anyone wanna practice english with me in vc?
Why
Nice
yeah sure
what are you working on?
Why I don't have access to talk?
you need voice verification
Yes u have to be voice verified
How do I do it?
Tap on the voice verification
Where it is?

I don’t like voice verification, feel like it does more harm than good. harm as in less community, good as in what? Less degenerates I guess? But also people that are good people would rather not go through the hassle and find somewhere else
And just because someone isn’t a bad person today doesn’t mean they won’t be one tomorrow
Same with the good side so it’s just not a good thing for a place trying to foster a community
Humans are social creatures we need that interaction beyond text chats
Still the voice gate will stay.
Yeah of course
The powers that be have made a decision and backing down from it looks like incompetence
its good your kittys did not eat you while your sleeping @peak depot
You should have been here before we implemented the voice gate
Yeah I bet there was a lot more of a community
It was definitely an improvement
Of course there’s bad apples
it was daily and almost hourly screaming, blasting stuff in vc (so I heard)
Yeah well punish the many for the few
Yeah but it was more like the voice chat being continually disrupted by people coming in to troll
I will earn my voice privs by complaining about it lol
It actually doesn't take very long to meet the voice gate requirements. It's a fairly low bar
It's just to indicate a minimal level of investment in being a member of the community
Intellectual Security Lock @terse garden
It’s fairly low for people that like to text chat sure lol
I don’t
Sure, but if you're in here we're typically watching the chat
We try to keep people involved
And some of our folks (LX) only type
voice gates are good , but still doesnt block the shitheads
It stops the folks that it was built to stop
@rugged root can you teach me about github :3
ya , screamers and such
Anything specific about it?
yeah how do i make my github profile look very apppealing to future jobs
oh how do i contribute to other people projects
Fork, Code, make PR
I remember Mike Judge saying data entry was the worst job he ever had
I think that's what he based Office Space on
What's a what?
I use linux to rescue windows machines
Same
its a bloatware
Of course, it’s mindless. You read paper and type it in.

i am just new to programming with python . i did watched little courses about it. now i don't know where to start and what to start . can anyone help me with that , i mean any roadmap , like where to read about python datastructure if it's needed , or any reference that i just don't know . can anyone help me with that?
hi
same as you
!resources Well we've got a bunch of other resources on our site
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
oh sorry i just defen ,
cookie islands sounds better
@normal dawn are self taught learner
If the courses/videos didn't really help you like.. get it, then I recommend "A Byte of Python", which is free on its respective site
I've never done well with courses or videos
really ? then how you just learned it ?
Books like the one I mentioned, helping out people on the server and other servers, asking a lot of questions
A lot of frustrations
free code camp is best , i think
oh , ok then ty.
i guess that's ptw , right ?
If you need help with understanding a concept or just need something explained we'll be happy to do so
thank you , lucky me then 🙂
Eh, I wouldn't go that far. I just like helping people learn. I like seeing that lightbulb moment where they suddenly get it
for beginner datacamp.com is good i guess
fair.
for the documentation

Am I able to add a word to the dictionary in VSC? Since it’s a string value, I didn’t think a person’s name would stop it from running.
Just get rufus, then download the iso and with rufus put the iso into the usb
yeah, thats the next step
cool, its syntax is easy and cool
yeah, I use it a little at work
oh! so, you work with python?
theres one project at work that I need to maintain
that is python
day to day I use golang and javascript
Am New here
@true jay welcome
i'm learning golang, @deep wave i really like it

Hi
Thanks! me too, it's like you have to study again
How can I learn Python as a beginner kindly put me through.

