm drinking decaf currently, so it's less of a fight
HA
!otn a coffee machine go brrrrrr
:ok_hand: Added coffee-machine-go-brrrrrr to the names list.
lol
Too awesome not to add
👏 @royal laurel you have contributed to otnames!
yep yep
Interestingly, decaf actually still has caffeine in it
I think it's just like.... 5-10% of what it was
And the caffeine they extract in the process is sold to soda companies
i guess i did make an assumption that all Dutch roasters are just as good...
@pine vector
We have quite a few good roasters, yes, but I assumed that hipster small roaster coffee culture was booming everywhere
Just like the craft beer thing
sadly the roaster I was a fan of in The Hague is gone
just as I moved back to The Hague
it is. but this was an old, established roaster. if i could afford it, i'd get airfare just for the coffee. 😄
I drink coffee with milk, but I'm lactose intolerant, so it's either
Twitching in the floor in pain but... It's... So good... Sips
Or
Pours delactosed milk sips water would have more flavor
Whaaaat
I've never found lactose free milk to be less flavorful
Or do you mean skim milk?
Like, 0% milk
Ah yeah, that's a different beast
non-dairy creamer (fake, almond, etc) have never been as good to me. but...i'm also not coerced into drinking it so that prob plays a part.
I'm not lactose intolerant, I'm intolerant of milk fat. Can't drink normal milk or yogurt.
Cheese is a-ok
Ah okay
ALMONDS DON'T HAVE NIPPLES
There's not a normal name for it so I just go lactose intolerant, easier to explain
Almonds are kinda pointy, though.
oh...and never butter your coffee. its..no. don't.
Bullet as in it made you poop yourself?
people are friggin weird
Because that would be the result
Eww who butters the coffee 😂
it was. and i was out of 1/2&1/2...it was bad.
bulletproof coffee, that's it
"bullet proof coffee can contain 2 tbsp of butter"
Bullet proof? That's the coffee Hemlock drinks.
It just dissolves the bullet upon contact
Never in my life I’ve heard of bullet proof coffee nor butter in coffee 😂🤣
Coffee in cake can be great. I've never heard of butter in coffee, though.
Hmm, sounds like a manlier coffee than I can really live up to
you have now. but for your sake, forget you have.
It’s almost like those New Yorkers putting butter in their muffin
Darn New Yorkers
a muffin is a bread product, butter seems fair game there
wait? you don't butter muffins? blueberry muffin+butter+sugar = ermahgerd!
You butter anything but toast?
Go to a county fair
oh. like a butter glaze? hehe
You'll be numb to over buttering of things real quick
Like there’s butter melting all over their hand it’s just disgusting 🤢
"for those days you want a cinnamon roll, but not the calories, choose 14 less calories and douse a muffin in butter"
Nope they apply it themselves
14 whole calories
I'd want the slogan to be "My Arteries are Clogging With Joy!"
Lol
laughs in below normal cholesterol
Eat more eggs
I ate strictly fast food for a whole month. My weight has never gone above 93
I’ve never had a yolk in my egg 😆
Wait what?
My parents don’t “approve” of it
How have you never had yolk
Whaaaa
On what grounds do they object?
If you see how strict my parents are on about food
Runny yolk pan egg??? That's like, so good
i feel for the yolkless. runny yolk is what makes fried egg so delicioso.
It's also where most of the nutrients are
Sir we're talking about eggs here
THE CLOSEST WE HAVE TO CRACKERS ARE DRIED MANGO CHIPS
#ot2-never-nester’s-nightmare is inactive if you want to start a convo about minecraft there, though, @severe knot
are there eggs in Minecraft? asking for a friend..
What's a mango chip
RL has a mod that lets you make fried eggs and all that, but I don't remember at the top of my head which one
It’s basically dried mango turned into a chip
they don't have to be sugared. but...much less yummy.
UM
I'm in the US
They all have to be
It's some kind of like.... American moral code or somethin'
so is i. i've seen them about...vile creatures.
hemlock r u EST gang
Central
IM EST GANG
east coast bois 😎
That’s right 👌
I don't... I don't know my timezone
I don't think we have one, I've never used them
Guh. I was scrolled up.
that's a timezone
That's still a timezone
But like what's an est lmao
Eastern Standard Time
-1GST?
yeah, some of them cover entire countries. US be wide...
GMT isn't even a stable timezone
No I think it's like..
That’s the time zone for the east coast
+4 or +5?
but lots of countries have east coasts
That might be UTC though
For the US I meant
I'm +3 and that's all I know
Wait really?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Anyone here buys and sell stocks?
Not I
haha. i literally had the Capt James Cook convo with the kiddo this week. too coincidence-like.
