@vale raven TIL that python is not slow. Windows... Windows is slow.

uneven pine
#

ST has always been low on Windows and that's something that has never been a secret

#

ST is half oft he average python script's runtime or more

jaunty wraith
tranquil iron
#

no, you're slow

uneven pine
jaunty wraith
#

ah okay

uneven pine
#

Windows is actively working on it, they're ripping the NT kernel inside out

#

my theory is that they're about to implement a version of the linux stack...which is going to be wild

thick osprey
uneven pine
#

But W10->W11 I noticed about a 15% reduction in ST on most things, not just Python

grave cove
#

wildin

uneven pine
#

crazy, even

grave cove
#

ballin

vale raven
#

I mean it makes sense

#

It'd be like Ubuntu

grave cove
#

Or mint

uneven pine
# jaunty wraith inb4 Windows distro for Linux

My theory is as follows:

Windows eventually releases "Windows" using a proprietary Linux-based kernel that supports the Windows API/SDK/Runtimes but is primiarily a Linux stack and filesystem, turning Windows itself into effectively a strange proprietary distro

tranquil iron
#

I heard mint is fresh

uneven pine
#

Windows ##/20XX will remain as an NT-based product alongside it

#

for at least 1 or 2 release cycles

jaunty wraith
#

I'm not sure that won't happen

uneven pine
#

they told me the same thing about WSL2

#

that it wouldn't happen

#

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

tranquil iron
#

I'm sure it won't happen

#

I'm hedging my betsd

tranquil iron

it would mean rewriting literally millions of lines of code

#

for no real end-user benefit

foggy jungle
tranquil iron
#

might as well just burn a few billion $'s in the parking lot

foggy jungle
#

I cannot cope with the wasted time.

uneven pine
#

I went the opposite way Kernel

#

my ecosystem is all VSC and Powershell

foggy jungle
#

... why?

jaunty wraith
uneven pine
#

because I really enjoy Powershell actually

#

PS7 is awesome

#

and it's all cross platform

thick osprey
jaunty wraith
#

powershell is miles better than linux shells for scripting

uneven pine
#

no swithcing between shells on different OSes, no fucking with WSL when I don't need it

foggy jungle
tranquil iron
uneven pine
#

I can use the same editor, same plugins, and same shell on Windows, Linux, and Macshit

jaunty wraith
#

I just don't like it for everyday use

grave cove
tranquil iron
uneven pine
#

not to mention software incompatbility

jaunty wraith
grave cove
uneven pine
#

Can't effectively use Adobe products, play many of the games and sims I run, etc etc etc on crapux or macshit

#

I ran linux distros daily for over 10 years, only really stopped this last year

thick osprey
uneven pine
#

so don't even start with "it's not so bad just try it"

#

I've tried it all, I've ujsed it all, I've experienced it all.

foggy jungle
uneven pine
thick osprey
jaunty wraith
uneven pine

thick osprey
foggy jungle
#

Oh I'm not implying you don't know it or anything, I just enjoy the consistency I guess.

uneven pine
#

same here, that's why I picked something that can work on all platforms

#

we have the same idea, just different execution

#

yours is platform assimilation, mine is evnironment assimilation

foggy jungle
#

grave cove
foggy jungle
uneven pine

I try to avoid terminals whenever possible, text-based input is quite clunky and dated, whenever I can use my mouse with a UI, I'm there for it

grave cove
grave cove
uneven pine
#

obviously no DEs or even WMs on servers, that's silly

uneven pine

but with a nice interface frontend for SSH/SFTP like VSC, it can feel like you have a WM anyway

That's a pretty sword, but I prefer the yatagan sword as the most versitile yet effective sword shape => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yatagan

The yatagan, yataghan or ataghan (from Turkish yataฤŸan), also called varsak, is a type of Ottoman knife or short sabre used from the mid-16th to late 19th centuries.
The yatagan was extensively used in Ottoman Turkey and in areas under immediate Ottoman influence, such as the Balkans and the Caucasus.

I can't recall the guy's name, but some french cavalry officer did a detailed study of the effectiveness of different types of swords in a variety of situations in the early 1800's and found that the yatagan won hands down.