gin
my pc aint mathing
gin is beautiful

I've started to care less and less about individual frameworks
Why?
there is too much to worry about
You're right
ui, apis, libraries, database, external teams, CI
yeah, i'm trying to go for senior engineer and now i need to show more leadership skills
Good luck
sucks
why?
I kinda just wanna code
The same, but I'm a newbie
Dealing with people it's hard
and more if they are clients
yeah, my job wants seniors to worry about pleasing higher leadership and stuff like that
you get your actual job with leetcode problems?
That sucks
cool
yeah, it was nice but I still needed to do a small "interview"
coding interview?
they just had like a 10 min conversation about myself
yeah, internal stuff is much easier
yeah, it's different when you are an external
this is my second chance with the interview ahha
i recently moved internally to another team. It was only a 45 min chat about some internal tools
got a pay bump and an easy interview
learn Go and see (C)

hi people!
How goes it

Just a dirty love letter confession.
Make it vague so they don't know who it's from or who it's to.
It'll make everyone uncomfortable for the rest of the event. You'll then be able to use the distraction to pick something good.

How didn't they get banned?

Isn't that technically NSFW?

Yeah, can't get it by spamming.

It is definitely spamming
Okey then am truly sorry for disturbing
you're just going to get a two week voice ban for spamming like this
please delete these messages since they don't contribute to anything other than the message count

i am new in this group so what should i do
Welcome!
Explore, mingle.
If you have python questions, ask away.
what is mingle
a lot of things are
Done
Response, Aes encrypted (:
Yes, and I don't think NSFW content belongs in a programming discord. Especially an official moderated one.
i am also new in python what about you
so uhh.. @vocal basin would you recommend?
New?
When did you start
python is new for him actually
I've been here for a year, but coding in python before that.
that was quick
only 4 moths
gushing over magical girls
piece of media being nsfw overall doesn't make all its parts nsfw
If someone sends that here, wouldn't you tell them to delete it?
suggestion use VSC pycharm is a RAM EATER
I dont think there are many more gifs that I can send that are still sfw
And if persisting, to ban them temporarily or permenantly?
That's concerning.

yeah gushing over magical girls is... unique
give me some suggestion about how to start python web dev.
Am not staying with python
I'll move to c# then c++
My goal is game dev
Python is just for basics
I mean... its great... but not very sfw
using mahoako as the example:
most of imagery with utena in her normal form doesn't require any moderation action,
most of imagery of her in her magic form absolutely does prompt either asking to delete or immediate removal
yup
pycharm, nore is the tools made from that company good for c++, nore c#.
like i said, use MVS or VSC for python.
MVSC for c++ C#
flask
for C#, either Rider or VS proper with Resharper, unless Microsoft finally made VS be on par with those
i am new to python @quiet plover, i guess Mr.Hemlock can help you with that better than me
yea not sure ab c#, just know that MVC is built for handling both.
who is this and how i connect it
MVC is a pattern; did you mean just VS?
VS recently started being more useful for C# thanks to Roslyn getting open sourced
Microsoft Visual studio
oops MVS ?
i guess you have to go the voice chat 1. or simply mention Mr.Hemlock with @ sign
@rugged root hlo
there is, like, one person in RPLCS that seemed to semi-consistently get in trouble for that in a certain off-topic thread; seems like mods did stop that from happening anymore
Am just using it to learn programming basics and foundations
+
I will use mvs when i switch to c#
Is it a bad idea?
I see. All good.
i mean i know people who use it, and i personally think it's only for companys. would i recommend it for beginners: no.
VSC would be good for beginners.
imo PyCharm is slightly better initially because it does more for the programmer
also enforces code style
I used mvs when i started with c++
I loved it
VSC takes some time to set up
☠️
Ill change it
i am really sorry if i couldn't help you. idk if data structure is essential for web developer or not , but i am reading it now; you can search about it , maybe it become helpful
for C++ nowadays I prefer VSC over VS
Yeah
True
I tried to start c++ first
I drop it after 2 weeks
ok i have one new question can i ask you
sure
I mostly use C++ because I need to integrate some things into Rust
if i want to rate my project of pygame module how i rate and how internet rate it
So am gonna learn c++ eventually
you mean rating to the quality and conventions you used ?
yes
Yay ban voice is over

