#

That being said...

#

Time that was, back a few years, we did not have the voice gate.

#

What happened was that every fifteen minutes or so, you'd get people coming in, scream, shout racial slurs, play loud music, blow into their microphone, etc etc and be all-around dickheads.

#

This had a particularly rattling effect on my nerves.

#

Because the voice gate requires people to socially invest in the server and demonstrate patience, the voice gate proved to be a very effective counter to these people, who are not interested in doing that.

#

The voice gate is a bad thing. It presents itself as a barrier to legitimate participation for newcomers.

#

It is a bad thing that eliminates a worse thing.

#

Therefore, on balance, it is better to have it than to not.

#

There are other means of achieving a similar effect, turning on phone number verification, etc, but these are invasive and ultimately unnecessary and would likely provoke a similar reaction as the voice gate as it stands.

#

It's a speed bump, not a brick wall.

#

I have sympathy for your position.

primal shadow
#

I disagree, the voice gate is great. I love it.

#

It's easy enough to get through, and does its job amazingly. Never seen a server of this scale (or close) manage trolls / spam so well.

#

No one forced us into this server, no one forced us into voice, it's all a courtesy from the team and a privilege for the users.

Bryan Johnson (born August 22, 1977) is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, writer and author. #

the science is very interesting for sure

#

yeah agreed @mild quartz

#

it does seem to come from an egocentric place imo. but the science is objective, so it still benefits everyone

mild quartz
#

this is controversial maybe

#

but we should celebrate when self-centered thinking produces good things

#

doing good should not have to be self sacrifice

#

if we build a system where people act in self interested ways

#

and as a side effect it benefits everyone else

#

that is a great thing

#

because you can rely on people to be self centered

#

cant rely on people to be altruistic

hasty orbit
#

oh no i do agree with that. good in all forms should still be championed. i was just mentioning the egocentrism since it was spoken about in the vc

i don't think everything that's achieved from egocentrism has to be a negative thing

Whether thieves came up with it or not, this usage is referencing the fact that geese have long necks and like to poke their heads just about everywhere (literally, watch out if youโ€™re around a gaggle of people friendly geese, particularly if youโ€™re wearing a dress or just if youโ€™re a guy and want to keep your sensitive bits unpoked).

Around the 17th century, โ€œganderโ€ also was used as a verb to mean โ€œto wander foolishly/aimlesslyโ€.

Many people often misuse the word โ€œgaggleโ€ thinking it refers to a group of geese in general. In fact, it technically just means a group of geese on the ground. When they are in the air, they are called a โ€œskeinโ€, when flying in a V, or a โ€œplumpโ€, when flying in a close-knit group.

Geese have been around on the Earth for approximately 10 million years.