Oh my
Every single stock on my watch list has had a price drop 🤣
It's alright, time is a lie and all i know is that the sun is out and I'll have lunch in a bit
That's my timezone
Accept for Home Depot
Fair
Some how
@rough sapphire That actually makes sense
(it's 11am)
People are stuck at home so they're busy occupying themselves
i used to dabble. started in Blue Chips like a dum dum, then burned through a bunch of penny stocks. it was disposable cash though, so no biggy. i may get back into some ETFs/indexes here in a couple months though... second correction is coming, imo.
All of that is above my head
short the housing market
I just toss money into my 401k and have a financial guy handle it
Well no but I just don't want to deal with it
i'm also repeatedly kicking myself for not picking up AIG during the Great Recession when it hit $1.05... 🤦
I was 5 during the Great Recession 😑
that's 2008.
i'm old...
Well about the time the Great Recession ended
I can only imagine what having to deal with a fluctuating market would do to my anxiety
Which was about 2010
All of that is above my head
I graduated in economics and I feel like I'm reading chinese :)
so you're 15? o_O
When it started I was 3
No I’m 13
@plucky ridge some people thrive on a fluctuating market
you shouldn't be trading stocks.
Talk about memory wiping things you dont like
I trade with my dad
no, hem.
That makes sense then
but that makes more sense, yes
It don’t do it alone XD
yes.
@rough sapphire Sure, I know some do. But I'm sure it would stress me to the point of breaking
Pedo’s on Roblox be like
see, i just did it then.
@rough sapphire Let's not go there
Mb
It's fine more just cutting you off at the pass
I love the items your hero collects in Godville
"Solar-powered darkness absorber"
"Roll of disappoint-mints"
So a solar panel
It's like this game is made for me
I remember some dude tryna sell my dad solar panels at Home Depot
A solar panel powering a lamp
It was funneh
A lamp!
It's not producing light, it's absorbing the dark
Ya know how discord is 13+ correct
tag yourself i'm unholy swiss cheese
I bet you at least there is like 100000000 10-12 yr olds on discord
There was even a 3rd grader I met once lol
@rough sapphire I don't doubt it
I bet you at least there is like 100000000 10-12 yr olds on discord
fortnite and minecraft servers be like
there are quite often far too many children on my lawn indeed
you can usually guess someone's maturity by the way they communicate, @rough sapphire
no u
And usually, yeah
But I've seen some older folks who talk (and act) like utter children, and some younger folks who carry themselves with great dignity
@gentle moss those might be garden gnomes. is specsavers open?
there's a 12yo on the chat i'm most frequent and they don't ban him because they feel bad for him
i'm mod. i have strictly forbidden to ban him, even if he continuedly breaks the rules
L I F T
I know this one server I was in the owner was under age, they found him and they banned him and his server lol
he's, in all sense of the word, an asshole to people, all the time. but "uwu we cwant bwan him hwe'll fweel bwad"
Where as we have to report them to Discord since we're partnered with them
It's up to us whether we want to remove them from our server
At least discord reports do something
(We typically do. A temp ban up until they're of age)
ROBLOX REPORTS DO NOTHING
all my homies play minecraft wym
But yeah, Discord wants people to report the under age folks
I swear probably I’ve had like 50 kids claim to report me for being to good
And I haven’t been banned yet
It's for the kid's safety and for Discord's liability
why would you be banned for being good? talk sense
Yeah there’s some freaks around discord
@rough sapphire idk that’s what makes me laugh
I remember how I read this one article
This one girl meet this one dude on discord
The guy claimed he was 14 like the girl
And he was asking for stuff which I’ll not mention just for the sake of it
And IT TURNS OUT
The guy was 54 yr old man living in Louisiana 😱😱
The fbi found him and arrested him
for all we know, you're a 54 year old man in Louisiana
my 21 year old ex tried to cheat on me with my 15 year old friend
For all you guys know, I'm a 54 year old man NAMED Louisiana
Ever since that I’ve never friended anyone I don’t really know ANYWHERE
that was a weird conversation with her
Yeah I can imagine
i'm 54 Louisiana alligators in a trenchcoat
Which
And the girl was like 14
Where even is louisiana
Oh HA
far too long for an ot name
Ya know like the Popeyes commercial @royal laurel
!otn a alligators in a trenchcoat
:ok_hand: Added alligators-in-a-trenchcoat to the names list.
We've actually got some lengthy ones
its like otnaming day...
I'm not American and I know what Louisiana is
the sad part is if you look up "alligator in a trench coat"
It's the state that looks like an L
you get alligators literally in trench coats
@plucky ridge ironic huh?
Bold of you to assume i know what states look like
I know texas looks like texas
And that's about it
@rough sapphire Not sure if that counts as irony. Convenient, more like
True true
@royal laurel I was just going on the assumption you knew what an L looked like and left the rest to you
texas is the state that looks like a cowboy belt buckle amirite?
