summer knot

summer knot

compressed air is actually not a good idea, because it can simply drive dirt deeper into places it's not supposed to be

vaccumes are superior to compressed air

young shoal
summer knot

Some of my attitudes about this were shaped from having lived in a house that was in bad shape and was difficult to keep clean (I finally moved out), so I got very fastidious about the parts of the house I could directly control

thick osprey

Ha! Just need some food (eating lunch) and to chat with ya'll!

jaunty wraith
#

did you find the cause

thick osprey
#

Not a 4xx on my side at all but on AWS's side between the lambda and the eventbridge. Task timed out.

#

Eventbridge would have resent it. S'all good.

#

and it is related to that sudden 200+ invocation spike.

jaunty wraith
#

so backpressure?

thick osprey
#

200+ events coming in (triggers). Those are light weight, not much to do but can clog the tiny database we use. Then someone closed all 200+ events (resolves) at once. Those aren't so lightweight but don't lean on the database nearly as much.

So the 4xx was a sign of building pressure and the spike was the floodgate of someone resolving 287 incidents all at once.

we're thinking of self-hosting it

thick osprey

Not yet. We're spinning up an open source instance of it this next week or so. Going to play around, see how it plugs into things, and see what value we can squeeze out of it.

#

Your TAM is almost spot on. We're three years into using PD and our teams are just starting to clammor for automated remediation options.

jaunty wraith
#

the demo was cool ngl

#

they have a lot of builtin integrations

thick osprey
#

Oh it is a glorious thing. For as much shit as I give their API, I do really like the platform of PagerDuty. The concept is solid and the patterns it pushes teams into are sustainable long-term.

jaunty wraith
#

we've been using PD for 5 years or so (I've not been 5 years here)

#

thick osprey

PagerDuty is an alert aggregation machine and human pager. That's it. They put a lot of other stuff on the side but their bread and butter is on-call scheduling, notification layers, and aggragation of events (alerts).

jaunty wraith
#

true true, we were just looking to use it fully

thick osprey
jaunty wraith
#

have you used servicenow before?

#

last I used it, it was quite confusing for the team

thick osprey
#

I haven't and I'm so glad I'm not on that train. What an absolute unit of a platform. Chonk. Chonkers to the max.

#

When I interact with it, it is from the save distance of a few tiny API calls to get specific details and nothing more. Other than that I hope only to have to use the UI to fill in fields here and there.

#

I think we have a team of something close to 12 full-time engineers just driving that ship. Huge platform. Good luck to them. haha

jaunty wraith

There's two issues:

  • The order in which arguments are evaluated is unspecified
  • you're legally only allowed to modify something once between sequence points, this is modifying x multiple times
tranquil iron
#

there is no defined order of operation for a single expression in C

acoustic moss
#

hmm

tranquil iron
#

that includes args to functions

tardy rain

Fun innit?

acoustic moss
#

will it be worth it to argue with a TA that he shouldnt dock off points for not answering 6 7 7

cosmic quiver
#

yes

#

if you compile with clang it's 5 6 7

acoustic moss
#

fun

tranquil iron
#

a lot also depends on the actual implementation of printf in the stdio lib you're using

#

remember, printf is usually a macro that forwards to a function that uses varargs

#

while whole stdio infrastructure is quite complicated and byzantine

#

it is not safe to pass anything other than simple variables to printf/sprintf/fprintf/etc

low chasm
#

watch me pass the most complex structure imaginable and have my c compiler implode on itself

tranquil iron
#

back when I started my career, it was common to 1) compile some C code, 2) take the resulting assembly and hand tune it, 3) drop the assembly back into your source code to replace the original C implementation

low chasm
#

sounds like a pain

tranquil iron
#

back then, we would literally sweat every bit. I recall arguments about if a variable in a struct should be 4 bits or 5 bits (to make it future safe)

#

bitfields ftw

#

almost no one uses bitfields anymore. the reuslt is we need 2GB to load a silly text editor

low chasm
#

nowadays you can just download more ram ๐Ÿ˜ค

tranquil iron

the original MacOS UI toolkit had overlapping windows, drop-down menus, bitblit, control widgets, print drivers, networking stack, file I/O, sound/audio, etc, etc. .. all in 64KB of code

#

it was a freaking work of art

#

and man, the tricks it played in order to work... the core print drivers would automatically rewrite itself in order to adjust to some printer types

#

can't do that sort of shit anymore, lol

#

oh, and did I forget to mention it also had multiple variable width fonts and multiple script system support.

tardy rain
#

Dont think anyone wants to anymore

The distro package implements a robust and inclusive way of retrieving the information about a distribution based on new standards and old methods, namely from these data sources (from high to low precedence):

  • The os-release file /etc/os-release if present, with a fall-back on /usr/lib/os-release if needed.
  • The output of the lsb_release command, if available.
  • The distro release file (/etc/*(-|_)(release|version)), if present.
  • The uname command for BSD based distrubtions.

[L,U] = lu(A) factorizes the full or sparse matrix A into an upper triangular matrix U and a permuted lower triangular matrix L such that A = L*U.

not sure what you mean; that looks lower-triangular to me

why shouldn't L[2,1] be 0.66?