That aside, this is for a friend's company who does this nonsense. They want metrics against the size of the queues, the oldest file age of a queue, and alerts against stale files.

foggy jungle

Interesting. Data loss prevention and data retention (or really, just responsibly handling document lifecycles) is pretty fascinating to me on an enterprise scale.
I'm a terribly unorganized person at least tech wise, so my mind immediately jumped to an organizational tool to properly archive/documents at the end of their lifecycles.

back to the nothing for me. thankfully this place is still good source of knowledge. i should not have engaged here

prime lagoon
#

so if a page has signs of many of that, i'd simply not support them. easy as that

#

i do generative art without AI involved though as well hand-made art. i value that as well as hand-made art too. not things that is only prompt and basically absolutely zero efforts, even less than sketching.

tardy rain
#

What is the line then? If i drizzle paint on a canvas is it more valuable because a human did it?

#

Valuable might be the wrong word but you get rhe idea

#

More artsy

prime lagoon
#

i wouldn't put value on a drizzle on a canvas unless you did it via code and applied mathematics to it

#

one of those is not like the other. one of those involves understanding of mathematics, and some bit of physics, and understanding of the language too

tardy rain
#

Im sure jackson pollock had an excellent grasp of mathematics

prime lagoon
#

i'm sure he does, but i doubt he did it on his work. i consider his work as trash

tardy rain
#

But human effort was expended in every single painting of his

prime lagoon
#

yes. but minimal one can argue.

tardy rain
#

What about andy warhol?

#

Im sure if you ask 1000 people 999 would say his work is art

prime lagoon
#

not really sure where to put him on. i haven't done much look into his work and the process involved

tardy rain
#

Its all garbage ms paint tier stuff

prime lagoon
#

the silkscreen process makes me doubt him

tardy rain
#

You could randomly type into midjourney and get better looking shit than his

prime lagoon
#

you could already make similar work to his own via code easily too

#

or do it manually and simply change color. i don't put in value on his work either

tardy rain
#

My philosophy is as long as I like it, its art

#

Thats about it

#

Doesnt matter if it took a human a thousand hours or a computer 3 ms

prime lagoon
#

on the computer part, there's a thing called generative art

#

to me, it's the application of code that matters. as long as the person who did it is original

tardy rain
#

Original how?

prime lagoon
#

as in the person did the code and the work behind the scene

tardy rain
#

Everything you see in the art world draws inspiration from someone else

#

Thats a weird definition tho

prime lagoon
#

yes, but there's still some degree of labor involved

tardy rain
#

Should an artist build their own paint brushes, canvas, mix their own paints?

prime lagoon
#

that's a strawman. you know what i mean by labor

tardy rain
#

I dont lol, the parallel is that the tool here (the code or model or paintbrush) and the art are separate

prime lagoon
#

i'm talking about doing the mental work, the physical work of using the tools to create a picture.

tardy rain
#

So the prompt

#

The prompt engineering is the tool

Not the model

@rough sapphire

rough sapphire

yea

#

the danger

naive tapir
#

Each site has its own Local Storage. I said it would be dangerous because potentially sensitive information could be stored in Local Storage. If sites shared the storage, a malicious site could read tokens from the storage and steal logins.

rough sapphire
#

sorry how they share storage?

naive tapir
#

They don't. Or are you saying you want a shared storage?

rough sapphire
#

no you say if sites shared the storage then malicous site can read it

#

is there a way two web domain share local storage/

#

?

#

you mean malicous application can read it from user harddisk?

#

or ssd whatever

naive tapir
#

If they shared Local Storage, a malicious site could just do something like localStorage.getItem('token'), and then send that back to their server and now they potentially have your access token if a site stored it in the token key.

And I don't know how to share accross domains. The need for that is likely very niche. I've never needed this. Maybe set up an API on one site and have the other request information from it.

Why do you need this?

rough sapphire
#

no no i get you wrong.nobody needs it XXD

rough sapphire

if the localStorage is not indivudual for domain then it is ok

#

if you mean hacker can get it from user storage then it is ok too

And on top of security, there would be key collisions, which would be a nightmare.