Brilliant
Hemlock please help I never learned my ABCs
Alright, time to discuss ABstract Classes...
they're hit-or-miss. and i love Popeyes...
Like the vampire one?
There was this one kid in my class whose claimed he’s never heard or have watched Sesame Street
I CALL LIES
You wanna know who I feel bad for
Hemlock's cat?
The kids whose parents won’t let me watch spongebob as a kid
i think Hemlock's cat is allowed to watch spongebob
Okay
Real talk on that
My wife was at home sick one day and was watching the show "Catfished"
I never liked spongebob
below a certain age, Spongbob is horrible. the scenes switch so fast... but, i do enjoy some bob.
catfished is that mtv show or?
That's amazing
You know I'm not sure
Yep, MTV
Not with his crunchy joints
His knees are about as bad as mine
its a drama-cat. maybe haz a future on Broadway. there's this one show....
@pine vector Yeah the problem with that is that Cats Can't Dance
nor are they supposed to look like James Corden... 😄
HA
Thank you for being as old as me and for understanding my references, sommer
That song is what I was thinking of haha
i got you Hem.

tbh when you mentioned dancing cats i thought of the actual musical
with all its weird sexual hip thrusting
I've purged that from my brain
urg.
Hemlock you're not even that old
When u mention dancing cats I thought of bingo cat 🤷♂️
I'm a decade older than you
Hemlock roleplays a grouchy old man on the internet
See? Not even that old
the 30's is when you start to get old.
it's the soft edge of an ever steepening curve
ahh. 30's. such fun. 😄
I've dated people 2 decades older than yourself, don't even worry about it
Or at least when I can justifiably play it up.
I feel like this is people-in-their-30s elitism, and getting old really starts at like 50
50 is the age where it starts to get to the point where you can fall over and not get back up easily
@undone berry Just let me have this. I want a reason to start early in my grouchy old man stage
(for most people, there are obviously exceptions)
That's a beautiful mental image, thanks
but, you can also just start saying whatever and people are like, "meh. they're old.". plusses and minuses...
lol. now i want to watch that Tom Segura bit...
Why can't I think of the one you mean
@royal laurel Also it just hit me that there's only been a 2 to 3 year window when you dating someone of that age range would have been legal. So was this a recent event?
Actually, hold that thought, back in a tic.
Imagine living in Minneapolis right now 😬
Ooh, you rascal you
You don't have to answer
I'm not proud and I've realized growing up, that I was being very coerced on that relationship. But I did "hang out" with my physics teacher when I was about 15. He wassss 45 I believe?
45 46
I mean, you were being taken advantage of
U*
That's not your fault so much as theirs at that age
Yeah, it wasn't fun, ever more when he divorced his wife and began stalking me
Typing on mobile
Woaaah that’s actually pretty scary
Well that escalated quickly
Oh no, this isn't the time for jokes, Hem...
My hands still get shaky talking about it, it really wasn't happy or fun. And it bothers me how media often glorifies young girls dating old men. Because it's absolutely not like that.
You can say a joke, it's alright
I've been out of it for 6 years now
I hope the physics teacher ended up understanding the gravity of the situation
Ooooooh
ffs Hem
I remember one time in school we learned about modern slavery and it turns out that some 50 yr old men MARRY 12 year old girls for there pleasure 😬
pfffffffft
@plucky ridge nice one 😂
In some countries they do that yeah
Yeah that's alright hem, hahaha
That’s pretty corrupt if u ask me
A lot of people would agree I'm sure
Hem, i'm trying to get you a timecode on the Tom bit. just got held up on the "BIKES!" bit. 😄
I didn't mean to prod a touchy subject, aki.
As for the next one I went on a date with a 60yo pal last year. Not my cup of tea, but I gave it a shot!
Oh it's alright
its sooo hard to fast forward through a Tom Segura set...
But as I say to everyone here, if you need to talk or just want to, my DMs are open
@pine vector I can't place a face with the name
reminds me of the brief period in 8th grade when I genuinely hanged out (in the most literal sense) with my Estonian teacher
Thank you 🥰 I promise I'm alright tho
he was really cool actually
but anyways yeah that's pretty creepy ngl
You guys wanna year a joke
no
I didn't realize it was until I was 17
That's the joke?
I think that was the most stupidest thing ever
I guess I don't pay attention enough to either of those things
I can't stand hearing about shitty youtubers
Biology experts would disagree
Lmao
My mom is a biology expert
I still watch him but idrc
@sand goblet stick up your brofists
Hahaha
I just watch GameGrumps
I just want to say that gluten free bread isn't as bad as I thought it would be
And like one or two speedrunners
@sand goblet depends on the bread... branded/self-made?