can you give me some suggestion
i guess you just need to rate , you just need to read the official document and then everything goes well after that .
or you can show your project to an expert to find the weak point (if you mean this)
or idk ask ai to rate as a rule you want
like if i made a project of 200 or something like than how its weak point how i solve it
i ask chatgpt about it give me some suggestion and also hard or advance coding but i don't understand it
i don't think about advance code ..
you can send the github link of your project if there is any ?
no i don't have github
is that any another way ??
yeah , try github XD
can i give my code to your dm??
or you can get stream rule if you ask the admins i guess
i idk what is stream rule
no if you don't mind
forexample you can share you screen and we can see you screen for a period of time
so how
@rugged root can you give @quiet plover streaming rule ?
i am just new to this server idk how to do it without this way
best programming fundamental/basic tutorial
?
Automate the Boring Stuff with Python by Al Sweigart
i kindda feel rushed with " bro code"
what does that mean bro
guys do you have any idea how i can stream something if i wanted ?
well i mean i watch the python tutorial by "bro code" and he kind'da fast when i apply what he say i get stuck
I see. I've never tried watching tutorials from "bro code." The book I recommended is pretty good - you might want to check it out. It's free
thanks
can i download it ? + his channel good ?

MY IT PROBLEM!

I printed every info of the buffer and the buffer itself nothing seems to change during the process what could be the reason ?

sys.modules```
This is a dictionary that maps module names to modules which have already been loaded. This can be manipulated to force reloading of modules and other tricks. However, replacing the dictionary will not necessarily work as expected and deleting essential items from the dictionary may cause Python to fail. If you want to iterate over this global dictionary always use `sys.modules.copy()` or `tuple(sys.modules)` to avoid exceptions as its size may change during iteration as a side effect of code or activity in other threads.

