So cute
Just booby for short
Yeah
Discord should add emoji servers
So you dont have to actually join a server to get their emojies
There were these bracelets that said "I ❤️ boobies" when I was in elementary school
Maybe they Meant blue footed boobies

hey, salt-die is here right? I forget whether I saw nurses_2 here or elsewhere. I'm having some weird behavior with the TextParticleField, for some reason it always draws particles in italics with a strikethrough and I can't find where it's applying that formatting
I can send the repo I'm working on it's just a silly personal thing
ah they are here @shadow jetty ^ (sorry for the ping!)
can you show me the code?
i'm guessing you're using the wrong type for particle_chars,
& here's what the particle field looks like when it's rendered
I'm comparing it to https://github.com/salt-die/nurses_2/blob/09a43e566be6772470fcb0b44ec134351be742d3/examples/advanced/exploding_logo.py#L210 and I definitely didn't initialize my array to the right dtype
examples/advanced/exploding_logo.py line 210
particle_chars = np.zeros_like(particles, dtype=Char)```
Ayy yeah it works if I pass in the correct type, thanks lol
salt-die is magical
I take it that wasn't the first time they've seen that 😅
pycharm
i've done it myself, if you just use some U1 array, somewhere in the rendering the chars will be broadcast and coerced to the boolean fields (bold, italic, etc)
LMFAO
@willow narwhal @azure tapir here's what my version says:
Interesting. This might indeed be geo-IP-based. Where are you accessing the internet from?
East coast USA
...actually I might be able to see the difference one sec. (If I look it up via my work's VPN then I'll geo to Europe)
Yeah, I have the same
, from Germany. Probably a EU vs. US thing
where the law mentioned actually exists
Very interesting. At any rate I believe we still can't help our Euro friends with YT downloading as we (pydis) are subject to the laws where we are registered
enforcing rules in any other way wouldnt be practical
I still think it would be legal for PyDis to do so. The exact rule came — AFAIK — during the time we were partnered with Discord, where there were stricter rules.
so maybe some rule errata could sort that out
I personally wish rule 5 would be different (ignoring ToS), but it'd be hell to moderate, so I can sympathize.
Yeah. I think if you got really technical about it; a Euro person could assist another Euro person (or other location with equivalent laws) but a US person could not.
I just had to take a training about international sanction controls and I assume the law will be relatively consistent there
IANAL, but I think it's still legal for a US person to help a US person or anyone. You're breaking ToS, but not the law.
Especially when you haven't explicitly agreed to it (via account creation)
i think you can stretch the meaning of "legal" to cover any rules in a discussion like this
Right; well, you're still potentially exposing yourself to action. Let's say you assist with writing some code that ends up being used in a way that gets a lot of attention and the code gets traced back to you; I would not be surprised if YT were to sue for damages
And yeah this is kinda the legal debate. The plaintiff lawyers will argue the wording (by using this service you agree to terms) and your lawyer will argue that you never signed anything
IANAL but my uncle is.
Congrats!
i'm working on it, abstractions are cool
👍
and i am trying to create, what is a basically, 16384 radio buttons
dont ask why
i'm going to ask why

Hey, so, uhhh
For some reason, my Neovim highlights $()s as red (to show them as errors, presumably)
IIRC I did have neovim just use error red as a normal color for syntax highlighting
Oh, I meant background red, not text red
ah, that's definitely weird then
I haven't been able to find any relevant results in Google
Because it's Google (derogatory)
I remember someone named "love" here
I don't chat at Discord that often anymore
I used .owo a lot one time in one of the OT channels
Also, I had a different avatar back then
Both of us pfp and name r familiar to me
I think others might have this picture though, so that might be it
I tried everything I can do with Neovim, didn't work. I download Vim one time, it works.