@sand goblet it's much better than it used to be
Speedrunners are cool - I don't have the patience to follow the scene, but it's very impressive
I got a brand called BeFree
Are you a no gluten guy g?
Unfortunately my mom is making me try it
Glutendude
I don't think I'm a coeliac
I speedrun Minecraft and that's about it
ah yeah BFree is in tesco and look like the top tier gluten free stuff
Although I'm really interested in binding of isaac speedruns
I'm (trying to) speedrun super mario odyssey
It's hard to get here but I managed to get a small loaf
That's a fun game to speedrun
@royal laurel I've been playing that game so damn much lately
Made a bacon sandwich and I have no complaints
isaac?
Oh yeah
man, i LOVE isaac
Isaac is a good game but it's a bad top down shooter and that bugs me
Me too
Because I like top down shooters a lot
I got afterbirth, ++ seems so overwhelming
But is you bacon gluten free
Its worth it
Yes!
Ack, talk more about it in a bit
Ciao
Man, the NHS website is pretty great. It does a good job of giving a simple overview of pretty much everything you'd want
I see people doing pure holy or pure satanic runs, it looks INSANE
Because I like top down shooters a lot
That makes me remember the sand topdown section in contra 3, what a piece of shit this sequence, I still have nightmares of it haha
@undone berry you know it's good when it's rivalling webmd
If you want to play a good top down shooter
Then you need to play Assault Android Cactus
UKers and gduders how long do you think before wave 2 hits?
Hopefully never here in Ireland
There's lemon in that game haha
Honestly, I hope its sooner rather than later. If it comes too late, I'm gonna be commuting to London and catching the damn thing
Hopefully we shouldn't have a second wave - I mean, out of all pandemics since the beginning of humanity, there are never been any 2nd wave
hm? The Spanish Flu had a second wave I'm pretty sure
the spanish flu had 3 waves
@royal laurel it's an ok game. https://arse.ee/Eyl06RZ7.png
Well, I get that from an epidemiologic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
HA
Wikipedia's source for there being a deadly second wave is pretty rock solid
so it sounds like your epidemiologist was wrong or you misunderstood
i need a haircut but even if there was a barber open i wouldn't trust it atm :/
@rough sapphire Oh dude, I FINALLY unlocked "The Lost" character. I spent, no exaggeration, 6 months trying to unlock that bastard
Fair enough
The Spanish Flu as The Spanish Flu, had one wave
H1N1 had 3 waves
They were all called different, but it's the same virus
Could you pull off the bald look @austere spade ?
i'd fix the @ but you can guess who I mean
i dunno, probably not, although i was tempted
@plucky ridge i personally consider the forgotten/keeper to be harder to unlock than the lost
some random guy being asked if they look good bald, nice
It's kind of sad that bum-bo flopped
the lost is my favourite character to play, though
I don't even need a haircut, but I@m tempted to try the bald look
I can see why it did, but
@royal laurel that's wrong btw
wait, bumbo is out?
the spanish flu had 3 waves.
That's literally what I said
Oh yeah I don't doubt it. I got The Forgotten, but I haven't gotten The Keeper yet
Going to be working on that next
the whole thing was called.... the spanish flu.
I actually got the forgotten a while ago. I just never got a good RNG seed to get The Lost
yeah but you were implying "the spanish flu" was just one wave
No I'm not
H1N1 is swine flu
And whatever you think I imply is your own problem
[15:56] aki 🌙🍃: The Spanish Flu as The Spanish Flu, had one wave
it was called the spanish flu through all 3 waves.
You could have read all my messages and maybe you'd not be as confused
Breathe, aki
tbf - I read all of your messages and am still pretty confused as to what you mean. But this is a point that doesn't really matter, we're all on the same page in general
this is probably just a naming thing between countries
Also possible
the reason it was called the spanish flu was because spain was the only control not all busy having a war
True. Pandemics bad, pigs are cool
and hiding the fact their men were getting super sick
in english speaking countries h1n1 is swine flu whereas spanish flu is the 1918 one
and, that entire 3 wave outbreak, was generally, across the world, call the spanish flu.
Aside from like, 10 outbrakes since 1918
the spanish flu, had 3 waves.
The 2009 one was called swine flu
From what I'm reading, the Swine flu is a mutated strain of the original H1N1/Spanish Flu
h1n1 is a set of viruses. Colloquially for people in the UK, h1n1 means specifically swine flue
H1Z1 was also a game lol
They're in the same family, but not the same virus exactly
and we can't actually know the deeper uhhh... history of the spanish flu virus because it deeeeed
as if RNA is ever alive
i had the pig flu
how was that?
Guinea pig flu
pleasant, as you can imagine
Yeah there was also h1n2 but like, antigens here and there, same thing
