steep stirrup
#

ahhhhh

#

yessss

#

that's amazing dude

#

do you ever intend to transfer it over to a server or keep it running on the mobile?

young flame
#

Look. Bio theme

steep stirrup
#

you might end up loosing data if your mobile blacks out yk

steep stirrup
young flame
#

I have ACID persistence to Google drive

#

Swear to god

#

Most overengineered discord bot

steep stirrup
#

hmm

#

i can see that

young flame
#

In the green one the creatures are slimey

steep stirrup
#

thermal stuff, runs on a mobile, uses mmap, and persistence on g drive

#

must be hard to actually maintain tho?

young flame
#

Surprising not really. I know my codebase well and I do Build With AI so its like having a codebase search engine. And then I have descriptions for everything so I Ctrl F what I need

steep stirrup
#

ahhhh

young flame
#

I mostly do systems thats my fav

steep stirrup
#

i am more of a traditional programmer in that sense

young flame
#

Yeah I was

#

Im published in programming for physics research

#

I just get bogged down and tired

#

So id rather architect and do systems

steep stirrup
#

haha, i think programming is the fun part, i wouldn't want AI to do the fun part for me

young flame
#

Yeah we are just diff haha. I think the theory and concepts and connecting systems is fascinating. Getting something to work that shouldn't. On 10 different fronts

Particle physics on phone
Thermal monitoring
ACID persistence
Particle physics cache coordination

Yes. Two simultaneous physics Sims on a phone...

#

Thats unbelievably satisfying. The like. Performance and how systems flow together

steep stirrup
#

yeaaa

young flame
#

Thats my fav

steep stirrup
#

that sounds like fun too

young flame
#

Yeah its just different and thats ok

steep stirrup
#

yessir

#

i suppose i enjoy computer science itself more than using computers for doing stuff

#

diving deep into how a cpu would work or how the program would optimize my code gets me the thrill i look for

young flame
#

I like edge computing and just in general, proving people wrong when im fairly sure im right

Ill back down if im wrong but the phone thing ive got data for

#

Regular servers would probably be really confusing to me. I like. Work with constraints first. Im not sure where id start if I didnt have something I had to be like. Ok nope can't do that

steep stirrup
#

hmm

young flame
#

Like my thermal system is because I rendered and spiked my battery 30° in 1 second and was like huh. Thermal is gonna be an issue

steep stirrup
#

your style of thinking is quite good

young flame
#

I appreciate it.

#

I studied physics so I try to break down the problem first

steep stirrup
#

i've worked with horrible laptops before. huge constraints. so i've been through that phase long enough to write efficient software now

steep stirrup

Im self taught. Ive taken 1 CS class. Lots of physics and math though

i am self taught too

So is Lemon

young flame

cool

young flame
#

Now he's founder of this server

steep stirrup
#

this lemon fella is interesting

#

sounds cool

young flame
#

He hosted the launch of python 3.10 and is a python fellow. Founded this server. Still took time out of his day to give me a code review

Meant a ton to me

steep stirrup
#

whaaaat

young flame
#

Hes genuinely nice

#

Yeah I didnt know who he was at the time

steep stirrup

Just was talking

Yes

steep stirrup
#

pretty cool man

young flame
#

That lemon. Hes genuinely nice

#

Hes a high school dropout too. Also self taught

#

Now he's CTO of a tech company and still took an hour to talk to me, complete stranger, and look at my repo

#

Extremely nice person

glacial ferry

Very grateful

young flame
#

@steep stirrup so yeah. We are in good company being self taught 👍

#

i missed some of the chat

#

steep stirrup
steep stirrup
young flame
#

Ahh. The gist is that my first real human code review was from the founder of this server. Coolest thing

My mistake. Sorry.

steep stirrup
#

i've not seen such maturity in discord moderators otherwise

young flame
#

Yeah they're good

steep stirrup
#

i've never had anyone review my code yet i think

#

been mostly a self evaluation loop

young flame
#

Give it a shot. You might get surprising feedback. I got a genuine code review from lemon

High cyclic complexity

I defended with mobile constraints

He said my defense was incorrect but that python on mobile was novel.

We settled on looking more into the root cause for better understanding

#

I didnt know who he was then but in retrospect, if I hadn't just done it I would have been so nervous

steep stirrup
#

yea

#

i am not sure how i feel about sharing my github out here but i'll deffinately try to get a code review from someone i know irl

This entire thing is bullshit

  • cost doesn’t make something simple
  • Claude runs on the dev’s laptop, not the server
  • a vendor has the same pricing regardless of what tier you buy, if they’re predictable at a low tier they’ll be predictable at a higher tier too
  • any server will run your process for as long as the process wants to run

The first con is the only bullet here that makes sense
A cheap VPS will get overwhelmed if your traffic suddenly scales drastically

But the rest of the cons are about app deployment, which has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of the hardware.
I’m going to use the same Ansible playbook for my $5 home lab VPS that I’m using on the $$$ servers st work, because they’re the exact same OS.

