young shoal

it's not really well defined, and usually "magic" goes away when you learn about how it actually works. so maybe that's a good definition: something cool that happens that you don't understand ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

young shoal

#

spring moment

solemn tulip
#

I guess for a python example, pytest

warped sentinel
# patent girder what do people usually mean when they say "magic" when it comes to programming? ...

"magic" means behavior that is difficult to reason about.

For instance, Spring isn't considered as magic because it has a well defined behavior that one can reason about. Specifically if you have multiple candidates for an injection, it will fail fast and list which candidates it has and complain about it. An equivalent magic behavior would be to pick one either randomly or based on some lexicographically order. That would make the behavior of the app inconsistent and hard to reason about since anyone creating a class could break something without being made aware of it

#

Another example of magic was spring boot in its early days. It would activate some stuff based on which jar was on the classpath. So you could have one of your dependency activating or breaking some features without your knowledge.
They have improved a lot in that regard now though

Capitalism moment

#

Is the race to the bottom just the way of the world or is it employers?

#

I think it's the former. Was it employer's fault when people who dig up guano for fertilizer replaced by new fertilizer technology?

#

If you get thrashed by life that's on you, bad things were always gonna happen in your life, they've been coming since u were born

#

Not saying its right, how the world works, but that's how i see things. If I had my way there'd be more compassion and empathy

young shoal
#

if you had your way, all the people that are more successful than you would die :P

warped sentinel
warped sentinel

it's like linking cars as the technological race to the bottom because of the decline of blacksmiths

young shoal
#

yeah sorrow doesn't link much together

uneven pine
#

Send the billionaires into poverty for a year, teach them what it's like

tulip falcon
#

But maybe my first example wasn't too strong.

#

and what i assume everyone is talking about is being replaced by nocode or AI solutions, and why not, why would we want to pay $100k+ for people to make software.

#

One could argue its both employers and the world who enact such a change.

#

So back to your example of cars- we see that a horse is a liability and expense, where a car replaces them more reliably. My point being in all this is we are all expendable.

#

And I think the moment that we can be replaced, we will. Is that the employers or the nature of humanity?

tulip falcon
#

Not only expendable but would go so far to say there's a target on our backs.

#

I find it strange to say that technology isn't related to the race to the bottom, as if that hasn't been the driving force of replacing expendable workers for 200 years. No a blacksmith wasn't replaced by a car, but maybe a factory.

#

I think the problems of society in general is that everyone is expendable and only worth what they can give. That's what I mean by the world needs more empathy and compassion

#

I feel like that's all my life boils down to- what can I give to society, and inversely, what does society do? It just takes

#

If a person like me doesn't believe in any real meaning to anything that happens, then all I have is what I can give to humanity.

#

So in that respect I guess it's fine that all society does is ruthlessly go after the bottom line, its all we know.

#

I'd be fine to work my whole life to make a small change to something. Even if it's thankless, fuck it, I'll be dead.

#

But best case scenario, maybe I have my name on a book or something, and things i did and how my life was help somebody. Better than senseless

#

If all else fails and I'm no good at programming and trying to get rich, hopefully it was at least interesting and had a unique perspective on things. Maybe those aspects would make me not be expendable in a new world.

Argenti and Tingyune doesn't really fit in with firefly

#

~62% of firefly damage come from Trailblazer's super break damage

#

Firefly doesn't need Tingyune energy, too

#

Well, not really

#

I mean, if she kill enough enemies, she can use 1 skill then ult

#

But sometimes you'll need 2 skill to ult

#

Realistically, Firefly is built to be very fast, so it doesn't matter that much

But it's is nowhere near her optimal team

(you're losing out of 62% of Firefly's personal damage)

#

Hunt March is fun, for sure

(I believe imaginary mc is fun, just because he/she allowed a new type of DPS)

dim pivot

Unless your firefly is really slow, you might run out of skill point

#

if you know a bit of C, this will be much easier to explain.

#

so, like i was saying, at a high level, there are two main regions of memory. the stack is the only one we really need to care about for now

#

take this simple C code. all it does is declare an integer.

#
int main() {
    int x;

    return 0;
}
#

if im interpreting your overall confusion correctly, you'd be wondering how C "knows" where the x starts in memory, and where it stops?

#

(along those lines)

shadow canyon
shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

but for the rest

eager cliff
shadow canyon
#

i expect a stack data structure in memory type-thing

eager cliff
#

that is pretty much what it is.

#

so essentially, for now, you'll have to take this as an axiom:

#

that is, the operating system has a way of assigning a region of memory to a program

#

(for now)

shadow canyon
#

lets continue

#

ill try to follow your explanation

eager cliff
#

essentially, your CPU has registers.

#

which are small areas of memory inside the CPU where it stores small bits of information

shadow canyon
#

good to know i guess

eager cliff
#

theyre important. the main one that we care about though, is the "stack pointer" register.

shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

the actual location of the registers is cpu dependent and i honestly couldnt tell you that much, but its not really important.

shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

put simply, whenever your program starts, it knows the location of the first byte of memory that the operating system assigned it.

#

and that location is stored in the "stack pointer register."

shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

you following so far, though?

shadow canyon
shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

cool cool

#

so, back to that C program

#
int main() {
    int x;

    return 0;
}
#

all we have is this little declaration of a variable called x.

eager cliff
#

so, you asked how it knows where it starts: it's shrimple.
in order to "create" the memory that x stores, you simply add x's size in bytes to the stack pointer.

eager cliff
#

the int type has a size that is known when the program is being compiled

toxic sun
#

int randInt() {
int x;

return x;
}
My fav random int generator. >:)

eager cliff
#

so when the program is being compiled, the compiler will output machine code that increments the stack pointer by that size.
the same happens when you do long y, or short z, etc, just with different sizes

toxic sun
#

unsigned long long best type.

tight granite
eager cliff
#

you follow so far?

#

questions?

shadow canyon
#

is it that way?

eager cliff
#

the stack does have a maximum size. most programs just doesnt take it into consideration.

#

most programs quite literally just assume they have enough stack space to store variables and such

shadow canyon
eager cliff
#

more or less, yeah.

#

your program just doesnt have immediate access to the size of its stack.

shadow canyon
eager cliff
shadow canyon
#

well maybe the programs over-demanded space so that's why it was 100% and there were no collisons

#

just memory inefficient i guess?

eager cliff
#

you might be confusing stack with the other region of memory your computer gives your program.
alongside the stack, which does have a fixed size, your OS will also give your program access to a much larger region of memory (usually called 'the heap') which, theoretically, will have as much space as memory you have on your computer.

#

most programs only have a 1MB to 8MB sized stack by default depending on the OS.

#

but the heap size is theoretically as big as you have memory on your computer

shadow canyon
#

oh i have to go

#

sorry

eager cliff
#

ah alright, no problem lol