Hi
Anyone know how to get rid of this when I run ssh? I prefer my ssh prompts in the terminal.
Are you using the git credential manager? https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Tools-Credential-Storage ? Might be worth a shot turning it off and seeing if that changes the behavior
why would that effect ssh?
I'm not even using git.
(yes, I see Git in the title)
setting credential.helper to cache didn't do anything
ahh I thought this was invoked by git over SSH. How'd you install SSH? Maybe it's invoking the one that came with git for windows
$ which ssh
/c/Windows/System32/OpenSSH/ssh
maybe it's a git-bash quirk
It may be related to git-askpass
Found it. ```sh
$ export | grep askpass
declare -x SSH_ASKPASS="/mingw64/bin/git-askpass.exe"
What should that be set to?
Looks like I have to unset it
https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/235707 Ya, seems like the answer is unset it + make sure git thinks you're in a real tty

pretty depressing stuff imo, but the web hasn't been the web for a long time and Ive kind of already mourned for its death.
it's all bots: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Internet_theory
The dead Internet theory is an online conspiracy theory that asserts that the Internet now consists almost entirely of bot activity and automatically generated content that is manipulated by algorithmic curation, marginalizing organic human activity. These intelligent bots are assumed to have been made, in part, to help manipulate algorithms and...
That's one of those conspiracies where there is maybe a grain of truth in there, but it's proponents are too absolute and leaning into crazier things to take it seriously. If anything, I don't think its bots generating fake content, its mostly people generating fake/low effort/etc content because their goal is a quick buck, a moment of recognition.
But in a way, the responsible party for all of that is... algorithms that reward such content, which in a way are sorta like bots.
I don't understand why some people seek internet site cred
money and actual fame is the primary reason today I think.
internet is the new street corner
you better have street rep or they'll walk all over you and other such boomerisms
literally 1984
okay but like if that was true they'd all be talking to bots about the theory that the internet is full of bots

cuz it fucking doesnt respond
so like windows: "hey, it doesnt respond to my «pls shut down» request, idk"
sudo pkill vs end process are like night and day
i have to spam the end process button in windows because it asks the process to shut down it doesn't force it
pkill is like "ight fuck you" and that's it
yea exactly
like that's why i want you to kill it bro, it doesn't respond

i know youre most likely joking but today i found out from a podcast that theres a gpt 4 system card. and so much of the 60 pages was basically "the bad prompts" https://cdn.openai.com/papers/gpt-4-system-card.pdf
some of it was kinda mind-blowing
they really spent 6 months stopping the model release for this type of work, huh?
it was interesting
what does -> actually mean?
beacuse
there is no separation between arguments and return type
it is just return type which returns another type
which makes a lot of sense (no)

Currying
All functions are called one argument at a time.
average a would be similar to functools.partial(average, a) in Python
The -> is therefore right-associative: average is of type Float -> (Float -> Float), that is: a function that when given a float returns a function that when given a float returns a float.
isn't this a python server?

@reef geyser re: stick fighter games, do you remember that animation from way back in the day where the dude was fighting a little stick figure on their desktop?
Animation vs Animator, Alan Becker?
Yeah dude, that waas the inspiration lmao
so inventive and cool, the fact he still does these animations to this day (animation vs. math was sick)
YES that's it, whoa man I watched that so much when I was a kid, honestly so impressive considering the tech of the time
😮 I did not know, so used to animators dropping off the face of the earth
no, he has a strong presence on yt still
he makes plenty of shorts
and long-form content occasionally
but yeah, I'm going to have to spend time to see how fighting games work, really
and also implement netcode, oh god
I want rollback, but it's harder
Man rollback is such a game-changer though (literally). Honestly the devs coulda kept GGPO to themselves and made bank, but its awesome that it's open source and free
because every fucker knows that implementing delay-based is the fast track to alienating players in low-density regions
I can barely play with a friend in Vancouver, how do you think someone in Chile feels trying to play with someone in Brazil
19 frame delay headass
wdym, I love playing street fighter at 2 fps, really lets me strategize
You mean jiggling the ethernet cord really fast? Maaaybe
"I'll just shake the data around, that'll really mess with him!"
yeah, he mainly does AvM (animation vs minecraft) rn (or did, until few weeks ago), but i think he will be moving on to continue AvA (animation vs animator) and occasionally do something else
man that's cool, glad he's still around

