I don't think they necessarily think they're correct at the expense of other protestants

solid elbow
#

that is not my understanding...

#

Conversionism, or belief in the necessity of being "born again", has been a constant theme of evangelicalism since its beginnings.[3] To evangelicals, the central message of the gospel is justification by faith in Christ and repentance, or turning away, from sin. Conversion differentiates the Christian from the non-Christian, and the change in life it leads to is marked by both a rejection of sin and a corresponding personal holiness of life. A conversion experience can be emotional, including grief and sorrow for sin followed by great relief at receiving forgiveness. The stress on conversion differentiates evangelicalism from other forms of Protestantism by the associated belief that an assurance will accompany conversion.[40] Among evangelicals, individuals have testified to both sudden and gradual conversions.[41][42]

#

they believe that if you are not "born again", you are not truly a Christian, so far as I understand.

small coral
solid elbow
#

and they identify as evangelical christians?

small coral
#

i think so

#

we're identified as "born again" christians

solid elbow
#

well, that'd be evangelical, then

#

well, what are your beliefs about christians who have not been "born again"?

small coral
#

they're christians

frozen crane
solid elbow
#

ok, perhaps. But my impression has always been that evangelicals believe that christians who have not been born again will go to hell.

tulip falcon
frozen crane
solid elbow
#

ok, but... isn't that still them believing they're "right"? That a christian of a non-evangelical denomination only gets to heaven if they happen by chance to luck into doing what the evangelicals say you must do?

frozen crane
solid elbow
#

Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_again

In addition to using this phrase with those who do not profess to be Christians, some Evangelical Christians use the phrase and evangelize those who belong to other Christian denominations or groups. This practice is based on the belief that non-Evangelical Christians, even those Christians who are professed Christians, are not "born again" and do not have a "personal relationship with Jesus." They therefore believe that they should evangelize to non-Evangelical Christians in the same way that they would evangelize to people who do not profess the Christian faith.

#

that does say "some Evangelical Christians", to be fair. I had always thought it was "all", but perhaps not.

frozen crane
#

(As an aside, this conversation is strictly about discussing what these beliefs are. Not making a judgement about whether or not those beliefs are good or bad. Which the #code-of-conduct would preclude.)

stark oasis
#

hello

rough sapphire
#

@stark oasis , have you been able to run a good daw and/or a good video editing software

#

?

#

by the second i actually mean davinci

#

by the first, whichever you've found good enough

#

mostly i care about the daw though. Ive been thinking about using wine to install a lite ableton version but i havent been able to make linux-based stuff use my external audio card yet

stark oasis
#

So, I'm not a professional video editor, but I find that kdenlive works for any simple edits or clips that I need to do.
As for audio DAWs, I honestly think you're better off just using Windows or MacOS. Audio production is so messy, and all the solutions and plugins are expecting you to be on a system that isn't Linux. There's a good tool for every job, and while some people may think its worth it to fight the uphill battle, it doesn't make sense to me to use Linux for audio production.

#

That is an official lunixman(tm) take

#

@rough sapphire

rough sapphire
#

Kdenlive is okay, but, it does not have enough video fx

stark oasis
#

yeah my use case is usually very simple. Ive also used shotcut before, but that program is not as stable as kdenlive

rough sapphire
#

I prefer davinci because of the mirror fx and the better colorkey actually

stark oasis
#

Ive used that before on windows but not on linux which is why i didnt mention it

rough sapphire
#

Im sure there should be a video fx linux thingy, even if its console based, but i havent found it, thus why i crave for davinci

#

but i cannot figure out how to make it work with opengl without catastrophically failing

#

regarding daws

#

Linux does have a lot of audio editing stuff

#

But 1- i cannot figure out how to make it work with bigger sample sizes

#

and 2 - the linux daws are not ableton, ableton has a very specific workflow that is unbeatable imo

#

i should try bitwig, but

#

those two are my main issues with linux

#

are what makes my computer be a dual booting hybrid

#

and everytime i boot windows to have fun with those programs i end up having to wait 40mins to 1 hr for the updates to stop hoarding my disk usage

stark oasis
#

I'm definitely not saying it isn't possible to do, clearly people do it. But that's exactly it. I'm not really interested in alternative open source audio production in the same way I am for other things. I want Ableton, I want AutoTune Pro, I want the same tools that other people who are producing audio are using. I don't want to bash my head into the wall trying to make things work that only 1 of every 1000 people are using.

#

but yeah

#

I don't dual boot anymore. I just have two systems.

rough sapphire
#

so you use windows/macosx for audio?

stark oasis
#

I use Windows for audio production, although its not something I do very often. I have played around a bit with it though, more than video editing.

#

But in terms of work, programming, networking, systems.... I use linux for all that

rough sapphire
#

ive found the same

#

even gaming

#

linux just works better, but i havent been able to make it work for those two cases

stark oasis
#

I don't play video games that often and when I do its usually like really old ass games that run on emulators and linux is great for that.

#

I played classic Doom recently

#

on lunix

rough sapphire
#

there's a thing in steam that ports windows games to linux

#

works fairly well

stark oasis
#

Ive never tried it but its definitely come a long way because of Steam

rough sapphire
#

the main issue however is with the audiocard

#

is the long-tier issue with drivers

stark oasis
#

I dont generally have issues with my audio on linux for just basic output.

#

but I would never want to have a complicated audio config for linux

rough sapphire
#

no, basic no

#

the issue is, when you got something big going on in a daw you might want to go to a bigger sample size, which delays audio output but gives more time for "real time" audio processing

stark oasis
#

But yeah its things like that, that is why I'd rather just use something other than Linux.

#

for Audio production

rough sapphire
#

asio is good, but its not as good as the external card

#

you were on the right track with the \@! atom. The only real trick to it is that the line foobarbaz matches \(bar\)\@! because there are some positions on the line where a bar isn't. So you need to say, at every position in the line, this pattern matches only if this isn't a location where that negative pattern is matched

polar galleon
#

right

#

not very convenient to use, unfortunately

solid elbow
#

yeah - well, \(foobar\)\@!foo is "this position matches foo but not foobar", which is perfectly reasonable to use - but it's position-oriented, not line oriented. There's no convenient way to say "this line does not match X", only "this position does not match X". You need to do extra work for "this line does not match"

lament cairn

I don't care much about the "GPT will replace devs!!" thing - I don't know enough about AI ot software engineering to be absolutely, 100% certain - but I'm a tiny bit concerned about using youtube videos as "proof"

wraith hound

so i either trust some tool to edit my code... or i do it myself in a way i trust?

Apprehension is understandable, but I would suggest you explore the capabilities of ChatGPT from your professional standpoint as opposed to informing your opinion through YouTube videos. You might draw some intuition up as to the major flaws with GPT-generated code, and the difficulty that comes with trying to iterate upon it.

tardy rain
wise sierra

so i can say

i'm doing coding na ?

tardy rain
#

do you have a job as a software engineer?

foggy jungle
#

A very large portion of the code we troubleshoot here is sourced from ChatGPT or other AI tools. It is often very confidently incorrect, and requires quite a bit of reading to try and make sense of the code it produces. 😅 I'm pretty confident developers as a whole are in no danger for the moment.