It's an arts thing

#

The color wheel is fluid, there is no hard endpoint for any color

#

Thus you could have a green that is bluer than the other

willow narwhal
# fallow tapir Perhaps not words themselves, but the concepts I find it very hard not to exist

There's not even a distinction between blue and green everywhere: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blue–green_distinction_in_language

In many languages, the colors described in English as "blue" and "green" are colexified, i.e., expressed using a single umbrella term. To render this ambiguous notion in English, linguists use the blend word grue, from green and blue, a term coined by the philosopher Nelson Goodman—with an unrelated meaning—in his 1955 Fact, Fiction, and For...

fallow tapir
#

Speaking as an artist myself. Lemme read it...

fallow tapir
#

Because it's a language thing, rather than a perception thing. One can't expect that people can't see blue or green just because their language lack a word for it

#

Also, when you have refined perception, like an artist, you have to, that is a necessity, to understand color mixing

#

And for that one must add either more blue or more yellow to reach its desired greens

#

Even if you don't have words for them

willow narwhal
# fallow tapir Ah , it doesn't make what I said false

Not necessarily, yeah, but your perception is partly shaped by what your language can express. I wouldn't be too sure that you can really express it somehow in any language (I'd be careful with and claim about every language), but sure, I'm not saying that you necessarily can't express the concept you're describing if e.g. you have the same word for green and blue.

fallow tapir
#

About the perception partly shaping what one can express, let's do a thought experiment: if someone don't have a word for red, do we really expect that this person can't see red? Or see it altered?

Also, what about people like Amala and Kamala, that grew up speechless... I think it is unreasonable to expect they can't see the color spectrum as well as any other human just because they grew up without a language

wooden silo
#

Hm, isn't green-yellow called chartreuse?

fallow tapir
#

But anyone can see vessie green

willow narwhal
fallow tapir
#

I think we are speaking about different things?

willow narwhal
fallow tapir
#

If it's shaped, it's influenced. I confess I don't understand you expression.

It's the influenced perception part that I disagree with

wooden silo
#

I think there have been studies that show how we interpret and categorize based on color is influenced by the support we get from our language. Like, speakers of a language with no blue/green distinction will judge differences more directly based on color wavelength, whereas others will exaggerate differences that fall on either side of that language's color boundary, etc.

willow narwhal
#

(I'd be interested to see whether you could see a difference in e.g. response time or correctness when testing people in some color distinction task based on whether their language has more or less basic color terms.)

wooden silo
#

Or, speakers of a language with a light blue/dark blue distinction (like, entirely different color names) will be faster at distinguishing that split.

wooden silo
fallow tapir
wooden silo
fallow tapir
wooden silo
#

Although, I mean, the brain is weird.

fallow tapir
#

Well, in painters world, they have many more words to distinguish colors then your average person. And are much quicker and precise at it too.

wooden silo
#

If you grow up in a society where everyone makes a distinction between two shades of blue, and you always look at those colors and think and consider the distinction, it's possible that maybe your brain kinda rewires itself for that color distinction task.

fallow tapir
#

Anedoctical evidence, though

wooden silo
#

It won't perhaps change the physiology of your eye, but it might change the physiology of your brain.

#

And whether that's part of your "basic" perception or not is kinda vague.

gleaming forge
#

Yooo

undone granite
#

yo

gleaming forge
#

so i have a core 2 duo computer , 4gb ram and a x64 architecture

#

i saw os have impacts on computer so i am trying to switch into linux mint (cinnamon edition).

#

I am afraid of my data.

undone granite
#

do you have an external drive?

gleaming forge
#

I have HDD.

#

i think 2 of them.

undone granite
#

in the computer right? what's their capacity?

gleaming forge
#

can you see that to identify ? i dont get this stuff.

undone granite
#

my honest advice is to backup your data outside of the computer since you're new to this stuff, that's the safest approach

gleaming forge
#

i really dont have outside of computer approach's.

#

which drive i really need to backup ?

marble bay
#

Anything with data on it

gleaming forge
#

Dont OS require only one disk ?

marble bay
#

2 partitions will do, but you won't believe how easy it is to wipe the wrong disk when you're inexperienced/not paying attention

#

From the partition names I'm guessing this is a machine you share with other people, I'd suggest trying wsl in that case instead of a dual boot

gleaming forge
gleaming forge
#

Silence.

undone granite
#

yeah.. I don't think your family will like it if the data gets wiped

gleaming forge
#

which backup options are there without any external things ?

marble bay
#

the entire point of a backup is to be external

#

if there's less than 125ish gigs of data across both drives you could try to consolidate everything into a single drive

gleaming forge
#

maybe delete some data ? softwares that wont work on linux ?

undone granite
#

The other option is to free up some space and create a partition and choose that partition when you install Linux, but you could accidentally:

  1. wipe all data by telling it to use the entire disk
  2. wiping some data by choosing the wrong partition
  3. choosing the wrong disk
just be careful if you really don't have another option
#

but I wouldn't risk my data or my family's data if I were you

gleaming forge
#

Ok that settles it.

#

i will try to store some data to phone , cloud etc as much as i can.