Hi

Ppl says Asian eat dogs but actually we don't eat cosmetic dog
We eat dog that it's gene Is perfect for food
It is pug
It's dog in usa
It is cutedogs
True
Dog in here bark so much so we eat it
Dog in here ugly
Also it gene is for food
We believe that eating dog is giving it better life. Its like dog after life is be a human
We believe bring a dog is bad n be human s good
N eat dog make em have another life
Ofc we use something to hit their head n they r dead. Some people hit dogs when they re mating
We? Bro your from vn
Is vn an Asian country?
South korea is still Asia country
Ye ik
And bro I give you 5 days
And this obsession over
I js gotta preach to you how south Korea sucks
I want to work in sk very much
People says sk good
Hello peter @rough sapphire
I have high chance to work in sk
Easy to get to work in sk
So ... it probably suck but it is easier to get in than Japan or USA
Moreover there is export work in south korea advocate

Wanna play chess?
And Asia
Wise choice.
Norway nice but I can't go to Norway!!!
I cant
fuck Asia 😏
Norway is too expensive
Why
Thailand included?
Ik, and That’s the point
I can't live in Norway even if i have more
Bc it's has visa stuffs
I don’t wanna fuck a trans dude bro 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Wym
Thailand has 50% of it popularity transgender
Lol okay no worries imma go sleep
Didn't ask :)
What game you playing
In South korea and Japan n Taiwan there is export work advocate which I can ez go work in these country than others
Hmmmmm but still, I’ll go there
I dislike Asian countries for some reason
Not because I am racist but because I am not used to their languages and stuff
I dislike Asia too but I have no chance of going yo USA or europe
Their writings and languages are hard to learn
Then go to Canada
In order to live in USA an average person in Vietnam must work for 300 years for money
Nobody live that long
So if I want to live in USA I'll have to win 10 lottery or something
What's that mean though, once you live in USA you get same money as other Americans
I mean in order to pay for things to live in USA, I have to work in vn for 300 years to store enough money for paying stuffs to go to usa
Pay for visa plane ticket and etc
Probably not include some moni for embezzlement
A person in USA need to work for 8 years to buy a nice car, but a person in vn must work for 200 years
what about me
I want to play snake n ladders
Sure. 1 min
mhm
yeah i joined
yar
That feeling when you take a process from 45+ minutes runtime to < 2 minutes.
The follow-up moment when your team doesn't acknowledge the success because they started the weekend two hours ago.
@eternal depot @dusky yoke for your shared reference, lists and arrays are different, and it is important that beginners not conflate them. but if you want to address that point, it should be in the larger context of addressing the asker's question. and a help thread shouldn't be used to debate what is or isn't overly pedantic.
most of the time when peopel say array in python they do mean list, this guy was just being annoying for 0 reason idk whats up with him
passive aggressive and pedantic - worst combo
You are not allowed to use that command here. Please use the #bot-commands channel instead.
if you think they were being pedantic and passive aggressive for the sake of being both, you can have that opinion. but a user's help thread isn't the place to debate the validity of it.
so you think its okay for people to go into help threads and give advice unrelated to the question?
I have a bunch of infractions s
If someone uses terminology incorrectly, it's fine for someone to point that out. It would be even better if they pointed that out while also assisting with the question. But my point is that we don't want to litter the help threads with metadiscourse about who is or isn't being helpful.

Hey guys I had a quick question
I am building a site and have video files that are sometimes bigger than 800 mb
And I want to be able to embed them in discord
Does anyone knows how sites as YouTube do this and how I can do the same?
read about open graph
Ty
Ohh yeah
So I did that
But my video is not getting embedded by discord still
The thing also is when I send the raw link of a shorter .mov it tends to embed it correctly
But when I do it with my large videos it doesnt work
solving is so 20th century, man