Hello!
I am muted because I just joined. Happy to be here!
@somber heath I have.
I haven't met them. By just I literally mean like 5 minutes ago! haha
I am python newbie. Working through Learn Python the Hard Way. From Zed. Hoping to get into app dev and/or cyber security.
!resources
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
I am also doing the helsinki mooc
Learn the basics of programming with the Python programming language. The focus of the course is on programming, and you will learn how to write programs and understand how they work. For example, the basics of algorithms, control structures, subprograms, object-oriented programming are covered. The course is suitable to anyone who wants to lear...
massive online open course
just a free course nothing special. though I do particularly like their structure and instruction
very clear, very approachable.
Happy new year! I am in china so it's been new year for a loooooong tim
time*
I usually do weekly shopping list. Yearly is pretty fantastic
Do you use the Mari Condo method?
"Hug it close and say, does this bring me joy?"
or the redneck method?
"If this had poo on it would I toss it?"
no decoration is also an aesthetic. But dark oak sounds nice.
The resources page is too tempting. I need to finish the two tutorials I am in the middle of before getting on to anything else
that "automate the boring stuff" looks like the next thing on the list
yeah.
Thanks!!!
I will absolutely be asking when I get stuck.
Currently just doing tutorials and nothing there is too hard to need much outside resources.
I've also got Chatgpt with an instance of "explain this to me like I am 5 and you are forbidden to give me code"
I do find I need things over explained.
Yeah, Chinese lol
no other coding languages
But I am a linux admin background
just next did any programming alongside of that, my role was mostly helpdesk
I have noticed that a lot of the tutorials explain a ton of the stack and I have a good working knowledge of that stuff. But I do struggle with the concepts the languages do
currently on while and if elif else loops and a little bit of recursion and conceptually I get it
but when I have to write my own stuff it feels extremely daunting.
this was an example that I was trying to solve and got super stuck on
def get_day():
days_of_the_week = {"monday", "tuesday", "wednesday", "thursday", "friday", "saturday", "sunday"}
user_input = str.lower(input("Today is: ")) # Renamed variable to 'user_input'
if user_input in days_of_the_week:
return user_input # Base case: valid input
else:
print("Not a day. Noice try tho! Please try again, this time with days.")
return get_day()
So get_day grabs the day
the return get_day() sends it back if you don't enter a day
user_input =input("Today is: ")str.lower()
like that?
haha I get confused on how to use while loops.
so avoid them
you mentioned that there's a limit to the recusion
recursion
This was HEAVILY helped with ChatGPT
chat didn't give me the code explicitely but fixed what I did poorly
But I was trying to avoid
get_day = input("put your day")
is day == monday
etc....
yeah I am going to be trying to avoid chat helping me solve things from here on
I was pretty disappointed with it.
!e py text = 'HElLo, wOrLd.' print(text.lower()) print(text.upper()) print(text.title())
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | hello, world.
002 | HELLO, WORLD.
003 | Hello, World.
felt like it did the work which made the solution much less fulfilling.
AH! ok so using it as a method, just calling the variable and using . method() to call it
Seen that, not used it much
by "just started" I mean I am about 2 weeks into the learning process.
yeah, you'll be getting ahead of my tutorial if you use a for loop
we're at while loops, just finished introducing if/elif/else and on while loops
!e py value = 0 while value != 5: value += 1 print(value) print('Bye.')
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | 1
002 | 2
003 | 3
004 | 4
005 | 5
006 | Bye.
I took a break to try to find more coders to talk to because I'm working from home and ran out of "it's nice to be alone" time lol
how would you put a list into the loop?
while value != 5:
value += 1
this starts value at 0
because python starts counting at 0?
always?
!e py for i in range(5): print(i)
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | 0
002 | 1
003 | 2
004 | 3
005 | 4
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | a
002 | b
003 | c
letter = 'a'
print(letter)
letter = 'b'
print(letter)
letter = 'c'
print(letter)```
ah! So for would be a much better solution for going through a list
days_list = ["monday", "tuesday", "wednesday", "thursday", "friday", "saturday", "sunday"]
for day in days_list:
print(day)
this might have syntax errors
!e py fruits = 'apples', 'oranges', 'bananas' for fruit in fruits: print(fruit)
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | apples
002 | oranges
003 | bananas
Need to be on the server for 3 days to get ungated to talk lol erg
that's fine. I type at a whooping 43 words per minute
!e py a, b, c = [1, 2, 3] print(a) print(b) print(c)
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | 1
002 | 2
003 | 3
a, b, c = 1, 2, 3```
!e py my_list = 'a1', 'b2', 'c3' for letter, number in my_list: print(f'{letter=} {number=}')
:white_check_mark: Your 3.12 eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | letter='a' number='1'
002 | letter='b' number='2'
003 | letter='c' number='3'
days_list = ["monday", "tuesday", "wednesday", "thursday", "friday", "saturday", "sunday"]
for day in days_list:
user_input = input("please write a day to get the next day! ")
#this is the part that I am confused. How would I evaluate how to get the #input evaluated for == day of the week in that index?
Haha I think the back and forth feels like I walked into a pub in the UK. Which I miss. I spent some time in london. Loved it.
I can't place accents that well. From the states but I live in China. Switching careers from teaching English here to coding. Perhaps teaching but would prefer to do app dev

I am from "the south", we have a pretty heavy twang and now my accent is very "globalized"
days_list = {"monday", "tuesday", "wednesday", "thursday", "friday", "saturday", "sunday"}
As a dictionary?
ah point, I have seen them in the tutorial but I didn't realize the distinction.

How to you evaluate input() in the for loop though?
I will be responsive to help questions later.
This is religiously offensive and makes me hungry.
lol
yeah take your time 🙂 thanks for what you were discussing earlier was incredibly helpful!
Why doesn't Brett explain it if Brett gets it?
you said: "Right?" Lol I am two weeks into the tutorial. I don't know anything about right/wrong lol
well broadly speaking that is also true