how so?
you can learn how to make games with pygame
hi
I'm assuming you already know the basics
best thing for that is to read and then practice what you read. at that point, you'll realize that you didn't really understand the first time. so re-read and practice more. repeat until you feel you know it well. then go onto the next topic.
a few years later, you will realize that you don't actually know it well. at that point, you can dig deeper.
you'll know when you're entering the "intermediate" stage when writing the code is no longer the hard part.
that's when you can start learning the real stuff.
it'll be the equivalent of when you're a kid and can finally construct sentences and paragraphs. that's when you realize that "writing" is more than stringing together a few sentences.
for most people, a few years
learning to develop software is a lot like learning how to write and play music. best method is a combination of theory and practice. lots and lots of practice.
you can work harder
work with others who know more than you and learn from them
work with others who know less, and teach them. thereby revealing gaps in your own understanding.
IMO, the most important skill to develop as a young person is self-discipline. that is, the ability to 1) decide to do something and then 2) actually do it. IMO, it's far more important than smarts.
if you wait for "inspiration" you will wait forever and never actually acomplish much. again, IMO, of course
and be-assured, though it seems like an innate personality trait, self-discipline is a skill that you can develop like any other.
This. I say this so often. Just this.
then you're already half way there
I need to lose 20 pounds or so too
but I'm old. that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
most of life is about doing shit you don't wanna do so you can do what you do want to do
being overweight is affecting your health, by definition. I've accepted this.
I keep a list of interesting looking libraries I'd like to learn. I ignore it until a project comes along that needs it. Then, tedious, boring job I've done a thousand times becomes "ooh, time to play with new toy!"
that's a good idea

Asyncio provides coroutine-based concurrency for non-blocking I/O with streams and subprocesses. Threading provides thread-based concurrency, suitable for blocking I/O tasks. In this tutorial, you …
We discuss when you should async, threading and multiprocessing in Python and then we go through pitfalls in each multitasking option.

You'll have to practice discipline in general in life off and on, and really want it to get it.
I used to study for 4 hours a day and go on a walk thinking about how my friend codes all day at his job and that I want that discipline.
Right, I would just play games until I'm sick of them and played them all before. For me to tell people not to play a game at all would be hypocritical.
I watched every movie, played every game. I tried ten different ways to get rich. Got muscles and my diet going.
now I still want to get rich, I want to become smart. I was sort of fed up with the bullshit and didn't want anything else in a way. Buying things couldn't make me happy, there was nothing I could experience to make me happy.
That's the thing programming and other pure things are like a healthy outlet you can grind away at.
You can enjoy progress in life like a video game.
I'm just hoping I can make my life have a meaning in the grand scheme of things, and trying to do the most with each day to try to make it happen. Alot of things we deal with are self imposed mental limitations
Like, getting rich, it's good for your immediate needs but it doesn't have much meaning
If we are so fortunate to live in a prosperous place and make a good living , to just take advantage of that to excess without doing something for the world would suck.
But I think we can really make a difference
So I'm trying to get rich, and then make or find a meaning to it all.

how did you decide to enforce line endings?
just cuz I got accepted I dont want to submit a shitty resume @young shoal
they're not going to rescind over a resume dude
really?
Since it's my library now, linux line endings and a pre-commit hook will clean them for you.
and CI checks, presumably
precommit hooks running in ci
Anything that is expected to be run local is enforced in CI.

I like overleaf for templates
Can you locally download overleaf templates or do you have to use their little web editor thing?
I changed my resume a bit @stark prawn
Did I mention there were no tests? Darn thing weighs in at around 15k loc.
Because I'm not sure I'm keen on hosting my resume online anywhere.
yes, it's just a latex template
want mine 🥺
I got some constructive criticism from @solid elbow
you can just copy the latex
Self host your own dropbox.
I don't know shit about latex but I like the idea of having a CI/CD process for your resume to just spit out pdf's like you were working on lol.
lmao. don't
how is your resume going @foggy jungle
My resume is fine
well, you can if you want but it's not worth it
just use a makefile or even a shell script, the CI is not worth it
for resume?
fr the word resume 👎
maybe you want to try typst though. i've heard glowing reviews
easier to make different variants too apparently
with latex i'm stuck defining different things per variant, apparently in typst you can simply pass arguments to subfiles?
do you think I sound too cocky? @young shoal

``` i just do this for an anonymous version 😩
None of that makes any sense to me. I just want to type stuff.
Aggregated data from Guest Voice framework to deploy guest satisfaction engine, increasing guest engagement by 15%.
Implemented various regression forecasting techniques to predict booking statistics, increasing staff preparedness by 20%.
Designed business models to increase the hotel revenue using the fiscal reports, increasing revenue by 10% each year.
Created visualizations and wrote reports to the management to help them with their administrative decisions, increasing overall hotel performance by 17%.
does this look like Im too full of myself?
o. maybe try typst
we are the best performing hotel in the area
we sell out pretty much very fast
and we have more rooms than other hotels arounf
@low chasm has a decent typst template i think
I always wonder how you quantify things like staff preparedness
well I use booking statistics
before they put schedule up @stark prawn
I predict how busy we will get and inform the manager and they prepare the schedule based on my prediction
I use previous years data and combine with the trends
we used to be very shortstaffed on some days because the management didnt really figure out how busy we would get
plus its online
I go to a&m 👍
I dont have to go
arial
is it?
Air Force you say?
Where is the pydis helper reference smh
Oh fuck I probably could've put that in a college application.
They wanted to hear about volunteer shit.
I barely do anything around here.
What college are you applying to?
All of them ™️
MIT?
I don't actually know if it helped or not
I don't care to go to MIT.
Not playing the circus hoopla to try and get into some prestegious university.
Jiggly I was just typing in here, you don't have to ping me.
Im a pinger 😄
Well stop
That would go against rule 5
lol
Is it unethical?
okay so for my second position
Threatening users are you?
I said something like this
Murder?
you saw nothing
Used PSSA and Keystone State Test data to visualize trends in Columbia and Montour counties from 2017 to 2022.
Performed various statistical models to examine the effect of COVID-19 on test scores in Columbia and Montour counties.
Extracted granular data to create school and subject based visualizations, helping teachers develop solutions to challenging problems.
Wrote a technical report to the Chamber and school headmasters with findings, increasing their readiness and productivity by 12%.
Killing people is illegal is most jurisdictions
how is this? @stark prawn repetitive?
Legal combatants.
killing isn't necessarily illegal
@vale raven you literally open carry daily
CONCEALED
🤨
HUGE difference
ok but still
Im dead guys
how exactly does a doggo fire a gun? bite the trigger or something?
Rem killed me
Tail
Im now a ghost
just drop it on the ground
So just because I carry, I’m going to kill people?
Unless you have proof we can't ban rem.
Sig P320 moment
That’s something my dad would say
i mean, you kinda have to be prepared for the possibility of that happening
He is my friend
again, you mean
We have our differences but we get along
True
I was going to say, I'm pretty sure I've been banned without proof before.
jiggly likes rem, jiggly likes rem!
rem and jiggly sitting in a tree
@young shoal do you like my second job description?
looks fine
also is it okay to apply for jobs while in grad school?
If you are able to handle it
if you want to be a part time student, it's reasonable
I don't see why not, just be sure to communicate clearly that you're a student.
But make sure that the studying + job doesn't make you have no social life at all.
Jokes on you, I don't have a social life anyway.
what about us ;-;
well, yeah, if you did, you wouldn't be here
I know what I said.
😭
I'm pretty sure we'd either vibe hard in real life or there would be physical violence.
I don't see a world where there's an in-between.
he can't help it, he's a doggo
Roblox in your resume.
boblox
i can dynamically generate a resume using keywords :o
well, it's still pretty manual
but it'd be cool
so my programming languages, libraries, skills, projects, etc could all be reordered and swapped out
Make a CLI resume builder
./resume.exe -s python,java
With like 10 more flags you have to fill out to run it
Comically verbose
how does this look? @young shoal
Performed database optimization to run queries on sensitive patient data more efficiently, increasing performance of the department by 7%.
Compiled and uploaded raw patient data into the data warehouse to support senior database engineers.
Created weekly backup of all the data on the servers to ensure data integrity, increasing data reliability by 5%.
This sounds entirely unpractical but very entertaining.
Glad we're on the same wavelength
is my job description verbose? @tulip falcon
<- idiot didn't even see it
got 2 people so far heh. though perhaps, maybe i should not be trying to "get" people who want to help...
a TUI, of course
what optimization techniques did you use? how do you even measure data reliability?
well my previous resume had those
but they said its too much info
I used techniques like index scans
implicit conversions
well, add if they're interesting, don't add if they're not interesting
how is this? @young shoal for my last job
Used census data to perform statistical forecast analysis, helping local government branches with their city planning decisions.
Created visualizations and wrote reports to show insights about city services, increasing efficiency of local government branches by 10%.
Developed spatial data overlays to locate potential sites for city services, increasing productivity of local government by 17%.
i'm curious why you don't just use caree discussion
i hate the timer there @young shoal
well don't send messages so fast then
2 pages too long for a resume?
yes, imo
ehhh, not really. in my resume i have all of the necessary/valuable info on the first page and the rest contain all my achievements, projects, and misc stuff. business up front, party in the back
it's my understanding that no one will read a second page
In my experience, unless you are very experienced and several decades into your career, a 2 page resume is frowned upon. You should be tailoring your resume to the job you want and ensure it only has relevant information. It is not uncommon for the 2nd page and onwards of a resume to not be looked at at all.
I did a one page resumeee
Check it on #career-advice
I posted there
Thanks mister 🙂
I remember this otn
Improve my shitty Minesweeper solver.
Watch code bullet to get motivation.
Guys, is anyone bothered by the MacBook notch? (Including the taller menu bar)
Lmao a MacBook notch. I remember when the notch on the iPhone came out and people were talking about that, that's how long I've been not using apple products
@cunning pilot damn bro nice move (bio)
what kinda fking docs is this bruh
just fix the code
i remember somewhere seeing a guide titled "How to fix perfomance issues on Windows" with 1 step:
- switch to linux
well then it'd be "how to fix performance issues on Linux"
ok then:
- update
and boom
4% idle cpu usage
(i had ~15% before some kernel update)
lol
MY TABLET CAME!!! 😍 || @high verge thank you sm 🥰😍😘❤️ ||
Random question. Anyone know what the usecase of CouchDB is? I just saw a couple projects using it & afaict it's just a document-based DB that has a nice REST API? Am I missing something here or is Couch to Mongo as Sqlite is to Mysql?
this otn showed up fast
Got around to adding the important things to my TiddlyWiki
what's a tiddlywiki
browser-local single page knowledge base https://tiddlywiki.com/
Joe Armstrong mentioned it in a talk
it's cute and does what i wanted a post-it note on the fridge to do
sick, what headset and controllers are ya using?
You want one with best display resolution you can get
that's the spec to go for? not refresh rate or latency?
Hm don't know if they push those specs, you want like super high resolution because it's per eye , don't want a screen door effect. This set is running at 72hz
I see
Also field of view, don't know if that's inherit of your resolution
Source: someone recreated all these effects in HTML5 O.o https://tholman.com/cursor-effects/
JavaScript mouse effects that follow your cursor or finger!
Lmao clock
I wish I could spawn another monitor to write some notes on
My eyes hurt now too time to take a break
I was like switching between looking down at my phone and back into the headset probably make me feel like that
rofl
after so many many days of practice, i can finally play 3 or 4 out of 7 or 8 variations of my favorite piece 💀
it's absolutely miserable
to practice
what do u think of the piece
i absolutely love the 3rd and 5th variations
8 years ago
it's much older than that
Oh I thought you recorded a video of you playing it
the composer himself passed away in 1992, it's fairly recent i'd say
i'll probably record my playing too
i can't play the 2nd variation completely, so i need to practice that
Wow you're gud at your instrument then , what you play it on? Lol
it's violin
idk what you mean though with "what you play it on"
btw my playing isn't as good as hers lol she's really really good and makes it look easy
i player at a slower tempo
I was just being dumb.
Impressive stuff really
thanks
Like you do c++ program and haskell, js, python, speak multiple languages, play instruments
So cool!
i kinda suck at all of them lol
probably because i compare myself with very very awesome people
gotta say i've gotten a bit lazzier lately. and wasting my time a lot
We are coming in waves ebb and flow
you play violin?
yes
favorite piece
oh
hell naw that piece is difficult af
my fingers would be swollen after that
"When I was on the Ops team, I deleted the geography of San Francisco from the DoorDash database, and so it just shut down for the day -- drivers couldn't drive, people couldn't order food, and restaurants couldn't get orders.
And it was one of those things too where you looked in the database, and it said [XXX] made this change.
To make it even worse, the way that DoorDash would feed its employees was by placing DoorDash orders for dinner. And so we couldn't place the orders for dinner, so nobody could eat food."
💀
bruh this podcast is SPICY
Listen to this episode from Ken's Nearest Neighbors on Spotify. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Daniel Parris. Daniel is a data scientist and data journalist with over eight years of experience. He was one of DoorDash's first data science hires, and he currently invests in early-stage data products through Dash VC. He run the newsletter...
how do you just delete san francisco
pog
You're the where to my delete
"There was actually a time where we were asked to pick whether we wanted to be an IC or manager.
And I sat down, looked the VP in the eyes, and said 'IC'.
She was like, 'No. Manager.'"
apparently his communication skills were too good
lol
now theyre talking about how soft skills can be a great differentiator in your career
the illusion of choice
someone make the meme where it's the cow and the two hallways
where is sg
i see him lurking
my soft skills are excellent
Idk what those are hahahaha
it mirrors what my data viz prof said in grad school, whose day job was analytics director at a F500
technical skills can get your foot in the door but soft skills will get you the promotion
something something
I'm likeable I think
"Hi Skyglow, I hope you are doing good!"
"Here's an obscure excel error that there's no easy fix, help please"
Not doing good anymore
"who's sg?"
"oh hes our excel wizard. go to him for excel help."
"oh okay"
if it makes you feel better, this guy just shared another bomb on the podcast
and im kinda shook ngl
"Hi Bob, how is X on the dashboard calculated? Or, could you provide the repo?"
Mistakes were made
JS repo
JS repo
.ts file (w/e the f that is)
.html files
el oh el. ts is typescript. usually used to give typing to javascript or something. idk ask a web dev lol.
bro i took 5 minutes and im still shook for this guy omg
My dumb naive ass: "Oh, there's a variable somewhere that will say 'XYZ = X / Y' "
if it makes you feel better x2
i did the same thing you did to figure out how we scored stuff
i was able to get it but that was after trying to wrap my head around dotnet code
XD
you might have to ask for a link for the right file since navigating JS projects are a nightmare
well?
psv i took 10 minutes and im still having 2nd-hand heart palpitations
omg
this is debatably worse than the first bomb
😬
Was it: "Excel is a valid database"?
I will end you
Yes
Do you know how the UK gov is so resistant to sql injection attacks?
Theres no sql to use in excel
not even this. i have to write a short story at this point. ill give this section another listen.
Send help I just saw some black object race across the floor, but didn't see what it actually was. Looked like a spider
It went somewhere...
POV: You are a new data scientist at a food delivery company. You have imposter syndrome and worry that the other data scientists will call you out on the accuracy of your models, since you never went through formal training.
-
The reason you were brought onto the team from another one is because your PoC Lead Gen model showed great promise.
-
After a lot of work refining, scaling, and incorporating it into workflows for internal stakeholders, you and the team celebrate on a job well done.
-
Next week arrives, and you begin receiving Slack messages all starting off with the same phrase: "What the fuck."
(2/2)
-
The house is on fire. There are pings from 200+ individuals, basically the entire sales org. You remember their compensation is based on how many restaurant leads they bring to the platform — what your model was supposed to help with.
-
You deep dive into the data. You remember the upstream team didn't want to pay for expensive Google or Yelp data, so they settled with Foursquare data.
-
Pause. You discover the data quality is abysmal, some data over a decade old...
-
You get called into a meeting with the VP of Sales. Together, you review a google sheets of 4000+ items where the majority weren't even restaurants...hundreds of strip clubs, McKinsey was on there, even DaVita, which is a dialysis center...
-
You have to do damage control and sit down and talk with over 200+ stakeholders 1:1, helping to explain what happened and what was supposed to happen instead, trying to build back lost trust...
-- a creative retelling of Daniel Parris' story from the podcast
ok im done. sorry for the text wall
bruh
@young shoal @rugged owl my meeting got cancelled so that text wall is what you get instead.
oi, at least that dragonfly got the "capture and release" treatment. Instead of the usual "fly swatter" treatment.
Trusting the data was the first mistake. Also, pay for data? PFFFT. Pull a startup & spin up that request + list of proxies.
Fun fact, our description field is limited to like 120 chars.
REPORTED IT TO HIS SUPERVISOR BELIEVING IT TO BE A POTENTIAL
Potential what
lol this was technically doordash startup days
🕯️
VARCHAR(100)
or in this case 120
YOU WISH. MORE LIKE I WISH. This is how it gets sent to us from the data sources.
i meant this was how the original DDL was probably
Also, why is it always: many days of nothing, then literally just today, multiple different request from different people.
